Lucid Motors will offer $7,500 tax credit, which expires at the end of September for all EVs, for lessees of the Gravity SUV through a special program. The Gravity Advantage Credit initiative requires lessees to order a Lucid Gravity by September 30 and take delivery between October 1 and December 31 to still get the $7,500 credit. Lucid's second EV, which starts at $81,550 for the Touring model, faces an extended cast of German competitors but has the advantage of being produced stateside and is therefore not subject to import tariffs. The long-popular $7,500 tax credit is going away in a matter of weeks, thanks to the Big Beautiful Bill, but perhaps not for all EVs and not at once. Automakers are understandably concerned about the effect it might have on the sales of some if not all vehicles—those deep in six-figure territory never really benefitted from it. But the demise of the credit is expected to have an effect on quite a few automakers just as the end of the year clearance sales gain momentum. As a result, some lessees interested in Lucid's luxury SUV can still take advantage of the credit through the Lucid Gravity Advantage Credit initiative, launched just a few days ago. "We want to reassure customers who have already ordered a vehicle, which may not be built and delivered by the end of September, that they will still benefit from the $7,500 leasing tax credit, despite the impending expiration," the automaker said in a statement. The initiative offers those who qualify and order a Lucid Gravity by September 30 and take delivery between October 1 and December 31 to still get the $7,500 credit. "Our unique position stems from having specific color and trim combinations that only enter production in Q4," the automaker explained. Photo credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidPhoto credit: LucidIt is worth noting that this deal applies only to lessees of the Gravity, rather than buyers of the model, as it starts at $81,550 for the Touring model, and stretches all the way up to $141,550. With a dual-motor layout and 828 hp and 909 lb-ft of torque, the three-row SUV is powered by a beefy 123-kWh battery, which is good enough for 437 miles in the EPA cycle in seven-passenger form. But the Gravity will do 450 miles if optioned in five-passenger form. And it's NACS-compatible from the factory as well. "With the production of Lucid Gravity gaining significant momentum and increasing demand from both new and returning customers, Lucid aims to eliminate potential inconveniences and ensure customers can still benefit from the $7,500 leasing credit even after the federal EV Credit program expires on September 30," the EV maker said. Given the generous number of pricey, three-row electric SUVs on sale at the moment, the focus is already on the next Lucid model, expected to be badged Earth and arriving as a 2028 model with a starting price just below the $50,000 mark. Since the start of Lucid Air sales, the brand's offerings have been perceived as expensive, perhaps even hindering vehicle sales. The Earth is expected to finally address some of these concerns. Hearst OwnedOnce it arrives, the Earth will face an even greater cast of competitors than it does today, and will do so in what could be a very challenging tariff environment for foreign models. Due to the expectation that it will be built not in Arizona—like its first two EVs—but in Saudi Arabia, the tariff situation by 2027 or 2028 could certainly complicate matters for the automaker in terms of affordability. Can Lucid cut into Tesla's market share in the next five years, or will it perpetually be a lower-volume EV maker? Please comment below. View the full article

People are usually savvy enough to check whether their hospital or doctor takes their insurance. But it's often a mystery how much a medical procedure or operation will cost, even with coverage. A new report from Trilliant Health, a health care analytics company, shows how much prices for the same medical service can vary at different hospitals and surgery centers. Want a total knee replacement? It can cost as little as $12,870 or as much $101,527. An ankle replacement? An Austin, Texas, hospital charges $22,011 while a New Jersey hospital billed more than $197,000 for the same operation. These wide price swings can leave insured consumers with big bills, loans and medical debt. Using claims data from two major health insurers, Trilliant Health analyzed inpatient and outpatient rates charged by nearly 2,700 hospitals and 3,500 surgery centers. The report found prices can vary as much as nine-fold for the same operation or procedure. And hospital prices within the same state varied more than three-fold, the report said. Trilliant also analyzed 10 hospitals listed on multiple best hospital lists and found no link between higher prices and improved health quality. Allison Oakes, chief research officer for Trilliant Health, said the report aims to inform consumers and employers on health care prices so they can better gauge the value of services they are purchasing. Oakes said health care prices − and the discounted rates negotiated by insurance companies − historically have been a "very well protected industry secret." "The fact that we now have information related to price, we can hopefully begin to rein in our spending," said Oakes. Hospital prices drive health spending higherResearch shows such price variation is a key contributor to why health care costs so much more in the United States than any other nation. The U.S. spent $4.9 trillion in health care in 2023 − or $14,570 for every person. Despite spending more than any other nation, U.S. life expectancy is the