MIAMI (AP) — A federal judge in Miami issued a split decision in a lawsuit over the legal rights of detainees at the “Alligator Alcatraz” immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades, dismissing part of the suit and also moving the case to a different jurisdiction. U.S. District Judge Rodolfo Ruiz issued the decision late Monday, writing in a 47-page ruling that claims the detainees at the facility don’t have confidential access to their lawyers or to hearings in immigration court were rendered moot when the Trump administration recently designated the Krome North Processing Center near Miami as a site for their cases to be heard. The judge heard arguments from both sides in a hearing earlier Monday in Miami. Civil rights civil rights attorneys were seeking a preliminary injunction to ensure detainees at the facility have access to their lawyers and can get a hearing. The state and federal government had argued that even though the isolated airstrip where the facility is located is owned by Miami-Dade County, Florida’s southern district was the wrong venue since the detention center is located in neighboring Collier County, which is in the state’s middle district. Judge Ruiz had hinted during a hearing last week that he had some concerns over which jurisdiction was appropriate. The state and federal government defendants made an identical argument last week about jurisdiction for a second lawsuit in which environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe sued to stop further construction and operations at the Everglades detention center until it’s in compliance with federal environmental laws. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami on Aug. 7 ordered a 14-day halt on additional construction at the site while witnesses testified at a hearing that wrapped up last week. She has said she plans to issue a ruling before the order expires later this week. Cuomo, who is running for mayor of the nation's most populous city as an independent after Mamdani topped him by double digits in June's Democratic Party primary, argues that if the 33-year-old democratic socialist state lawmaker from Queens wins in November, "New York City would become prostitution capital of the country." Mamdani, whose victory over Cuomo and nine other candidates in the Democratic mayoral primary sent political shock waves across the country, called for the decriminalization of sex work when he first ran for the state legislature in 2020. And as a state assemblyman, Mamdani co-sponsored bills to decriminalize sex work statewide. A Venezuelan refugee who fled political persecution is warning that socialist policies pushed by New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani will bring the same hardships to America. "Young people who right now are trying to support socialist ideas because they think this time would be different — it would not be different," Franklin Camargo, 27, told Fox News Digital. "You don’t want the government to dictate your life. You don’t want the government to stop you from having aspirations, from having desires, from pursuing your own happiness. Mamdani, a democratic socialist who secured the Democratic Party nomination for New York City mayor in June, ran a campaign focused on making the city more affordable for the average resident. His platform includes freezing rent prices, investing in public housing, city-owned grocery stores, "no-cost" child care, and higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Mamdani has advocated for more equality in the city, state and across the country, and has argued there should be no billionaires. But Camargo, who escaped dictator Nicolás Maduro's regime, argues that the problems facing New Yorkers are the result of government intervention and statism, not individualism or capitalism. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – The 5 AM advisory on Tuesday shows that Erin continues to weaken, but it is still a major hurricane. Life-threatening surf and rip currents across the East Coast of the United States this week, as Erin passes off the coast. The latest 5 a.m. advisory on Erin shows the center is located 750 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Winds are currently at 115 mph. Erin is moving northwest at 7 mph. The barometric pressure is at 955 mb. A tropical storm watch is in effect for central North Carolina. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are likely to see tropical storm-force winds (greater than 35 mph) and outer rainbands. Mandatory evacuations were issued in Dare County. On Monday, there were more than 50 rip current rescues along North Carolina area beaches. High pressure developing over the East Coast, along with a cold front on Thursday, will keep Erin off our coast. The latest GFS (black) and European (white) models are in good agreement with Erin’s offshore position, which, for overnight Wednesday, is estimated to be 300-350 miles to our east. Locally, impacts will be in the form of dangerous rip currents through the end of the week for the Grand Strand. A high surf and small craft advisory is in effect for today and tomorrow. The Grand Strand could see 5- to 7-foot waves in the surf zone Tuesday night through Thursday, along with 16-30-foot waves 20-200 miles offshore. Because of this, a small craft advisory has been issued until Thursday. Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion will be possible during high tide cycles. Especially on Thursday night, when the high tide at Springmaid Pier will be near 7 ft, which would lead to flooding in Cherry Grove and Garden City. However, it wasn’t the end of the Sportster name. The Harley-Davidson Sportster S looks much sportier than its predecessor, and with the new 121-horsepower Revolution Max 1250T engine, the Sportster S is way more powerful than the Evo models. The Sportster S also has electronic rider aids and cruise control, as well as a six-speed gearbox. Perhaps the one thing that hints at its heritage is the peanut-shaped gas tank. Harley-Davidson Nightster SpecialImage Credit: Harley-Davidson MotorcyclesLooking at the Harley-Davidson Nightster, we can all agree it’s the Sportster’s true successor. It looks like a slightly updated Sportster and retains everything that made the original great but with a new-and-improved engine. The Nightster Special looks sinister with its murdered-out look, and its peanut-style gas tank is a nod to the past. We certainly wouldn’t mind throwing a leg over one, and it’s hard to find a more stylish companion for short rides. Indian Challenger EliteImage Credit: Indian Motorcycle.If you want to ride across continents on two wheels, the Indian Challenger Elite is definitely worth considering. With a 1,768cc V-twin engine producing 128 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque, it’s as powerful as a small hatchback... and nearly as spacious. The Challenger Elite also has a very comfortable saddle, which is a must for a touring bike, cruise control, and a plethora of rider aids. As far as large cruisers go, it even looks menacing. Buell Firebolt XB12RImage Credit: ウェルワィ / Wiki Commons.Years before the aforementioned Hammerhead 1190, Buell built the excellent XB12, proving that Harley-Davidson V-twin engines could be used in a sporty platform. According to Motorcycle News, the Buell Firebolt XB12R is not the most comfortable bike, but it still offers plenty of fun on twisty roads. The last models rolled off the assembly line in 2010, and certain parts are hard to come by today, so owning one can be a bit of a chore. However, Buell enthusiasts won’t let that stop them, and they enjoy their excellent bikes as often as possible. Indian Scout RogueImage Credit: Indian Motorcycle.Indian introduced the Scout back in 2015, and only recently did it get a successor. However, we still want the Indian Scout Rogue that appeared in the summer of 2022, as it’s one of the baddest-looking bikes to ever grace an Indian showroom with its presence. It packs a 1,133cc liquid-cooled engine that sends 100 horsepower and 72 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheel and looks more aggressive than any other Scout version. It’s essentially a murdered-out club-style bike straight from the factory, featuring mini-ape bars, a quarter-fairing, and a 19-inch cast-aluminum front wheel. Our only complaint is the low rear suspension, but that’s easily sorted by ordering the optional one when buying the bike. Harley-Davidson Street Bob 114Image Credit: Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.Harley-Davidson’s stripped-down Street Bob 114 is a no-nonsense cruiser built specifically for those who want to modify their bike. It has proper retro styling but still looks timeless, and H-D enthusiasts love that "Number One" graphic on the tank. While the 94-horsepower, air-cooled 114 cubic-inch engine is old-school, it also packs some nifty modern features, such as rear-cylinder deactivation. Harley-Davidson Road Glide SpecialImage Credit: Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.The Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special certainly lives up to its name, as it is one of the best American touring bikes money can buy. It’s big and stylish, and although its 117 cubic-inch engine only generates 105 horsepower, you’ll never find yourself wanting more due to how it delivers those ponies and 130 lb-ft of torque. The Road Glide Special is a heavy beast, weighing over 800 lbs, so it’s definitely not a bike for inexperienced riders. Harley designed and engineered the new adventure-touring motorcycle from the ground up. Its versatile 1250 Revolution Max engine produces 150 horsepower, it has long-travel suspension, switchable riding modes, and pretty much everything else ADV enthusiasts have come to expect from brands such as BMW and KTM.
