Giáo sư, bác sĩ Mai Trọng Khoa, chuyên gia cao cấp tại Trung tâm Y học hạt nhân và Ung bướu, Bệnh viện Bạch Mai (Hà Nội), cho biết ung thư phổi là một trong những loại ung thư phổ biến nhất tại Việt Nam, với tỷ lệ gia tăng, đặc biệt ở các nước đang phát triển. Những người tiếp xúc với khói thuốc lá, dù chủ động hay thụ động, đều có nguy cơ cao. Tuy ung thư có thể xuất phát từ yếu tố nội tại như đột biến gene nhưng tỷ lệ này thấp. Vì vậy, có những người rất trẻ, không hút thuốc chủ động và ăn uống lành mạnh nhưng vẫn mắc bệnh. Nguyên nhân gia tăng ung thư phổi Dân số tăng: Khi dân số tăng, số ca mắc ung thư cũng tăng theo. Đây có thể là yếu tố thức đẩy ca bệnh ung thư phổi tiếp tục tăng trong tương lai gần. Cây rau má gắn bó với đời sống của người dân Thanh Hóa từ bao đời nay. Ban đầu, bà con chỉ xem chúng như loại cây mọc hoang, thu hái về làm thức uống hay chế biến món ăn. Tuy nhiên, nhiều năm nay, ngoài khai thác tự nhiên, người dân xứ Thanh còn gia tăng trồng rau má thương phẩm, đáp ứng nhu cầu sử dụng rộng rãi của thực khách trong và ngoài địa bàn tỉnh. Thậm chí, rau má còn trở thành nguyên liệu chính để làm nên món nộm thanh mát, thường xuyên xuất hiện trong thực đơn mâm cỗ của các gia đình địa phương vào những dịp như giỗ chạp, cưới hỏi hay lễ Tết. Không chỉ hiện diện trong bữa ăn hàng ngày, nộm rau má còn được xem như món đặc sản không thể thiếu trong mâm cỗ ở Thanh Hóa, thể hiện nét văn hóa ẩm thực đặc sắc của người địa phương. Ảnh: Huong Vy Anh Nguyễn Cường – đầu bếp và là chủ một cơ sở kinh doanh dịch vụ cưới hỏi ở Sầm Sơn (Thanh Hóa) cho biết, nộm rau má là món ăn quen thuộc trong mâm cỗ của nhiều gia đình xứ Thanh, nhất là vào thời điểm mùa hè nắng nóng. Ngoài ưu điểm là giá thành rẻ, loại nguyên liệu dân dã này còn dễ sơ chế, có thể biến tấu thành một số món nộm tươi ngon khác nhau và đặc biệt có công dụng giải nhiệt, giải ngấy. “Món nộm rau má có thể kết hợp cùng tôm, thịt ba chỉ luộc, thịt gà... hoặc ăn chay cũng ngon. Cách làm lại đơn giản, không đòi hỏi chế biến cầu kỳ”, anh Cường nói. Món nộm rau má xuất hiện phổ biến trong mâm cỗ ở các khu vực như Sầm Sơn, xã Nga Sơn (huyện Nga Sơn cũ), xã Hoằng Hóa (huyện Hoằng Hóa cũ) Theo người đàn ông này, để làm nộm ngon cần chọn rau má tươi, non, không bị dập, sâu hay héo úa. Rau mua về đem nhặt bỏ rễ, cọng già rồi rửa sạch, ngâm nước muối pha loãng khoảng 15-20 phút, sau đó vớt ra để ráo. Muốn món ăn có màu sắc hấp dẫn và tăng thêm hương vị, người ta còn cho thêm cà rốt nạo sợi, hoa chuối bào mỏng hoặc dưa chuột, bắp cải tím, hành tây thái lát vừa ăn. Các nguyên liệu đã sơ chế xong thì đem trộn với nước mắm pha chua ngọt, có thể thêm các loại thịt luộc như tôm, lợn, gà, bò (tùy sở thích của từng gia đình) và rau thơm (tía tô, kinh giới). Nộm trộn xong chờ chút cho ngấm đều gia vị rồi bày lên đĩa, rắc thêm lạc rang giã nhỏ hoặc hành phi. “Để làm nước trộn nộm ngon, bạn có thể đun sôi lăn tăn nước và đường, khuấy tan rồi để nguội, sau đó thêm nước quất và mắm vào cùng tỏi, ớt xay, tạo thành hỗn hợp chua ngọt có độ sền sệt. Quá trình trộn nộm chú ý thực hiện nhẹ nhàng để các nguyên liệu thấm đều gia vị và không làm rau má bị dập, nát”, anh Cường chia sẻ thêm. Đó là bánh răng bừa (hay còn gọi là bánh tẻ hoặc bánh lá). Sở dĩ món ăn có tên gọi như vậy là bởi bánh có hình dạng giống như chiếc răng bừa - một công cụ lao động quen thuộc của người dân xứ Thanh từ xa xưa. Bánh được làm từ bột gạo tẻ, bên trong là nhân thịt ba chỉ, mộc nhĩ băm nhỏ trộn với hạt tiêu, muối, hành khô. Bánh gói bằng lá chuối hoặc lá dong, sau đó đem hấp cách thủy hoặc luộc. Lá chuối phải sử dụng lá tươi, rửa sạch để ráo rồi hơ qua lửa cho dẻo. Công đoạn này giúp lá khi gói không bị rách. Giảm thiểu nguy cơ trẻ em dân tộc thiểu số bỏ học giữa chừng Tại hội nghị toàn quốc tổng kết Chương trình mục tiêu quốc gia phát triển kinh tế - xã hội vùng đồng bào dân tộc thiểu số (DTTS) và miền núi giai đoạn 2021-2025, định hướng nội dung giai đoạn 2026-2030 vừa diễn ra, Thiếu tướng Văn Ngọc Quế - Phó Chủ nhiệm chính trị Bộ đội biên phòng - cho biết Bộ Tư lệnh Bộ đội Biên phòng được Bộ Quốc phòng giao là cơ quan chủ trì triển khai thực hiện nội dung 2 của dự án “Cán bộ, chiến sĩ quân đội nâng bước em tới trường”. Mục tiêu của dự án là hỗ trợ các em học sinh người DTTS từ lớp 1-12 có hoàn cảnh đặc biệt khó khăn ở khu vực biên giới, vùng sâu, vùng xa, vùng đồng bào DTTS và miền núi. Các hình thức hỗ trợ gồm đồ dùng học tập, sách vở, tài liệu, nhu yếu