KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Alice Nekesa did not know she was infected with malaria-causing parasites until it was too late. She was in the fourth month of pregnancy last year when she started bleeding, a miscarriage later attributed to untreated malaria in her. The Ugandan farmer said recently that she regretted the loss of what would have been her second child “because I didn’t discover malaria and treat it early.” Variations of such cases are commonly reported by Ugandan health workers who witness stillbirths or feverish babies that die within days from undiagnosed malaria. The deaths are part of a wider death toll tied to the mosquito-borne disease, the deadliest across Africa, but one easily treated in adults who seek timely medical care. Until recently, a major gap in malaria treatment was how to care for newborns and infants infected with malaria who weren’t strong enough to receive regular medication. That changed last month when Swiss medical regulators approved medicine from the Basel-based pharmaceutical company Novartis for babies weighing between 2 and 5 kilograms (nearly 4½ to 11 pounds). Swissmedic said the treatment, a sweet-tasting tablet that disperses into a syrup when dropped into water, was approved in coordination with the World Health Organization under a fast-track authorization process to help developing countries access much-needed treatment. Africa’s 1.5 billion people accounted for 95% of an estimated 597,000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2023, according to the WHO. More than three-quarters of those deaths were among children. In Uganda, an east African country of 45 million people, there were 12.6 million malaria cases and nearly 16,000 deaths in 2023. Many were children younger than 5 and pregnant women, according to WHO. Nigeria, Congo and Uganda — in that order — are the African countries most burdened by malaria, a parasitic disease transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes that thrive and breed in stagnant water. The drug approved by Swiss authorities, known as Coartem Baby in some countries and Riamet Baby in others, is a combination of two antimalarials. It is a lower dose version of a tablet previously approved for other age groups, including for older children. Before Coartem Baby, antimalarial drugs designed for older children were administered to small infants with careful adjustments to avoid overdose or toxicity. Ugandan authorities, who have been working to update clinical guidelines for treating malaria, say the new drug will be rolled out as soon as possible. It is not yet available in public hospitals. The development of Coartem Baby has given hope to many, with local health workers and others saying the medicine will save the lives of many infants. Ronald Serufusa, the top malaria official for the district of Wakiso, which shares a border with the Ugandan capital of Kampala, said he believes Coartem Baby will be available “very, very soon” and that one priority is sensitizing the people adhering to treatment. Some private pharmacies already have access to Coartem Baby, “flavored with orange or mango” to make it palatable for infants, he said. During the so-called malaria season, which coincides with rainy periods twice a year, long lines of sick patients grow outside government-run health centers across Uganda. Many are often women with babies strapped to their backs. Health workers now are trained to understand that “malaria can be implicated among newborns,” even when other dangerous conditions like sepsis are present, Serufusa said. “If they don’t expand their investigations to also suspect malaria, then it goes unnoticed,” he said, speaking of health workers treating babies. The Malaria Consortium, a global nonprofit based in London, in a statement described the approval of Coartem Baby as “a major leap forward for saving the lives of young children in countries affected by malaria.” In addition to Uganda, the drug will be rolled out in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Tanzania, the group said. Jane Nabakooza, a pediatrician with Uganda's malaria control program, said she expects the government will make Coartem Baby available to patients free of charge, even after losing funding when the U.S. shrank its foreign aid program earlier this year. Some malaria funding from outside sources, including the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis, remains available for programs such as indoor spraying to kill mosquitoes that spread the malaria-causing parasite. Because of funding shortages, “we are focusing on those that are actually prone to severe forms of malaria and malaria deaths, and these are children under 5 years,” she said. ___ The Associated Press receives financial support for global health and development coverage in Africa from the Gates Foundation. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Tuesday the opening of a migrant detention facility in Nebraska as President Trump’s administration ramps up the expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) detention capabilities. The new facility, located in the southwest part of the state, was dubbed “Cornhusker Clink” and will house “criminal illegal aliens” arrested by ICE, DHS said in a press release. The detention center came as a result of a partnership between the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and ICE, expanding the capacity by up to 280 beds. The officials are using the existing minimum security prison work camp in McCook, located around 210 miles west of Lincoln. “Today, we’re announcing a new partnership with the state of Nebraska to expand detention bed space by 280 beds,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. “Thanks to Governor Pillen for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Nebraska’s Cornhusker Clink. Avoid arrest and self-deport now using the CBP Home App.” The administration has continued adding detention buildings nationwide to help hold migrants whom agencies have arrested. DHS opened “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Florida Everglades last month and an East Montana detention facility in El Paso, Texas, this week. DHS will also hold up to 1,000 migrants in a “Speedway Slammer” detention facility in Indiana. Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced Tuesday that the Nebraska National Guard will provide “administrative and logistical” support to ICE officials based in Nebraska to help enforce immigration laws. About 20 Army National Guard soldiers will be a part of the mission, with training beginning next week, according to DHS. “I am also proud that the Nebraska State Patrol and National Guard will be assisting ICE enforcement efforts, as well,” Pillen said in a statement. “Homeland security starts at home, and, just as when I twice deployed troops to secure our southern border during the failed Biden administration, Nebraska will continue to do its part.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Adam Steen, former Iowa director of Administrative Services, was joined by his sons, Maverick and Ryker and his wife Kasey Steen, as announced he was running for governor Aug. 19, 2025 at Berean Church in Pleasant Hill. (Photo by Robin Opsahl/Iowa Capital Dispatch) Republican Adam Steen, former director of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services, announced his campaign for governor Tuesday, labeling himself as a “faith guy” in the race to succeed Gov. Kim Reynolds. Steen held a campaign kickoff event Tuesday at Berean Church in Pleasant Hill, starting with a musical performance from Nathan Thomas and the A17 worship band and an introduction from Pastor Gary Pilcher. As he introduced himself, Steen said there had been some speculation online about what type of candidate he would be. “Let me tell you, from my own lips, who I am: I am the faith guy,” Steen said. “I’m a Jesus guy. I’m a Make America Great Again guy. I’m a common-sense policy, America first, people first guy.” In addition to being a credentialed minister, Steen said some of his highest profile commitments to faith were as DAS director. The department had canceled a Satanic Temple of Iowa holiday celebration event at the Iowa Capitol in December 2024, with Steen saying the event was denied because it included “elements that are harmful to minors.” Steen said at the campaign event he was “the guy that stood in front of the Satanists when they blatantly targeted our children, and I’m the guy getting sued by the Satanists for protecting our children.” He also said there was another event request at the Capitol he denied, for an all-ages, family-friendly drag show. He said this planned event was not as well known, but that he believed it was the right thing to do despite being at risk of getting sued. Steen, appointed in 2021 to serve as DAS director in Reynolds’ administration, said he led some of the major policies changing state government, like the government agency restructuring signed into law in 2023. Speaking with reporters, Steen said he had discussed running for the seat with Reynolds and came to a “mutual agreement” that he would resign from his position if he ran for the office. “Today, at 10 a.m., I walked into the governor’s office and I submitted my resignation,” Steen told the crowd. “Today I walked away from a job that I loved. I walked away from a job that I loved, so I could join the fight and defend the state that I love.” Before leading DAS, Steen was the director of business development at Syverson Strege, a financial services firm, and had previously owned a management consulting firm called 25 Connections. He also was a minor league baseball relief pitcher in 2002, playing for the Philadelphia Phillies and Batavia Muckdogs. Steen highlighted his commitment to protecting private property rights, but did not go into detail on his views about the use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipeline projects — the subject of a contentious bill that was vetoed by Reynolds this session. “I was working with her at this time, and I support everything that Governor Reynolds is doing,” Steen said. When asked about his views on the use of eminent domain in these projects, he said “I’m a pro-property rights, pro-private ownership person.” Steen is the latest Republican to join the field of GOP candidates seeking to take the mantle from Reynolds after she announced she would not run for reelection in 2026. U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra and state Sen. Mike Bousselot, R-Ankeny, currently have “exploratory” committees for governor, while Rep. Eddie Andrews, R-Johnston, and former state legislator Brad Sherman have announced campaigns. Iowa Auditor Rob Sand is considered the current frontrunner to become the Democratic gubernatorial candidate. Former political operative Julie Stauch and Democrat Paul Dahl are also running to become the party nominee. View the full article

