The NewsPresident Donald Trump used a template for his takeover of DC policing that’s worked for him before: Move quickly, establish a large and visible security presence — then wait for Democrats to splinter over how to respond. Democrats in Congress denounced the 30-day mobilization inside the capital, which Trump previewed during the 2024 election, as an “unjustified power grab” and vowed to block an extension. The city’s elected attorney general called it an “unlawful” abuse of emergency powers to lower crime rates that the administration itself said had fallen. But DC Mayor Muriel Bowser was more cautious, denouncing Trump’s takeover as “authoritarian” while also suggesting that the city could work with him. “What I’m focused on is the federal surge and how to make the most of the additional officer support that we have,” the mayor told reporters on Tuesday, after meeting with Attorney General Pam Bondi. Hours later, in a video “conversation with community leaders,” Bowser said that the intervention was legal; the president had invoked “a part of the charter that he has the prerogative to invoke.” She acknowledged the city had long-standing problems, like illegal gun trafficking and violence in nightlife areas, and said the federal government could now help with them. “Just imagine if we had the number of [DC police] officers that we should have — if we were at 3,800, instead of 3,100 and some,” said Bowser. While protesters rallied near the White House, denouncing the administration’s “colonialism” and demanding DC statehood, Bowser was trying to effectively co-own the takeover. In Bowser, the president has found an unlikely partner — a Democrat who had repeatedly clashed with progressives on crime, denouncing the “defund the police” movement that flourished in 2020 and stalling a criminal justice bill that Republicans in Congress later repealed. On Wednesday, after announcing that he’d host this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, the president suggested that more rollbacks of the capital’s criminal code were on the way. “We’re going to need a crime bill that we’re gonna be putting in,” Trump told reporters, “and it’s going to pertain initially to DC.” Know MoreCongressional Democrats lined up to criticize Trump’s move on the capital, which gave the president just 7% of its votes last year. Many of them linked this week’s crackdown to his deployment of troops into Los Angeles earlier this year to quell anti-ICE protests. But those protests happened in a small section of the city, giving the Marines very little to do, at great expense. But DC’s legal status is unique; it’s a city with “home rule” powers limited by Congress and the Constitution. Republicans had already moved legislation through the House that would scale back policies supported by the council and voters, like non-citizen voting in local elections. DC politicians agree on the need for full statehood, which faces constitutional hurdles that no Democratic Congress has overcome. They disagree on how to get there. Ken Cedeno/ReutersActivists in groups like Free DC, a statehood group formed in the unsuccessful fight to save the Revised Criminal Code Act two years ago, have made a basic human rights argument for statehood. As they see it, no Americans should be denied representation in Congress or full control over their laws. Other Democrats, Bowser included, see statehood moving even further out of reach if voters outside the district see it as dangerous and poorly led. The Trump administration has exploited that division and previewed the sort of changes it wants to force on the city, potentially with some Democratic buy-in. Trayon White, an indicted Democratic city council member who in 2023 called for the National Guard to enter the DC “war zone,” wrote on Instagram that the president could be fixing a problem. “It’s not popular, but I hear from our senior citizens and they are afraid,” White wrote. “I am not against additional support led by DC (not a takeover) in the community, especially when AK47s and 30-40 rounds are prevalent at these crime scenes and MPD numbers are low.” In a press conference and a Washington Post column, DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro previewed several changes that Republicans are seeking to the city’s criminal justice laws: a repeal of the Youth Rehabilitation Act, a revision of the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act, and a repeal of the Second Chance Amendment Act. Bowser has been critical of the first law, which exempts defendants under age 25 from mandatory minimums; she supported the other laws. But she has clashed with the council over a law that decriminalized fare evasion on public transit and vetoed the reform of the district’s criminal code that later became a soft GOP target in Congress. At the same time, she has lobbied hard for a deal that would bring a football stadium to the city. That’s become another valuable point of leverage used by Trump against DC’s government. Room for DisagreementFree DC’s rally against Trump’s move was the highest-profile act of protest in the city since he made his announcement, and it clarified where the most active resistance was coming from. “If Trump cared about DC, he would acknowledge that our babies, our 14-year-olds, our children — he would not be demanding that they be prosecuted as adults,” said Free DC director Keya Chatterjee. “We will not sacrifice our children to a tyrant,” said Samantha Davis, the founder of the Black Swan Academy. “Harsher punishment does not improve outcomes for young people in DC or anywhere. We know this. History has shown this. Research has shown this.” The protest took place not far