phẩm và tiền ăn. Tổng số vốn cho giai đoạn 2021-2025 là 300 tỷ đồng từ nguồn vốn sự nghiệp ngân sách của Trung ương. Cùng với đó, 180 tỷ đồng đã được triển khai cho 13 đơn vị trực thuộc Bộ Quốc phòng và 27 đơn vị của Bộ đội Biên phòng. Các đơn vị này nhận nuôi mỗi năm 400 cháu học sinh; hỗ trợ 3.254 cháu trong năm 2022, và các năm 2023, 2024, 2025 mỗi năm 5.437 cháu. Qua 4 năm triển khai đã có 122 học sinh đạt giải ở các kỳ thi các cấp, 2.559 học sinh đạt danh hiệu xuất sắc và giỏi, 2.046 học sinh đạt khá, 100% các cháu được lên lớp. Giúp dân xóa đói giảm nghèo Cũng theo Thiếu tướng Văn Ngọc Quế, cùng với việc triển khai các nhiệm vụ quản lý, bảo vệ chủ quyền an ninh quốc gia, làm nòng cốt để xây dựng nền biên phòng toàn dân vững chắc, Bộ đội Biên phòng còn thực hiện có hiệu quả nhiều chương trình giúp dân xóa đói giảm nghèo ở khu vực biên giới, tạo sự lan tỏa sâu rộng trong cả nước. Tiêu biểu như chương trình "Xuân biên phòng ấm lòng dân bản" đã trao tặng bà con 17,66 tỷ đồng tiền mặt, 150 công trình dân sinh, 1.244 nhà Mái ấm biên cương, 454 con bò giống và nhiều quà tặng khác, tổng trị giá khoảng 270 tỷ đồng. Hay chương trình “Con nuôi đồn biên phòng” được triển khai từ năm 2016. Với chương trình này, hàng năm, các đơn vị bộ đội biên phòng nhận hỗ trợ và nuôi 3.000 lượt học sinh từ lớp 1-12, trong đó có gần 200 học sinh ở khu vực biên giới giáp Lào và Campuchia, mức hỗ trợ là 500 nghìn đồng/cháu/tháng. Đây cũng là đóng góp quan trọng của Bộ đội Biên phòng trong triển khai thực hiện các chương trình mục tiêu quốc gia, nhất là chương trình mục tiêu quốc gia phát triển kinh tế - xã hội vùng đồng bào DTTS và miền núi” - ông Quế nhấn mạnh. Góp phần xây dựng tương lai tươi sáng cho tuổi trẻ vùng biên cương Chia sẻ định hướng hoạt động trong thời gian tới, Phó Chủ nhiệm chính trị Bộ đội biên phòng cho hay mặc dù còn những khó khăn nhất định nhưng giai đoạn tiếp theo, dự án “Cán bộ, chiến sĩ quân đội nâng bước em tới trường” sẽ tiếp tục hỗ trợ cho hàng nghìn học sinh, góp phần xây dựng tương lai tươi sáng hơn cho thế hệ trẻ vùng biên cương của Tổ quốc. Với vai trò cơ quan chủ trì, Bộ Tư lệnh Bộ đội Biên phòng đề nghị Chính phủ, các cơ quan Trung ương, Bộ Quốc phòng tiếp tục quan tâm triển khai dự án trong giai đoạn 2026-2030 với nguồn vốn khoảng 500 tỷ đồng, bình quân 100 tỷ đồng/năm. “Dự án mang tính đặc thù, việc hỗ trợ các cháu học sinh học tập cần được tiến hành liên tục, dài hạn thì mới có hiệu quả. Do vậy, sau khi kết thúc giai đoạn 2026-2030, đề nghị các cơ quan chức năng, nhất là Bộ Dân tộc và Tôn giáo xem xét, báo cáo Chính phủ có cơ chế để cho phép tiếp tục thực hiện dự án trong những năm tiếp theo” - Thiếu tướng Văn Ngọc Quế nêu. Bộ Tư lệnh Bộ đội Biên phòng đã phối hợp với các cơ quan chức năng triển khai chương trình mục tiêu quốc gia phát triển kinh tế - xã hội vùng đồng bào DTTS và miền núi giai đoạn 2021-2025, đảm bảo kịp thời, chặt chẽ, hiệu quả, góp phần thực hiện tốt các mục tiêu đề ra. Ngoài ra, trong giai đoạn 2026-2030, Bộ đội Biên phòng được giao triển khai nhiều dự án trong chương trình mục tiêu quốc gia với số vốn đề xuất gần 9.000 tỷ đồng để đầu tư cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu cho vùng đồng bào DTTS và miền núi, ưu tiên các xã đặc biệt khó khăn, thôn đặc biệt khó khăn. Nguồn vốn này sẽ giúp giải quyết tình trạng thiếu đất ở, nhà ở, đất sản xuất; hỗ trợ nước sinh hoạt cho người dân vùng thường xuyên xảy ra hạn hán, xâm nhập mặn, vùng đặc biệt khó khăn, vùng cao chưa có nguồn nước hoặc thiếu nguồn nước sinh hoạt hợp vệ sinh; xây dựng đường giao thông nội vùng dự án và đường nối các điểm dân cư mới đến tuyến giao thông gần nhất; công trình thủy lợi nhỏ… “Đề nghị Thủ tướng và các bộ, ngành liên quan tiếp tục quan tâm ủng hộ, tạo điều kiện thuận lợi để các dự án phát triển kinh tế - xã hội vùng đồng bào DTTS và miền núi đạt hiệu quả cao nhất” - Thiếu tướng Văn Ngọc Quế chia sẻ thêm. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday pressed for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine before President Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meet. “I can’t imagine that the next meeting would take place without a ceasefire. So let’s work on that, and let’s try to put pressure on Russia because the credibility of these efforts, these efforts we are undertaking today are depending on at least a ceasefire from the beginning of the serious negotiations from next step on,” Merz said in a meeting Monday with Trump and other European leaders. On Friday, Trump met with Putin in Alaska amid a push from himself and his administration for an end to the war in Ukraine — a push in which they have not had much luck. The president then met with multiple European leaders and Zelensky at the White House on Monday, with Trump and the Ukrainian president holding a more even-tempered Oval Office meeting than in February. During the Oval Office meeting, Trump said a ceasefire may not be needed before arriving at a larger peace agreement, and he left open the chance that U.S. forces could take part in some peacekeeping force in Ukraine to stop further aggression in the future. In a Truth Social post Monday evening, Trump said that he had “called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy.” “After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself. The Trump administration restored a public database that showed how funding is apportioned to federal agencies following a recent order by a federal appeals court. Public access to the data was restored over the weekend, not long after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ordered the website be restored in a unanimous ruling. “To hear the Government tell it, the separation of powers hangs in the balance and only this Court can set things right. But when it comes to appropriations, our Constitution has made plain that congressional power is at its zenith,” U.S. Circuit Judge Karen Henderson wrote last week. Under the apportionments process, agencies are given limited authority to spend funding allocated by Congress in installments. Congress required the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to implement an “automated system to post each document apportioning an appropriation” as part of a legislative funding deal signed into law in 2022. The office was also ordered to “operate and maintain” the automated system for “fiscal year 2023 and each fiscal year thereafter” in another funding bill that also became law that year. But the website went dark earlier this year after the Trump administration said it could not continue to operate the system, arguing it contained sensitive information that could pose a threat to national security. Advocates have hailed the return of the tracker as a major win for transparency, as the administration has faced legal challenges in recent months over efforts to freeze funding already allocated by Congress. “Publicly disclosing apportionments helps protect against any illegal abuses or withholdings of funds as President Trump attempted to do when he sought to illegally withhold federal funds from Ukraine in exchange for political favors,” Donald K. Sherman, executive director and chief counsel for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said in a statement. “We are gratified that Congress and the public will not be left in the dark while this case proceeds, and we will continue to fight for the permanent availability of this information.” Cerin Lindgrensavage, counsel for Protect Democracy, also said in a statement Monday that access to the apportionment process “means we can finally see where OMB may have abused this tool to unlawfully delay spending.” Both groups sued the administration over the website’s previous takedown. However, Democrats have continued to raise scrutiny over the administration’s revival of the database, with some describing the website’s return as a “partial restoration.” “It should never have required months in court for this administration to begin complying with a truly basic and straightforward transparency requirement,” Sen. President Trump and European leaders met for a one-of-a-kind summit at the White House on Monday to push toward a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. But by the end of a marathon day of meetings, details on what such an agreement might entail remained elusive. One major bit of news did emerge: Trump announced he had called Russian President Vladimir Putin and is working on arranging a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He would then work on all three of them meeting some time after. A time and location, however, is to be determined. The high-stakes discussions between Trump, Zelensky and a host of European leaders who descended on the White House involved talks of establishing a ceasefire as a peace agreement is sorted out as well as what security guarantees for