New Report Claims Subaru Will Give Americans A Levorg Wagon, And It'll Be A Hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog. Levorg May Reach The USA For The First TimeThe 2026 Subaru Outback was revealed earlier this year, and while it always sat on the fence between a station wagon and an SUV, this new version is more clearly the latter. But wagon enthusiasts may soon get something more like the longroofs they love, if an unconfirmed report from Japan's BestCar is to be believed. According to this, Subaru may be about to launch a third-generation of the WRX-based Levorg equipped with the brand's new Strong Hybrid powertrain. More pertinently, the wagon will reportedly be sold in North America for the first time since the nameplate was introduced in 2014. Potentially Arriving As Early As Next YearSubaruThe publication's report is short on details, but it claims that the new Levorg is likely to debut either sometime around the middle of next year or early in 2027. Whether this will be a true third generation or a facelift of the second-gen introduced in 2020 is yet to be confirmed, though BestCar says that the new Levorg will likely be roughly the same size as its predecessor, but "even more stylish." The Strong Hybrid (S:HEV) system shares components with the Toyota Hybrid System, and if it is destined for the new Levorg, we can expect it to use the same 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine and dual electric motors as those applications, along with a continuously variable transmission. Subaru's take on the system (which is AWD) first appeared in the 2024 Crosstrek, where it developed a combined 158 horsepower. The 2026 model makes up to 194 hp. Don't Get Too Excited About A New Wagon For AmericaRelated: 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Base Is a Better Deal Despite Price Hike While we can see there being a niche below the strong-selling Outback, introducing a new model can be tricky, and with BestCar's inconsistent track record on unconfirmed scoops like this one, we can't be certain that any plans for a new Levorg would have the North American market under consideration. Moreover, it's worth noting that Subaru has other practical cars to sell, including the Solterra and the Uncharted, the latter of which is a longer, swoopier take on the Crosstrek recipe with a fastback roofline. Still, both the Solterra and Uncharted are all-electric, and perhaps a hybrid Levorg will help attract future EV buyers. Hyundai has deployed a fleet of heavy-duty fuel-cell trucks while Toyota plans to convert Class 8 heavy-duty trucks operating out of the Port of Long Beach to its latest generation of hydrogen power. Toyota and Air Liquide will build a new station in Ontario, California, to store cryogenically cold liquid hydrogen. The station will use a fueling system that can refill a truck faster than via diesel infrastructure. Meanwhile, Toyota’s Mirai fuel-cell sedans have been run through Long Beach port since 2015. Through 2023, Toyota sold 14,105 Mirais in the US, according to CarFigures. The switch to hydrogen power for California’s port trucks is gathering steam. Last year, FirstElement Fuel opened, at the busy Port of Oakland, what it calls “the world’s first commercial truck stop for hydrogen vehicles, with 10 times the capacity of any previous station.” Hyundai deployed a fleet of 30 XCIENT 6x4 cab-over tractors with 450 miles of range to fuel there for “drayage” duty, moving shipping containers. Toyota, which fielded the Mirai hydrogen car in southern California to a less than overwhelming public response, is not by any means turning sour on fuel cells. The automaker plans to convert the logistics-fleet Class 8 heavy-duty trucks operating out of the Port of Long Beach to its latest generation of hydrogen power. The trucks, with Toyota’s Gen 3 FC fuel-cell systems and the capacity to go 600,000 miles without major servicing, will cover routes to Toyota parts centers in Ontario, California, and San Diego. Hydrogen Can Refill Faster Than DieselThere will be fueling both at Long Beach and at the North American Parts Center California in Ontario. Toyota is working with industry veteran Air Liquide to build a new station in Ontario that will store cryogenically cold liquid hydrogen (it liquifies at -423 degrees Fahrenheit, with more energy density). The station will use a fueling system that can refill a truck faster than via diesel infrastructure. The hydrogen in this case will come from Air Liquide’s mobility plant in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Toyota’s hydrogen trucks will start operations soon. Toyota“The program is moving along pretty well,” Jacob Brown, Toyota mobility communications manager, told Autoweek. “The hydrogen-powered Class 8 trucks are in development, and validation is under way. It remains a priority to decarbonize our commercial fleet, especially at the Port of Long Beach and our regional distribution center in Ontario, California,” Brown said. “At Long Beach, you can smell the diesel in the air, and this program hopefully will be the start of alleviating the soot and emissions. It takes a village of collaboration to decarbonize ports and fleets, but we believe we have the technology to do it.” Tri-Gen Waste-to-Energy PlantAnd not all the fuel cells are mobile. Toyota also partnered with Connecticut-based FuelCell