In front, there are titanium-painted front grille inserts and red tow hooks to match the red Nissan emblem. An off-road skid plate with a titanium-painted finish provides a tougher look and additional underbody protection. Along the sides, there is special R badging on the fenders. The upgraded wheels—with a titanium finish and R center caps—are sensibly sized for off-roading at 17 inches, and these are wrapped in all-terrain tires. It gets a Roush performance x Öhlins two-inch suspension lift, boosting ground clearance. Off-road shocks with remote reservoirs have also been fitted. These aluminum shocks have external gas reservoirs, 18 mm steel shafts, and rear cooling fins, which assist with maintaining damping over rough surfaces. Off-road front upper control arms are also equipped, which increase travel and improve suspension geometry. Combined, Roush claims that these changes not only make for a better off-roader, but improve the Nissan’s ride quality, too. No changes were mentioned for the 3.8-liter V6 engine, and it’s here where the Frontier loses out to the Ranger Raptor. The Nissan produces 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, but the Ranger Raptor’s turbocharged V6 generates 405 hp and 430 lb-ft, so the Ford is comfortably more powerful. A Sportier Interior, TooInside, the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X R gets upgraded seats with the R logo embroidered into the front seat headrests. Orange stitching finds its way onto the seats, center armrest, and doors, which contrasts nicely with the black leather upholstery. No other interior changes were mentioned, so we expect the same seven-inch drive-assist display and 12.3-inch touchscreen as found in the standard Pro-4X. Whereas the Pro-4X starts from $41,870, the Pro-4X R has an MSRP of $47,960, so it’s easily the most expensive Frontier you can buy. That seems reasonable for all the add-ons, though, and it’s still a lot cheaper than the Ranger Raptor, which begins at $56,070. A closer alternative to the Frontier Pro-4X R is the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, which starts at $49,600. Like the Nissan, this Chevy gets a suspension lift and a special suspension. In this case, it has DSSV Multimatic suspension dampers. The ZR2 gets a 310-horsepower engine, matching the Nissan, but the Chevy's turbo means it has a much healthy 430 lb-ft. Then again, a lot of buyers will prefer the Frontier's simpler V6. We found the normal Frontier Pro-4X to be equally capable off-road as it is on a road trip, so the Pro-4X R improves on what is already a solid and underrated midsizer. The Nissan Leaf is entering its third generation, and the 2026 model will start at $31,485. Despite getting a considerable overhaul, the third-gen Leaf's new price keeps it less expensive than it was when the model first launched in 2011. The redesigned Leaf will begin arriving at dealerships later this fall, with Nissan planning to announce pricing and details on the entry-level S trim later. After two generations of awkward styling and meager range figures, the Nissan Leaf is being ushered into its third generation with the 2026 model year. Despite huge improvements in both the styling and performance departments, the pricing on the Leaf doesn't change much, with the S+ trim carrying a starting price tag of $31,485. NissanIn fact, while the 2026 model is slightly more expensive than the entry trim for the 2025 model (at $29,280), it's still cheaper than the Leaf was when it debuted in 2011. The S+, along with the two trims above it, is equipped with a 75-kWh battery and a single 214-hp electric motor driving the front wheels. Russia launched a major attack overnight on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with President Trump and European leaders on Monday at the White House. Several dozen drones targeted the nation’s gas transmission system, causing widespread fires, according to the Ministry of Energy. “The enemy continues systematic terrorist attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which is a direct violation of international humanitarian law. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed skepticism in a Monday interview that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be willing to make peace as President Trump’s pushes to end the war in Ukraine that has lasted more than three years. FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear took emergency action Monday to ban the sale of “designer Xanax,” responding to a request from his state's attorney general who is leading a broader effort to combat the highly potent synthetic drug linked to dozens of overdose deaths last year in the Bluegrass State. Beshear's action in his state comes as a coalition of 21 attorneys general, led by Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman, is urging the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to take emergency