CAIRO (AP) — When Ahlam Saeed awoke last month to the sound of gunfire and roaring vehicle motors, the 43-year-old widow rushed outside her home in war-torn Sudan to find a line of at least two dozen vehicles, many of them motorcycles carrying armed fighters. “They were firing at everything and in every direction,” the mother of four said. “In an instant, all of us in the village were fleeing for safety." Many people were gunned down in their houses or while trying to flee. At least 200 people were killed, including many women and children, in the community of straw homes, according to a rights group tracking Sudan’s civil war. Saeed and her children — ages 9 to 15 — were among those who survived after rebel fighters rampaged through Shag al-Num, the small farming village of several thousand people in Sudan’s Kordofan region. In interviews with The Associated Press, Saeed and four other villagers described the July 12 attack, one of the deadliest assaults since the war began more than two years ago over a power struggle between commanders of the military and the rival paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF. The villagers' accounts add to the devastating toll of the conflict, which started in April 2023 and has wrecked the country in northeastern African. The fighting has killed more than 40,000 people, displaced as many as 14 million, caused disease outbreaks and pushed many places to the brink of famine. Atrocities, including mass killings of civilians and mass rape, have also been reported, particularly in Darfur, triggering an investigation by the International Criminal Court into potential war crimes and crimes against humanity. ‘Hell’s door was opened’ The villagers from Shag al-Num said RSF fighters and their allied Janjaweed militias stormed into the community, looting houses and robbing residents, especially of women’s gold. Some victims were held at gunpoint. Some young villagers attempted to fight back by taking up rifles to defend their homes. The RSF fighters knocked them down and continued their rampage, witnesses said. “It was as if the hell’s door was opened,” Saeed said, sobbing. Her straw house and neighboring homes were burned down, and one RSF fighter seized her necklace. “We were dying of fear,” she said. The villagers said the fighters also sexually abused or raped many women. One of the women said she saw three fighters wearing RSF uniforms dragging a young woman into an abandoned house. She said she later met the woman, who said she was raped. Satellite imagery from July 13 and 14 showed “intentional arson attacks” and “a large smoke point” over the village as well as “razed and smoldering” buildings, the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health reported. In the two-day RSF attack in Shaq al-Noum and surrounding areas, more than 450 civilians, including 35 children and two pregnant women, were killed, according to UNICEF. After the assault, many of the survivors fled, leaving behind a mostly deserted village. The RSF did not respond to questions about the attack from the AP. Both sides seek control of oil-rich Kordofan region Beyond the village, the oil-rich Kordofan region has emerged as a major front line following the military’s recapture of Khartoum earlier this year. The warring parties have raced for control of the three-province region stretching across southern and central Sudan because it controls vital supply lines. “Kordofan has become the most strategic area of the country,” said Cameron Hudson, an Africa expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The fighting has exacerbated the already dire conditions in the