President Donald Trump escalated his campaign to purge cultural institutions of materials that conflict with his political directives on Tuesday, alleging museums were too focused on highlighting negative aspects of American history, including “how bad slavery was.” In a Truth Social post, Trump directed his attorneys to conduct a review of museums, comparing the effort to his crackdown on universities across the country. “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future,” Trump wrote. Trump’s comments come days after the White House announced an unprecedented, sweeping review of the Smithsonian Institution, which runs the nation’s major public museums. The initiative, a trio of top Trump aides wrote in a letter to Smithsonian Institution secretary Lonnie Bunch III last week, “aims to ensure alignment with the President’s directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.” The letter said the review would focus on public-facing content, the curatorial process to understand how work is selected for exhibits, current and future exhibition planning, the use of existing materials and collections and guidelines for narrative standards. Exhibits at the Smithsonian take years of planning and are heavily evaluated by teams of scholars and curatorial experts before they make their debut. Janet Marstine, a museum ethics expert, said that the demands laid out by the Trump administration “set the Smithsonian up for failure.” “Nobody could provide those kinds of materials in such a comprehensive way, in that short amount of time, and so it’s just an impossible task,” she said. The White House has asked the Smithsonian to provide an array of materials, from internal emails and memos to digital copies of all placards and gallery labels currently on display. The Smithsonian declined to comment on Trump’s latest remarks. A White House official, asked about the attorney review process Trump described, said the president “will explore all options and avenues to get the Woke out of the Smithsonian and hold them accountable.” Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order that put Vice President JD Vance, who serves on the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents, in charge of stopping government spending on exhibits that don’t align with the administration’s agenda. He also tasked a former member of his legal team, attorney Lindsey Halligan, with helping to root out “improper ideology” at the Smithsonian. “Museums in our Nation’s capital should be places where individuals go to learn — not to be subjected to divisive narratives,” the executive order said. The Smithsonian began a review of its own in June, and has repeatedly stressed its commitment to being nonpartisan. A Texas state House Democrat said she was threatened with arrest after an officer assigned to follow her lost track of her on a walking trail. Texas state Rep. Sheryl Cole (D) said Tuesday in a post on social platform X that an escort from the Texas Department of Public Safety — who she said “was forced upon” her to track her “every movement” — lost track of her on the trail, became angry and “made a scene” in front of her constituents. “While a little shaken up from the incident, I remain undeterred by this intimidation tactic by House Republicans to have a 24/7 state police presence to intimidate me and my colleagues,” Cole said. Cole’s account of the incident comes as fellow Democratic state Rep. Nicole Collier has chosen to stay on the floor of the state House chamber for more than 24 hours rather than have a law enforcement officer shadow her. After the state House Democrats returned to the Lone Star State on Monday, ending their two-week out-of-state stint to prevent Republicans from passing a new congressional map in a redistricting effort, state Speaker Dustin Burrows (R) declared that those who came back would have an officer with them to ensure they didn’t leave the state again. Around the country, President Donald Trump is circumventing the Senate to install top federal prosecutors, using loopholes to keep loyalists in place. In U.S. attorney’s offices in Los Angeles, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico and upstate New York, the administration has effectively sidestepped or overridden both the Senate confirmation and judicial appointment processes for selecting U.S. attorneys. When Trump’s nominees can’t get confirmed by the Senate, as required by federal law, the administration installs them on a temporary basis as “interim” U.S. attorneys, who are legally allowed to serve for 120 days. And when district judges have then rejected Trump’s choices by exercising a 160-year-old power allowing them to appoint someone to the office after an interim U.S. attorney’s term ends, the administration has in a few cases taken an extraordinary step: voiding the judges’ decision and reinstalling Trump’s desired prosecutor as an “acting” U.S. attorney, who can serve for an additional 210 days beyond the initial 120-day interim period. In two instances, the Trump administration preempted the judges’ votes, appointing