The Southwest is in for peak dog days as a looming heat wave has triggered extreme heat warnings and advisories for 80 million people from the U.S.-Mexico border to southwest Utah. Federal forecasters said a swirling system of warm, descending air over the crosshairs that divides Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico will toast the region through the weekend. “An anomalously strong ridge of high pressure centered over the Four Corners states will lead to a significant heat wave,” the National Weather Service said in a national forecast discussion Tuesday. Extreme heat warnings, which predict certain danger, begin Wednesday morning in Southern California for parts of Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange counties, as well as Palm Springs. The warnings also begin Wednesday for Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. They are scheduled to remain in effect through the weekend. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the city was expecting “potentially some of the hottest temperatures of the summer.” Cooling centers are opening in the city, while Gov. Gavin Newsom is moving firefighting resources to the region. In agricultural El Centro, California, where temperatures remained in the triple digits after nightfall, a child left unattended in a hot vehicle Monday later died at a hospital, police said. Temperatures in the 90s are expected as far north as the Seattle region Saturday, according to the service, and Portland, Oregon, has a fire weather watch in effect for Thursday. On Friday, Phoenix is expected to reach a high temperature of 112 degrees, Las Vegas is expected to reach 110, and Death Valley National Park’s Furnace Creek Visitor’s Center is forecast to report 120 degrees, according to the weather service. Maricopa County, Arizona, officials on Tuesday reported 44 deaths last week for which heat was a cause or contributor. This article was originally published on NBCNews.com View the full article

A member of Irish rap band Kneecap was due to appear in court on Wednesday charged with a terror offence for allegedly supporting Hezbollah. Liam O'Hanna, 27, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was charged in May after being accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag during a London concert in November. The hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London is expected to hear legal arguments on whether the charge falls outside a six-month time limit, a court official confirmed. Since Hezbollah was banned in the UK in 2019, it has been an offence to show support for the Iran-backed Lebanese force. Kneecap has grabbed headlines for statements denouncing the war in Gaza and against Israel. The hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London comes amid a growing controversy surrounding support for banned organisations. More than 700 people have been arrested, mostly at demonstrations, since the Palestine Action group was also outlawed in early July under the Terrorism Act 2000. The government ban on Palestine Action came into force days after it took responsibility for a break-in at an air force base in southern England that caused an estimated £7.0 million ($9.3 million) of damage to two aircraft. The group said its activists were responding to Britain's indirect military support for Israel during the war in Gaza. Supporting a proscribed group is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. - Provocative - Hundreds of fans cheered outside the central London court in June when O'Hanna, Liam Og O hAnnaidh in Gaelic, made his first appearance in June. Prosecutor Michael Bisgrove told the previous hearing the case was "not about Mr O'Hanna's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel". "He is well within his rights to voice his opinions and his solidarity," Bisgrove said. Instead, the prosecutor said, the case was about O'Hanna wearing and displaying "the flag of Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist organisation, while allegedly saying 'Up Hamas, up Hezbollah'". The raucous punk-rap group has said the video that led to the charge was taken out of context. Daring provocateurs to their fans, dangerous extremists to their detractors, the group's members rap in the Irish language as well as English. Formed in 2017, the group is no stranger to controversy. Their lyrics are filled with references to drugs, they have repeatedly clashed with the UK's previous Conservative government and have vocally opposed British rule in Northern Ireland. Last year, the group was catapulted to international fame by a semi-fictional film based on them that scooped multiple awards including at the Sundance festival. har/jkb/gv/lb View the full article

