I Spent Two Weeks Driving a Polaris Slingshot. Here's My Brutally Honest Review originally appeared on Autoblog. Just for the fun of itSometimes you need to toss out logic to really enjoy something. That’s the case with the Slingshot. It’s loud, it’s impractical, and it makes absolutely no sense as a “commuter vehicle”—but that’s exactly what makes it so memorable. In some ways, it's as close as you can get to flying while driving, and you are truly immersed in an action movie every time you hit the "start" button. What is the Polaris Slingshot?Technically, it’s classified as an autocycle in most states. That means you don’t need a motorcycle license to drive it, but helmet laws vary depending on where you are. In California, when I received my green Slingshot, helmets were required. You get three wheels (two up front, one in the back), open-air driving, no doors, no real roof, and just enough creature comforts to make it usable. It’s not pretending to be a car, even though it has side-by-side seating, a steering wheel, and seatbelts. It’s also definitely not a motorcycle, even if it shares that same “exposed to the elements” feel. It’s a hybrid of experiences that lands somewhere in between. It is, however, far easier to drive (and far more comfortable) than a Morgan Super 3 or a Campagna T-Rex three-wheeler. Since it weighs under 1,700 lbs, the Slingshot is quick. 0–60 mph happens in under 5 seconds in the top trims. It’s not supercar fast, but the open cockpit makes everything feel way more dramatic. The economy is a bit of a mixed bag because this isn’t an EPA-rated vehicle. Expect around 28–33 mpg, depending on how hard you drive it. The design of the Polaris SlingshotPolaris stands for "Polarizing" when it comes to the design of the Slingshot. I prefer the anachronistic design of the Morgan Super 3's exterior, but I noticed that kids absolutely loved the fins, blades, wings, rudders, and other design elements sprouting from the Slingshot. It's not attractive, but it is eye-catching. It's also hard to sum up its proportions as the front is nearly as wide as a Corvette, but the length is closer to a Mini Cooper. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The interior is meant to be used even in the rain, so it has materials that are water-resistant, and all of its storage compartments have gaskets to keep dirt and moisture out. Two large compartments that are just large enough to hold helmets sit behind the seats, while the glove compartment is huge and can easily hold a small backpack. There’s a small cellphone holder at your elbow as well, along with some USB ports and a Bluetooth stereo system that seems to be an afterthought for those who have to wear a helmet. In other words, good luck hearing the Beach Boys while driving down PCH, which is exactly what I did. Driving the Polaris SlingshotYou sit extremely low, really low, like go-kart low. You will feel just about every bump in the road, but also every ounce of feedback. Having three wheels means you can’t avoid many potholes or road irregularities in your lane. The steering is razor-sharp, with almost no weight. It corners flat, especially since the front wheels are so far apart and grip levels are surprisingly good—until they’re not. If you push too hard and if the rear wheel bounces a bit, you will provoke a spin. Still, it’s hard to get to that point, and this thing’s grip is surprising. Acceleration feels wild and aggressive because you’re completely exposed. 0–40 mph in a Slingshot feels like 0–80 mph in a normal car. The best part? It’s raw. There are no power steering modes, no adaptive suspension, no overly filtered electronic nannies, and not much in terms of safety either. Just you, the road, and a machine that wants to play. It was ridiculous fun blasting by the beach and carving through the canyons. During my two-week loan, I decided to try using the Slingshot as a daily driver. The challenge here was to commute from the beach community to the city of Hollywood in one piece. Sure, it was doable, but the feeling of being crushed by a massive (in scale) CR-V was palpable. It isn’t too shabby in smaller neighborhoods, off the main highway, but it isn’t ideal for transporting passengers, to say the least. Still, I had more kids (and some adults) wave at me, smile, and even laugh as I cruised by. Final thoughtsThe Polaris Slingshot isn’t a car you need. It’s a toy you want. At a local car show, I brought the green Slingshot just for fun and parked it next to my friend’s Lamborghini and a brand-new 911. Guess which vehicle people were most interested in? Starting around $21,000 and going well over $35,000 for fully loaded trims, it’s cheaper than most sports cars but far more impractical. Yet it offers an experience few vehicles in its price range can match. If you want something unique that turns every drive into an event, it’s perfect. Our colleagues at The War Zone dug up some intel that the United States Air Force wants to buy a couple of Tesla Cybertrucks to shoot missiles at. It’s the only make/model called out specifically on a recently discovered wants-list of 33 target practice vehicles to get blown up at the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico. Obviously, the image and idea are pretty funny, but the reasoning seems odd. The military acquires cars and trucks to destroy for training purposes all the time. Typically, targets are specified broadly, by body style (sedan, SUV, pickup, and so on). But as Joseph Trevithick reported last night: “The explicit requirement for the Cybertrucks—which do not need to be in running condition, but do need to be able to roll towed behind another vehicle—requires a formal sole-source justification, a redacted copy of which is among the documents that AFTC has shared online.” In short, the USAF thinks the Cybertruck’s unique design and EV powertrain will show up on a battlefield soon. And whoever’s in charge of target recommendations thinks that acquiring two of them to shoot at will be a valuable training exercise. Here’s