the interim U.S. attorneys as acting U.S. attorneys before the judges could have their say. And in at least one district, the administration’s attempt to sidestep the Senate and district judges is being challenged in court. Though the law doesn’t explicitly forbid the Trump administration’s approach of appointing people to successive temporary stints, “the intent [of the law] was always for Senate confirmation,” said Jennifer Selin, a professor at Arizona State University law school. “The Trump administration has been very strategic in using the law in this particular way,” Selin said. A spokesperson for the Justice Department didn’t respond to a request for comment. The nation’s 93 U.S. attorneys are the top federal law enforcement officials in their geographic districts. While they are nominated by the president, the Justice Department has historically sought to insulate them from political influence. And the president’s selections are expected to have the blessing of another branch of government — either the Senate or the courts. Carl Tobias, a University of Richmond law school professor, said the workarounds are alarming because they eliminate the vetting process conducted by the Senate, calling it “a perversion of what the Constitution seems to require.” Critics worry that the lack of oversight on some of Trump’s picks could create a perception — if not a reality — that those prosecutors are simply doing the White House’s bidding and using their offices for political purposes. For instance, Trump’s pick in New Jersey, Alina Habba, has been criticized for prosecuting a Democratic member of Congress who was attempting to conduct an oversight visit at an immigration detention center. Trump’s strategy of overriding the other branches could also create tension between U.S. attorney’s offices and the district courts in which they operate. “Senatorial influence over selection has really been a critical aspect of the U.S. attorney's system, and so has the relationship between the U.S. attorney and local institutions like the district court bench, local governments and local communities,” said Daniel Richman, a Columbia Law School professor and former federal prosecutor. “And when you start ramming people down into these offices without any consideration of local communities, and in particular of the district court bench, bad things happen.” Richman pointed to a recent ruling in Manhattan denying the DOJ’s effort to unseal secret materials in the cases of Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein as an example of “judges looking askance at an effort by Washington to circumvent the district.” “District judges really care about the integrity, and, to some extent, the autonomy of the U.S. attorney's offices that appear before them,” he said. “They, like any actor, like to help shape the quality of justice that's done in their courtroom, and they do that not just through their rulings, but through the influence they have on the U.S. attorney's offices. And U.S. attorney's offices that have any desire to be effective tend to their relationship with the local bench.” Maintaining a loyalist in New JerseyThe most dramatic fight over a U.S. attorney post in the second Trump administration has been in New Jersey, where earlier this year Trump picked Habba, one of his former personal defense attorneys and a vocal supporter, to serve as U.S. attorney on an interim basis while also nominating her to take the job permanently. Habba, who had never worked as a prosecutor, is a controversial figure who opened a number of politically charged cases in her first few months on the job. Her office charged Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) with assaulting federal agents after she clashed with immigration officials while attempting to visit an immigration detention center; she is seeking to get the case dismissed. Habba’s office also arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a Democrat, but later dropped the case. And shortly after Habba took office, she opened an investigation into Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, over the state’s immigration policies. It quickly became clear that Habba could not win Senate confirmation. So when her term as interim U.S. attorney was about to expire last month, district judges in New Jersey voted to determine who should occupy the post indefinitely until the Senate could confirm someone to the job. The judges declined to keep Habba in office, voting instead to install longtime career prosecutor Desiree Leigh Grace. But Trump quickly bypassed that selection, reinstalling Habba on a longer-term but still temporary basis as acting U.S. attorney. He did so by having the Justice Department fire Grace while simultaneously withdrawing Habba’s nomination in the Senate. The withdrawal was important because nominees for a full-time U.S. attorney post generally cannot also serve in an “acting” capacity, per federal law. But once Habba was no longer a nominee before the Senate, the Trump administration argued, she could remain in the job for another 