View the full article
View the full article

View the full article
  7. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A man convicted of abducting a woman from a Florida Panhandle insurance office and killing her is scheduled to be executed Tuesday evening. Kayle Bates, 67, is set to receive a lethal injection at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison near Starke under a death warrant signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. It would be Florida's 10th death sentence carried out in 2025, further extending the state record for a single year. Two more executions are planned within the next month. Since the U.S. Supreme Court restored the death penalty in 1976, the highest previous annual total of Florida executions was eight in 2014. Florida has executed more people than any other state this year, while Texas and South Carolina are tied for second place with four each. Bates was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and attempted sexual battery in the June 14, 1982, killing of Janet White in Bay County in the Florida Panhandle. Bates abducted White from the insurance office where she worked, took her into some woods behind the building, attempted to rape her, stabbed her to death and tore a diamond ring from one of her fingers, according to court documents. Attorneys for Bates have filed appeals with the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as a federal lawsuit claiming DeSantis’ process for signing death warrants was discriminatory. The federal lawsuit was dismissed last Tuesday, with the judge finding problems with the lawsuit's statistical analysis. The court ruled that even if the numbers were correct, they wouldn't necessarily prove discrimination. On the same day, the Florida Supreme Court denied Bates' pending claims, including arguments that evidence of organic brain damage had been inadequately considered during his second penalty phase. The court ruled that Bates has had three decades to raise these claims. A U.S. Supreme Court decision is still pending on Bates' final appeal. A total of 28 men have died by court-ordered execution so far this year in the U.S., and at least 10 other people are scheduled to be put to death in seven states during the remainder of 2025. Curtis Windom, 59, is set to become the 11th person executed in Florida on Aug. 28. He was convicted of killing three people in the Orlando area in 1992. David Pittman, 63, would be the 12th person executed in Florida if his death sentence is carried out as scheduled Sept. 17. He was found guilty of fatally stabbing his estranged wife’s sister and parents at their Polk County home before setting it on fire in 1990. Florida executions are carried out using a three-drug lethal injection: a sedative, a paralytic and a drug that stops the heart, according to the state Department of Corrections. 8. Aaron Boudot thought he was going to die. It was July 26, and moments before, Boudot had shielded his wife from a stranger’s blade during a terrifying knife attack at a Michigan Walmart. So that stranger — whom authorities later identified as Bradford James Gille — began slashing him, slicing an artery in his right arm and stabbing him in the back, Boudot recalled. “I lost three liters of blood in definitely less than 40 seconds,” Boudot, 41, said in his first interview about the mass stabbing, which injured 11 people. “I wasn’t going to last long. I said my goodbyes.” Thanks to another stranger who quickly tied a tourniquet “in exactly the right place,” Boudot said, those goodbyes were premature. A man carries a knife while running inside a Walmart near Traverse City, Mich., on July 26. (Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office)Boudot recalled his near-death experience as NBC News obtained security video from inside the Traverse City Walmart that shows a man believed to be the attacker running through the store with a large green bag strapped to his back. He appears to jab at customers who, in some cases, can be seen tumbling to the ground. The victims were ages 29 to 84. Nine were treated and released, the facility that treated them said in a statement this month. Two were treated and transferred. All are expected to survive. Gille, 42, has pleaded not guilty to charges of terrorism and assault with intent to murder. He is being held at a psychiatric facility with bond set at $1 million, and he is scheduled to appear at a hearing Friday to determine whether he’ competent to stand trial. Authorities have not publicly identified a possible motive, though they've said the victims don’t appear to have been predetermined. Gille’s lawyer didn’t respond to a request for comment. His brother told NBC affiliate WPBN of Traverse City that he has long suffered from mental health issues that have gone unaddressed, even though his family has sought help. “It’s been 28 years of trying to deal with this and it’s like we knew this was coming but not in this form,” the brother told WPBN. Another victim told NBC affiliate WDIV of Detroit that she believes the attack illustrates the failure of the mental health system. “I just felt nothing but pity for this boy, because he’s never had a chance,” said the woman, who was stabbed in the upper back and the right lung. Boudot, who works for a mortgage company, said his family had gone to the Walmart to get sidewalk chalk — he and his wife have four children — when a store employee said there was a fight. Seconds later, Boudot, who was in