action banning the unregulated drug. It poses a growing public health threat and is increasingly contributing to overdose deaths, the attorneys general said in a letter dated Monday to DEA Administrator Terry Cole. “Law enforcement desperately needs the tools to drive this dangerous drug from our neighborhoods,” Coleman, a Republican, said in a news release. In Kentucky, the classification of bromazolam — widely known as “designer Xanax” — as a Schedule 1 controlled substance took immediate effect following Beshear's emergency regulation. Bromazolam, Coleman has warned, is being passed off as prescription pills including benzodiazepines, which are commonly used to treat conditions such as anxiety disorders, insomnia, and seizures. He had urged Beshear's administration to ban the drug in Kentucky, and the governor's action on Monday empowers law enforcement to make arrests for selling or possessing the drug, Beshear's office said. “This deadly drug has no place in our communities, and now we have the tools needed to get it off the streets and protect more lives,” the Democratic governor said in a release. Beshear, a former Kentucky attorney general now in his second term as governor, is widely seen as a potential candidate for president in 2028. It is highly potent and unpredictable, they said, especially when combined with opioids or other central nervous system depressants. Unlike regulated medications, illicitly manufactured bromazolam lacks quality controls, making it particularly lethal for unsuspecting users, they said. “Despite its clear dangers, bromazolam remains unscheduled at the federal level, creating significant challenges for law enforcement and public health officials trying to respond to this emerging crisis,” the letter said. “Without scheduling, this drug continues to evade traditional regulatory and prosecutorial tools, hindering interdiction efforts and enabling continued distribution through illicit channels.” Emergency action by the DEA would help law enforcement remove the drug from circulation, give prosecutors the ability to hold traffickers accountable and would “send a clear signal that this dangerous substance has no place on our streets,” the letter said. Here’s what you’ll learn when you read this story: Archaeological excavations on an Orkney island in Scotland revealed a Viking-era find. The carved red sandstone head features intricate detailing across the entire face. The discovery may have a link to St. Magnus Cathedral, Britain’s northernmost cathedral. Beneath the 18th-century Skaill Farm in Scotland’s Orkney archipelago sits a medieval Viking-era settlement. That settlement just revealed a face from the past. During a dig on the Orkeny island of Rousay, a graduate student from the University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute removed a section of ancient construction to uncover a piece of sandstone. The stone stared right back, exposing a finely carved head of red sandstone with yellow inclusions, likely quarried from the island of Eday. “This is such an exciting find,” Sarah Jane Gibbon, co-director of the Skaill archaeological dig for the Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology, said in a statement. “Over the years excavating at Skaiil and The Wirk—the nearby hall tower—we have found several interesting molded pieces of red sandstone but nothing like this.” The piece could be more than 900 years old, tied to the Norse settlement that sits below much of the 18th-century farm. Once owned by Sigurd of Westness, a prominent Viking chieftain from the 12th century, the site features medieval buildings. For instance, in 2019, the research center discovered a Norse drinking hall (the Skaill name comes from the Old Norse word meaning “hall”). During the recent dig, crews were excavating a two-story rectangular building with three-foot-wide walls, built in a similar style to a square building on the site that the team believes was contemporary to the late medieval farm. The newly discovered building could have been a large storehouse for the ancient farm. As excavation removed the internal floors, student Katie Joss found the sandstone face. “We were removing a slab when the head came rolling out at us, and as we turned it around we saw a face looking back at us,” Joss told BBC. “It was really exciting.” Gibbon said the carving looks like it was meant to be seen from the front, at a slight angle to show the front part of the top of the head “which has beautifully carved locks of hair.” The eyes appear closed, and the face features a slight smile with asymmetric eyebrows to “express real character.” The only damage on the face is a broken nose, and Gibbon wondered if it was deliberate or accidental. The sandstone matches molded fragments from nearby St. Mary’s old parish church, but the team has struggled to find any similarities to the design. The only parallel found in size and form was