  7. Ford’s Bronco Roadster Concept Channels the Original 1966 U13 originally appeared on Autoblog. A Nod to Sixty Years of BroncoFord is marking the Bronco's 60th birthday with a mix of special projects that reflect both heritage and modern flair. Following the 60th Anniversary Edition package and the custom Silver Lake Dunes builds, the company has introduced another one-off to commemorate the milestone: the Bronco Roadster Concept. The inspiration for the Bronco Roadster comes from the original 1966 U13 Bronco Roadster, the most stripped-down and playful of the three launch body styles. Marketed as "the world's first four-wheel-drive sports car," the U13 carried the spirit of an off-road Mustang more directly than the half-cab pickup or the wagon, embodying what Ford designers called "fun through simplicity." That philosophy became the starting point for the modern concept. Ford View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Inspired by the U13 OG BroncoThe Roadster Concept reimagines what the U13 might look like in 2025, while staying true to its open-air roots. The body has been pared back to a Wimbledon White shell with no roof or doors, echoing the bare-bones look of the original. Door openings have been angled and finished rather than left raw, while the swing-out tailgate has been replaced with a custom fold-down unit stamped with the vintage "FORD" wordmark. At each end, simple steel bumpers mirror the utilitarian style of the first-generation Bronco, and machined Fifteen52 Analog wheels finish off the retro stance. Inside, Ford has taken the same reductionist approach. The rear seats are gone, replaced with a cargo area that doubles as a truck-style bed with a full-size spare mounted inside. The front seats lose their headrests and wear silver vinyl upholstery, with the same material used on the grab handles. Ford stripped out the carpeting, leaving exposed steel floors and Wimbledon White-painted dash panels for a spartan, purposeful finish. The result blurs the line between interior and exterior – way beyond what you can do with a regular Bronco – a theme that matches the open-air philosophy behind the project. Ford View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article It's A Design Exercise...For NowThe Bronco Roadster Concept is a design exercise and will not see production. The absence of a roll cage, modern seat restraints, and weather protection makes it impractical (and unsafe) as a road-going vehicle. Mechanically, it has a manual gearbox, which means power comes from the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Beyond its engineering, though, the concept is more of a reminder than a product plan. It highlights the DNA of simplicity, freedom, and adventure that Ford continues to emphasize in the current Bronco lineup. While this exact vehicle will remain a one-off, the design cues could inform future accessories or limited-edition trims, keeping the spirit of the U13 alive six decades after it first appeared. 8. A speeding Nissan Altima slammed into the back of a garbage truck in what seems to be a case of reckless driving. Unsurprisingly, the Altima pancaked against the garbage truck, which weighs many times more than the midsize sedan, leaving the driver and a passenger in critical condition. Lexus flashes what might become its next sports car. We all know the legendary status of Nissan Altimas, or more specifically those who chose to drive them. After all, there’s no feeling quite like being in the passing lane, actively passing slower traffic, when suddenly one of these strange beasts is three inches from your back bumper. Even more interesting, the Altima will often look like it should be sitting in a junkyard, with parts flapping in the wind, so you have to wonder how it’s still functioning. While not everyone who owns these cars behaves this way, it’s common enough you’ve probably dealt with this on the regular. In this case, the driver was a 21-year-old kid named Ziondre Ogiba of Providence, Rhode Island, reports WPRI. He’s facing serious charges for reckless driving and more. It’s evident in the video the guy is speeding, which might be why he didn’t have time to react to the stopped garbage truck in his lane. Thankfully, the workers in the truck weren’t seriously injured. The garbage truck was stopped at a red light at 5:30 am on August 8 when Ogiba came blasting down the road. Why he was out seemingly joyriding in the Nissan Altima at such an early hour isn’t clear, but there obviously has to be far more to this story. East Providence Police are still trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle, so they’re asking the public for any information they might have. All we can say is rear-ending a garbage truck at high speed is a really dumb idea. Image via WPRI 12/Facebook Join our Newsletter, subscribe to our YouTube page, and follow us on Facebook. 