El gasto de bolsillo en salud creció, de manera considerable, en el último sexenio, con lo cual los hogares de menores ingresos fueron los más vulnerables y afectados, de acuerdo con un análisis de la organización México Evalúa. Con datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares (ENIGH) 2024, el gasto de bolsillo en salud –que se entiende como aquel que los hogares mexicanos realizan para atender cualquier cuestión médica–, creció 41% entre el 2018 y el 2024. De esta manera, mientras que en el 2018 los hogares destinaron 1,135 pesos al trimestre para atender su salud, el año pasado el monto aumentó a 1,605 pesos al trimestre. El análisis de la organización civil mostró que, mientras que los hogares del decil I, que son los de menores ingresos, destinaron 3.9% de su ingreso total al gasto en salud en el 2024, los hogares del decil X, que son los de mayor ingreso, destinaron sólo 2.1 por ciento. PUBLICIDAD“Esto evidencia un patrón regresivo, donde los hogares en situación de pobreza destinan proporcionalmente más a su atención médica”, señaló la organización. Ante esto, México Evalúa recomendó que se presupueste el gasto público en salud de acuerdo con la cantidad de población que se busca atender y las enfermedades a tratar para mantener la calidad de la cobertura, y blindarla del manejo discrecional de los recursos disponibles, así como igualar el presupuesto y la calidad de los servicios para las personas con o sin seguridad social. “Con el fin de materializar el acceso a la salud, se debe garantizar un paquete de prestaciones básicas y universales en esta materia para toda la población. Este paquete podrá ser reclamado en cualquier sistema de salud público e incluso en el sector privado”, agregó. Asimismo, recomendó establecer un plan de infraestructura en salud y fortalecer el monitoreo, evaluación y transparencia. Medicamentos y desabastoEn el caso del gasto en medicamentos, entre el 2018 y el 2024 se multiplicó, al pasar de 222 pesos al trimestre a 480 pesos, es decir, un crecimiento de 116 por ciento. PUBLICIDADDe esta manera, el gasto en medicamentos pasó de representar 19% del gasto total de salud de los hogares en el 2018 a 30% el año pasado. “Buena parte del incremento en el gasto de medicamentos se debe a su desabasto en hospitales públicos. Vale la pena mencionar que, a partir del 2018, el suministro de medicinas en instituciones públicas cambió significativamente. Con el objetivo de abaratar costos, en el 2019 se eliminó a los distribuidores intermediarios y la compra se centralizó en la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP) y Salud. La estrategia no funcionó. Desde entonces, se han impulsado proyectos para solucionar el problema”, destacó la organización. Además del desabasto, otro motivo por el cual el gasto en medicamentos creció es que más pacientes optan por no buscar atención médica y automedicarse. Así, 16 millones de mexicanos y mexicanas se autorecetaron en el 2024. “Esta tendencia también refleja el mal desempeño del sistema de salud público, pues las personas recurren a la automedicación cuando los tiempos para recibir atención son muy extensos, no hay clínicas cercanas a su domicilio, tienen poca confianza en las instituciones de salud o porque saben que no hay medicamentos en los hospitales públicos”. La organización civil indicó que los hogares destinan cada vez más recursos a combatir los padecimientos más graves en el país: el principal desembolso es para comprar medicamentos contra la presión arterial, seguido de antibióticos para infecciones y fármacos para la diabetes. PUBLICIDAD“Entre el 2018 y el 2024, estos tres rubros registraron aumentos reales de 242.3, 37.1 y 261% respectivamente. Esto refleja el peso creciente que la enfermedad y la falta de acceso efectivo a tratamientos imponen sobre la economía familiar”. En total, el año pasado se detectaron 44.5 millones de personas que dijeron carecer de acceso a servicios de la salud, lo cual representa a 34.2% de la población mexicana. La cifra reportada el año pasado es 11.7% menor a la que se observó en el 2022, cuando 50.4 millones de personas reportaron no tener acceso a servicios de salud; sin embargo, representa un incremento de 121% respecto al 2018, cuando se reportaron 20.1 millones de personas. La Unión Africana, la organización que reúne a todos los Estados africanos, se unió este lunes a una campaña para que se deje de utilizar la proyección de Mercator para los mapamundis. La campaña, denominada Correct The Map ("Corrijan el mapa"), busca evitar que los gobiernos, las organizaciones, las escuelas y las empresas representen en sus mapas al continente africano más pequeño de lo que realmente es. "Podría parecer que es solo un mapa, pero realmente no lo es", le dijo a la agencia Reuters la vicepresidenta de la Comisión de la Unión Africana, Selma Malika Haddadi. La proyección de Mercator, inventada en el siglo XVI por el cartógrafo europeo Gerardus Mercator, muestra más grandes