Sen. John Cornyn (D-Texas) is asking the Justice Department (DOJ) to investigate groups —including former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-Texas) Powered by People — that have allegedly helped fund Texas Democrats who fled the state to stall a GOP mid-decade redistricting plan. “I write to encourage the Department of Justice to open an investigation into potential violations of federal law committed by the Political Action Committees and special interest groups providing funding and assistance to members of the Texas House of Representatives who absconded from the state and violated their duties to the citizens of Texas,” Cornyn wrote in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi. “I write today to encourage an investigation of the entities funding this charade. News reports make clear that PACs tied to Beto O’Rourke and megadonors such as George Soros are supporting the legislators, along with other campaign entities,” he continued. “These outside groups appear to be acting in violation of federal public corruption and election laws.” More than 50 Texas state legislators left the Lone Star State earlier this month to break quorum, depriving the state House of the numbers it needs to move forward with a redistricting plan backed by President Trump. The proposal, which passed through the state Senate on Tuesday, would net Republicans five additional House seats and has triggered redistricting talks in other states on both sides of the aisle ahead of the 2026 midterms. Cornyn in his letter called out O’Rourke, alleging that his political group funded “luxurious private jets” for the quorum-breaking lawmakers, along with food, lodging and logistical support from other groups. The latest move from the senator follows his recent call for the FBI to help track down quorum-breakers, comes as he seeks to fend off a conservative primary challenge from state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) in next year’s election. Recent polling has shown Cornyn trailing Paxton, in some cases by double digits, though his team is projecting optimism it will be able to fend off the challenge. Paxton has also swung at O’Rourke and his group, which he’s claimed engaged in unlawful fundraising activity to help the Democratic state lawmakers. He was granted a temporary restraining order last week and is now seeking O’Rourke’s arrest as he alleges the order was violated. Meanwhile, Texas Democrats are trying to wait out the ongoing 30-day special session as their absence puts a pause on advancing the new Congressional map, but Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has said he planned to call another immediately afterward. The venture comes with hefty expenses. In addition to the costs of living away from their homes in Texas, the participating Democrats each face $500-per-day fines, along with the threat of arrest and removal from their seats. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has pledged to redraw the Golden State’s congressional maps in a move that could counter Texas’s gains with five additional Democratic House seats, depending on whether Republicans move forward with redistricting. Former chief White House photographer Pete Souza jabbed at President Trump on Tuesday for moving the official portrait of former President Obama from the entryway of the White House to the top of the Grand Staircase. “According to CNN, the current occupant of the Oval Office has moved the portrait of President Obama from the Grand Foyer (where it should be) to that hidden area at the top of the Grand Staircase. Thus it cannot be seen publicly on White House tours and cannot be seen by the White House staff,” Souza, who was the White House photographer for former Presidents Reagan and Obama, wrote in a post on Instagram. “Why was this done? Was it because President Obama lives rent free in the current occupant’s head? I’d say that’s pretty petty,” the longtime photographer and frequent critic of Trump continued. “Or could there be another reason?” Obama’s portrait was moved to the top of the stairs, sitting above the portrait of former President Eisenhower, a White House official told The Hill on Monday. Apart from Obama’s, the portraits of former Presidents George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush have also been moved recently. The area where the portraits are now located is not accessible to the visitors. Obama’s portrait, by artist Robert McCurdy, was previously moved in April to a different area of the White House and replaced by a painting of Trump raising his fist after being shot in the assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pa., in July 2024. It is not uncommon for presidential portraits to be moved around within the White House as the new administration gets settled, but usually, more recent presidents’ portraits are given placement more visible to the public. “Some new artwork at the White House,” the White House wrote Monday in a social media post. Souza, in the Instagram post where he shared a photo of Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, coming down the Grand Staircase, said that during “President Obama’s administration, for instance, the portraits of Presidents Bush 43 and Clinton hung in the Grand Foyer.” “The portraits of President Bush 41, Reagan, Carter, Ford and Kennedy were hung along the Cross Hall,” he wrote. “(I never did figure out where Nixon went.) On the Grand Staircase, shown in this photo, were portraits of Eisenhower and Truman.