  1. India Walton has a warning message for progressive Democrats during Donald Trump’s second presidency: don’t water down your politics to win over the establishment. The Democratic socialist who stunned the Democratic establishment by defeating a four-term incumbent mayor in Buffalo, New York’s 2021 primary believes moderating her leftwing message cost her the general election. It’s a lesson that carries new weight now that Zohran Mamdani secured his own victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary earlier in the summer and inspired thousands of other progressive candidates to also run for office. After disrupting the political base in the US by beating incumbent mayor Byron Brown in Buffalo’s Democratic primary, she says she pivoted toward the center – and lost. “Moderating is what got us here,” said Walton, now a senior strategist at RootsAction, referring to Donald Trump’s return to the White House. “I believe that moderating is what lost me ultimately the election in 2021.” “I pivoted fairly quickly … to try and integrate myself into the party, because I thought that was the way to build a broad based coalition,” she reflected. “It sort of ate away from our message from the inside out.” After initially opposing charter schools in the primary to win the Buffalo Teachers Federation endorsement, Walton later told business leaders she supported “school choice” – and lost the union’s backing for the general election as a result. She also distanced herself from the “defund the police” movement. Shortly after Walton won the primary that year, the establishment and investor-aligned Brown mounted an unorthodox write-in campaign and won, even though his race was marked by possible campaign finance violations including receiving contributions from real estate corporations in defiance of election law.. Brown, an ally of New York governor Andrew Cuomo and a former New York Democratic party chair, would step down in 2024 to serve as president and CEO of a western New York off-track betting company. But in 2021, there was widespread fear over Walton’s socialist tendencies, with the city even researching whether or not it should entirely abandon its mayoral system over her primary win. These days, Walton argues Democrats lost working-class voters by abandoning populist economics. “I think a part of the reason how we got a second Donald Trump presidency is that the Democrats have not had a message that appeals to working-class and poor people.” The establishment resists such policies because they’re “beholden to corporations and billionaires”, she added. “It’s not the message they want to hear, but it is the message that is resonant with the voters.” Walton’s analysis runs counter to some Democratic strategists who argue the party moved too far left after 2024’s losses. One post-mortem survey by the Progressive Policy Institute showed 68% of working-class voters believed the Democratic party had embraced overly progressive positions. Soon after Trump’s election win and swing state sweep, New York Times columnist Ezra Klein argued that the Biden-era Democratic Party reflected “a culture in which nobody is saying no to the groups at any level of American Democratic politics”. Yet last year, progressive ballot measures thrived even as Democratic candidates struggled. Voters across the country approved minimum wage increases, paid leave expansions, and other progressive economic policies, with red states embracing progressive measures even while supporting Trump, like Missouri where voters passed a $15 minimum wage and paid sick leave, or Nebraska where voters approved guaranteed paid time off. A July 2025 poll by Democratic pollster Celinda Lake for progressive network Way to Win found that Democratic voters who skipped 2024 want candidates more like independent Vermont senator Bernie Sanders and New York member of congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, suggesting the party’s problem may be insufficient progressivism rather than too much. One example Walton pointed to was the debate on “defund the police” that did damage to many progressive and centrist campaigns. The real message, which Walton said had been distorted, was about shifting police funding toward social services and mental health care. The slogan ultimately became a political liability. In 2020, centrist Democrats warned it had cost them over a dozen swing district House seats after Joe Biden’s presidential win and in Minneapolis, voters rejected a measure to overhaul policing even after George Floyd’s murder. In a pre-Mamdani New York City, Eric Adams ran explicitly against “defund the police” and won. Now Mamdani – a democratic socialist assemblyman who defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo with 56% in the final ranked-choice count – has given progressives fresh momentum all over again. His victory generated immediate enthusiasm, with Run for Something, a progressive group that urges young candidates to seek public office, noting that 10,000 people nationwide signed up to pursue public office within two weeks of his win. Walton sees opportunity in younger voters who don’t follow traditional political voting patterns. “Millennials are the first generation who are not becoming more conservative as they age.” Her advice to progressive candidates is simple: resist the pressure to compromise. “People hear hope in ‘we’re going to prioritize working-class people’,” she said. “People hear hope in ‘I’m not going to capitulate to the establishment and negotiate all of our power that we’ve built’. This is the right time.” View the full article
