View the full article

View the full article

The White House launched an official TikTok account on Tuesday, as Donald Trump continues to permit the Chinese-owned platform to operate in the US despite a law requiring its sale. “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” read a caption on the account’s first post, a 27-second clip, on the popular video-sharing app. The account had about 4,500 followers an hour after posting the video. Trump’s personal account on TikTok meanwhile has 110.1 million followers, though his last post was on 5 November 2024 – election day. Trump has a soft spot for the popular app, crediting it with helping him gain support among young voters when he defeated Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, in the November 2024 presidential election. Related: Leading US economists urge peers to fight Trump’s attack on environment “The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said as the account went live. A federal law requiring TikTok’s sale or a ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump’s inauguration on 20 January. But the Republican president, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. TikTok is a tremendously popular social media app with 170 million users in the US. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, said in April that it had been in discussion with the US government regarding a solution for the app. It added that any agreement “will be subject to approval under Chinese law”. In mid-June, Trump for the third time extended the deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. That extension is due to expire in mid-September. The idea of banning TikTok originated with Trump in 2020, who said the Chinese-owned app posed a danger to national security. It quickly became a bipartisan issue and Congress overwhelmingly voted to ban the app last year, which faced a legal challenge but was ultimately affirmed by the supreme court. The original deadline for the TikTok ban was 19 January. Trump switched his stance on TikTok after joining the app while campaigning for president last year, amassing nearly 15 million followers and hosting the TikTok CEO, Shou Zi Chew, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Chew also attended Trump’s inauguration. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform – which boasts almost 2 billion global users – after coming to believe it helped him win young voters’ support in the November election. Trump’s official account on X, formerly Twitter, has 108.5 million followers – though his favored social media outlet is Truth Social, which he owns, where he has 10.6 million followers. The official White House accounts on X and Instagram have 2.4 million and 9.3 million followers, respectively. Dara Kerr contributed reporting View the full article

Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, said Tuesday in a memo posted on X that the Trump administration is revoking the security clearances of 37 current and former national security officials. She accused them of having engaged in the "politicization or weaponization of intelligence" to advance personal or partisan goals, failing to safeguard classified information, failing to "adhere to professional analytic tradecraft standards" and other "detrimental" conduct that she did not describe in the memo. The memo offered no evidence to support the accusations. Many of the officials who were targeted left the government years ago after serving in both senior national security positions and lower-profile roles out of the public eye. Sam Vinograd, who was assistant secretary for counterterrorism, threat prevention and law enforcement policy in the Department of Homeland Security, is among the 37 former officials. She is also a national security contributor for CBS News. She has not yet responded to Gabbard's memo. Some of the officials worked on matters that have long infuriated President Trump, like the intelligence community assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election on his behalf. And several showed their concerns about Mr. Trump by signing a critical letter in 2019 that was highlighted on social media last month by right-wing provocateur and close Trump ally Laura Loomer. The action reflects Mr. Trump's ongoing distrust of career intelligence officials whom he perceives as working against his interests. The revocation of clearances is a tactic the administration has used before — it has revoked the clearances of former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and several others. Critics say the tactic risks chilling dissenting voices from an intelligence community accustomed to drawing on a range of viewpoints before formulating an assessment. In Mr. Trump's first term, he revoked former CIA Director John Brennan's clearance. "These are unlawful and unconstitutional decisions that deviate from well-settled, decades-old laws and policies that sought to protect against just this type of action," Mark Zaid, a national security lawyer whose own clearance has been revoked by the Trump