MELBOURNE, Austalia (AP) — Google has agreed to pay a 55 million Australian dollar ($36 million) fine for signing anticompetitive deals with Australia’s two largest telcos that banned the installation of competing search engines on some smartphones, the U.S. tech giant and Australia’s competition watchdog said. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in a statement it had commenced proceedings in the Australian Federal Court on Monday against the Singapore-based Google Asia Pacific division. The court will decide whether the AU$50 million ($36 million) penalty is appropriate. Under the anticompetitive agreements, which were in place for 15 months until March 2021, Telstra and Optus only pre-installed Google Search on Android phones sold to customers. Other search engines were excluded. In return, the telcos received a share of the revenue Google generated from those customers. Google accepted that the agreements were likely to have the effect of “substantially lessening competition,” the commission said. Google has also signed a court-enforceable undertaking that commits the company to removing certain pre-installation and default search engine restrictions from its contracts with Android phone manufacturers and telcos, the commission said. The tech company said in a statement: “We’re pleased to resolve the ACCC’s concerns, which involved provisions that haven’t been in our commercial agreements for some time.” Commissioner chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb said: "Conduct that restricts competition is illegal in Australia because it usually means less choice, higher costs or worse service for consumers.” “Importantly, these changes come at a time when AI search tools are revolutionising how we search for information, creating new competition,” Cass-Gottlieb added. Deputies were dispatched to Northrup Park for a welfare check. They arrived at the scene at 5:45 p.m. and found an unresponsive Hispanic male. Từ những con phố cổ rợp cờ đỏ sao vàng đến các quảng trường rộng lớn, từ Quảng trường Ba Đình – nơi Bác Hồ đọc Tuyên ngôn Độc lập – đến những con đường rợp bóng cây ở phường Hoàn Kiếm, Cửa Nam, đâu đâu cũng vang vọng không khí tự hào. Việc gắn biển công trình tại 48 Hàng Ngang không chỉ là một nghi thức mang tính biểu tượng, mà còn là cách để lịch sử hồi sinh trong tâm trí mỗi người. Nơi đây, hơn bất kỳ lời nói nào, nhắc nhở thế hệ hôm nay về chặng đường gian nan mà cha ông đã đi qua. Cùng với đó, những “địa chỉ đỏ” như Nhà tù Hỏa Lò, Tượng đài Bắc Sơn, hay những di tích ở Thái Nguyên, Tuyên Quang,… cũng đang trở thành điểm hẹn để mỗi người tìm về, lắng nghe tiếng gọi từ quá khứ, cảm nhận sự hy sinh thầm lặng đã làm nên độc lập hôm nay. Nhắc đến những ngày tháng Tám lịch sử, không thể không nhắc đến Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh. Câu chuyện về Cách mạng Tháng Tám luôn gắn liền với hình ảnh giản dị của Người: bộ kaki bạc màu, đôi dép cao su mộc mạc, cùng phong thái ung dung, quyết đoán của một nhà lãnh đạo lớn. Trong căn gác nhỏ ở 48 Hàng Ngang, với ánh đèn leo lét, Bác Hồ đã viết bản Tuyên ngôn Độc lập – văn kiện bất hủ khai sinh quốc gia Việt Nam mới. Ngày 2/9/1945, trên Quảng trường Ba Đình, giọng nói ấm áp, dõng dạc của Người vang lên: “Tất cả mọi người đều sinh ra có quyền bình đẳng. Tạo hóa cho họ những quyền không ai có thể xâm phạm được; trong những quyền ấy, có quyền được sống, quyền tự do và quyền mưu cầu hạnh phúc”. Những lời ấy không chỉ khẳng định nền độc lập dân tộc, mà còn chạm đến trái tim hàng triệu người Việt Nam và bạn bè quốc tế. Từ mùa thu năm ấy, hình ảnh Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh đã trở thành nguồn cảm hứng bất diệt, thôi thúc các thế hệ Việt Nam không ngừng phấn đấu để xây dựng một đất nước hùng cường. Trong những ngày cả nước kỷ niệm 80 năm Cách mạng Tháng Tám và Quốc khánh 2/9, tri ân là mạch nguồn tình cảm thiêng liêng chảy xuyên suốt trong đời sống dân tộc. Ở khắp nơi, những hoạt động “đền ơn đáp nghĩa” được tổ chức long trọng. Các đoàn đại biểu đến thăm, tặng quà gia đình thương binh, liệt sĩ, Bà mẹ Việt Nam anh hùng. Những nén hương thành kính