  1. President Trump said Monday that restaurants in Washington, D.C., are more crowded than they’ve been in a long time, despite data suggesting restaurant attendance amid his police takeover has taken a dive. Trump, at an Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the result of his federal takeover is that D.C. is now safe, a week after he brought in the National Guard and federalized the police. “The press says, ‘He’s a dictator, he’s trying to take over.’ No, all I want is security for our people. But people who haven’t gone out to dinner in Washington, D.C., in two years are going out to dinner, and the restaurants the last two days were busier than they’ve been in a long time,” the president said during an Oval Office meeting. Trump, with Zelensky sitting to his side, offered stories of personal friends saying they felt safe enough to have dinner at a D.C. restaurant for the first time in years. “Friends are calling me up, Democrats are calling me up. And they’re saying, ‘Sir, we want to thank you. My wife and I went out to dinner last night for the first time in four years, and Washington, D.C., is safe and you did that in four days,’” the president said. He also shared that another friend told him his son was going to dinner and praised the federal law enforcement in the nation’s capital. “I said, ‘Would you have allowed that to happen a year ago?’” Trump said. “He said, ‘No way. … What you’ve done in incredible.” Data from OpenTable found that seated diners in Washington last week started to drop dramatically compared to last year, after Trump first announced he was taking federal control of D.C.’s police department and deploying the National Guard in the city, in what the administration has described as an effort to fight crime. Beginning Monday, Aug. 11, seated diners at Washington restaurants, according to online reservation numbers, started to drop dramatically in comparison to the prior year, dipping 16 percent. On Wednesday, the number of seated diners at restaurants with reservations fell 31 percent, and Saturday’s drop was 20 percent. During the Oval Office meeting, conservative commentator Brian Glenn offered more anecdotal support for Trump’s argument. He said he recently went out with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) in D.C., joking, “if you can walk around D.C. with MTG and not be attacked, the city is safe.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 2. NEW YORK (Reuters) -Federal judges in Manhattan on Monday extended Jay Clayton's term as the district's top federal prosecutor, as Senate Democrats block U.S. President Donald Trump's nominee for the U.S. Attorney role from being permanently confirmed. Trump in April appointed Clayton, a former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to serve as interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York for a 120-day period while the administration pursued Senate confirmation for him to serve in the role full-time. In a brief statement, the court's judges said they had authorized Clayton to serve in his role until a permanent nominee is appointed by the Senate. His term had been set to expire this week. The Manhattan U.S. Attorney is considered one of the most powerful prosecutors in the country. The office, known for bringing high-profile financial crimes, terrorism and public corruption cases, has historically enjoyed a greater degree of independence from the Justice Department than the other 92 U.S. Attorneys' offices around the U.S. (Reporting by Luc Cohen in New York; Editing by Chris Reese and Daniel Wallis) View the full article
  3. LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — One candidate is Rodrigo Paz, a conservative centrist senator and son of a neoliberal ex-president who is pitching himself as a moderate reformer. The other is former right-wing president Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga galvanizing voters largely through promises of harsh austerity and a scorched-earth approach to transforming Bolivia’s state-directed economic model after 20 years of leftist dominance. At stake in the outcome of Bolivia’s consequential presidential election is the fate of one of South America’s most resource-rich nations, where inflation has soared to heights unseen in decades and polls show growing distrust in major institutions. “There has been a paradigm shift,” said Bolivian sociologist Renzo Abruzzese. “What is truly historic is that the old cycle is over. It has carried away the classical leftist thought that dominated much of the 20th century.” The shadow of unrest among the fervent supporters of charismatic ex-President Evo Morales, the founder of Bolivia’s long-dominant Movement Toward Socialism, or MAS, hangs over the next weeks of campaigning until the men face off in an unprecedented runoff on Oct. 19. Front-runner Rodrigo Paz surprises Screenshots of the Wikipedia entry for Paz's past political allegiances elicited waggish mockery on Bolivian social media Monday about the fluid ideology of this former mayor and governor. Paz began