  2. A new British marque, Garagisti & Co., has unveiled an audacious supercar concept aimed squarely at nostalgists: a 6.6-liter, naturally aspirated V12 paired with a six-speed manual transmission in a package targeting roughly one metric ton curb weight. The model, called the GP1, debuted Friday as a design study, with the company positioning it as a modern answer to the analog greats of the 1980s through early 2000s. The firm says the bespoke V-12 is rated at 789 brake horsepower and drives the rear wheels through a traditional manual gearbox—an increasingly rare specification in a sector dominated by dual-clutch transmissions and electrified assistance. 12 Secret Products Serious Collectors Swear By At a claimed 1,000 kilograms (about 2,200 pounds), the GP1 would boast a power-to-weight figure of nearly 790 bhp per metric ton. Garagisti & Co. has not released performance metrics such as 0–60 mph or top speed, but on paper the output-to-mass ratio suggests supercar-class acceleration. The company says the cabin and structure emphasize lightness, including a carbon-fiber monocoque, sparse trim and minimal driver interfaces. “What if the golden age of analogue supercars never ended?” company president Marco Escudero said in remarks accompanying the reveal. “We brought together some of the best minds in the world and answered that question with our hands, our hearts, and our passion. The GP1 is our answer.” Daily Driven Collectibles: The Best Upgrades That Don’t Hurt Resale Visually, the GP1 leans into classic low-slung proportions and familiar Italianate cues—enough that observers may mistake it at a glance for a product from far older nameplates. The firm says customers would be able to tailor liveries and finishes extensively. For now, however, the GP1 exists as renderings and early engineering targets. Garagisti & Co. plans a run of just 25 cars priced just under $4 million each, with build slots and final specifications contingent on customer commitments. No powertrain supplier, emissions compliance plan or homologation pathway has been publicly detailed. The announcement lands amid a split in the high-end market. Established brands are pushing hybrid or full-electric flagships, while a handful of boutique efforts are chasing purist appeal with manual gearboxes and naturally aspirated engines. If realized, the GP1 would be one of very few modern V-12s available with a clutch pedal. Skeptics note that translating a lightweight, high-output brief into a road-legal product is a complex—and costly—undertaking. Rear-drive dynamics at this power level can also demand significant development time to reconcile performance with approachability. Garagisti & Co. counters that its minimalist interior, carbon structure and manual transmission are deliberate choices to remove complexity and return focus to driver involvement. The company has not disclosed a prototype timeline, testing program or delivery window. Prospective buyers are being courted with the promise of deep customization and a car positioned as both track-capable and road-legal. Whether the GP1 joins the small modern pantheon of manual-V-12 exotics will likely hinge on how many collectors sign on to finance the leap from screen to shop floor. For enthusiasts pining for the “analog soul” of another era, Garagisti & Co. is betting that the formula still resonates—at a price. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter View the full article
  3. Images of a classic Dodge Super Bee that was tragically wrecked after the throttle reportedly became stuck have saddened many. After all, to see what was obviously a beautiful Mopar muscle car reduced to a mangled mess is just too much for many gearheads and even regular folk. Watch a drag racer crash big, then walk away unhurt. According to Motorcity Modified Auto Club out of the Detroit area, the crash happened in that area. Supposedly, a shop owner was taking the old Dodge out for a spin, we don’t know if it was to diagnose a problem or after something was repaired, when things literally went sideways. Image via MMAC/FacebookWe can only imagine the Super Bee was going fast when it crashed. The picture of it before the poor thing was hauled onto a wrecker shows it next to some trees and there appears to be some damage to the trunks, so it’s not a huge logical leap to conclude those are what finally stopped the muscle car’s forward progress. There’s no word on if the driver was injured, but we don’t see how he couldn’t have been. However, not everyone is buying the supposed story. We can’t confirm if that’s indeed how the Super Bee was crashed, but it sounds plausible. But some gearheads think the story is garbage, saying you can just turn off the ignition and coast to a stop. Image via MMAC/FacebookBut we believe the story because incidents like this have been documented. Take, for example, the infamous Autotopia LA crash from a while back. That was thanks to a stuck throttle and failed brakes, so it is obviously possible. Since we don’t really know the story about this crash, we’re suspending all judgment until more can be learned. For now, what we know for sure if a beautiful classic Dodge Super Bee has been reduced to scraps, at least until someone who values the muscle car undertakes a full restoration. 4. ⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious Bonhams|Cars nets $44.7 million and 96% sell-through at The Quail, led by a record $8.6M Bugatti Divo sale.Bonhams|Cars tallied $44.7 million in sales and a 96% sell-through rate at its Quail Auction during Monterey Car Week, propelled by a no-reserve group of modern hypercars that drew standing-room-only crowds and multiple auction records. The single-day sale offered 109 lots spanning contemporary exotics, hot-rod stalwart Vic Edelbrock Jr.’s collection, and pre- and postwar classics. More than 700 bidders and guests packed the tent, with most action coming from the floor rather than phones, contributing to brisk hammer times across the catalog. Center stage was a rare no-reserve “Future Classics” ensemble of 24 late-model supercars and hypercars. The headline result came from a 2020 Bugatti Divo, which triggered a prolonged bidding fight before selling for $8.6 million — a world auction record for the model. Showing fewer than 800 miles and previously exhibited in the Petersen Automotive Museum’s “Hypercars” show, the Divo was billed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for collectors. Two additional Bugattis also landed among the day’s top prices: a 2023 Chiron Super Sport brought $4.46 million and a 2021 Chiron Pur Sport achieved $3.96 million. The group’s breadth extended beyond Molsheim badges. A 2022 Apollo Intensa Emozione “Ocean Dragon” realized $3.4 million, a model record at auction, while a 2017 Pagani Huayra Roadster with just over 800 miles commanded $3.3 million. Bonhams|Cars executives said the combination of no-reserve consignments, tight curation and an engaged on-site audience lifted clearance rates and pushed best-in-class examples beyond guidance. The mood in the room remained buoyant from the opening lots through the supercar run, with frequent applause as paddle wars pushed past estimates. Beyond the modern machinery, the catalog’s variety helped sustain momentum. The Edelbrock collection attracted significant interest from American performance buyers, while traditional Monterey staples — coachbuilt Europeans and period racers — benefited from spillover energy generated by the hypercar segment. The strong sell-through rate mirrored a wider Car Week theme: top-quality, low-mileage examples with clear histories continue to find ready buyers, even as average offerings face more scrutiny. Specialists cited several factors, including limited production numbers, museum or single-owner provenance, and fresh-to-market status for many of the contemporary lots. While Bonhams|Cars did not disclose aggregate presale estimates, the final total surpassed internal expectations, according to people familiar with the sale. The auction house said further details — including lot-by-lot results and post-sale transactions — would be published following routine settlement and reconciliation. The Quail Auction has emerged as a bellwether for late-model collectible demand during Monterey week, and this year’s performance suggests the appetite for scarce, headline-ready supercars remains intact. With the Divo and Apollo IE posting model records and the Chiron pair trading near the front of the market, consignors and rival houses will likely recalibrate expectations heading into the autumn season. 6. By Tom Balmforth, Elizabeth Piper and Anastasiia Malenko LONDON/KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine and its European allies have been buoyed by Donald Trump's promise of security guarantees for Kyiv to help end the war in Ukraine but face many unanswered questions, including how willing Russia will be to play ball. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hailed Monday's extraordinary summit at the White House with the U.S. president as a "major step forward" towards ending Europe's deadliest conflict in 80 years and towards setting up a trilateral meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin and Trump in the coming weeks. Zelenskiy was flanked by the leaders of allies including Germany, France and Britain at the summit and his warm rapport with Trump contrasted sharply with their disastrous Oval Office meeting in February. But beyond the optics, the path to peace remains deeply uncertain and Zelenskiy may be forced to make painful compromises to end the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 and which analysts say has killed or wounded more than 1 million people. While the Washington talks allowed for a temporary sense of relief in Kyiv, there was no let-up in the fighting. Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles in an overnight attack on Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said, the largest this month. The energy ministry said Russia had targeted energy facilities in the central Poltava region, home to Ukraine's only oil refinery, causing big fires. "The good news is that there was no blow-up (at the White House). Trump didn't demand Ukrainian capitulation nor cut off support. The mood music was positive and the trans-Atlantic alliance lives on," John Foreman, a former British defence attache to Kyiv and Moscow, told Reuters. "On the downside, there is a great deal of uncertainty about the nature of security guarantees and what exactly the U.S. has in mind." Ukraine's allies were to hold talks in the so-called "Coalition of the Willing" format on Tuesday to discuss the way forward. NATO chiefs of defence will also discuss security guarantees for Ukraine