lowest among large, wealthy nations, according to the Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker. Employers who pay for health insurance for working-age adults historically didn't have prices when deciding which hospitals and surgery centers to include in their workplace insurance plans' networks. Consumers with high-deductible health plans often pay thousands of dollars out of pocket before coverage kicks in. Or they often are charged coinsurance, which requires they pay a percentage of a medical bill. Over the past 25 years, the cost of employer health insurance premiums has nearly tripled the rate of workers pay raises, according to a 2024 study in peer reviewed Health Affairs. A major contributing factor: hospital prices. Under federal price transparency rules adopted earlier this decade, health insurance companies must disclose prices negotiated with hospitals and other health providers. Trilliant's analysis included prices negotiated by two national health insurers: UnitedHealth Group and Aetna. Will price transparency spur competition, lower prices?Researchers not involved in the Trilliant report have analyzed price transparency data and reached similar conclusions about widespread price differences. One study by Johns Hopkins University found prices of X-rays and CT scans varied more than 10-fold nationwide. The study found prices for the same scan in the same hospital nearly tripled based on different plans from the same insurance company, said Ge Bai, a Johns Hopkins University professor of accounting and health policy and management. Bai said the study underscores the lack of competition in health services. "We have a long way to go before we can reach a competitive market for health care prices," Bai said. Rice University's Baker Institute compared prices of three Houston hospitals and found large price differences negotiated by three health insurers: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, United Health and Humana. The biggest price gap: an overnight stay covered by a Humana PPO plan ranged from an average of $17,628 to $57,898 at different Houston-area hospitals. Vivian Ho, a Rice University economist who has studied hospital pricing, said employers can use pricing information to tailor their health insurance offerings to workers. "There is a great deal of opportunity for employers to take this information and start restructuring their benefits," Ho said. A large New York labor union attempted to steer employees away from New York-Presbyterian to other hospitals as part of a cost-savings move. The union, Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, requested the Justice Department investigate New York Presbyterian over claims that anti-competitive behavior kept hospital prices high. The Justice Department has launched an investigation into the high-profile hospital chain and its insurer contracting practices, according to a subpoena reviewed by the New York Times. A New York-Presbyterian spokesperson declined to comment. Another study of Massachusetts health plans that examined the use of tiered pricing that charged consumers higher copays if they chose more expensive hospitals. Consumers could choose copays of $250, $500 or $750, with the higher copays linked to more expensive hospitals. After three years, overall spending dropped by more than 8%, an indication consumers were willing to choose lower-cost copays and hospitals. Ho said the tiered copay approach is easier for consumers to understand health prices − and what steps they can take to lower their costs. "The average consumer doesn't understand the problem," Ho said. Consumers are quick to blame their insurer when health prices rise, Ho said. And while insurers have been scrutinized for practices such as prior authorization and service denials, the main driver of health insurance premiums are hospital charges for both inpatient and outpatient services, Ho said. "The hospitals and the consolidated health care systems are charging very high prices," Ho said. "And there's nothing in your health insurance benefit to stop you from going to the highest-priced providers." Email consumer health reporter Ken Alltucker at [email protected]. View the full article

Rachel Maddow shares the results of a new Pew poll in which Donald Trump not only remains more negative than positive on every major issue, but he is apparently growing more unpopular over time, even with people who supported him, and among people who feel strongly about him, many more people feel strongly negative than feel strongly positive. It's enough to make a guy want to find a way to avoid facing another election... View the full article

It was the best day Ukraine has had in a very long time. But it’s still hard to see how the war unleashed by Russia’s brutal invasion ends any time soon. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House on Monday and, unlike last time, there wasn’t a blow-up in the Oval Office. President Donald Trump offered tantalizing glimpses of how he could approach presidential greatness by saving Ukraine, securing Europe and genuinely deserving the Nobel Peace Prize. A phalanx of European leaders who came to support Zelensky were impressive and unusually unified despite their wide ideological divergences. They took turns in on-camera remarks to try to invest Trump with a political and emotional rationale for standing with Ukraine. A historic day echoed great political gatherings that ended World War II and built the modern world. This is how the West is supposed to work, with an American president leading powerful Europeans who share common goals. But is it too good to last? It is a measure of the fracture