View the full article
  9. Tennessee is among the toughest states for traffic enforcement in the United States, according to a new study published by Forbes. The report, based on research from Davidoff Law Personal Injury Lawyers, examined all U.S. states and noted the most common speeding fines, using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Federal Highway Administration and NOLO, a publisher of legal information. "Tennessee, according to the study, has small fines for speeding, the highest fatal accident rate and strict DUI laws," Forbes wrote. "A license is suspended for one year after the first DUI conviction." Here's what we know about traffic enforcement in Tennessee. How much could you pay in Tennessee for speeding?Speeding tickets in Tennessee are relatively inexpensive, as they are coupled with points that go on your record when a ticket is paid. Between one and eight points can be added to a driving record for moving traffic violations. All points remain on driving records for two years, and if 12 or more points are received, it will result in the revocation of the driver's license. How harsh are Tennessee's DUI laws?In Tennessee, several laws and guidelines are in place for individuals found guilty of driving under the influence. The Department of Safety and Homeland Security is responsible for managing public safety and DUI offenses. A first-time offense can result in a fine ranging from $350 to $1,500. A second offense will result in a mandatory fine of $600 to $3,500. A third offense requires a mandatory fine of $1,100 to $10,000. Any offenses after a third require a mandatory fine of $3,000 to $15,000 and result in a Class E felony. A license will be suspended for one year per offense. If a person has two DUI offenses, their license will be suspended for a period of two years. All DUI offenses of vehicular assault, child endangerment, vehicular homicide, and aggravated vehicular assault while driving intoxicated will result in either a Class D, Class B or Class A felony. Top ten traffic safety laws in TennesseeAccording to the Department of Safety & Homeland Security, these are the top driving laws to be aware of in Tennessee. Open Container Law (TCA 55-10-416) Texting While Driving Law (TCA 55-8-199) Move Over Law (TCA 55-8-132) Seat Belt Law (TCA 55-9-603) Speeding in Construction Zones Law (TCA 55-8-153) Handgun Carry Permit Law (TCA 39-17-1351) Tennessee's DUI Law and Penalties (TCA 55-10-401 and 55-10-403) Maximum Length of Recreational Vehicle Combination Law (TCA 55-7-201) Child Restraint Devices Law (TCA 55-9-602) Motorcycle Helmet Law (TCA 55-9-302) What states have the strictest traffic laws?Illinois took the top spot for strictest traffic laws, with fines reaching up to $1,500 for drivers caught going 26–34 mph over the speed limit. 10. A 30-year-old man from Raleigh, North Carolina, died after going underwater in a cold alpine lake in Washington, deputies said. Someone sent a 911 text at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, from Colchuck Lake, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 6 Facebook post. The man, who has not been identified by authorities, hiked to the icy vibrant blue lake from Colchuck Trail with three friends, spokesperson Jason Reinfeld told McClatchy News in an Aug. 7 email. Reinfeld said the group then got in the water to swim. They were swimming “across a small inlet” on the west side of the lake when the man couldn’t swim further, Reinfeld said. The man was about 20 yards from the shore when he went underwater for about five minutes, Reinfeld said. Another hiker pulled the victim out of the water. The hiker and the man’s friends took turns performing CPR until first responders got to the scene, Reinfeld said. Because of the remote mountain area, the man was hoisted into an Army helicopter at about 8:45 p.m., deputies said in the news release. He was transported to the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery where he was pronounced dead, deputies said. Colchuck Lake is about a 15-mile drive southwest from Leavenworth, a Bavarian-style village and tourist destination. The lake is icy and deep blue, making it a popular hiking area, according to the Washington Trails Association. 11. A protestor wears the transgender flag as a large crowd gathers in front of the state Capitol in Oklahoma City on Feb. 3, 2025, to protest deportations and immigration enforcement in schools. (Photo by Emma Murphy/Oklahoma Voice) OKLAHOMA CITY — A federal appeals court has upheld Oklahoma’s ban on gender-affirming procedures for minors. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, which represents the region of Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, found Wednesday that the Oklahoma Legislature’s 2023 ban was not intended to discriminate against transgender children. The unanimous ruling relied on a recent Supreme Court decision, United States v. Skrmetti, which upheld a similar Tennessee ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. The Oklahoma Legislature passed the ban with Senate Bill 613 in May 2023. The law bans gender-affirming medical treatments for Oklahomans under 18 years old and creates a felony for health care providers who violate the ban. A group of transgender youth, their families and a medical professional sued the state over the law with the support of Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma. The plaintiffs contended the ban violated their rights under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Oklahoma Attorney Gentner Drummond celebrated the decision in a statement Thursday and said he’s “grateful the battle is now won.” “Thanks to this critical victory, our children will no longer be subjected to the lifelong consequences of these damaging procedures,” he said. The Northern District of Oklahoma previously upheld the ban in October 2023, allowing the law to be enforced. In a joint statement Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Oklahoma said they are considering next steps but will “never stop fighting” for the future of transgender people. “Yesterday’s ruling is a devastating outcome for transgender youth and their families across Oklahoma and another tragic result of the Supreme Court’s errant and harmful ruling in Skrmetti,” the statement read. “Oklahoma’s ban is openly discriminatory and provably harmful to the transgender youth of this state, putting political dogma above parents, their children, and their family doctors.” The ban “unjustly and unfairly” targets transgender youth and violates their rights, the statement said. 12. U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer speaks to new apprentices at Micron Technology in Boise at a ceremony celebrating the first cohort of the company’s new workforce training program. (Laura Guido/Idaho Capital Sun) U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer visited Boise-based Micron Technology on Wednesday to recognize the large semiconductor company’s first graduating class of its registered apprenticeship program. The five young adults recognized were part of the inaugural class of an “earn while you learn” program at Micron, in which participants work in technician positions while earning either an approved technical certificate or two-year associate’s degree with their tuition paid for by Micron. Registered apprenticeships are industry-vetted and approved by the U.S. Department of Labor or a state apprenticeship agency. The company also formally accepted 22 people into the second cohort of the program. Trump administration official praises Idaho LaunchChavez-DeRemer and Idaho Gov. Brad Little highlighted the model of workforce development training as necessary to supply the state and nation with a skilled workforce. “It’s been my mission to keep talking about the registered apprenticeships and keep expanding them into the new and high demand industries,” Chavez-DeRemer said. She highlighted Idaho Launch, which the Legislature passed in 2023 and has been a centerpiece policy of Little’s tenure as governor. The grant program is available to graduating Idaho high school seniors to pay for higher education tuition or workforce training in careers deemed “high demand” by the Idaho Workforce Development Council. “It really is something that I will take back to the president and through this country as something we don’t need to reinvent the wheel,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “We just need to make sure that we’re duplicating what you all have had this success in doing.” The grant program narrowly passed in the Idaho Legislature and has received criticism from many lawmakers in the Republican supermajority, who argue it is a “handout” and that funding beyond K-12 education goes beyond state government’s role. James Byers, Micron corporate communications manager, told the Idaho Capital Sun that apprenticeship participants “may first apply to other private or public funding, such as Launch, and then Micron will pay the rest.” The governor’s office could not immediately be reached for comment on whether Launch grants were used for the apprenticeship program. Chavez-DeRemer highlighted the benefits of apprenticeships programs, citing her office’s statistic that on average, graduates of registered apprenticeships make around $11,000 more than recent college graduates. “Congratulations on making that investment in yourselves,” she told the graduating class. Chavez-DeRemer is a former one-term congresswoman from Oregon and mayor of the Portland suburb of Happy Valley. The U.S. Senate confirmed her as labor secretary in March. Micron is investing $200 billion in expanding domestic manufacturingThe technology company, which is building a $15 billion semiconductor fabrication facility at its campus in southeast Boise, announced in June that it plans to spend another $30 billion to build a second memory fabrication plant, BoiseDev reported. The Boise investments are part of a larger plan to spend $200 billion to expand the company’s domestic manufacturing, Micron Executive Vice President of Global Operations Manish Bhatia said Wednesday. “This is the largest single investment announcement by any manufacturing company ever in the history of the United States,” Bhatia said. He told the graduating and incoming apprentices that they would be key to the “AI revolution,” as many powerful artificial intelligence processors rely on semiconductors. The federal government last year announced that Micron would receive $6.2 billion from the CHIPS Act, passed by Congress in 2022. Idaho’s entire congressional delegation voted against the act, arguing it included unrelated spending. 