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The Trump administration recently told the Supreme Court that a California judge’s order put law enforcement in a “straitjacket.” But plaintiffs who won that lower court order have urged the high court to keep it in place, arguing that lifting it would bless an “immigration dragnet” ensnaring millions of people in the Los Angeles area — including U.S. citizens — based on how they look and speak, and where they work and congregate. U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong issued the temporary restraining order against the government on July 11. The Biden appointee said the individuals and groups that sued, which include U.S. citizens, would likely succeed in proving that the government is “conducting roving patrols without reasonable suspicion and denying access to lawyers.” For now, she said, the government can’t rely solely on any combination of the following four factors to make stops: apparent race or ethnicity; speaking Spanish or accented English; presence at a particular location, like a day laborer pickup area; or one’s type of work. After a federal appeals court panel declined to intervene on the administration’s behalf, U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer turned to the Supreme Court for help in lifting the order, which he said “defies blackletter Fourth Amendment law, imposing a straitjacket on law-enforcement efforts that is inimical to the context- and case-specific totality-of-the-circumstances inquiry that this Court’s precedents demand.” Opposing emergency high court relief, the plaintiffs countered that the judge’s order “broke no new legal ground,” and that it “does not prevent the government from enforcing the immigration laws, conducting consensual encounters, or relying on any or all of the four factors along with other facts to form reasonable suspicion.” They further wrote that the administration’s “extraordinary claim that it can get very close to justifying a seizure of any Latino person in the Central District [of California] because of the asserted number of Latino people there who are not legally present is anathema to the Constitution.” The administration can file a final reply brief the justices, after which we will learn whether this will be the latest instance of the high court saving the administration from a lower court loss in President Donald Trump’s second term. The list of bad decisions from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is not short, but this was especially egregious: The conspiracy theorist, who has a lengthy record of promoting bizarre and unscientific ideas, announced that he and the Trump administration are terminating a series of federal contracts focused on developing mRNA vaccines. RFK Jr. also said he’s winding down additional federal investments in mRNA technology. The condemnations from the reality-based community quickly followed. Mike Osterholm, a University of Minnesota expert on infectious diseases and pandemic preparations, told The Associated Press: “I don’t think I’ve seen a more dangerous decision in public health in my 50 years in the business.” Around the same time, Dr. Jerome Adams, who served as the surgeon general during Donald Trump’s first term, added via social media: “I’ve tried to be objective & non-alarmist in response to current HHS actions — but quite frankly this move is going to cost lives.” The president tried to defend the decision, but failed. Kennedy tried, too, and he fared about as well. It was against this backdrop that Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Trump’s handpicked director of the National Institutes of Health, wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post making his best case. Bhattacharya, a deeply unfortunate choice to lead the NIH, conceded in his opinion piece that the mRNA platform is “promising,” and has the potential to “deliver breakthroughs.” So why in the world is the Republican administration, as Bhattacharya put it, “winding down its mRNA vaccine development activities”? His Post piece stressed a few points, but this was the heart of his defense: [A]s a vaccine intended for broad public use, especially during a public health emergency, the platform has failed a crucial test: earning public trust. No matter how elegant the science, a platform that lacks credibility among the people it seeks to protect cannot fulfill its public health mission. The NIH director bolstered his point by pointing to polls showing Americans’ reluctance to get Covid booster shots, which were developed through mRNA research, before peddling some baseless claims about the Biden administration’s “scientific overreach” and “arrogance.” So, let’s take stock. At issue is a game-changing and lifesaving scientific breakthrough. “To scientists who study it, mRNA is a miracle molecule,” The New York Times reported in May. “The vaccines that harnessed it against Covid saved an estimated 20 million lives, a rapid development that was recognized with a Nobel Prize.” The same Times report added that mRNA research has raised hopes of possible treatments — and perhaps even cures — for deadly cancers and a host of genetic and chronic diseases. Even Trump himself has celebrated mRNA vaccines — the president explicitly referred to them as a “modern-day miracle” — before he put the nation’s public health infrastructure in the hands of a guy who has claimed, among other things, that Wi-Fi causes “leaky brain.” But according to the NIH director, the scientific potential apparently doesn’t matter. The “miracle” apparently doesn’t matter. Even the number of Americans who might suffer as a direct result to the Trump administration’s cuts apparently doesn’t matter. What