  11. Ritvika Nagula, an engineer at Microsoft Azure, said these résumé tips helped her land four offers. Nagula said engineers should highlight individual projects and show their work on GitHub. See her full résumé below. This is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with Ritvika Nagula, a senior software engineer at Microsoft Azure. She's worked at the company since 2019. Her employment and job offers were confirmed by Business Insider. This story has been edited for length and clarity. I graduated around December 2018 and shortly after landed four job offers, including from Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, and a startup. I chose Microsoft and joined in April 2019. I was not just cold-applying, I was applying everywhere: on LinkedIn, on Indeed, I was going to direct company portals to apply from there. I was reaching out to people on LinkedIn who were at those companies, or if I was able to find out who the hiring manager for a particular role was. I tried to use all my networking skills to at least make sure that my résumé got through from the initial phase, when it's just recruiters or just some hiring manager going through papers without actually knowing you. While cold-applying isn't the most effective, if you have a strong résumé, it can eventually work out for you. For software engineers, at least from what I've seen throughout my career, the résumé is definitely the most important thing. The cover letter is almost always optional. So I took extra care to make my résumé stand out. Highlight your individual projects, including ones you did on the sideIf you have any internship experiences or previous work experience, that should be something that you highlight at the top of your résumé because that immediately makes it stand out, even if it was just three or four months. Some companies also take co-ops, and I was a co-op intern at a startup for seven months. That was at the top of my résumé. You also should list individual projects you have worked on. For every project that I had listed on my résumé, I made sure to highlight the programming languages and tools and how I used them. This helps in two ways. It helps somebody reading your résumé understand that you have this breadth of tools and languages that you have used, and then, within the project description, you go into two to three lines of detail to explain how you used those particular tools. You should have three kinds of projects: One would be a project you worked on in your internship. Another is going to be the projects that you did as part of your coursework, in grad school or undergrad. And then the third should be all the extra projects that you did on the side, which show that you're really passionate about becoming a software engineer. This would be something you did on your own time. Nobody gave you grades, and you didn't have to submit this at a particular time. No deadlines, no assessment. Just something that you did for yourself. One of these I included was a Facebook chatbot I made, which you could use to get information about books. So you would essentially be talking to a chatbot and asking, "What about this book?" And it would give you a quick summary. I built it using publicly available APIs from GoodReads. Show your work with GitHubFor software engineers, GitHub is like a substitute for a cover letter. It's something that everybody uses to maintain their code in, and you can have a private repository, or you can have a public repository. I leveraged it by keeping all the projects that I did as part of my coursework updated in my GitHub profile. I also made sure that I updated the code for all these tiny extracurricular projects that I had. Then I put my GitHub username on the résumé itself and hyperlinked to my actual GitHub portfolio page. That way, if a prospective hiring manager is going through your résumé, and let's say one of your projects catches their eye — if they want to go look at it, you are giving free and easy access to them right there. That automatically gives you an edge over somebody else who's just written, "worked on this chatbot for X and Y." Having the code out there in GitHub shows this website was actually coded by you, and you didn't use a website builder tool. This allows your work to speak for itself. It's not like you've just written down something on a résumé. When you put it out there on GitHub, it proves that you've actually done something about it. There are all these AI tools and AI agents now that can make your life a little easier, and vibe coding is definitely a phenomenon. But before you jump into that, it's always better to have a deeper understanding of the code that you're working with because there is only so much the AI agent is going to understand. 