9. A son of Norway's crown princess has been charged with 32 offences including four rapes and several acts of violence and assault, a prosecutor said on Monday. Marius Borg Hoiby, who was born from a relationship before Crown Princess Mette-Marit's married Crown Prince Haakon, has been under investigation since his arrest on August 4 last year on suspicion of assaulting a girlfriend. In addition to four counts of rape, the charges include domestic abuse against a former partner and several counts of violence, disturbing the peace, vandalism and violation of restraining orders against another former partner. He is also charged with filming the genitals of a number of women without their knowledge or consent, public prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo told reporters. "The maximum penalty for the offences listed in the indictment is imprisonment of up to 10 years," he said. "These are very serious acts that can leave lasting scars and destroy lives," the prosecutor said. "The fact that Marius Borg Hoiby is a member of the royal family should, of course, not mean that he should be treated more lightly or more severely than if similar acts had been committed by others," Henriksbo stressed. The four rapes for which Hoiby is charged allegedly took place in 2018, 2023 and 2024, the last one after the police investigation began. Hoiby has already admitted to assault and vandalism in the August 2024 incident for which he was arrested. In a public statement 10 days after his arrest, he said he had acted "under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument", having suffered from "mental troubles" and struggling "for a long time with substance abuse". Hoiby was propelled into the spotlight at the age of four when his mother married Norway's crown prince, with whom she went on to have two more children. He was raised by the royal couple alongside his step-siblings Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, aged 21 and 19. Unlike them, however, he has no official public role. cbw/po/tw View the full article
  10. The displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip is a “red line” and Cairo will not allow any party to risk Egypt’s national security or sovereignty, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Monday. In an exclusive interview with CNN in the northern Egyptian town of Al-Arish, close to the Gaza border, Abdelatty said that Egypt is working through “different channels, with one objective, to alleviate the burden and suffering of Palestinians,” adding that mass Palestinian emigration from Gaza would not be tolerated by his country. “We will not accept it, we will not participate in it, and we will not allow it to happen,” Abdelatty told CNN, adding that displacement is guaranteed to be a “one way ticket” for Palestinians out of Gaza, which would lead to the “liquidation” of their cause altogether. The Israeli government has never given a detailed vision of what will happen to Gaza after the war but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly advocated for moving Palestinians from Gaza to other countries, particularly after US President Donald Trump floated the idea early this year. But even after Trump appeared to cool on the proposal, Israeli officials have embraced it. Egypt is Gaza’s only access to the outside world as Israel has blockaded the territory from the land, sea and air. Cairo has come under intense public pressure to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians and has repeatedly blamed Israel for blocking aid as thousands of trucks remain stranded at its border. Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty gives a press conference in the New Administrative Capital, east of Cairo, Egypt on October 8, 2024. - Khaled Desouki/AFP via Getty ImagesAsked whether the war places the Egypt-Israel peace treaty at risk, Abdelatty said Cairo is “respecting and honoring (its) commitments according to the peace treaty,” but added that “any kind of displacement would be a big risk and we will not allow any single party to risk our national security and our sovereignty… in our border.” The minister’s warnings are some of the harshest since Israel said last week that it is in talks with several countries about taking in Palestinians displaced by the war. “If the Israelis manage to displace them, I can assure you that will be the end of the Palestinian cause,” the foreign minister said. Egypt was the first Arab nation to recognize Israel in 1979. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week that talks are underway with several countries about taking in displaced Palestinians. The countries involved are South Sudan, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Libya, and Indonesia, a senior Israeli official told CNN. In exchange for taking in some of Gaza’s population of more than two million people, the official said the countries are looking for “significant financial and international compensation.” It’s unclear how advanced any of these discussions are and whether they are likely to come to fruition. South Sudan rejected earlier reports that it was in discussions about the resettlement of Palestinians, saying they were “baseless.” Indonesia said it was ready to take in 2,000 Palestinians from Gaza for treatment but that they would return to Gaza once they recovered. Earlier this year, Somaliland also said there were no such talks. No partner for peaceAbdelatty said that while Egypt maintains contact with Israel on the security and intelligence levels, it hasn’t seen a desire from the political establishment to conclude the war. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a partner in Israel right now for peace and the two-state solution,” he said. “We have ministers in the Israeli cabinet right now who do not believe in the two-state solution.” Israel’s far-right ministers, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have called for an expansion of the war in Gaza and the emigration of Palestinians from the enclave, which critics have said amounts to ethnic cleansing. Abdelatty said negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage deal are, however, ongoing, adding that “we reached a sort of understanding on most of the building issues” with regards to the latest proposal submitted by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Egyptian Red Crecent members prepare humanitarian aid at their warehouse in the logistical center supporting Gaza, at Sheikh Zuweid, Egypt, on Monday. - Mayar Mokhtar/APLast month, the US and Israel recalled their negotiating teams from Qatar, where talks had been taking place, with Witkoff saying the latest response from Hamas “clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire.” The Egyptian foreign minister said Cairo is in favor of a comprehensive deal that ends the war, brings back hostages, releases Palestinian prisoners and allows aid to flow in. Israel’s demand to immediately disarm Hamas is, he said, an “impossible” condition at this stage of the talks. “Israel is insisting on disarming Hamas now. Who will do it? How can we do it on the ground?” he said, adding that Israel has tried to eliminate the group through a 22-month bombardment campaign and still failed. “We need to push now (for a deal),” Abdelatty said. There is currently a delegation from Hamas in Cairo, he said, and talks are ongoing with the Qataris, the Americans and the Israelis. “We can have a deal if we have political will.” ‘Once you’re here… you cannot leave’On Monday, CNN saw dozens of aid trucks lining the roads to the Rafah crossing with Gaza, where many convoys have remained idle for weeks or even months, often causing essential food aid to spoil. Abdelatty said that there are 5,000 trucks on the Egyptian side of the crossing waiting to enter the blockaded strip, but that “the Israelis are not allowing them to enter.” Three truck drivers told CNN they’ve been waiting for more than a week for a greenlight to enter. Medhat Mohamed, a father of three, had his truck turned back Wednesday after a rejection by the Israeli military, he said, adding that he has spent the past three weeks parked along the Egyptian side of the border. Palestinians, displaced by the Israeli offensive, shelter in a tent camp as the Israeli military prepares to relocate residents to southern Gaza, in Gaza City on Sunday. - Dawoud Abu Alkas/Reuters“Once you’re here with your truck you cannot leave,” Mohamed told CNN. “Either your aid gets approved and you leave or you stay next to your truck – that might take weeks, or even months” He said it was the little he could do to help Gaza’s starving population. “This is not about money - we can get a lot of money from work in Cairo. We’re here because we want to help in any way we can the people in Gaza.” Another driver, Mohamed Fawzy, told CNN he was carrying ICU beds that were rejected four times by Israeli authorities. Amal Imam, the executive director of the Egyptian Red Crescent, told CNN the beds, along with the rest of aid rejected, had received pre-approval by Israeli authorities but had been rejected for containing metals and plastic. 11. Irish author Sally Rooney has vowed to give fees generated by two BBC adaptations of her books to the Palestine Action group -- banned recently in the UK as a terrorist organisation -- as a government spokesperson on Monday warned anyone flouting the law risked prosecution. The writer, whose second novel "Normal People" (2018) and its 2020 BBC television adaptation won her international acclaim, announced her plans in the Irish Times. Rooney said she had chosen the Dublin-based newspaper to publicise her intention rather than a UK one as doing so "would now be illegal" after the government banned Palestine Action as a terrorist group in early July. "The UK's state broadcaster... regularly pays me residual fees. I want to be clear that I intend to use these proceeds of my work, as well as my public platform generally, to go on supporting Palestine Action and direct action against genocide in whatever way I can," she wrote. More than 700 people have been arrested, mostly at demonstrations, since the group was outlawed under the Terrorism Act 2000. "I feel obliged to state once more that like the hundreds of protesters arrested last weekend, I too support Palestine Action. If this makes me a 'supporter of terror' under UK law, so be it'," Rooney said. The government ban on Palestine Action came into force on July 5, days after it took responsibility for a break-in at an air force