the produce area, recalled seeing a man with his hat pulled low appear to try and touch his wife’s neck. He said he “brushed” the man away, blocking what he initially believed was a man trying to touch his wife. “That was the only one that I blocked,” he recalled. “All the rest reached their target.” Boudot said he was stabbed five times. Despite the carnage, Boudot said his general lack of faith in humanity was renewed by the actions that followed from those around him: A stranger “wrapped their arms around all four of my kids because my wife’s in shock," and an elderly man applied the tourniquet. That lifesaving technique gave him the chance to make it to the hospital, he said. “And that gave me a chance with a vascular surgeon,” Boudot said. “So it’s just unbelievable.” This article was originally published on NBCNews.com View the full article
  9. Above the teeming shopping streets of Hong Kong's Causeway Bay district, a fight to save one of the world's most endangered species is unfolding high in the branches of a decades-old cotton tree. Nestled among its sprawling boughs is a nest box designed for the yellow-crested cockatoo, of which only 1,200 to 2,000 remain in the world. Although the birds are native to East Timor and Indonesia, one-tenth of those left are found in Hong Kong -- the "largest cohesive remaining wild population" globally, according to Astrid Andersson, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hong Kong. Their future now hangs in the balance, due to habitat loss and, some suspect, a black market for the rare birds. The cockatoos' numbers have stagnated, with far fewer juveniles than when Andersson began monitoring almost 10 years ago. The birds don't make their own nests but depend on natural cavities in trees -- about 80 percent of which have vanished in recent years, because of typhoon damage and government pruning. The nest boxes set up by Andersson are an attempt to rectify this, designed to resemble the hollows sought out by the birds. She plans to place about 50 around the city. "Without the nest boxes, I believe that the cockatoos will have fewer and fewer opportunities to increase or replace individuals that die in their population," she said. The boxes will also allow observation of their reproductive behaviour, which has never been comprehensively studied. - Human-wildlife coexistence - The cockatoos' existence in Hong Kong has been "a very positive story about human-wildlife coexistence", said Andersson. The population in Hong Kong is an introduced one, with one urban legend recounting they originated from an aviary set free by the British governor of Hong Kong before surrendering to the Japanese in 1941. There is no evidence to support that story, however -- the modern flock's ancestors are in fact believed to be escaped pets. Hong Kong's urban parks, full of mature trees bearing fruit, nuts and other food, became a "sanctuary" for them, Andersson said. The cockatoos are now part of the city's fabric, their loud squawks echoing through the sky at nightfall. Perched on streetlights, they sit calmly observing the humming traffic along city flyovers. Many people don't realise they are looking at an endangered species in their neighbourhood. "We genuinely thought they were just like an average parakeet," resident Erfan, who lives near a flyover, told AFP. Yellow-crested cockatoos are often mistaken for sulphur-crested cockatoos, commonly found in Australia rummaging through bins. The two are genetically distinct though, and the Australian species is not endangered. - Black market? - Merchants at Hong Kong's bird market certainly know the difference. When AFP visited, sulphur-crested cockatoos were openly displayed, while yellow-crested ones were only shown upon request. A one-year-old bird was being sold for a whopping HK$56,000 ($7,000), while a two-month-old chick could sell for HK$14,000. It has been illegal since 2005 to trade wild-caught yellow-crested cockatoos. Selling ones bred in captivity is allowed, but the breeders must have valid licences under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). There are no such registered breeders in Hong Kong. Sharon Kwok Pong, founder of Hong Kong Parrot Rescue, believes there may be a "black market". "There have been people that find out where these birds are, they raid them," she told AFP. Captive-bred cockatoos should have a ring on their leg and documentation proving their origin, but these can be falsified. "I think we need a crackdown," Kwok said. "If you want to protect a species, so unique in this environment, I think a lot of things need to fall into place." -'A backup population' - Andersson has developed a forensic test that analyses a cockatoo's diet to determine whether it was recently taken from the wild. She hopes this will help enforce the ban on illegal sales. In their native habitats, poaching, rapid habitat loss and climate change have devastated the cockatoos' numbers. The financial hub's birds may one day be able to help revive them. "Hong Kong's population could have genetic lineages that are now gone," she said. It could function "as a backup population for the wild Indonesian counterparts". jl-yz/reb/mtp View the full article