administration, said in a statement. He called it hypocritical for the administration to "claim these individuals politicized or weaponized intelligence." Gabbard on Tuesday sought to defend the move, which she said had been directed by Mr. Trump. "Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right," she wrote on X. "Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold." In recent weeks, Gabbard and other Trump administration officials have revisited the intelligence community assessment published in 2017 on Russian election interference, including by declassifying a series of years-old documents meant to cast doubt on the legitimacy of its findings. Multiple government investigations have reached the same conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election in sweeping fashion, including through a hack-and-leak operation of Democratic emails and a social media campaign aimed at sowing discord and swaying public opinion. But Mr. Trump has long resisted the assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin interfered in his favor, and his Justice Department has authorized a grand jury investigation that could bring fresh scrutiny to Obama-era officials. Security clearances are important not only for current government workers but also former employees whose private-sector jobs require them to retain access to sensitive information. Stripping clearances from such employees could make it hard for them to do their jobs, though it's unclear how many of the former officials still have or require one. On his first day of office, Mr. Trump said he would revoke the security clearances of the more than four dozen former intelligence officials who signed a 2020 letter saying that the Hunter Biden laptop saga bore the hallmarks of a "Russian information operation." Mr. Trump has attempted to revoke the security clearances for lawyers at a number of prominent law firms but was rebuffed by federal judges. Some of those who were targeted in the latest action were part of Biden's national security team. Many only learned of the Gabbard action from news reports Tuesday, two former government officials who were on the list told the Associated Press. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity as they consider whether to take legal action. The Brief The families of two victims in the Bryan Kohberger case are suing Moscow, Idaho, to stop the release of crime scene photos. A judge granted a temporary restraining order, halting the release of images from the victims' bedrooms. The city of Moscow released nearly 200 photos last week, prompting legal action from the families. MOSCOW, Idaho - The families of two of Bryan Kohberger’s victims are suing the city of Moscow, Idaho, for releasing photos of the gruesome crime scene. The backstory Kohberger pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison last month for the murders of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, Zana Kernodle, and Kaylee Goncalves. Bryan Kohberger (left) and Idaho murder victims Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Kaylee Goncalves (right).FOX 13 reporter Shirah Matsuzawa spoke with attorney Leander James, who represents the families of Mogen and Chapin. James said the lawsuit was filed on behalf of the two families. He filed an injunction asking a judge to order the city of Moscow to stop releasing photos and body camera footage from Mogen’s bedroom, where she and Goncalves were murdered. He also filed a temporary restraining order, an emergency filing that allows a judge to immediately pause the release of certain materials. In this case, the judge granted the order, agreeing with the families that the release of the images would be an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. That means the photos will not be released until a hearing on the injunction takes place. This legal action comes after the city of Moscow released nearly 200 photos from the King Road home last week. James told FOX 13 Seattle that the families received no advance notice from the city about the release of those images. While such notice isn’t required, it is typically provided. What they're saying "When the door was shut behind Mr. Kohberger and he went to prison for the rest of his life, my – you know – Karen Scott, felt like they could take a deep breath and start to move on with their lives. And it was a positive, positive day," said attorney Leander James. "And unfortunately, this prospect of the death scene images of their child being thrown out there to the world has visited them with a great deal of work, and has sent them back again." James said he reached out to the city before filing the lawsuit, but they couldn’t reach an agreement. "Images are powerful, powerful emotional triggers, and I’m just one attorney," he said. "I can only do as much as I can do. I’m trying to stop what I can. I kind of feel like, honestly, I feel like I am standing in front of a flood coming at me with a Dixie cup." The injunction hearing was originally scheduled for Thursday, but James said he received a request