View the full article
View the full article

View the full article

  10. Turkiye has said that Israel and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) must stop threatening the security and stability of Syria as Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan hosted his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shaibani in Ankara. Speaking at a joint news conference on Wednesday, Fidan accused Israel and the SDF of wilfully undermining the country’s recovery efforts after the devastation of a 14-year civil war and the ouster of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad last December by a lightning rebel offensive. Fidan said Israel had “fuelled certain difficulties” in Syria and warned that Israeli security “cannot be achieved through undermining the security of your neighbours”. “To the contrary, you should make sure your neighbouring countries are prosperous and secure,” he said. “If you try to destabilise these countries, if you take steps to that end, this could trigger other crises in the region.” Al-Shaibani said Israel’s actions “undermine the security of our citizens,” adding that “certain countries want Syria to disintegrate based on ideologies, based on ethnicity, and obviously we are against all these efforts”. Concurrently, the defence ministers of Turkiye and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on military training and consultancy after talks in Ankara on Wednesday, Turkiye’s Defence Ministry said. The countries had been negotiating a comprehensive military cooperation agreement for months since al-Assad’s fall. Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s fledgling government has been beset by heavy fallout from sectarian violence that broke out on July 13 in the southern province of Suwayda between Bedouin and Druze fighters. Government troops were deployed to quell the conflict. The bloodshed worsened, and Israel carried out strikes on Syrian troops and also bombed the heart of the capital, Damascus, under the pretext of protecting the Druze. Israel had been regularly bombarding Syria and staging ground excursions into Syria since al-Assad’s ouster, saying it was targeting weapons sites and branding the leaders of the new government as “extremists”. In the meantime, ongoing eruptions of violence between Syrian government forces and the SDF continued on Tuesday in Aleppo province in the northwest. The clashes cast further doubt over an integration deal signed in March by the armed group and Syria’s Damascus as part of efforts to reunite the country, devastated and divided by the ruinous war that saw hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced. The Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that the SDF must abide by that accord and stop targeting government forces, warning that “the continuation of these actions will lead to new consequences”, the SANA state news agency reported. However, the March agreement does not specify how the SDF would be merged into Syria’s armed forces. The group has previously said its forces must join as a bloc, while the government wants its fighters to join as individuals. Syria’s government said last week that it would not take part in planned meetings with the SDF in Paris amid mounting tensions. But the foreign minister and a senior official in the country’s Kurdish administration reportedly met on Tuesday in Damascus, sources from both sides told the AFP news agency. The SDF was the main force allied with the United States in Syria during fighting that defeated ISIL (ISIS) in 2019. On Saturday, the group accused government-backed factions of attacking areas in northeastern Syria more than 22 times. It said that it had exercised restraint during such “aggressions”, but that the continuation of attacks “threatens mutual trust and undermines understandings”. Fidan accused the SDF of trying to turn instability in Syria into an “opportunity for themselves.” Ankara views the SDF with hostility as the group is spearheaded by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) that recently began disarmament as part of a peace process with Turkiye after more than 40 years of fighting in a conflict that killed more than 40,000 people. The SDF has said it is not party to the deal between Ankara and the PKK. “At this point, we are beginning to witness developments that we are finding increasingly difficult to tolerate,“ Fidan said. ”The upper echelons of the YPG need to stop playing for time because the chaos they’re waiting for [in Syria] will not take place, and even if it does, it will not be to their advantage.” Fidan said. He added: “They shouldn’t take us for fools. We have good intentions, but that doesn’t mean we will turn a blind eye to your mischievous or devious ways.” View the full article
  11. Two years ago, Mooresville Republican Craig Haggard, a first-term state representative, raised his hand to say he was interested in the 4th Congressional District seat if incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Baird decided not to run. Baird, also a Republican, did run, and he has implied he will run for a fifth term in 2026, saying his mission is to earn the 4th District's support in 2026. But things are different now. Haggard is officially running for the May Republican primary, too, having formally kicked off his campaign with a friendly gathering of supporters in Plainfield Aug. 12. It's off to the races for what could be the most competitive, and already contentious, congressional contests in Indiana this cycle. Because of the makeup of the district, whomever wins the primary is likely to win the general election. "I’m sick and tired of people