Ukraine would look like. Everyone seemed to keep the mood delicately cordial, keeping the focus on the collective goal of ending the war. Trump did not engage with questions that set him up to criticize Ukraine. European officials credited Trump for opening up a path to peace, and Zelensky repeatedly thanked Trump for his efforts to stop the war, a far different atmosphere from the one Zelensky was met with in February. European leaders appeared to support the idea of a trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelensky and Putin, though some stressed the importance of getting some type of ceasefire or commitment from Russia before that meeting takes place. “I can’t imagine that the next meeting would take place without a ceasefire,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said during a roundtable discussion. “So let’s work on that, and let’s try to put pressure on Russia because the credibility of these efforts, these efforts we are undertaking today are depending on at least a ceasefire from the beginning of the serious negotiations from next step on.” Trump was noncommittal to securing a ceasefire, suggesting it was not a prerequisite to finalizing a larger peace deal. “We’re going to let the president go over and talk to the president, and we’ll see how that works out,” Trump responded to Merz. “In the six wars that I’ve settled, I haven’t had a ceasefire. We just got into negotiations … so if we can do the ceasefire, great, and if we don’t do a ceasefire, because many other points were given to us.” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called a trilateral meeting to end the war “the sensible next step,” insisting that peace for Ukraine has to involve Ukraine. “Because I think if we can ensure that that is the progress out of this meeting, both security guarantees and some sort of progress on trilateral meeting of some sort to bring some of the difficult issues to a head, then I think today will be seen as a very important day in recent years,” Starmer said. Ahead of the bilateral meeting with Zelensky in the Oval Office, Trump punted on a question from reporters about security guarantees for Ukraine, turning to Europe as the potential first line of defense. “When it comes to security, they’re going to be a lot of help … they’re going to be the first line of defense because they’re there. They’re Europe,” Trump said. “We’ll be involved,” he added. “But we’re going to help them out, we’re going to be involved.” Trump has said it will be up to Ukraine to determine the issue of potential territorial concessions as part of any peace agreement, though he has at times indicated there will need to be “land swaps.” An image posted by a top White House staffer on Monday showed Trump and Zelensky standing in front of a map of Ukraine that outlined which areas were occupied by Russian forces. The overall tone of Monday’s meetings was markedly different from Zelensky’s last visit to Washington, when Trump and Vice President Vance accused him of being ungrateful for U.S. support and questioned his leverage in the war against Russia. Vance said nothing in front of cameras at Monday’s Oval Office meeting. Trump greeted Zelensky with a pat on the back, and Zelensky expressed his appreciation for Trump’s efforts to end the war on multiple occasions. The Ukrainian president specifically thanked first lady Melania Trump multiple times throughout the day for the letter she penned to Putin about the plight of children throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. President Trump had delivered the letter to Putin ahead of their meeting in Alaska on Friday. Zelensky gave Trump a letter from his wife to give to the first lady, also thanking her. Zelensky wore a black military-style suit after his outfit in February drew the ire of Trump supporters, and he appeared friendly with Trump during the family photograph in the White House with the European leaders. The Ukrainian president, surrounded by the European leaders, said he hopes that the “best” meeting may be in the future, suggesting his openness to talks with Putin. It was not immediately clear if Putin would agree to a meeting in person with Zelensky, or if Russia would agree to a peace deal that contained security guarantees for Ukraine. “I hope that we will find decisions and what is very important that all the sensitive things, territorial, etc., we will discuss on the level