A military court sentenced a New Zealand soldier on Wednesday to two years' detention for attempted espionage for a foreign power. The soldier, whose name has been suppressed, admitted to attempted espionage, accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose and knowingly possessing an objectionable publication. The court martial at Linton Military Camp near Palmerston North heard the soldier gave military base maps and photographs to an undercover officer posing as an agent for the foreign nation. During the investigation he was found to have copies of a livestreamed video of the March 2019 killing of 51 worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch by white supremacist Brenton Tarrant. The soldier became a person of interest in the aftermath of the Christchurch attack as police cracked down on right-wing extremist groups, of which he was a member, the court heard. While monitoring him, the New Zealand government became aware he had "made contact with a third party, indicating that he was a soldier who was wanting to defect", according to an agreed summary read out by the prosecution. The military court has permanently suppressed the identity of the foreign nation. It was the first spying conviction in New Zealand's history. The soldier was arrested in December 2019, and had spent all but six days since then under what the New Zealand Defence Force called open arrest. He was required to live on an army base in a military house, and was subject to a curfew. The soldier was suspended on full pay, earning more than US$230,000 (NZ$400,000) since his arrest. During that time he married his wife and had two children. His wife is expecting a third child. bes/djw/sft/tym View the full article

View the full article

The White House joined TikTok on Tuesday with a video montage of President Donald Trump. The US government previously voted to ban TikTok over national security concerns. TikTok faces a divest-or-ban deadline next month, though it's been extended several times this year. A lot can change in a year — just ask TikTok. Last year, the US government took the extraordinary step of voting to ban the popular app used by millions of Americans, citing national security concerns. On Tuesday, the White House became its latest user. The White House TikTok account launched with a video montage of President Donald Trump narrated by the man himself. "Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation," Trump says over images of him with UFC head Dana White, law enforcement officers, and American workers. "I am your voice!" The account's second post featured various shots of the White House during different seasons. The White House joined the app less than a month before it's set to be banned in the US on September 17 unless it's sold to a US buyer, though that deadline has already been extended several times. "The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible," Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, said in a statement to Business Insider. "President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before." The White House did not respond to questions about whether the divest-or-ban deadline would be extended again or if a deal was expected by the deadline. Lawmakers in April 2024 voted to ban TikTok unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold its American assets. Some officials cited concerns that sensitive data belonging to American users could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, and members of Congress have said it could be used for Chinese Communist Party propaganda. TikTok has said it does not share data with the Chinese government. The TikTok divest-or-ban law, signed by President Joe Biden last year, gave TikTok until January 19 to sell or risk shutting down. The app briefly went dark that day for US-based users before coming back online, with TikTok crediting Trump for its return. The White House has said the president does not want TikTok to go dark and prefers it be sold. Trump has delayed the divest-or-ban deadline three times since taking office in January. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC last month that TikTok will go dark again unless China agrees to a deal that will give Americans control over the app. "We've made the decision. You can't have Chinese control and have something on 100 million American phones," Lutnick said, adding that China's decision would be coming "very soon." TikTok and ByteDance did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Read the original article on Business Insider View the full article

Graham Platner, a Marine and Army veteran, said he’s angered by how unlivable the northeasternmost US state has become for working-class people. A US military veteran and oyster farmer on Tuesday launched a bid to unseat Republican US Senator Susan Collins in Maine, as his party fights an uphill battle to try to recapture control of the chamber in next year's midterm elections. Democrat Graham Platner, a Marine and Army veteran, said he’s angered by how unlivable the northeasternmost US state has become for working-class people, blaming billionaires and corrupt politicians for hurting middle-class families and pushing others into poverty. “I’m not afraid to name an enemy,” Platner said in a two-minute, 20-second launch video posted to X. “And yeah, that means politicians like Susan Collins. I’m not fooled by this fake charade of Collins’ deliberation and moderation.” Platner’s campaign pits him against Jordan Wood, former chief of staff to former US Representative Katie Porter of California, and comes as Democrats hope to recruit Maine Governor Janet Mills to challenge Collins. Two other high-profile Democrats, former Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio and former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper recently launched Senate bids in their states. (credit: REUTERS/ELIZABETH FRANTZ)Who is Susan Collins?Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority, and are defending only two seats widely viewed as competitive by nonpartisan election analysts - Maine and North Carolina. That means that Democrats would have to defend all their seats and also secure wins in more deeply Republican states, such as Ohio or Iowa, to secure a majority. Collins has a reputation as a centrist who occasionally bucks her party on key votes, including voting no on President Donald Trump's sweeping tax-cut and spending package nicknamed the One Big Beautiful Bill. She raised more than $2.4 million for her reelection in the most recent fundraising quarter and entered July with $3.2 million in her campaign account, according to federal campaign finance records. First elected to the Senate in 1996, Collins has won reelection four times, including her 8-point victory over former Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon in 2020. Collins chairs the Appropriations Committee, which has jurisdiction over federal discretionary spending. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won Maine in last November’s presidential election by nearly 7 percentage points. View the full article

Here's a look at a few of the new additions at this year's Minnesota State Faire. It'll have daily prizes and programming around its dark sky certification with NASA solar system ambassador and dark sky specialist Jesse Gates. Artist Adam Turman has expanded his store. It now features more than 200 items, including State Fair art prints. Related: What's new at the Minnesota State Fair in 2025? Activities for kidsIn addition to food and Kidway rides, there are plenty of attractions specifically geared toward a younger audience. Here are a few of the activities worth jotting down if you're traveling to the fair with young children. Each night, weather permitting, a fireworks display will follow the Grandstand show. The time will vary, but the fair says they'll take place at some point between 9 and 10:30 p.m. Don't miss the daily parade, which takes place at 2 p.m. and features the high school marching band competition. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture hosts a daily storytime at 10 a.m. All of its programming, including storytime, takes place in the North Hall of the Agriculture/Horticulture Building at the northeast corner of Underwood Street and Judson Avenue. Kemps Little Farm Hands is a free exhibit for kids (3–10) where they get to play at being a farm hand and take part in the agricultural process. The Voyageurs Conservancy will host the Voyageurs Mobile Classroom with a chance to be sworn in as an official Junior Ranger. It'll also have its "whose scat is that" wildlife game. While most of the stages are focused on live music, there are some live shows for young audiences. That includes lots of dance events at the Summit Stage, and a full lineup of comedy and magic at the Family Fair Stage in Baldwin Park. Journey to Space is new to the Minnesota State Fair in 2025.Minnesota State FairExpress buses, parking lots, and ride servicesFor those using public transportation to get to the fair, there are a host of options. NEED TO KNOWKyle Chrisley and his wife, Ashleigh, filed a lawsuit against Rutherford County and two sheriff deputies for $1.7 million over his aggravated assault arrest in September 2024 “Our hopes for this lawsuit are accountability and change because no family should have to endure what the Chrisley family endured in this terrifying scenario,” his attorney said in a statement to PEOPLE The arrest comes nearly three months after Kyle’s parents, Todd and Julie Chrisley, were pardoned by President Donald Trump Kyle Chrisley and his wife, Ashleigh, are suing Rutherford County and two sheriff deputies for nearly $2 million over his September 2024 aggravated assault arrest. In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the attorneys for the Chrisley Knows Best star, 33, and his wife claim he was unfairly arrested and “punished for calling for help.” “Our hopes for this lawsuit are accountability and change because no family should have to endure what the Chrisley family endured in this terrifying scenario,” Kyle’s lawyer, Wesley Clark of Brazil Clark, PLLC, said in a statement to PEOPLE. Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department Kyle Chrisley's mugshotThe lawsuit alleges on Sept. 9, 2024, that “a disgruntled mechanic, angry over a payment dispute, showed up uninvited, kicked at their doors, threatened violence, and used his car as a weapon by ramming their SUV and nearly running Kyle over in front of multiple neighbors.” Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff “didn’t arrest the man who caused the chaos,” the lawsuit claims. “Instead, they arrested Kyle Chrisley, and ignored clear evidence that he was the victim, not the aggressor.” Authorities allegedly “disregarded eyewitnesses, overlooked available video footage, and ignored Tennessee’s self-defense law.” The filing claims that Kyle and Ashleigh “bring this lawsuit because no family should face criminal charges or threats of arrest for defending themselves at home or for exercising their constitutional rights. This is a case about false arrest, excessive force, and retaliation for trying to hold police officers accountable. Amid a physical altercation with the mechanic, Kyle allegedly “shoved back in self-defense and the two men pushed each other out of the garage and down the driveway,” the lawsuit states. The filing indicates that Kyle did not “brandish or use a knife” at any point amid the disagreement. Ashleigh called 911 after the mechanic allegedly “intentionally reversed into [her] parked SUV, smashing and damaging her vehicle” and “performed two 360-degree spins while flinging topsoil into the air, and sped away toward the neighborhood exit,” the lawsuit states. When authorities arrived at the family’s home, they allegedly informed Kyle that the mechanic claimed he “stabbed him with a knife,” which Kyle denied. A neighbor claimed they didn’t see a knife. Despite alleged evidence against the mechanic, Kyle was arrested for aggravated assault, the lawsuit claims. The sheriffs “threw Chrisley to the ground, placed knees on his back, and handcuffed him despite the fact that Chrisley used no force against the officers and did not otherwise resist.” The lawsuit alleges the sheriffs “recognized” Kyle as “a member of the Chrisley family, who are widely known from the reality television series Chrisley Knows Best and associated public controversies.”The filing claims that the sheriffs “appeared eager to arrest Chrisley, treating the encounter as an opportunity to make headlines by arresting a well-known figure.” Kyle’s arrest was allegedly “motivated in part by animus toward [Kyle] based on his notoriety, past public controversies, or perceived privilege, rather than on the facts or law surrounding” the incident. “The false arrest and excessive force violated Chrisley's Fourth Amendment rights, causing physical injury, emotional distress, and deprivation of liberty,” the lawsuit claims. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office does not comment on lawsuits. The lawsuit states that Kyle suffered humiliation and damage to public reputation, pain and suffering, mental suffering and emotional distress, and economic losses due to the arrest. Attorneys are requesting a jury trial and $1.7 million in damages in addition to attorney fees. The criminal case against Kyle is still pending. They immediately began appealing their case, and while Todd’s appeal was upheld, Julie's was initially granted due to insufficient evidence. However, a judge later ruled that her original punishment was sufficient. Read the original article on People View the full article

Nebraska Republican Gov. Jim Pillen announced plans Tuesday for an immigration detention center in a farming area in the state's southwest corner as President Trump's administration races to expand the infrastructure necessary for increasing deportations. Pillen said he and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had agreed to use an existing minimum security prison work camp in rural McCook to house people awaiting deportation and being held for other immigration proceedings. The new facility was dubbed the "Cornhusker Clink" last week by Rob Jeffreys, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. It can accommodate 200 people with plans to expand to 300. McCook is about 210 miles west of Lincoln, the state capital. "This is about keeping Nebraskans – and Americans across our country – safe," Pillen said in a statement. Pillen announced he would order the Nebraska National Guard to provide administrative and logistical support to Nebraska-based immigration agents. About 20 Guard soldiers will be involved. Emily Pietrzak holds a sign that reads He also said the Nebraska State Patrol would sign an agreement that enables troopers to help federal immigration agents make arrests. DHS said in a news release that the agreement with the state to expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention space was made possible by Mr. Trump's "big, beautiful bill" passed by Congress last month. The funding bill included $45 billion for ICE to expand its detention system, and nearly $30 billion for ICE agents and resources. Jeffreys said the 186 people currently at McCook will be transferred to other state corrections facilities so the camp can be repurposed. The facility will be run by the state of Nebraska but will be paid for by the federal government. All the people expected to be held there will be low to medium-risk detainees, Jeffreys said. Jeffreys estimated it will take 45 to 60 days to relocate all the current McCook population while a prison in Lincoln is undergoing repairs from recent storm damage. It wasn't immediately clear how quickly ICE might start sending detainees to McCook. But Jeffreys said it's already set up to house people, so detainees won't be housed in tents or other temporary quarters. "That facility has already been accredited. It's ready in the event that we are to move our folks out and move detainees in," he said. "Thanks to Governor Pillen for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country," Noem said in a statement Tuesday. "If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Nebraska's Cornhusker Clink. Avoid arrest and self deport now using the CBP Home App." The Nebraska plan has already raised concerns. In a video posted to social media, state Sen. Megan Hunt, an independent, blasted a lack of transparency about plans for a detention center, citing her unfulfilled request to the governor and executive branch for emails and other records about the plan. She urged people to support local immigrant rights groups, and said any response by the Legislature would not come until next year — and only with enough support from lawmakers. "The No. 1 thing we need to do is protect our neighbors, protect the people in our communities who are being targeted by these horrible people, these horrible organizations that are making choices to lock up, detain, disappear our neighbors and families and friends," Hunt said. Six protesters sat in the hallway outside the governor's office Tuesday afternoon making signs that said, "No Nazi Nebraska" and "ICE = Gestapo." Maghie Miller-Jenkins of Lincoln said she doesn't think an ICE detention center is a good