his political career in the Revolutionary Left Movement of his father, former President Jaime Paz Zamora. His movement emerged as a radical Marxist-inspired party and suffered brutal repression under Bolivia's 1964-1982 military dictatorship. Paz was born in exile in Spain. His father pivoted right as a pact with former dictator Hugo Bánzer vaulted him to the presidency in 1989. The younger Paz rose through the political rinks over the past two decades in opposition to Morales' platform of generous subsidies and hefty public investment. He joined Quiroga’s right-wing party before drifting toward Bolivia’s technocratic center. Analysts say that his enigmatic pragmatism — a focus on specific policies rather than ideological crusades — served Paz in Sunday’s election, as it did his father before him. “Voters don’t want hard right or hard left. They want things to function,” said Veronica Rocha, a Bolivian political analyst. “Ambivalence is a political asset right now.” Even his supporters aren't sure how to describe him politically. “I don't care about politics, I'm sick of it, I just support the candidate who I think will steal the least," Emma Gesea Mamani, 57, said from her kiosk, selling snacks to hungry truckers wasting their days in lines for diesel as a result of Bolivia's crippling fuel shortages. Jorge ‘Tuto’ Quiroga promises spending cuts A former vice president, Quiroga briefly held the presidency after then-President and ex-dictator Bánzer retired for health reasons in 2001. Fluent in English and educated at Texas A&M University, Quiroga has fashioned himself into a pro-business modernizer vowing to save Bolivia from what he calls “20 lost years” under the MAS party. He pledges drastic spending cuts, a bailout from the International Monetary Fund and fire sales of Bolivia's inefficient state-run firms. After years of Bolivia's foreign policy alignment with China and Russia, Quiroga vows to restore relations with the United States and claims to be close with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “For years we lived in a time of darkness and lack of opportunities like Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua,” said 60-year-old engineer Jimmy Copa Vargas. “With Tuto’s government, we’ll open ourselves to the world.” Quiroga has run for president three times before, losing twice to Morales. Now 65, he hopes the fourth time's the charm. To attract young voters, Quiroga threw flashy concerts and named a wealthy young entrepreneur as his vice president. He appears in campaign posters wearing a stern expression, tailored suit and Apple Watch and often peppers his speeches with wonky macroeconomic data, fueling the perception among some Bolivians that he's out of touch with the rural poor in this majority-Indigenous nation. “I can't trust that he's not going to be the first one out on a lifeboat when Bolivia starts sinking,” said Luis Quispe, a 38-year-old taxi driver. Paz's unusual campaign — and running mate Paz and his popular running mate, former police captain Edman Lara, crisscrossed Bolivian cities holding modest rallies filled with cheap beer and grilled meat, often recording videos to post on TikTok. Despite undergoing emergency knee surgery earlier in the year, Paz hit dozens of campaign stops in the traditional bastions of Morales' party, engaging with disillusioned voters at once desperate for change but wary of a dramatic lurch to the right after 20 years of the MAS economic model. He has rejected an IMF bailout and proposed “capitalism for all,” touting accessible loans to boost young entrepreneurs and tax breaks to stimulate the formal economy. Many see his running mate, ex-police captain Lara, known here as El Capitán, as the driving force behind his win. After 15 years in the police force, Lara in 2023 gained national prominence by posting tales of police corruption to his followers on TikTok and Instagram. His videos went viral, becoming must-see dispatches for disgruntled Bolivians and social media-savvy youth who tuned in regularly to watch him talk to the camera. He faced disciplinary measures over the exposés and was fired from the force, solidifying his status as something of a folk hero. After his dismissal, he struggled to scrape by selling secondhand clothing. His wife drove for a ride-hailing app. That has resonated with many workers in Bolivia's vast informal economy who have watched politicians enrich themselves while their own finances collapse and the country’s economy spirals. The election may not mark the end of politics for Evo Morales Sunday’s presidential election marked the first since 2002 without Morales or a stand-in on the ballot. Still, the outcome confirmed the maverick ex-union leader’s enduring influence after serving three straight terms marked by relative prosperity and political stability until his 2019 disputed reelection and subsequent ouster. Disqualified from the race by a court ruling on term limits, Morales called on his followers to spoil their ballots against what he deemed an illegitimate election. He campaigned hard for