of leaders during trilateral meeting and President Trump will try to organize such meeting, and he said that he will come or not come. By Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Three U.S. Aegis guided-missile destroyers will arrive off the coast of Venezuela in the next 36 hours as part of an effort to address threats from Latin American drug cartels, two sources briefed on the matter said on Monday. President Donald Trump has wanted to use the military to go after Latin American drug gangs that have been designated as global terrorist organizations. The sources said the ships are the USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham and the USS Sampson. A separate U.S. official told Reuters that in total, about 4,000 sailors and Marines are expected to be committed to the Trump administration's efforts in the southern Caribbean region. That U.S. official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the additional commitment of military assets in the broader region would include several P-8 spy planes, warships and at least one attack submarine. The official said the process would be ongoing for several months and the plan was for them to operate in international airspace and international waters. The naval assets can be used to not just carry out intelligence and surveillance operations, but also as a launching pad for targeted strikes if a decision is made, the official added. Venezuela's communications ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Without referring to the warships, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday in an address that Venezuela will "defend our seas, our skies and our lands." He alluded to what he called "the outlandish, bizarre threat of a declining empire." Trump has made cracking down on drug cartels a central goal of his administration as part of a wider effort to limit migration and secure the U.S. southern border. The Trump administration in recent months has already deployed at least two warships to help in border security efforts and drug trafficking. The Trump administration designated Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel and other drug gangs, as well as Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua, as global terrorist organizations in February, as it stepped up immigration enforcement against alleged gang members. The U.S. military has already been increasing its airborne surveillance of Mexican drug cartels to collect intelligence to determine how to best counter their activities. The wife of slain New York Police Officer Didarul Islam, one of five people fatally shot at a midtown Manhattan high-rise last month, has given birth to a son, police announced Monday. Arham became the third child of Didarul and Jamila Islam, and they're all boys, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement Monday afternoon. "Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world," she said. "Arham joins his two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. Together, they will carry forward their father’s legacy of service and courage." Volodymyr Zelensky clearly learned some lessons from his calamitous Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump back in February. That much was apparent today just from the Ukrainian leader’s outfit. Back then, Zelensky took heat from Trump allies who felt that a suit—and not his trademark wartime ensemble—would have been more appropriate attire for an audience with the American president. Today, Zelensky showed up in a black blazer and a black collared shirt, earning praise from the same MAGA-aligned reporter who’d needled him about his sartorial choices six months ago—and from Trump himself. Zelensky, who met with Trump in the Oval Office before he was flanked by European leaders for a broader discussion, adjusted more than his fashion. He also heeded the urgent advice of his continental counterparts: Show Trump gratitude, and don’t take the bait. With everything at stake for his country, Zelensky began his meeting with Trump by thanking him and the first lady, Melania Trump, for delivering to Russia’s Vladimir Putin a “peace letter” asking him to look out for the welfare of children amid war. Zelensky then handed Trump a note from Ukraine’s first lady. “It’s not for you; it’s for your wife,” said Zelensky, a former comedian, prompting laughs around the room. When reporters asked him about the losses