13. A federal judge on Thursday ordered a temporary halt to construction at an immigration detention center — built in the middle of the Florida Everglades and dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” — as attorneys argue whether it violates environmental laws. The facility can continue to operate and hold detainees for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but workers will be barred from adding any new filling, paving or infrastructure for the next 14 days. US District Judge Kathleen Williams issued the ruling during a hearing and said she will issue a written order later Thursday. Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe have asked Williams to issue a preliminary injunction to halt operations and further construction. The suit claims the project threatens environmentally sensitive wetlands that are home to protected plants and animals and would reverse billions of dollars’ worth of environmental restoration. Plaintiffs presented witnesses Wednesday and Thursday in support of the injunction, while attorneys for the state and federal government were scheduled to present next week. Following Thursday’s testimony, Paul Schwiep, an attorney for the environmental groups, asked Williams to issue a temporary restraining order that would at least prevent any new construction at the site while the preliminary injunction was argued. Williams asked Florida attorney Jesse Panuccio if the state would agree to halt construction so that she wouldn’t need to issue the restraining order. She pointed out that anything built at the site would likely remain there permanently, regardless of how the case was ultimately decided. Panuccio said he couldn’t guarantee that the state would stop all work. This sparked an hour-long hearing about the temporary restraining order, which will be in place for the next two weeks while the still ongoing preliminary injunction hearing continues. The crux of the plaintiffs’ argument is that the detention facility violates the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires federal agencies to assess the environmental effects of major construction projects. Panuccio said during the hearing that although the detention center would be holding federal detainees, the construction and operation of the facility is entirely under the state of Florida, meaning the NEPA review wouldn’t apply. Schwiep said the purpose of the facility is for immigration enforcement, which is exclusively a federal function. He said the facility wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the federal government’s desire for a facility to hold detainees. Williams said Thursday that the detention facility was at a minimum a joint partnership between the state and federal government. The lawsuit in Miami against federal and state authorities is one of two legal challenges to the South Florida detention center which was built more than a month ago by the state of Florida on an isolated airstrip owned by Miami-Dade County. A second lawsuit brought by civil rights groups says detainees’ constitutional rights are being violated since they are barred from meeting lawyers, are being held without any charges, and a federal immigration court has canceled bond hearings. A hearing in that case is scheduled for August 18. Under the 55-year-old federal environmental law, federal agencies should have examined how the detention center’s construction would impact the environment, identified ways to minimize the impact and followed other procedural rules such as allowing public comment, according to the environmental groups and the tribe. It makes no difference that the detention center holding hundreds of detainees was built by the state of Florida since federal agencies have authority over immigration, the suit said. Attorneys for federal and state agencies last week asked Williams to dismiss or transfer the injunction request, saying the lawsuit was filed in the wrong jurisdiction. Even though the property is owned by Miami-Dade County, Florida’s southern district is the wrong venue for the lawsuit since the detention center is located in neighboring Collier County, which is in the state’s middle district, they said. Williams had yet to rule on that argument. The lawsuits were being heard as Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis ′ administration apparently was preparing to build a second immigration detention center at a Florida National Guard training center in north Florida. At least one contract has been awarded for what’s labeled in state records as the “North Detention Facility.” This is a developing story and will be updated. 