on Tuesday, a source close to the matter said, without mentioning further details. Zelenskiy said on Tuesday his officials were working on the content of the security guarantees. Russia has made no explicit commitment to a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow did not reject any formats for discussing the peace process in Ukraine but any meeting of national leaders "must be prepared with utmost thoroughness". “It doesn’t smell like peace yet. I think Putin will not go for it, he is not that kind of person," said a 63-year-old resident of Kyiv, Oksana Melnyk. "I really wanted it all to end peacefully, but, unfortunately, a lot of our people died and it is very bitter.” RED LINES Putin has warned that Russia will not tolerate troops from the NATO alliance on Ukrainian soil. He has also shown no sign of backing down from demands for territory, including land not under Russia's military control, following his summit talks with Trump last Friday in Alaska. Trump has not specified what form U.S. security guarantees could take, and backed away from insisting that Russia agree to a ceasefire before any peace negotiations kick off in earnest. Neil Melvin, director, International Security at the Royal United Services Institute think tank, said Russia could drag out the war while trying to deflect U.S. pressure with a protracted peace negotiation. "I think behind this there's a struggle going on between Ukraine and the Europeans on one side, and the Russians on the other, not to present themselves to Trump as the obstacle to his peace process." "They're all tiptoeing around Trump" to avoid any blame, he said, adding that on security guarantees, "the problem is that what Trump has said is so vague it's very hard to take it seriously". The last direct talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Turkey in July but not at head of state level. Putin also declined Zelenskiy's public invitation to meet him face-to-face in May. Jaroslava Barbieri, a research fellow for the Ukraine Forum at Chatham House, said the European leaders and Zelenskiy did a "quite a good job in trying to keep the U.S. on board", using a choreographed "flurry of thank yous" to keep Trump engaged. She said the European leaders' and Zelenskiy's message to Trump was to be "cautious about whatever the Kremlin supposedly promises you, because ... whatever promises they give, it's not worth the paper they're written on". Orysia Lutsevych, a research fellow at Chatham House, said the worst case scenario "of Trump selling Ukraine out to Putin was avoided" at Monday's talks, but she added: "A bilateral with Putin is dangerous for Zelenskiy. Even if it happens, which is highly unlikely, Putin will blame him for obstructing peace, being unreasonable. In such a case, the question is: who Donald Trump will trust and blame for his failed peacemaking efforts." 12. BEIRUT (AP) — One of Lebanon's largest factories making the highly addictive amphetamine Captagon has been discovered and destroyed as part of rare security cooperation between intelligence agencies in Iraq and Lebanon, Iraq’s Interior Ministry said. The announcement late Monday came a month after the Lebanese army issued a statement about the discovery of a drug factory in Yammoune village in the eastern Bekaa Valley with large amounts of drugs inside. Iraq’s Interior Ministry said the Lebanese operation in Yammoune in mid-July came after Iraqi authorities gave Beirut information about the factory. A senior Lebanese security official on Tuesday said it was not clear why Iraqi authorities made the announcement Monday, adding that Lebanon’s security agencies are always in contact with Arab and international security agencies. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Regional states are intensifying efforts to fight the drug trade. The vast majority of the world’s Captagon is produced in neighboring Syria, with some production in Lebanon. Western governments estimate that Captagon has generated billions of dollars in revenue for former Syrian President Bashar Assad, his associates and allies. The former government in Damascus denied the accusations. After Assad was removed from power in December when Islamist fighters took over Damascus, the fight against drug production intensified in Lebanon and Syria. In February, the interior ministers of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Iraq held talks in the Jordanian capital on ways to combat the illegal drug trade and agreed to set up a joint telecommunications cell to exchange information. Smugglers have used Jordan as a corridor to smuggle Captagon pills out of Syria, mainly to oil-rich Arab Gulf states. View the full article