null votes, at times condemning his leftist rivals — Eduardo Del Castillo, nominated by the unpopular President Luis Arce, and Senate leader Andrónico Rodríguez, a former protégé and coca farming union activist — more than the right-wing opposition. While the election results swept aside those splintered MAS party factions, the null-and-void vote captured third place in Sunday’s elections. Spoiled ballots appealed to nostalgic Morales supporters who fault Arce for Bolivia's economic collapse and to voters disillusioned by politicians across the spectrum who they say are more focused more on their own power games than on the people they are supposed to serve. “Those who say Evo Morales is finished are mistaken,” Abruzzese said. “Morales and MAS won’t disappear." ___ Associated Press writer Carlos Valdez in La Paz, Bolivia, contributed to this report. 5. (KRON) — The whereabouts of a man who seemingly disappeared from a fishing vessel along the coast of Oregon and Washington last week remain a mystery. According to the United States Coast Guard, the 65-year-old man was last heard from at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8. Days earlier, the Coast Guard said the man had departed alone on his fishing vessel, the Karolee. Officials said the boat could be seen via its automatic identification system (AIS) and was traveling a constant southerly course at around 4 knots (nautical miles) for several days. The Coast Guard said it made numerous call outs to the Carolee and asked marines to do the same. However, no communication was ever received from the vessel. Michael Franti admits to affair, denies ‘grooming’ allegations after ‘Soulshine’ cruise canceled On Tuesday, Aug. 12, a Coast Guard C-27 fixed-wing aircrew from Air Station Sacramento responded to the Carolee’s position and attempted to make contact. Again, nothing was heard. At the time, the Coast Guard said aircrew noted that the Carolee was rigged for fishing, lights were energized, and a life raft was observed in its cradle. The aircrew flew over the vessel’s course, but found no signs of distress, officials said. The crew returned to Sacramento. Later that day, watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Northwest District command center sent an MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Astoria and Coast Guard Douglas Denman to assist in the search. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Neah Bay was also launched to complete a shoreline search from Cape Flattery toward La Push, Washington. Both vessels searched for hours, by air and sea, along the trackline of where the vessel traveled off the coast of Washington and Oregon. At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Lion intercepted the Karolee and the crew boarded the vessel. No one was onboard and all the safety equipment was located aboard, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard suspended the search around 1:30 p.m. and the Sea Lion towed the Karolee to Eureka, where it is now moored. “Suspending a search for someone is the toughest decision we make in the Coast Guard,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Chelsey Stroud, search and rescue coordinator for the Coast Guard Northwest District. “Our crews diligently search hundreds of miles. We are grateful for the numerous Coast Guard crews along the West Coast who assisted in this search. We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the missing man.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 6. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The nation's largest public utility plans to buy power from an upcoming advanced nuclear plant to help fuel Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama, according to a deal announced Monday. The Tennessee Valley Authority, California-based Kairos Power and Google say the agreement will deliver up to 50 megawatts of energy to the federal utility's grid that powers the data centers. The announcement comes at a time when tech companies expect to require a massive amount of power to fuel data centers behind artificial intelligence, and some of them have been especially interested in new nuclear production. President Donald Trump released a plan last month to boost AI and build data centers across the U.S. and in May signed executive orders aimed at boosting nuclear power. TVA says it is the first U.S. utility to sign a power purchase agreement to buy electricity from a next-generation nuclear reactor. It would rely on the Hermes 2 reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2030. The agreement will power data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama, and support future growth in the region, the news release said. Google will receive clean energy credits associated with the plant. “This collaboration with TVA, Kairos Power, and the Oak Ridge community will accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies and help support the needs of our growing digital economy while also bringing firm carbon-free energy to the electricity