14. It's the question no one thought they'd be asking back in March, yet here we are — smack in the middle of the 2025 F1 summer break. The papaya rockets from Woking are threatening to run away with the whole shebang before sunscreen season even ends. McLaren has been on such a tear, it's made Ferrari look less like a title threat and more like they're fighting Kick Sauber for 7th. The dominance has been so thorough that the championship conversation has shifted from if — to when. Remember "Goldilocks and the Three Bears?" McLaren does — and it's not settling for "just right." This team is scorching hot porridge — but what could happen if their porridge is cooled by an F1 mechanic with a dry ice blower? As it stands, McLaren is sitting pretty with a commanding 559 points in the Constructors' Championship, while their nearest competitor, and we use that term loosely, Ferrari trails with 260. That's a 299-point gap. With a "best case scenario" of 475 points left on the table for any one team to secure with the remaining races and sprints, the math is starting to look pretty grim for the Tifosi. In a perfect, almost comical, best-case scenario for McLaren — where they continue to bang out 1-2 finishes and sweep all the sprint races — they could mathematically clinch the title at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. For those flipping back through your calendars, that's race 17 of 24. They could be popping champagne corks while the rest of the grid is still figuring out their mid-season upgrades. Sure, McLaren's last 4 results were 1-2 victories, but a continuous string of top step finishes is about as likely as a politician admitting they were wrong. It just doesn't happen. Cars break, drivers make mistakes — ever hear of weather? So what's a more realistic, but still optimistic, scenario? Even if McLaren's performance cools off to just their season-average low end, the party is still on for an early celebration. Let's call this the "slightly less inevitable but somehow more inevitable" timeline. This is a working title, but bear with me here. In this version, McLaren isn't scoring a perfect set every race, but they're still consistently out-scoring Ferrari by a healthy margin. If they maintain a strong, but not flawless, points advantage, the numbers point towards a championship coronation at the Singapore Grand Prix. Locking up the title under the lights, and heat, of the Marina Bay Circuit still gives them a whopping six races to spare. To put that in perspective, that's a level of dominance that makes some of Red Bull's recent seasons look like a tight battle. Maybe that second seat is important after all, huh? The Total Meltdown ScenarioLando Norris' McLaren losing the front wing after a collision with teammate Oscar Piastri at the Canadian GP 2025. - Formula 1/YouTubeNow for the fun part. What would it take for McLaren not to win? We're talking about a collapse of epic proportions. Replacing their power units with old Rover diesels slow. A bottling so bad, it'd make WeWork's collapse look like a savvy business move. For Ferrari, or anyone else, to overcome such a deficit, they would need McLaren to suddenly remember what it was like to be, well, the McLaren of a few years ago. It would require a level of self-sabotage not seen since Ferrari's last strategy meeting. Let's imagine a world where both McLaren's cars spontaneously disassemble on every formation lap. And if things really go off the rails? Picture Oscar and Lando going full sibling petty — if one can't have the Drivers' title, then dammit, neither can the other. Meanwhile, Ferrari would have to execute a flawless string of top finishes, a feat they've found increasingly difficult to achieve. Ferrari would need to average roughly 30 points per race weekend while McLaren scores a consistent zero. Obviously third place Mercedes can still be in the mix in this bizarro universe we crafted, but for brevity's sake we will just mention Ferrari. This isn't just unlikely; it borders on the realm of science fiction. It would require horrible luck for one team and a miraculous, almost divine intervention for the other. So while it's possible for McLaren to lose, it's about as probable as finding a cheap boat that doesn't need any work. The rest of the grid isn't racing McLaren anymore — they're racing math. And math always wins. Want more like this? Join the Jalopnik newsletter to get the latest auto news sent straight to your inbox... Read the original article on Jalopnik. View the full article
  15. "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" turns 20 next year, which means there are kids in college who weren't even alive when it came out. In fact, come 2026, "Talladega Nights" will be as old as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" was when "Talladega Nights" first hit theaters. According to Will Ferrell, "We were real adamant up front that our goal wasn't to make fun of NASCAR. We wanted to have fun with NASCAR." Ask Kyle Larson, though, and he doesn't exactly see it that way. According to Larson, the movie turned NASCAR into a joke. That assertion comes from a recent episode of Julian Edelman's Games With Names podcast, which is embedded below. A little more than 44 minutes into the episode, Larson was asked about "Talladega