base in southern England that caused an estimated £7.0 million ($9.3 million) of damage to two aircraft. The group said its activists were responding to Britain's indirect military support for Israel during the war in Gaza. Being a member of Palestine Action or supporting the group is now a criminal offence in Britain, punishable by up to 14 years in prison. - Record arrests - More than 500 people were arrested at a protest in London's Parliament Square on August 9 for displaying placards backing the group. The number is thought to be the highest-ever recorded number of detentions at a single protest in the capital. At least 60 of them are due to face prosecution, police said. Britain's interior minister Yvette Cooper has defended the Labour government's proscription of the group, stating that "UK national security and public safety must always be our top priority". "The assessments are very clear -- this is not a non-violent organisation," she said. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's official spokesperson declined to be drawn specifically on Rooney's comments. But the spokesperson added: "Support for a proscribed organisation is an offence under the Terrorism Act and obviously the police will... implement the law." Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, the ambassador of the state of Palestine in Ireland, praised Rooney for "using her voice to call out international law and human rights violations in Palestine". "I hope these calls result in practical actions that will stop the horrors we’re witnessing carried out by Israel in Palestine; to stop the genocide and forced displacement and end the Israeli occupation,” she said. Ireland confirmed the appointment of a full Palestinian ambassador last November after Dublin formally recognised a Palestinian state earlier in 2024. har/jwp/rmb View the full article
  12. In a twist of comic irony, New York City — the embodiment of American capitalism — may soon have a democratic socialist mayor in 33 year old Zohran Mamdani. That being said, assuming Mamdani wins November’s general election, the joke may be on national Democrats. Put another way, even as a mayoral candidate, by dint of New York City’s status and his elevation into a national figure, Mamdani presents severe risks to the Democratic Party on the national stage. And as the party looks to regain even one chamber of Congress next year, there is a very real chance that Mamdani’s extreme, socialist policies put the entire party’s political fortunes in jeopardy. The first risk is if Mamdani’s primary victory portends, or ushers in, a seismic shift for the wider Democratic Party. Coming at a time when Democrats are at a crossroads, Mamdani’s win may embolden progressives, sideline moderates and drive the party further to the left. If this is the direction the Democratic Party moves in, they will end up even less politically relevant than they are today. At the same time, Mamdani’s views are considerably out of line with what mainstream Democratic views should be — particularly on the economy and public safety. The U.S. is a capitalist nation. Although more can be done to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity and is protected by a social safety net, the U.S. is not a socialist country. And on public safety, Mamdani, a past proponent of “defund the police,” is pledging to move “billions of dollars (from the NYPD budget) to a new Department of Community Safety” that emphasizes soft on crime measures, according to New York Post reporting. With Democrats already struggling to overcome perceptions that they can’t be trusted to handle the economy or public safety. And given New York City’s prominence, Mamdani’s policies may quickly become the face of the entire party, a gift to the GOP. The second, and arguably biggest, risk Mamdani poses lies in how he would govern. Mamdani campaigned on endless handouts backed by huge tax increases, replacing police officers with social workers, and Soviet-inspired government-run grocery stores. Whether Mamdani is able to implement any, or all, of these campaign pledges or not, Democrats will find themselves between a rock and a hard place. Either Mamdani is seen as ineffective, and just another Democrat who promised utopia but was unable to actually deliver on his lofty promises. Or, more dangerously, New Yorkers get a firsthand lesson on the dangers of socialism, sparking a considerable backlash against the Democratic Party as a whole. Worse, with New York City being a global center of culture, finance and entertainment, the entire country will witness the damage from Mamdani’s policies. When government-run grocery stores show themselves to be a horrendous idea, which the Soviet Union has already shown them to be, Republicans will immediately pounce on this failure to underscore the danger in electing any Democrat. Should crime spike due to a sharp reduction in the number of police officers, Democrats across the country will be branded as soft on crime. Similarly, if excessively high taxes on the city’s high-earners cause capital flight, a destruction of the city’s tax base and drastically lower