Energy to build, at the Port of Long Beach (second busiest in the US), a new vehicle processing center with fuel-cell power. The Long Beach center is Toyota’s largest vehicle processor in North America, capable of moving more than 200,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles off ships annually. The center also is where accessories get added, from mud guards to TRD wheels. The processing facility had been in several different buildings over 117 acres, with 250 employees. The key to the new construction is a waste-to-energy plant called Tri-Gen. Both Class 8 trucks and Mirai hydrogen cars fuel up at Long Beach. ToyotaThe system from FuelCell Energy, which was dedicated last year, uses biogas to produce renewable energy, water, and renewable hydrogen. Excess electricity goes into the local grid, and water to a car wash on the property. The biogas (which is a potent greenhouse gas when released to the atmosphere) comes from food and municipal waste located 100 miles away in Victorville, California, and arrives via pipeline. “It’s seamless,” said Jeffrey White, a senior manager at Toyota Logistics Services Long Beach. When Will Trucks Hit the Road?“Hydrogen supply issues have been a challenge for the last several years, so being able to produce it on site provides some consistency and reliability,” White said. “We also have hydrogen for the trucks. It has been a game changer.” The Gen 3 FC-equipped trucks store and use hydrogen in its gaseous state, Brown said, but the Air Liquide facility in Ontario stores it as liquid before refilling, and Long Beach stores it as gas. Brown declined to offer a ballpark date for when the trucks will hit the road, because “timelines slip.” An attached light-duty hydrogen station gets enough hydrogen from the plant to fill all the fuel-cell Mirais arriving at the port. Hearst OwnedThe Mirais have been run through Long Beach since 2015, but it’s a small-volume model: Through 2023, Toyota sold 14,105 Mirais in the US, according to CarFigures. The number would likely be higher with a more robust light-duty hydrogen fueling infrastructure, especially outside California. But powering heavy-duty trucks with hydrogen is proving a more successful application for fuel cells. Is hydrogen a transportation energy source that will ever be mainstream? Please comment below. Ford has been teasing what it's calling a new "Model T moment" over the past few days, hinting at a new model that could change the automotive industry for decades to come. CEO Jim Farley announced that the time has come. New EV Pickup LaunchFord will be launching a new EV pickup truck starting at $30,000, slated to hit the streets in 2028. The Ford Model T, launched in 1908, revolutionized the car industry as it became arguably the first affordable, mass-produced vehicle that could be configured in a plethora of ways to suit the needs of anyone from business people to farmers, railroad workers, firefighters and more. “Now is time to change the game once again,” Farley said on Ford's website. “The new pickup, built here in Louisville, is going to cure a lot of problems, like all those generic, two-row crossovers that dominate our industry.” A pair of Ford Model T vehicles are parked outside the Antique Vehicle Garage Facility at The Henry Ford in Dearborn on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.Linking this new pickup truck to the Model T is quite the statement. Farley also linked the new truck to another of Ford's great affordability-related innovations. “We looked at the past for innovation, we looked at the Model T and the flathead V8 that Mr. Ford installed in our cars in ’32," he said. "These are times when Ford broke with tradition and broke the rules." Details on the Coming Pickup TruckFarley said Ford plans to break the rules again by producing the new truck in the U.S. with U.S.-produced parts at an affordable price. The new pickup truck will be produced on Ford's upcoming Universal EV platform, which is planned for production in Louisville, KY, at a plant that Ford is investing $2 billion in, Farley said. That plant will also employ some 2,200 workers at a minimum of $22 an hour, he added. The five-seater truck will also be "more spacious inside than the [Toyota] RAV4," have a trunk in the front in addition to the bed in the back, be "faster than our Mustang twin turbo," include fast-charging capabilities, "have amazing range" and be able to "power your house for six days," Farley said. "Just like 'ole Henry [Ford], our idea is that the people who work here at Lousiville will be able to buy this car and spend money on other things they love, like vacations, and their homes and their kids' education," he added. Ford also plans to make multiple body styles for the vehicle, "for work and play." And in addition to the Louisville plant investment, Farley said the pickup truck's batteries will be made in Marshall, Michigan, at another plant the company has invested $3 billion into recently called the "Blue Oval Battery Park." "Look, this project is a lot bigger than Ford Motor Company, this project is about our country," Farley added. The new EV pickup truck will join Ford's current three-vehicle EV lineup, which includes the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit. Read the full story on The Auto Wire Curated By Cadillac Pushes Brand Into Bespoke MarketThe new