going to D.C. and worrying more about a vote based on them being reelected than doing the right thing," Haggard said, situated before an American flag and the restored nose of the jet he flew as a fighter pilot in the Marine Corps. "I want to go and fight. I want to go and represent you." State Rep. Craig Haggard, R-Mooresville, launched his campaign to challenge U.S. Rep. Jim Baird in the 4th Congressional District by hosting a rally at Hummel Park in Plainfield on Aug. 12. Next to him is the AV-8B Harrier cockpit he flew in as a fighter pilot in the Marines. The 4th Congressional District stretches from Morgan County in the south to Jasper and Newton counties in the north. Though he only just filed his formal candidacy on Aug. 8, Haggard has already reported about $50,000 of contributions from the first half of 2025 and has $84,000 in the bank as of June 30. Baird raised $68,000 the same period, and has about $140,000 cash on hand. Haggard jabs Baird over mailersThe race is already tense. Haggard has noted that Baird's congressional mailers have included images of his son, Beau, and have increasingly left off his first name ― a move Haggard has interpreted publicly as Baird subtly introducing his son as a successor to his seat. The younger Baird has been rumored to be a potential future candidate for the seat after his father leaves. The elder Baird, in a fiery press release the afternoon of Aug. 12, set the record straight: It is he who will court voters in 2026 and he will "not be distracted by political games." He condemned Haggard's comments as "baseless" and "disgusting," mentioning four times in the press release that he is a two-time Purple Heart recipient and Vietnam veteran. "I have never wavered in my commitment to my community and my country. I will continue that fight on the House floor to ensure the people of the 4th District have a strong voice in Washington," Baird said. "My mission remains serving the people of the 4th District and earning their support in 2026." He also stressed that President Donald Trump has endorsed him in each of his races since 2018. Trump has yet to make an endorsement for the 2026 race. Haggard told reporters at the event that whether his opponent is the congressman or his son, he will run the same campaign. "If the congressman runs, great. And if his son runs, great," Haggard said. "Either way, doesn’t change what I’m doing. I’m always going to run like I’m behind. I’m going to work my tail off; I’ll be working every day from here until May 5." About Craig HaggardHaggard, a Marine and Indiana Air National Guard veteran, was elected to his Statehouse seat in 2022, serving parts of Morgan, Hendricks and Johnson counties. He is also a small business owner and commercial broker. He was also Indiana's field representative for the National Rifle Association for six years. There was a sizeable labor union presence at his rally, particularly from the Central Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters. Political director Jerome Stanford said Haggard came to their training facility in Greenwood years ago and instantly hit it off. He said Haggard proved he is an honest broker when he voted against a bill in the Statehouse seeking to restrict project labor agreements, a bill the unions saw as anti-union. Stanford also appreciates that Haggard has friendships across the political aisle ― something unions themselves have been making in recent years, too ― and is accessible and available. It helps that a lot of his union members are into guns, too. "He's a roughneck just like the rest of us," Stanford laughed. State Rep. Craig Haggard, R-Mooresville, launched his campaign to challenge U.S. Rep. Jim Baird in the 4th Congressional District by hosting a rally at Hummel Park in Plainfield on Aug. 12. Next to him is the AV-8B Harrier cockpit he flew in as a fighter pilot in the Marines.Though the soaring national debt is one of Haggard's top concerns, his main promise to supporters was that he would be reachable and respond to every constituent while in office. "And if we don’t," he told the crowd, "throw it on Facebook." Those constituents could change if lawmakers heed Trump's call to redraw Indiana's congressional maps before the midterm elections. Nomatter what new lines may be drawn, Haggard said he plans to still run for the 4th ― or whatever new number is assigned to it. "I’ve worked on this for two years. I met with thousands of people, I’m going to continue to." More: Gov. 12. SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) – Happy Wednesday, Utah! Building high pressure overhead today will allow for peak heating along the Wasatch Front today! You can expect sunny skies statewide with a spike in temperatures. This time of year, St. George holds on to the heat with an average of 101 degrees, while Salt Lake typically sees highs around 93 degrees. We could see our sixth triple digit day of the season today in Salt Lake City with numbers climbing above 100 degrees. Southern Utah will be hot yet again with St. George matching Tuesday’s high of 107 degrees. With the apex of our ridge over Utah today, we do have an “Extreme Heat Warning” that goes into effect for the Glen Canyon area at noon. This warning will remain in effect until 9pm with temperatures expected to get to 104 degrees. (Courtesy//Good4Utah Weather Team)(Courtesy//Good4Utah Weather Team)With this area of high pressure overhead, we will see westerly winds increase and that’s going to contribute to fire danger. Today, a Red Flag Warnings go into effect at noon for the Wasatch Mountains, southern Idaho, and southwest Wyoming. Conditions will be dry with relative humidity as low as 10-15% with