  2. US health secretary Robert F Kennedy claims that beef tallow is a healthier alternative to seed oils (even though the American Heart Association disagrees). Raw milk advocates are currently criticizing Kennedy, who has supported them in the past, to ease restrictions on the sale of their preferred dairy product nationwide. Meanwhile, cows have also infiltrated the ever trendy skincare market, with beef tallow present in moisturizers, lip balm, deodorant and personal lubricant. Though not every beef tallow evangelist or raw milk aficionado might consider themselves Republican, cow’s connection to RFK’s “health” crusade is unavoidable. It appears that cows have won the position of Maga’s favorite animal. It’s not exactly a secret that Trump loves cows. Last year, when a child called into Fox & Friends to ask what his favorite farm animal was. “I’ll tell you what I love, I love cows, but if we go with Kamala, you won’t have any cows anymore,” he said, adding: “I don’t want to ruin this kid’s day.” He made the bizarre talking point a part of his campaign stump speeches, telling crowds in North Carolina and Nevada that “they want to do things like no more cows.” Now that he’s in office, cows remain top of mind – or, at least, their byproducts do. Related: Cowboys and vegetarians: why American rightwingers see beef as a birthright “Woo-woo has become moo-moo,” the Atlantic’s Yasmin Tayag wrote this week, in an essay about Americans going “all-in” on “cow-based wellness”. “When it comes to animal products, it seems [that Maga] promotes cows the most,” said Mark Kern, a professor of exercise and nutritional sciences at San Diego State University. “They don’t seem to say the same things for chicken or turkey.” Pigs could be a close runner-up, as lard, another animal fat, was also used regularly in cooking until the early 20th century – a bygone era Maga loves to romanticize. It doesn’t hurt that cow mania follows the trend of tradwives taking up social media space, extolling the virtues of cooking, cleaning, child-rearing and homesteading. If Trump describes cities such as DC, Los Angeles and New York as fiery bastions of anarchy, then cows represent something entirely different: images of ruddy-cheeked children toting milk pails or Sydney Sweeney in a prairie dress. Of course, none of this is the fault of cows. “Beef can be a very healthful food when eaten in moderation,” Kern said. “I see value in it, but that doesn’t mean we should eat it at the expense of seed oils.” The Maha (Make America Healthy Again) crowd’s obsession with beef tallow is based on a “misperception” that it is less refined than seed oils, Kern explained. “You can’t just get beef tallow from a cow,” he said. “You have to render that fat, which is a refining process, too.” When I tell people that I use beef tallow, they kind of look at me like, ‘Oh, you’re a natural-living girly.’ Candice Ray, influencer Though there are no known benefits of consuming beef tallow, some chain restaurants such as Steak ’n Shake and Sweetgreen have switched to using it in the wake of RFK’s endorsement. Bart Hutchins is the chef of Butterworth’s, a nouveau French restaurant in DC popular with the Maga cohort. Last month, Hutchins told Axios that his kitchen goes through 500 beef bones a week serving a roasted marrow that is Steve Bannon’s “go-to” order. (Marco Rubio and the Breitbart staff apparently love it, too.) Bone marrow contains collagen, a protein that’s long been a beauty buzzword associated with reported cosmetic benefits such as skin, hair and nail health. It is a common ingredient in pills and powders that promise youthful skin, though dermatologists say this has not been definitively proven by any studies. That does not stop rich people from loving it. “If you describe something ‘with collagen’, it’s poised to move for a certain economic class,” Hutchins said. Candice Ray, a 24-year-old dietician student who splits her time between Canada and Vermont, liked beef tallow before it was taken on as a Maha status symbol. She has slathered it on her face every night for two years, swearing it transformed her rough, bumpy complexion into a clear, clean