được thắp lên tại nghĩa trang liệt sĩ Trường Sơn, nghĩa trang Điện Biên, nghĩa trang Hàng Dương trên đảo Côn Đảo. Xúc động biết bao khi chứng kiến các em học sinh, sinh viên – thế hệ trẻ hôm nay tay cầm ngọn nến lung linh trong đêm tri ân. Họ cúi đầu trước những hàng mộ, khẽ đọc tên từng liệt sĩ để thấy gần hơn sự hy sinh thầm lặng của thế hệ đi trước. Các chương trình nghệ thuật ở khắp mọi miền tổ quốc được dàn dựng công phu, làm sống lại những bản hùng ca đã đồng hành cùng dân tộc. Những hoạt động ấy không chỉ là nghi thức, mà là cách xã hội thể hiện lòng biết ơn sâu sắc, để mỗi người thêm trách nhiệm với tương lai. Nhưng tri ân không chỉ để hướng về quá khứ. Nó còn để khơi dậy niềm tự hào ở hiện tại. Những ngày này, cả nước rộn ràng trong không khí hân hoan. Trên các sân khấu lớn, những ca khúc cách mạng, những bản hùng ca dân tộc được khoác áo mới, ngân vang trong giọng ca trẻ trung, đầy nhiệt huyết. Những đêm nhạc “Tổ quốc trong tim”, “Tự hào là người Việt Nam”, “V Concert – Rạng rỡ Việt Nam”, “V Fest – Thanh xuân rực rỡ” đã quy tụ hàng vạn khán giả, trong đó có đông đảo giới trẻ. Họ hòa giọng hát, hòa nhịp tim, để tình yêu nước trở thành sức mạnh lan tỏa. Những giai điệu quen thuộc từ thập kỷ trước nay bừng sáng sức sống mới, khẳng định rằng âm nhạc yêu nước vẫn có sức hấp dẫn mạnh mẽ trong đời sống hôm nay. Đông đảo người dân mặc áo cờ đỏ sao vàng đi bộ mừng Quốc khánh Cùng với âm nhạc, các phong trào thanh niên tình nguyện, khởi nghiệp sáng tạo, đổi mới công nghệ cũng làm dày thêm niềm tự hào. Ở Trường Sa, lá cờ đỏ sao vàng tung bay giữa biển trời, là niềm kiêu hãnh của Tổ quốc nơi tuyến đầu. Ở Hà Nội, hàng nghìn học sinh gấp hạc giấy, viết lời chúc gửi đến các chiến sĩ hải đảo. Ở miền Trung, những thanh niên tình nguyện mùa hè xanh dựng lại sân chơi, thắp sáng đường quê. Ở miền Nam, các phong trào khởi nghiệp sáng tạo đang góp phần đưa đất nước hội nhập sâu rộng. Tự hào vì 80 năm qua, từ một đất nước chịu sự đô hộ của thực dân, Việt Nam đã vươn mình thành quốc gia độc lập, thống nhất, ngày càng phát triển, vị thế quốc tế ngày càng vững vàng. Mỗi thành tựu hôm nay đều in dấu mồ hôi, trí tuệ của hàng triệu con người, đều là lời khẳng định rằng sự lựa chọn của lịch sử mùa thu năm 1945 là đúng đắn và bất diệt. Tri ân để nhớ về quá khứ, tự hào để bước vào hiện tại – và cả hai cùng tiếp sức cho tương lai. Cách mạng Tháng Tám để lại cho chúng ta bài học lớn nhất: sức mạnh đoàn kết toàn dân, sức mạnh của khát vọng độc lập, tự do. Đó cũng là hành trang quý giá mà thế hệ hôm nay mang theo để đối diện với những thách thức mới: biến đổi khí hậu, cạnh tranh toàn cầu, nguy cơ phai nhạt bản sắc văn hóa trong hội nhập quốc tế. Trong bối cảnh ấy, việc khơi dậy và lan tỏa tinh thần tri ân, tự hào càng có ý nghĩa. Nó giúp chúng ta giữ vững niềm tin, củng cố bản lĩnh, để không bị cuốn trôi trong vòng xoáy toàn cầu hóa. Đặc biệt, đối với thế hệ trẻ – những chủ nhân của tương lai – tri ân để sống đẹp hơn, tự hào để cống hiến nhiều hơn. Hà Nội – trái tim của cả nước đang tiên phong trong chuỗi sự kiện kỷ niệm 80 năm. Nhưng không chỉ là Hà Nội, ở khắp mọi miền Tổ quốc, từ đồng bằng đến miền núi, từ đất liền đến hải đảo, những hoạt động kỷ niệm cũng diễn ra sôi nổi. Đó là minh chứng rằng tinh thần Cách mạng Tháng Tám và Quốc khánh 2/9 không bao giờ vơi cạn, mà đang được tiếp nối mạnh mẽ qua từng thế hệ. Những ngày tháng Tám và mùa thu 2/9 lịch sử nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng mỗi bước đi hôm nay đều được nâng đỡ bởi hy sinh của cha anh, bởi ánh sáng từ tư tưởng Hồ Chí Minh. Tri ân quá khứ để tự hào hiện tại và từ đó nuôi dưỡng khát vọng dựng xây một Việt Nam hùng cường, thịnh vượng, văn minh, sánh vai cùng các cường quốc năm châu. Những tháng ngày tri ân và tự hào không chỉ là những ngày lễ hội, mà là mạch nguồn nuôi dưỡng tâm hồn dân tộc, là sức mạnh tinh thần để chúng ta tiến lên, vững vàng và kiêu hãnh trên con đường phát triển. Every month, Netflix removes a large selection of movies and TV shows from its library. The psychological thriller, from The Babadook director Jennifer Kent, is a tough watch that isn’t for the faint hearted. Set