idea, adding the state should tackle problems like child hunger and homelessness. "This state has numerous things they could focus on that would benefit the constituents," Miller-Jenkins said. The Trump administration is adding new detention facilities across the country to hold the growing number of immigrants it has arrested and accused of being in the country illegally. Older and newer U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement centers were holding more than 56,000 immigrants in June, the most since 2019. Other new and planned immigration detention facilities in the U.S. include the remote detention center in the Florida Everglades known as "Alligator Alcatraz," which opened last month. It's designed to hold up to 3,000 detainees in temporary tent structures. When Mr. Trump toured it, he suggested it could be a model for future lockups nationwide. When federal officials announced the opening of the Florida detention center, they said its focus would be on rounding up individuals with a criminal record — people that Mr. Trump and border czar Tom Homan have called "the worst of the worst." However, many people who have been locked up there do not have criminal records, CBS News previously reported. The Florida facility has also been the subject of legal challenges by attorneys who allege violations of due process there, including the rights of detainees to meet with their attorneys, limited access to immigration courts and poor living conditions. Critics have been trying to stop further construction and operations until it comes into compliance with federal environmental laws. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced last week that his administration is preparing to open a second facility, dubbed "Deportation Depot," at a state prison in north Florida. It's expected to have 1,300 immigration beds, though that capacity could be expanded to 2,000, state officials said. Also last week, officials in the rural Tennessee town of Mason voted to approve agreements to turn a former prison into an immigration detention facility operated by a private company, despite loud objections from residents and activists during a contentious public meeting. And the Trump administration announced plans earlier this month for a 1,000-bed detention center in Indiana that would be dubbed "Speedway Slammer," prompting a backlash in the Midwestern state that hosts the Indianapolis 500 auto race. A former Miami Heat security guard pleaded guilty Tuesday in Florida to transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce, in connection to the millions of dollars worth of memorabilia he was alleged to have stolen from the team. Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, is a retired 25-year veteran of the Miami police department and was employed by the Heat from 2016 to 2021. He also worked in security for the NBA from 2022 until this year. Per NBC 6 South Florida, his sentencing date has been set for Oct. 31, when he will face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, three years of probation and a fine of up to $250,000. His lawyer reportedly hopes his years in law enforcement will encourage leniency: "He's depressed, naturally, but he accepts responsibility for his behavior and we're gonna work through this issue in his life," defense attorney Robert Buschel said after the hearing. "I hope that the judge will consider all factors in his life and his history as a good person, he was an exemplary police officer in the City of Miami, he's been retired for close to 10 years," Buschel said. "This was an unfortunate set of decisions that he made and he's going to accept responsibility for that." It was during his time working game-day security at the Kaseya Center that Perez was alleged to have stolen hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia from a secured equipment room. The items were kept to be future exhibits at a Heat museum. The third-most expensive jersey ever sold was reportedly stolen from the Heat. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images) (Mike Ehrmann via Getty Images)By the DOJ's count, Perez stole more than 400 jerseys and sold more than 100 of them online, making approximately $1.9 million over a 3 1/2-year period. The most notable garment: a LeBron James jersey worn in the NBA Finals, sold for roughly $100,000 and was later auctioned off at Sotheby's for $3.7 million. That jersey would be the one James wore during the Heat's win in Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals, in which the superstar earned his second title and Finals MVP award. At the time, it was the third-highest price ever received for a game-worn jersey, behind a Michael Jordan jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals ($10.91 million) and Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" jersey ($9.28 million). Law enforcement reportedly executed a search warrant at Perez's home in April and recovered nearly 300 pieces of memorabilia, all of which the the Heat confirmed to have come from their facility. WASHINGTON — Seven European leaders joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday in a rare display of trans-Atlantic unity. The gathering marked the first time in decades that such a broad delegation of allies had assembled at the White House under such pressing circumstances. Shortly after noon, one by one, the heads of state and NATO partners passed the White House gates, where they were met by President Donald Trump’s chief of protocol, and in Zelenskyy’s case, by Trump himself. Some met with Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and other officials that morning. Others made their way to the White House directly from Dulles and other airports. They were there to bolster Zelenskyy after a disastrous White House