Curated by Cadillac program has been revealed, allowing shoppers to order bespoke design elements for their car. But Cadillac is only dipping its toe into allowing customers to customize their rides, something European automakers have embraced for some time. GM is accelerating its push for autonomous vehicle tech. For now, the program is only being offered for the 2026 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and then only a limited number of the high-performance sedans. For now, the luxury brand isn’t revealing how many shoppers will be able to experience the program, shrouding it in a bit of mystery. Those who do go with the Curated by Cadillac program will work with a local dealer and a brand concierge with a background in design. The customer will be walked through the different customization options to create a unique vehicle. Among the options are over 160 different paint colors, which might sound like a lot but is actually a rather small figure compared to other automaker’s bespoke design options. Still, Cadillac will give customers the option of adding a high-gloss or frost finish to the hue they select. For the interior, shoppers get to choose from an array of color options (although exactly how many hasn’t been revealed) and some unspecified materials. While the seats are part of the customization process, we would imagine trim pieces, door inserts, and perhaps some other components can also be customized. Plus, each Curated by Cadillac car is built by hand at the Artisan Center in Warren, Michigan, adding to the special feel of the program. But all of this comes at a cost. Cadillac says a 2026 CT5-V Blackwing from the program has a base MSRP of about $158,000. That alone might keep the number of bespoke cars small. The bigger question is will Cadillac expand this program after 2026 to include other model lines like the Escalade? And will this help the brand better compete with European rivals, which always seem to be the measuring stick? Industry analysts say the trend reflects a mix of economic caution, improved vehicle reliability, and changing consumer priorities. For automakers, it presents a challenge: new car sales have slowed as many drivers opt to maintain their current vehicles rather than trade them in. According to S&P Global Mobility, the average passenger vehicle in the U.S. is now more than 12 years old. Pickup trucks skew even higher, averaging nearly 14 years on the road. This longevity is driven in part by advances in engineering and manufacturing, with modern vehicles capable of surpassing 200,000 miles when properly maintained. While fewer trade-ins mean tighter dealer inventories for late-model used cars, the extended lifespan of the national fleet is fueling growth in the aftermarket sector. Replacement parts suppliers, repair shops, and specialty service providers are seeing increased demand as owners invest in keeping their vehicles roadworthy. The tire, brake, and battery markets are particularly benefiting from the trend. Automakers are responding by offering certified repair networks, extended warranties, and subscription-based service packages to retain customer engagement long after the original sale. Economic factors, including high new vehicle prices, elevated interest rates, and limited availability of some models, have reinforced the appeal of keeping older cars. For many households, repairing a well-maintained vehicle is still less expensive than buying new. Industry experts say the shift could persist for years, especially as electrification reshapes the market and consumers weigh the cost of adopting new technology. For now, the winners are the businesses keeping aging vehicles on the road — and the drivers who see value in every extra mile. Sign up for the Motorious Newsletter. Florida wildlife commissioners voted unanimously (5-0) Wednesday morning to reinstate a black bear hunt and approve the final rules for the upcoming hunting season this winter. That regulated hunt will take place over 23 days in December, and it will mark the first Florida black bear season in a decade. The long-term future of black bear hunting in Florida remains uncertain, however. An advocacy group known as Bear Warriors United filed a related lawsuit against the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Tuesday night, less than 24 hours before the FWC commission meeting was scheduled to take place in Havana. The group is arguing in its suit that FWC “improperly delisted the bears in 2012,” and part of their intention is to stop future bear hunts from happening, according to WFSU. Wednesday’s approval vote was expected, as commissioners gave their preliminary thumbs up for the state’s black bear hunt in May. But the move to re-open black bear hunting in Florida has been mired in controversy, even though state biologists say black bear populations are large and healthy enough to sustain a hunt. Those populations have grown across the board since the last regulated hunt was held in 2015, according to FWC, and this has led to increased human-bear conflicts in some places — including Collier County, where the state saw its first-ever fatal black bear attack in May. Tuesday night’s eleventh-hour lawsuit is just the latest example of the lengths that anti-hunting groups and wildlife activist groups have taken to stop the hunt. Read Next: Anti-Hunters Will