does matter, Bhattacharya argued, is that mRNA research hasn’t “earned public trust.” To be sure, I’m not in a position to say which areas of scientific research have been embraced by the American mainstream. I’m not even sure how many Americans are familiar with mRNA or its potential. I am confident, however, that major scientific powers don’t base research decisions on popularity contests. Most laypeople outside of the scientific community aren’t in a position to make qualified assessments about the merits of investing in specific technologies. On the contrary, most laypeople are susceptible to misinformation, disinformation and the kind of anti-science conspiracy theories touted by RFK Jr., which results in less knowledge and more confusion. What the general public needs, in other words, is a policy environment in which they put investment decisions like these in the hands of qualified and experienced scientific experts who prioritize the public’s well-being — the kind of experts who traditionally have worked at the NIH. If Bhattacharya hoped his op-ed would prove persuasive, he’s going to be disappointed. This article was originally published on MSNBC.com View the full article

President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested that he could avoid congressional approval to extend his 30-day federal takeover of Washington’s police, amid his efforts to wrest control of the capital’s law enforcement. Trump this week invoked the Home Rule Act, effectively handing the executive branch control over Washington’s police for up to 30 days. Beyond that, Trump would have to go through Congress for an extension authorization. But during his speech announcing the 2025 Kennedy Center honorees on Wednesday, Trump repeatedly floated circumventing Congress to maintain his hold over the city’s law enforcement. “If it's a national emergency we can do it without Congress, but we expect to be before Congress very quickly,” Trump said. Trump appeared to be banking on the support of congressional Republicans to push through any attempt to extend the 30 day takeover — but maintained that if lawmakers failed to approve the extension, he would go forward with the move on his own by declaring a national emergency. “I don't want to call a national emergency,” Trump said, before adding, “If I have to, I will.” Trump also announced that he was working with congressional Republicans to put forward a crime bill initially targeted at Washington but intended as a “beacon” for other Democratic cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. “We're going to need a crime bill that we're going to be putting in, and it's going to pertain initially to D.C.,” Trump said. “We're going to be asking for extensions on that, long-term extensions, because you can't have 30 days.” California already felt the repercussions of the Trump administration’s targeting earlier this summer, when the president deployed the National Guard to help quell protests against immigration detention sweeps in Los Angeles. Trump on Monday announced that he was taking control over Washington’s police force and deploying the National Guard to patrol the city’s streets. Citing a rise in violent crime — which local leaders have disputed, pointing to statistics showing the city hitting a 30-year low last year — Trump declared that Monday was “Liberation Day” for the city, and invoked a never-been-used statute of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act allowing the president to take control over the local police in cases of emergency. So far, D.C. leadership has been playing nice with the president, with Mayor Muriel Bowser calling the move “unsettling and unprecedented” — but still saying the city would comply with Trump’s order. The president on Wednesday added that he would be “going to Congress for a relatively small amount of money” to “fix up” the nation’s capital, including fixing potholes and getting rid of medians in the city’s roads. Asked about the prospect of D.C. statehood, which the city’s leaders have long pushed for without success, Trump called the efforts “ridiculous” and “unacceptable,” saying the overwhelmingly blue city would “pick up two senators, and that's not going to happen.” View the full article

View the full article

President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that Russia would face “very severe consequences” if he determines during Friday’s summit with Vladimir Putin that the Russian leader is still not serious about ending the war with Ukraine. Trump, who did not specify what those consequences might be, has been reluctant to increase economic sanctions or tariffs on Russia despite his mounting frustration with Putin’s intensifying attacks on Ukrainian cities, civilians and indifference to peace talks. Lowering expectations that the sit-down with Putin in Alaska would yield a breakthrough, Trump said that he’s hopeful this initial meeting could lead to another that includes Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and, potentially, Trump. “First, I’ll find out where we are,” Trump said. “If the first [meeting] goes okay, we'll have a quick second one. I would like to do it almost immediately.” But, the president cautioned, he won’t pursue a trilateral meeting if he doesn’t think Putin is acting in good faith. “There may be no second meeting because if I feel that it's not appropriate to have it because I didn't get the answers that we have to have, then we are not going to have a second meeting,” Trump said. Trump’s comments came during an appearance at the Kennedy Center and shortly after an hour-long call with European leaders, including Zelenskyy, in preparation for Friday’s summit. Trump described the call as “very good,” and several European leaders were quick to issue statements about the call Wednesday morning to underscore their alignment. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Trump “largely shares” Europe’s position on peace talks, and French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Trump is indeed pushing for a ceasefire, a top priority for Zelenskyy and NATO. Putin’s stubborn refusal to entertain Trump’s diplomatic entreaties so far has pushed the president into closer alignment with NATO allies and even Zelenskyy, who he dressed down in the Oval Office less than six months ago. Friday’s sit-down with Putin, who many analysts believe is likely to try to repair his personal relationship with Trump in a private meeting while convincing him that Ukraine shares the blame for the prolonged conflict, will put the president’s shifting convictions to a serious test. Even as he sought to put the onus on Putin to demonstrate new seriousness about ending the war, Trump downplayed expectations about his own ability to persuade the Russian president to do so. When asked whether he could convince Putin to “stop targeting civilians in Ukraine,” he demurred. “I guess the answer to that is probably no,” Trump said. View the full article

NEED TO KNOWRobert Plant is looking back on his decision not to attend Black Sabbath's "Back to the Beginning" farewell concert "I said, Tony, I’d love to come, but I can’t come," he recalled telling Tony Iommi, per Mojo The performance marked Ozzy Osbourne's final time on stage before his death on July 22 at age 76 Robert Plant is opening up about a fairly shocking "no" he recently gave Tony Iommi. The legendary Led Zeppelin member, 76, shared in a new interview with Mojo that he was asked to attend Black Sabbath's "Back to the Beginning" farewell concert, Ozzy Osbourne's final performance before his death, but declined Iommi's invitation at the time. “I said, Tony, I’d love to come, but I can’t come,” Plant recalled, according to the publication. “I just can’t. I’m not saying that I’d rather hang out with Peter Gabriel or Youssou N’Dour, but I don’t know anything about what’s going on in that world now, at all. I don’t decry it, I’ve got nothing against it. It’s just I found these other places that are so rich.” Elsewhere in the interview, Plant opened up more about his current perspective on gigging, which may have in part informed his decision to not attend a show as large as "Back to the Beginning," which drew in roughly 40,000 attendees in person, with another roughly 5 million watching via livestream — a performance that the award-winner seemingly alluded to as "doing the football stadium with some old mates." Jamie McCarthy/Getty; Ilya S. Savenok/Getty Robert Plant in March 2019; Ozzy Osbourne in December 2014“For me, because I’ve been from a very questionable Live Aid to the O2, to Obama and the White House and all those things, I was beatified. I felt the tug of doing this — Saving Grace needed just to move on up in glory, as Mavis [Staples] would say. We’ve got to be very careful now that we make sure it stays closer to Bert Jansch than Axl Rose,” the artist explained. He continued to note, "The gigs are small enough so that if nobody wants to go, it’s not the end of the world. And so, by having that laissez-faire, easy-going, whatever it’s called — suicidal! — attitude, instead of doing the football stadium with some old mates, there it was: we were free. We could mess about.” Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "Back to the Beginning" served as a de-facto send-off for Black Sabbath, drawing in contemporaries such as Mastodon, Rival Sons, Anthrax, Halestorm, Pantera, Tool, Slayer, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Gojira, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God, Yungblud and more, all of whom took the stage to honor the band largely credited with helping set the foundation for the metal genre as a whole. Just over two weeks after the July 5 performance, Osbourne died at 76 on July 22, with his cause of death later revealed as "out of hospital cardiac arrest" and "acute myocardial infarction," with coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease with autonomic dysfunction listed as "joint causes." The rocker's daughter, Aimee, submitted the death certificate at a registry in London. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," Osbourne's family told PEOPLE in a statement at the time. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time." Samir Hussein/WireImage Robert Plant in June 2022In a statement shared on X following Osbourne's passing, Plant wrote, "Farewell Ozzy … what a journey … sail on up there .. finally at peace .. you truly changed the planet of rock!" It seems as though one of Osbourne and Plant's last known interactions came about in 2016, and by hilarious mistaken circumstances at that. In an interview with Conan O'Brien at the time, Osbourne and his son, Jack, revealed that the singer accidentally texted Plant when his cat was missing. "He once accidentally sent Robert Plant a text message being like, 'I can't find the cat,'" he revealed, which elicited roaring laughter from Osbourne, O'Brien and the crowd. "I love Robert Plant playing in concert singing a Led Zeppelin tune getting a text from Ozzy, 'Buy more milk,'" O'Brien jested in response, prompting Osbourne to reply that Plant actually texted him back concerned, questioning "You can't find the cat?" LIMA (Reuters) -Peruvian President Dina Boluarte on Wednesday