from the White House, on a stretch of 16th Street NW that had been painted with the words BLACK LIVES MATTER during the 2020 protests against police violence. The White House wants to tell the story of a city wrecked by incompetent progressives, then rescued by men who weren’t scared by the optics of armored vehicles parked next to the Washington Monument. Just as Los Angeles was “liberated,” the capital can be “liberated” from Democrats with crazy ideas who think crime and vagrancy are just part of living in a city. Bowser’s willingness to work with the administration could complicate that. Democrats are not just competing over crime statistics; they are competing against TV images of crime, TV interviews with victims’ families, and a police union — hated by protesters, credible to voters — that supports the takeover. The long tail of the 2020 protests is a consensus between nervous Democrats and confident Republicans that cities need more police, with more resources. And if they can’t get that, they might lose their sovereignty. The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is experiencing “severe” staff shortages at all its hospitals, with the number of shortages increasing by 50% this fiscal year, according to a new report from the agency’s independent watchdog. The report, released on Tuesday, came a day after the Guardian revealed the department had lost thousands of healthcare professionals deemed “core” to the system under Donald Trump, without which, the agency said, “mission-critical work cannot be completed”. The inspector general found 94% of VA facilities faced a “severe” shortage of doctors, while 79% faced a severe shortage of nurses. Psychology was “the most frequently reported clinical occupational staffing shortage”. A majority of VA facilities also reported severe shortages of police officers, who keep veteran patients and staff safe. The VA operates the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, serving 9 million veterans annually. The report is required under two laws, one signed by Trump in 2017, which require the agency’s inspector general annually to determine the extent of staffing shortages within each medical center. In a statement, Congressman Mark Takano of California, the ranking Democrat on the House committee on veterans’ affairs, said the report “confirms our fears” that shortages of medical staff were leading to “decreased access and choice for veterans”. The VA press secretary, Peter Kasperowicz, told the Guardian the congressionally mandated watchdog report was “not a reliable indicator of staffing shortages” and that it was “completely subjective, not standardized and unreliable”. The report is based on a survey of VA medical centers in April. Since then, a Guardian review of agency staffing records found, the VA has continued to lose doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers and other frontline medical professionals. Kasperowicz did not dispute the fact that the agency had lost thousands of “mission-critical” healthcare workers under Trump – including after the watchdog’s survey period concluded. The VA is in the midst of a department-wide reduction of 30,000 workers, which the secretary of veterans affairs, Doug Collins, said could be accomplished by September through a combination of attrition, a hiring freeze and deferred resignation program. The staff cuts, Collins said, would not affect patient care, but were “centered on reducing bureaucracy and improving services to veterans”. They’re in the same segment, but these vehicles won’t appeal to the same buyerAt first glance, these two Japanese crossovers may not seem like direct rivals. The refined, wagon-like Toyota Crown Signia looks like it wants to appeal to Lexus drivers, while the Honda Passport is a more rugged, utilitarian vehicle. But these midsize crossovers both start at around the same price and provide more space than their smaller RAV4/CR-V siblings, while sticking to a less complicated two-row layout. Toyota’s other midsize SUV, the 4Runner, is a rugged body-on-frame vehicle, so is a more serious off-roader than the Passport. Here’s how the Crown Signia and Passport compare, bearing in mind that we’re comparing the 2025 version of the former and the 2026 model of the latter, as those are the ones you can buy right now. This may just be Toyota’s classiest crossover, although the proportions are closer to those of a wagon to some. All Crown Signias have acoustic front side glass, whereas only the top two Passport trims do—another little hint that the Toyota is the more upscale of the two. Chunky all-terrain tires, skid plates, and much more ground clearance (8.3 to 6.7 inches) distinguish the rugged Honda from the Toyota. While the Toyota is longer, the Honda is wider and a lot taller, so buyers who prefer a traditional SUV look will prefer the Passport. 2. Honda’s V6 Is More Powerful But Less Efficient Than Toyota’s Hybrid2026 Honda Passport TrailSportHondaReliable power rather than peak efficiency is often what’s desired in a rugged crossover, which is why all Passports have a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 producing 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are standard across the Passport lineup, and this setup should result in a 0-60 mph time in the mid-seven-second range. This is hardly a recipe for thriftiness, so expect 19/25/21 mpg city/highway/combined on lower trims and 18/23/20 mpg for TrailSport models. The Crown Signia has a completely different powertrain that’s best-suited for urban commutes. Both trims get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid producing 240 hp combined, paired with an electronic on-demand AWD system and a CVT. Toyota claims a reasonable 7.1 seconds for the 0-60 run, so it’s potentially quicker than the more powerful Honda. Despite this, the Sygnia is far more efficient, with an EPA rating of 39/37/38 mpg. On the downside, we did find the four-cylinder and CVT combination to be noisy in our review, especially since the rest of the Crown Signia driving experience is so refined. 