glow. “It’s done wonders for me,” Ray said. “My skin just looks more healthy.” To be fair, Ray – an influencer who shares “nontoxic living” tips to her following of nearly 350,000 on Instagram – adheres to other medically dubious practices such as not washing her face. You might assume that if you cover your face in beef tallow and go to bed without washing it off, you will end up reeking of barnyard musk. Ray disagrees. “I find it smells just slightly earthy,” she says. Ray is not exactly thrilled that Maga has taken up the cause of advancing beef tallow. “My choice to use it is not political whatsoever,” she said. “But when I tell people that I use beef tallow, they kind of look at me like, ‘Oh, you’re a natural-living girly.’” View the full article
  3. The Nebraska State Capitol. (Aaron Sanderford/Nebraska Examiner) LINCOLN — Nebraska’s first tax receipts of the new fiscal year saw overall revenues jump by about $20 million, though it’s not yet clear whether that means the state’s budget is back on track. The state Department of Revenue released Nebraska’s July tax receipts Friday, showing a net gain of 4.8% compared to what Nebraska’s Economic Forecasting Advisory Board had predicted in April. That jump equates to roughly $20 million in extra tax revenues flowing into the state’s coffers. State Sen. Robert Clements of Elmwood. (Courtesy of the Unicameral Information Office)July was the first month of the fiscal year, which spans from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. Nebraska ended its last fiscal year with net tax receipts down about $86 million from forecasts, leading to a new projected state budget deficit of roughly $95 million. The latest report came as a relief to State Sen. Rob Clements of Elmwood, chair of the Nebraska Legislature’s Appropriations Committee. He viewed the increase as a potential sign that Nebraska’s financial status is recovering after several bad months, though he acknowledged that only time will tell. However, the extra $20 million in tax revenues doesn’t necessarily mean the deficit will decrease by the same amount, according to Legislative Fiscal Analyst Keisha Patent. “It certainly could (reduce the deficit),” Patent said. “I don’t know that that’s a certainty.” SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE The forecasting board will consider multiple factors at its next meeting in October, Patent said. Nebraska’s receipts for July are among those factors, she said, along with August and September’s receipts, and the impacts of the federal budget reconciliation bill. The higher receipts were largely due to a rise in sales and use tax revenues, which came in about 30% above forecasts, equating to a net gain of more than $67 million. Patent had no immediate explanation for this growth, as she said July doesn’t normally see high sales tax returns. Clements said high sales tax revenue is likely a signal that Nebraska’s economy is flourishing. “It means people are spending, and they have money to spend,” Clements said. All other categories of tax revenues were below forecasts, including individual and corporate income taxes. Individual income tax receipts were down about 15%, equating to a $13 million loss. Corporate income tax receipts were down just over 1%, equating to a $316,000 loss. Patent said she’s received questions about why Nebraska’s income tax revenues have been down, considering the growth of the state’s overall economy. After several months of low revenues, many state officials expected Nebraska’s tax receipts would level off and eventually rise again. But Patent said that likely won’t happen for several more years, when the state’s phased decrease to income tax rates finally hits 3.99% in 2027. For now, she said any growth in Nebraska’s economy will likely be offset by the rate reductions. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX View the full article
  4. Alif Ramadhan/Getty Images As tornadoes become increasingly common across Louisiana, the city of New Orleans is considering a siren system to help people get to safety faster if a twister is approaching. Louisiana has been hit by more than 100 twisters since 2023, many of which have occurred at night and sometimes during hurricanes. Though most of those tornadoes caused relatively little damage, two people were killed last May by high winds and severe weather across the state. The West Bank of New Orleans and the community of Arabi in St. Bernard Parish were both struck by tornadoes twice in 2022, the second of which killed one. Currently, no parish in the state has a comprehensive outdoor warning system, commonly known as a siren system, to warn people to retreat indoors if a storm is approaching or other public emergency is taking place. Siren systems are common across “Tornado Alley” — Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and South Dakota — but in recent years, tornadoes have been shifting eastward, leading local emergency management officials to question whether it’s worth installing sirens in Louisiana next. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX Collin Arnold, the director of homeland security and emergency preparedness for New Orleans, said he has been “brought around” to the idea of installing a siren system as the technology has progressed in the last several years. “We typically associate outdoor warning systems with just sirens or tones, but they’re advanced to the point now where you can actually verbalize messages through them,” he said. In New Orleans, a siren system could also be used to alert people in situations ranging from imminent coastal flooding to active shooter threats, Arnold said. He pointed to recent natural disasters in the state, such as the Arabi tornado in 2022 — the strongest in the state’s history — as well as the mass floods in Texas that killed at least 136 in early July. “I have thought since that it is worth looking into,” he said. Arnold said he has been in talks with several national outdoor warning system manufacturers and estimates the cost of installing a comprehensive siren system across Orleans Parish to be around $10 million. Installing sirens on telephone poles or street lights, which already have a power supply connected, could minimize the cost, according to Arnold, who said he is asking potential siren contractors to look into the possibility of using existing infrastructure as a cost-saving measure. Ryan Dean is the founding partner and chief revenue officer at the outdoor warning systems company OmniWarn, one of the vendors Arnold said he contacted. Dean said the siren itself typically affects the total cost more than where it is installed. “Sometimes we’ll start with sirens at all of the parks, and then we’ll put them at all the schools, and slowly expand it out like that,” he said. “However…when I show [city officials] the price tag to do it all at once, they’re pleasantly surprised with how inexpensive it is.” Dean said OmniWarn charges between $30,000 to $50,000 per siren, each of which is designed to last decades. OmniWarn recently installed 30 sirens for $1.3 million in the east Texas city of Pasadena. Whether or not the city moves forward with installing sirens, Arnold said New Orleans residents should make sure they are subscribed to NOLA Ready text message alerts to get up-to-date information on any public emergency, from tornadoes to acts of terrorism. How effective are sirens?Debra Campbell, chairperson for A Community Voice, a local nonprofit for social and economic justice, has been calling on New Orleans to install an outdoor warning system since 2017. Campbell said city officials who claim text message and social media alerts are enough of a warning fail to recognize that many people do not have access to a cell phone. Campbell’s son, who has autism, would be far more likely to listen to a siren than a text alert, she said. “My son will probably not pay attention to an alert on the phone, but if you give him a deafening siren, then he’ll be aware that something is going on in the area,” she said. The city of Dallas is home to a comprehensive outdoor warning system that has been periodically expanded and updated over the years. John Patterson has managed the Dallas siren system for nearly 10 years. He called it “just one tool in our warning toolbox, if you will.” Patterson noted that outdoor warning systems can be used for a variety of public emergencies, from hail, high winds and other extreme weather, to chemical spills involving toxic fumes. When the sirens are activated, the office also posts alerts on social media. “If people hear it, they can’t assume that it’s a tornado issue,” he said. “It could be anything else. That’s why we tell people, when you hear it, go inside and turn on local radio and television news and find out what the situation is.” The sirens are tested once per month, weather permitting, to avoid confusing the public. Patterson said the city still occasionally gets calls from people who aren’t sure whether the test is real. Still, sirens have their limitations, said Samantha Montano, associate professor of emergency management at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, who began studying disaster relief after visiting New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. “Sirens don’t do as much as people think they do,” she said. “They tend to be more expensive and not quite as effective as the public thinks they are.” Montano pointed out how sirens can generally only be heard when outside, and sometimes can’t be heard over the loud sounds of a storm. She said focusing on more fundamental issues, such as the lack of tornado shelters across New Orleans, would be a more effective preparation tactic. A statewide questionAlthough nuclear power plants and universities across