signed a law pardoning military and police officers accused of human rights abuses committed between 1980 and 2000, despite outcry from rights groups. In July, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) asked the Peruvian government not to pass the bill and to "make sure that victims can get justice." It also asked courts to not enforce the law. "With the enactment of this amnesty law, the Peruvian Government and Congress recognize the sacrifice of members of the Armed Forces, the Police and self-defense groups in the fight against terrorism," Boluarte said in a speech in Lima. "We're giving them back the dignity that should never have been questioned," she added. CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — A new feature on Instagram allowing users to share their location on the app is raising concerns with parents and public officials. Connecticut’s senior senator is calling it a safety hazard. New TikTok challenge puts classmates in danger, Connecticut fire officials say ”It may sound innocent and even useful,” U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said in a press conference at New Haven’s Boys and Girls Club about the map feature. ”It exposes kids to pedophiles and traffickers.” Instagram’s parent company, Meta, stresses that users have to opt in. They say the default setting is to have location sharing turned off. Blumenthal says that does not seem to be the case. ”We’ve received complaints from young people who are alarmed that their location has been shared without their consent,” he said. If you follow your kids on social media in order to keep track of what they’re posting, and you have not seen your kids share their location, they might still be doing it. That’s because there is a feature with this map that allows users to share their location with just certain friends, and you might not be among them. “If you have friends that share their location, it mostly would say ‘share with friends,'” 14 year-old Daeshia Freeman said. “But, I don’t know. I wouldn’t share my location on Instagram ever.” Blumenthal says he wrote Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg a personal letter. ”Saying that he should shut down this map menace. He should do it right away,” Blumenthal said. “Maybe go back to the drawing board, maybe there’s a way to have geolocation sharing that is safe.” Or, he says, one with functioning parental controls. ⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious Discover 10 fascinating facts about cars, from the first speeding ticket to the world's fastest police car, and more!Cars have been a part of our lives for over a century, and along the way, they’ve collected a treasure trove of unique history, quirky inventions, and surprising records. From technological breakthroughs to eye-popping feats of engineering, here are ten fascinating facts about cars that you may not know. The First Speeding Ticket Was for 8 MPH The very first speeding ticket was issued in 1896, to a motorist driving at just 8 mph—four times the legal limit of 2 mph! It's a reminder of how much both technology and speed limits have evolved since the early days of motoring. Cruise Control Invented by a Blind Engineer Ralph Teetor, who lost his sight at age five, was the brilliant inventor behind cruise control. Frustrated by his lawyer's inconsistent driving speeds, Teetor invented a system to maintain a steady pace, laying the foundation for future driving technologies. Windshield Wipers Invented by a Woman In 1903, Mary Anderson invented the first manual windshield wipers after noticing the dangers of driving in poor weather. Her innovation greatly improved visibility and safety for drivers, especially in rain or snow. Cars Spend 95% of Their Time Parked A staggering 95% of a car's life is spent stationary, either parked or idle. With only 5% of their time spent on the road, it's no wonder finding a secure place to park is so important! Formula 1 Cars Could Drive Upside Down Thanks to their aerodynamics, Formula 1 cars generate enough downforce to theoretically drive upside down in a tunnel at 120 mph. This remarkable engineering achievement highlights the extreme capabilities of race cars, though it’s best left in theory! World’s Fastest Car: Koenigsegg Gemera The Koenigsegg Gemera currently holds the record for the fastest production car, reaching speeds of up to 248 mph. Meanwhile, Tesla’s 2022 Model S Plaid leads in the electric car category with a top speed of 200 mph. The Largest Speeding Fine in History In Switzerland, speeding fines are income-based. One wealthy driver was hit with a fine of £180,000 (about $294,000) for driving 137 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Talk about an expensive speeding ticket! A Car Has Around 30,000 Parts The average car is made up of about 30,000 individual parts, from the engine to the tiniest screws. Each component is crucial for the car’s overall performance and safety. Driving to the Moon? Hypothetically, Yes If you could drive to the moon (and travel non-stop), it would take about six months to complete the journey. While purely hypothetical, it's fun to imagine the ultimate road trip vehicle for such a trek! Dubai Boasts the Fastest Police Cars Dubai’s police fleet includes the Bugatti Veyron, which can reach speeds of up to 253 mph. With supercars like this, Dubai holds the record for having the fastest police vehicles in the world. These fascinating facts highlight the rich history and technological advances of the automobile world, showing that cars are more than just machines—they’re a source of endless innovation and inspiration.