3. Honda Has More Off-Road Toys View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article There’s no contest here, as only the Honda should be considered if you’ll be doing any off-roading at all. Besides, Toyota has the 4Runner for off-road enthusiasts. Although both crossovers have standard all-wheel drive, Honda’s dedicated TrailSport trims have several extras to make off-roading easier. These include hill descent control, Snow/Trail/Sand driving modes, an underbody skid plate, an off-road tuned suspension, and all-terrain tires. Certain Passport models also get a TrailWatch camera system with four exterior cameras to alert the driver of any obstacles. Superior ground clearance and better approach/departure angles also make the Passport much better across loose, uneven surfaces. 4. Toyota Has More Creature ComfortsIf you’ll be spending all your time on normal city streets and highways, the Toyota Crown Signia is a better choice. Its interior is quiet and the materials are especially nice, from the standard leather seats to the supple plastics. In the Toyota, you get more standard features than in the Honda, such as heated front/rear seats (only heated front seats are standard in the Passport), ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power liftgate, an extra USB-C port, and a larger digital gauge cluster (12.3 to 10.2 inches). There are also some available features in the Toyota that aren’t available in the Honda at all, such as a digital rearview mirror. The Honda is by no means badly equipped, but the Toyota provides a more luxurious experience. It’s also worth mentioning that the Toyota is priced between $44,090 and $48,490, whereas the Passport has a price range of between $44,750 and $53,650. Ultimately, you’re going to be paying more and losing out on some features to take advantage of the Passport TrailSport’s more robust underpinnings. 5. There’s A Huge Difference In Cargo SpaceWithout a third row to squeeze in, one would assume that both these crossovers have large trunks, but that's only true for one of them. The Passport’s extra height and more traditional SUV proportions give it more interior space. It has 44 cubic feet of space behind the second row and as much as 104.6 cubic feet when the second row is folded. The Crown Signia’s space behind the second row is 25.6 cubic feet; even the RAV4 has more space. With the back row folded, the Crown Signia has 68.8 cubic feet. Legroom in the second row of the Toyota works out to 37.1 inches, a reasonable figure, but the Honda has a spacious 40.9 inches. The Honda is a better off-roader, a lot more practical, and its powertrain is smoother. The decision to give most trims the TrailSport treatment was a smart move, as these more rugged versions of the Passport are selling strongly. Over at Toyota, things are a bit different. Because Toyota already has a dedicated off-road SUV in the form of the 4Runner, the Crown Signia has been engineered to focus exclusively on refinement and efficiency. The Mercedes G-Wagen is a classic in many senses, but thought of as sui generis, meaning it would take some gall for Mercedes’ biggest rival, BMW, to try to capture some of the magic. Except, reportedly, now BMW is doing just that, developing an off-roading G-Wagen rival that could debut before the end of this decade. The off-roading BMW and ostensible G-Wagen rival is based on the X5, according to Automotive News, and would probably have a gas engine and be built at BMW’s South Carolina factory. Production could start as soon as 2029. The car’s code name is G74. The car could even replace the BMW XM in BMW’s extensive lineup of SUVs. It’s expensive too, starting at $161,675, which might help explain why it was the worst-selling BMW model last year. A replacement car that rivals the G-Class would also likely be big, powerful, and expensive, but it would also have a more natural home in the constellation of SUVs that customers currently want. The G74—or whatever BMW ends up calling its G-Wagen rival—would also appeal more towards those who think of themselves as off-roaders, or at least overlanders, even if for many that just remains an aspiration. The BMW XM, on the other hand, is suited more for track excursions, which might be an even smaller demographic. There are no details just yet about the G74’s power, but it would likely compare favorably with the G-Wagen, which starts at $148,250. The base model G-Wagen is a hybrid with an inline six-cylinder engine that makes 443 horsepower, while the AMG G-Class has a V-8 making 577 horsepower. The AMG G-Class is hybrid too, and so could be the G74. The BMW G-Wagen rival would also likely have off-roading upgrades like underbody protection and more off-roady tires. Robb Report contacted BMW for comment and will update this story if it hears back, though automakers typically decline to comment on future products as a matter of policy. The G-Wagen is one of Mercedes’ signature vehicles, and it recently celebrated building 600,000 of them, while BMW’s SUV prowess keeps getting bigger and bigger, along with the plant in South Carolina that builds them, so perhaps a BMW G-Wagen rival was inevitable. Tropical Storm Erin is expected to intensify into the first major hurricane of the season, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm formed