from nearby Kirkwall’s St. Magnus Cathedral—the northernmost cathedral in Britain and built by the Earl of Rognvald, a friend of Sigurd of Westness. At the Kirkwall cathedral, the team located a window frame on the south side featuring a carved face with a curl of hair like the one found at Skaill. Decisions to ban books and censor LGBTQ+ content in schools aren't made organically — and they won't be reversed on their own, either. Keep up with the latest in LGBTQ+ news and politics. Far-right groups have mobilized throughout the past several years to infiltrate school boards, limiting discussions of race and LGBTQ+ identities, banning pride flags, requiring staff to out students to families, and imposing other restrictions on how transgender students can freely express themselves. As organizations like Moms For Liberty or the Heritage Foundation continue to prop up candidates that impose their will on curriculum, it's time that LGBTQ+-affirming groups do the same. To counter conservative takeovers, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program and the School Board Integrity Project have compiled a new resource guide to help LGBTQ+ students, their parents, and their allies get involved at their local school boards. School Boards Matter: A Guide to Effectively Advocating at the School Board Level contains information aimed at helping readers understand how school boards operate, including how to understand meeting schedules, follow local policies, and develop talking points. "Many people simply don’t realize how powerful school boards are," Deputy Director of Welcoming Schools, Rebby Kern, tells The Advocate. "These elected officials decide what students learn, what books they can access, whether LGBTQ+ students are protected or targeted, and how safe and inclusive a school environment is. Yet, because these elections often fly under the radar, people underestimate their impact." Most school board elections are determined by just 5 to 10 percent of eligible voters, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Kern says this is primarily because "school board structures and timelines can feel confusing or inaccessible," as many are held during off-year or off-cycle elections, and "unlike federal or even state-level elections, school board races often receive little press." This is how conservative organizations have been able to weaponize school boards for their cause. Beyond supporting candidates financially or through endorsements, the groups routinely mobilize their supporters to attend meetings and draw attention to topics they've deemed controversial. Many of these attendees do not have children in public school, nor do they live in the districts where they complain. "Far-right groups have strategically focused on school boards as an entry point to push national culture war agendas," Kern explains. "They use fear-based narratives around 'parental rights,' trans athletes, restrooms, and race to stir up moral panic, painting inclusive education as dangerous or inappropriate. These groups aren’t just showing up to board meetings — they’re recruiting candidates, funding campaigns, and coaching people to run with clear ideological objectives: restrict LGBTQ+ curriculum, limit discussions of race and gender, and remove books that affirm diverse identities." We are equipping parents, educators, and community members with the tools they need to navigate these systems and organize effectively. Es principios de mayo en la ciudad de Uberaba, en el sureste de Brasil, en el corazón del interior agropecuario del país. Unas 400.000 personas y casi 2.500 cabezas de ganado se reunieron allí para una vibrante celebración de la cultura ganadera de Brasil. Se trata de ExpoZebu, una feria anual dedicada a la "supervaca" cebú, una raza de ganado genéticamente avanzada que es apreciada por su carne y que domina la producción ganadera de Brasil, un país que exportó 2,9 millones de toneladas de carne vacuna en 2024. ¿Podrían estas supervacas brasileñas alimentar al mundo? La solución fue recurrir al ganado cebú, que estaba floreciendo en ese momento en India y era mucho más adecuado para los pastizales tropicales de Brasil. "El cebú era mucho más resistente a las altas temperaturas, enfermedades y plagas que otros animales europeos. Y también estaba acostumbrado a un suministro menos abundante de pasto", señala Broughton. "Los cebúes se adaptaron mejor a los trópicos debido a sus patas más largas y su metabolismo más lento, lo que significaba que podían conservar energía de manera mucho más efectiva. A su vez, tenían pestañas mucho más largas, que los protegían contra el sol intenso y el polvo", continúa. A fines del siglo XIX, Brasil registró importaciones masivas de cebú. "Entre 1893 y 1914 se importaron más de 2.000 cabezas de cebúes de India con fines de reproducción. Como resultado, a principios del siglo XX, el cebú se convirtió en el tipo dominante