Attempt to Sabotage Florida’s Bear Hunt With This Dirty Tactic USA Today reports that at least a dozen of these groups have organized protests in recent weeks, and some of them bused in members from major cities so they could speak out during the commission meeting that took place Aug. 13 in Havana. That meeting included more than two and a half hours of public testimony, including from representatives of Bear Warriors United. The commission’s unanimous vote solidifies the rules surrounding the 23-day 2025 black bear season that is slated to begin Dec. 6 and end on Dec. 28. FWC will hold a lottery for the 187 available permits, which will allow each hunter to harvest one bear from one of the state’s four bear management units. There are also harvest caps for each of the BMU’s. Permits will cost $100 for residents and $300 for non-residents (with only 10 percent of the available permits going to non-residents.) Black bear hunters will be allowed to use both archery gear and firearms — including rifles, pistols, shotguns, and muzzleloaders — and they have to follow specific rules around tagging and harvest reporting. Click here for a full look at the regs that were approved by commissioners Wednesday. Wednesday’s vote also lays the groundwork for future bear-hunting seasons if certain conditions are met. This includes population baselines that need to be maintained in specific bear management units for regulated hunting to continue. The FWC’s current plan includes a phased approach for allowing dogs to be used to take bears, which was one of the topics brought up during the recent commission meeting in Havana. New York City’s mayoral race is heating up, with Zohran Mamdani, the young progressive who leapt ahead of establishment figures in the primary to win the Democratic party nomination, appeared to widen his lead over his main rivals this week. Mamdani, 33, edged further ahead of former New York state governor Andrew Cuomo, and incumbent city mayor Eric Adams was far behind, in advance of the election this November to pick a leader for the largest city in the US. In a metropolis that leans Democratic, he was also far ahead of Republican talkshow host Curtis Sliwa, and also another independent, the sky-diving former federal prosecutor and much less well known Democrat, Jim Walden. According to a poll released on Tuesday, Mamdani, who has been endorsed by fellow left-wingers on the national stage such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, held a 19 point lead over Cuomo, his nearest rival. It was however, a small scale survey, where the Siena poll sampled just 317 registered voters and cited an unusually wide 6.7% margin of error. Mamdani is a Muslim, which garnered some negative attacks ahead of the primary, and a member of the Democrat Socialists of America nine-member “State Socialists in Office” bloc in New York’s state assembly. Cuomo had been expected to win the Democratic primary, but despite his almost universal name recognition, he was beaten after being weighed down by an overly conventional campaign and a damaged political past after resigning as governor in a torrent of accusations of sexual harassment and bullying on the job. Mamdani was deemed on Tuesday by Siena to be 32 points ahead of Sliwa and held a 37 point lead over Adams, who has been plagued by allegations of corruption and is being pushed closer towards the door by voters after one term. With Mamdani as the candidate to beat, his credentials are now under attack and he has just four years under his belt as a state legislator. Cuomo has hit Mamdani for living in a rent-stabilized – or rent-regulated – apartment – where the rent is $2,500 a month when the market rate would be $8,000, while he earns $147,000 a year and is campaigning on housing affordability and calling for higher taxes for the wealthiest New Yorkers. Cuomo has accused Mamdani of “callous theft” and proposed a new means-test law, “Zohran’s Law”, that would control who gets to live in the city’s one million rent-stabilized dwellings. The Mamdani campaign has said their candidate would have met Cuomo’s proposed qualify 30% rent-to-income standard when he moved in and was earning $47,000 a year, and described Cuomo’s proposal as “petty vindictiveness.” However, Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf said the issue is an opening for New York City voters who are leaning against Mamdani. “It won’t move the numbers for younger people who are the base of his support, but the argument could benefit both Cuomo and Adams because it makes Mamdani look like a hypocrite,” he said. Mamdani, meanwhile, has launched a “Five Boroughs Against Trump”, shifting his focus to what many Democratic New Yorkers could agree is the common enemy, the Republican US president. Trump has threatened to intercede in New York – a threat made vivid with the national guard now patrolling Washington DC’s streets – if Mamdani was elected, and Cuomo posted that that was likely to happen and that “Trump will flatten him like a pancake”. Sheinkopf said Mamdani’s switch to attacking Trump was a wise political strategy because it deflects from his lack of governing experience. “He can be beaten but the problem is will any of these guys be able to figure it out? Cuomo’s numbers have to be much lower for Adams to win, and Adams has to pick up momentum. “The only way he [Mamdani] can get the Black vote back is offer a mea culpa that he made some mistakes early on but argue that crime is down, education and job numbers are up, tourist numbers are great, but what I need is more time to make sure 85,000 new housing units already budgeted for come through,” Sheinkopf says. Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, a state assembly Democrat whose district includes much of East Brooklyn, is among moderates who are coming aroundto the left-winger and attended a Mamdani-led anti-Trump meeting on Tuesday. “Democrats, both moderate and progressive, are uniting around urgent issues like affordability, housing, and protecting our democracy,” Hermelyn said. VIRGINIA BEACH — A man was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison for sending a threatening email to a Virginia Beach Catholic school following media reports about a controversial student punishment issued by the school. Bobby Dale Francisco II, 31, pleaded guilty in May to a felony charge of threatening bodily harm in writing. While the crime carries a maximum punishment of five years, state sentencing guidelines had suggested Francisco get probation, according to a spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Circuit Judge Sal Iaquinto also ordered Francisco to comply with any mental health counseling and medication recommended by his treatment provider, the spokeswoman said. St. John the Apostle Catholic School received the threat in September, shortly after multiple media reports about the school’s decision to suspend a student for failing to immediately report that a classmate had brought a bullet to school. The student told officials he waited until later that day, when the other student wasn’t around, before reporting it to the principal. The boy who brought the bullet received the same punishment. Francisco emailed the school through the “contact us” form on its website. The message included his name, address and phone number. The school canceled classes for two days afterwards, and hired a security firm. When contacted by police, Francisco said he never intended to harm anyone and was merely venting his frustration over the punishment issued to the student. The mother of the 11-year-old boy who was suspended sued the school afterwards. In April, Virginia Beach District Judge Vivian Henderson ruled in her favor, calling it “appalling” for the school to punish the boy for “trying to do the right thing.” Jane Harper, [email protected] View the full article

This article was originally published in The 19th. This story was originally reported by Mel Leonor Barclay of The 19th. During a recent campaign stop in central Virginia on a sweltering afternoon, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger drew the most energized reaction from the crowd after telling the audience that aside from tackling the high cost of living, her focus as governor would be on ensuring Virginia has “the best public schools in the nation.” Four years ago, Republican Glenn Youngkin won an upset victory for the state’s highest office by turning his attention to education: Youngkin’s “Parents Matter” rallies stoked frustration at pandemic-era school closures and masking rules, railed against how schools were teaching students about race and LGBTQ+ issues and promised to expand alternatives to traditional public schools. Youngkin lambasted the state’s test scores, and turned the inclusion of transgender kids in schools into a political lightning rod. Get stories like this delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up for The 74 Newsletter Youngkin’s message gave him an edge in Democratic strongholds around Northern Virginia, and while that region remains solidly blue for Democrats, data shows Trump and Republicans have held onto sizable gains there since the 2020 election. It also turbocharged Republicans’ war against diversity, equity and inclusion by putting kids at the center. Now, as Spanberger campaigns to retake Virginia’s top office for Democrats, her strategy on public education could offer a playbook for a party that political analysts say has struggled to come up with a clear agenda to counter Republicans’ messaging. Her performance will help shape her party’s stance heading into the 2026 midterms, much like Youngkin’s election did for Republicans in 2021. The Virginia governor’s race between Spanberger and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is one of the only competitive statewide contests on the calendar this year and will be closely watched as a referendum on President Donald Trump’s second term and a test of Democrats’ path forward following last year’s searing losses. In speeches, statements and multiple interviews with The 19th, Spanberger said she is focused on making life more affordable for all Virginians and stemming what she described as the “chaos” of the Trump administration. She is also focused on countering Republicans’ efforts to “erode faith in our public schools,” and wants to make sure the state is contending with the challenges of teacher shortages, crumbling school buildings and post-pandemic academic recovery. With two women at the top of the ballot, Virginia is poised to elect its first woman governor this year. If Spanberger wins, the state will be run by a former lawmaker with a law enforcement and intelligence background, and — for