from the city on Tuesday afternoon to postpone it. "For those who are criticizing us for stopping the release of further images, I’d ask them to search their hearts, to look at what’s the right thing to do and what the legal thing is to do," James said. Dig deeper A full press release from the City of Moscow regarding the temporary restraining order can be found below: "On August 12, 2025, the City of Moscow was served notice of a petition to the Latah County District Court for a temporary restraining order and injunction to prevent the release of additional public records related to State of Idaho v. Bryan Kohberger, Latah County Case CR29-22-2805, Ada County Case CR01-24-31665, and MPD Case No. 22-M09903, on behalf of Karen Laramie, the mother of Madison Mogen. This action followed the recent release of redacted crime scene photos by the City of Moscow in response to a legal public records request. "On August 15, 2025, Idaho Second District Judge Marshall issued a Temporary Restraining Order prohibiting the City’s release of any images, audio, or video depicting the inside of Madison Mogen’s bedroom until a hearing on the preliminary injunction may be held. Judge Marshall found that major portions of what had been released did not constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy. However, Judge Marshall stated that there are portions of videos and photographs in their redacted form, specifically including unreleased bodycam video, that could constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy at this time. While the Temporary Restraining Order only applied to Madison Mogen’s bedroom, the City will not provide any further releases of photographs or videos depicting the inside of any of the victims' bedrooms until the matter is fully reviewed and decided by the Court." The BBC was forced to issue another correction on Monday after reporting that a Gazan woman had died from malnutrition, when in fact she was suffering from leukemia. On Sunday, the BBC ran a story headlined "Malnourished Gazan woman flown to Italy dies in hospital." BBC journalist Rachel Muller-Heyndyk reported that the woman "was evacuated to Italy for treatment while severely emaciated," and highlighted, "The UN has warned of widespread malnutrition in Gaza" that has largely been blamed on Israel. "The University Hospital of Pisa said that she suffered a cardiac arrest and died on Friday, less than 48 hours after arriving," the initial report said. "The hospital said she had suffered severe loss of weight and muscle, while Italian news agencies reported she was suffering from severe malnutrition." However, the headline was later changed to "Gazan woman flown to Italy dies in hospital" and added that further reporting from both the hospital and Israeli aid officials found a "very complex clinical picture," including that the woman had suffered from leukemia. The BBC published a clarification at the very bottom of the article. Bbc Marred By Recent String Of Retractions And Apologies Related To Israel-hamas War Coverage The BBC clarified that the woman in its story had a more "complex" medical picture."This article's headline originally said that Marah Abu Zuhri died of malnutrition, with the introduction stating that she suffered a cardiac arrest and died on Friday," the correction read. "The headline has been amended to remove the reference to malnutrition being the cause of death in what the hospital described as a ‘very complex clinical picture.’" Read On The Fox News App In a comment to Fox News Digital, a BBC spokesperson said that it was not aware of the woman’s leukemia before publishing and corrected the headline and subsequent tweet on the story after learning more details. "We were not initially aware that Marah Abu Zuhri was being treated for leukemia," the statement read. "In line with usual editorial practice, we added this to the story after the Israeli authorities put the information into the public domain, in what the hospital has described as ‘a very complex clinical picture.' We have amended the original headline and tweet and added an explanatory note." The BBC has had a long history of issuing corrections and apologies regarding its reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, with errors that tend to favor or sympathize with the terrorist organization. The BBC was one of several news organizations that rushed to report false claims made by the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry that Israel had bombed the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, resulting in 500 civilian casualties, shortly after the October 7 terrorist attack. In November 2023, the BBC apologized after misquoting a Reuters report and distorting a quote by an IDF spokesman claiming the IDF was "targeting people including medical teams as well as Arab speakers" in Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital. The IDF spokesman had actually said that Arab-speaking soldiers were on the ground to ensure aid made its way to the hospital. The BBC apologized for reporting unproven claims