Only one quarterback battle remains. The Cleveland Browns named Joe Flacco their starter on Monday. The Indianapolis Colts announced Daniel Jones as theirs on Tuesday. That leaves the New Orleans Saints, who are still deciding between second-year pro Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough. Saints head coach Kellen Moore addressed the competition on Tuesday. He sounds no closer to making a decision than he was at the start of training camp. “It’s close,” Moore told reporters Tuesday. “We look at every aspect of this quarterback situation. It’s really, really close. Numbers, experience reps, everything. It’s going all the way back to the start of training camp. Everything is very, very close between this group.” [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Moore's not only fielding question about the Saints quarterback from media. He says he gets them at home from his kids as well. Moore gives his kids the same answers he gives to reporters. "There's a lot of people who like to ask about the quarterbacks, my kids included," Moore said. "It's a fun conversation. "They've got advice about everything. Every bad decision, every throw, every play call. They've got it all." Who will win the job?So who's got the edge? That remains a mystery with one preseason game remaining on the schedule. Rattler's more of a known commodity. The 2024 fifth-round pick started six games as a rookie last year, completing 57% of his passes for 188.1 yards per game with four touchdowns and five interceptions — not exactly inspiring starting quarterback stuff. The Saints selected Shough in the second round of April's draft as the third quarterback off the board amid the then-uncertain future of quarterback Derek Carr. Both are now competing for the starting job following Carr's unexpected retirement due to a lingering shoulder injury. Neither has done enough to win the job while splitting starts in New Orleans' first two preseason games. How they'e lookedRattler's completed 25 of 35 passes (71.4%) for 251 yards (7.2 yards per attempt) with one touchdown and one interception. Shough's completed 24 of 34 passes (70.6%) for 231 yards (6.8 yards per attempt), also with one touchdown and one interception. Each performed better as the backup quarterback while facing defensive competition deeper on the opponents' depth charts. As for who will start in Saturday's preseason finale against the Denver Broncos? Moore wasn't even ready to announce a starter for that game. "We've got three days of practice and a game, so we've got some excellent work coming our way," Moore said. As for when he'll make a decision? Moore answered, jokingly, that it will "hopefully" come before New Orleans' Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinaos. View the full article

Mi esposa me hace reír mucho. Mis hijos me hacen reír mucho. ¡Mi mamá!, es muy chistosa. Si no fueras actor, serías... The death toll in New York City's Legionnaires’ disease outbreak has risen to five with more 100 cases confirmed across five ZIP codes in Central Harlem, local health officials announced. Since the outbreak began on July 25, the New York City Health Department has reported 108 cases of Legionnaires' disease in Central Harlem — a historically Black neighborhood in Upper Manhattan. The latest death was reported on Aug. 18 after health officials concluded that a person with the disease who died before mid-August was associated with the Central Harlem cluster. "Based on epidemiological evidence, remediation efforts have been effective as new cases continue to decrease," Dr. Michelle Morse, acting commissioner of the city health department, said in a statement on X. "The Health Department is continuing our investigation." As of Aug. 19, the city health department said 14 people with the disease were currently hospitalized as officials continued investigating the community cluster of the disease in ZIP codes: 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039. The city health department reiterated that the risk to most residents in these ZIP codes remains low but urged those who work or live in the area to immediately see a health care provider if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. Legionnaires' disease is a severe pneumonia caused by a type of bacteria called Legionella, which grows in warm or hot water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms, which can develop up to 14 days after exposure, include cough, fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. NYC Legionnaires' disease outbreak: An obscure disease keeps spreading through air conditioning Where does the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak stem from? The outbreak in Central Harlem has been linked to cooling towers in the area, according to the city health department. Cooling towers are heat exchangers that use fans and water to cool down buildings. In an update on Aug. 19, the city health department said it has sampled and tested water from all cooling towers in the five ZIP codes. On Aug. 14, health officials confirmed that 12 cooling towers in the area had positive