the first time — a mom to school-aged children. Spanberger’s daughters are enrolled in public schools around central Virginia, one each in elementary, middle and high school. Recently, a whirlwind day of campaigning ended with a busy evening at home prepping a Wicked costume for a school spirit day. She tries to be home for either hair braiding and school drop off in the morning, or by bedtime to tuck them in at night. Still, Spanberger isn’t dwelling much on the historic potential, but during a recent event with Black ministers, she said a question about how schools should educate students on history and race illustrated how actively parenting shapes her views and helps her connect with voters. “It matters to other people,” Spanberger said. “One of the gentlemen at the round table came back to me and said, that was the most important thing that you said — how you see it as a mother.” Earle-Sears campaigned alongside Youngkin in 2021, backing many of his promises on education. “She will prioritize parents’ rights and basic reading and math skills over ideological grandstanding,” Earle-Sears’ website reads. The lieutenant governor is also promising to expand alternatives to traditional public schools in the state — Virginia Republicans have pushed for charter schools and vouchers for private school tuition — and “empower parents to choose the best school for their children.” Earle-Sears has also said she supports Trump’s policies on transgender students, and will promote policies in Virginia that exclude transgender girls from girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms and sporting teams. Spanberger unveiled her agenda for the state’s public schools Friday with an event in Portsmouth that marked the launch of a new coalition of supporters called “Parents and Educators for Spanberger.” The group will highlight her support for strengthening the state’s schools and her “focus on academic excellence.” According to a copy of the plan shared with The 19th, as governor, Spanberger will focus on championing the state’s public schools, lobbying to cover funding gaps for school operations created by the state and the federal government, and oppose efforts to create vouchers for private education. Spanberger also promised to lobby state lawmakers for funding to fix old and dilapidated schools. The Democrat said she will also prioritize addressing the state’s teacher shortage by boosting recruitment and mentorship, and raising teacher pay, though she did not commit to a specific raise amount. Citing reports that the state is lagging behind when it comes to reversing the learning losses of the pandemic, Spanberger said she will make sure schools have the resources they need to help students meet learning standards and uphold “academic excellence and rigor.” She’ll also direct the state to update its best practices for school safety. During the Portsmouth event, Spanberger told the audience about her experience watching one of her daughters struggle with reading. “My little girl was having a little bit of trouble getting where she needed to be,” Spanberger said. It was her public school teacher, Spanberger told the audience, who worked “tirelessly” to turn things around and built a child who is now an eager reader. “We need to focus on ensuring that we are not playing games, that we are not using teachers or parents or educators as political pawns,” Spanberger said. “We need to focus on the results that matter to our kids.” A poll published in July out of Virginia Commonwealth University found that education is the top issue for nearly 1 out of every 10 voters. Spanberger’s event highlighted her efforts to refocus voters on the challenges facing public schools and hurting student learning, and away from the culture-war issues that have dominated the political conversation around education. Republican Virginia gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sear waves to supporters during a campaign event at the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department on July 1, 2025 in Vienna, Virginia. (Kayla Bartkowski/Getty Images)Republicans have increasingly seized on the inclusion of transgender children and teens in public schools, including in the most recent presidential election when GOP ads attacking trans rights dominated the airwaves in the last few weeks of the campaign. It was Youngkin back in 2021 who tested the waters on the issue as part of a broader message on school safety and parents’ rights, and his upset victory in Virginia cemented it in Republicans’ election playbook. This cycle, Spanberger is hoping to reset the terms of the conversation. Republican policies, she said, are disempowering parents and local communities, and hurting vulnerable children. “As a parent, my heart goes out to the parents who are just trying to do right by their kids and don’t want to see their kids at the center of a political back and forth, or a political punching bag,” Spanberger said. “It’s easy to get people kind of confused and scared, and that I find to be the really unfortunate thing.” Spanberger said Republican members of Congress and Trump are going after “the basic provision of health care that a parent is able to get for their kid.” And federal and state level policies banning transgender students from some sports teams are throwing out a process that “was driven by