in 1825, The Nightingale follows a young Irish convict (Aisling Franciosi) who seeks vengeance against members of the Colonial forces of Tasmania after unspeakable acts are committed against her. It could very well be the most brutal film of the last 10 years – and led to cinema walkouts due to its graphic portrayal of rape and murder. Germany's foreign minister hit out Monday at what he called China's repeated threats to "unilaterally change" borders in the Asia-Pacific region, calling Beijing "increasingly aggressive". "China repeatedly threatens, more or less openly, to unilaterally change the status quo and shift borders in its favour," Johann Wadephul said in Japan, citing China's behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas. "Any escalation in this sensitive hub of international trade would have serious consequences for global security and the world economy," Wadephul said after talks with Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya. A statement issued on Sunday before Wadephul's visit to Japan -- and later Indonesia -- said that China was "increasingly asserting its regional supremacy and, in doing so, is also questioning principles of international law." "China's increasingly aggressive behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas also has implications for us in Europe: fundamental principles of our global coexistence are at stake here," the statement quoted Wadephul as saying. In the joint press statement in Tokyo, Wadephul also criticised "China's support for the Russian war machine" in Ukraine. "Without it, the war of aggression against Ukraine would not be possible. China is Russia's largest supplier of dual-use goods and Russia's best oil and gas customer," Wadephul said. He also said ahead of talks later Monday between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders that security guarantees for Kyiv were "crucial". Trump's summit on Friday with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska "made it clear that for a just and lasting peace, Moscow must finally act. Until that happens, pressure on Russia must be increased, including with increased aid to Ukraine," Wadephul said. Swiss watchmaker Swatch has issued an apology and pulled ads featuring images of an Asian male model pulling the corners of his eyes up and backwards in a “slanted eye” pose. The images for the Swatch Essentials collection were widely condemned online in China, where many comments said they appeared to mimic racist taunts about Asian eyes. In an apology posted in both Chinese and English on its official account on the Weibo social media platform Saturday, Swatch said that it has “taken note of the recent concerns” and removed all related materials worldwide. “We sincerely apologise for any distress or misunderstanding this may have caused,” the statement said. It also posted the same apology on Instagram. Swatch Group did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further comment. Swatch, which also makes Omega, Longines and Tissot watches, is heavily exposed to China for revenue, with around 27% of the group’s sales last year coming from the China, Hong Kong and Macau region. Hong Kong prosecutors on Monday began closing arguments in the trial of pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai, saying the septuagenarian was fit to attend hearings after an adjournment last week to equip him with a heart monitor. The 77-year-old founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily newspaper has pleaded not guilty to two counts of foreign collusion, with authorities accusing him of using various platforms to lobby Western nations to sanction China and Hong Kong. The charges are brought under the city's national security law, which Beijing imposed after the finance hub saw huge and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests in 2019. The trial was scheduled to begin its final stages last Thursday but was postponed twice: first due to bad weather and then to address Lai's medical needs. The defence had said on Friday that Lai was experiencing heart "palpitations" and had an episode