The fallout from Donald Trump’s summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week continues to grow. On Friday, Trump flew to an apparently impromptu meeting with Putin, shaming America by greeting like an honored guest the man who’d ignited the largest war in Europe since Hitler. The whole misbegotten summit was likely driven more by Trump’s desire to change the news cycle (especially after weeks of anger from his own base about the Jeffrey Epstein files) than by any real chance of securing an agreement. What happened after the handshakes, as the two men went behind closed doors in Anchorage, remains a secret, but it couldn’t have been pleasant for the American president. When the two leaders emerged, Putin spoke first and said very little of substance except to reiterate his insistence on solving the “root” causes of the conflict. Trump mumbled his way through a few minutes and took no questions. Then both presidents got on their planes and went home. Later, a haggard Trump tried to put a happy face on the failure in Alaska; on Friday night, he quietly told Sean Hannity that Volodymyr Zelensky has “got to take” Putin’s deal, implying that the United States was endorsing Putin’s demand to freeze the front lines and partition Ukraine. Such an arrangement would give Russia some breathing space while leaving it free to attack again in the future. Trump’s attempt to spin the Anchorage meeting, however, did not sway Zelensky or several European leaders, who in an extraordinary show of diplomatic concern all rushed to Washington two days after Trump’s return. In contrast to Zelensky’s previous visit to the White House, when he arrived alone to be ambushed and insulted to his face by Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance, this time the Ukrainian president came to town accompanied by the leaders of five NATO nations, along with the NATO secretary general and the president of the European Commission. The Alaska summit was never a good idea, especially without some signal from Putin that he was actually ready to stop the killing, but the response from European leaders is the clearest evidence yet that Trump was on a path to selling out Ukraine to the Kremlin. Fortunately, someone at today’s meeting appears to have talked Trump out of the idea of trading land for a temporary peace, an especially encouraging change because the White House already had a map of Ukraine in the room that seemed to be color coded almost perfectly in line with Putin’s wishes. When the group discussion concluded, Trump called Putin and then issued a somewhat scrambled statement on Truth Social, in which he said that he had gained the Russian dictator’s assent for a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky. The plan—such as it is at the moment—to put Zelensky and his team in a room with Putin makes little sense. Trump believes that he can arrange a one-on-one meeting, with no mediators, between Putin and the man Putin is trying to kill every day, to be followed by a trilateral meeting among Putin, Zelensky, and Trump. The American president has backed away from his calls for a cease-fire, saying instead that he’s solved several wars without a cease-fire. Meetings require some level of basic agreement among the principals in order to produce results. Both sides have to have at least some shared goals; otherwise, such meetings are not negotiations but two sides reading each other their demands across a table. Without the pressure of further U.S. sanctions or more arms to Ukraine, Putin is likely to meet Zelensky only to renew his demands that Kyiv surrender and certify Putin’s gains, an ultimatum to which Zelensky cannot agree. The Russians, for their part, are being a bit more cautious about Trump’s offer of further negotiations. Their readout of the call tonight said that the Kremlin supports “continuing direct talks” and that Trump and Putin have “discussed raising the level of the contacts.” None of this verbiage means anything: Putin can easily afford to say that he’s thinking it over, and he loses nothing by humoring Trump while Russian forces continue to pulverize Ukrainian cities. Still, it could have been worse. The Europeans, for now, seem to have moved Trump away from a land-for-peace deal, in which a grim handover of Ukrainian territories and the people who live in them would have been followed by haggling with Putin over what a “security guarantee” means. At the least, the mini NATO delegation achieved the minimum goal of stopping Trump from announcing some screwball plan to give Putin chunks of someone else’s country, and if kicking the can down the road while promising more talks averts an American-imposed partition of Ukraine, that’s good news for Kyiv. Trump did, however, buy time for Putin, who has never been in as much of a hurry for a peace deal as Trump. Setting up a bilateral meeting with Zelensky and Putin while the fighting goes on will take a lot of planning—especially because the only thing Putin appears to want is to destroy the Ukrainian government and take over the country. Such a meeting could happen, but without a cease-fire or a basic agreement on Ukraine’s existence, it would yield little more than Putin reiterating his demands, declaring Zelensky the obstacle to peace, and then continuing the war. Perhaps the Europeans did the best they could, stiffening Trump’s spine a bit after whatever browbeating he took in Alaska. But in the end, all of Trump’s showmanship has resulted in no substantive progress. Putin’s war continues. That said, Alaska is still part of the United States, America is still in NATO, and Kyiv remains free—and in this second Trump presidency, perhaps that counts as a good-enough day. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday thanked his “friend,” Russia’s Vladimir Putin, for briefing him on Putin’s recent meeting with US President Donald Trump. Modi is caught in the geopolitical “game of chicken” between Washington and Moscow, The Indian Express wrote: India wants Trump to reverse his tariff penalty over its economic ties to Russia, while still maintaining friendly relations with Moscow. Washington is ramping up pressure, with Trump’s top trade adviser slamming India’s dependence on Russian energy as “opportunistic and deeply corrosive of the world’s efforts to isolate Putin’s war economy.” Chart showing India-Russia trade.— J.D. 6. Summer Heat Wave Moves Into Southern California This Week originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Motorists drive west towards the setting sun on a warm afternoon in Long Beach. A warming trend is expected to raise temperatures. throughout Southern California through the weekend. (Luis Sinco / Los Angeles Times)Luis Sinco / Los Angeles Times via GettySouthern California is gearing up for a major heat wave this week, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees in many areas, and heightened wildfire dangers across parts of the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that the Inland Empire and other inland regions will experience the most extreme conditions, while coastal areas will see relatively milder — though still above average — temperatures. “The most significant heat wave of the summer season, so far, is on the way middle to latter parts of this week and into next weekend, especially Wednesday through Saturday,” the NWS said. The NWS issued fire weather watches for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the Antelope Valley foothills and the Santa Clarita Valley from Wednesday through Saturday. According to the NWS, the combination of “heat wave, low humidities, instability and critically dry fuels,” creates a heightened risk of large plume-dominated fires. The Inland Empire will be most impacted. Riverside is expected to climb from a high of 89 degrees on Sunday to 101 degrees by Thursday and Friday. San Bernardino could reach 104 degrees at the end of the week, while Redlands may see a high of 103 degrees. Although forecasters hope for relief next week, temperatures will likely remain above seasonal averages. Even Southern California's coastal and urban centers will feel the effects. Downtown Los Angeles is expected to climb from a high of 84 degrees on Monday to 90 degrees by Thursday and Friday. Anaheim, Long Beach, Pasadena, Torrance, West Covina and Whittier will all see steady rises in temperature — some expecting increases of more than 10-16 degrees over the week. “These are well-above-normal temperatures that are going to be capable of causing heat stress,” said Ariel Cohen, an NWS meteorologist in Los Angeles. “Those susceptible to these conditions should start preparing now.” Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak heat, and be mindful of the elevated wildfire danger, particularly in the foothills and mountainous regions. 12. View the full article
  13. This App Is Making Safe Driving a Fierce Competition Among South Korean Drivers originally appeared on Autoblog. Safe driving is the new form of bragging rightsIn South Korea, the country that's home to popular automotive brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, traffic safety is taking a positive, more conscious turn with fewer incidents over the past five years. But while the local governments in municipalities and major cities in the United States, like New York City, have implemented traffic safety initiatives like Vision Zero to help take action and spread awareness, a new report shows that the most prominent South Korean tech companies are making a positive impact on their country's roads through a smartphone maps feature that drivers use as badge of honor. Tmap MobilityAccording to a new report by The Korea Herald, the "driving score" feature of popular smartphone map applications has had a positive impact on drivers and their behaviour on the open road. In 2016, Tmap Mobility, a company spun off from SK Telecom's mobility division, introduced the "driving score" feature to its flagship Tmap application, the most popular of several