  10. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a major Democratic leader and rumored presidential candidate, signed a bill into law opening student financial aid to all residents, regardless of immigration status, opening a pathway for illegal immigrants residing in the state to receive educational financial benefits. The move was slammed by conservative Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., as rewarding illegal immigrants and a "slap in the face" to Illinois families and students. The bill purports to establish "equitable eligibility for financial aid and benefits" for all students in the state. The bill reads that "a student who is an Illinois resident and who is not otherwise eligible for federal financial aid, including, but not limited to, a transgender student who is disqualified for failure to register for selective service or a noncitizen student who has not obtained lawful permanent residence, shall be eligible for financial aid and benefits." Illinois Gov Calls For Mass Protests Against Trump Admin: Gop 'Cannot Know A Moment Of Peace' The law extending financial aid benefits to illegal immigrants was signed by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat and rumored 2028 presidential candidate. One of the bill’s sponsors, state Sen. Celina Villanueva, a Democrat, celebrated Pritzker signing the bill by saying in a statement that "this law is about making sure no student is left behind because of where they were born." Read On The Fox News App A statement by Villanueva’s office said that the measure "eliminates the patchwork of confusing and sometimes conflicting requirements that have excluded undocumented, DACAmented, and mixed-status students from critical aid." The law pertains to any student residing in Illinois, making him or her eligible for financial aid programs funded or administered by the state, local governments, or public universities, according to the statement. The statement said that the law "builds upon Villanueva’s long-standing advocacy for immigrant and first-generation students by creating a more consistent and inclusive pathway to accessing support." Pritzker, governor of Illinois, center, attends the National Governors Association Winter Meeting in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023."If you live in Illinois and are pursuing higher education, you should have access to the same opportunities as your peers," said Villanueva. "Illinois invests in all of our students, and we’re committed to helping them succeed." Commenting on the legislation, Miller told Fox News Digital that "allowing taxpayer-funded financial aid for illegal aliens is a slap in the face to hardworking Illinois families and students." "Our state is drowning in debt, yet JB Pritzker is determined to drain even more taxpayer dollars to reward illegals," she said. "It's absolutely shameful." A spokesperson for the Illinois GOP also chimed in, telling Fox News Digital that "once again, Governor Pritzker proves that he is prioritizing illegal immigrants at the expense of Illinois families." Blue State Republican Calls On County Sheriffs To Defy Sanctuary Law, Dem Governor Rumored For 2028 Run Congresswoman Mary Miller, R-Ill., called the law "absolutely shameful," saying, "Our state is drowning in debt, yet Gov. J.B. Pritzker is determined to drain even more taxpayer dollars to reward illegals.""Illinois taxpayers should not have their hard-earned taxpayer dollars pay for benefits to illegal immigrants who shouldn't be here in the first place," added the spokesperson. Pritzker’s office declined Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Villanueva’s office had not replied to Fox News Digital’s request for comment by the time of publication. 11. The Texas House of Representatives’ committee on redistricting voted out of committee Monday evening a new version of a bill with proposed new congressional maps after it considered a version with some changes from the originally proposed maps. This sets up the bill to be considered on the House floor, after the House’s calendars committee schedules it, which means the new maps are set to continue moving forward. The Texas House reached a quorum earlier Monday after Democrats returned to Austin ending a two-week standoff with Republicans over proposed congressional maps, potentially clearing the way for Republicans to approve changes that could net Republicans as many as five new House seats next year. MORE: Texas Democrats get boost from Obama for blocking GOP redistricting plan The House later referred the new version of the bill that includes new congressional maps to the redistricting committee, a procedural move that the House has to follow again because it has started a new legislative session. The House did not take any votes and adjourned until Wednesday. President Donald Trump pushed Republicans in Texas to redraw their congressional maps and Gov. Greg Abbott called a special session to take up redistricting and other issues. On Monday, the president urged legislators to pass the new maps "ASAP!" "It is one of the most popular initiatives I have ever supported. Republicans love watching us fight for a Great Cause. Please pass this Map, ASAP," Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform. Burrows said that civil arrest warrants remain in force for Democratic members who prevented the House from reaching a quorum over the past few weeks. Brandon Bell/Getty Images - PHOTO: In an aerial view, the State Capitol is seen on August 14, 2025 in Austin, Texas."The House has been through a tumultuous two weeks, but this institution long predates us and will long outlast each of us," Burrows said. "Representatives come and go, issues rise and fall, but this body has endured