where he felt like he was "collapsing". Prosecutor Anthony Chau said on Monday that Lai had been prescribed medication and was wearing a heart rate monitoring device, which was given to him on Friday. "(Lai) has made no complaint on his heart condition or general health condition and is fit to attend court," Chau said. Judge Esther Toh also read out a memo by a senior medical officer saying that Lai was "physically and mentally fit for court". Concerns have been raised previously over Lai's health by his family and rights groups. The media tycoon has been kept behind bars since December 2020, reportedly in solitary confinement, and has lost weight during that time. The Hong Kong government said in a statement on Friday that the "medical care received by Lai Chee-ying in custody is adequate and comprehensive". "In view of (Lai's) claims of heart palpitations, after a visiting specialist from the Hospital Authority conducted a detailed examination on him on August 7, no abnormality was found," the statement read. - Legal issues debated - Dressed in a white shirt and pale windbreaker, Lai appeared in court on Monday without any medical equipment visible on his body. He smiled and waved to supporters and family members in the public gallery when he entered. He listened to Monday's court proceedings via a set of headphones and closed his eyes for a few minutes during the morning session. The longrunning trial, which began in December 2023, is entering its final stages as Western nations and rights groups continue to call for Lai's release. Aside from the collusion offence -- which could land him in prison for life -- Lai is also charged with "seditious publication" related to 161 op-eds carrying his byline. Prosecutors are expected to take two days to make closing arguments, Chau said. He spent Monday morning addressing legal issues, such as the interpretation of "collusion" under Hong Kong's national security law. Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said last week that Hong Kong should "drop the baseless charges" against Lai, adding that holding him in "prolonged solitary detention while his health fails has been outrageously cruel". US President Donald Trump told a Fox News radio programme last week that he brought up the tycoon's case with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Strips of bare land scar the lush and green mountainsides towering above Mutsamudu, the capital of the Indian Ocean island of Anjouan. On the most mountainous and densely populated island in the Comoros, only the most remote forests have escaped decades of deforestation -- ravages which several NGOs are now trying to repair. "We lost 80 percent of our natural forests between 1995 and 2014," Abubakar Ben Mahmoud, environment minister of the country off northern Mozambique, told AFP in a recent interview. The clearing of the forest for cultivation has compounded damage caused by the production of ylang-ylang essential oil, used in luxury perfumes, and the manufacture of traditional carved wooden doors for which the island is renowned. With a high population density of more than 700 residents per square kilometre, "Deforestation has been intensified as farmers are looking for arable land for their activities," the minister said. The brown and barren patches on the slopes are starkly visible from the headquarters of Dahari, a leading organisation in the fight against deforestation, based in the hills of Mutsamudu. The NGO last year launched a reforestation programme, working hand-in-hand with local farmers who are called "water guardians". Under a five-year conservation contract, the farmers commit to replanting their land or leaving it fallow in exchange for financial compensation, said one of the project's managers, Misbahou Mohamed. The first phase has included 30 farmers, with compensation paid out after inspection of the plots. - Perfume and smoke - Another significant contributor to deforestation on Anjouan, the ylang-ylang essential oil industry, has in recent years heeded calls to limit its impact. The Comoros is among the world's top producers of