  13. PARIS (Reuters) -A petition to stop the Bayeux tapestry being loaned by France to the British Museum in London has attracted more than 40,000 signatures from people concerned that movement could damage the Medieval relic. Art historian Didier Rykner launched the petition on the platform Change.org after French President Emmanuel Macron offered during a trip to London in July to loan the tapestry as part of an art exchange. "It's already very fragile. There are tears and holes in the fabric. Any movement, any vibration can cause damage," Rykner told Reuters. "You cannot use a fragile piece of art for diplomacy." The British Museum said in a statement its conservation and collections management team is experienced at handling and caring for this type of material and is working with colleagues in France on the tapestry's display. While the origins of the 70-metre (76 yards) long Bayeux tapestry are obscure, it is believed to have been the work of English embroiderers, whose stitching tells the story of the Norman invasion in 1066 and the arrow that hit England's King Harold in the eye. In the years after William the Conqueror took the English throne, the tapestry was taken to France, where it has remained, displayed at the Bayeux Museum in Normandy since 1983 after decorating Bayeux cathedral for seven centuries. It has been taken to Paris twice. "The last two times it was moved was first by Napoleon and then by the Germans (during the Nazi occupation). I cannot think of why you would want to be the third to move it," Rykner said. The Bayeux museum will close for renovations for two years starting later this year, and the tapestry will need to be rehoused during that time, a representative for the museum said. The French state owns the tapestry, and France's Ministry of Culture will be responsible for coordinating the tapestry's transfer to a temporary home. It was not immediately available for comment. 14. Rescuers and residents resumed searching on Tuesday for survivors as the death toll from five days of torrential rain rose to almost 400, with authorities warning monsoon downpours would continue until the weekend. Torrential rains across Pakistan's north have caused flooding and landslides that have swept away entire villages, leaving many residents trapped in the rubble and scores missing. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said 356 people were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a mountainous province in Pakistan's northwest bordering Afghanistan, since Thursday evening. Dozens more were killed in surrounding regions, taking the toll in the past five days to almost 400. Rescuers dug through mud and stone in hard-hit Dalori village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the hope of finding survivors and the bodies of people missing. Villagers stood watching and praying as the rescuers worked, a day after the search was halted by more intense rain. Umar Islam, a 31-year-old labourer, struggled to hold back his tears as he spoke about his father, who was killed on Monday. "Our misery is beyond explanation," Islam told AFP as neighbours tried to console him. "In a matter of minutes, we lost everything we had," he said. "Our lives are ruined." Fazal Akbar, 37, another villager, described the aftermath of the floods as "terrifying". "It happened so suddenly that no one even had a minute to react. Announcements were made from the mosque, and villagers rushed to begin the rescue themselves," said Akbar. "In less than 20 minutes, our village was reduced to ruins." - More rain - Many roads have been damaged, making it hard for rescuers to reach areas damaged by the floods. Communication also remains difficult, with phone networks hit in flood-affected areas. Heavy rain also began falling on Tuesday in southern parts of Pakistan that had so far been spared the worst of the monsoon downpours. The rain was expected to continue until Saturday, and "another spell is to start by the end of the month", said NDMA chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik. More than 700 people have been killed in the monsoon rains since June 26, the NDMA said, with close to 1,000 injured. The monsoon is expected to last until mid-September. Authorities also warned of urban flooding in big cities in coastal areas of Sindh province, including the financial capital Karachi, "due to weak infrastructure". It has also been raining in 15 districts in neighbouring Balochistan province, and the main highway connecting it with Sindh has been blocked for heavy vehicles, said provincial disaster official Muhammad Younis. Between 40 and 50 houses had been damaged in two districts, he said. Landslides and flash floods are common during the monsoon season, which typically begins in June and lasts until the end of September. Pakistan is among the world's most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change and is increasingly facing extreme weather events. Monsoon floods submerged one-third of Pakistan in 2022, resulting in approximately 1,700 deaths. zz-stm/pbt View the full article
  15. Flight attendants protest in front of the Air Canada headquarters near Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Airport in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on August 17, 2025. Credit - Andrej Ivanov - AFP via Getty Images. Air Canada has said that it will “gradually resume” operations after reaching an agreement with the trade union representing 10,000 flight attendants, ending a days-long strike in which all flights were grounded. The airline said an agreement was reached following mediation with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), and the union agreed for striking members to return to work immediately, in a statement published Tuesday. “The suspension of our service is extremely difficult for our customers. We deeply regret and apologize for the impact on them of this labour disruption. Our priority now is to get them moving as quickly as possible,” said President and CEO of Air Canada Michael Rousseau. Rousseau added that