wars, economic depressions and quorum breaks dating back to the very first session. It will withstand this too, and what will remain is a chamber where the majority has the right to prevail, the minority has the right to be heard." State Rep. Nicole Collier, one of the Democratic members who had left the state to break quorum and prevent voting on the proposed maps, was stuck in the statehouse as of Monday night because she refused to agree to a law enforcement escort, according to a statement released by the Texas House Democratic Caucus. Burrows laid out strict conditions for the members who broke quorum and returned. On Monday morning, he said that the “call of the House," meant to help secure a quorum by locking doors and compelling members to return, was still in effect. Burrows said that House members who had civil arrest warrants out for them for denying quorum would be allowed to leave the House only if they got written permission and agreed to be put into the custody of a law enforcement officer who would ensure they return on Wednesday. Collier wrote in a statement that she had refused to agree to this condition and to be followed by law enforcement. "I refuse to sign away my dignity as a duly elected representative just so Republicans can control my movements and monitor me with police escorts. My community is majority-minority, and they expect me to stand up for their representation,” Collier said. Democrats say that they are going to build a "legal case against the discriminatory map". The new maps are widely expected to be hit by lawsuits if they pass the legislature. "We killed the corrupt special session, withstood unprecedented surveillance and intimidation, and rallied Democrats nationwide to join this existential fight for fair representation — reshaping the entire 2026 landscape," Democratic Caucus chair state Rep. Gene Wu said in a statement. "We're returning to Texas more dangerous to Republicans' plans than when we left." At least one House Democrat, state Rep. Aicha Davis, said in a statement Monday she would not be one of the Democrats who would help restore a quorum. "I made a commitment to my district that I would fight until the end to keep our representation intact and I'm staying true to my word," Davis said in a statement. Democratic state Rep. Erin Zwiener said at a news conference after the House adjourned that Democrats are tapping legal and voting rights experts, and from the floor, "We are going to build a record that helps the legal fight go forward; we will try to persuade our [GOP] colleagues to do the right thing, but quite frankly I'm disappointed in the level of moral courage I see from a lot of my colleagues. And we're going to speak about the real impact of these districts." Asked if there was any chance Democrats leave the state again, Zwiener said that all options remain on the table and that she would not discuss strategy, After the Texas state legislature began a second special legislative session on Friday and failed still to meet quorum, Republican legislators are expected to try for a quorum Monday and then to work to advance the new maps, which will have to once again pass through the House's redistricting committee and procedural votes. Separately, Democratic state legislators in California formally unveiled their proposed legislation to get new congressional maps on the ballot in November, saying that it will be a counter to Texas if it moves forward with its proposed new congressional maps. Lawmakers did not get into the specifics of the map or the nitty-gritty of the legislation, but said it would be a constitutional amendment that would include maps, as well as affirmation for the state's independent redistricting commission and language that triggers new maps only if other states move forward with mid-decade redistricting. But Republican legislators said the move, pushed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, is not only overtly partisan but could threaten democracy in California. Speaking to reporters in the state Capitol, they said that the proposed legislation subverts the will of voters in California. They also said they were critical of Texas' redrawing effort and wanted independent redistricting nationally. "Governor Newsom, this is nothing more than a power grab. It's a gamble, and we as Republicans here in Sacramento say we want non-partisan citizens redistricting for the whole country, and it is the role model that we have," state Sen. Tony Strickland told reporters. Democratic governors in Illinois and New York have also threatened to respond to Texas in kind and a bill in Maryland's Democrat-controlled state House would force the state to change its map if another state proposed a new map mid-decade. Republican-controlled Florida and Missouri are also reportedly considering redistricting before the midterms. The Trump administration has invited Indiana Republicans to the White House next week to hear from senior officials and Cabinet secretaries how they can partner with the administration to support Trump's agenda, according to an invitation reviewed by ABC News. A source with knowledge of the event told ABC News that it's expected that redistricting will be discussed as the White House ramps up pressure on Indiana state lawmakers to redraw congressional districts ahead of next year's midterms. Vice President JD Vance traveled to Indiana earlier this month to discuss redistricting with lawmakers at the state capitol. ABC News' Hannah Demissie contributed to this report. 