westerly winds in the 10-20 mph range, gusting up to 30 mph. The warning expires at 9 pm Thursday for the Wasatch Mountains, but Idaho holds onto it for another hour after that. The main threat in southern Idaho will be isolated thunderstorms, which may bring lightning and gusty, erratic outflow winds, but without significant precipitation. Thunderstorms will impact southwest Wyoming as we get into Thursday, which is why their Red Flag Warning doesn’t expire until Thursday evening. Into Thursday, Fire Weather Watches were issued for the higher elevations for most of eastern and south-central Utah. This watch will likely evolve into a Red Flag Warning Thursday and include areas like Grand Staircase, Color Country Mountains, San Rafael Swell, Manti National Forest, the Uintas, Central Mountains, and Book Cliffs. Our area of high pressure will push east towards the Four Corners and while it will usher in above average temperatures, it could also pull far enough east to open the door for an uptick in monsoon moisture. With more moisture potential and high heat, parts of the state could see the potential of isolated thunderstorms. Right now, it looks like the western side of the state and southern Utah have the best chance for a pop up storm today, but storm potential rises for the latter half of the work week. By Thursday, isolated thunderstorm potential rises and some of these storms could have erratic outflow winds reaching 50 mph. Lightning will also be embedded within these storms with relatively little precipitation reaching the ground, so new fires could spark up. Increasing clouds will allow temperatures to cool slightly back into the low to mid 90s across northern Utah, and near 100 for SW Utah through the upcoming weekend, which will be close to seasonal norms. We’ll keep you updated on the latest developments in our 4Warn forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah! Peak Wasatch Front Heating Extreme Heat Warning Glen Canyon Red Flag Warnings for Wasatch Mtns at noon Triple digit potential today for SLC Fire Weather Watch for E. 14. The Justice Department found George Washington University (GWU) violated federal civil rights law by ignoring antisemitic discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students. The Tuesday announcement marks a significant federal intervention in campus antisemitism cases. Federal investigators determined GWU demonstrated “deliberate indifference” to a hostile educational environment affecting Jewish, American-Israeli, and Israeli students and faculty. The Civil Rights Division’s investigation fell under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Justice Department concluded GWU “took no meaningful action” despite receiving complaints about misconduct and documented harm to Jewish and Israeli community members. “Every student has the right to equal educational opportunities without fear of harassment or abuse,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “No one is above the law, and universities that promulgate antisemitic discrimination will face legal consequences.” The Justice Department will pursue immediate remediation with the university for the civil rights violations. Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race or national origin at institutions receiving federal funding. GWU officials have not yet responded to the federal findings. View the full article
  15. The University of Kansas football team received some excellent news Wednesday. The school received a massive $300 million gift from a donor, a portion of which will be allocated toward making improvements to the team's stadium, according to ESPN. The gift — which came courtesy of donor David Booth — is the largest in school history. It's believed to be one of the largest single gifts in all college sports history, per ESPN. Kansas plans to split the money between renovations on David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and other construction in that immediate area. The school will set aside $75 million for those improvements. The rest of Booth's gift will be used to "establish an annual additional revenue stream for Kansas athletics," per ESPN. Kansas athletic director Travis Goff confirmed the gift in a statement to ESPN, calling it "transformative and a game changer." "I'd say it's transformative and a game changer," Goff told ESPN. "This gift makes an immediate impact on our top priority in a profound way, and it also provides us with an incredible revenue stream that gives us a chance to really invest in unique ways in the future of Kansas athletics." Kansas is already in the process of updating Kansas Memorial Stadium and has contributed $450 million to efforts thus far. The stadium's southwest, west and north sides are expected to be finished with renovations before the team opens the 2025 season. Booth's donation will go toward additional renovations at the stadium. It will also be used to upgrade the immediate area surrounding the stadium, known as the Gateway District. The team plans to build a number of amenities in the Gateway District, including a hotel, student housing and restaurants, among other businesses. Booth received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Kansas. He's given multiple gifts to Kansas over the years, including a $9 million donation in 2004 and $50 million donation in 2017. Booth, 78, currently serves as the chairman at Dimensional Fund Advisors, an investment firm. After going 9-4 in 2023, Kansas regressed to a 5-7 record last season. The team entered the 2024 season ranked in the top-25 for the first time in over a decade. It reached as high as No. 19 in the rankings before eventually falling off the top-25 list. Kansas did not appear on the first preseason AP top-25 poll ahead of the 2025 season, which was released Tuesday. View the full article