parents, teachers and coaches” under the purview of the state’s sporting league. Earle-Sears’ campaign did not respond to a request for comment on her education agenda, but in a recent interview with a local TV station, Earle-Sears said that if Virginia districts don’t willingly create private spaces and sporting teams according to students’ sex at birth, she would sign legislation forcing them to. (Separately, the Trump administration is threatening to take federal funding away from Virginia districts who don’t do away with inclusive policies around transgender students.) Earle-Sears said squarely that the issue of transgender student inclusion is driving parents away from public schools. “That’s why parents are saying, you know what, give us our tax money and let us make the decision on where to send our children to school,” Earle-Sears told WJLA, adding that some parents are turning to private schools, parochial schools and to homeschooling. She called schools that refuse to adopt such policies “rogue schools” that some parents feel “pit me against my child.” Spanberger has not outright opposed charter schools, but is opposed to policies that would “siphon” funding from traditional public schools. During the 2021 campaign, Republicans in Virginia tapped parent frustrations over school closures and rules mandating masking in schools, creating a gateway for a national cultural critique of teachers and school leaders. It was a time of “extreme, really unprecedented parental frustration,” said Jon Valant, the director of the Brown Center on Education Policy at the Brookings Institution. “Especially as more research came out about how schools were opening and it seemed safe, Democrats found themselves on their heels politically. You had a very potent political argument from Republicans saying, ‘these public schools are shut down when you want your kids to be in school — they’re not listening to you. They screwed up their pandemic response. Who do you trust on education?’ “Democrats could not figure out how to navigate that,” Valant added. For all of the attention on groups like Moms For Liberty, which leaned on the idea of “parents’ rights” to promote conservative beliefs and religion in public schools, Valant said the group is no longer the political powerhouse it appeared to be years ago. Book bans proved unpopular among many voters, and Republican candidates for governor who campaigned with Youngkin and tried to borrow from his education playbook in subsequent election cycles overwhelmingly lost their bids. That includes Derek Schmidt who lost to Gov. Laura Kelly in Kansas and Tudor Dixon who lost to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan. While Democrats have become more effective at pushing back on Republican attacks, Valant said he doesn’t think “there is a clear Democratic Party agenda on education policy. That is a challenge for the Democratic Party by the 2028 election.” Spanberger’s race in Virginia offers a trial run. In an interview, the Democratic nominee said she could personally relate to the uneasiness many parents were feeling the last time Virginians elected a governor. “My youngest daughter was in kindergarten when the schools shut down, and my oldest daughter was in middle school. My middle was in elementary school,” Spanberger said. “I know what it felt like to be a parent, where your kids just get sent home from school one day,” she added. She described it as a really uneasy, fraught time for herself and many parents. “I’m watching them do school virtually, and it’s very clear that it’s certainly not the same. It’s very clear that they’re missing their friends, and they’re missing that social exposure, and they’re missing just the experience that comes with being in a classroom.” Spanberger said that landscape created a political opportunity. But four years later, she wants voters to reflect on the challenges that still face public schools and the legacy of an agenda she said created distrust in schools and demoralized teachers. Spanberger pointed to the results of a recent national standardized test that measures student achievement in math and reading. Virginia fourth graders saw virtually no improvement in reading and slight improvement in math, while eighth graders did worse in both subjects. An analysis of the testing data by Harvard and Stanford universities that tried to measure pandemic academic recovery found that Virginia ranked 41st in reading recovery between 2019 and 2024, and 51st in math recovery. The Youngkin administration said the scores reflected the “massive learning loss” that continues to persist from the pandemic. “We had big work to do coming out of the pandemic,” Youngkin said when the scores were released. Spanberger also criticized the governor for a tip line he launched early in his administration that encouraged parents to report “inherently divisive practices” in schools, and that was criticized for creating fear among teachers. The tip line was shut down about a year later. Youngkin signed several teacher pay raises into law totaling $1.6 billion while in office, but last year vetoed a bill that would have brought Virginia teacher salaries to match the national average, arguing that data from a national teachers’ union on the matter was flawed. The union reported that Virginia ranks 26th in teacher pay. “During this time of recovery, there’s this governor who said he prioritized public education, but what did he actually do? You want to prioritize public education, but you’re going to vilify teachers?” Spanberger said. “I have three daughters in Virginia public schools, and I know everything that is possible for so many kids is dependent on the education that they do or don’t get in our public schools,” Spanberger said. “And so, education is a priority issue for me, but it’s actually contending with the real issues related to education.” Early voting in Virginia starts September 19. The general election is November 4. This was originally published on The 19th. View the full article