13. Over the weekend, I went to the Verizon store and saw a startling number of people buying a new iPhone 16. It took everything in me not to chime in with, "Are you sure you don't want to wait and see what Apple has planned for the iPhone 17?" With the anticipated launch of the iPhone 17 in September, it could be a good idea to hang tight and either purchase the new phone or get the iPhone 16 at a discounted price. Apple still hasn't confirmed the existence of the iPhone 17, and we don't have any official specs or features, but here's how it could compare to the iPhone 16, according to rumors and speculation. iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 17: Key rumored specs comparedWe still don't have any confirmed details about the iPhone 17 but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning and purported leaks from making the rounds. Speculation extends across the entire iPhone 17 lineup, from the Pro models to what could be a thinner "Air" version (which may be Apple's answer to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge). But I'm going to focus on the baseline iPhone 17. Screen differencesOne of the most highly anticipated changes could be that the iPhone 17 adds a 120Hz display, which would be very welcome. Currently, only the iPhone Pro models have that higher refresh rate, while the baseline and Plus models are stuck with a 60Hz display. Bumping that refresh rate could also prompt Apple to bring the always-on display to the baseline model, making it easier to quickly glance at the time and your notifications without waking your display. There's been some back-and-forth on whether the iPhone 17 will have a scratch-resistant, antireflective display. But the most recent reports suggest that feature will only be available on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, not the baseline iPhone 17 (or the Air). So there may not be major discrepancies between the iPhone 16 and 17 on that front. Camera differencesIt's possible the iPhone 17's selfie camera will get a bump to 24 megapixels, instead of the current 12 megapixels found in the iPhone 16's front-facing shooter. Megapixels aren't the only determining factor for good-quality photos but if it is an upgrade, that could make taking selfies or shooting videos for social media on the front-facing camera less of a compromise. There's also been some conversation about the camera bump on Apple's upcoming iPhone lineup. It's likely that only the Pro models' cameras will be nestled in a new, larger panel that stretches horizontally across the back of the phone (perhaps evoking the "Geordi Visor" on the Google Pixel 9) and that the baseline will maintain a similar camera arrangement to the iPhone 16. Only time will tell. Design differencesRumors suggest that like the iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 will have an aluminum frame. (In fact, it's possible that'll be the case for the entire lineup, apart from the iPhone 17 Air, which could have a titanium frame to make it lighter.) There have also been reports that the iPhone 17 will use a new compact "metalens" technology for the proximity sensor, which could reduce the size of the Face ID sensor and the Dynamic Island. That could give slightly more real estate to the top of the 17's display. Processor and RAMOne key element that could remain unchanged across both phones is the processor. The iPhone 17 is rumored to pack an A18 chip, just like the iPhone 16. With Apple's plans to expand its Apple Intelligence suite of AI capabilities, it's possible the iPhone 17 lineup could come with 12GB of RAM instead of the current 8GB -- or at least part of it could. In April, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models would sport 12GB of RAM but that Apple was still deciding whether to equip the baseline model with that higher amount too. In May, analyst Jeff Pu noted the baseline would remain at 8GB. We'll have to wait to see what Apple ultimately decides. Speaking of Apple Intelligence, a new AI-powered Adaptive Power feature arriving with iOS 26 can help conserve the battery by making "small performance adjustments," like "allowing some activities to take a little longer," according to Apple. The next iPhone is expected to arrive with the upcoming operating system onboard but you'll also be able to download iOS 26 on the iPhone 16, as well as some older iPhones, once it becomes available publicly. That should help to stretch your battery life on either device. Color optionsWhat's on the inside may be most important but people also want to know what fun colors the iPhone 17 could sport. Rumors suggest the upcoming device could come in black, blue, silver, purple and green. For comparison, the iPhone 16 is available in black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine. Everything we think we know about the iPhone 17 is still just speculation so we'll have to see what Apple unveils this fall. Should you buy an iPhone 16 now or wait for the iPhone 17?If you're in desperate need of a new phone and can't wait any longer, who am I to stop you? But if you can hang tight until September, when Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17, you can either score the flashy new device or get a discount on the iPhone 16. (In previous years, the company dropped the price on older models by about $100.) It's likely the changes between the iPhone 16 and 17 will be relatively modest. Apple tends to debut newer features on its Pro models before eventually rolling them out across the full lineup, like it did with the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. So any shiny new capabilities will likely land on its more premium phones first, such as the rumored antireflective display and redesigned cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro models. But perhaps the biggest changes could arrive next year with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, for which Apple is reportedly "preparing a major shake-up" of the phone's design, according to Bloomberg. That includes a (long-rumored) foldable version and a "bold new Pro model that makes more extensive use of glass." The iPhone 17 may not even be announced yet but it's never too early to be looking even further ahead. View the full article