results for the Legionella bacteria. Remediation of the towers have since been completed. Health officials have noted that the outbreak is not related to buildings' hot or cold water supply, and that the plumbing system was separate from the cooling tower system. People should continue to use air conditioning, including window units, and other appliances that use water, the city health department said. "Any cooling towers with initial positive results for Legionella bacteria have completed the treatment required by the Health Department," according to to the the city health department. "We are continuing to monitor and let buildings know if additional treatment is needed." USA TODAY previously reported that the Central Harlem cluster is already the largest outbreak of the disease in the city in a decade. Typically, clusters have been concentrated in lower-income and non-White communities. The city saw its largest recent outbreak in 2015, when 138 cases and 16 deaths were linked to a single cooling tower in the South Bronx. In 2022, the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx had a cluster of 30 people diagnosed with the disease, according to a city health department report. What is Legionnaires' disease? The disease takes its name from a 1976 outbreak at a state convention of the American Legion veterans organization in a Philadelphia hotel. More than 180 people contracted the disease, and 29 died. Though it is considered a rare disease, the American Lung Association says Legionnaires' disease is a growing health concern. It has steadily become more common nationwide in recent decades, according to the CDC, and research has shown that hotter, more humid temperatures have contributed to the increase of cases. Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia caused by consuming water or breathing in water vapor contaminated with Legionella bacteria, according to the CDC. The disease can be caused by plumbing systems where conditions are favorable for bacteria growth, such as cooling towers, whirlpool spas, hot tubs, humidifiers, hot water tanks, and evaporative condensers of large air-conditioning systems. Legionnaires’ disease cannot be spread from person to person and can be treated with antibiotics, the CDC says. Most healthy people who get infected usually get better, but about one in 10 people who get the disease die due to complications from it. The best way to prevent Legionnaires' disease is by cleaning pipes and devices that use water, according to the CDC. And health officials have urged people at higher risk — including those ages 50 and older, cigarette smokers, and people with chronic lung disease or compromised immune systems — to immediately seek medical care if they have symptoms. "Legionnaires’ disease can be effectively treated if diagnosed early, but New Yorkers at higher risk, like adults aged 50 and older and those who smoke or have chronic lung conditions, should be especially mindful of their symptoms and seek care as soon as symptoms begin," Morse said in a statement on Aug. 4. The Brief Ted Cruz spoke to reporters about the war in Ukraine, artificial intelligence, and job programs Cruz believes artificial intelligence will be key in spurring economic growth, especially in Central Texas He also believes ending the fighting between Ukraine and Russia could provide an opportunity for Texas AUSTIN, Texas - U.S. Senator Ted Cruz spoke at a Round Rock Chamber of Commerce event on Tuesday. Afterward, the Senator spoke to reporters about the war in Ukraine, artificial intelligence, and job programs. Cruz speaks on AIA large group packed into the Kalahari Resorts convention center on Tuesday for what was promoted as a power lunch talk with Texas Senator Ted Cruz. The big focus of the conversation on stage was about the economy. Later, Senator Cruz said he was optimistic the passage of the congressional budget bill would spur job creation. "And we’re getting it through appealing job-killing regulations that is benefiting Texas," said Senator Cruz. Sen. Cruz also believes artificial intelligence will be key in spurring economic growth, especially in Central Texas. But he’s concerned that the United States has lost ground in developing AI in countries like China. "AI will change the jobs we’re doing, but it is coming regardless, and the question is who do we want to lead? Who do we want to innovate? Do we want it to be America? Do we want it to be American companies creating high-paying jobs here in America, or do we want it to be the Chinese communist? One way or the other, AI is coming, and I would much rather it be American companies that are innovating and designing AI and creating new opportunities and technology. Yes, there’s a risk of displacement, but there’s also the opportunity for creating new jobs," said Senator Cruz. Cruz speaks on Russia-Ukraine WarFOX 7 Austin also spoke with the Senator about the possible resolution to the war in Ukraine. Ending the fighting could provide an opportunity for Texas, according to Sen. Cruz. "I think it is very important that Ukraine and Europe continue to buy their energy from the United States of America and, frankly, from Texas. I think it would be a real mistake