in the transatlantic alliance and Trump’s brittle temperament that avoiding disasters is seen as serious progress, especially after the president’s concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin at their unctuous summit in Alaska last week. Everyone at the remarkable meetings in the White House, Trump included, was ostentatiously doing everything to stress possibilities and to avoid specific discussions of issues that could blow the day apart. By evening, Trump was posting on social media about a potential three-way summit he’d host soon that would also include Zelensky and Putin that could be preceded by a one-on-one between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said such a meeting could happen within two weeks, suggesting accelerating diplomatic momentum. Finnish President Alexander Stubb told Trump that “in the past two weeks, we’ve probably had more progress in ending this war than we have in the past three and a half years.” For once, this wasn’t a foreign leader indulging in self-abasement to ingratiate themselves with a US president who craves adulation. It was the truth. It will get harder from hereMonday’s meetings were the most compelling sign yet that the president really means it when he says he wants to stop the killing in Ukraine. He may deserve more credit than he gets for his energy and commitment so far. But the day also served to expose the questions that will become increasingly evident in the coming weeks that could scupper Trump’s push for peace and shatter Western unity — in a way that would delight Putin. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaks as President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders on Monday in Washington, DC. - Alex Brandon/APThere was a lot of happy talk over the need to give Ukraine security guarantees after any peace deal. Trump even signaled he’d send support from the US military. But no one has yet explained how this would work — and, more importantly, what Russia would stomach as part of a deal. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni raised one proposal for a set of guarantees by Western nations modeled on NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense pledge. This would be outside formal alliance structures but might work the same way. But, despite Trump’s assurance after Alaska that Putin is open to security guarantees for Ukraine, this is a long shot. The Russian leader is fighting a war to crush his neighbor’s NATO aspirations. Why would he accept an arrangement that would offer pseudo-alliance status to Ukraine? And how strong would such guarantees be anyway? Would European nations who put troops into a Ukraine “reassurance force’ really fight a war against Russia, to save Ukraine from a new Russian invasion? The subtext of the current war has been the anxiety of both the Biden and Trump administrations over potentially being dragged into a war with nuclear-armed Russia. And how would Trump’s MAGA base view such a new foreign commitment? The cruel fallacy of ‘land swaps’Then there’s the issue of territory. The buzzword in the president’s nascent peace process is “land swaps” — to create a new demarcation between an expanded Russia and a newly diminished Ukraine. Trump even gave Zelensky a map, for which he was suitably grateful, as if he doesn’t already realize the tough choices ahead over land soaked in Ukrainian blood. According to officials briefed on Trump’s summit with Putin, the Russian leader seeks to capture land through negotiations that his troops have failed to seize, including in the economic and industrial powerhouse region of Donbas in eastern Ukraine. This area is also the line of steel, concrete and heavily defended cities that Ukraine has built to hold Russia at bay and that it would need to deter future attacks. The term “land swap” is the kind of phrase that conceals its true meaning. Ukraine would, under the Russian plan, essentially be engaging in bargaining for different parts of its own territory. Putin would get valuable strategic areas and offer, other less critical districts he’s already seized elsewhere inside Ukraine. It doesn’t seem much of a deal. Land swaps create epochal upheaval and seed future feuds — as the Middle East shows. In this case, they would mean telling thousands of Ukrainians they have must leave home or become Russians. And Zelensky would have to explain to parents of fallen young Ukrainians why they died for territory to be given to Putin. There are some formulations that could withhold official recognition over disputed areas to postpone the critical decisions on sovereignty and freeze the war in place. This would create a situation like the one between North and South Korea or in the divided Germany during the Cold War. But these are still choices that may be impossible for Zelensky to sell to his people. This explains why Monday’s discussions were surreal. “I think everybody is in a happy mood, and I think that is better than not being in a happy mood, I suppose,” former Trump first-term national security adviser John Bolton told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “I think the focus on meetings underscores the lack of substance on all this.” Every major peace effort looks hopeless at the start. Sometimes the only way to push past intractable issues is to create an inner impetus. So Trump’s rush to hold summits may make sense. Perhaps he can quickly drive everyone so far along the road to peace, it will be impossible to go back. But, at some point, impossible gaps must be bridged. “I don’t think what we are living through at this moment, where everybody seems a party to fantasy diplomacy, — I don’t