de ganado en Brasil, y crearon su propia raza nacional conocida como induzebu o indubrasil", explica el historiador. "Los científicos de Embrapa trabajaron muy de cerca con los ganaderos con el fin de expandir la producción introduciendo nuevos tipos de pastos de África, que eran más resistentes al calor. También desarrollaron curas para las enfermedades que afectaban al ganado y trabajaron en cambiar la acidez del suelo para incrementar la producción de soja, fuente importante de alimento animal. Como resultado, la frontera ganadera brasileña se movió más hacia el norte, a nuevas regiones como la cuenca del Amazonas", explica. Una mayor importancia de la carne en la economía de Brasil les dio a los ganaderos una enorme influencia sobre cómo se administraba el país. "En este período surge una nueva fuerza política que se conoce como BBB -bala, buey y Biblia-, una coalición conservadora en el Congreso favorable a los agronegocios, las armas y los grupos cristianos evangélicos. Es una fuerza muy poderosa en Brasil hoy en día. Fueron fundamentales en la destitución de la presidenta Dilma Rousseff en 2016 y están estrechamente aliados con el expresidente Jair Bolsonaro, quien apoyó una mayor expansión de la agroindustria en Brasil", apunta Broughton. Carne asada"Nuestros productores han hecho un trabajo notable mejorando la genética de estos animales. Tenemos las mejores razas de cebú del mundo", asegura Cassio Brauner, profesor asociado del Departamento de Ciencia Animal de la Universidad Federal de Pelotas en Brasil. Dice que el programa de mejora ha permitido que Brasil se convierta en el primer exportador mundial de carne vacuna, y el mercado sigue en ascenso por la demanda china. [Getty Images]"Tenemos este sistema de producción de bajo costo porque nuestra industria cárnica se basa en pasto, que es muy barato, y la mano de obra es muy competitiva frente a otros países como EE.UU.", agrega. Ese bajo costo también significa que los propios brasileños están comiendo más carne. "Una tradición en la mayoría de nuestros estados es el domingo de barbacoa. Los domingos no se trabaja, la gente está en sus casas, y la barbacoa es el plan especial para reunir a la familia", cuenta. Y lo que muchos brasileños comen en esos domingos de barbacoa es un corte de deliciosa carne veteada que proviene de la joroba característica del cebú llamado cupim. El alto costo climáticoUn mayor crecimiento se avizora desde que el país fue declarado libre de fiebre aftosa en junio. Pero hay una desventaja en todo esto: la ganadería contribuye significativamente al cambio climático. "El impacto ambiental ocurre a través de dos vías. Las vacas en su tracto digestivo producen metano, un poderoso gas de efecto invernadero que contribuye al calentamiento del planeta. Es 80 veces más potente que el CO2 en su efecto invernadero a corto plazo, aunque a largo plazo el metano se disipa. El efecto indirecto es a través del cambio de uso de la tierra. Las vacas necesitan pastar y, para crear espacio, en Brasil a menudo es necesario destruir el bosque natural", asegura Marcos Barozzo, profesor asistente de Economía en la Universidad DePaul en Chicago, EE.UU. Y la expansión hacia el norte significa que gran parte de ese bosque natural está en la Amazonía. La deforestación también reduce la cantidad de dióxido de carbono que absorben los árboles de la Amazonía. Y el proceso de deforestación continúa a medida que los ganaderos crean nuevos pastizales para alimentar a su ganado. El dato positivo es que la rápida tasa de crecimiento del cebú implica que generan menos metano y consumen menos pasto por kilo de carne producida. "Las supervacas cebúes pueden ganar mucho peso con relativa rapidez y, al vivir menos, se puede producir más carne en un período más corto, con menos emisiones directas y menor uso de la tierra", argumenta. Alguien podría preguntarse por qué no trasladar la producción al sur de Brasil. Al fin y al cabo, Argentina se las arregla sin la Amazonía. Los cebúes tienen un ciclo de vida más corto, por lo que generan menores emisiones de gases invernadero. [Getty Images]"Ahí es donde entra la política. Intente convencer a un ganadero en un estado de la Amazonía de que no debería dedicarse a la ganadería en absoluto. A pesar de que esta actividad en la Amazonía es notablemente improductiva, sigue siendo una de las pocas, si no la única, fuentes de ganancias y de ingresos fiscales para los gobiernos", señala. Volviendo a la pregunta: ¿pueden las supervacas de Brasil alimentar al mundo? Ciertamente se está intentando. Es posible que no todos comamos carne de cebú brasileña en el futuro, pero se podría aprovechar esa genética. A medida que las temperaturas continúan aumentando en el mundo y las condiciones para el ganado se vuelven más duras, es probable que más y más países opten por seguir el ejemplo de Brasil, con la importación de ganado cebú propio. "Creo que las supervacas ayudarán.