system,” Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s global head of data center energy, said in the news release. Hermes 2 is the first reactor under a deal between Kairos Power and Google to bring on 500 megawatts of new, advanced nuclear power production to help cover the tech giant's increased demand for electricity. The new kind of nuclear reactor uses fluoride salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology. It uses molten salt as a coolant. Another test version of the plant in Oak Ridge, named Hermes, does not produce electricity. The Hermes 2 plant received a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in November. The plant still has more steps to complete, including an application for an operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Many next-generation reactors, including Kairos' Hermes 2, will use high-assay low-enriched uranium. The fuel is enriched to a higher level than traditional large nuclear reactors use, allowing the newer reactors to run longer and more efficiently, sit on smaller footprints and produce less waste, according to the Department of Energy. There’s little of it made in the United States right now. But companies are investing to ramp up production, including in Oak Ridge. The Tennessee Valley Authority powers 10 million people across seven southern states. View the full article
  7. The Texas Department of Public Safety is rolling out new Texas drivers licenses and identification cards with enhanced security features starting Monday, Aug. 18. All newly issued drivers licenses and ID cards are made of tamper-resistant polycarbonate material that is difficult to reproduce, according to a DPS news release. The cards will also look a bit different — instead of a gold star, new cards now feature a black, laser-engraved star in the upper right corner to indicate REAL ID compliance. The new cards also reorganize personal information in a clear and easy-to-read format for identification and verification purposes. “The way driver licenses are made can make a big difference in terms of public safety,” said DPS Driver License Division Chief Sheri Gipson. “This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen.” Previously issued cards with the current design are still valid until the expiration date. 8. Newsmax Media NMAX.N has agreed to pay $67 million to Dominion Voting Systems to settle a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit over false claims that the voting machine company rigged the 2020 election against U.S. President Donald Trump, it said on Aug. 18. In an unusual statement, Newsmax said it chose to settle because the Delaware judge handling the case was prejudiced against the company, and it stood by its coverage as fair and balanced. The Delaware Superior Court declined to comment. Denver-based Dominion had sought $1.6 billion when it filed the lawsuit in 2021, accusing Newsmax of spreading false claims that Dominion helped steal the election for President Joe Biden. The New Castle County Courthouse, home to one of Delaware’s Chancery Court rooms.Newsmax and Newsmax Broadcasting LLC agreed to pay Dominion and its affiliates over three installments, starting with $27 million that was paid on Friday. Newsmax will pay $20 million on January 15 and another $20 million on January 15, 2027. The company said it would be paid from its revenue. "We are pleased to have settled this matter," a Dominion spokesperson said in a statement. Newsmax stock rose around 5% on the New York Stock Exchange to $12.75 a share. The company said the agreement resolved all litigation against it over its coverage of the 2020 election when Biden defeated Trump, who then beat Biden in 2024. "From the very beginning, Judge (Eric) Davis ruled in ways that strongly favored the plaintiffs and limited Newsmax's ability to defend itself," Newsmax said. It said it was being punished for not being sympathetic to Biden, who is from Delaware. More: Delaware judge rules $1.6 billion Fox News defamation case to head to trial in April Newsmax said Davis deprived the company of its ability to present a full defense when he ruled in April that Newsmax published defamatory and false statements. While Davis said damages would be determined by a jury trial that was expected later this year, Newsmax said he refused to let the jury hear that Fox Corp FOXA.O and Fox News agreed to pay $787.5 million to Dominion in 2023 to settle similar defamation claims. Newsmax said that information was critical for the jury to understand that Dominion had already been compensated, according to Newsmax. The Fox case was also overseen by Davis. The case was filed in Delaware, where Newsmax was incorporated at the time. It has since reincorporated in Florida, one of many large public companies that have left the state due to alleged bias in its courts. Newsmax also paid $40 million to settle allegations brought by another voting machine company, Smartmatic, in a separate case that was also overseen by Davis. On Aug. 18, Trump said on social media he would move to get rid of mail-in ballots as well as "seriously controversial" voting machines. He did not identify voting machines from any particular company. 