the state have used localized outdoor warning systems over the years, Orleans Parish would be the state’s first parishwide public siren system. It’s up to parishes as to whether or not to invest in such a system, said Mike Steele, communications director with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, though the state can assist with obtaining federal funding. In the aftermath of the Arabi tornado, the state legislature put together a task force in 2023 for emergency managers across the state to discuss future tornado preparedness. There, members of the public shared their desire for the city to invest in an outdoor warning system, Arnold said. In Lafayette Parish, emergency management officials are sticking with a text message notification system as the primary tool to notify residents about tornadoes and other emergencies, given cost constraints. “If we had all the money we wanted, yes, obviously we’d have sirens,” said Chad Sonnier, the parish’s top emergency management official. “However when you have limited funds, you try and get the most bang for your buck, and we think the system we have now is the way to go.” Last June, a tornado hit Youngsville, a city of 19,000 people located in the southern part of Lafayette Parish, damaging trees, trailers and power lines. Scott Gilbeaux, who lost his trailer home in the Youngsville twister, said he only learned about the tornado when he heard a loud sound similar to a train whistle close to midnight — a tell-tale sign of an impending tornado — and turned on the TV to see that one was on the way. “Thank god I was awake,” Gilbeaux said. “We don’t have [sirens] back here — we’re in the country.” Gilbeaux has since managed to get back on his feet with the help of family and friends. He said that with or without a siren system, at the end of the day, there is little that can be done ahead of a devastating natural disaster. “I’m not prepared,” he said. “What’s going to happen is going to happen.” In New Orleans, a “robust” public education program, including social media posts and coverage from news outlets, would be needed if the city were to install and periodically test an outdoor warning system, Arnold said. Regardless of the views of the public or disaster relief officials, Arnold said the decision-making power on whether or not to invest in an outdoor warning system lies elsewhere. Arnold said he has spoken to Mayor LaToya Cantrell and other city leaders about installing sirens and that the response has been positive. In a statement, the Mayor’s Office said the city is looking into the “feasibility, value and potential deployment of such a system.” “Ultimately it will be the elected leadership of the city — the mayor and the city council — that will determine from the will of the voters what direction we want to go with this,” Arnold said. 8. TORONTO (AP) — Air Canada said Tuesday it will gradually restart operations after reaching an agreement with the union for 10,000 flight attendants to end a strike. The union first announced the agreement early Tuesday after Air Canada and the union resumed talks late Monday for the first time since the strike began over the weekend. The strike is affecting about 130,000 travelers a day at the peak of the summer travel season. Canada's largest airline said flights will start resuming Tuesday evening. The union said the agreement will guarantee members pay for work performed while planes are on the ground, resolving one of the major issues that drove the strike. “Unpaid work is over. We have reclaimed our voice and our power," the union said in a statement. “When our rights were taken away, we stood strong, we fought back — and we secured a tentative agreement that our members can vote on.” Chief executive Michael Rousseau said restarting a major carrier is a complex undertaking and said regular service may require seven to 10 days. Some flights will be canceled until the schedule is stabilized. “Full restoration may require a week or more, so we ask for our customers' patience and understanding over the coming days,” Rousseau said in a statement. The airline said mediation discussions “were begun on the basis that the union commit to have the airline’s 10,000 flight attendants immediately return to work.” Air Canada declined to comment further on the agreement until the ratification process is complete. It noted a strike or lockout is not possible during this time. The agreement followed the union’s declaration that the flight attendants wouldn't return to work even though the strike was declared illegal. Earlier, Air Canada said rolling cancellations would now extend through Tuesday afternoon after the union defied a second return-to-work order. The Canada Industrial Relations Board had declared the strike illegal Monday and ordered the flight attendants back on the job. But the union said it would defy the directive. Union