region. In Kadugli, the provincial capital city of South Kordofan province, “roads have been cut off, supply lines have collapsed and residents are walking miles just to search for salt or matches,” said Kadry Furany, country director for Sudan at Mercy Corps aid group. A mental health therapist in Obeid, the provincial capital of North Kordofan province, said the city received waves of displaced people in recent weeks, all from areas recently ambushed by the RSF. The therapist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of concerns about her safety, said she supported 10 women and girls who endured sexual abuse, including rape, in RSF-seized areas in July alone. Among the victims were two women from Shag al-Num village, she said. “The conditions are tragic,” she said. Another epicenter of starvation and disease To the west of the Kordofan region is el-Fasher, the military’s last stronghold in the five-province Darfur region. The city — which has been under constant RSF bombardment for over a year — is one of the hardest hit by hunger and disease outbreaks, according to the U.N. The World Food Program has been unable to deliver aid by land. It warned this month that 300,000 people, who are “trapped, hungry and running out of time,” are at risk of starvation. “Everyone in el-Fasher is facing a daily struggle to survive,” said Eric Perdison, the food program's director for eastern and southern Africa. “Without immediate and sustained access, lives will be lost.” The paramilitaries and their Janjaweed allies imposed a total blockade of el-Fasher, leaving no route out of the city that the RSF does not control, according to satellite imagery recently analyzed by the humanitarian lab at Yale. The blockade caused food prices to spike up to 460% higher than in the rest of Sudan, according to the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies. Most staples are scarce or no longer available. Civilians who want to leave the city are required to pass through a single RSF-controlled point, where they have been robbed, forced to pay bribes or killed, according to the Yale lab, aid workers and residents. On Aug. 2, a group of people, including women and children, attempted to flee the city. When they reached Garni, a village on a crucial supply route just northwest of the city, RSF fighters ambushed the area, residents said. “They tell you to leave, then they kill you,” said al-Amin Ammar, a 63-year-old who said he escaped because he is old. “It’s a death trap.” At least 14 people were killed, and dozens of others were wounded in the village, said the Emergency Lawyers rights group said. Aside from fighting, the region has been ravaged by lack of food and a cholera outbreak, said Adam Regal, a spokesman for a local aid group known as General Coordination. Many people have nothing to eat and resorted to cattle fodder to survive, he said. Some have not found even fodder, he said. He shared images of emaciated children with their exhausted, malnourished mothers on the outskirts of el-Fasher or the nearby town of Tawila. “People don’t await food or medicine,” he said, “rather they await death.” The 12-year-old son of Sabah Hego, a widow, was admitted with cholera to a makeshift hospital in Tweila, joining dozens of other patients there. “He is sick, and dying,” Hego said of her youngest child. “He is not alone. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday brushed off accusations from his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu that the Australian leader is a “weak politician who had betrayed Israel” by recognizing a Palestinian state. Netanyahu's extraordinary public rebuke came after an Aug. 11 announcement by Albanese that his government’s recognition of a Palestinian state will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The announcement was followed by tit-for-tat cancellations of Australian and Israeli visas. “History will remember Albanese for what he is: A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia’s Jews,” Yetanyahu posted on social media Tuesday. Albanese responded pointedly Wednesday: “I treat leaders of other countries with respect. I engage with them in a diplomatic way.” “I don’t take these things personally,” Albanese said. “Increasingly there is global concern and global concern because people want to see an end to the cycle of violence that we have seen for far too long. ウラン採掘に携わった少年時代を振り返る吉田秀忠さん。右腕の痛みは今も続く＝福島県平田村で2025年6月13日午後2時31分、岩間理紀撮影 写真一覧 　「この腕の痛みと一緒に過ごしてきた人生ですわ」 　福島県平田村の吉田秀忠さん（95）はそうつぶやくと、湿布だらけの右腕を静かになでた。 　旧制私立石川中（現学法石川高）3年だった大戦末期、学徒勤労動員で同県石川町の鉱山で働かされた際に負ったけがの後遺症だ。80年が過ぎた今でもうずき、湿布を貼らなければ眠れない日もあるという。 陸軍の極秘研究 　吉田少年が動員されたのは、陸軍のある極秘研究に関する作業だった。 　世界唯一の戦争被爆国の日本だが、大戦中、自らも原爆開発に着手していた。陸軍と海軍がそれぞれ開発に乗り出し、陸軍の研究は、委託した理化学研究所の仁科芳雄博士（1890～1951年）の頭文字を取って「ニ号研究」と呼ばれる。 Advertisement 福島県石川町でウラン採掘に従事した少年たちの写真（石川町立歴史民俗資料館所蔵）。吉田秀忠さんの自宅居間に掲げられている＝福島県平田村で2025年6月13日午後2時51分、岩間理紀撮影 写真一覧 　原爆の開発には、原料となるウランが必要だ。石川町は戦前からさまざまな鉱物の産地として知られ、今でもペグマタイト（花こう岩の一種）が山肌に露出している。ペグマタイトには微量だが天然ウランが含まれ、陸軍はこれに目をつけた。 　45年4月から、吉田さんを含む石川中の生徒たちがペグマタイト採掘に動員された。 　「石川山で同級生と2人1組になり、朝から夕方まで、砕いた石をモッコ（網状の運搬用具）で運んだ。大きな石が出てくると、監督役から『転がして動かすぞ』と言われたけど、まだ子どもなもんだからなかなか動かせなくて」 　体ができあがっていない少年たちには過酷な重労働だった。 肩は赤くなり、皮がむけ… 　町教育委員会がまとめた「平和の誓い」（96年）や石川中の卒業生による「風雪の青春」（93年）に掲載された当時の手記には、「（鉱石の運搬で）肩は赤くなり、皮がむけて痛かった。次第にたこができて痛さを感じなくなってきた」「暑いのでズボンをまくり裸になり、素足で猿のように岩盤の上を飛び歩いていた」「タガネ棒で何日も穴掘りをし手に豆を作った」などと記されている。危険な坑内での掘削にも従事し、時折現れる敵機への恐怖もあった。 　そんなある日、じゃまな石を「てこの原理」でどかそうと、仲間の一人が地面と石との間に棒を差し込もうとしたところ、棒が外れて石を支えていた吉田さんの右腕を強打した。鋭い痛みに悲鳴をあげ、近くの湧き水で冷やしたが、痛みは引かなかった。十分な治療を受けることもできず、勤労動員はその後も続いた。 　当時、自分たちが掘っているものの正体や目的は知らされていなかった。ただ、現場で「ここで掘り出したものが原料になって、マッチ箱一つの大きさで大爆発を引き起こせる。日本が勝つために必要だから頑張ってくれな」と聞いたことを覚えている。 　結局、国産原爆は未完成のまま、終戦の日を迎えた。8月15日、自宅で農作業をしていたら、近所の人が敗戦を知らせにきた。「最初、意味が分からなかった」と、ポカンとしていたという。 かつてウランが採掘された山肌を案内する橋本悦雄さん＝福島県石川町で2025年6月17日午後2時31分、岩間理紀撮影 写真一覧 　戦後になって、あの石が原爆の材料だったと聞いた。「（原爆が）できなくてよかった。技術力も足りず、そもそも無理だったのでしょう」 　吉田さんはその後、家計を支えるために石川中を中退した。農業に従事し、家族を持って2人の娘を育てたが、腕の痛みは残り続けた。「右腕をかばってたら左腕も痛くなってきてしまって。もう我慢、我慢」 　痛みが激しい日にはきちんと寝付くことも難しく、夜に戦争の夢を見た。夢の中で吉田さんは、激戦地となったガダルカナル島で亡くなった日本兵の遺骨を集めていた。戦地に行った経験はない。「なんでこんな夢を見るのだろう」。目が覚めて、胸に残る情景やもやもやをノートに書き留めた。 　自宅の居間には、採掘現場の掘り返された斜面でかつての仲間と自身が並んで写る白黒写真が飾られている。「最初から無理で、やっちゃいけない戦争だった。痛みはずっと取れませんわ」。その写真を見ながら、吉田さんは静かに言った。 かつてのウラン採掘地を訪れると… 　6月末、原爆開発計画と石川町の関わりを長年調査してきた町文化財保護審議会副会長、橋本悦雄さん（76）に案内してもらい、記者はかつてのウラン採掘地を訪れた。 　夏草の茂った雑木林に足を踏み入れると、不自然にくぼんだ斜面が現れる。持参したハンマーで橋本さんが近くの岩を叩くと、ペグマタイトの白っぽい鉱脈が露わになった。 　橋本さんによると、同町のウラン採掘に携わった人々の中で存命なのは、東北地方では吉田さんだけとみられるという。橋本さんは「当時の状況を証言できる人も少なくなっているが、かつてこの町で何が行われてきたのか、事実を伝えていかなければならない」と強調した。【岩間理紀】 View the full article

By Ariba Shahid ISLAMABAD (Reuters) -Evicted from their homes and huddling under plastic sheets after heavy rains, Afghan refugees in a park near government offices in Islamabad said they had nowhere to go as Pakistan pressures landlords to expel documented families. Among them is Samia, 26, from Afghanistan’s Hazara minority, a Shi’ite community long persecuted at home, who gave birth just three weeks ago. "I came here when my baby was seven days old, and now it has been 22 days … we have no food, and my baby was sick but there was no doctor," she said, wearing damp clothes and shoes caked in mud as she cuddled her son, Daniyal whose body bore a rash. The United Nations says Pakistan has begun deporting documented Afghans before a Sept. 1 deadline