the overall quality of life, voters’ trust in Democrats to handle the economy will sink, and it’s already tremendously low. Finally, there is the issue of how Mamdani will govern the city with the world’s largest Jewish population outside of Israel. Due to his history of antisemitic remarks, whether his refusal to condemn “globalize the intifada” or unwillingness to accept Israel as a Jewish state, vitriol he’s never shared for other ethnoreligious states, there are very real concerns that under his leadership, New York City will be even more hostile for Jews. Far from being a local issue, if Mamdani fails to protect New York’s Jewish citizens, it will reinforce perceptions that the Democratic Party is rife with antisemitism. To be sure, national Democrats seem to be aware of the risks Mamdani poses. Some moderates, such as Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), have been blunt, saying Mamdani’s “policies do not comport” with Democrats’ agenda. Others, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies (D-N.Y.) have taken a softer approach, but still indicate some unease with the socialist who has become the face of the Democratic Party. Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday, Jefferies refused to endorse Mamdani or even say whether he was “convinced” about Mamdani and the kind of mayor he would be. Asked about Mamdani’s policy proposals, Jefferies said, “Now, he’s going to have to demonstrate…that his ideas can actually be put into reality.” Hardly a show of confidence from a party leader. Taken together, the elevation of Mamdani and his extreme views may deepen the animosity and alienation many voters feel when they think about today’s Democratic Party. If voters see Mamdani’s leadership devastating New York City and come to believe that this is what the Democratic Party has to offer, it stands to reason that Democrats across the country will pay the price, and likely for many election cycles to come. 13. President Trump announced Monday that he plans to sign an executive order to eliminate mail-in ballots and “seriously controversial” voting machines ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump leaned into his long-standing disdain for mail-in voting, saying other countries have abandoned the practice “because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED.” “I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election,” Trump wrote in his post. “WE WILL BEGIN THIS EFFORT, WHICH WILL BE STRONGLY OPPOSED BY THE DEMOCRATS BECAUSE THEY CHEAT AT LEVELS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, by signing an EXECUTIVE ORDER to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections,” he added. Trump for years has pushed unproven claims about widespread voter fraud involving mail-in ballots. He repeatedly described his 2020 election defeat as “rigged,” pointing to expanded mail-in balloting that was allowed during the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly a third of ballots cast in the 2024 election were submitted by mail, according to a U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) report released in June. While mail-in ballots didn’t hit the record 43-percent level seen during the height of the pandemic four years earlier, they accounted for 30.3 percent of all ballots cast in the election, well above pre-pandemic levels. An effort to dramatically overhaul the way federal elections are run has faced legal roadblocks in recent months. In June, a judge blocked part of Trump’s March executive order that sought to prevent states from counting mail-in ballots that were postmarked by Election Day but arrived later. The judge said the president lacked the authority to impose state election rules. Trump, in his post Monday, appeared to preempt concerns about the lack of authority. “Remember, the States are merely an ‘agent’ for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY, to do,” Trump said. The president accused Democrats of being “virtually Unelectable without using this completely disproven Mail-In SCAM” and pledged to fight to prevent election integrity. “ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING, and everybody, IN PARTICULAR THE DEMOCRATS, KNOWS THIS,” Trump wrote. “I, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WILL FIGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BACK TO OUR ELECTIONS.” “THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX, USING VOTING MACHINES THAT ARE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER, MUST END, NOW!!! REMEMBER, WITHOUT FAIR AND HONEST ELECTIONS, AND STRONG AND POWERFUL BORDERS, YOU DON’T HAVE EVEN A SEMBLANCE OF A COUNTRY.