  2. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) on Wednesday signaled he was open to getting the FBI involved in the redistricting battle after initially pushing back on arguments for the law enforcement agency to intervene. “I’m in full support of using every possible method to secure a quorum and hold lawless Democrat legislators accountable for abandoning Texans, including involving federal authorities and the FBI,” Paxton said in a statement to The Hill. His comments come after an appearance he made on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast Tuesday, in which he criticized Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) call to have the FBI help bring back Texas Democrats who had left the state to break quorum, thereby stalling GOP efforts to advance newly drawn congressional maps. “Let me first say, this is a state issue,” Paxton said, when asked by Bannon about the state of play in Texas and calls for the FBI to get involved. “I don’t know what the FBI would have to do with this, nothing. This is a purely state issue, so we are focused on alternatives that we can implement at the state level,” Paxton continued. Some experts that spoke with The Hill expressed skepticism that the FBI had the jurisdiction to compel Democrats to return back to Texas. “I don’t see why the FBI would be involved in this at all. I mean this is Texas politics and the FBI has no business trying to enforce Texas state law,” explained Richard Painter, who served as associate counsel to the president in the White House Counsel’s office during former President George W. Bush’s second term. Painter, now a law professor at the University of Minnesota, suggested the only federal law being violated was gerrymandering – something he noted that the U.S. Supreme Court has been reluctant to address. Paxton noted that one of those options would be to arrest the lawmakers. He noted that if lawmakers don’t return when the Legislature meets on Friday, “then we are going to file motions to try to remove some of these legislators from office.” Bannon asked Paxton if arresting the lawmakers meant having Texas Rangers travel to Illinois to arrest the Texas Democrats who fled or if the rangers needed to be within the state to arrest lawmakers. “So Steve, I can tell you in a couple days exactly what that means,” Paxton said. “I can’t tell you right now. It’s part of what’s going on.” Paxton’s apparent reversal on the issue comes as he mounts an increasingly tense primary challenge against Cornyn in next year’s Senate race. Cornyn, who has trailed Paxton in recent polls, wrote a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel on Tuesday urging the FBI to try to help Republicans bring back Democrats who fled the state earlier this week. “The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime,” Cornyn wrote. “Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses.” President Trump said later Tuesday the FBI “may have to” get involved. “No, I know they want them back, not only the attorney general, the governor wants them back,” the president said. “If you look, I mean, the governor of Texas is demanding they come back. So, a lot of people are demanding they come back.” Paxton announced Tuesday he would seek judicial orders “declaring that runaway Democrats who fail to appear by the Speaker’s deadline have vacated their office.” “The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don’t show up to work, you get fired,” Paxton said. But Abbott has already started the process of removing lawmakers, filing an emergency petition Tuesday to the Texas Supreme Court in an effort to oust Texas House Democratic Caucus Leader Gene Eu from his seat. Paxton has been running to Cornyn’s right in the race. The primary is the latest in a nasty and long-simmering battle between the two men. Cornyn campaign senior adviser Matt Mackowiak criticized Paxton’s initial comments on Bannon’s podcast, saying in a statement he was “undermining President Trump and Sen. Cornyn’s effort to enlist the FBI to give Texas law enforcement additional tools to locate and return these AWOL Democratic House members.” “Memo to Ken Paxton: The adults who are in Texas and on the job will handle it from here. Go back to the hotel pool,” he added. Paxton hit back at Mackowiak, calling Cornyn and his campaign “transparently desperate.” “While I’m focused on doing everything in my power to actually solve the problem, John Cornyn and his team are obsessively making bizarre posts about me on X,” Paxton said. “It’s so transparently desperate that you almost have to feel bad for him.” Updated: 5:23 p.m. ET Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 3. Two suspects involved in the shooting of an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in New York City last month have been formally indicted on additional charges, officials announced Wednesday. At a press conference, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and New York City Mayor Eric Adams outlined the new state-level charges filed against Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez and Christhian Aybar-Berroa. New Charges Announced Mora, believed to be the gunman, is now charged with one count each of attempted murder in the first and second degrees. Both men face additional charges, including assault, attempted robbery, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. They