9. The average American household pays $300 to $900 per year on trash disposal services. For residents of Colorado, this bill might soon be much larger. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is considering a rule to clamp down on methane emissions from landfills, which are a significant contributor of the greenhouse gas (GHG) nationwide and the third-largest methane emitter in the state, behind the oil and gas industry and agriculture. Last year, Colorado began requiring all landfills in the state to report their GHG emissions to the state's Department of Public Health and Environment. In April, the agency followed up on this rule by releasing Regulation 31, which requires landfills holding 450,000 tons of waste or more—the Environmental Protection Agency lists at least 28 such landfills in Colorado—to regularly monitor and report their methane emissions to state regulators. Those that emit between 732 tons and 2,000 tons of methane annually must conduct quarterly surface monitoring of their methane emissions. Those that emit more than 2,000 tons must conduct quarterly monitoring and install a gas collection and control system within 18 months. These monitoring requirements could be difficult and expensive for operators to comply with. In Colorado's arid climate, the state may experience several consecutive months of dry weather before seeing a wetter month. These outlier months could spike a landfill's surface-level methane emissions past the regulation's threshold, which would force operators to install a gas collection and control system. These can cost up to $10 million. Garfield County, which has a population of about 64,000 people, says a such a system would cost the county landfill "roughly $4 million on the capital side, plus an additional $750,000 to $1 million to operate annually." Regulation 31 also requires landfill operators to install organic biocovers, which cost between $60,000 and $80,000 per acre, and outlaws open flaring—which many landfills do as both a safety and environmental precaution—in most cases by 2029. For landfills that flare, facilities would need "to produce a certain amount of the gas to keep the flare burning, or else it would have to supply alternate fuels to keep it lit." The stringent requirements of Regulation 31 will likely force landfills in the state to increase their tipping fees—Garfield County says it will need to at least double its charges. While larger landfills in more affluent and populated areas of the state will likely be able to survive the changes, these rate hikes could be a death knell for the smaller facilities in Colorado's rural counties. Even if they don't close, scaling back these facilities will require waste to be transported to larger landfills, which will likely cause more GHG emissions from diesel trucking and runaway pollution during transport. Deb Fiscus, the Garfield County landfill manager, said, "These regulations would create more emissions than they would reduce." Other states that have implemented gas-capturing and methane-monitoring regulations have faced challenges with these rules. Some landfills in Oregon, which in 2021 passed more stringent regulations than what Colorado is considering, have been accused of not accurately measuring the emissions at large sections of their facilities. Taxpayers in Washington state have been forced to subsidize landfills as the state has awarded millions of dollars in grants to help waste facilities install gas-capturing systems. The state's Department of Ecology recently awarded funding to a facility in the state's wealthiest county. A vote on Regulation 31 is expected to take place later this week. If the Department of Public Health and Environment moves forward, state regulators will surely herald it as a climate win. However, it could come at the expense of the state's residents and, ironically, the environment. The post Colorado Wants To Make Its Garbage Cleaner. A New Regulation Might Just Make It Pricier and Dirtier. appeared first on Reason.com. View the full article
  10. Brian Glenn, a pro-President Trump commentator and regular face among the White House press corps during the president’s second term, told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky he approved of his outfit during a visit to the White House on Monday. “President Zelensky, you look fabulous in that suit,” Glenn told the Ukrainian leader after Trump called on him to ask a question in the Oval Office. “You look good.” “I said the same thing,” Trump chimed in. “And he’s the one that attacked you last time.” Glenn was one of several right-wing pundits and commentators who criticized Zelensky after a meeting he had with Trump in February for not wearing a suit to the White House. Zelensky showed up Monday wearing a coordinating dark shirt and jacket, though he did not wear a tie. Glenn on Monday told Zelensky he “apologized” for the pushback and said he looked “wonderful.” “And you are in the same suit,” Zelensky told Glenn, smiling. “You see I changed, you have not.” Zelensky was at the White House on Monday for a meeting with Trump and several other European leaders as he looks to negotiate an end to Ukraine’s war with Russia. 