visit in February, when he clashed with Trump and Vice President JD Vance — and after Trump held a nearly three-hour one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. The show of support for Zelenskyy involved French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who pivoted from their own national agendas to present a united front as Trump seeks an urgent end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump, Zelenskyy and European leaders meeting at the White House. (Win McNamee / Getty Images)The display took place within days of Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska and ahead of a possible Trump-brokered meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy as Trump casts himself as a potential peace broker. Inside the Oval Office on Monday, evoking a boardroom scene, Trump sat behind the Resolute desk, military flags at his back, as Zelenskyy and the European delegation faced him, as reflected in a photo shared by the White House. Made of oak timbers taken from a British ship, the desk is a hulking 19th century reminder of goodwill between important allies, a gift from Britain's Queen Victoria to the United States. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are seen orbiting in the background, along with senior White House staff members. There are few precedents for the gathering, which merged diplomacy with Trump’s usual verve. In 1941, Franklin Roosevelt hosted Winston Churchill off the coast of Newfoundland to sign the Atlantic Charter, laying out the Allied aims for the end of World War II and meetings that would decide the fate of Europe and Asia. During the Cold War, summits in Washington helped decide the terms of German reunification. They included meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev amid a key question over whether Germany would join NATO. And in 1950, the British prime minister rushed to Washington to consult Harry Truman over fears of the possible use of nuclear weapons during the Korean War. “Washington has often been the scene of these great moments of diplomacy. But it was the speed with which this came together that was so striking and sets this apart,” said Marc Selverstone, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs. “Everyone realized this was a crisis moment.” Zelenskyy meets with European allies at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington on Monday. (Ukrainian Presidential Press Service)The urgency was reflected in how quickly the past few days' events came together: Trump’s talks with Putin on Friday were followed by the leaders’ arrival in Washington on Monday morning. “Every single one of them got on a plane 48 hours later and flew to the United States of America,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, rushing to Washington in a bid to keep momentum toward peace in Ukraine alive. The day also offered other made-for-TV moments, as Trump escorted the leaders to a gift shop of sorts, which he dubbed the “Monica Lewinsky room” in reference to a former president’s trysts, where he showed off rows of fire engine red hats emblazoned with his campaign slogans, including one for 2028. At another point, Trump deflected a question to Zelenskyy about Ukraine’s elections to joke about serving a third term himself. Told through photos shared online by his team, Trump presented a towering figure in Monday's meetings. In a picture posted by deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, Zelenskyy stood before a map of Ukraine as Trump looked down at him. Another image posted by the White House showed Trump seated behind his historic desk, this time with Vance and Rubio before him, the phone handset resting on the desk as he talked with Putin. For Zelenskyy, Monday also offered a reset. After a tense Oval Office meeting this year, he struck a more diplomatic tone Monday, offering Trump and others his thanks more than a dozen times, including for the invitation, for Trump’s efforts “to stop killings and stop this war,” for Melania Trump’s letter to Putin asking him to protect children, for a program to purchase American weapons and to the European partners for their support. On his X account, he offered profuse, continued thanks well into Tuesday. Wearing a suit instead of his usual military fatigues, he told Trump as he greeted him that the attire was “the best I had.” “I love it,” Trump said, ultimately sharing a video of the warm exchange on his social media platform, Truth Social. Asked what his message to the people of Ukraine was, Trump told a reporter, “We love them.” Vance, who had publicly clashed with Zelenskyy in their last White House meeting, also sought to smooth relations, posting a photo of their handshake. Finland’s participation carried its own symbolic weight, with one reminder of a path out of a seemingly intractable conflict with a nuclear-powered Soviet Union, which Stubb referred to directly. “We, of course, have our own historical experience with Russia from World War II, the Winter War and the War of Continuation,” Stubb said. “And if I look at the silver lining of where we stand right now, we found a solution in 1944, and I’m sure we’ll be able to find a solution in 2025.” This article was originally published on NBCNews.com View the full article