applications that function similarly to Waze or Google Maps in the country. The application records the score using the user's smartphone's built-in accelerometer to track movements like acceleration, braking, cornering, and speeding. In essence, the smoother and cleaner you drive, the higher your score and the more points you earn, which can be used towards discounts on car insurance and/or gift cards. Getty ImagesAccording to data released by Tmap last year, over 19 million drivers participated in the Driving Score program, and more than 10.1 million of them scored well enough to secure insurance discounts. Although similar programs are offered by insurance companies like Progressive and Allstate in the United States, Tmap, along with other South Korean tech giants such as Naver and Kakao, makes this information public, ranking drivers against one another. “It is one of the few score-based competitions in Korea where everyone benefits when scores rise,” Chun Ji-yeon, senior researcher at the Korea Insurance Research Institute’s mobility center, said. “Safer driving lowers accident risk, insurers save on claims, and drivers save money. It is a rare alignment of interests.” Tmap claims that their contribution has yielded real results in road safety statistics. According to their internal data, Tmap claims it has prevented 31,336 traffic accidents between 2018 and 2020. Over the years, the South Korean government has made strides to tighten its traffic laws, including the deployment of more speed cameras and tougher drunk driving and school zone speeding laws. Tmap Mobility View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article In addition, cutting-edge safety tech like automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist in cars (especially in the ever-popular Hyundai and Kia models in the country) has contributed to the decline. However, Seo Beom-kyu, head of the traffic safety division at the Korea Road Traffic Authority, notes that the apps do something that the government couldn't do by itself. “Enforcement and better technology are still the main drivers of change in road safety,” he said. “But the private-sector model adds something new. It rewards good behavior, which government programs struggle to do at scale.” According to government data, the number of traffic accidents in South Korea fell from 223,552 cases in 2014 to 198,296 in 2023. During this time, the number of accidents per 10,000 vehicles decreased from 2.0 to 0.9, while fatalities per 100,000 people declined from 9.4 to 5.0. NaverAlthough researchers in the country argue that the motivation to provide such services is purely a marketing and branding scheme for both insurance companies and navigation app providers, for Tmap and similar app users, the benefit is much more than just an insurance discount; it's a flex on social media. “When I got a perfect 100 [score] last month [on the Tmap application], I posted it online like a medal,” Incheon-based app user Lee Ji-yeon told The Korea Herald. “It made me think more about how I drive, even when no one is watching.” However, other drivers told the Herald that they found some loopholes. “If I have to drive in heavy traffic, I switch to Naver so my Tmap score doesn’t drop,” Seoul-based app user Kim Min-su said. “It might sound silly, but last year it saved me almost 200,000 won (~$144) on insurance.” Final ThoughtsWould such a thing work in the United States? It might be tricky to get off the ground. In recent years, insurance giants such as Allstate and Progressive, as well as auto manufacturers, have faced lawsuits and scrutiny from lawmakers over the handling of drivers' data. However, in remarks to the Korea Herald, Hyun Chul-seung, the head of the Traffic AI and Big Data Center at the Korea Road Traffic Authority, noted that the "public square" element of these scores and ranking is the sauce that makes Tmap Mobility and the other tech giants' features work, noting that the South Koreans have “a deep familiarity with measurable performance.” “From school grades to fitness apps to delivery driver ratings, we are used to seeing our performance compared to others,” he said. “Here, it has found a relatively healthy outlet.” This App Is Making Safe Driving a Fierce Competition Among South Korean Drivers first appeared on Autoblog on Aug 18, 2025 This story was originally reported by Autoblog on Aug 18, 2025, where it first appeared. 17. Norwegian prosecutors on Monday announced that they have indicted the eldest son of Norway’s crown princess on multiple charges including rape after a lengthy investigation. Oslo state attorney Sturla Henriksbø said Marius Borg Høiby could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted, broadcaster NRK reported. The indictment filed in Oslo district court includes 32 counts, among them rape, abuse in a close relationship against one former partner and acts of violence against another. Other charges include making death threats and traffic violations. Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, has no royal title or official duties. He has been under scrutiny since he was repeatedly arrested last year on various allegations of wrongdoing. He is free pending trial, and Henriksbø said there is currently no reason to arrest and jail him. Henriksbø estimates the trial could begin in mid-January and take around six weeks, NRK reported. Defense attorney Petar Sekulic said in an emailed response to the indictment that “our client denies all charges of sexual abuse, as well as the majority of the charges regarding violence.” He added that Høiby “will present a detailed account of his version of events before the court.” The royal palace said that it was up to the courts to handle the case and reach a decision, and it had nothing to add beyond that. 18. Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro on Monday said he would deploy 4.5 million militia members in response to US "threats," after Washington raised the bounty for his arrest and launched anti-drug operations in the Caribbean. "This week, I will activate a special plan with more than 4.5 million militiamen to ensure coverage of the entire national territory -- militias that are prepared, activated and armed," Maduro announced on state television. Official figures say the Venezuelan militia, founded by Maduro's predecessor Hugo Chavez, contains about 5 million people -- though the actual number is believed to be smaller. Venezuela's total population is around 30 million. Maduro lambasted "the renewal of extravagant, bizarre, and outlandish threats" from the United States. The administration of US President Donald Trump earlier this month doubled its bounty to $50 million for the arrest of Maduro, who faces drug trafficking charges. Washington, which does not recognize Maduro's past two election victories, accuses the Venezuelan of leading a cocaine trafficking gang called Cartel de los Soles. The Trump administration announced sanctions against the group and Maduro's administration last month. The US military has also reportedly deployed several vessels to the southern Caribbean, as part of Trump's crackdown on Latin American drug cartels. "We are also deployed throughout the Caribbean...in our sea, our property, Venezuelan territory," Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said. Although he did not mention the recent US actions specifically, Maduro thanked those who expressed their support in the face of what he called "rotten refrain" of threats. Maduro called on his government's political base to move forward with the formation of peasant and worker militias "in all industries." "Rifles and missiles for the peasant force! To defend the territory, sovereignty, and peace of Venezuela," declared Maduro. mbj/pgf/nn/des/sla View the full article
  19. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — With the start of the fall semester at the University of Arkansas comes the ‘red zone,’ a period from the start of classes to Thanksgiving break when there’s a higher risk of sexual violence than at any other point in the year. The risk increases due to events like football games, Greek initiation and other new environments for students, like nights out on Dickson Street. To help reduce the risk of harm, a popular late-night food spot, Yancey’s Dickson Street Dogs, is offering a safe place on Dickson Street for anyone who needs it. Cody Yancey, owner of Yancey’s, is a Razorback alumnus, United States Army veteran and a Northwest Arkansas native. He offers his cart as a safe spot for anyone who may need help. “Oftentimes, I’m here at least until 4 a.m., if not later, and there’s just not a lot of people out there, especially any businesses open that even see it. So I’m uniquely positioned in the right place to help, and I’m certainly willing to help,” Yancey said. Yancey offers his establishment a place for anyone to sit if you’re in an uncomfortable situation, need help getting home, or need to charge your phone. Yancey says no questions will be asked, and no purchase is required. “Whatever it is, they’re welcome to come hang out with us. And, we’ve got ice-cold water and some food, which helps sometimes. But oftentimes, you just need a safe, calm area to be for a little bit and maybe something to help. So we’re happy to do that,” Yancey. Yancey adds he has been trained on recognizing opioid overdose, along with carrying Naloxone kits in his cart. Yancey wants to reach beyond selling hot dogs, which he’s done for the last two decades. “After I graduated college and decided I want to continue doing this, you kind of want your career to check a few more boxes. So, I found a way to do that. It means a lot to me to be able to give back to the community. It means that what I’ve chosen for a career is more meaningful to me,” Yancey said. 21. View the full article