Nights" and said, "I like the movie. I think it did not do anything good for our sport. I think it turned our sport into like a joke, unfortunately. But it is, I mean, that's got to be one of the most popular racing movies." He then added, "I feel like the rest of the world, that's what they think about our sport now." He said it jokingly, so I can't imagine he's too upset about it, but at the same time, come on, man. People were already making NASCAR jokes long before 2006. Maybe he was too busy racing and hanging out with other racers to hear them, but even in the rural Georgia county I grew up in (which has since filled up with a bunch of rich jerks), jokes about NASCAR were pretty darn common. As for the rest of the world, I'm pretty sure they didn't need any help making fun of NASCAR, either. Read more: Every 2025 Formula 1 Livery, Ranked From Worst To Best Days Of Thunder, Though...Ironically, as you can see in the video above, they got onto the subject of "Talladega Nights" when Edelman asked which movie was the best race movie of all time. Larson's answer was "Days of Thunder," the 1990 Tom Cruise film that's both finally getting a sequel and was also hated by NASCAR at the time. When the movie was released 35 years ago, Dale Earnhardt told Entertainment Weekly, "The words out of Tom Cruise's mouth to me were that this was going to be real, as real as racing is today. I just don't think they made it that way." Earnhardt wasn't the only NASCAR driver who didn't like "Days of Thunder," either. In that same article, Alan Kulwicki said, "I don't think they did us justice. They portrayed us like we're running bumper cars." Apparently, the drivers and pit-crew members hated the movie so much, "top NASCAR officials, in closed-door meetings...urged them to keep their Thunder grumblings to themselves," presumably in an attempt to avoid tanking the movie they'd been such a big part of helping make. Of course, Larson, who was born in 1992, wouldn't remember all of that, as he hadn't been born yet. He was also probably still pretty young the first time he saw "Days of Thunder" and just thought it was an awesome movie. On the other hand, he was in high school when "Talladega Nights" came out, so it makes sense that he'd be much more critical of the way it portrayed NASCAR. On top of that, "Talladega Nights" is a comedy and therefore quotable in a way that "Days of Thunder" really isn't. That would probably have been fine on its own, but NASCAR fans also lean heavily conservative, and if there's one thing conservative comedy relies heavily on, it's repetition. There's even an entire subreddit dedicated to it. If you think you've heard too many "Talladega Nights" references at this point, imagine being a NASCAR driver listening to fan after fan repeat the same lines they've heard ten million times before. You'd probably start to resent the movie, too. Want more like this? Join the Jalopnik newsletter to get the latest auto news sent straight to your inbox... Read the original article on Jalopnik. 19. A soggy spin of low pressure high in the atmosphere is promising showers and teasing thunderstorms for the southern tip of the Peninsula beginning Aug. 7, capping temperatures in the low 90s during what is climatologically the hottest days of the year in West Palm Beach. Through Sunday, as much as 2 inches of rain is possible as measured at Palm Beach International Airport with amounts upwards of 3 inches potentially dousing the southern reaches of Miami-Dade County and into Collier and Lee Counties on the southwest coast. The showers aren’t expected to make a significant difference in the sucking drought that dogs southeast Florida, said Donal Harrigan, science and operations manager at the National Weather Service in Miami. August has so far had an average temperature of 85.6 in West Palm Beach, which is 1 degree above normal and ranks the month as the 6th warmest on record. By mid-month, temperatures statewide as measured on a long-term scale will begin a sluggish decline with tiny dips in the mercury that may go largely unnoticed until cool fronts begin drooping south in late September and October. Florida climatologist David Zierden said in a 2024 interview that the hottest day of the year only varies by two or three weeks across the state and can depend on what data and time period is used to measure the temperature. More: Climate change triggers new Florida heat warning chart that alerts when it could be deadly outside In West Palm Beach, the warmest days are Aug. 8 to Aug. 11 when the average normal daytime high tops out at 91.1 degrees, according to an analysis by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) of the years 2006-2020. The highest daily temperature in West Palm Beach this summer was 96 on both Aug. 1 and Aug. 4. That’s six degrees above normal but missed the record of 97 set on both days in 1970 and 1989, respectively. In Jacksonville Beach, the daytime high lingers stubbornly at 89.5 through Aug. 14, while Naples suffers with a high of 92.1 through Aug. 22. Tallahassee’s top average temp of 92.3 stretches painfully from late July to Aug. 6 before it begins to tick