los territorios más cercanos a los polos, como Norteamérica y Europa, con respecto a aquellos que se ubican cerca de la línea del Ecuador, como África y Sudamérica. PUBLICIDADEsta fue la solución que Mercator encontró a un problema matemático: representar en una superficie plana un planeta esférico. La campaña Correct The Map promueve adoptar una proyección que se conoce como Equal Earth, que refleja con mayor precisión el tamaño de los continentes. Los mapamundis que siguen la proyección de Mercator son los que usan por defecto aplicaciones como Google Maps, y son posiblemente los que más han configurado nuestra imagen mental del planeta. "Durante más de 450 años, hemos basado nuestra comprensión de África y del mundo en un mapa que es erróneo", se lee en el sitio web de Correct The Map. El movimiento defiende que la distorsión en el tamaño de los continentes en el mapa se trata de un problema de "poder y percepción". La directora ejecutiva de Africa No Filter, una de las organizaciones detrás de la campaña, ha calificado la proyección de Mercator como "la mayor campaña de desinformación". [BBC][BBC]Un problema matemáticoResulta matemáticamente imposible proyectar de manera exacta una superficie curva como la de la Tierra sobre una plana, como un papel o una pantalla. PUBLICIDADPor eso, todos los planos de la superficie terrestre están necesariamente distorsionados. Dependiendo de la técnica que se utilice para crearlos, el tamaño, la forma y la ubicación de los continentes cambia. Los cartógrafos desde hace siglos son conscientes de ese problema y lo solucionan según el uso que le quieran dar al mapa. Mercator hizo su famosa proyección, que se convirtió en la más popular de la historia, pensando en una necesidad específica: la navegación. Y consiguió que, usando su mapamundi, un navegante supiera en qué dirección debía ir según la brújula para llegar de un punto a otro. El problema que tiene la proyección de Mercator es que exagera el tamaño de los países a medida que estos se alejan de la línea del Ecuador. Esto ocurre porque es una proyección cilíndrica, que presenta los meridianos como líneas paralelas equidistantes. Khi đến gần, anh nhận ra đó là cá thể bò biển Dugong – loài thú biển quý hiếm thường được gọi là “nàng tiên cá”. Theo anh Lâm, con vật lúc này đã rất yếu, không thể tự bơi trở lại biển. Anh đã cố gắng tìm cách cứu hộ nhưng không thành công, đồng thời nhanh chóng báo cho Ban Quản lý Vườn quốc gia Côn Đảo và các cơ quan chức năng. Do cá thể Dugong có trọng lượng lớn, lực lượng chức năng phải huy động 8-10 người để đưa xác con vật lên xe chuyên dụng và di chuyển vào bờ. Tại Việt Nam, Dugong hiện chỉ được ghi nhận tại vùng biển Côn Đảo và Phú Quốc. Công tác tuyên truyền trước, trong và sau đại hội cần được chú trọng, bảo đảm đại hội là đợt sinh hoạt chính trị của địa phương sâu rộng trong toàn bộ hệ thống chính trị và tạo không khí phấn khởi trong nhân dân. For all the talk of a new, lasting multiracial coalition that helped elect Donald Trump, there are clues that this support may be wavering, particularly among Latino voters. Polls show the president’s approval rating with this group has plummeted since the last election, and a third of Latinos who voted for him say they are unlikely to back a Republican candidate in the next one. This collapse happened for a few reasons. Latino voters are not only souring on the president generally, but also on his handling of key issues like immigration and the economy — the very topics that boosted his support with them initially. And curiously, this decline in support for the president isn’t translating into a surge for Democrats. Instead, many Latino voters express dissatisfaction with both parties. This shifting dynamic suggests that both parties have been operating on flawed assumptions over the last few years. Democrats made the mistake of treating Latinos as a monolithic group, focusing on social justice issues while failing to address economic concerns that were pushing these voters toward the GOP. Now, Republicans may be poised to make a similar mistake. They have largely viewed these voters as Republicans-in-waiting, banking on a rightward drift that they assume extends to the most extreme parts of the conservative social agenda. This approach risks alienating a large segment of the Latino electorate. Ultimately, both parties are learning a crucial lesson: Demographics aren’t destiny, and they need a more nuanced understanding of this diverse and rapidly changing group of voters. The Democrats’ shrinking Latino majorityOver the last decade, Trump has remade the American electorate with the help of Latino voters. Back in 2016, his highly racialized and polarizing election victory resulted in one of the worst performances with Latino voters in modern history, winning fewer than three in 10 Hispanic and Latino voters, well below average for Republican candidates. But splits began to develop among Latino communities in the US over the