are expected to be arraigned later this month. DA Bragg praised the officer for his bravery and quick response despite being off duty. Two Illegal Immigrants Charged In Nyc Shooting Of Off-duty Cbp Officer Read On The Fox News App "This officer showed true bravery and quick action, even while off-duty," Bragg said. "We will not tolerate violence against law enforcement or innocent New Yorkers." Bragg described the shooting as part of a "violent robbery spree" planned in advance via text messages, noting that the suspects had allegedly stolen a woman’s phone earlier that same night. "These individuals posed a serious threat and showed no concern for the safety of others in our city," said Mayor Adams. "Their capture is a direct result of collaboration between federal authorities, the NYPD, and the District Attorney’s office." The Shooting Incident According to police, the off-duty CBP officer was sitting on the rocks near the Little Red Lighthouse at Fort Washington Park, under the George Washington Bridge, shortly before midnight on July 19, when the suspects approached on a moped. "One of the men got off the scooter, displayed a firearm, and confronted the officer and his friend who were simply enjoying a summer evening," Adams said. Second Suspect Arrested In Cbp Officer Shooting Has Lengthy Criminal Past, Dhs Says Officials announced that the suspects, who are illegal immigrants, have been indicted for the attempted murder of an off-duty CBP officer in NYC in July. The officer was shot in the face and forearm, but returned fire, striking one of the suspects. Despite serious injuries, the officer survived and is expected to make a full recovery. Federal Charges & Immigration Status The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) previously confirmed that both suspects were illegal immigrants and had prior criminal records. They are also linked to ongoing investigations, according to the NYPD. Ricky Patel, special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in New York, said the attack amounted to a threat against the broader law enforcement community. "When these individuals targeted one of our own—knowingly or not—they targeted all of us," Patel said. "We are committed to pursuing justice alongside our law enforcement partners." Noem Blames 'Sanctuary' Policies For Migrant Accused Of Shooting Off-duty Cbp Officer "Miguel Mora and Cristhian Aybar juggled with fate, and lost, when they set out on their alleged robbery spree last month," Patel added. "These suspects showed no regard for human life or the rule of law. Their choices changed not only their lives, but the life of a federal officer who was simply enjoying a summer night." Broader Investigations Multiple sources within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told Fox News that the men involved in the shooting and attempted robbery are believed to be the same men caught on video in an armed robbery of a business in Leominster, Massachusetts, in February. Sources said in that incident — during which a store owner reportedly was bound with duct tape and held at gunpoint — two firearms were stolen. Political Reactions Following the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former Border Patrol official Tom Homan visited the injured officer in the hospital. Both emphasized the need for stricter immigration enforcement and criticized sanctuary policies. "Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals. President Trump is not going to tolerate it," Homan said. President Donald Trump also addressed the incident on social media, writing that "an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden." "The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage," Trump wrote. Adams, when previously asked about Noem’s remarks, distanced himself from federal immigration policy saying, "I have nothing to do with the rules that are put in place. I just carry out the rules." Collaboration Praised Adams concluded by commending the swift coordination between law enforcement agencies. "Thanks to the courageous actions of the wounded officer and our partners across agencies, two violent criminals are now off the streets," he said. Fox News' Greg Norman contributed to this report. 6. Craving french fries? Dunking your spuds in a deep fryer might be a recipe for elevating your risk of Type 2 diabetes. According to a study published Wednesday in the journal BMJ, swapping out your weekly dose of frites for boiled, baked or mashed potatoes could lower your risk of this chronic condition. The authors examined the diets of more than 205,000 adults in the U.S. who responded to questionnaires about what they ate over nearly four decades. Among those who consumed potatoes, the authors looked at which people developed Type 2 diabetes, a disease that leads to persistently high blood sugar levels. Eating three weekly servings of french fries, they found, was associated with a 20% increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. But consuming the same amount of boiled, baked or mashed potatoes did not appear to be linked to the disease. The vast majority of the 1 in 10 people with diabetes in the U.S. have Type 2. The condition can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes or kidney damage. The findings underscore that the way foods are prepared is key to their overall health risks or benefits, said Seyed Mohammad