17. Kevin Costner is testing out new waters. The actor is set to star in his first-ever comedy after he left his acting role on the hit TV show "Yellowstone" for a rather disappointing "Horizon," which performed poorly at the box office. Kevin Costner starred in "Yellowstone" as the main character, John Dutton, who saw him try to salvage his ranch from a company looking to gobble it up as part of its expansion. Kevin Costner Will Team Up With Jake Gyllenhaal On Their New MovieMEGAThe 70-year-old reportedly inked a deal with Amazon MGM studios to star in a drama and comedy titled "Honeymoon with Harry." He would reportedly be acting alongside the "Brokeback Mountain" star. Costner's new project will be his first film after "Horizon" underwhelming performance at the box office. The movie centers on Gyllenhaal's character embarking on a trip with his late fiancée's father after he loses his would-be wife days before walking down the aisle. Costner and Gyllenhaal's movie, based on Bart Baker's 2016 book "Honeymoon with Harry," will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Despite "Horizon" turning out the way it did, the star actor expressed his contentment with the movie's outcome. Per The Daily Mail, Costner emphasized that the process it took to make such a masterpiece was the most important thing to him. The Oscar Winner Is Not Softpedaling On His Career Anytime SoonNews Licensing / MEGADespite walking away from the series and "Horizon" turning out how it did, the only way for Costner is up. He explained that for him, retirement has never popped into his head; he simply moves to the next big thing. He affirmed that his imagination controls him, not by a boss who calls the shots behind the scenes. The actor is also very aware of how lucky he is, but it did not happen by chance, only by pure hard work, which is almost exclusive to him. Costner also does not have a bucket list of how he wants his life to turn out; he shared that his eyes are always wide open for the next big thing, and his enthusiasm is on a high. "I go through that whole idea, and you realize it's about time. It's a rush to get to all of them," the TV star explained, noting that some great surprises are in the future. He also revealed his plans to dabble in writing as his career dives into a much exciting second half. The 70-Year-Old Still Has High Hopes For The 'Horizon' FranchiseMEGAThe star is not backing down from his positivity on "Horizon" as a franchise. Last September, The Blast noted that the actor admitted that he is used to people being initially dismissive of his works. According to him, he is fully convinced of his talent and is sure this film will stand the test of time and leave a lasting impact. In his words: "But they can't be dismissive of 'Horizon' because now it's out of their hands. And they might point to the finish line – well, this is what it did at the box office." The star continued that the movie promises enough longevity for parents to show their children decades down the line. He noted that the movie will provide a glimpse for future viewers to understand how their ancestors dealt with the past. He added that the movie touched on several topics, including the history of migration and survival instincts adopted by ancestors. Costner Was Dragged Into a Sexual Harassment LawsuitKCS Presse / MEGACostner was named in a sexual harassment lawsuit in May by an individual named Devyn LaBella, who claimed their encounter during a scene for "Horizon 2" left her feeling traumatized. As reported by The Blast, LaBella explained that she was hired to stand in for actress Ella Hunt as a stunt double during physical scenes. However, things took a different turn in 2023 when Hunt refused to shoot an intimate scene with co-star Roger Ivens. Ivens was slated to mount Hunt while violently tugging at her shirt; a directive Hunt refused, prompting Costner to allegedly instruct LaBella to stand in for Hunt. The stunt expert claimed that Costner failed to prepare her for the task ahead adequately, refused to seek her consent, and failed to install appropriate measures in place for the performance. LaBella claimed the development brought her shame and humiliation, making her feel a lack of control. Upon her return to the set after taking some time to cool off, she was practically ostracized and asked to stay in the trailer throughout. Kevin Costner's Attorney Slammed Devyn LaBella's Harassment StoryBG002/Bauergriffin.com / MEGACostner's lawyer came through with the disclaimer, adding that the extra layer of evidence she reportedly provided to back up her allegations was not convincing enough. He stressed that her alleged rape situation did not play out the way she had presented it. According to the attorney, LaBella was rehearsing for an Insert Shot for a scripted scene with zero intimacy involved. "There was tugging on a dress while she was fully clothed in a dress with long bloomers lying down next to a male actor," the lawyer emphasized. The legal rep noted that several witnesses had text messages and proof that LaBella's experience was seamless on set. Instead, the stunt expert was filled with gratitude towards the movie's supervisor for granting the opportunity to learn and appear in the project. View the full article