about Israel carrying out "summary executions" of Gaza civilians in January 2024. In February, the BBC apologized after its anchor Nicky Schiller referred to Israeli hostages as "prisoners" on air. Bbc News Issues On-air Apology For False Claim Israel Targeting Staff And 'Arab Speakers' At Gaza Hospital The BBC has repeatedly apologized and issued retractions for coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. Also in February, the BBC pulled the documentary "Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone" from its streaming platform after unintentionally profiling a Hamas member’s 13-year-old son in the film. The BBC issued an apology for being unaware of the connection at the time and added a new note to the film to offer more context. An internal BBC report in July found that the broadcaster breached editorial guidelines for the film after it was learned that three members of the production company Hoyo Films, which produced the film, knew that the boy’s father was a Hamas official. The probe reprimanded the BBC for not being "sufficiently proactive" with its due diligence ahead of broadcast and admonished it for a "lack of critical oversight of unanswered or partially answered questions" regarding the documentary. Last month, The New York Times also had to issue a note that an emaciated child displayed on the front page as evidence of famine in Gaza was not "born healthy" as reported, but was actually suffering from a preexisting condition unrelated to the conflict with Israel. The BBC has issued several corrections or apologies regarding its reporting on the Israel-Gaza war or antisemitism. NEED TO KNOWDamon Wolfe of Frisco, Texas, was arrested on Aug. 7 on three felony counts of aggravated assault after he fired shots into a vehicle The three individuals in the vehicle were identified as teenagers attempting to perform a "ding-dong-ditch" prank Wolfe, 58, could face 20 years in prison if convicted A Texas man who fired shots at teenagers attempting a "ding-dong-ditch" prank at his house in July now faces three felony charges. The incident took place on the evening of July 28 on Scottsdale Way, the Frisco Police Department said in a statement on Monday, Aug. 18. At around 10:50 p.m., Frisco police were dispatched to the location in response to a report from a person who said he fired shots at someone who attempted to kick down his door, police said. During their investigation, police learned the suspect, Damon Wolfe, 58, left his home after hearing a loud bang on his door. He fired multiple rounds at a passing car because he thought the occupants were involved, police said. Later that evening, FPD responded to a call that a vehicle had been shot at. Police said the driver and two passengers first claimed that they were shot at while on a different street. After more interviews, the group admitted they were doing a "ding-dong-ditch" prank in a random neighborhood when a male with a firearm fired shots at their car, police said. Officers saw what looked like three bullet holes in the car. The Frisco Police Department arrested Wolfe on Aug. 7 on three counts of aggravated assault, one count for each person in the vehicle. The charges carry a potential sentence between two and 20 years in prison, and a $10,000 fine, police said. "What started out as a prank, ding dong ditching a house, turned into something that could of potentially had deadly consequences," Frisco Police Chief David Shilson told CBS News Texas. "We found the vehicle later in the evening, shortly after the incident, the kids did not want to report it because certainly they were out doing these pranks, and I don't think they realize the gravity of everything that had occurred." For homeowners, it is important to understand that there are legal and criminal consequences for running outside and shooting at a vehicle fleeing the scene," Shilson said in a statement. "The bullets fired in this offense could have easily struck neighbors' houses and had deadly consequences," Shilson continued. He went on to call the incident "completely senseless and avoidable." When the FBI fired five veteran agents earlier this month, Director Kash Patel offered no explanation. Shock at the firings has continued to reverberate through the storied agency. And now, details are emerging about the possible motivation, several sources close to the agents tell CBS News. "There is a despicable purge underway of senior FBI officials, all of whom have risen in their careers as nonpartisan, and who have been targeted for vindictive, political purposes," said Mark Zaid, a whistleblower attorney who represents a number of federal workers dismissed under President Trump. Without any public comment from FBI or Justice Department officials, the agents, including, Brian Driscoll, who served for a short time as acting director at the start of the Trump administration, and Steven Jensen, head of the powerful Washington field office, were summarily fired and given little explanation for their removal. None had reached retirement age, meaning the abrupt dismissals will