if Ukraine and Europe went back to buying oil and gas from Russia and funding the military buildup that led to this military conflict, and in terms of resolving this matter, I think that is a very important part of the resolution," said Senator Cruz. The Senator was asked if the peace negotiations could result in the creation of a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), similar to what is currently separating North and South Korea. "I don’t know that it ends up being a situation where you have machine guns pointing at each other. I think you will see a resolution that draws a boundary and that ensures peace. And I know that’s something that the president is working hard on, he is focused on, and I think it is in everybody’s interest. The details of it are still being negotiated. The first step is getting the parties to the table," said Senator Cruz. Big picture view As for the upcoming midterm elections, Senator Cruz does not plan on making an endorsement in the contentious GOP primary fight between John Cornyn and Ken Paxton. Recent polls show that the race is now tightening up. The Source Information from interviews conducted by FOX 7 Austin's Rudy Koski View the full article

The Brief Austin ISD students went back to school on August 19 Some Texas laws will soon take effect and impact operations A new cellphone ban, school buses with seatbelts, and the Ten Commandments being posted in classrooms are some of the changes AUSTIN, Texas - Tuesday, August 19, was the first day of the new school year for Austin ISD students. Some new laws will also soon take effect and impact operations. New changes in Texas public schoolsSchool buses with seatbeltsNearly 73,000 students within Austin ISD headed back for the new school. For the first time, the district is utilizing air-conditioned buses with seatbelts. "Which is a big, big deal, especially here in Austin when it's going to be 100 degrees the entire first couple weeks of school," AISD Superintendent Matias Segura said. Cellphone banIn just a couple of weeks, new laws will take effect impacting Texas public schools. A major change is a ban on student cellphone use during the school day. "When you go into schools, and you have students engaging with one another, having conversations with each other at lunchtime, in the hallways, it's important," Segura said. "We’ve got too many devices in the classrooms; we’ve got to get them out." Some are worried about being able to communicate during emergencies. "I want to be able to be in touch with my mom throughout the day. I don't like not being able to text her. If anything were to happen, I wouldn't be able to because it's locked up," Ninth grader Isabella Cortez said. Other changesOther changes include new regulations on curriculum and classroom displays. Schools are prohibited from sponsoring, authorizing, or promoting clubs or instruction based on gender identity or sexual orientation. Another requirement is that the Ten Commandments must be displayed in classrooms if the signs are privately donated. Sixteen parents of different religious backgrounds have already sued the state, arguing that displaying them infringes on the First Amendment and the separation of church and state. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting effort is receiving pushback from Republicans in the state assembly who are accusing the Democrats of keeping them in the dark and of "disenfranchising Californians." GOP Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo, vice chair of the California State Assembly Committee on Elections, slammed Democrats for giving her "barely 24 hours" to examine the redistricting bill before a Tuesday hearing – while Democrats, she claimed, had advance notice. Macedo vowed to defeat the redistricting push, saying, "We are in the super-minority, but we are effective, and we will defeat this." She added that by the time she received the bill’s language as vice chair of the elections committee, several Democratic co-authors signed on. That, she argued, meant Democrats had a first look, while she had "barely 24 hours before committee tomorrow to prepare." California Republicans Sue To Stop Newsom, Democrats From Pushing Redistricting Plan Macedo warned that witnesses appearing at Tuesday's hearing could face legal consequences if they refused to answer her questions. Read On The Fox News App "Let me warn anybody who will be testifying tomorrow. If you don't answer my questions tomorrow, attorneys will be making sure you answer them in a courtroom," she said, adding, "You can run, but you cannot hide." Despite Democrats dominating California politics, Macedo pledged, "We are not backing down from this fight." "You are disenfranchising Californians, and we are tired of democracy dying here," she said. "We will fight back." She added that if Republicans are not able to stop the redistricting plans in the assembly, then their victory will be "in a courtroom or it will be at the ballot box." Newsom-backed High-speed Rail 'Boondoggle' Hit With New House Investigation Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher speaks in opposition to Democrats' plan to advance a partisan effort to redraw the California congressional map at a press conference on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, in Sacramento, California.Four GOP state lawmakers have filed a lawsuit in California's Supreme Court to stop the Democrat-controlled legislature from holding a vote by the end of this week to advance the redistricting push. Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez, one of the four Republicans behind the suit, told Fox News Digital that she joined the lawsuit because "Californians have already spoken clearly at the ballot box." "In 2008, voters approved Proposition 11 to take redistricting power away from politicians and give it to an independent citizens’ commission," she said. "Two years later, with Proposition 20, voters doubled down and expanded that power to include congressional districts, passing it by a decisive 61% to 39%. Governor Newsom’s plan is a direct attempt to undo that mandate and put politicians back in control. I’m standing up because this isn’t about partisan advantage; it’s about respecting the will of the voters who demanded fairness and transparency." Newsom announced he would advance a redistricting map in California to counter the Texas redistricting bill being pushed by President Donald Trump. On Friday, California Democrats and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) released a new district map that would likely eliminate five GOP congressional seats, theoretically nullifying the five additional seats Republicans would gain if Texas’ redistricting push is successful. Here Are The 5 Gop House Seats That Could Be Wiped Out With Newsom's California Redistricting Plan California Gov. Gavin Newsom gives a speech on redistricting. The California legislature introduced a constitutional amendment on Monday to be brought to a referendum vote in November. If passed by California voters, the amendment would allow the legislature to temporarily suspend its nonpartisan districting commission and move forward with its redistricting plans as laid out by the DCCC. Newsom’s office declined Fox News Digital’s request for comment, with a spokesperson saying he would "point you to the Legislature given this is about the legislative process." Fox News Digital also reached out to the office of Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, a Democrat, but did not receive a response by the time of publication. An illegal immigrant accused of exporting shipments of firearms, ammunition and other military items that were concealed inside shipping containers to North Korea was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison. Shenghua Wen, 42, of the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, had been in federal custody since December 2024 before pleading guilty in June to one count of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government. Wen, a Chinese citizen, entered the United States in 2012 on a student visa and remained in the U.S. illegally after the visa expired in December 2013, the Justice Department said. Before entering the U.S., Wen met with North Korean government officials at that country's embassy in China, where they asked him to procure goods on behalf of the communist state. Chinese Student Arrested For Allegedly Smuggling Undeclared Biological Materials Seen In New Mugshot Shenghua Wen purchased guns and other items that he illegally shipped to North Korea from California, federal prosecutors said."Wen and some co-conspirators successfully shipped firearms and ammunition to North Korea by concealing the items inside shipping containers that were shipped from Long Beach, California, through Hong Kong, China, to North Korea," federal prosecutors said. On Aug. 14, authorities seized two devices — a chemical threat identification device and a hand-held broadband receiver that detects eavesdropping devices — at Wen's home that he intended to send to North Korea, the Justice Department said. On Sept. 6, law enforcement seized approximately 50,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition that Wen allegedly obtained to send to North Korea. Read On The Fox News App Martin Estrada, U.S. Attorney in Los AngelesMessages retrieved from Wen’s cellphones revealed discussions with co-conspirators about shipping military-grade equipment to North Korea. Some of these messages included photographs that Wen sent of items controlled for export under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in a December news release. Chinese Phd Student From Wuhan Arrested Smuggling Biological Materials After Deleting Electronic Evidence: Doj Federal prosecutors said agents seized devices from Wen's home. From January to April 2024, Wen sent emails and text messages to a U.S.