Texas Democrats are tearing up “permission slips” they signed in order to leave the chamber, joining state representative Nicole Collier ahead of Wednesday’s vote on the controversial Texas congressional redistricting maps. The slips are part of new surveillance protocols set by Texas Republicans in the house chamber, stating that Democrats would “be granted written permission to leave only after agreeing to be released into the custody of a designated [Texas department of public safety] officer” who would ensure their return to the chamber. The move follows a two-week quorum break that had delayed Republicans’ effort to redraw the state’s congressional districts to align with Donald Trump’s push to reshape the US House map in his favor before the 2026 midterm elections. On Tuesday, Collier chose to remain confined inside the Texas house chamber until lawmakers reconvene on Wednesday, refusing to comply with what she condemned as a “demeaning” protocol. Related: Thousands join US ‘Fight the Trump Takeover’ protests against Republican redistricting plans Collier was among dozens of Democrats who left the state for the Democratic havens of California, Illinois, Massachusetts and New York to delay the Republican-controlled legislature’s approval of redrawn congressional districts sought by Trump. When they returned Monday, Republicans insisted that Democrats have around-the-clock police escorts to ensure they wouldn’t leave again and scuttle Wednesday’s planned House vote on a new political map. But Collier wouldn’t sign what Democrats called the “permission slip” needed to leave the house chamber, a half-page form allowing Department of Public Safety troopers to follow them. She spent Monday night and Tuesday on the house floor, where she set up a livestream while her Democratic colleagues outside had plainclothes officers following them to their offices and homes. Linda Garcia, a Dallas-area representative, said she drove three hours home from Austin with an officer following her. When she went grocery shopping, he went down every aisle with her, pretending to shop, she said. As she spoke to the Associated Press by phone, two unmarked cars with officers inside were parked outside her home. “It’s a weird feeling,” she said. “The only way to explain the entire process is: it’s like I’m in a movie.” The trooper assignments, ordered by Dustin Burrows, the Republican house speaker, was another escalation of a redistricting battle that has widened across the country. Trump is pushing GOP state officials to tilt the map for the 2026 midterms more in his favor to preserve the GOP’s slim house majority, and Democrats nationally have rallied around efforts to retaliate. Gene Wu, the house minority leader from Houston, and Vincel Perez, a state representative of El Paso, stayed overnight with Collier, who represents a minority-majority district in Fort Worth. On Tuesday, more Democrats returned to the Capitol to tear up the slips they had signed and stay on the house floor, which has a lounge and restrooms for members. Cassandra Garcia Hernandez, a Dallas-area representative, called their protest a “slumber party for democracy” and said Democrats were holding strategy sessions on the floor. “We are not criminals,” Penny Morales Shaw, a Houston representative, said. Collier said having officers shadow her was an attack on her dignity and an attempt to control her movements. Burrows brushed off Collier’s protest, saying he was focused on important issues, such as providing property tax relief and responding to last month’s deadly floods. His statement Tuesday morning did not mention redistricting and his office did not immediately respond to other Democrats joining Collier. “Rep Collier’s choice to stay and not sign the permission slip is well within her rights under the house rules,” Burrows said. Under those rules, until Wednesday’s scheduled vote, the chamber’s doors are locked, and no member can leave “without the written permission of the speaker”. To do business Wednesday, 100 of 150 House members must be present. The GOP plan is designed to send five additional Republicans from Texas to the US House. Texas Democrats returned to Austin after Democrats in California launched an effort to redraw their state’s districts to take five seats from Republicans. Democrats also said they were returning because they expect to challenge the new maps in court. Republicans issued civil arrest warrants to bring the Democrats back after they left the state 3 August, and Greg Abbott, the Republican governor, asked the state supreme court to oust Wu and several other Democrats from office. The lawmakers also face a fine of $500 for every day they were absent. Democrats reported different levels of monitoring. Armando Walle, a Houston representative, said he wasn’t sure where his police escort was, but there was still a heightened police presence in the Capitol, so he felt he was being monitored closely. Some Democrats said the officers watching them were friendly. But Sheryl Cole, an Austin representative, said in a social media post that when she went on her morning walk Tuesday, the officer following her lost her on the trail, got angry and threatened to arrest her. Garcia said her nine-year-old son was with her as she drove home and each time she looked in the rearview mirror, she could see the officer close behind. He came inside a grocery store where she was shopping with her son. “I would imagine that this is the way it feels when you’re potentially shoplifting and someone is assessing whether you’re going to steal,” she said. Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia asked a federal judge on Tuesday to dismiss a human smuggling case against him, saying the government was prosecuting the Maryland construction worker to punish him for challenging his removal to El Salvador. Their motion filed in court said attempts to dismiss indictments on the grounds of “selective or vindictive prosecution” are infrequent and rarely succeed, “but if there has ever been a case for dismissal on those grounds, this is that case.” The attorneys said senior cabinet members, Justice Department leaders and President Donald Trump mounted unprecedented public attacks on Abrego Garcia and that “vindictiveness is clear from the record.” Acting U.S. Attorney Robert E. McGuire in Tennessee, where Abrego Garcia is in jail, said in an email prosecutors would have no other comment beyond what they file in response to the motion. No prosecutor motion was filed as of late Tuesday. Abrego Garcia became a prominent face in the debate over Trump’s immigration policies following his wrongful expulsion to El Salvador in March. Trump’s administration violated a U.S. immigration judge’s order in 2019 that shields Abrego Garcia from deportation to El Salvador because he likely faces threats of gang violence there. The administration claimed Abrego Garcia was in the MS-13 gang, although he wasn’t charged and has repeatedly denied the allegation. Facing mounting pressure and a U.S. Supreme Court order, the Trump administration returned Abrego Garcia to the U.S. in June to face the smuggling charges, which his attorneys have called “preposterous.” Tuesday's motion alleged the government was trying to paint Abrego Garcia as a criminal to punish him for challenging his removal to El Salvador and to avoid “the embarrassment of accepting responsibility for its unlawful conduct." The motion said the government also aimed to change public opinion about Abrego Garcia's deportation. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys asked the court at least to order a hearing on the government’s motives. The smuggling case stems from a 2022 traffic stop for speeding, during which Abrego Garcia was driving a vehicle with nine passengers. Police in Tennessee suspected human smuggling, but he was allowed to drive on. A federal judge in Maryland last month prohibited the Trump administration from taking Abrego Garcia into immediate immigration custody if he’s released from jail. The judge ordered the government to provide three business days notice if Immigration and Customs Enforcement intends to initiate deportation proceedings against him. View the full article

Michael Jackson did not mince words when giving advice to Donny Osmond back in the day. Both Osmond and Jackson rose to popularity at a young age as part of their respective family bands, before eventually going off to start their own successful solo careers. But Osmond initially found the transition from child star to adult singer difficult, and asked Jackson, who died in 2009 at age 50, for advice as a result. "The name Donny Osmond was a joke, years ago,” Osmond said in a clip shared recently on his Instagram account, which was initially from his 2023 appearance on The Adam Carolla Show. “I mean, if you said you like Donny Osmond music, you were ousted.” “In fact, WPLJ in New York, they got a hold of ‘Soldier of Love’ as an import,” he added, referring to his 1988 single that was initially not released in the U.S. due to his lack of a record deal. “They played the record to test it because they liked the song, but they just didn’t want to say my name.” The singer then explained to Carolla that circa 1983, after the massive success of Jackson's Thriller album, Osmond remembered asking him, "Mike, how do I get back on the charts?” “He said, ‘Your name’s poison, Donny. You gotta change your name,” Osmond recalled, laughing. “It was very offensive,” Osmond said. “It was tough to hear that. But he was right, because in ‘89, radio stations all across the country played my music, but didn’t say my name.” He concluded, “And they did me a favor by not saying who I was, and it became a hit. Then they found out it was me." I mean, you look at the Osmonds and the Jackson 5, the comparisons of the two families are just uncanny," Osmond explained at the time. "There’s nine children in each family. Mike and I are both the seventh child of nine. Our mothers' birthdays are on the same day. Michael and I are the same age." The "One Bad Apple" singer also said that he and Jackson would often get together to “laugh and reminisce” about their similar childhoods and career moves. “Michael said something to me one day,” he recalled. “He said, ‘Donny, you’re the only person on this planet that knows what my childhood was like.’” Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly View the full article

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Jaxson Dart wasn’t sure if head coach Brian Daboll meant it. The New York Giants were playing the New York Jets in their second preseason game, and Russell Wilson was guiding the Giants’ first-team offense. So did Daboll really want his rookie first-rounder to go in the game for a single snap in the middle of a second-quarter series? “He kind of will do things out of the blue a lot, so you don’t really know if he’s dead-ass serious,” Dart told Yahoo Sports. “I was like, ‘Are you serious?’” [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Daboll was. So Dart did. The 25th pick of the 2025 NFL Draft entered the game and immediately hit tight end Theo Johnson in space behind the line of scrimmage for what Johnson turned into a 30-yard gain. Then Wilson went back into the game — all as planned. “You never know when you’re going to have to go in, so just part of the multiple things we’ve done with a young quarterback,” Daboll said. “He’s still got a lot to learn, but he’s growing every day.” At Tuesday’s training camp practice, Dart continued that growth, working primarily behind Wilson but again receiving a handful of snaps with the Giants’ first team. He flipped one pass to tight end Greg Dulcich and hit another (albeit tipped) pass to wide receiver Jordan Bly from about 50 yards out. Wilson scored in red-zone team work first on a pass to Darius Slayton, but Dart wasn’t far behind finding Beaux Collins. This isn’t an open quarterback competition, Wilson firmly in the starting seat. But a room with Wilson, Jameis Winston, Dart and third-year-in-this-system Tommy DeVito leaves the Giants feeling better