  15. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will hire as many as 450 people to shore up the National Weather Service after deep cuts this spring raised concern about dangerous understaffing, the Trump administration confirmed Wednesday. NOAA was granted permission to fill critical positions at its weather arm, including openings for meteorologists, hydrologists and electronics technicians, Trump administration officials said. The hirings are part of an exemption to a freeze on federal hiring in place through at least Oct. 15. NOAA declined to comment further. The planned hiring was first reported by CNN. The Department of Government Efficiency has gutted NOAA and the National Weather Service, which are key for the nation's daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, climate monitoring and more. Hundreds of NOAA forecasters and other employees have been cut, and NWS offices around the country have had a number of vacancies. The administration has also weighed ending the sharing of satellite data that is key to effective storm tracking and stopped tracking the cost of climate change-fueled weather disasters. Meteorologists and climate scientists have warned of consequences with fewer workers in positions that are crucial, especially as the hurricane season got underway. After deadly flash flooding that killed dozens of people in Texas last month, some local officials and Democrats suggested that the deep staffing cuts may have contributed to endangering lives, though others defended the agency's work. Experts cautiously applauded the exemption for hirings as positive news. “While this new development is great news for the NWS and the American public, I would like to see that the hiring actions are actually underway,” said Louis Uccellini, former NOAA administrator for weather services and NWS director. The hirings are said to include the “mission-critical field positions” that the agency announced it would hire for in June “to further stabilize front line operations." The agency did not say at the time how many roles would be filled. ___ Alexa St. John is an Associated Press climate reporter. Follow her on X: @alexa_stjohn. 21. Fire tears through auto repair shop, home in Washington CountyFirefighters battled a fire at an auto repair shop and home in Washington County Thursday morning. Officials said the call for the fire at Horne’s Auto Service on Route 980 in Cecil Township came in around 5:30 a.m. Cecil Fire Chief Ted Wolford said crews were on the scene within five minutes. Viewer video sent to Channel 11 shows flames engulfing the building shortly after the fire broke out. Wolford said two people were inside and got out safely. A neighbor saw the flames and ran over to help get everyone out, including pets. “Compared to what I did, the real heroes are the first responders,” said Kenny Chwilka. Chief Wolford said that with a site like an auto shop with unknown fluids, extra precautions were taken. “Washington County’s Hazmat team is here, they are protecting all of the drains and waterways with padding with what we call a boom, just to make sure no more of those fluids get into the drains,” Wolford said/ Absorbent booms are barriers filled with absorbent material that can be used to absorb dangerous chemicals. 22. PlayMonster games has bought Taco vs. Burrito for an undisclosed amount. The game was invented by a 7-year old, who, with his parents’ help, has steer it to over 1.5 million sold units. Creator Alex Butler says, despite its success, “It was never something that I’ve been attached to or anything.” Alex Butler was just seven years old when he made his first million dollars. A game he had invented, called Taco vs Burrito, had made it to Amazon—and by the end of 2018, it had rung up sales of about $1.1 million. Now, after overseeing the game’s empire with his parents, Butler has sold the rights to the game to PlayMonster, whose other well-known products include Spirograph, Farkle, and Yeti in my Spaghetti. Terms of the deal were not announced, but Taco vs. Burrito (which retails for $20 on Amazon) has sold 1.5 million copies life to date. The game also has two expansion packs. PlayMonster says it will continue to expand the game and a version in a collector’s tin is coming later this year. Butler, who is now 15, says he’s not especially sad to see his creation move on. It was, he says, never really something he wanted to keep doing for the rest of his life. “It was never something that I’ve been attached to or anything,” he told The Seattle Times. “It’s not super important to me. I just kind of wanted to get the most money out of it.” Alex’s mother is an entrepreneur herself, so when her son came up with the idea after playing card games like Exploding Kittens, she encouraged him. The family would walk to the neighborhood coffee shop/hangout to test the prototype, which would lead to Alex coming up with a new take on the rules. To cover production costs, he mother launched an online fundraiser, which brought in $25,000. Alex’s parents set up a holding company for the game (of which Alex was the majority owner), found a manufacturer, and put the game on Amazon. It quickly took off and never slowed down. While there have been buyout offers in the past, the family said they never felt right. When they began speaking with PlayMonster, things did. Don’t expect another game anytime soon from Alex, though. His interests have shifted to music production, sports, and video games, he says.