210 days, or about seven months. What will happen after that remains unclear. Trump’s workaround to keep Habba in the job for now is contested. A defendant in a drug and gun case in New Jersey is arguing that the administration’s maneuvering was irregular and unconstitutional and is challenging Habba’s authority. Habba’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment. Workarounds in New York and New MexicoSlightly different scenarios have played out in other U.S. attorney’s offices. In the Northern District of New York, which covers Albany and Buffalo, Trump’s interim choice for the job was John Sarcone III, a Republican lawyer who has run for office unsuccessfully several times and, like Habba, had no apparent prosecutorial experience. Sarcone had a tumultuous start to his tenure that included listing his address on a police affidavit as a location that was actually a boarded-up building. When Sarcone’s 120-day interim period expired, the district judges in northern New York declined to appoint him to continue in the job. But unlike in New Jersey, the judges did not select a substitute — they simply didn’t appoint anyone. The Justice Department responded by giving Sarcone an appointment of “special attorney” with an “indefinite” term so that he could return to the job. The office didn’t respond to a request for comment. A similar sequence occurred in New Mexico last week. The district judges in the state declined to extendTrump’s pick for interim U.S. attorney, Ryan Ellison. So the Justice Department converted him to the “acting” head of the office under a federal vacancies law. As with Habba, that maneuver allows Trump to chain together the 120-day interim period and the 210-day acting period — potentially allowing the non-confirmed official to remain on the job for nearly a full year. New Mexico’s Democratic senators, Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, said the decision exemplified “this administration’s continuing willingness to trample the role of the Judiciary and Congress.” Ellison embraced the move, saying in a statement: “I applaud New Mexico’s federal district judges for declining to appoint someone other than the Trump Administration’s choice to lead the United States Attorney’s Office as they had the discretion to do at the end of my interim appointment.” He added that “the appointment of a U.S. Attorney is a process that should be sorted out in a collaborative and professional manner between the executive and legislative branches of government.” In one powerful district — the Southern District of New York, which is based in Manhattan — Trump’s interim U.S. attorney pick did not run into resistance from judges. On Monday, the judges there voted to retain Trump’s choice, former Securities and Exchange Commission chair Jay Clayton. The vote allows Clayton to continue running the office indefinitely, even though Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) blocked Clayton’s confirmation in the Senate. Getting around judges in California and NevadaIn the Central District of California, which is based in Los Angeles, Trump’s interim choice was Bill Essayli, a Republican who had been serving in the California State Assembly. In his early months on the job, Essayli drew scrutiny for reportedly pushing prosecutors to bring cases desired by the Trump administration but unsupported by sufficient evidence. As his interim period was coming to an end, the Trump administration converted Essayli’s title from interim to acting. It’s not clear if the district’s judges ever held a vote on the post. The court didn’t provide an answer when asked about it. A spokesperson for Essayli’s office declined to comment. And the administration deployed the same tactic in Nevada to keep in place Sigal Chattah. In the final days of her temporary tenure as interim U.S. attorney, a group of more than 100 retired federal and state judges wrote to the chief federal district judge in Nevada to object to voting to install Chattah after her appointment expired. The group said her history of “racially charged, violence-tinged, and inflammatory public statements” disqualified her. Instead of waiting for the judicial vote, the Trump administration simply made her the acting U.S. attorney. The office didn’t respond to a request for comment. Future risksWhile Trump may be getting his way on U.S. attorney choices for now, the strategy may ultimately come back to haunt him. Retired U.S. District Judge John S. Martin predicted that the practical effect of the maneuvers is that a U.S. attorney who is installed over the objections of the local bench will lose credibility with the judges, not necessarily because of any actions they take, but simply by virtue of the process. That may jeopardize cases in court for prosecutors, Martin said, because it “means that when the government comes in and asserts something a little bit unusual, it's going to get a very skeptical view from the court.” View the full article