next few years. Working class, non-college educated, and male Latinos, as well as those from Florida and the Southwest, began to drift away from Democrats, particularly at the national level. They were more intrigued by Republican pitches centered around the economy, small business growth, and affordability. At the same time, Democrats were hesitant to admit they had an issue with the Latino population, quibbling over messaging and campaign investments while missing the plot. By the time of the 2020 election, Trump had managed to not just recover his party’s losses in 2016, but expand on them, shrinking the Democratic advantage with Latinos by nearly 20 points. Democrats, it turns out, misread Latino voters’ priorities and beliefs, gradually losing support from the peak they had from 2012 to 2016 (when Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton enjoyed 40-point margins). The party largely approached Latinos as “voters of color,” marginalized minorities who could be mobilized through appeals to identity, immigrant solidarity, and social justice. For some time, this worked, but Latinos weren’t behaving like a monolithic group. Instead, Latinos would fracture and become more dissimilar during this time, with various kinds of evangelicals, border residents, naturalized immigrants, and working class Latinos remaining or becoming more conservative as the Democratic Party and its white, college-educated base became more progressive. Particularly on issues like crime, immigration and the border, and gender roles and identity, the liberal positions that Democrats took — or were portrayed to take — were out of step with the views of many conservative and moderate Latinos from 2020 to 2024. In 2021, the Pew Research Center found that the most liberal, educated, and politically engaged Democrats exerted outsized influence on their party. By the 2024 election, this created an opening for Republicans, as Latino voters expressed greater openness to Trump and the GOP’s stances on the economy, immigration, and abortion. By then, their votes had begun to follow some of their beliefs. Republican gains came quicklyAs Democrats stumbled, Republicans stuck to a different approach: treating Latinos as a new kind of white voter. They doubled down on a hawkish and xenophobic immigration message that seemed to resonate with a large minority of Latinos, spoke of the border as an issue of crime and public safety, and talked nonstop about prices and affordability to exploit the lack of trust in Democrats’ stewardship of the economy. Republicans sought to make the old Reagan line that, “Hispanics are conservatives, [but] they just don’t know it yet,” come true by hammering home the idea that Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party were too radical and out of touch. This approach worked. Latinos concerned with immigration and the economy shifted to Republicans, and Trump posted a double-digit boost in support among Latinos, shrinking the Democratic advantage another 20 points. Continued Latino support is not a givenAn array of data suggest that this advantage is looking more short-lived, largely because Republicans aren’t taking into account the nuances of Latino voters. The GOP still did not win a majority of Latinos last year — and much of the boost was from disaffected Democrats or more moderate, disengaged Latinos who don’t have the same strong ideological leanings as the primarily white MAGA base. Latino voters are rapidly changing, existing as both a racial minority and an assimilating, formerly immigrant generation. The most recent evidence for this divergence comes from two research projects undertaken by the Democratic-aligned Equis Research group. In the spring, they tracked growing dissatisfaction among Latino voters with Trump’s handling of the economy, cost of living, and immigration. Even among what Equis calls “Biden defectors,” those former Democrats who switched to supporting Trump in 2024, a slight majority were beginning to turn on Trump’s economic policies. This dynamic extended to immigration, where an overwhelming majority of all Latino voters thought the administration’s actions were “going too far and targeting the types of immigrants who strengthen our nation.” Some 36 percent of Trump-voting Latinos said the same thing, and a majority of Biden defectors, some 64 percent, felt the same way. This suggests some degree of remaining immigrant solidarity among these swingier, evolving segments of the Latino electorate and disapproval over how mass deportations and aggressive anti-immigrant policies will affect law-abiding immigrants and their families. Nearly two-thirds of Latinos in Equis’ polling believe that the Trump administration’s actions “will make it difficult for hardworking Latinos to feel safe, by increasing racial profiling and harassing all Latinos regardless of immigration status.” In other words, there is a limit to what various kinds of Latino voters are