down. Although summer’s astronomical beginning is June 21 when solar radiation reaching Earth is at its highest, temperatures continue to rise for weeks after because the daytime sunshine and heat is greater than overnight cooldowns. A small reprieve in temperatures with the pending forecast for rainfall won’t last long, Harrigan said. “There will be cooler actual temperatures but we look to remain above average on the back side of the low pressure system,” he said. And, the humidity will keep “feels like” temperatures in the range of 105 to 108 degrees through Sunday. U.S. Drought Monitor map released Aug. 7, 2025 shows drought levels through Aug. 5.Through the weekend, meteorologists are warning of the potential for localized flooding, particularly if showers stall over an area. Some areas may welcome a soaking. About 78% of Palm Beach County is suffering moderate to severe drought, which are levels one and two on a four-tier drought scale. Miami-Dade and Broward counties also have areas with the level three category of extreme drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor report released Aug. 7. “The probability of putting a dent in the drought will be the highest in southern Miami-Dade County where the sea breeze zips up from the bottom but I doubt we’ll cut too much into it, maybe a category at best across Palm Beach County,” Harrigan said. More: 126 days with temps that feel like 105 degrees? Florida's heading that way Nearly three months into the rainy season, which officially ends Oct. 15, rainfall in West Palm Beach is down 13.4 inches for the year. Fort Lauderdale has a deficit of 15 inches and Miami is down nearly 5 inches. Sammy Hadi, a meteorologist with the Miami NWS office, said a strong Bermuda High is to blame for the parched southeast coast. Its persistent easterly winds have caused afternoon sea breezes to push deeper into the center of the state keeping daily showers away from the coast. At the same time, he said the easterly flow has resulted in fewer heat advisory days compared to last year. Through Aug. 6, Palm Beach County has had nine days where the high humidity combined with high temperatures warranted an advisory. In 2024 there were 20 days with heat advisories through Aug. 6, caused, in part, by a weaker Bermuda High. “The pattern in 2024 featured warm southwesterly/southerly winds heated by the shallow and hot nearshore Gulf waters,” Hadi said. 21. Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel said he remains confident Intel Corp. will complete its $28 billion semiconductor manufacturing plant in Licking County. Tressel's comments came hours after U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno alleged that the company is failing to meet its commitment to Ohioans and questioned the CEO's ties to the Chinese government. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Moreno accused CEO Lip-Bu Tan of having ties to the "CCP," an apparent reference to the Chinese Communist Party. The senator called on Tan to "immediately resign" and also said Ohio should conduct a fraud investigation into the executive. When Tressel was asked about Tan's connection to China during a New Albany Amazon data center event Aug. 7, he said he didn't have information about a potential connection. “I don't know exactly what the story is. Obviously, if someone's a part of the CCP, it's a problem in my mind. But I think you have to be fair until facts come out," he said. "You don't really know the story, and we're going to continue to have confidence that Intel's going to keep progressing." Tressel said he remains confident that Intel will fulfill its promises to Ohio, despite Moreno's comments. “Maybe some people have more information than others, but based upon the information I have — and I've been out there, I've seen the work they're doing — I know nothing that tells me that their intentions aren't good, but we'll see as facts come out,” he said. But Tressel said he understands frustrations about project delays. Intel's first factory was initially scheduled to open in 2025, but the company told The Dispatch earlier this year that it had delayed the opening of its Ohio fabs until at least 2030 or 2031. In its July 24 second-quarter earnings report, company officials said Intel will further slow the pace of construction at its future Ohio microchip factories. It's unclear how the announcement will precisely affect Intel's opening date in Ohio. Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel speaks about the Amazon data center at the Brick House Blue on Aug. 7 in New Albany."Big things are hard. Sometimes the progress doesn't happen like you’d like it to. Again, I don't know any other thing to do other than be confident that we're going to get this thing figured out. I don't know anything that tells me that's impossible," he said. "We'll go day by day as we get more information." Tressel said he's still confident that the Silicon Heartland that Intel promised will still come to fruition. “There's always bumps in the road, and there's always challenges. You have to see where the situation really is. You have to adjust," he said. "You're really measured by what you do going forward, and going forward from here, the facts will get on the table. We'll figure it out.” Eastern Columbus suburbs reporter Maria DeVito can be reached at [email protected] and @mariadevito13.dispatch.com on Bluesky and @MariaDeVito13 on X. 22. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit has rejected a challenge to Oklahoma’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, upholding a lower court’s action. Keep up with the latest in LGBTQ+ news and politics. Sign up for The Advocate's email newsletter. The appeals court relied on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti, a case involving a similar law in Tennessee. The high court ruled that states could ban this care for treatment of gender dysphoria in young people. In the Oklahoma case, a trial court had denied the plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction that would have blocked the ban’s enforcement while the case continued. The 10th Circuit waited to rule on the plaintiffs’ appeal until Skrmetti was decided. “Relying on Skrmetti, we affirm the district court’s preliminary injunction denial,” Judge Joel M. Carson III wrote for a three-judge panel of the 10th Circuit. Oklahoma passed the law banning this care in May 2023. Punishments for violation include felony charges against health care providers. Families with trans children and one health care professional sued to challenge the law, arguing that it violates their rights under Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. The lawsuit also alleges that the September 2022 decision to stop providing gender-affirming care to transgender adolescents at Oklahoma University hospitals to maintain access to COVID funding relief violated both the Equal Protection Clause and Section 1557. They are represented by Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU of Oklahoma. “Today’s ruling is a devastating outcome for transgender youth and their families across Oklahoma and another tragic result of the Supreme Court’s errant and harmful ruling in Skrmetti,” said a joint statement from the legal groups. “Oklahoma’s ban is openly discriminatory and provably harmful to the transgender youth of this state, putting political dogma above parents, their children, and their family doctors. While we and our clients consider our next steps, we want all transgender people and their families across Oklahoma to know we will never stop fighting for the future they deserve and their freedom to be themselves.” This article originally appeared on Advocate: BREAKING: Citing Skrmetti, appeals court rejects challenge to Oklahoma ban on gender-affirming care for youth View the full article
  23. The Gifford Fire has now scorched more than 96,000 acres of land in southern California. Officials say the blaze is on the brink of becoming a "megafire," the term used for wildfires exceeding 100,000 acres. Fueled by nearly triple-digit heat, bone-dry conditions and inaccessible terrain, the fire has exploded in size since igniting along Highway 166 less than a week ago. On Thursday, evacuation orders were expanded westward, bringing the total evacuation zone to 800 square miles across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. More than 870 remote homes and other structures near the northern edge of Los Padres National Forest remain under threat as flames race through rugged canyons, ranches, and forestland. “We have hot weather, and we have low relative humidity,” Santa Barbara County Fire Dept. Capt. Scott Safechuck told the Associated Press. “So we expect extreme fire behavior.” The National Weather Service warned that wildfire risk will intensify through the weekend as conditions worsen. Inland temperatures are expected to soar above 100°F, especially in the Sacramento Valley. The Gifford Fire has already overtaken July’s Madre Fire, which was previously the state’s largest of the year. The blaze began as at least four smaller fires along State Route 166 before merging into one inferno that has forced road closures and choked parts of southwest California with thick smoke. More than 2,200 personnel are battling the fire, which remains difficult to access due to steep terrain and remote locations. Winds are expected to stay relatively calm, offering some hope for containment, but fire officials say conditions remain extremely volatile. Residents near the evacuation zones are urged to stay alert, monitor official updates, and be prepared to leave quickly if conditions change. Additional evacuation orders are possible if the fire continues to move. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Weather.com lead editor Jenn Jordan explores how weather and climate weave through our daily lives, shape our routines and leave lasting impacts on our communities. View the full article