about their quarterback room than they have recently. The Giants seem adamant that Wilson will be their starter for Week 1 and the foreseeable future, on the bases of Wilson’s considerably deeper experience and an organizational belief in giving a rookie time to acclimate and develop. It’s too soon to know whether that patience will last the entire 2025 season. But the Giants believe Wilson’s leadership, moon ball and operational efficiency will upgrade their offense from last year. They believe Dart will learn from Wilson — and from Winston, whom assistant general manager Brandon Brown praised Tuesday while suggesting trade offers do not interest the Giants. Dart supports that decision. “He’s one of the greatest teammates that I’ve ever had,” Dart said of Winston, who also praised Wilson’s command and discipline. “When I come off the field, I’m able to talk to him and we’re just able to go over the tape and pick through the things that he sees from the defensive side of the ball that’ll help me next time I’m on the field, so that’s super cool. “And [Winston] is the best encourager. I think that’s really special to have and the quality that you really need to have as a quarterback.” On and off the field, Dart allures GiantsWhen the Giants spent about six hours working out Dart in Oxford, Mississippi before his Pro Day, they developed confidence in his arm talent withstanding Northeast weather and wind, and his athleticism catering to a game that increasingly favors mobile quarterbacks. The Giants knew Dart was coming off three starting seasons at Ole Miss (after transferring at USC), his final campaign featuring an SEC-best 4,279 passing yards and 29 touchdowns to six interceptions. Dart’s 10.8 passing yards per attempt and 4,774 yards from scrimmage led the NCAA, as did his 180.7 passer rating and 9.1 yards per play clip. The production was there. But the Giants also saw a leader who could galvanize a locker room. Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen thought back to their last stop, where Josh Allen energized the Buffalo Bills. They saw that potential in Dart, whose “moxie” Daboll trumpets. “He's got a kind of swagger and aura and element to him that he's the everyman,” Brown said Tuesday. “He can connect with the skill guys, to the linemen, to the receivers, to the DBs. And it doesn't matter old, young, or vet. He's got that cool way about him that guys cling to.” The combination convinced the Giants to trade back up to the 25th pick to select Dart after they’d taken outside linebacker Abdul Carter with the third overall pick. And early returns on the decision are encouraging. Many teams are wary of putting too much stock in preseason statistics. But for those who do buy what the preseason is selling, Dart has excelled. In two games, he’s competed 26 of 35 pass attempts for 291 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also picked up 29 yards and a touchdown on five carries. The Giants see a quarterback who’s playing fast, accurately and instinctually. Dart values that the Giants let him lean into those instincts. “It’s really cool to play in an offense where you’ve kind of just been tossed the keys,” Dart said. “I can go out there and change players whenever I want to, and I feel comfortable with that. So I think that’s been really fun. Sometimes you’ll see something defensively in the game and you’re like, ‘I want to get to this,’ and you have the full freedom to do that. “Quarterbacks have the keys to the ship when you’re out there on the field … as a rookie, you don’t get that everywhere.” Dart knows he needs to continue gaining trust, on the field and around Giants headquarters, as he learns from a deep-résuméd quarterback room until it’s his time to carry the ship keys more fully. Until then, he’ll keep leaving himself voicenotes to review on the bus, and he’ll keep joining Winston for late-night yoga sessions as he aims to stay mentally and physically ready. He wants to be ready when his opportunity comes — to play another midseries preseason snap, or to start indefinitely. “Have a lot of confidence in the young man,” Daboll said. “Does he make mistakes? Absolutely, he makes mistakes. He makes a lot of them, I make a lot of them, but you learn together, and for a young quarterback, you grow together. “We’re making mistakes, we’re trying to learn from them, making some good plays, you learn from those. That’s where we’re at. “Early part of a young quarterback’s development.” View the full article

His lawyer reportedly hopes his year in law enforcement will encourage leniency: "He's depressed, naturally, but he accepts responsibility for his behavior and we're gonna work through this issue in his life," defense attorney Robert Buschel said after the hearing. "I hope that the judge will consider all factors in his life and his history as a good person, he was an exemplary police officer in the City of Miami, he's been retired for close to 10 years," Buschel said. "This was an unfortunate set of decisions that he made and he's going to accept responsibility for that." It was during his time working gameday security at the Kaseya Center that Perez was alleged to have stolen hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia from a secured equipment room. The items were kept to be future exhibits at a Heat museum. The third-most expensive jersey ever sold was reportedly stolen from the Heat. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images) (Mike Ehrmann via Getty Images)By the DOJ's count, Perez stole more than 400 jerseys and sold more than 100 of them online, making approximately $1.9 million over a 3 1/2 year period. The most notable garment: a LeBron James jersey worn in the NBA Finals, sold for roughly $100,000 and later auction off at Sotheby's for $3.7 million.