Dreaming of cooler temps? After winter 2024-25 brought major snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures to parts of the U.S (including Cincinnati), an "old-fashioned winter," as forecast by the Farmers' Almanac, may be welcome news for farmers – and the rest of us, too. The 209th edition of the Farmers' Almanac, out now, forecasts "chill, snow, repeat" weather patterns for the upcoming 2025-26 winter season. Here's what winter in Ohio is predicted to look like this year. The Farmer's Almanac 2025-2026 winter outlook map. What is the fall forecast for the Ohio Valley? The arrival of the autumnal equinox Sept. 22 officially starts the fall season, and the Farmers' Almanac fall forecast predicts cooler-than-average temperatures for the Ohio Valley region. September and October will be cooler and drier than normal across the Midwest, including Ohio, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Warm periods with scattered showers early and mid-month are expected before turning cooler. A mix of showers and sunshine with shifting temperatures (warm early, cooling mid-month, then warmer at the end) is expected in October. What is Ohio's winter going to be like this year? The Ohio Valley, which includes Greater Cincinnati, is "set for a classic winter wonderland" this year, according to the Farmers' Almanac. The Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Midwest regions (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin) are forecast to be very cold and snowy this winter. As the snow gives way to very cold temperatures, snow moves into Kentucky and Ohio. The beginning of March brings snow to most of the region. The month ends with brisk, windy conditions, plus snow in the north. What's the two-month forecast for the Ohio Valley? Here's what The Old Farmers Almanac (not to be confused with the Farmers' Almanac) predicts the remainder of August and September will look like. August Aug. 12-16: Showers east, sunny west; warm. Aug 17-28: Sunny, then showery; warm. Aug 29-31: Sunny, warm. September Sep 1-6: Showers, then sunny; warm. Sep 7-13: Showers, then sunny; warm east, cool west. Sep 14-18: Showers, warm. Sep 19-24: Sunny, cool. Sep 25-30: Showers, then sunny; cool. When does winter start?Meteorological winter starts Dec. 1, and astronomical winter begins Dec. 21. When will winter end?The 2026 spring equinox falls on March 20, per the Farmers' Almanac. This signals the end of winter and the start of the new season. Meteorological spring starts March 1. How does the Farmers' Almanac make its weather predictions? The long-range forecasts for the Farmers' Almanac are calculated two years in advance and take "into consideration things like sunspot activity, tidal action of the Moon, the position of the planets, and a variety of other factors," according to the almanac's website. The Farmers' Almanac claims an 80% to 85% accuracy rate for its forecasts, although some experts have disputed those claims. Did the Farmers' Almanac get its winter weather prediction right last year? The Farmers' Almanac mentions in the new edition how its winter 2024-2025 forecast "for a mild winter in Texas and the Southern Plains hit the mark, and we correctly called the cold weather over the Northern Plains and Great Lakes." The almanac also notes, "We also accurately forewarned of a very cold spell at the end of January," perhaps referencing some of winter 2024-2025's milestones, including the arctic air mass that contributed to cold weather advisories that month. "But La Niña threw a curveball, leaving us with fewer wet weather events than expected," the Farmers' Almanac said. February also brought dangerously cold temperatures, but overall, the contiguous U.S. had the third-warmest winter on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with an average temperature of 34.1 degrees Fahrenheit, 1.9 degrees above average. There's a chance a La Niña winter could be in store, according to the Climate Prediction Center. That could mean cold and snow for the Northwest, dry conditions in the South and higher-than-average temperatures in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. The Farmers' Almanac creates its forecasts "using a proprietary formula that adapts to the mysteries of nature and the ever-changing world in which we live," this edition notes. "The basis of our prediction method was developed by our founding editor according to correlations between celestial events and various meteorological conditions." While scientists may question the accuracy of The Farmers' Almanac – and the competing The Old Farmer's Almanac – the guide, which includes planting tips and an astronomical calendar, remains an interesting read.
