At least 20 people have died in a shipwreck off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, and a United Nations agency says more refugees and migrants could be missing as search operations continue. Rescue services on Wednesday found 20 bodies, while 60 survivors, 56 men and four women, were brought ashore to Lampedusa, according to the Italian Red Cross and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The disaster, involving people travelling from Libya, was the latest to befall refugees and migrants making the perilous Mediterranean crossing from Africa to Europe. Rights groups and UN agencies have also documented systematic abuse against refugees and migrants in Libya, including torture, rape and extortion. In February, Libyan authorities uncovered nearly 50 bodies from two mass graves in the country’s southeastern desert, in the latest horror involving people seeking to make it to Europe through the North African country. Since the beginning of this year, 675 people have died in the central Mediterranean while trying to make the crossing, said Filippo Ungaro, a UNHCR spokesperson in Italy. An Italian law enforcement aircraft spotted a capsized boat with bodies in the water about 23km (14 miles) off Lampedusa on Wednesday morning, triggering a rescue operation, a source close to the matter told the Reuters news agency. The Reuters source said that based on initial accounts from the rescued people, they departed from the Tripoli area in Libya in the early morning aboard two boats. One of the boats began taking on water, and they transferred to the other vessel, which later capsized in rough waters. Initial UNHCR figures suggested that 92 to 97 people were in the group, indicating as many as 17 people were missing. Cristina Palma, who works for the Italian Red Cross in Lampedusa, said in a video statement that the survivors were in “decent” health, but four of them had been hospitalised for checks. Public updates on the company have been sporadic, with appearances in the headlines being few and far between. The last major Karma news arrived earlier this year when the California-based automaker previewed the Amaris, an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) luxury coupe. That reveal focused on the exterior, introducing a new iteration of the brand’s design language. Now, Karma is back in the spotlight for Monterey Car Week, revealing the Amaris’ interior for the first time. The car will be displayed at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and later on the Concept Lawn at Pebble Beach. Karma AutomotiveA First Look Inside the AmarisThe Amaris’ cabin adopts a driver-focused approach with a blend of modern technology and high-end materials. At the center of the experience is a square-ish tiller wrapped in exposed carbon fiber and equipped with capacitive touch controls. It sits ahead of a digital gauge cluster, while a low-mounted central infotainment screen manages primary functions. A secondary display faces the passenger, concealed until activated. The center console features a floating gear selector and a leather-covered ignition start button hidden beneath a hinged panel. The example for Monterey is a two-seat configuration finished in Crimson Orbit leather and suede. Carbon fiber and piano black accents are used extensively, from the center console to the rear support brace. Designers have sculpted the rear compartment to fit luggage. An electrochromatically adjustable glass roof spans the cabin, and “orbit” design elements visually separate driver and passenger zones. Karma claims a 0-60 mph time of under 3.4 seconds, a 165-mph electronically limited top speed, more than 100 miles of electric range, and over 400 miles combined range. This is quite the departure for the Bavarians, who have not always said nice things about off-roaders. The brand has even insisted it doesn’t sell SUVs but rather SAVs (sport activity vehicles) as if the word “utility” is beneath it. That’s why the revelation from an Automotive News report that BMW wants to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, or at least those who like the aesthetic, is so shocking to so many. Perhaps the automaker has been looking at its rival’s success with the G-Wagon and thought it could make something better? It sounds like whatever is being cooked up is still in the conceptual phase, because the report says production won’t start until 2029. A report from BMW Blog claims the future Bimmer will be boxy, large, and contain three rows of seating. It could be offered as a gas-only model, hybrid, or EV. What makes us wonder if this new BMW off-roader will be the real deal is the claim it will use a modified version of the X5’s platform. One of the things that’s made the G-Wagon so beloved is the fact it’s unabashedly a truck. That’s right, with a body-on-frame construction, plus a ladder frame, high ground clearance, and three locking differentials, it’s no pushover on the trail. Sure, most reside at luxury malls and the Starbucks drive-through, but the SUV is still wondrously capable. Will BMW’s rival, which reportedly has the internal code G74, be similarly capable? If it truly will use the same platform as the X5, we fear the answer will be a resounding no. But will people care? Miceli of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Erie is accused of falsifying raffle results, inventing names for multiple prize winners, and moving the grand prize money into a separate account. The 2024 raffle, which sold $50 tickets, was designed to raise as much as $500,000 for the parish. The grand prize was an Amplify Orange 2024 Corvette Convertible 1LT or a $50,000 payout. Smaller “12 Days of Christmas” prizes, worth $500 each, were also offered in the lead-up to the Dec. 24 drawing. Officials say the winning four-digit ticket number was matched to a man identified by Miceli as “Martin Anderson of Detroit,” who allegedly chose the cash option. Investigators now allege that Anderson does not exist and never purchased a ticket. 