Former President Bill Clinton is the "prime suspect" in the House Oversight Committee’s probe looking at the late financier Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking case, according to the committee’s chairman Rep. James Comer. "Everybody in America wants to know what went on in Epstein Island, and we’ve all heard reports that Bill Clinton was a frequent visitor there, so he’s a prime suspect to be deposed by the House Oversight Committee," Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, said in a Monday interview with Newsmax. The House Oversight Committee issued a large batch of deposition subpoenas to those with ties to Epstein Aug. 5 — including the former president and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — to testify before lawmakers. HAVANA, Fla. - Florida wildlife commissioners voted unanimously to approve the Sunshine State’s first regulated black bear hunt in 10 years, setting the stage for a three-week-long season in December 2025. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted 5-0 during a controversial meeting Wednesday to authorize the hunt, which will take place in areas of the state where bear population counts are considered the highest. The decision followed months of contentious debate, with both hunters and conservationists attending a series of meetings. Applications for the lottery-style permitting process will be open to individuals 18 and older, who pay a series of fees. According to the Humane World for Animals, a nonprofit organization that advocates animal welfare, Florida is now one of more than 30 states with regulated black bear hunting seasons. While no comprehensive population survey has been conducted in recent years, advocates for the hunt point to nuisance bear reports, which have risen by more than 200% from 2016 to 2024. Unless halted by a court as part of ongoing legal challenges, the 2025 hunt will run from Dec. 6 to Dec. 28 or until the quota is reached. HUNSTVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — North Alabama will have at least one Democrat running for Congress in 2026. Andrew Sneed announced he is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Dale Strong for his seat in Congress. He launched his campaign at an event on Saturday. Sneed tells News 19 he feels politics are a major source of division for people at the moment, but he believes his community can come together and make something better. It’s just service.” Sneed said, as a member of Congress, he would be accessible, listening to the voices of North Alabamians. “It’s just so important that we don’t feel siloed, that we meet people where they are and know that they’re valued, they’re seen, they’re heard, and that they have a representative who is there to represent them,” Sneed said. He is a small business owner who was born and raised in the district. Sneed said he wants to represent workers and prioritize education funding. Chưa từng nghĩ mình sẽ yêu thích môn Hóa, nhưng khi lên lớp 10, được cô giáo dạy Hóa giúp củng cố kiến thức nền tảng, biến những tiết học khô khan thành sinh động, Mến dần tìm thấy niềm hứng thú và bắt đầu ấp ủ mong muốn theo học một ngành liên quan đến môn này. Vượt qua kỳ thi tốt nghiệp THPT, Mến thi đỗ vào lớp chất lượng cao Hóa Dược của Trường ĐH Khoa học Tự nhiên. Những năm đầu đại học, làm quen môi trường mới, vốn là người kiệm lời và khá tự ti, Mến gặp không ít khó khăn. “Dù vậy, em luôn ưu tiên việc học và cố gắng không để những yếu tố khác ảnh hưởng. Nữ sinh đặc biệt quan tâm đến các trường tại châu Á như ở Đài Loan (Trung Quốc), Singapore, Hàn Quốc… Cơ hội đến khi Mến biết đến chương trình trao đổi hè của Đại học Quốc lập Dương Minh Giao Thông, trong đó có vòng xét chọn học bổng BenQ Materials. Sau khi tìm hiểu và cân nhắc kỹ, Mến quyết định chuẩn bị hồ sơ và quá trình phỏng vấn, trong đó tập trung làm nổi bật định hướng cá nhân và tiềm năng phát triển. Ở thời điểm ấy, nữ sinh có GPA 3.65/4.0, hai năm liên tiếp đạt danh hiệu Sinh viên 5 tốt cấp trường. Đồng thời, từ năm hai, Mến cũng tham gia phòng thí nghiệm Hóa Dược của khoa Hóa học để nâng cao năng lực nghiên cứu. Điều này phần nào thể hiện sự nỗ lực, quyết tâm cao của Mến”, thầy Hùng nói. Hiện tại, Mến tập trung hoàn thành chương trình bậc cử nhân tại khoa Hóa học, Trường Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên, đồng thời trau dồi tiếng Anh và tiếng Trung để có thể thích nghi với môi trường học tập quốc tế trong thời gian tới. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump told European leaders during a call on Wednesday that he does not intend to discuss any possible divisions of territory when he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this week, according to two European officials and three other people briefed on the call. Trump said on the call, which also included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that he is going into the meeting with Putin with the goal of securing a ceasefire in Ukraine, those sources said. Trump and European leaders agreed that a ceasefire in Ukraine has to be implemented before peace negotiations can begin, the European officials and two other people briefed on the call said. Some of the European leaders were left with the impression from the call that Trump is not optimistic about the results of his meeting with Putin, they added. The call on Wednesday took place just days ahead of Trump’s meeting with Putin, which is planned for Friday. European and Ukrainian officials have been nervous about the president’s meeting with the Russian leader since he announced it last week. Among their concerns is that Trump and Putin might agree to the parameters of a peace deal, including territorial divisions, and then try to pressure Ukraine to agree to it. Trump’s comments last week that there would "be some land swapping” between Russia and Ukraine, in particular, put Zelenskyy and European leaders on edge. But the two European officials and three other people briefed on Wednesday’s call said all the leaders agreed that Ukraine must be included in negotiations and should be the one to decide what territorial concessions it might be willing to make. They also said the leaders were united in their belief that if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire, Trump will likely levy new sanctions on Russia. Two additional people familiar with Wednesday’s call said European leaders left feeling positive about Trump’s plans for his meeting with Putin. One of them said achieving a ceasefire is expected to be the priority for Trump in the meeting. The other person expressed confidence that Ukrainian territory would not be negotiated without Ukraine. In response to a request for comment, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement: "The White House does not discuss details of the President’s private diplomatic conversations. However, President Trump has been clear that he wants to end this war and stop the killing, and Friday’s meeting with President Putin will serve as an important moment in this process.” Trump said Wednesday after the call that it was “very good” and suggested that another meeting involving Zelenskyy could quickly follow his sit-down with Putin. “There’s a very good chance that we’re going to have a second meeting, which will be more productive than the first, because the first is I’m going to find out where we are and what we’re doing,” Trump told reporters. “I would like to do it almost immediately, and we’ll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself, if they’d like to have me there.” The president also said Russia will face “severe consequences” if Putin doesn’t agree to end the war. Donald Trump is looking to relax environmental rules for commercial spaceship companies. In an executive order titled “enabling competition in the commercial space industry” that he signed on Wednesday, he said it’s imperative to national security that the private rocket-ship industry increase launches “substantially” by 2030. That would mean, according to the executive order, that those companies may be able to forgo the environmental reviews that are required under the National Environmental Policy Act (Nepa). Private space companies are required to get launch permits from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). And, as part of that process, companies are subject to review under the National Environmental Policy Act. Sean Duffy, the US secretary of transportation, which oversees the FAA, called Trump’s executive order “visionary”. The FAA has faced criticism from space companies for taking too long to review launch permits while environmental groups have lambasted the agency for not using Nepa reviews to require more protections at launch sites. These environmental reviews are required because rocket launches and landings can be massively disruptive to local towns and residents, along with the natural surroundings. Exhaust, smoke plumes and sonic booms created at launch can injure and kill endangered species, and detritus from exploded rocket parts returning to Earth can harm fish and marine animals with hazardous material spills, fuel slicks and falling objects. Trump’s executive order appears to especially benefit Elon Musk and his company SpaceX. SpaceX has been seeking to increase its rocket-ship launches and landings around the country. The company has been involved in a lawsuit brought by environmental groups for violating the National Environmental Policy Act; they say the FAA did not do a thorough enough environmental assessment of SpaceX’s impact to endangered species regarding its rocket launches in Boca Chica, Texas. The lawsuit looked at the first launch of SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket in Texas in April 2023. The spaceship, which is designed to one day make it to Mars, pulverized its launchpad on takeoff, sending chunks of concrete flying 6 miles (10km) away. The blast ignited a grassfire that burned nearly 4 acres (1.5 hectares) of state park and, from what is known, destroyed a nest of bobwhite quail eggs and