leaders also ignored a weekend order to submit to binding arbitration and end the strike by Sunday afternoon. The board is an independent administrative tribunal that interprets and applies Canada’s labor laws. The government ordered the board to intervene. Labor leaders objected to the Canadian government’s repeated use of a law that cuts off workers’ right to strike and forces them into arbitration, a step the government took in recent years with workers at ports, railways and elsewhere. “Your right to vote on your wages was preserved,” the union said in a post on its website. Air Canada operates around 700 flights per day. The airline estimated Monday that 500,000 customers would be affected by flight cancellations. Aviation analytics firm Cirium said that as of Monday afternoon, Air Canada had called off at least 1,219 domestic flights and 1,339 international flights since last Thursday, when the carrier began gradually suspending its operations ahead of the strike and lockout that began early Saturday. Toronto's Pearson International Airport, Canada's largest, said it will deploy additional staff to assist passengers and support startup operations. Passengers whose flights are impacted will be eligible to request a full refund on the airline’s website or mobile app, according to Air Canada. View the full article

  15. If you live in Florida and spot "pink blobs," make sure to keep your distance. They could be egg casings for exotic apple snails, an invasive and dangerous species that has spread quickly in the state's waterways and wetlands. What's happening?WKMG reported that these egg clutches are commonly found near freshwater or attached to concrete. While the eggs aren't a threat to humans unless they're eaten or touched — since they contain neurotoxins and can harbor the parasite responsible for rat lungworm disease — apple snails themselves are a nuisance to ecosystems. "In the last decade, apple snails have received attention because of their ability to damage wetland crops through foraging," the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explained. "Because of damage to crops, the channeled apple snail is listed as one of the world's worst invaders." The FWC stated that four exotic apple snail species have been spotted throughout the state: the island apple snail, channeled apple snail, spike-topped apple snail, and the titan apple snail. Among these, the channeled apple snail is by far the most destructive, as it feeds on numerous aquatic plants, algae, fruits, vegetables, animal carcasses, and even other snail eggs. Its voracious appetite can easily disrupt the state's sensitive wetland and freshwater ecosystems and make it harder for the native Florida apple snail to survive. Why are invasive apple snails concerning?Thankfully, it's easy to differentiate the invasive species from the native apple snail. The former's egg casings are always pink, while the indigenous ones are white and much larger than their non-native cousins. The invasive apple snails pose a much bigger threat to ecosystems and crops, as one clutch can contain up to 2,000 eggs, meaning there's huge potential for the creatures to cause significant damage. This destruction can directly impact people, as apple snails are known to feed on rice crops and cause extensive economic losses for farmers. The species was introduced to Florida in the late 1980s through the aquarium trade and is now pervasive across the state. Luckily, the species has plenty of native predators, including fire ants known to target the snails' eggs specifically, per Animal Diversity Web. Do you worry about having toxic forever chemicals in your home? Majorly Sometimes Not really I don't know enough about them Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Nevertheless, the apple snail poses a major threat to ecosystems since invasive species outcompete their native counterparts for important resources. What's being done about apple snails? As the FWC explained, the agency's ability to intervene is hindered by the exotic pet trade. However, if you spot apple snails, you can call the state's invasive species hotline or use its online tools to report sightings. If you wear gloves, you can also crush the eggs or scrape them off any surfaces where you find them. Awareness is growing about the nuisance pests, and state universities and water management companies are researching methods for large-scale removal. 22. View the full article