12. Donald Trump’s political operation is considering primarying Indiana lawmakers who don’t embrace his mid-decade redistricting plans. “They have a mountain of cash and even more motivation to win the redistricting wars Democrats started long ago,” a person familiar with the White House’s thinking told POLITICO. The electoral threats are an escalation of a pressure campaign as Trump and his allies try to extract more GOP seats in Congress across the country. Indiana has been a top target of those efforts, but resistance among some rank-and-file officials has grown as a number of state lawmakers have publicly opposed those efforts in recent days. “Politics is a team sport, and they prefer to do things with the team … but if Republicans refuse to play team ball, they will very likely begin to focus on upgrading players,” said the person, who was granted anonymity to discuss private operational plans. The comments came as Indiana House Republicans were preparing to convene for an afternoon caucus Monday to discuss redistricting. Lawmakers have already been targeted by robocalls and text messages from a mysterious group called Forward America. There is little public information about the group and its aggressive voter outreach campaign; a POLITICO reporter who lives in Indiana has received about two dozen calls and messages in recent days. A number of Indiana lawmakers are planning a pilgrimage to the White House later this month, responding to an invitation extended prior to Vice President JD Vance’s visit to the state to talk redistricting. “This doesn’t get any easier for Hoosier Republicans who oppose Trump on this issue,” said an Indiana Republican who supports the redistricting push. The Indiana Republican was granted anonymity to speak openly about a sensitive intraparty issue. The threats of primaries are the latest signal that Trump’s political shop intends to amp up the redistricting arms race as Texas lawmakers move forward this week with passing a map creating five new GOP seats in Congress. It also shows they are eager to clamp down on any discomfort within the party over creating new maps ahead of the 2030 Census. Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk said on X Monday that “We will support primary opponents for Republicans in the Indiana State Legislature who refuse to support the team and redraw the maps. I’ve heard from grassroots across the country and they want elected Republicans to stand up and fight for them. It’s time for Republicans to be TOUGH.” The pressure on Indiana lawmakers comes as Texas is moving forward with a redraw of its congressional map at the request of Trump — and California is crafting its own retaliation. On Monday, dozens of Texas Democrats returned to Austin after protesting redistricting by remaining out-of-state for two weeks, denying Republicans the ability to conduct legislative business. As Texas Republicans are back on path to passing their new, more aggressive gerrymander, national Republicans have turned their attention to other states like Florida, Missouri and Indiana. A spokesperson for the Indiana House Republican Caucus did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House also did not respond to a request for comment. View the full article
  13. Ed Martin is going fishing. On Sunday, the lawyer and Donald Trump loyalist tapped to lead a Justice Department “weaponization” group that’s targeting the president’s perceived enemies vowed to rummage around in the lives of New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., in search of what he says could be potential fraud — or ... something. During his 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly targeted people who had been investigated or opposed him with thinly veiled threats of legal prosecution. Now, Martin, in his capacity as head of the so-called Weaponization Working Group at the Department of Justice, has been tasked with putting those prosecutions into action. The list of targets includes James, who led a successful mortgage fraud case against the Trump organization that resulted in a judgment of hundreds of millions of dollars; and Schiff, who served on the House Jan. 6 select committee that documented Trump’s role in fomenting insurrection in 2021. DOJ special attorney Ed Martin. ( Craig Hudson for The Washington Post via Getty Images)Officials at DOJ are investigating both Schiff and James of mortgage fraud; both deny any wrongdoing and accuse the administration of political retribution. Martin, a former “Stop the Steal” organizer and attorney for Jan. 6 insurrectionists, has been assigned to oversee the cases. He’s previously said his group would be used to “shame” people it can’t charge with crimes. In comments to Fox News this Sunday, Martin suggested his group intends to use its powers to poke around