12 Secret Products Serious Collectors Swear By Court documents further claim Miceli admitted to making up the names of at least four $500 prize winners, reportedly choosing friends or favored parishioners when no actual winners were tied to the drawn numbers. A spokesperson from Ineos Automotive confirmed to Road & Track that the owner of the F40 walked into the dealership and requested that he trade his supercar on an SUV. The salesperson—quite possibly assuming this to be something from the automotive equivalent of Impractical Jokers—in turn spoke to the dealer principal. ORLANDO, Fla. — Tropical Storm Erin on Wednesday continued to push west through the Atlantic with it forecast to become the season’s first hurricane, growing to major hurricane strength by Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of the NHC’s 11 a.m. Eastern time update, the center of Erin was located about 1,300 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands of the Caribbean moving west at 17 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Tropical storm-force winds extend out 60 miles. “On the forecast track, the center of Erin is likely to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend,” said NHC senior hurricane specialist Richard Pasch. “Gradual strengthening is forecast to begin today, and Erin will likely become a hurricane by late Thursday or early Friday.” The cone of uncertainty shifted back to the north slightly since Tuesday with the northwest Caribbean islands less likely in the storm’s direct path. While there are no watches or warnings in place, the NHC advised the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to monitor Erin’s progress. Swells from the storm will begin to hit the islands by the weekend with dangerous rip current conditions. “Erin has not been able to strengthen significantly for the past couple of days, likely due to marginal sea surface temperatures, and a relatively dry mid- to lower-tropospheric air mass,” Pasch said. “However, it is expected that the system’s environment will gradually become more conducive for intensification over the next 48 hours.” The forecast from the NHC has Erin intensifying into what would be the season’s first hurricane with 75 mph sustained winds by early Thursday, making it a Category 1 hurricane. The forecast predicts it will grow into a major Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph sustained winds and gusts of 140 mph by Sunday morning with the cone of uncertainty encompassing a wide swath in the Atlantic that is just north of the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Winds could potentially be felt in the islands beginning Friday. “Erin could move close enough to the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico over the weekend to produce some impacts on those islands,” the NHC stated in its key messages for the storm. “However, the magnitude of those impacts is still not known, and interests there should continue to monitor the progress of this storm.” The impacts on the U.S., Bahamas and Bermuda also remain uncertain. As of 8 a.m., the NHC also was tracking a tropical wave with disorganized showers and thunderstorms that could develop after it emerges from the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, forecasters said. “This disturbance is forecast to move west-northwestward and cross the Yucatan Peninsula today with no significant increase in organization. Some development of this system is possible after it emerges across the southwestern Gulf beginning on Thursday while the system moves to the west-northwest or northwest at 10 to 15 mph,” forecasters said. The NHC gave it a 10% chance to develop in the next two days and 20% in the next seven. After Erin, the next name on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season would be Fernand. A second system that NHC had been tracking in the northwestern Atlantic off the coast of Nova Scotia had its chances for development dropped to 0%. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last week updated its season forecast now calling for 13-18 named storms for the year, of which five to nine would grow into hurricanes. Two to five of those would develop into major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. YORK, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man was arrested on Tuesday after firearms and methamphetamine were found during a search, deputies said. According to officials, on Aug. 12, deputies with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 2400 block of George Washington Memorial Highway following reports of suspects involved in the sale of a large amount of crystal methamphetamine. As a result of the search, 2.5 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, 1.5 pounds of marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, two handguns, one rifle and $10,000 in cash were seized from the residence, deputies said. Alors qu’une chaleur écrasante a frappé la France et notamment le sud-ouest en ce début de semaine, et que le thermomètre dépassait encore les 40 °C ce mercredi 13 août à Lyon, Météo-France indique désormais qu’un « nouveau pic caniculaire est attendu pour le week-end du 15 août ». La vague de chaleur qui touche actuellement la France, la 51e depuis 1947, « devrait se poursuivre en fin de semaine », insiste Météo-France. Les journées de vendredi et samedi devraient être particulièrement chaudes, avec « de nouveau des valeurs pouvant atteindre les 40 °C dans le sud-ouest », poursuit l’institut météorologique, tandis que le nord devrait rester « à l’abri des chaleurs les plus intenses ». Une canicule frappe la France, s’oriente-t-on vers un scénario plus intense qu’en 2003 ? « Vendredi, après une nouvelle nuit chaude sur les trois quarts sud-est du pays où les températures ne descendent pas sous les 20 °C, les températures atteignent à nouveau 38 à 40 °C l’après-midi entre le midi toulousain, les Landes et le sud des Charentes », indique Météo-France.