restarting Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations is a “complex undertaking,” warning that a full return to normal service could take a week or longer. “The first flights are scheduled for the evening of August 19, but customers are advised that the airline’s return to full, regular service may require seven-to-ten days as aircraft and crew are out of position. During this process, some flights will be cancelled over the next seven to ten days until the schedule is stabilized. Only customers with confirmed bookings whose flights are shown as operating should go to the airport,” the statement read. Canada’s largest airline company said that customers with tickets can check their flight’s status on its website or the Air Canada mobile app. In response to the agreement, CUPE said: “Unpaid work is over. We have reclaimed our voice and our power. When our rights were taken away, we stood strong, we fought back — and we secured a tentative agreement that our members can vote on,” in a statement on Tuesday. Flight attendants went on strike after Air Canada gave wage increases to certain employees, including pilots with a 26% rise in 2024, a mostly male-filed role according to CUPE. In contrast, the union said that flight attendants, who are mainly women, received a lower 8% increase in 2025. The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) had ordered all Air Canada flight attendants on strike to return to work by 2 p.m. ET Sunday, August 17, after a directive from Minister for Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu. In response, National President of CUPE Mark Hancock said that the union “would not back down.” Contact us at [email protected]. View the full article
  16. JERUSALEM (AP) — A key mediator on Tuesday stressed the urgency of brokering a ceasefire in Gaza after Hamas showed a “positive response” to a proposal, but Israel has yet to weigh in as its military prepares an offensive on some of the territory's most populated areas. The prospect of an expanded assault on areas sheltering hundreds of thousands of civilians has sparked condemnation inside Israel and abroad. Most war-weary Palestinians see no place in Gaza as safe, not even declared humanitarian zones, after 22 months of war. Many Israelis, who rallied in the hundreds of thousands on Sunday, fear the offensive will further endanger the remaining hostages in Gaza. Just 20 of the 50 remaining are thought to be alive. “If this (ceasefire) proposal fails, the crisis will exacerbate,” Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry, told journalists, adding they have yet to hear from Israel on it. Witkoff is invited to rejoin the talks Qatar is among the countries mediating to end the war. Al-Ansari said Hamas had agreed to terms under discussion. He declined to provide details but said the proposal was “almost identical” to one previously advanced by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. That U.S. proposal was for a 60-day ceasefire, during which some of the remaining hostages would be released and the sides would negotiate a lasting ceasefire and the return of the rest. “If we get to a deal, it shouldn’t be expected that it would be instantaneously implemented,” al-Ansari said. “We’re not there yet.” That cautious assessment came a day after the foreign minister of Egypt, another mediator, said they were were pushing for a phased deal and noted that Qatar's prime minister had joined the talks between Hamas leaders and Arab mediators. Witkoff has been invited to rejoin the talks, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told The Associated Press. Witkoff pulled out of negotiations less than a month ago, accusing Hamas of not acting in good faith. It was not clear how Witkoff has responded to the invitation. An Israeli official on Monday said the country's positions, including on the release of all hostages, had not changed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said a final push is needed to “complete the defeat of Hamas" He has vowed to continue the war until all the hostages are returned and Hamas has been disarmed. 28 Palestinians killed in Gaza Hospitals in Gaza said they had received the bodies of 28 Palestinians killed Tuesday, including women and children, as Israeli strikes continued across the territory. Among them were nine people killed while seeking aid, officials at two hospitals told The Associated Press. The deaths were recorded across Gaza, including in central Deir al-Balah, southern Khan Younis and near aid distribution points, hospital officials said. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an Israeli-backed private American contractor that has become the primary distributor of aid in Gaza since May, operates those sites. Nasser Hospital also said an airstrike killed a mother, father and three children in their tent overnight in Muwasi, a camp for hundreds of thousands of civilians. “An entire family was gone in an instant. What was their fault?” the children’s grandfather, Majed al-Mashwakhi, said, sobbing. Neither the GHF nor Israel’s military immediately responded to questions about the casualties reported by Nasser, Awda and al-Aqsa hospitals. The Palestinian death toll in the war surpassed 62,000 on Monday, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals. The ministry does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants, but says