that could force more than a million to leave. The action comes despite about 1.3 million holding refugee registration documents, while 750,000 have Afghan identity cards issued in Pakistan. Samia now lives on the park's wet ground, among 200 families who cook, sleep and dry their belongings there after nights of rain. Plastic sheets serve as makeshift shelters, and children and parents spend their days battling mud, sun and hunger. Families pool the little money they have to buy potatoes or squash, cooking small portions over open fires to share with several people. The women use the washroom in a nearby mosque. Sahera Babur, 23, another member of the Hazara community, who is nine months pregnant, spoke with tears in her eyes. "If my baby is born in this situation, what will happen to me and my child?" she said, adding that police had told her landlord to evict her family because they were Afghan. Dozens of policemen stood at the edge of the park in Pakistan's capital when Reuters visited, watching the camp. Refugees said officers regularly told them to leave or risk being taken away. Police denied harassment. Jawad Tariq, a deputy inspector general, said refugees were only asked to leave voluntarily or move to holding centres. Pakistan’s information ministry did not respond to a text message requesting comment. Refugees say they have been left in limbo for years. "UNHCR gave us promises … but they have not visited us," said Dewa Hotak, 22, an Afghan and former television journalist. The agency's spokesperson in Pakistan, Qaiser Khan Afridi, called the situation "precarious", adding that Afghans unable to regularise their stay faced arrest, deportation and homelessness. He said the agency was pressing Islamabad to create a registration mechanism and reiterated its call not to return people to a country where their lives may be in danger. Many at the camp say they cannot go back to Afghanistan because of the risks. Ahmad Zia Faiz, a former adviser in Afghanistan’s interior ministry, said he feared reprisals for serving in the previous government, adding, "If we return to Afghanistan, there is a risk of being killed." Pakistan, host to millions of Afghans since the 1979 Soviet invasion, has stepped up expulsions under a 2023 crackdown, blaming Afghans for crime and militancy, charges rejected by Kabul. Trưa 19/8, một trạm cấp cứu vệ tinh 115 của TPHCM đã tiếp nhận thông tin cấp cứu một người đàn ông đột ngột bất tỉnh tại phường Bình Trị Đông. Bệnh nhân là anh T.V.G (39 tuổi, trú tại Phan Anh, TPHCM) đột ngột gục xuống, co giật, nôn ói và hôn mê. Theo người bệnh, bệnh nhân mới phát hiện tăng huyết áp và đái tháo đường nhưng uống thuốc không đều, gần đây tự bỏ thuốc tây chuyển qua thuốc nam, thuốc bắc trị ngứa da. Đến trưa 19/8, anh G. cùng gia đình ngồi nghỉ sau bữa trưa thì đột ngột gục xuống. Người nhà nhanh chóng gọi 115. Bệnh nhân được vận chuyển về bệnh viện. Ảnh: BSCC. Khi ê-kíp cấp cứu đến, bệnh nhân còn thở nhưng hôn mê sâu, đồng tử giãn. Ê-kíp phải đặt nội khí quản để bảo vệ đường thở. Tuy nhiên, trong quá trình đặt, nhiều dịch lẫn thức ăn từ đường hô hấp trào ra nên chuyển ngay vào bệnh viện. Tại bệnh viện, bệnh nhân hôn mê sâu, bóp bóng ambu, oxy qua nội khí quản. Kết quả CT não xuất huyết vùng cầu não cuống não lan vào não thất, rất nặng. Huyết áp 220/120mmHg, HbA1c 11%. Sau thời gian nỗ lực cấp cứu, nhưng bệnh nhân đã tử vong vào chiều ngày 19/8. Các chuyên gia khuyến cáo tăng huyết áp, tiểu đường phải điều trị liên tục, không tự ý bỏ thuốc hoặc thay bằng thuốc nam/bắc. Đột quỵ ở người trẻ rất nguy hiểm, thậm chí đột tử. Đây là bệnh lý về não bộ do tổn thương mạch máu não. Cứ mỗi phút