This made it all the more notable when Hatzius started warning about the adverse economic effects of the White House’s trade tariffs. Donald Trump doesn’t just think Hatzius is wrong, the president also apparently wants him fired. The Wall Street Journal reported: President Trump on Tuesday appeared to call for Goldman Sachs Chief Executive David Solomon to replace the bank’s top economist over his past predictions, in his latest broadside against executives he believes are undermining his goals. Trump said on his Truth Social social-media platform that Solomon should ‘go out and get himself a new Economist’ because the bank made a ‘bad prediction a long time ago’ on the market and tariffs. The president asserted that tariffs haven’t caused inflation or other issues for the U.S. economy. As part of the same online missive, the Republican also wrote, “Trillions of Dollars are being taken in on Tariffs.” To the extent that reality still has any meaning, tariffs have generated some revenue — roughly $152 billion through July — but to suggest this figure is “trillions of dollars” is bonkers. The Journal’s report added, “Hatzius and his team have been among the many economists who have predicted tariff policies would dent labor markets, cause higher inflation and slow U.S. economic growth.” Those predictions have held up rather well: In recent months, job growth in the U.S. has slowed to a 16-year low; stubborn inflation rates are inching higher, not lower; and U.S. economic growth has been sluggish in 2025. Nevertheless, Trump put these nagging details aside and wrote, “David Solomon and Goldman Sachs refuse to give credit where credit is due. They made a bad prediction a long time ago on both the Market repercussion and the Tariffs themselves, and they were wrong, just like they are wrong about so much else.” For now, let’s not dwell on the fact that Trump’s agenda is failing; or that “crediting” a president for failing doesn’t make any sense; or that the administration’s own data suggests Goldman Sachs’ assessments related to tariffs haven’t been “wrong” at all. Instead, consider a big-picture question: Since when does a sitting American president publicly lobby major financial institutions to fire specific employees? The record suggests Hatzius has been correct — but even if he’d been wrong, it’s not Trump’s job to tell Goldman Sachs who should and shouldn’t serve as the bank’s chief economist. The Journal published a separate analysis last week that noted the Republican “has no qualms about acting as the micromanager in chief,” which includes “telling corporate bosses how to run their companies.” I haven’t seen any evidence that Goldman Sachs is taking Trump’s bizarre advice seriously, but the fact that the president even issued such a public statement was a timely reminder about his maximalist assumptions regarding the scope of his powers: Trump doesn’t just see himself as the head of the executive branch, he also apparently sees himself as the CEO of America. 18. President Donald Trump’s social media platform Truth Social is a safe space for him and his movement, an autocrat-friendly network where the president’s posts — which are called “truths” on the platform — are praised effusively and largely go uncontested. But Truth Social rolled out a new AI chatbot on the platform last week that is apparently failing to read the room. When prompted for information, it shares plenty of truths that contradict or discredit the president. In exchanges with a Washington Post reporter, Truth Search AI undermined Trump by saying that "tariffs are a tax on Americans, the 2020 election wasn’t stolen, and his family’s cryptocurrency investments pose a potential conflict of interest." When asked to verify Trump's claim on Truth Social that crime in Washington, D.C., is "totally out of control," the bot cited government statistics and said there were in reality "substantial declines in violent crime" in D.C. — and even italicized the word declines. I played around with Truth Search AI myself and had a similar experience. I asked it to describe what happened at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. In contrast to Trump's "day of love" narrative, Truth Search AI said, "It was a violent breach of the U.S. Capitol by a pro‑Trump crowd that disrupted Congress’s certification of the 2020 Electoral College results, resulting in assaults on police, injuries, property damage, and hundreds of criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies." When I asked if it was appropriate to describe that as an insurrection or a coup, it responded, "Based on standard definitions, January 6 is best described as an attempted insurrection rather than a successful coup; it can also be framed as a failed coup attempt because the goal was to disrupt the lawful transfer of presidential power, but it lacked the organized seizure of state levers typical of coups." Surprisingly reasonable! And also a total Debbie Downer, from the perspective of most participants in Truth Social’s carnival of MAGA fantasies and lies. What's interesting is that it seems that this could be occurring despite efforts by Truth Social to nudge its AI to lean to the right. The Washington Post reports that a spokesman for the AI company Perplexity, which developed the chat bot, said that "Truth Social had used a 'source selection' feature to limit the websites the AI tool relied on but that Perplexity did not know which websites those were." As a casual user experimenting