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 14. President Trump has “completely ceded narrative control” of the Russia-Ukraine war to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a former top-adviser-turned-vocal-critic said in an interview published Monday. Fiona Hill, who served as a senior adviser on Russia at the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, argued in a Politico interview that Trump is endorsing Moscow’s position that it’s enough if it decides to stop fighting. “What Ukraine is just basically getting as a concession is for the Russians to stop fighting. And this is Putin’s way all the way through the 25 years of his presidency, which is: ‘I’m going to beat you up, and my concession is that I stopped beating you up,’” she said. Hill said in another interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday that Trump’s red-carpet treatment of Putin in Alaska on Friday also played into the Russian leader’s hands. “Although it was presented as perhaps a show of power by being at a U.S. Air Force base with the … passing of the B-52s and other fighter jets, it did certainly look much more like a show of appreciation for Vladimir Putin,” she said. “And so the optics were really much more favorable to Putin than they were to the United States. It really looked like Putin had set the agenda there, the narrative, and in many respects, the tone for the whole summit meeting.” Hill’s remarks come as Trump on Monday meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House to discuss terms Putin laid out at the meeting in Alaska and efforts to move toward a leaders-level summit to end the war. Trump left the meeting with Putin late last week without securing a ceasefire agreement from the Russian leader, who has repeatedly refused to halt fighting in Ukraine. Trump instead said both parties should move to negotiations for an end to the war. Hill served as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council. She was a high-profile witness during the 2019 impeachment investigation against Trump over whether he was exerting pressure on Zelensky for dirt on his political rival former President Biden. Hill warned in her testimony that Republican lawmakers were repeating a Kremlin-pushed, false narrative that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 presidential election. A GOP-led Senate intelligence investigation concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 election. A White House spokesperson pushed back on Hill’s comments Monday, telling Politico that Trump “has done more to deliver peace in seven months than Joe Biden did in four years” while calling the former Russia White House adviser the “go-to Trump Deranged ‘expert’ on Russia.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 15. View the full article

  17. Automakers love to make special edition cars. Brand tie-ins, rare colors, whatever will get a customer in the door. The problem is, too many of those special editions are just plain uninteresting. They're boring, they feel like quick cash-grabs, or they genuinely make the car they're based on worse. Today, we ask: Which special editions don't? We want to know about the special editions that truly live up to their names — the ones that feel really, genuinely special. Our rules are simple. Any special-run car is eligible; standard combinations of factory features generally don't count (a Mustang with the Performance Pack isn't a special edition), but anything unique enough to earn a name (like a COPO Camaro) is fair game. It can be a special edition to commemorate something, it can honor a past model, or it can tie in to a movie, whatever you want. What special edition car truly feels special? Read more: These Are The Car-Related Movie Mistakes That Really Bother You The Volkswagen HarlequinA Volkswagen Golf Harlequin from the rear - Bruno Alcantara Terevinto/ShutterstockMy pick has to go to the greatest factory paint job of all time: The Volkswagen Harlequin. The Golf is a good car on its own, but it's plentiful and cheap — at least, it was back when the U.S. still got the car. How do you make a Golf stand out not just in a crowd of random cars, but a crowd likely to contain other identical-looking Golfs? Simple: You paint every body panel a different color from its neighbors. The Volkswagen Harlequin (both Golf and Polo) is a truly special edition. It's unique, it stands out, and there's no question it's not a standard Volkswagen. It's my pick for a special edition that really lives up to the name, but what's yours? Leave your picks in the comments below, and I'll pick out my favorites later in the week. Bonus points if you've ever owned the special edition in question. Want more like this? 18. Wooden car wins Pebble Beach Concours. 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo, known as the “Tulipwood,” is made out of mahogany. Weather was great at the sometimes-cloudy 18th fairway this year. It’s safe to say Lee Anderson likes wood. One source said he has something like 40 wooden boats scattered throughout three boathouses at different bodies of water around the country. “I like wood,” he said. So it was only natural what material Anderson would pick for his second Best of Show winner at the Pebble Beach Concours yesterday. It was an all-mahogany 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo. The car he won with in 2022 was another torpedo, but not a wooden torpedo. This one was wood. “It’s different, you know? How many do you see? Not very many.” The so-called “Tulipwood” Hispano-Suiza was commissioned by apertif scion Andre Dubonnet as