deprive them of their full pensions. One agent's expulsion came a month after his wife died of cancer. CBS News spoke with multiple sources close to the agents for this story. All of those interviewed spoke on the condition they not be identified for fear of retribution. By outward appearances, former acting FBI director was in good standing Some of the agents may have been targeted solely because they worked on one or more of the criminal investigations of Mr. Trump, while others who were ousted in an earlier spate of firings worked on the Biden administration's Jan. 6 investigations, sources close to the agents said. But the most senior agent, Driscoll, by outward appearances, was in good standing with Patel. Driscoll, a highly decorated agent who took part in numerous daring counterterrorism operations, began his short stint as acting director with what many agents viewed as a singular act of bravery, resisting calls from a top Trump appointee at the Justice Department to turn over the names of FBI employees who had participated in the Jan. 6 investigation. Nevertheless, Patel kept Driscoll on after his Senate confirmation, putting him in a high-profile post as head of the bureau's Critical Incident Response Group, which oversees the FBI's elite Hostage Rescue Team and its aviation unit. Jensen, a veteran agent who helped oversee the Jan. 6 investigation from his position as chief of the FBI's domestic terrorism section, was given a significant promotion by Patel to be the assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office, one of the largest outposts in the country. One source with knowledge of the matter told CBS News that Patel relied on both agents and particularly admired Driscoll, whom he viewed as a swashbuckling tactical operator. Another said that the FBI director opposed some of the firings. "I think Kash tried to save these people, honestly," the source said. Yet there are also some indications that both men may have crossed FBI leadership over loyalty and personnel matters. Some agents suspect political interference Zaid is part of a team of lawyers preparing to sue the federal government on behalf of some of the fired FBI agents. He told CBS News he suspects outside political interference. "If you look at Patel's testimony from his confirmation hearing when he promised the committee there would be no politicization or retribution at the FBI under his leadership," Zaid told CBS News, "you have to conclude that he was either lying or, giving him the benefit of the doubt, that he was directed to take these actions, and that could only come from the White House or the Justice Department." Patel promised senators during that hearing, "There will be no retributive actions taken by any FBI, should I be confirmed as FBI director." Democrats on Capitol Hill see the firings as baldly political and damaging to U.S. national security. Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement to CBS News that he believes agents should be commended for their ability to enforce the law impartially. "When we start purging agents for doing their jobs, instead of toeing a partisan line, we weaken our defense against everything from violent crime to foreign threats, and that makes us all less safe," Warner said. When asked who ordered the termination of the agents, the FBI declined to comment. A White House official deferred to the FBI to discuss bureau personnel matters. "The suspendables" There are other factors that have led some sources close to the agents and lawyers representing them to question whether the abrupt removals were the result of outside political interference, possibly by the White House. One question surrounds the role of a small band of right-leaning former agents who clashed with FBI leadership under directors James Comey and Christopher Wray and have been vocal critics of a bureau they believe was "weaponized" against them. Among them is Kyle Seraphin, one of several former FBI agents and whistleblowers who were suspended or had their security clearances revoked for alleged misconduct during the Biden administration. The former agents, including Seraphin, have referred to themselves as "the suspendables." They have been targeting FBI officials they believe to be politically motivated. Seraphin has been among the most outspoken – and effective – members of the group. He has at times been critical of Patel for not aggressively and swiftly cleaning house at the bureau, but he has also had Patel's ear. Sources say he exercises considerable influence from his social media perch on X and his podcast, "The Kyle Seraphin Show." Seraphin has publicly claimed some of the credit for last week's purge. On August 4, he posted a thread on X under the heading "VETTING CRISIS CONTINUES," in which he identified one of the fired agents, Christopher M. Meyer. Meyer had been serving as one of the pilots of the governmental planes used by Patel until he was notified of his termination. Seraphin had publicly speculated, correctly it turned out, that Meyer had previously been on a squad based in the Washington Field Office that investigated Mr. Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents and conducted a search of Mr. Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. The Justice Department brought criminal charges against Mr. Trump over the discovery of documents, but a judge eventually dismissed the case. Seraphin told CBS News in an interview, "I identified that the person that ran the Mar-a-Lago case that resulted in a search warrant at the president's home was rubbing shoulders in close proximity with the FBI director" as his pilot. He was concerned that "this is a person that's now in the kind of buddy space of your FBI director, and he doesn't even know who he's speaking to." On Alex Jones's "InfoWars" he said he gave a "heads up" to an "administration insider" about Meyer. He told CBS News his "Trump administration insider" was "in the president's orbit." How the firings unfolded On that same day, Patel directed Driscoll to fire Meyer, sources told CBS News. When Driscoll asked on what grounds, he did not get what he considered a satisfactory answer from Patel, according to the source. Without itr, Driscoll refused. Two days later, on Aug. 6, Driscoll was contacted by J. William Rivers, the No. 3 official at the FBI, and told he was being terminated, the source said. He was given no reason why but later received a letter formally notifying him that he was being fired. Around the same time, Jensen was also relieved of his duties. A source with knowledge of that matter said it was because he, too, refused to fire a subordinate agent in the Washington Field Office, though CBS News was not able to identify the person. Walter Giardina, a WFO agent who was also dismissed in the purge, had worked on a number of cases involving Mr. Trump and other members of his administration, including the prosecution of senior Trump aide Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress. The fifth agent fired earlier this month was Spencer Evans, who had been the special agent in charge of the FBI's Nevada field office until earlier this summer, when he was abruptly told he was being transferred to Huntsville, Alabama. By then, Trump supporters, including Seraphin, had been publicly critical of him over his enforcement of FBI COVID policies during the tenure of former FBI Director Christpher Wray. In April, Seraphin posted this on X: "After @Kash_Patel was nominated, he asked me about people in the FBI who were problems. I said Spencer Evans, the SAC of Las Vegas, was the man who PERSONALLY denied the religious accommodations for Covid 19 shots and testing protocols." Seraphin's post continued: "Kash said 'Gone.'" Seraphin attached a video to his post that showed that months after that conversation, Evans was still leading the Las Vegas FBI office, and Patel was praising its work in tracking down criminals. Then, last Wednesday, two hours before getting into his car to drive across the country for his new assignment, Evans received a call notifying him that he too was being terminated. He was given no reason. Two days later Evans received a formal termination letter signed by Patel. It said Evans "demonstrated a lack of reasonableness and overzealousness in the implementation of COVID-19 protocols and policies." After the August firings, Seraphin told CBS News a colleague in the FBI said to him, "You have four scalps hanging off your belt this week." Seraphin excluded Driscoll from the count, and referred to him as "collateral damage," and said he probably didn't deserve to be fired. A diplomatic row between Israel and Paris has broken out after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused French President Emmanuel Macron of fuelling “the anti-Semitic fire” in France by planning to recognise Palestinian statehood. Netanyahu’s accusation against the French leader was contained in a letter, seen by the AFP news agency on Tuesday, which claimed that anti-Semitism had “surged” in France since President Macron’s recent announcement that he will recognise Palestine as a state at a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly next month. The French president’s office hit back swiftly at Netanyahu on Tuesday, calling his allegations “abject” and “erroneous”, and promising that they “will not go unanswered”. “This is a time for seriousness and responsibility, not for conflation and manipulation,” the French presidency said, adding that France “protects and will always protect its Jewish citizens”. “Violence against the [French] Jewish community is intolerable,” it said. Reacting to Netanyahu’s letter, Benjamin Haddad, the French deputy minister for European affairs, said that France had “no lessons to learn in the fight against anti-Semitism”. The issue, “which is poisoning our European societies”, must not be “exploited”, Haddad said. France, which is home to Europe’s biggest Jewish community, has joined an estimated 145 of the 193 UN members that now recognise or plan to recognise a Palestinian state, according to reports. ‘Encourages the Jew-hatred now stalking your streets’In his