a collection of blue land crabs. “This reckless order puts people and wildlife at risk from private companies launching giant rockets that often explode and wreak devastation on surrounding areas,” said Jared Margolis, a senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the groups that brought the lawsuit. “Bending the knee to powerful corporations by allowing federal agencies to ignore bedrock environmental laws is incredibly dangerous and puts all of us in harm’s way,” Margolis added. “This is clearly not in the public interest.” The FAA announced in May that it had given SpaceX permission to increase its number of Starship launches in Texas from five per year to 25. SpaceX has also been seeking to increase launches of its smaller Falcon rockets from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California from 50 per year to 95. Trump’s executive order would facilitate an expedited review process to get these and other launch permits. Republicans are waging a propaganda push to hide the racist impact of their efforts to gerrymander congressional districts ahead of next year’s midterm elections. A couple of weeks back, Rep. Al Green, flanked by fellow members of the Texas Democratic congressional delegation, browbeat members of the media at a news conference. Green’s gripe? That the mainstream press wasn’t, in his view, doing an effective job of conveying the functional racism at play in the Donald Trump-backed gerrymandering effort in Texas, which is deliberately designed to target majority-Black and majority-Latino districts. Unfortunately, we have grown to the point in this country where you can use racism against people of color, but people of color can't respond and say, ‘That’s racism.’ If we do, you’re not going to print it. You’re not going to carry it. What you’re going to do is allow the racist statement to prevail. And what we try to do to fight it — by indicating that it IS racist — you allow that to just be words that evaporate into nothingness. It was a warning that conservatives can obscure the true intent or result of this discriminatory assault on democracy if members of the press won’t plainly depict it as such. And as Republicans spread misinformation over their gerrymandering efforts, it’s hard to argue with him. The examples are mounting. Just last week, Harmeet Dhillon, the civil rights-averse head of the DOJ’s civil rights division, claimed during an interview that the racist gerrymandering effort in Texas isn’t truly racist but, instead, an effort to dismantle the “racial spoils” that Democrats have purportedly reaped from laws designed to combat racist gerrymandering. This, of course, is not true. My colleague Hayes Brown recently wrote an excellent op-ed explaining how Texas Republicans are making a mockery of the Voting Rights Act. And, as my former colleague Joy Reid detailed in a recent Substack post, it’s abundantly clear that the Texas GOP’s plan will disenfranchise nonwhite voters — particularly, Black ones. But seemingly not to be outdone by Dhillon’s propaganda, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott claimed in a Fox News interview over the weekend that Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Texas Democrat, is the real racist — for having the gall to highlight the racism in the gerrymandering effort. Abbott essentially claimed that the GOP plan couldn’t possibly be racist, because it would create additional Hispanic-majority districts, though that obviously doesn’t preclude the maps from being racist to Black people — and it’s worth noting that the new districts were were drawn specifically to favor conservative-leaning Hispanics. And Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is in on the propaganda push, as well. During an appearance on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show, DeSantis said he’s entitled to further gerrymander his state’s congressional map because then-President Barack Obama and then-Attorney General Eric Holder “gerrymandered brutally across the country in this decade’s census.” That’s another lie, though Obama and Holder have advocated against gerrymandering. In reality, Florida Republicans — who controlled their state’s most recent redistricting process — drew gerrymandered maps that DeSantis pressured them to gerrymander further with a proposal from his office that diluted Black voter power. Nonetheless, the governor portrayed Florida’s map as unfairly weighted in favor of minority groups and claimed “there’s some racial gerrymandering that’s still lingering that we have to correct, per a recent Florida Supreme Court decision.” Indeed, Florida’s Republican-packed Supreme Court ruled last month that DeSantis could move forward with his gerrymandering plan, but the court also acknowledged that the plan would diminish the power of Black voters. All this to say, evidence abounds that Republicans are waging a racist assault on the American voting system — even as they wage a propaganda campaign to present this push as something else entirely.