near the Cabo Verde Islands over the weekend and has strengthened. “Erin will enter an area with conducive atmospheric conditions that will allow it to quickly strengthen north of the Lesser Antilles," AccuWeather lead hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said in a press release. “Water temperatures across much of the Atlantic main development region are plenty warm to support tropical development and even rapid intensification." Artificial intelligence is the current hot button topic that makes the cataract-riddled pupils of wealthy shareholders turn into Tom and Jerry-style bulging dollar signs, but for a long time that same effect was caused by automation. Roles that once required in-depth training and certifications for fickle humans who take sick days, have babies, and are subject to labor laws could be replaced by specialized robots that require none of those pesky considerations. I've always understood the nature of automation, but I didn't quite realize the scope of it until I watched the production process of the second-generation R56 Mini Cooper back-to-back with the third-gen F56 Mini Cooper at Mini's Oxford manufacturing facility. Mini is now onto the F66 generation, which I think maintains the fun factor of the prior generations, but I couldn't find a good video of its manufacturing process, so here I'm focused on the 2007-2013 R56 and 2014-2023 F56. Beyond the fact that the entire manufacturing process is mesmerizing, I noticed that many more humans were involved in the assembly of R56 Mini Coopers than in the assembly of the newer F56. Early Minis were not known for their dependability or infallible build quality, and I'm not saying that automation is exactly why those metrics improved between these two generations, but it is an interesting variable to consider. This process appears to be automated in the F56 assembly, and as a treat, you can see a first-gen R52 Mini Cooper cabriolet alongside the R56 on the line, since they were sold at the same time. Overall the R56 production video seems to offer a more in-depth look into the manufacturing process, but you can still see more human involvement was necessary than the F56 manufacturing process In the video of F56 production, in contrast, humans are only required to transfer the finished hood stamps to a rack until the vehicle is already painted. Once the body shell is painted, a human briefly performs what appears to be a visual paint quality and thoroughness inspection, until the shells reach the interior assembly portion of production which is done by human hands. I, perhaps ignorantly, assumed that the process of building a car required fewer steps than these videos illustrate. Granted, both of these videos were filmed over 10 years ago, so production has likely grown even quicker and more automated, but I was surprised by how many steps it takes to build a Mini. The families of three hostages currently being held in the Gaza Strip by Hamas - Avinatan Or, Eitan Mor, and Omri Miran, filed a lawsuit for NIS 20 million against International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, NGO Shurat Hadin, which is representing the families, announced on Wednesday. The lawsuit accuses Khan of turning the court into "a branch office of the terrorist organization," Hamas. It demands that Khan be investigated for acting against Israel under ulterior motives - namely to sideline allegedly sexual abuse allegations against him. "The defendant not only slandered the State of Israel, not only presented false representations to the plaintiffs, but also provided services to terrorist organizations and assisted them," reads the lawsuit. It adds that when he finally did request arrest warrants for the three chief Hamas leaders - Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh, all of whom were killed by Israel over the past two years - he coupled them with warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he could potentially bring up the recent hack of U.S. federal court databases with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Alaska later this week. Investigators believe that hackers, including Russian actors, breached the court’s electronic filing system, potentially exposing sensitive court data across multiple U.S. states. The major hack was first reported by POLITICO last week. “I guess I could, are you surprised?” Trump said during a press conference Wednesday in response to a question from a reporter on whether he would bring up the hacking activity with Putin during their planned meeting on Friday. “They hack in, that’s what they do. They’re good at it, we’re good at it, we’re actually better at it.” This marks the first time Trump has publicly acknowledged the hack since it was brought to light last week. The president has previously avoided public confrontations with Russia about its digital influence activities. During a meeting with Putin in 2018, Trump went against U.S. intelligence findings and asserted that Russia did not meddle in the 2016 presidential elections, despite evidence to the contrary. Officials believe the hackers exploited basic and unresolved vulnerabilities in the court filing system that were first discovered in 2020. Following POLITICO’s initial report, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts announced that it is stepping up cybersecurity measures and is working with impacted courts to mitigate the impact of the attacks. Congress is also keeping a close eye on the incident. Lawmakers on relevant House and Senate committees were briefed on the hack in July, and will receive a further classified briefing on the incident when Congress returns from its August recess after Labor Day.