  23. Fast is fun! In the right places, anyway. Drop the hammer on, say, a 640-hp Porsche 911 Turbo S on a drag strip, and enjoy a raucous 10.1-second quarter-mile time. Do the same on a public road, and you'll run out of road faster than you can say, "I can feel the g-force in my stomach," then likely end up paying a hefty fine, in jail, or dead. When even Car and Driver — home of Brock Yates, co-creator of the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, where the point was to drive from New York to Los Angeles as quickly as possible — lists speeding among "the most dangerous things drivers do," you know it's not a matter of old fuddy-duddies trying to rein in fun. Checking out Visual Capitalist's U.S. speeding ticket map, the priciest minimum speeding ticket is in California, where you'll pay at least $234. Next is Arizona at $231, followed by Nevada and Texas tied at $223, with Florida rounding out the top five with a minimum $204 ticket. At $203 minimum, North Carolina is the last state with a base ticket north of $200. Then there are states that take it easy on your budget. The lowest 10-over ticket is a tie between New Mexico and Nebraska, at just $25. North Dakota ties with Montana for next cheapest at $40. Wow, between the $40 tickets and the low taxes, no wonder so many Montana residents own supercars. In Washington (the state), tickets start at $43, and in Washington (DC, the city), tickets are as low as $50. Only Utah sits at the national average of $130. By the way, these dollar amounts are the total for speeding plus court costs. (Data for the map comes from FinanceBuzz, which gathered speeding-ticket data from every state.) Read more: These Are The Dumbest Car Crashes You've Ever Seen Here's Where You're Most Likely Going To Get CaughtA black Porsche Macan speeds against a blurry background - Armands Photography/ShutterstockJust because a state slaps you with a speeding ticket that costs as much as dinner for two at a nice steakhouse doesn't mean it's likeliest to do so. According to Insurify, 8.7% of North Dakotans have speeding tickets on their record — more than double the national average of 4.1%. Sgt. Adam Malafa from the North Dakota State Highway Patrol told Insurify that doing 70 in a 55 costs a whopping $15, which may have something to do with the percentage. Maybe that pair of motorcyclists ticketed for 205 mph in Minnesota — among the fastest speeding tickets ever issued in the U.S. — didn't notice they'd crossed over from North Dakota and figured they'd get a slap on the wrist. Wait, FinanceBuzz says minimum tickets in North Dakota are $40. Head to North Dakota's Vision Zero website, where they're trying to cut traffic deaths, and the fee for exceeding the speed limit is "Varies." Perhaps court costs are $25? School-zone speeding tickets start at $40, though, which is a bargain. Oh, no, that's not a good way to put that. Wisconsin and Ohio are next likeliest, tied at 7.8% of drivers with speeding tickets. FinanceBuzz lists ticket minimums in Wisconsin as $175 and Ohio as $121, meaning speeding in these states might just be for the love of the game, costs be darned. Iowa and Idaho are tied at 7.1%, and Wyoming is next at 6.8%. As for the least-ticket-happy states, Simmrin Law Group pulled data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and found that only 1.78% of Connecticut drivers have speeding tickets, followed by Pennsylvania (2.54%), Texas (2.55%), Florida (2.79%), and Michigan (2.83%). Models of restraint, you states are. The Hidden Costs Of Speeding TicketsA 25-mph speed limit sign in front of green trees - Royce Ngiam/Getty ImagesWhat the ticket amounts don't reflect is what they do to your insurance premiums. AAA calculated numbers from Insurance.com, finding that a ticket of up to 29 mph over the limit can increase your rates anywhere from 26% to 34%. Hit 30 mph over, and a ticket can raise your rates by 43%. Sure, with mitigating circumstances and differences between insurers, vehicle types, driver age, location, and other factors, there will be variances in your ultimate cost ramification. But it's not like your premiums are going to stay flat or go down after getting a ticket. Plus, that ticket will be on your record anywhere from three to five years. Thankfully, all you have to do to get fewer tickets in the future is buy a domestic car, as the top 10 most ticketed cars are all foreign brands. Admittedly, "speeding" and "speed limits" aren't the same thing. Drive the speed limit on bald tires in the rain and see how terrifying it is. Drive the speed limit in a C8 Corvette ZR1 on a deserted straight and see how boring it is. CNBC quoted Jay Beeber, executive director at Safer Streets L.A., as saying, "People drive the way the road is built, that's what happens. And doing anything else in terms of speed limits is just simply wasting your time." Regarding speed's impact on fatalities, the NHTSA says, "In 2023, speeding killed 11,775 people. The European Transportation Safety Council reports "25% more deaths on sections of the [German] Autobahn without speed limits compared to those with a limit." There's no doubt high-speed impacts are deadly, as seen when "Mythbusters" crashed a car at 50 mph (crushed engine bay) and 100 mph (transformed into cube). Drive safe, everyone! Want more like this?