the delicate and sweet-smelling yellow flower, prized for its supposed relaxing properties and widely used in perfumes like the famous Chanel No 5. The production of ylang-ylang, vanilla and cloves makes up a large part of the archipelago's agricultural output, which represents a third of its GDP. The country has around 10,000 ylang-ylang producers, most based on Anjouan, according to a report commissioned by the French Development Agency for a project to support Comoran agricultural exports. Burning wood is the cheapest source of fuel for the distillation process, the report highlighted, with 250 kilogrammes (550 pounds) needed to produce one litre of essential oil. Some producers are trying to limit their use of wood, such as Mohamed Mahamoud, 67, who said he halved consumption by upgrading his equipment. "I now use third-generation stainless steel alembics, with an improved oven equipped with doors and chimneys," said Mahamoud, who has grown and distilled ylang-ylang near the town of Bambao Mtsanga for nearly 45 years. To avoid encroaching on the forest, most of his wood now comes from mango and breadfruit trees he grows himself. - Drying rivers - Some producers have in recent years switched to crude oil to fuel their stills. But that costs twice as much wood, said one ylang-ylang exporter, who asked to remain anonymous. And high electricity prices in Comoros mean that using electrical energy would cost 10 times more, "not to mention the long periods of power cuts", he said. Part of the drive to reduce wood consumption comes from an alarming observation: not only is deforestation stripping Anjouan's mountains, it is also drying up its rivers. Forests are essential for "the infiltration of water that feeds rivers and aquifers... like a sponge that retains water and releases it gradually", said hydroclimatologist Abdoul Oubeidillah. "In 1925, there were 50 rivers with a strong year-round flow of water," said Bastoini Chaambani, from the environmental protection NGO Dayima. "Today, there are fewer than 10 rivers that flow continuously." The Comoros government has meanwhile announced it also intends to take part in reforestation efforts. PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) -Authorities in Pakistan resumed rescue and relief work on Monday in the country's northwest where flash floods have killed over 300 people after heavy rain forced them to suspend operations for several hours, a government official said. Heavy rains that started on Friday have claimed lives and spread destruction in several northern districts, with most people killed in flash floods, according to the National Disaster Management Authority. In hilly areas, the rains caused flash floods as well as mud and rock slides that washed away houses, buildings, vehicles and belongings. Buner district was the worst hit, with over 200 deaths. Heavy rain in the flood-hit areas, including Buner, forced rescue teams to halt relief efforts for several hours on Monday, a regional government officer, Abid Wazir, told Reuters. "Our priority is now to clear the roads, set up bridges and bring relief to the affected people," he said. Relief goods have been sent to the affected areas, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told local Geo News television. Food, medicine, blankets, camps, an electric generator and de-watering pumps are included in the relief goods, the disaster management authority said in a statement. Quá trình điều tra xác định, khoảng 0h20 cùng ngày, 2 vợ chồng D. và Hạ cùng đi ăn liên hoan, uống rượu rồi về nhà thì xảy ra mâu thuẫn cãi nhau. Sau đó, Hạ đã sử dụng dao bằng kim loại, loại dao gọt hoa quả đâm vào mạn sườn bên trái và rút dao ra làm anh D. chảy máu. Anh D. ôm vết thương bỏ chạy ra ngoài thì Hạ tiếp tục cầm dao dồn đuổi theo. Cùng lúc này, ông M. và bà H. (bố mẹ của D.) can ngăn nhưng không được. Nạn nhân bỏ chạy và ngã bất tỉnh ở sân trước cửa nhà, dù được người thân đưa đi cấp cứu tại bệnh viện nhưng nạn nhân đã tử vong. Hiện Cơ quan Cảnh sát điều tra Công an tỉnh Phú Thọ đang tiếp tục điều tra, củng cố hồ sơ để xử lý theo quy định của pháp luật.