Republicans are hoping that giving President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” a new name will make voters stop hating the president’s signature legislation and allow the GOP to keep control of Congress. Recent polls from CNN, CBS, and Fox News found the spending bill—which Republicans narrowly passed in July—has a net favorability rating of -19 percent to -22 percent, making it one of the most unpopular pieces of legislation ever to become law, CNN’s polling guru Harry Enten said earlier this month. Republican lawmakers who have tried to sell the bill to their constituents during in-person town halls have been met with furious voters who booed, jeered and even hurled NSFW insults at their representatives. In response, the White House is trying to adopt a more concrete message that will appeal to a wider audience, NBC News reported. President Trump demanded that House Speaker Mike Johnson include all of the White House's legislative priorities—including tax cuts and mass deportation funding—in GOP strategists have advised lawmakers to pick a new name with some phrases that poll well, such as the “Working Family Tax Cuts” act or even the “Trump Working Family Tax Cuts,” according to NBC. The name is justified, Republicans say, because the spending bill eliminates taxes on tips and overtime. The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, however, found the legislation was regressive overall, with most of the benefits going to high-income households. Those earning $460,000 to $1.1 million will see their after-tax incomes rise by more than 4 percent, while households making less than $35,000 will receive just a 1 percent increase, which will be offset by higher health insurance and food costs. The bill cut about $1 trillion from Medicaid and is projected to add $3.4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next 10 years, which will in turn trigger more than $490 billion in additional Medicare cuts, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. An estimated 10 million people will lose health insurance as a result of the legislation, according to the CBO. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning the public about possibly radioactive shrimp being sold at Walmart locations. On Tuesday morning, the FDA advised Walmart customers in a press release not to “eat, sell, or serve certain imported frozen shrimp” from an Indonesian distributor, BMS Foods, due to possible contamination with the radioactive isotope, Cesium-137. U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected Cesium-137, also known as Cs-137, in shipping containers at four ports in the United States. The FDA tested a sample of frozen shrimp from Indonesia’s BMS Foods, which came back positive for Cs-137. No shrimp that has tested positive for Cs-137 has entered the U.S. food supply, per the FDA. The following Great Value brand frozen shrimp products have been recalled and should not be consumed or served: Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, best by date: March 15, 2027 Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, best by date: March 15, 2027 Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, best by date: March 15, 2027 The frozen shrimp product, per the FDA’s press release, appears to have been “prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern.” For customers who’ve recently purchased any of the affected frozen shrimp products as described above, the FDA recommends that they be thrown out immediately. “Distributors and retailers should dispose of this product and should not sell or serve this product,” the FDA warned. The FDA has also added Indonesia’s BMS Foods to a new import alert for chemical contamination. Sustainability can be a tough ask for manufacturers building a machine for a single purpose, but Formula 1's bosses are pushing constructors to save the world while going as fast as possible. In 2019, Formula 1 set a target to become carbon net zero by 2030, and the technicians across its teams and suppliers had already achieved half that goal by the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, with a 26 percent decline in carbon emissions. The goal of being net zero carbon is not just in the design, development, and manufacturing of Formula 1 cars, but also in logistics, operations, and travel. While becoming carbon net zero could benefit the Formula 1 brand -- which many detractors see as a waste of resources and a rich man's sport -- the technology used by teams could, as is often the case, eventually trickle down to the road cars we drive. For instance, beginning in 2026 all Formula 1 cars will run on an advanced sustainable fuel blend coupled with the new hybrid engine that will debut next year, technology that can be easily transferable to road cars. Former Red Bull boss Christian Horner also believed that the switch to such a fuel could pave the way to bring back V10 engines in F1, an idea which was ultimately rejected. Formula 1's feeder series, F2 and F3, have successfully run the aforementioned fuels, while former F1 driver Sebastian Vettel has been a strong supporter of it. It may be a while before Formula 1 drivers share an airplane