a race car. The aeronautically inspired bodywork was built by aircraft maker Nieuport-Astra, the same company that made fighter planes in WWI. Dubonnet placed sixth in the Targa Florio in the car and fifth in the Coppa Florio in 1924. The mahogany itself is 1/8th-inch thick, laid over handmade plywood formed out of thin sheets of wood bonded by cadium, a glue-like substance made from cow’s milk. It’s the same stuff they use to make violins. “It’s strong and waterproof,” said RM Auto Restoration’s Jamie Bourdeau, who was the woodman on the RM restoration crew. Body Weighs Just 160 Pounds“Wood was lighter than steel in the 1920s,” Anderson said. “The body alone weighs just 160 pounds.” Most of the wood was in fine shape, even after 101 years. But some of the strips had to be remade. “You can’t steam mahogany,” Bourdeau said, referring to a method where wood is softened by steam then bent into shape. “You have to cut it.” He cut the new strips from blocks of mahogany using what he called a scythe, then mimicked pulling a blade backward in a trimming motion. The moment of glory for the wood. Pebble Beach ConcoursUnlike the plywood substrate, the wooden strips on the surface of the car’s body are held in place by aluminum rivets. Bourdeau said there are 10,000 rivets on the car. The interior is lined with alligator, just as the original car was, and required 50 alligator hides. The car is powered by an 8.0-liter overhead-cam inline six. All six cylinders are fed by a single carburetor and fired by twin distributors. When you look at the engine, you’re seeing polished aluminum and nickel plating. The RM restoration crew. Mark Vaughn“It has a lot of torque,” said engine man Charlie Kominek. The restoration and the sale of the car at auction were both done by RM Sotheby’s auction house. It was RM’s ninth Best of Show winner at Pebble, three more than the second-place Nethercutt Collection and way more than anyone else. The win also marks what may be the third offbeat win in recent years, following a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM in 2014 and an unrestored 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports last year. What is going on at Pebble? Winners there are supposed to be French coupes from the 1930s with long hoods, swoopy fenders, and a cockpit way in the back. But for 2025 at Pebble Beach, wood is good just like it should. Do you have experience working with any woody wagons, or fond memories? Please comment below. View the full article

21. Donald Trump said he will sign an executive order to eliminate mail-in voting and voting machines before the 2026 midterms, days after Vladimir Putin told him US elections were rigged because of postal ballots. “I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS,” Trump wrote in the lengthy Truth Social post Monday morning, also targeting “Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES” which he claimed cost “Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper”. The announcement followed Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska on 15 August, when the Russian president allegedly told him that the 2020 election “was rigged because you have mail-in voting”, according to Trump’s subsequent interview with Sean Hannity. Trump falsely asserted that the US is “now the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting” and claimed “All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED.” Data from International IDEA contradicts this claim, showing that 34 countries worldwide allow mail-in voting, with 12 allowing it for all voters and 22 for some voters. Most European countries offer some form of mail voting, and over 100 countries let their citizens vote by mail when living abroad. US courts rejected numerous fraud allegations after the 2020 presidential election, finding no evidence of widespread irregularities. Across the US, 28 states let voters request a mail ballot without giving a reason, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Eight states and Washington DC send everyone their ballot in the mail automatically, and about one in five American voters lives in one of those states. The president’s opposition to mail-in voting comes despite his own use of the method. In 2020, both Trump and first lady Melania Trump submitted vote-by-mail ballots in Florida ahead of the state’s primaries, which Palm Beach county confirmed receiving. Trump also claimed states are “merely an ‘agent’ for the Federal Government” and must follow presidential orders on elections. That’s wrong: the constitution gives states control over how they conduct elections. Mail voting has exploded in popularity – from fewer than one in 10 voters in 1996 to nearly half during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. As of 2022, it was used by about one in three voters, according to a report by the MIT Election Data and Science Lab. Supporters have long said mail ballots make voting easier for people who can’t get to polling stations – those with disabilities, parents with young kids, or workers with long shifts, while also giving voters more time to research candidates at home.