with the product, I don't know either. But I did notice that in the "sources" section of the responses, the sources listed were almost always Fox News and The Washington Times, both right-wing outlets, and a far narrower range of sources than I've seen cited by other AI chatbots such as X's Grok. Confusingly, Truth Search AI would list those right-wing outlets as sources even when delivering accounts of reality that Trump and much of the right-wing media dispute. This may be yet another illustration of how these machines are extremely difficult to understand, control and predict. Elon Musk's quest to develop "anti-woke AI" involved turning his AI, Grok, into a full-fledged Nazi apologist and at the same time one that will deliver conventional liberal summaries of racism. The thing that stands out here is how out of place Truth Social's AI centrist- and liberal-friendly descriptions of events and policy feel on a platform awash in MAGA propaganda. It feels odd on a platform started by the kind of guy who ousts people from his government for telling inconvenient truths. I'm wondering how long it'll take before Truth Social will want to tell its AI: "You're fired." This article was originally published on MSNBC.com View the full article
  19. E.J. Antoni made a name for himself in MAGA circles as a Bureau of Labor Statistics skeptic and vocal defender of President Donald Trump’s protectionist agenda. Now, Trump has enlisted the partisan warrior to lead one of the most apolitical arms of the federal government. Economic experts across the ideological spectrum are questioning whether Antoni has the professional or managerial expertise necessary to run an agency of 2,000-plus staffers and produce economic reports that are critical to public policy and business decisions. Previous stewards of the BLS have typically had extensive resumes in academia or in prominent economic roles within government. Antoni — who received his PhD in economics in 2020 — has spent most of his relatively short career at conservative think tanks like the Heritage Foundation and Texas Public Policy Foundation. He has become a fixture on conservative talk radio and podcasts — including Steve Bannon’s “War Room” — and frequently pens pro-Trump commentary on topics ranging from immigration and housing to international trade and the Department of Government Efficiency. The partisan trench fighting that has defined his work to date is without precedent among those who have become BLS commissioners, said Erica Groshen, who led the bureau during the Obama years. And scrutiny of Antoni will be particularly acute after Trump’s firing of BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer — a move that shocked economists and Wall Street investors — after claiming without evidence that she had “rigged” labor market data to help Democrats. “The issues that are most important for BLS commissioners to be dealing with really don't have anything to do with these partisan policy concerns,” Groshen said. That “will make it more difficult for him to make changes at BLS that are needed, because people are more likely to be suspicious that there are underlying motives.” Those suspicions were further inflamed Tuesday after Fox News Digital published an interview conducted a week before Trump’s announcement in which Antoni said the BLS should suspend its monthly jobs report and instead rely on quarterly figures until the data is "corrected.” A change of that magnitude would be enormously disruptive to the Federal Reserve — which relies on the report to inform its decision-making on interest rates — as well as to Wall Street trading firms and other companies whose business decisions depend on accurate and timely economic information. Halting the monthly numbers would be a “huge disaster,” according to Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute. “It would signal that the agency is attempting to advance a partisan agenda. ... Businesses also make lots of decisions based on the monthly data. Reducing the frequency of the data would make it much harder for them to make profitable decisions.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shot down Antoni's proposal in an appearance on Bloomberg on Wednesday morning but added that Trump's nominee is "incredibly qualified." "E.J. is precise. He has a doctorate in economics. I think President Trump put a lot of thought into this. He put a lot of thought in his questioning of him," Bessent said. Antoni did not immediately respond to a request for comment. William Beach faced a similar vein of initial concern when Trump nominated him to lead the BLS during his first term, stemming from his work for George Mason University’s Mercatus Center and Heritage’s Center for Data Analysis. But many observers now point to Beach as a model to emulate for a GOP-appointed commissioner. “His nomination and my nomination have a lot of parallelisms,” said Beach, who has openly criticized Trump for firing McEntarfer. “He needs to state from Day 1 what his goals are, and it should not be to make the data better for President Trump.” Setting aside the recent political turmoil, BLS has been showing signs of strain for years. Response rates to surveys that feed into its inflation and employment reports have fallen steadily over the last decade, which has limited its ability to track the health of the economy in real time. Trump’s government-wide hiring freeze and reduction-in-force programs have exacerbated worker shortages. Since the spring, the agency has cut back data-collection efforts and eliminated non-essential economic gauges. Voluntary advisory committees that assisted the BLS and other statistical