women and children make up around half of them. In addition to that toll, other Palestinians have died from malnutrition and starvation, including three reported in the past 24 hours, the ministry said Tuesday. It says 154 adults have died of malnutrition-related causes since late June, when it began counting such deaths, and 112 children have died of malnutrition-related causes since the war began with the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Aid groups continue to struggle to deliver supplies to Gaza. Israel imposed a full blockade in March, then allowed limited aid to resume two and a half months later. The Israeli military body in charge of humanitarian aid to Gaza, COGAT, said 370 trucks of aid entered Tuesday — still below the 600 per day that the United Nations and partners say is needed. A new attempt to deliver aid by sea Israel has controlled all Gaza border crossings since seizing the Palestinian side of Rafah in May 2024. With land routes restricted, aid groups have attempted to deliver supplies by air and sea. COGAT said Tuesday that 180 pallets of aid were airdropped into Gaza with help from countries including Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and France. The U.N. and partners have called airdrops expensive, inefficient and even dangerous for people on the ground. A ship carrying 1,200 tons of food left Cyprus on Tuesday for the Israeli port of Ashdod loaded with pasta, rice, baby food and canned goods that were pre-screened in Cyprus. ___ Magdy reported from Cairo and Gambrell from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. 19. View the full article

22. Spotlight PA is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit newsroom producing investigative and public-service journalism that holds power to account and drives positive change in Pennsylvania. Sign up for our free newsletters. HARRISBURG — Pharmacies are disappearing across Pennsylvania, leaving some patients with fewer options and longer journeys to access the medications they need. A July report from Spotlight PA examined the impact of hundreds of pharmacy closures, explored the debate over who’s to blame, and looked at action taken by state lawmakers. About 30 readers responded, sharing their experiences with the issue. Some described increased travel, longer wait times, and other problems from having to switch pharmacies. The three maps below show how widespread the problem is in the state and illustrate the areas that have been hardest hit. An additional chart highlights the large role that Rite Aid plays in the state. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to sell off “substantially all of its assets” as part of bankruptcy proceedings and it has continued to close stores. As of early July, even after closing hundreds of Pennsylvania stores in recent years, Rite Aid was still among the top pharmacy chains in the state based on licensing data. Here are three things you need to know: It’s a statewide problem.More than 800 licensed pharmacies have closed since January 2020. While some new ones opened during that time period, it wasn’t enough to make up the difference and the state still lost hundreds of pharmacies overall. Some state lawmakers have cited the closures as they push for legislation that would affect reimbursements pharmacies receive for their work. Some areas have been hit particularly hard.John DeJames, president of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association, previously told Spotlight PA the biggest impact usually occurs in rural locations and underserved areas. “So the people that need the help the most are the ones … getting hit the most,” he said. A June analysis from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania found that nine rural Pennsylvania counties would see the biggest percent change in total pharmacies if all Rite Aid locations were to close without a replacement. The “closures may further widen health disparities and reduce access to essential care for many communities,” the legislative agency’s report said. The closures are also a concern in urban areas. The director of York city’s Bureau of Health previously told Spotlight PA that the closure of the downtown Rite Aid “is a huge loss.” Rite Aid had a big reach in Pennsylvania.A Spotlight PA analysis of pharmacy data shows that Rite Aid was one of the leading chains in the state, highlighting just how big of an impact the recent closures have had on Pennsylvania. Spotlight PA reached out to each of the businesses listed in the chart above to share the newsroom’s findings and what its numbers were based upon. Responses varied. A spokesperson for Weis Markets confirmed that Spotlight PA’s information matched the company’s own list. A spokesperson for Giant Eagle in August said it has increased its number of Pennsylvania pharmacies since July. A Walmart spokesperson in August said it has 134 pharmacies in Pennsylvania — one higher than Spotlight PA identified by searching for the names “Walmart” or “Wal-Mart” in July’s state licensing data. Asked about the difference, a Pennsylvania Department of State spokesperson said the additional Walmart pharmacy was in an “active-address pending approval” status due to a location change. (Spotlight PA’s chart above also does not include stores under the name Sam’s Club, which is a membership club and division of Walmart.) A GIANT