willing to stomach. The same dynamic is becoming more clear with regards to the economy, where Latino voters, and new Trump voters specifically, are unhappy with the state of the economy. Biden defectors, Equis finds, are net negative on Trump’s economic policies: -6 percent of support in May and -8 percent in July. Whether this dynamic not only hurts the GOP but also helps Democrats is unclear. Although many Latino voters still believe Republicans favor the wealthy over the working class, this long-standing sentiment is no longer pushing them toward the Democratic Party. Instead, they increasingly distrust both parties on this question. But together, these signs suggest that the GOP is going too far with their policy and ideological mission in Trump’s second term, turning off the new converts they won to their coalition over the last 10 years. Where the parties go from hereThe two major parties are making errors with Latino voters. Both have to moderate their policy and ideological approaches while bringing more nuance to how they campaign. Latinos do have some things that bind them together, and they are not just like white voters who can ignore discrimination and scapegoating and uprooting of their extended community’s lives (as immigration enforcement is showing). At the same time, they need to be talked to with more nuance. Democrats tried to do this in 2024, moderating on immigration, dropping the usage of the term “Latinx,” and investing in hyper-specific, hyper-local campaigning with various kinds of Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans, and others. But there was only so much campaigning they could do when facing a wave of anti-Biden, anti-incumbent electoral sentiment. Republicans, meanwhile, toned down immigration talk and zeroed in on subgroups of the Latino electorate in battleground states in 2020. They appealed to religious and ideological conservatives — Cuban, South American, and Puerto Rican communities in Florida, as well as border communities in Arizona, Nevada, and Texas. Some of this nuanced campaigning did carry over to 2024, but it focused more on young and male Latinos in general. And 2024 saw a return to a kind of dog-whistle, racialized, and anti-immigrant scapegoating, which helped the anti-incumbent tide. One of the biggest green flags when you’re old-car shopping is a good service history. And as a car owner, efficiently keeping track of maintenance is the best way to stay on top of it. That was part of the inspiration for Manila, a free browser-based application you can use to track your car projects, great and small. Manila is the brainchild of Matt Schwartz, whom I met through The Motoring Club in LA circa 2017. We’ve kept in touch by liking each other’s wrenching pics on Instagram and chatting at events when I’m back west. He made a post about his new service record tracking program earlier in the summer, and I finally got him on the horn to learn more about it last week. The way it works is this: You make a file for each vehicle you want to track, then simply start adding notes about what you did to it and when. Critically, there are fields to enter part numbers, tags, pictures, and video, which you can use to save your future self time when you need to revisit a task. It’s searchable, too, making it far superior to the endless email threads and Notes app entries you might have about your car’s various issues. It also gives you room to just make more abstract notes, like, “X mileage, Y date, noticed leak at valve cover.” Stuff like that, that’s a little more narrative than a simple record of what you bought and when. For example, Schwartz showed me an entry in his own account for when he swapped the starter on his BMW 2002. He had to make a weird and specific ratchet extension to access a bolt, and so he just logged a picture of that along with the part numbers, date, and odometer reading. In his words: “I maintain all of my cars myself. I take tons of photos and videos, documenting everything from oil changes to unexpected issues, because I want a clear picture of my car’s journey. But the reality? That story ends up scattered across my phone. I’m constantly digging for a photo, forgetting when something was done, or wondering if I’m overdue for something important. That’s why I built Manila, an app that makes it easy to tell your car’s story. It organizes photos, service logs, and reminders in one clean timeline. It’s simple, visual, and designed for people who want to keep their cars in ‘ready to go anywhere’ condition … So yes, Manila is a maintenance tracker. But it’s more than that. It’s about preserving the stories, and making sure those stories are easier to read.” Here’s the current state of my driveway. I don’t think any app will ever cure my messiness in the physical realm. Andrew P. CollinsIn addition to having some experience in the auto-shop software world, inspiration for Manila came from a few places. One, Schwartz was telling me