The officers were identified as Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada of the Tremonton Garland Police Department. Local mayor facing 4-count indictment, accused of striking fleeing suspect A sheriff’s deputy and a police dog also were shot and wounded in their car as they arrived to help at a neighborhood in Tremonton on Sunday night. The deputy from Box Elder County was released from the hospital on Monday, and the dog was hospitalized in fair condition, police said. “These officers are definitely heroes,” Police Chief Chad Reyes in neighboring Brigham City said at a news conference Monday morning. When police respond to domestic disturbance calls, “we really don’t know what we’re walking into,” he said. “And they are one of the most dangerous events that we can be dispatched on.” Police received multiple 911 hang-up calls from a home in the city. A single officer from the Tremonton-Garland Police Department arrived first and was speaking to someone at the home when the man came out with a gun, police said in a news release. Reyes said he believed the man lived at the house. A second officer from the department who responded was immediately fired upon by the same male suspect,” and was killed, it said. After the officers were shot, bystanders persuaded the man to put down his weapon, police said. Up to 50 officers from multiple agencies responded. SWAT teams arrived to clear the home and verify that there was no further threat, police said. The ranch-style home was cordoned off by yellow crime scene tape on Monday. A trampoline and a blue children’s pool could be seen on the front lawn. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called what happened “a terrible and tragic night.” He posted online that he joined the state in mourning the loss “of these courageous law enforcement officers.” The man was arrested on charges of aggravated murder, police said in the news release. 23. The Brief Buchanan Mayor A.J. Scott faces vehicular homicide charges for a 2015 crash. Prosecutors say he was driving 90 mph in a 45 mph zone. Two teens, Kylie Lindsey and Isabella Chinchilla, were killed in the collision and two others were seriously hurt. HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. - Jury selection has begun in the retrial of Buchanan Mayor A.J. Scott, who faces vehicular homicide charges in a crash that killed two teenagers in 2015. What we know Prosecutors say Scott was a Georgia State Trooper at the time of the crash, but did not have his lights and sirens on. They allege he was driving 90-miles-per-hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone and was not responding to a call. The crash in 2015 killed 17-year-old Kylie Lindsey and 16-year-old Isabella Chinchilla. Soon after, Scott was fired from the State Patrol and charges were filed. In 2019, a judge declared a mistrial after the district attorney’s office allegedly withheld evidence. Jury selection for the retrial began today and could take a few days. The Supreme Court of Georgia has since ruled he could be retried. What they're saying The teens' mothers have spent years fighting for a conviction in the case and to get him out of public office. RELATED STORY: Mayor 'acted like a fool' during drunken episodes while criminal case still unresolved "He's not fit to be a mayor," Leslie Woods, mother of 16-year-old victim Isabella Chinchilla, said in a 2023 interview. The backstory The crash was captured on Scott’s patrol car dash cam. In bodycam audio, Scott can be heard explaining the collision. "I was making the left turn right there," Scott said. A deputy replied, "And you didn't see him?" Scott responded, "I saw him, I tried to I went right when I should have went down. Making that left." An outside investigation confirmed Buchanan Mayor A.J. Scott abused his authority by repeatedly demanding police give him rides because he was too drunk to drive. Despite those findings, the four-member city council took no action regarding Scott's status as mayor. Leslie Woods and Kellie Lindsey do not live in Buchanan, but the two moms follow the mayor’s every wrong move. That’s what happens when you blame him for the death of your teenage daughter. "Other than losing his job with the Georgia State Patrol when he killed the girls, he has had a great life to live," complained Lindsey. On a dark road in September 2015, trooper A.J. Scott T-boned a car with four teenagers as they tried to turn left in front of him in Carroll County. The driver said he never saw Scott who was speeding through the 45-mile-per-hour zone, no sirens or blue lights activated because he wasn’t responding to a call. Scott was not drinking. The crash killed the two girls in the backseat, Kylie Lindsey and Bella Chinchilla. Neither wore their seatbelt. "I think AJ is not thinking about anybody but himself," said Woods. "He thinks he’s above the law." Scott’s first prosecution ended in a mistrial. What's next The victims’ loved ones have been instructed not to speak to the media during the trial. "I’m just afraid it’s going to take him killing someone else before he’s stopped," Lindsey said in 2023. If convicted on all charges, Scott could face up to 30 years in prison. 25. NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Earlier this year, New Mexico lawmakers stopped short of banning cell phones in schools—but they did pass a bill requiring every school district to implement a wireless communication device policy. The goal: give local educators the flexibility to address distractions from cell phones and other devices in ways that best suit their students. So, is the new law making a difference in the classroom? Story continues below Sports Office: The foundation and legacy of UNM baseball with Ray Birmingham Trending: New Mexico Game and Fish says viral ‘horned rabbits’ possible in the state New Mexico Crime Files: A trail of loose change leads police right to the thief’s door Don’t Miss: EPA approves more storage at WIPP, causing capacity concern Sen. Crystal Brantley (R-Turth or Consequences) emphasized the law’s local-control approach. “The policies will be very different depending on each school district because it’s up to the local school district on what that policy is going to look like. Some of them may simply say keep the phone in your backpack or lockers while others may have actually gone the extra mile to purchase lock bags and actually lock up those cell phones during cell phone hours,” Brantley explained. While the law only mandates that districts have a policy, some schools decided to adopt stricter rules this year. “This year we decided that we needed something a little bit more,” said Cindy Orthman, principal of Quemado Independent School, west of Socorro. At Quemado, students are now required to place their phones in lock boxes for the entire school day—a step Orthman says is already paying off. “Because when they’re in their backpacks, you’re still getting the notifications, you’re still hearing the buzzing of Snapchat or Instagram, whatever’s going off,” she said. Just two weeks into the school year, Orthman is already seeing a shift in student behavior. “The engagement from the time they walk in the door, to finding their peers, eating, and socializing, and just being present, is night and day from what it was last year,” she said. Orthman said the overall goal isn’t just about discipline—it’s about teaching students to balance their screen time. She says she’d recommend the policy to other schools, but acknowledged that having only 90 students in the school’s 7-12 grades, no doubt, makes the lock-box policy easier to manage than a school with thousands of students. In Santa Fe, Mandela International Magnet School took a different approach. After attempting a full ban last year, the school has eased restrictions this year by adopting Santa Fe Public Schools’ district-wide policy. It allows limited phone use at lunch and between classes, while continuing to ban phone calls, gaming, cameras, and the use of earbuds. Principal Randy Grillo said the school considered lock pouches but was told there was no funding for them. In his experience, phones aren’t usually a problem in classrooms—but rather in the in-between moments. “In the past, I’ve noticed the vast majority of discipline issues stem from something that’s being photographed and posted online, and so taking that avenue away in school has drastically reduced how many discipline issues we have at school,” Grillo said. Sen. Brantley believes that implementing consistent cell phone policies across the state is essential for student well-being. “A number of school districts that were not implementing or had any sort of cell phone policy. We needed them to acknowledge the abuse that’s happening with our students. We need to acknowledge the mental health crisis, the bullying, the negative impacts of what’s happening with the amount of time that our students are spending on the phone,” she said. She also stressed the role parents play in setting boundaries. “The number one indicator of student success is parental involvement. So while the schools are doing their part to restrict cell phone use, I encourage parents to encourage their students to get off their phones during dinner time, to have face-to-face conversations, and make sure they’re doing their part in home to restrict cell phone use as well.” Grillo echoed the importance of teaching personal responsibility. “If we can ultimately teach students to be accountable and make decisions that are the best for a greater community, we don’t have to take things away from them — because hopefully they’re being thoughtful in their decisions in the first place,” he said. The original bill, SB11, had earmarked $10 million for school districts that needed funds to implement a lock-box or lock-pouch system, but the funding was ultimately cut. “We will return this next legislative session to try to get that funding back in and to create a grant program to reimburse school districts,” said Brantley. While the Public Education Department is collecting copies of cell phone policies from every district across New Mexico, it remains unclear how many schools have actually implemented changes this year.