Company spokesperson said the business operates under multiple names, including seven Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania. Those ones bring the company’s total pharmacies in the state to 115, according to the company spokesperson and state licensing data. A CVS spokesperson said it considers itself to have 455 traditional pharmacy locations in the state. One of the locations that Spotlight PA identified for CVS was a mail-order pharmacy, while two others were part of CVS’ specialty business, the spokesperson said. The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association’s CEO, Victoria Elliott, called the Rite Aid bankruptcy announcement in May “another difficult chapter” that “brings not only professional uncertainty but also a profound personal impact.” The organization has offered resources for professionals who are affected and for patients who run into problems transferring prescriptions. “Let’s work together to protect the pharmacy profession and ensure patients across PA continue to receive the care they deserve,” the association said in a June post. In August, citing questions related to the Rite Aid closures, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys urged health insurers and pharmacy benefit managers to take action to ensure patients have convenient access to retail pharmacies. Those businesses should have dedicated methods, such as hotline or web portals, to help patients with prescription transfers, Humphreys said in a notice. He said the department expects insurers to provide notification if they can’t meet the state’s “time or distance standards related to pharmacy access for patients affected by a Rite Aid closure.” The department’s notice was specific to commercial insurance under the department’s jurisdiction. But insurers and pharmacy benefit managers “are strongly encouraged” to be flexible ”to ensure adequate and accessible retail pharmacy access for all those for whom they provide or oversee prescription drug coverage,” Humphreys said. 23. It’s a question, a lingering suspicion that has bedeviled nearly every generation: Are the kids these days getting more rude, more brash, more grossly unapologetic? “We have stories of Emily dealing with this question, we have stories of our grandmother dealing with this question,” says Lizzie Post, the great-great-granddaughter of etiquette maven Emily Post and co-president of the Emily Post Institute. “Five generations gives us the length of time to prove this one out that we really do constantly look back at times nostalgically and say that they were more polite.” Society certainly seems to think we’ve collectively gotten more rude. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, nearly half of the country believes people’s behavior is more impolite than before the pandemic. Enter any public space and you’re bound to encounter someone having a phone call on speaker, fellow passengers mixing up egg salad on a plane, or students leaving class unannounced. These incidents inevitably become flashpoints of heated debate online. Unchecked incivility has wide-reaching consequences. Bearing witness to behavior that you find rude, whether face-to-face or electronically, leads to worse mood and decreased cognitive performance. When someone is rude to you, you may become defensive and less likely to cooperate — no one wants to spend time and energy interacting with a jerk. Impoliteness is actually contagious, spreading from one person to another: When you experience something impolite, you’re more likely to spot other supposedly rude behavior and act impolitely yourself. “Are we ruder? I don’t know, but I know we’re less aware of each other, we do not pay as much attention to our impact on one another.” Lizzie Post Post can’t say for sure whether our current culture is more impolite than generations’ past, but she does believe we’re living through a crisis of attention that can lead to disrespectful behaviors. Perpetually distracted and always looking at screens, we’ve become accustomed to switching topics mid-conversation or checking email over dinner. And that’s just how we treat the people we know. We hardly consider the comfort of strangers when playing a YouTube video sans headphones on a crowded bus. “Are we ruder?” Post says. “I don’t know, but I know we’re less aware of each other, we do not pay as much attention to our impact on one another, and we have more ways to be annoying to each other or rude or dismissive than we’ve ever had before.” There may also be bigger factors underlying our supposed epidemic of rudeness. Christine Porath, a professor at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and the author of Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace, conducted a global survey in 2022 of 2,000 people who either had customer-facing jobs or observed those who did. Porath found that 73 percent of respondents said it wasn’t unusual for customers to behave badly, compared to 61 percent who said the same in her 2012 survey. “The number one reason that I found for people being rude is feeling stressed or overwhelmed,” Porath says. “If you think about the last few years, Covid in particular, contributed to this, but plenty of other stressors, the uncertainty…a lot of negativity that we’re taking in in society, a lot of people angrier or on edge or frustrated.” What is rude?