  18. The Brief FEMA could be on the ground in southeast Wisconsin this week, surveying the flood damage. After surveying the damage, the governor can ask the president to declare a major disaster. FOX6 spoke to a business owner in Butler who said he could use FEMA assistance after his printing business was damaged. BUTLER, Wis. - Federal money could help you with flood damage, but state and federal leaders still have to follow additional steps to get to that point. Next, the Federal Emergency Management Agency needs to join the state in an assessment of damages, something Gov. Tony Evers requested last week. FOX6 reported on Friday, Aug. 15, that Milwaukee County’s executive said he heard FEMA could be in Wisconsin Monday, August 18. However,, a Milwaukee County spokesperson on Monday said county leaders heard unconfirmed reports it could be later this week. Collapsed roadwayIt would be just one of several more steps. That included some of the 120,000 books that were ready to ship before the storm. Dan Ries estimates $300,000-$400,000 in damage. They’re estimating it could take 10 semi-trucks to get all of this damaged paper to the recycler. Ries Graphics floodingAnd then there’s equipment like the flooded compressor and flooded forklift. "So it flooded everything in it," said Ries, as he showed his broken forklift. "They’re so busy with damaged goods that I can’t get anybody out to look at it." Ries’s insurance isn’t covering the damage, since it was caused by a flood. He’s hoping FEMA might help. "It was a national disaster for me, for sure. This was a huge loss," said Ries. "I hope they consider us for some funds, because it sure would keep the operation going. We have 50 people who depend on working here every day." There are several steps before federal aid could help Wisconsin flood victims. Damaged goodsFEMA processWhat we know "We'll get that information up to the state, and then they'll get it up to FEMA and FEMA, and then FEMA will be on the ground. But I don't have the exact date of that," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson on Monday about the local damage assessments. Next, FEMA will visit Wisconsin to estimate damage, which Gov. Evers requested last week. When that wraps, the governor can ask the president to declare a major disaster. "I personally have not been contacted by the federal government or FEMA, but I know that our office of emergency management, as well as the Wisconsin Emergency Management Board, has been in contact with FEMA," said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley last week. "I've heard that there may be representatives from FEMA on the ground as early as Monday, but I think there's more to hear about that. So more to come on that last question." Then, on Monday, a county spokesmen clarified: "County officials have heard unconfirmed reports that FEMA is anticipated to arrive later this week. Once we have a confirmed date, we will share that information with the public." For comparison, in 2008, President George W. Bush declared a major disaster nine days after flooding and about 24,000 Wisconsinites got some FEMA help, an average of roughly $4,000. "I run the business where I keep money aside for a rainy day. And we had a really, really rainy day, so we’ll come through this just fine," said Ries. As the printing company continues the work it's been doing for four generations, now entering the fifth generation. Waukesha County estimates $63 million in damage to homes and businesses, and $4 million to public property like Campbell Drive that washed away in the flood, and is now a massive cliff and crater. Across the nine counties around Milwaukee, 211 reports 17,000 damage reports. About 83% were in Milwaukee County. The Source FOX6 spoke to Ries Graphics to produce this story, and Milwaukee County officials have provided information about FEMA potentially being in Wisconsin to survey the damage. 20. View the full article
View the full article

  23. San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt was tossed from their matchup with the San Francisco Giants on Monday night after he started arguing a fan interference call in the outfield. Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit a home run shot to left field in the second inning of the contest at Petco Park on Sunday night, though his ball just barely cleared the outfield wall. Giants left fielder Heliot Ramos nearly robbed it, too, but the ball very clearly bounced off of his glove and into the stands. A fan, however, also attempted to grab the ball right above Ramos’ glove as was coming down. The fan missed and didn’t actually make contact with the ball, but Ramos still pointed and blamed the fan for the missed catch after the ball went out. Despite the fan appearing to completely miss the ball and Ramos, a review determined he had actually interfered with the play. That negated the home run, and kept the Giants’ four-run lead in place. Shildt came out to argue the outcome of the review, which led to his automatic ejection. The Giants took off in the first inning on Monday night. Ramos and Rafael Devers each hit solo home runs to get the night started, and then Wilmer Flores hit a two-run shot of his own to give them the four-run lead early. The Pares entered the night on a three-game losing skid, which came at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers and sent them back into second place in the NL West standings with a 69-55 record. The Giants came into the four-game series in San Diego with a 60-64 record, solidly in third in the divisional race. This post will be updated with more information shortly. View the full article