não bị thiếu máu sẽ mất gần hai triệu tế bào thần kinh, vì thế người bệnh đột quỵ cần được cấp cứu ngay lập tức để đảm bảo an toàn và hạn chế tối đa những tổn thương về não. Khi phát hiện người bệnh đột quỵ, người thân nên liên hệ mạng lưới cấp cứu 115 để được hướng dẫn sơ cứu tại chỗ và chuyển người bệnh đến các bệnh viện có đơn vị đột quỵ trong thời gian sớm nhất, được kịp thời can thiệp các kỹ thuật điều trị đột quỵ, giúp việc cấp cứu bệnh nhân đạt hiệu quả cao nhất. Ngoài ra, mỗi người nên trang bị kiến thức về cấp cứu ban đầu để xử trí đúng cho người thân của mình. Để phòng ngừa đột quỵ, mọi người cần kiểm soát tốt các yếu tố nguy cơ như tăng huyết áp, tiểu đường, tăng mỡ máu... Thay đổi lối sống bằng chế độ vận động tập luyện, thức ăn phù hợp, hạn chế rượu bia và tuyệt đối không sử dụng thuốc lá. Nhận biết được triệu chứng của đột quỵ và đến bệnh viện ngay khi khởi phát. "Chính quyền cách mạng non trẻ ra đời giữa muôn vàn khó khăn: thù trong, giặc ngoài, giặc đói, giặc dốt hoành hành, ngân khố trống rỗng. Thế nhưng, chính trong khắc nghiệt ấy đã rèn đúc nên bản lĩnh thép của một Chính phủ của dân, do dân, vì dân. Những người nông dân, công nhân, trí thức được giác ngộ đã 'xắn tay áo' dựng xây Nhà nước mới trên nền tảng độc lập dân tộc và khát vọng tự do, hạnh phúc", Tổng Bí thư nói. Theo thông tin ban đầu, vụ cháy xảy ra vào khoảng 1h40 sáng nay tại một gara ô tô trên đường Cát Linh, phường Hoa Lư (Ninh Bình). Lực lượng công an phong tỏa, khám nghiệm hiện trường tại gara ô tô Vào thời điểm trên, người dân sinh sống xung quanh gara ô tô phát hiện ngọn lửa bùng cháy phía trong nên đã hô hoán nhau dập lửa, đồng thời trình báo cơ quan chức năng. Ngay sau đó, công an phường và Cảnh sát PCCC&CNCH đã huy động cán bộ chiến sĩ cùng phương tiện đến hiện trường dập lửa. Do gara ô tô được xây tường bao xung quanh, nhà khung thép bắn tôn nên lực lượng chức năng đã phải phá cửa vào bên trong để tiến hành dập lửa và khống chế đám cháy. Đến khoảng 2h45, đám cháy được khống chế và dập tắt hoàn toàn. Thời điểm vụ cháy xảy ra, bên trong gara có anh P.V.H. (trú TP Huế), là thợ sơn, đang ngủ ở gác xép bên trong và không kịp thoát ra ngoài. Hậu quả khiến anh H. tử vong, 6 ô tô, nhiều xe máy bị cháy, và nhiều tài sản khác bị thiêu rụi. Sáng 20/8, Sở GD-ĐT Hà Nội tổ chức hội nghị tổng kết năm học 2024-2025, triển khai nhiệm vụ năm học 2025-2026 và phát động thi đua chào mừng kỷ niệm 80 năm Cách mạng Tháng Tám, Quốc khánh (2/9/1945-2/9/2025). Tại hội nghị, ông Trần Thế Cương, Giám đốc Sở GD-ĐT Hà Nội cho biết, sắp tới, trên địa bàn Thủ đô diễn ra nhiều hoạt động, sự kiện, đặc biệt là lễ diễu binh, diễu hành, cùng các chương trình sơ duyệt và tổng duyệt, nhằm chào mừng kỷ niệm 80 năm Cách mạng Tháng Tám, Quốc khánh 2/9. Do đó, sáng 20/8, Sở đã báo cáo với lãnh đạo UBND TP và được phê duyệt cho phép một số trường trong nội đô tạm thời nghỉ học để đảm bảo điều kiện giao thông, giúp lễ diễu binh, diễu hành cũng như việc điều hành giao thông được thông suốt, an toàn. “Những ngày đó, Hà Nội dự kiến sẽ đón số lượng lớn người dân từ khắp các tỉnh thành và khách quốc tế. Ngoài ra, còn có các lực lượng tham gia diễu binh, diễu hành, các phương tiện xe cơ giới di chuyển trên địa bàn. Vì vậy, dự kiến các trường trên địa bàn những tuyến đường có đoàn diễu binh, diễu hành đi qua hoặc các trường trong nội đô sẽ tạm thời cho học sinh nghỉ. Giai đoạn này chưa chính thức vào năm học mới, các trường chỉ tập trung học sinh để thực hiện các sinh hoạt đầu năm”, ông Cương nói. Hà Nội tuyển hơn 900 giáo viên, nhân viên các trường công lập Sở GD-ĐT Hà Nội cho biết, năm 2025 sẽ tuyển dụng 942 viên chức làm việc tại các trường trực thuộc.