the language the military’s using exactly: “On 13 February 2025, market research was conducted to assess the competition for the Tesla Cybertruck by evaluating its design, materials, impact resistance, and innovative technologies. The study revealed that the Cybertruck’s aggressively angular and futuristic design, paired with its unpainted stainless steel exoskeleton, sets it apart from competitors typically using painted steel or aluminum bodies.” “Additionally, its 48V electrical architecture provides superior power and efficiency, a feature that rivals are only beginning to develop. Extensive internet searches and industry outreach by [redacted] found no vehicles with features comparable to those of the Cybertruck.” “…[redacted] intends to uses [sic] specific Tesla manufactured vehicles for target vehicle training flight test events. In the operating theatre it is likely the type of vehicles used by the enemy may transition to Tesla Cyber trucks [sic] as they have been found not to receive the normal extent of damage expected upon major impact,” it adds. “Testing needs to mirror real world situations. The intent of the training is to prep the units for operations by simulating scenarios as closely as possible to the real world situations.” As found by The War Zone: Sections of the contracting document explaining the justification for Cybertrucks for use as range targets. USAFThat last paragraph is particularly eye-catching, especially since TWZ didn’t find any elaboration on what the Air Force meant by “operating theatre” in this context. The Cybertruck is currently only sold en masse in the United States and Mexico. Some have popped up in other corners of the world, and it is slated for sale in the Middle East this year (specifically Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar). But even after seeing Ramzan Kadyrov’s machine gun-equipped Cybertruck on CNN, the odds of encountering Cybertrucks as enemy combatant units on a field of battle seem low. Is the US government gearing up to engage targets in the Erewhon parking lot by Venice Beach? Or just looking to conveniently take unsold CTs off Tesla’s hands? I get the point about the vehicle’s design, love it or hate it, it’s undeniably unique-looking. But, in all seriousness, couldn’t the USAF get the same result by bolting some angled sheets of steel onto a golf cart or a trailer? If the Cybertrucks it needs don’t have to be running, I don’t see the practical difference between shooting at one of them versus a teepee of slanted steel. Or a dumpster. It all seems a little sketchy, especially if the Air Force plans to acquire new six-figure Cybertrucks to blow up. If their procurement people are savvy enough to pull a couple out of a Copart salvage yard, then I guess it’s fine. But I’d still like to know more about why the military thinks it’s going to be shooting at these for real in the near future. The Detroit giant has finally announced the starting price of the most extreme version of the eight-generation ‘Vette: $207,395. And while that figure easily makes it the most expensive C8 you can buy; it is a lower, and in some cases significantly so, than the overwhelming majority of the vehicle’s high-performance peers. Love the feel of the wind running through your hair? The convertible body style starts at $217,395. Want the top-of-the-line 3LZ trim package, which adds premium leather, carbon-fiber accents, and a Bose sound system? The fully loaded ZR1X will start at $218,395 and $228,395, respectively. But the most expensive ZR1X will be the exclusive Quail Silver Limited Edition, which will make its public debut at “The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering” during Monterey Car Week. This version of the car, which is a convertible with the 3LZ trim package, is finished in Blade Silver Matte and starts at $241,395. Why is that color so special? Because the hue, which is inspired by the C1’s Inca Silver color option, is the first matte production paint to feature on a Corvette since the 1960s. The ZR1X starting price is $30,000 more than that of the next closest C8, the regular ZR1. There’s good reason for this, the range-topper is a supercar through and through. Its powertrain includes a mid-mounted 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 and a front-axle electric motor. The duo combines to produce an outlandish 1,250 hp and 973 ft lbs of torque, thanks to which the car can rocket from zero to 60 mph in under two seconds and hit a top speed of 233. If that wasn’t impressive enough, just last week Chevy announced that the ZR1X had circled the Nürburgring in 6:49.275 minutes, making it the fastest American car in the track’s history. While $207,395 is certainly not cheap, it is a lot less than some of the car that the ZR1X is competing with. There isn’t a single Ferrari priced lower than America’s preeminent sports car (the most accessible, the Roma, starts at $243,360). It’s not just Prancing Horses that cost more than the most hardcore ‘Vette. The 1,001-hp Lamborghini Revuelto starts at $608,000, while the 1,275-hp McLaren W1 starts at $2.1 million. After the fashion designer was found dead on a boat docked at Long Island's Montauk Yacht Club, the Suffolk County Police Department shared new details about the case. "An autopsy conducted on Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra, the woman found dead on a boat in Montauk on August 5, did not show evidence of violence," the Aug. 6 update noted. "Her final cause of death is pending further examination." Officials shared in the press release that East Hampton Town Police arrived at the scene after a man, who found the 33-year-old's body, called 911 around midnight. Although CPR was administered on the designer, per authorities, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Montauk Yacht Club, which sits on a sprawling 16-acre waterfront property, emphasized its commitment to working with officials. A spokesperson told CBS News, "We are saddened to learn of the tragic incident that took place.