his troops were suffering, he pivoted to praising the U.S. president for his leadership. Trump smiled. It was a striking contrast to the meeting six months ago, when Trump, red-faced and angry, accused an agitated Zelensky of failing to show enough gratitude to the United States. After months of largely siding with Putin, he soured on Moscow in recent weeks and threatened sanctions before rolling out a red carpet on Friday in Alaska for a man accused of war crimes. After the two leaders met, Trump announced that working toward a full peace deal—not an immediate cease-fire agreement, which Kyiv wants—would be the best path forward. This alarmed European leaders, who rushed to be by Zelensky’s side in Washington today in a remarkable show of solidarity and an equally impressive feat of logistics. They also wanted to restore a cease-fire deal to the top of the agenda. That sticking point became something of a case study for how to manage Trump. The president gathered the Europeans into the White House’s East Room in a manner reminiscent of how he typically assembles his Cabinet, with members taking turns praising him. A similar dynamic developed with the European leaders today. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni touted a new chance for peace, telling Trump, “Something has changed, thanks to you.” Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, smiled politely when Trump veered offtrack and celebrated the U.S.’s recent trade deal with the European Union. One after another, the Europeans attested to the good-faith efforts of all involved to bring the war to an end. But then, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, after being sure to first thank Trump for his leadership, voiced the group’s belief that another summit with Putin could not occur without a cease-fire. Trump appeared cool to the idea. ”In the six wars I have settled, I haven’t had a cease-fire,” he replied. Trump called Putin in between meetings with Zelensky and the European officials this afternoon to loop him in, hopeful that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky would be possible. Trump said that once those two have spoken, he wants a trilateral discussion in which he would take part. Top European officials said that they remain cautiously optimistic at best about the prospects that U.S. mediation can end the Ukraine war, and some expressed skepticism with regard to Trump’s abilities and intentions. Yet they have little choice but to follow his lead: An end to American support for Kyiv—as fickle as it may be—would prove devastating to the Ukrainian cause. The Europeans were heartened by Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. could offer some sort of security guarantee for Ukraine. But Trump was noncommittal about the details, including whether the U.S. would lend financial support and perhaps even boots on the ground to a European-led security force established in Ukraine to deter another invasion. And despite White House officials saying this past weekend that Putin was willing to accept some sort of peacekeeping force in Ukraine, the Russian foreign ministry released a statement today in which it offered “a categorical rejection of any scenarios involving the presence of a military contingent from NATO countries in Ukraine.” In Alaska, Putin got applause and a warm handshake, a military flyover and a ride in the presidential limousine. By contrast, Zelensky was awarded little pomp and circumstance. The European leaders got even less: They were greeted on the White House driveway by the head of protocol, not by Trump himself. At times this afternoon, Trump’s attention seemed to wander from the matter at hand. He seized on the chance to speak to the media about far more than just the prospects for peace in Ukraine. He went on long tangents about his problems with mail-in election ballots and the failures, in his view, of Joe Biden. (Zelensky, having learned his lesson, just stared ahead blankly during these extended riffs.) Trump’s top advisers took to the airwaves yesterday to stress the need for concessions by both sides. That language irks Ukrainian and European diplomats who believe that Russia must withdraw from territory it has captured since February 2022, when it launched its full-scale invasion. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS’s Face the Nation that “in order for there to be an end to the war, there are things that Russia wants that it cannot get, and there are things that Ukraine wants that it’s not going to get. Both sides are going to have to give up something in order to get to the table.” Putin gave no indication on Friday that he was inclined to accept genuine reconciliation. And Russia shows no signs of stopping on the battlefield. At least 10 people were killed and 14 wounded in cities across Ukraine early today, just hours before Zelensky and the other European leaders arrived at the White House. Oklahoma will now pay $100 to anyone who catches a certain invasive fish within the state. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation announced the bounty for anyone who catches and reports a black carp, Fox 23 News reported. Anglers can claim the reward up to 10 times per month, but each catch will need to meet certain requirements. "Recreational anglers, including bowfishers, who happen to catch a black carp are eligible," Erika Sarvela, invasive carp biologist with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, said in a release. "They'll need to follow the correct procedure to ensure they receive payment for their catch." The bounty is part of the "Keep, Cool, Call" program, which is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It began in Illinois but has spread to several other states in the Mississippi River basin. Arkansas announced its own $100 bounty under the same program earlier this summer. Black carp were introduced to the United States in the 1970s to 1980s, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and are now one of four fish species known collectively as invasive carp. Just like other invasive species, black carp can spread quickly and use valuable resources that are needed by native plants and wildlife. They feed on mussels and snails, posing a threat to those local species. To claim the reward, anglers who catch a black carp in a "Keep, Cool, Call" state should humanely kill the fish and put it on ice, as transporting a live black carp is illegal in the state. They should note the exact location of the catch, as well as the type of gear used and conditions. That information, along with photos of the fish's head, mouth, and whole body, must then be sent to the proper state officials. And if anyone isn't sure whether the fish is a black carp, they should still report it to the proper authorities. "Although the reward is only for the black carp," Sarvela said, "we still want anglers to report details about any other invasive carp caught in the state." Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is joining the Justice Department as the co-deputy director of the FBI, he announced Monday. Bailey is set to share duties as deputy FBI director with Dan Bongino, a staunch Trump ally whose future in the role came into question amid clashes over the case of the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. “I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Co-Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Bailey said in a statement. “I extend my deepest gratitude to President Trump and U.S. Attorney General Bondi for the privilege to join in their stated mission to Make America Safe Again.” Bailey was appointed Missouri attorney general in 2022 to replace Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), who left the post to serve in the Senate. Bailey won a full term as attorney general last November. Bailey has positioned himself as staunchly pro-Trump, including by defending the president amid his slew of indictments and legal problems in 2023 and 2024. He joins the FBI at a time when the agency’s leadership has been at the center of debate over releasing more information related to Epstein. The Justice Department and FBI issued a joint memo last month that stated Epstein did not have a client list and confirmed he died by suicide in his New York City jail cell in 2019. The findings incensed members of the MAGA movement, who have for years pushed conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death and claims that prominent Democrats would be named on a client list. Bongino was furious over the handling of the Epstein documents and clashed with Justice Department leaders, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, over the issue. Bongino, a former law enforcement officer turned podcast host, reportedly did not show up to work for a few days amid the uproar.