in other parts of James’ and Schiff’s lives in search of things unrelated to the mortgage allegations. He said, “We’re gonna go to the very bottom of the facts, and if somebody did something wrong, we’re not only gonna hold them accountable, we’re also gonna look at everything else that they’ve been doing. Because when you’re a liar, you lie not just on one thing. When you’re a cheater, you cheat not just on one thing. When you’re doing corruption, you generally don’t just do it on one thing.” As MSNBC legal analyst Kristy Greenberg noted, Martin seemed to be claiming carte blanche to pry into his target’s lives based on mere suspicion and a presumption that these people must be up to something. Martin personally showed up outside a property James owns in Brooklyn on Friday, telling a neighbor he was just “looking at houses,” according to the New York Post. Martin seems eager to follow the tradition of former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who notoriously used his powers to stalk and harass civil rights figures like Martin Luther King Jr. Or perhaps he’s hoping to take a page out of the playbook of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other dictators Trump admires, who haven’t hesitated to put their political opponents in prison or conjure up “kompromat” that can be used against them. 14. Last week, following the attempted carjacking of one of his staffers, Donald Trump deployed federal troops to Washington, D.C., to combat what he called an “out of control” crime wave in the city. The president’s swift response stands in stark contrast with his behavior on Jan. 6, 2021, when officers waited hours for National Guard troops to provide backup as his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. Former D.C. Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanone joined Ali Velshi on Saturday and called out the president for his hypocrisy over crime in the nation’s capital. Fanone accused Trump of sitting “idly by for hours while officers like myself were being beaten and almost killed” on Jan. 6. “Donald Trump didn’t see fit to call in the National Guard then,” Fanone said. The former officer also took issue with Trump’s claim that crime in Washington is on the rise, despite city data that says otherwise. “There’s no spike in crime that we’re experiencing in Washington, D.C., and even then, what is it exactly that the National Guard will do to quell that?” Fanone said that while there is value in federal and local forces working together to combat crime, what is unfolding in D.C. isn’t about protecting the city’s residents — it’s about optics. “I worked alongside federal partners as a Metropolitan police officer. There is a place for that. That place is not having roving bands of officers in tactical gear, aimlessly walking around.” Fanone said Trump is using federal agents to create “the optics of an occupying force” and spread “fear.” “Citizens don’t want to feel as though they’re occupied. They want to be safe, but they don’t want to feel like they’re being, you know, occupied by an army. And that’s what you have now taking over in D.C., and it’s not an efficient use of those resources,” he added. Fanone didn’t direct his ire just at Trump, he also accused federal law enforcement agents — particularly ICE — of being complicit in the president’s overreach, calling the agency “Donald Trump’s Police Department.” Fanone said he had a simple message for “everyone in the law enforcement community that’s being co-opted by the Trump administration to do things that are immoral, unethical and, in many cases, unconstitutional: Quit your job.” “There’s a lot of other jobs out there,” Fanone said. “I quit my job at the police department, and I got to tell you, when it comes to law enforcement, the grass is always greener somewhere else.” You can watch Fanone’s full reaction in the clip at the top of the page. 15. 16. ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A man has been charged with sexually exploiting a minor after taking a juvenile from Iowa to Reidsville, according to a Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office news release. On Sunday, Rockingham County deputies were told by the Fairfield Police Department in Fairfield, Iowa, about a missing female juvenile from their jurisdiction. Investigators with the FPD learned the juvenile had been texting with a man and that the juvenile had been picked up by the man in Fairfield and taken to Rockingham County. The FPD then requested help in checking an address in Reidsville for the missing juvenile. She was found by RCSO deputies at a home on Willow Street in Reidsville with 25-year-old John Michael Johnson. RCSO detectives and the Rockingham County Department of Social Services responded and began investigating. Johnson was interviewed and, after consultation with the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office, was charged with felony second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and felony solicitation by computer. Johnson was given a $850,000 secured bond. The investigation is ongoing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 19. Joining forces from three other Republican-led states, the Mississippi National Guard will deploy 200 troops to Washington as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing federal policing and immigration overhaul in the nation’s capital. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said in a statement Monday that he has approved the deployment of approximately 200 Mississippi National Guard Soldiers to Washington, D.C. “Crime is out of control there, and it’s clear something must be done to combat it,” Reeves said. Mississippi joins three other states that have pledged to deploy hundreds of National Guard members to the nation’s capital to bolster the Republican administration’s operation aiming to transform policing in the Democratic-led city through a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness. 3 GOP-led states to send hundreds of National Guard troops to DC West Virginia said it was deploying 300 to 400 troops, South Carolina pledged 200 and Ohio said it will send 150 in the coming days, deployments that built on top of President Donald Trump’s initial order that 800 National Guard troops deploy as part of the federal intervention. Trump’s executive order that launched the federal operation declared a “crime emergency” in the District of Columbia and initiated a takeover of Washington’s police department. The administration has ordered local police to cooperate with federal agents on immigration enforcement, orders that would contradict local laws prohibiting such collaboration. “D.C. has been under siege from thugs and killers, but now, D.C. is back under Federal Control where it belongs,” Trump wrote on his social media website a day after issuing his order. “The White House is in charge. The Military and our Great Police will liberate this City, scrape away the filth, and make it safe, clean, habitable and beautiful once more!” During a Monday news conference, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back on Trump’s characterization of the city and voiced skepticism about the administration’s intentions in flooding the capital with troops and federal agents. “We don’t have any authority over the D.C. Guard or any other guards, but I think it makes the point that this is not about D.C. crime,” Bowser said of the administration and states deploying National Guard members onto the streets of the capital. “The focus should be on violent crime,” Bowser continued. “Nobody is against focusing on driving down any level of violence. And so if this is really about immigration enforcement the administration should make that plain.” Timely payments for Guard deployed to DC a concern, lawmaker says National Guard members in the District of Columbia have been assisting law enforcement with tasks including crowd control and patrolling landmarks such as the National Mall and Union Station. Their role has been limited thus far, and it remains unclear why additional troops would be needed. Federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Secret Service and other agencies have patrolled high traffic areas around the capital over the last week. ICE officers, who work under the Department of Homeland Security, have made arrests in neighborhoods across the city, dispersed some public gatherings and torn pro-immigrant signs, according to videos published by the administration. The White House has touted various arrests that local police and federal agents have made across the city since Trump’s executive order. Federal agents have made 380 arrests in the week since the start of the operation and in some cases issued charges to detained people. The White House has touted the surge of agents on social media and posted pictures of people arrested by local and federal officers. “Washington, DC is getting safer every night thanks to our law enforcement partners,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote on social media. “Just this weekend, 137 arrests were made and 21 illegal firearms were seized. In total, there have been nearly 400 arrests—and we are not slowing down.” Amid the crackdown, the administration has received criticism for the conduct of some federal agents, who in several high-profile incidents have arrested people while wearing masks that hide their identity and declined to identify themselves to media or members of the public when questioned. Bowser said Monday that she had asked D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith to seek answers from the administration about the use of masked police. “It’s very important to us that agents be identified,” Bowser said. “There’s no reason for a law enforcement official to be masked.” Over the weekend in Washington, protesters pushed back on federal law enforcement and National Guard troops fanning out in the city. Scores of protesters gathered in the city’s Dupont Circle on Saturday and marched to the White House. Associated Press writer Jeff Amy in Atlanta contributed to this report. View the full article