“Rude,” of course, can mean many things to as many people. Some may not bat an eye when students leave class unannounced, others see it as a breach of the social code. But, as Post notes, your definition of what’s “rude” is shaped by personal experience and preference. According to Post, you might label an action as rude if it has offended, disrespected, or made you uncomfortable. Jennifer Loh, a management and human resources professor at the University of Canberra in Australia, classifies “rude” as an action, behavior, or comment meant to convey disrespect that also violates a social norm. When you expect to be treated one way and others fail to meet that standard, you might consider it impolite. These breaches can be direct or indirect, says Amy Irwin, a senior lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen. Overly critiquing a friend’s performance at an open mic may be construed as directly rude. Staring at your phone while someone attempts to converse with you is a passive form of incivility. There’s also an element of ambiguity at play, Irwin says, since you never really know if a colleague purposely ignored you when you greeted them (rude) or if they simply didn’t see you (can be forgiven). But is it rude?Lizzie Post, the co-president of the Emily Post Institute, offers some clarity on oft-devisive behaviors. Is it rude to talk on the phone in public? “On a speaker phone? Yes. If you have a captive audience, in a space someone can’t get away from, elevators, small rooms, a waiting room, these are spaces where you really shouldn’t be on the phone at all.” Is it rude to text someone late at night? “No. We have control over our devices to decide when we’re going to allow notifications to bother us or not, that means it’s on us to put those in place. Given time zones, I wouldn’t begrudge someone. But think about your audience.” Is it rude to email a professor on the weekend? “No, but you shouldn’t expect a response.” Is it rude to smack while eating? “Yes.” Is it rude to ask for a plus one to a wedding? “Yes.” Is it rude to recline on a plane? “It’s rude to recline for the entire flight.” But everyone’s idea of what is normal, acceptable behavior differs. People learn what is kosher from those around them: parents, extended family, friends, culture writ large, Post says. You may have grown up in a family where eating in front of the TV was customary, but your romantic partner might find the idea horrifying. While age often gets blamed for rudeness — the classic “kids these days” knock — generational differences in incivility can be attributed to the culture in which you grew up. Younger people who grew up alongside technology may find it appropriate to scroll TikTok in social settings. Those who were exposed to tech later in life could be offended by even the presence of a phone in a one-on-one hangout. In a study of Australian millennials, Gen Xers and boomers, Loh found younger participants consider it good manners to respond to a text immediately. “Whereas for the older generation,” she says, “not responding straight away doesn’t seem to worry them too much because they don’t think it’s actually rude.” Your present social context also plays a role in whether you consider an act rude, Irwin notes. Burping loudly in a bar is more widely accepted than burping in the middle of a meeting. “You can take exactly the same behavior,” she says, “put it in a different context, and it’s viewed completely differently by the same person.” And the closer you are to the offender, the more likely you are to excuse their behavior, anyway. More broadly, each culture has its own social niceties, so while it might be acceptable for you to scarf down a snack while walking on the street in the US, you might get a few confused glances in Japan. Breaking the cycle of rudenessWhen instances of impropriety abound, Post says it’s crucial to be aware of the behavior you’re modeling, both to peers and the kids in your life, and explain why courtesy is so important — that it isn’t just to police others’ behavior, but to provide a framework of respect. “Taking the time when you’re at the dinner table to talk about why we don’t chew with our mouth wide open,” she says. Leaders at work, coaches, and teachers can set expectations for what behavior is appropriate for the office, the field, the classroom, and hold people accountable, Porath says. Reflect on how you interact with others: Are you constantly on your phone at the dinner table? Do you cut off colleagues in meetings? Do you leave your shopping cart in the middle of the grocery store parking lot? How do you speak to waiters and other service workers? If there were recent moments where you fell short — maybe you were a little terse with a barista — consider where you went wrong, Post says. Moving forward, try to be more mindful of the impact you have on others. It can help to start noticing polite behaviors all around you: The guy at the doctor’s office who held the door open for another patient; someone appropriately covering their mouth when they sneeze in public. They’re not as few and far between as you might think. “It’s important to recognize that the positive can have such a big impact,” Post says. “Looking for the good moments of behavior that you see out in the world, starts to remind you that they’re there, that you can participate in too.” View the full article
View the full article