rather than fly solo on their private jets after a scrap on Sunday, but the sport seems intent on doing its part through investment in sustainable aviation fuel technology. They believe that the environmentally-friendly fuel has reduced travel emissions by at least 19 percent, and is a technology that could eventually make its way into the wider aviation industry. While cars around the world adopted ethanol-blended fuels decades ago, Formula 1 was late to the party, only switching to E10 in 2022. However, Formula 1 is making progress in using HVO100 biofuel for its long-haul trucks that are used during the European leg of the calendar. The hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel, already commonly used in trucks in some parts of Europe, is gaining prominence, and its use in F1's trucks has resulted in an 83 percent reduction in carbon emissions. Pirelli's FSC, or Forest Stewardship Council, certified tires promote the "responsible procurement" of rubber and ensure a lower ecological footprint. The tires, which have been in use in Formula 1 since the 2024 season, are also recycled into secondary raw materials after they are driven to their limits by Verstappen and company. These FSC-certified tires will soon be introduced in Jaguar Land Rover cars, with Pirelli and JLR announcing earlier this year that new Range Rover models will sport specially made Pirelli P Zero tires that are FSC-certified. Initially, only vehicles with 22-inch wheels will have the tires, before they are introduced to other models in the range. The P Zero tires are made using recyclable materials, with Pirelli claiming that 70 percent of each tire is composed of recycled content. However, the Range Rover won't be the first car with Pirelli's FSC-certified tires, as BMW's X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid first sported it back in 2021. BRABUS launches the Rocket GTC “Deep Red” hybrid convertible: 1,000 hp, red carbon body, 0–62 in 2.6 seconds, built to order.BRABUS introduced a new flagship open-top model Friday during Monterey Car Week, debuting the Rocket GTC “Deep Red,” a coachbuilt, all-wheel-drive hybrid convertible clad entirely in red exposed-structure carbon fiber and rated at 1,000 horsepower. Positioned by the German tuner as a “Hyper Gran Turismo Convertible,” the 2+2-seater combines a BRABUS Rocket 1000 4.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 with a rear-axle electric motor for a quoted system output of 735 kW (1,000 hp). The company lists system torque at 1,820 Nm (1,342 lb-ft), electronically capped at 1,620 Nm (1,195 lb-ft) to protect driveline components. BRABUS cites 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.6 seconds, 0–200 km/h (124 mph) in 9.5 seconds, and 0–300 km/h (186 mph) in 23.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 317 km/h (197 mph). The hybrid module pairs a 150-kW (204-hp) synchronous motor with a two-speed gearbox and a 6.1-kWh lithium-ion battery; the powertrain is calibrated to meet Euro 6d-ISC-FCM emissions standards, the company said. Developed in the wind tunnel and produced in-house, the Rocket GTC’s carbon fiber body panels are finished with a transparent red coating and detailed for cooling and downforce. A deep front splitter, enlarged intakes and sculpted side sills feed air to radiators and brakes, while a full-width ducktail rear spoiler and integrated diffuser stabilize the car at speed. Four titanium tailpipes, illuminated in red, exit through the rear valance; active valves allow switching between a subdued “Coming Home” mode and a louder V-8 soundtrack. Two food influencers who were sitting inside a restaurant in Houston, Texas were hit by an SUV as it crashed through the window. The crazy accident was caught on camera as Nina Santiago and Patrick Blackwood were trying out salmon sliders in front of a food-laden table when the vehicle suddenly bursts through. Financial influencer shows his bare ignorance about cars. Those influencers had set up a shoot to try out food at Cuvee Culinary Creations on August 17 when a mishap sent the SUV flying into the building, pushing both people out of their seats as broken glass flew everywhere. Both posted photos on Instagram of them in the hospital with cuts to their faces. However, they escaped serious injury. Quite frankly, they’re lucky to be alive. We’ve covered other accidents where cars have crashed into buildings, some of them with tragic outcomes. Thankfully, this didn’t turn out that way. The driver was apparently headed to the restaurant for a private event when something happened that she can’t recall, reports TMZ. We don’t know if that means she suffered a medical episode or was distracted and doesn’t want to admit to such a thing. However, authorities threw out the possibility of impairment as a cause. We know from covering accidents like this they’re often a result of drivers mixing up the accelerator and brake pedals. Everyone wants to claim they don’t do it, but in a panic some do and the results can be catastrophic. This is why driving should command your full attention.