letter, Netanyahu said to Macron: “Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on this antisemitic fire. It is not diplomacy, it is appeasement. It rewards Hamas terror, hardens Hamas’s refusal to free the hostages, emboldens those who menace French Jews and encourages the Jew-hatred now stalking your streets.” Netanyahu’s diplomatic dust-up with Macron comes as the Israeli leader accused Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of being “a weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia’s Jews”. The Albanese government plans to recognise Palestinian statehood and on Monday cancelled the visa of Israeli politician Simcha Rothman, whose ultranationalist party is in Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Rothman had been scheduled to speak at events organised by the Australian Jewish Association. Hours later, Israel’s foreign minister, Gideon Saar, said he had revoked the visas of Australia’s representatives to the Palestinian Authority. “I also instructed the Israeli Embassy in Canberra to carefully examine any official Australian visa application for entry to Israel,” Saar said. “This follows Australia’s decisions to recognise a ‘Palestinian state’ and against the backdrop of Australia’s unjustified refusal to grant visas to a number of Israeli figures,” he said. Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong called Israel’s revocation of visas for its diplomats an “unjustified reaction”, and said that Netanyahu’s government was increasing Israel’s diplomatic isolation on the world stage. “At a time when dialogue and diplomacy are needed more than ever, the Netanyahu government is isolating Israel and undermining international efforts towards peace and a two-state solution,” Wong said in a statement. Last week, Albanese said that Netanyahu was “in denial” about the humanitarian crisis being caused by Israel’s punishing war on Gaza. On Tuesday, Jens Laerke, the spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said that Israeli authorities had banned shelter items, such as tents, from entering Gaza for about five months, a period in which more than 700,000 people in the war-ravaged territory have been forcibly displaced and re-displaced by Israeli forces. Laerke said Israel has classified tents as “dual use” because it considers that tent poles could be used for a military purpose. UN Human Rights Office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan warned that Israel’s military takeover of Gaza City threatened a further humanitarian catastrophe. “There are risks of mass displacement and more and more killings and more misery,” he said, adding that “hundreds of thousands” of Palestinians in Gaza City were being ordered to move south to the al-Mawasi area, which Israel previously designated a “safe zone” but continues to bomb. Tropical wood demand from some of America's top RV brands is fuelling deforestation on the Indonesian island of Borneo, home to Asia's last great rainforest, according to a new investigation by environmental NGOs. The recreational vehicle industry is now the biggest consumer of tropical wood in the United States, UK-based NGO Earthsight and Indonesian NGO Auriga Nusantara said in a report published late Tuesday. They said evidence showed sheets of tropical "lauan" plywood found in Indonesia were likely being used in the floors, walls and ceilings of RVs produced by major brands like Jayco, Winnebago and Forest River. "Nature-loving RV owners will be horrified to learn that their hobby risks destroying rainforests," said Earthsight director Sam Lawson in a press release. "America's RV giants need to get out of the 1980s and implement the kinds of minimum sustainability standards other US corporates have had in place for decades." Indonesia has one of the world's highest rates of deforestation linked to mining, farming and logging, and is accused of allowing firms to operate in Borneo with little oversight. Borneo island has one of the world's largest tracts of rainforest and hosts orangutans, long-nosed monkeys, clouded leopards, pig-tailed macaques, flying fox-bats and the smallest rhinos on the planet. Large tracts of orangutan habitat in Borneo were found to be "cleared to make way for a plantation of fast-growing timber", the NGOs said. An Indonesian plywood company, PT Kayu Lapis Asli Murni, sourced timber mostly from rainforest in areas the NGOs visited, half of which was then exported to US firms MJB Wood and Tumac Lumber in 2024, they said. MJB Wood is the main lauan plywood supplier to Jayco, while Tumac Lumber supplies companies such as RV parts maker Patrick Industries, "whose customers include Thor Industries, Forest River and Winnebago", the report said. The NGOs said it meant it was "almost certain" Indonesian tropical wood was being used in the RV supply chain in the United States. None of the companies mentioned replied to the report's authors when asked for comment, it said. Neither the companies nor the Indonesian environment ministry immediately responded to an AFP request for comment. jfx/cwl View the full article