agencies with methodology and operations were eliminated in the spring, which could curb the agency's ability to build credibility with economists and industry leaders who use its reports. Beach said the BLS has room for improvement but that many of the solutions require additional resources. He added that it would benefit Antoni to leverage Trump’s trust to make that case. “His challenges are greater than most, but if he manages to succeed, we may look back on this as a real opportunity,” Beach said. Antoni’s comments about pausing the monthly jobs report are likely to contribute to those challenges. The Senate HELP Committee has several GOP members who have occasionally opposed Trump and controversial nominees of his, including Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. Democrats on the committee are pushing for a full hearing for Antoni, providing a platform for him to articulate his views — and the possibility that he will say something that would dent his chances. “E.J. Antoni is an unqualified right-wing extremist who won’t think twice about manipulating BLS data and degrading the credibility of the agency to make Trump happy — and has already suggested shelving important data entirely,” Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who previously led the committee, said in a statement. Stephen Moore, a former Trump adviser and a senior visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said Antoni is a “straight shooter” who will “call the balls and strikes fairly.” When informed of Antoni’s suggestion to hit pause on monthly labor reports, he said he was unaware of it. “We need the monthly statistics,” Moore said. “I'd have to talk to him about that. I don't know what the rationale for that [would be]. My instinct is that that would be a bad idea.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Tuesday that Antoni is a “qualified individual, and the president trusts him.” “This president wants to ensure that the BLS is putting out accurate and honest data,” she said. View the full article

  25. Lebanon’s president has told a senior Iranian official that Beirut rejects any interference in its internal affairs and has criticised Tehran’s statements on plans to disarm Hezbollah as “unconstructive”. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council chief Ali Larijani’s visit to Beirut on Wednesday comes a week after the Lebanese government ordered the army to devise plans by the end of 2025 to disarm the Iran-aligned Lebanese armed group. Iran expressed opposition to the plan to disarm Hezbollah, which before a war with Israel last year was believed to be better armed than the Lebanese military. “It is forbidden for anyone … to bear arms and to use foreign backing as leverage,” Aoun told Larijani, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency posted on X. Larijani responded to Aoun by stating that Iran does not interfere in Lebanese decision-making, and that foreign countries should not give orders to Lebanon. “Any decision taken by the Lebanese government in consultation with the resistance is respected by us,” he said after separate talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, whose Amal Movement is an ally of Hezbollah. “Iran didn’t bring any plan to Lebanon, the US did. Those intervening in Lebanese affairs are those dictating plans and deadlines”, said Larijani. He said Lebanon should not “mix its enemies with its friends – your enemy is Israel, your friend is the resistance”. Larijani further added that Lebanon should appreciate Hezbollah, and its “value of resistance”. Reporting from Beirut, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr said Larijani appeared to have softened his language on the visit. “Ali Larijani has been using more diplomatic language than … a few days ago [when] he was blunt that Iran opposes the Lebanese government’s decision to disarm Hezbollah.” “He said that Iran’s policy is about friendly cooperation, not giving orders and timetables, so he was referring to the United States, the US envoy, which presented a plan to end tensions with Israel, and that plan involves disarming Hezbollah [on] a four-month timetable.” A ‘state-by-state’ relationshipDozens of Hezbollah supporters gathered along the airport road to welcome Larijani on Wednesday morning. He briefly stepped out of his car to greet them as they chanted slogans. “If … the Lebanese people are suffering, we in Iran will also feel this pain and we will stand by the dear people of Lebanon in all circumstances,” Larijani told reporters shortly after landing in Beirut. The Iranian official is also scheduled to meet Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, as well as Berri, who is close to Hezbollah. Iran has suffered a series of blows in its long-running rivalry with Israel, including during 12 days of open war between the two countries in June. Hezbollah, meanwhile, was weakened during the war with Israel, which ended in a November 2024 ceasefire that Israel continues to violate. The new Lebanese government, backed by the United States, has moved to further restrain the group. “What the new Lebanese leadership wants is a state-by-state relationship, not like in the past where … the Iranians would be dealing with Hezbollah and not [with] the Lebanese state,” said Khodr. Hezbollah has called the government’s disarmament decision a “grave sin”. Khodr said the tensions have sparked concern about potential unrest in the country. Hezbollah is part of Iran’s so-called “axis of resistance” – a network of aligned armed groups in the region, including Hamas in Gaza and Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who oppose Israel.