think it is sustainable,” the Wilson Center’s Michael Kimmage, author of the book “Collisions: The Origins of the War in Ukraine and the New Global Instability,” told Richard Quest on CNN International. Trump has changed his tune on UkraineWhen Trump returned to office, many supporters of Ukraine feared he’d leave it to its fate. The president still balks at the kind of massive US military aid packages that saved the country after Putin’s vicious invasion in 2022. But Trump has now invested significant personal credibility and political capital into his push to end a war he now admits is far more complex than he’d understood when he vowed to quiet the guns within 24 hours. Underscoring the point, air raid sirens wailed over Kyiv while the diplomacy got going in the White House. President Donald Trump meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office at the White House on Monday in Washington, DC. - Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesOn Monday, Trump mostly restrained his temper in an Oval Office press event with Zelensky when reporters from conservative networks seemed to be goading him into an outburst. Then, he played the traditional convening role of a US president surrounded by transatlantic allies. He often treats friends like foes, but seems to have genuine respect for allied leaders. For once, he was squarely in the internationalist tradition of presidents like Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan or George H.W. Bush. “We’re all working for the same goal, very simple goal — we want to stop the killing, get this settled,” Trump said. Still appeasing PutinSeveral jarring moments, however, fueled concerns about Trump’s true loyalties in the peace process. He was caught on a hot mic telling French President Emmanuel Macron that Putin “wants to make a deal for me.” This shows a dangerous naivete about a Russian leader who launched a murderous unprovoked war and is bent on reviving a myth of Russian greatness. Trump then suspended talks with European leaders to go off to speak to Putin on the phone. This kind of behavior was exactly why Trump’s European counterparts rushed across the Atlantic at a weekend’s notice. Suspicion lingers about his capabilities and his commitment to Western security. Still, no one else can position himself between Zelensky and the leaders of Europe and Putin. If there’s ever a peace deal, it will probably be because Trump wielded his charisma and America’s power. It’s a highly unorthodox approach that may not work. Kimmage, for example, warned that Trump’s strategy could shatter over its inner contradictions. Trump is “trying to be all things to all people, he is meeting with Putin and welcoming him with open arms and seeming to come to some agreement. He is speaking about security commitments to Ukraine; he is praising European leaders for supporting Ukraine.” “There are no details to what is happening. It’s all promises, and the promises on the surface contradict each other.” “You just wonder how long President Trump can juggle all these balls.” Thousands of lives depend on the answer. Bubba Wallace suffered an embarrassing incident at Richmond Raceway when his left front wheel fell off immediately after a pit stop. He pulled into the pit stall for fellow Toyota driver Chase Briscoe, whose Joe Gibbs Racing pit crew reattached the stray wheel and sent Wallace on his way. As the Beatles sang, "I get by with a little help from my friends." Wallace was going strong, having just won the second stage of the race and running in second place before pitting, according to Road & Track. He came in for four tires and fuel, but drove away before the tire changers had secured the nut back onto the wheel. Despite the team's efforts to stop him, Wallace drove off, only for the wheel to quickly separate from the car. "Pull in right there," Wallace's 23XI Racing pit crew radioed to him as he entered Briscoe's pit stall, and he did as they instructed. The loose wheel caught up to Wallace, bounced off his car, and came to a stop. While the Joe Gibbs Racing crew did not perform a record-breaking pit stop in this case, they retrieved the wheel, jacked up the car, and put it back on, enabling Wallace to return to the race. This mistake cost valuable time, bumping Wallace back to 31st place, though his performance earlier in the race sealed him a spot in the Playoffs. Since the loose wheel never entered the track, there was no penalty for this. Read more: Cheap-Feeling, Underpowered, Or Just Ugly, These Cars Don't Justify Their Price What Happened Here?Initial reports indicated that the jack man had lowered the car too early, before the tire changers had finished securing the wheel. However, former Jalop Bozi Tatarevic offers a different explanation, which is visible in the NASCAR footage but far from obvious without his sharp eye. When the tire changers removed the left front wheel, the nut flew out of the socket and landed on the ground behind them, out of view. This shouldn't ever happen, as the specialized socket uses both an O-ring and magnets to hang onto the nut between jobs. NASCARWhen the tire changers put the new wheel on, the nut wasn't there. They noticed the missing nut immediately when they pulled the impact wrench away. They tried to attach it again, not realizing it was gone, but by then the jack was down and Wallace was already driving away. This looks more like a freak accident than a mistake on the part of the pit crew. The only failure appears to be the socket not hanging onto the wheel nut. Joe Gibbs Racing must have used a nut of their own to put Wallace's wheel back on and send him back to the track. Want more like this?