-based broker about obtaining a civilian plane engine. There also were several text messages on Wen’s iPhone about price negotiations for the plane and its engine. North Korean officials wired Wen $2 million to get the firearms and other items. He told investigators that he believed the North Korean government wanted the weapons and ammunition for a potential attack on South Korea. With the money, Wen was able to pay for an armory and a federal firearm license for $150,000 and listed his partner's name as the business owner to register with the Texas secretary of state. In an effort to fly under the radar and avoid detection by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), he had others buy guns for him, authorities said. A North Korean flag flutters next to concertina wire at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia."Once the straw purchasers gave Wen the firearms, he transported them to California, packed the firearms into a shipping container, and shipped the container to China, knowing that it would be transferred to North Korea," court documents state. As summer heats up and tourists flock to the California coast, beachgoers should be on the lookout for sea lions sickened by a recent outbreak of leptospirosis — a kidney disease that can result in severe symptoms in both humans and animals. The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito has reported a significant outbreak of leptospirosis in California sea lions since early July, affecting animals primarily in Central and Northern California, according to the center's public relations director, Giancarlo Rulli. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that causes kidney failure in marine mammals — notably, California sea lions, Rulli said. The Marine Mammal Center has responded to more than 200 sea lions that have shown symptoms, with 150 of those since the beginning of July. Humans can get leptospirosis, contracting the illness through water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals. Symptoms in humans may include fever, headache, muscle aches, jaundice, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rash. The disease is typically treated with antibiotics. The disease can be fatal in dogs, and because it's transmitted through contaminated water, it's especially concerning at the beach, according to Rulli. Experts have advised pet owners to keep their dogs leashed when they're near the shoreline and not to approach any marine mammal. Pet owners should also contact their local veterinary clinic to see if there's a leptospirosis vaccine available for their dogs. The disease can spread among species, but in California sea lions, it is primarily transmitted through bodily fluids, particularly urine. About two-thirds of the California sea lions that the center responds to will die in transport or during care, or have to be euthanized after an admission exam. Read more: 'Longest, most toxic, and deadliest' algae bloom may finally be at an end "Leptospirosis is an extremely virulent disease," Rulli said. "There is a high mortality rate in California sea lions. By the time a sea lion washes ashore, they are experiencing mass inflammation. They may already have active kidney failure, so there is a major uphill challenge in terms of veterinary care to give these animals a second chance and release them back out to the wild." Historically, outbreaks of this disease have occurred every three to five years, but since 2018, they have become more frequent. From late 2012 until 2017, there was a "warm weather blob" that extended from the waters off the west coast of Mexico all the way to the Gulf of Alaska. During that time, leptospirosis nearly disappeared among the sea lion population, Rulli said. It then kicked back up in 2018, when the Marine Mammal Center responded to more than 300 cases of sickened sea lions. Since then, outbreaks have been occurring more consistently. Signs of leptospirosis in sea lions include tightly tucked front flippers, severe lethargy and the animals drinking water. Although sea lions and most other marine mammals normally get all of their hydration from the fish or food they consume, a sickened sea lion has extreme thirst due to inflammation within the body, so it is a cause for concern when the animals are seen drinking water. Once the sea lions are brought in for treatment, they receive a full exam and a series of diagnostic tests on blood, urine and other samples, according to Rulli. Ultrasound allows experts to look at the kidneys to determine the severity of the disease. The animals are treated with a mix of antibiotics, gastroprotectants to address stomach ulcers, and bagged fluids to help stabilize the kidneys. It can take a few weeks to a few months for the animal to recover. Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Lightning did not cause the historic Doerner Fir Tree Fire, officials say. Bureau of Land Management investigators said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but they have ruled out the possibility of lightning based on the weather in an update shared on Aug. 19. The Doerner Fir tree fire, pictured Aug. 19 by the Bureau of Land Management. An infrared drone flight showed that one area of heat is located about 280 feet up the tree’s trunk, where a fire is burning a cavity into the tree. The Doerner Fir tree fire, pictured Aug. 19 by the Bureau of Land ManagementAs KOIN 6 News previously reported, firefighters have been trying to extinguish the fire since it was first detected on Aug. 16. A helicopter has been dropping buckets of water to try to control the blaze. Firefighters have been unable to get close to the tree’s base due to concern over falling debris.