about how he kept noticing how many Bring a Trailer auction listings included pictures of stacks of papers as evidence of service history. “That’s great to see, but I kept thinking, ‘Is that really the best way to keep track of all this stuff in 2025?'” he told me. Secondly, like many of us, Schwartz was always struggling with the knowledge management of his three project cars, losing track of what was done when and getting frustrated searching multiple apps on his phone to find things. Finally, he got validation from a classic car mechanic at Fast Cars Ltd. in Redondo Beach. Schwartz was telling me he described a version of his app idea to a younger tech there during a chance encounter, and the mechanic was all about the idea. “Once I started getting obsessed with the Manila concept, I started realizing how badly I needed it for myself,” Schwartz said. Manila is not really meant for commercial garage use in its current form. But now, having messed with it a little myself, it does do a good job bridging the gap between a spreadsheet-style data log and a diary. And that’s really what you need to do when you’re dealing with old, quirky cars. Here’s what the “enter your task” screen looks like. ManilaIt’s great to simply save your receipts and keep them all in a folder, but it’s far better to have detailed journal entries to look back on with annotations, tags, pictures, and video. Manila gives you a place to consolidate both your personal notes on your project and the specifics you need to substantiate what work’s been done. In the near future, Schwartz is hoping to add customizable reminders (like, “email me when I’m due for an oil change”) and a way to create public links for service records that obscure costs. With that functionality, as a seller, I could simply drop that link to prospective buyers to let them review everything I’ve done to a car. Further down the line, he wants to look at adding a personal inventory management system. That might only appeal to the super nerds, but I know I could use it. I’ve got boxes and boxes of parts that go to the nine different vehicles I’m managing, and I re-buy filters and things I already have by accident all the time. ManilaThere are more features in the pipeline that could make Manila more useful, too, but Schwartz’s main goal for now is to build the user base and then figure out revenue. He’s looking at tie-ins with parts vendors and auction sites as ways to potentially get paid from the app. Since Manila lives in a web browser, you can use it with pretty much any mobile device. Schwartz told me he’s going to stick with that system (as opposed to making an iOS or Android app) for portability, cost, and ease of data entry. “If you want to go back and add old records for a project you’ve already had, it’s so much easier to do on a computer than a phone,” he explained. As the caretaker of nine different vehicles myself, all of which are old and ailing, I’m always struggling with information management. When did I do an oil change on this one? How old is the brake fluid in that one? It’s exhausting. Even if you only have one or two cars, remembering every service, relevant parts, and recording both for yourself and potential future buyers gets arduous if you don’t stay on top of it. More importantly, as impressive as a huge stack of receipts looks, it’s tough to find any one specific data point in it. Manila could be hugely helpful in addressing that exact problem. I’m still going to be keeping all my receipts in big binders dedicated to each car, but now I’m going to start logging info in Manila and, hopefully, be able to reference it a lot more easily. President Donald Trump on Tuesday pledged that American troops would not be on the ground in Ukraine — but provided little other insight into the scale of U.S. security guarantees as he pushes to end Russia’s war on its neighbor. “You have my assurance, and I’m president,” Trump said on “Fox & Friends,” when asked what assurances he has that there won’t be American boots in the country to defend against another Russian incursion. There is room for U.S. military involvement that doesn’t require American troops in Ukraine, including air or drone support or non-combat roles. In fact, a senior administration official, granted anonymity to discuss private conversations, told POLITICO on Monday that there isn’t a red line on a U.S. role, adding that the U.S. could participate in a peacekeeping force if it is the last piece required for a deal. Well, not good, but it was all the typical entry-level buyer could hope for in the Malaise Era. The Grabber was an actual model of the Maverick. An ad on the dashboard of Dane Riggo's car shows high school students gathered around a Grabber with the words, "Ideal for the driver with a little sport in mind." There are cheerleaders in the ad. It also promised, "Plenty of visual clout." "No two ways about it, the Grabber looks like fun," the ad said. But was it really fun?