  24. Considering A New Electric Car? You're Not Alone originally appeared on Autoblog. Although sales declined in June, demand is expected to surge. Here’s why.You might think that electric vehicle (EV) sales are sinking. After all, sales were down 1.4% in June, or a decline of 3.5% on a year-over-year basis. Then, there’s the fact that the federal EV tax credit, which totals $7,500 for new EVs and $4,000 for used EVs, is set to expire on September 30, 2025. This and other reversals in EV policy, including the halt of the unspent government funds for building EV charging stations and the repeal of government targets for EV market share by 2030, have led to the perception that EV demand is waning. Tesla vehicles parked in a lot after arriving at a port in Yokohama, JapanGetty“The year-over-year decline in Q2 was only the third decline on record, and a sign of a more mature market," said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, senior analyst at Cox Automotive. "With government-backed incentives set to end in September and economic pressures mounting, the second half of the year will be a critical test of EV demand." Despite June’s dip, EV market share rose to 8%, up from 6.9% in May. In the first half of 2025, dealers sold a record 607,089 EVs, representing a 1.5% year-over-year increase, according to Cox Automotive. “Q3 will likely be a record, followed by a collapse in Q4, as the electric vehicle market adjusts to its new reality,” Streaty said. Incentives are high, and so is inventoryThe dip in EV sales came as incentives have never been higher. Cox states that in June, average EV incentives reached an all-time high of 14.8% or nearly $8,500. That's more than twice the incentive level offered on conventionally-powered vehicles, with an average transaction price for a new EV of $56,910. However, the EV market's attractiveness is changing as Q3 begins, thanks to a stroke of the pen at the White House. On October 1, the government-sponsored tax breaks of up to $7,500 for eligible new EV sales will end. Additionally, the well-known "leasing loophole," which significantly increased the number of qualified sales, is also dead. This should contribute to a surge in EV sales during the next few weeks. Cox expects EV market share to expand to 8.5% by year’s end, down from the 10% share previously expected. 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning LariatFordStill, the threat of disappearing government EV subsidies should bring EV intenders off the bench and into dealer showrooms in an effort to beat the deadline. When they do, they will find a good choice of vehicles to choose from, if inventory numbers are any indication. Cox reports that the days’ supply of EVs rose 9.9% month over month in June to 125 days. While that remains 14.8% lower than the same period last year, it’s the third consecutive month that dealer EV inventory has outpaced internal combustion engine vehicle inventory by more than 30 days. A 60-day supply is considered ideal. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV 1LTChevroletAs a result, there are some tempting deals. The Chevrolet Equinox EV, which starts at $34,995, comes with 0% financing for 60 months. Add the federal tax credit, and it starts at $27,495 before options and destination charge. Or how about the Subaru Solterra EV, built by Toyota, which can be yours on a 24-month lease for $299 a month for 36 months with $299 down. Then there’s the Honda Prologue EV. Like the Chevy, it’s offered with 0% financing for 60 months, and is eligible for the full federal tax credit. 2026 Subaru SolterraSubaruUsed EVs are a different storyIn contrast, the used EV inventory, eligible for $4,000 federal tax credit, is tight at 41 days, 9.9% below year-ago levels and close to that of internal combustion engine vehicles. However, the days’ supply of used EVs varies depending on which model you’re considering. Tesla has the lowest days’ supply of EVs at just 33 days, while GMC has the most with a 74-day supply. The average listing price for a used EV in June was $36,046, up a slight 0.3% month-over-month and 3.6% year-over-year. 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUVGMCThe lack of used EVs comes down to a simple metric: affordability. Consider that 43% of used EVs sold boast a list price of less than $25,000. This includes the Tesla Model 3, averaging $22,998, and the Model Y, averaging $29,111, which top the used EV sales charts. Final thoughtsGiven that the Inflation Reduction Act's federal EV tax credit is scheduled to expire at the end of September, there will likely be a flurry of enticing EV offers in the coming months, providing buyers with a crucial opportunity. It also marks a market pivot point, one where demand will become market-driven rather than subsidy-driven. This makes the outlook favorable for more affordable EVs, such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Nissan Leaf. 2026 Nissan LeafNissanThat said, the outlook for Q4 is anyone’s guess. With government incentives disappearing and the impact of tariffs finally reaching consumers, it remains to be seen if the transition to a battery-electric future maintains its pace. Meanwhile, China will continue its push to electrify its own market as well as the rest of the world. Given that 3 million EVs were sold in China in the first half of 2025 as EV exports grew, the American market may become an outlier in the global automotive world. Considering A New Electric Car?