Mousavi, the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “Not all potatoes are created equal,” he said. “Even a small amount of french fries, less than one serving in the week, is associated with a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes.” Unlike boiled or baked potatoes, french fries are deep-fried in oils that usually contain trans or saturated fats. The way the body metabolizes those fats can contribute to insulin resistance — when cells don’t respond properly to insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. Regular consumption of fried foods can also lead to obesity and inflammation, both of which raise the risk of Type 2 diabetes. “When you fry the potatoes, the energy content — calories — increases because of the fat they absorb. If you eat many servings of french fries, it predisposes [people] to weight gain,” said Candida Rebello, the director of the nutrition and chronic disease program at Louisiana State University, who wasn’t involved in the study. The study relied on data collected between 1984 and 2021, when several different frying methods were popular. Most fast-food chains today prepare fries using vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, soybean or peanut oil. But during the 1980s, beef tallow was common. And in the early 1990s, restaurants shifted to partially hydrogenated oils. (The oils were a major source of trans fat in the U.S. diet and were largely phased out of the food industry by 2018.) Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said the seed oils used today are “poisoning” Americans and contributing to high levels of obesity in children. He has advocated for restaurants to switch back to beef tallow, a recommendation that isn’t backed by scientific research. “Beef tallow is high in saturated fats and other harmful fats. We definitely don’t recommend that,” Mousavi said. One limitation of Mousavi’s study is that it did not account for people adding unhealthy ingredients to their boiled, baked or mashed potatoes. “What do people add to baked potatoes? Butter, bacon, cheese, sour cream,” said Shannon Galyean, an assistant professor of nutritional sciences at Texas Tech University, who wasn’t part of the research. “Then we also don’t know, did they eat it with the skins?” Galyean said potato skins contain nutrients such as fiber, which helps with blood sugar control. And potatoes, when they aren’t deep-fried or slathered in butter, can be a useful source of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure. “Definitely, potatoes can be considered a healthy food when you don’t fry it, or when you don’t add lots of fat to it,” Galyean said. Mousavi said baking french fries at home with a healthier oil, such as olive or avocado oil, could help lower one’s diabetes risk compared to eating them from fast-food restaurants. Swapping out potatoes with whole grains, such as farro or whole-grain bread or pasta, could make an even bigger difference. These foods have a lower glycemic index, meaning they’re less likely to spike blood sugar levels. His study found that whole grains, when compared to all types of potatoes, were less likely to elevate one’s diabetes risk. White rice, on the other hand, had a stronger association with Type 2 diabetes than either of these foods. Megan Mulcahy, the director of communications at Potatoes USA, a marketing and research organization that supports potato consumption, said fries can “absolutely be part of a healthy eating pattern when enjoyed in moderation.” Galyean said it’s important to consider a person’s overall diet, which has a greater impact on their health than any individual food. Nutritionists generally recommend a colorful plate with a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy proteins such as fish, beans or nuts. “People don’t eat just one thing, they eat meals,” Galyean said. 7. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isci.2025.113202。【渡辺諒】 View the full article

  19. Although mRNA vaccines saved millions of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. incorrectly argued they are ineffective to justify the Department of Health and Human Service's recent decision to cancel $500 million in government-funded research projects to develop new vaccines using the technology. The longtime vaccine critic said in an X video posted Tuesday evening that mRNA vaccines do not adequately prevent upper respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and the flu, advocating instead for the development vaccines that use other processes. COVID-19 is the only virus for which real-world data on mRNA vaccine effectiveness is currently available, as mRNA vaccines for other diseases, including the flu, are still under development. The two scientists whose discoveries enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 won a Nobel Prize in 2023 for their work. Kennedy's claim ignores how mRNA vaccines work, according to experts. They prevent against severe infection and death, but cannot completely prevent an infection from occurring in the first place. Plus, years of research supports the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines that use mRNA technology. Here's a closer look at the facts. KENNEDY: “As the pandemic showed us, mRNA vaccines don't perform well against viruses that infect the upper respiratory tract.” THE FACTS: His claim is contradicted by scientific evidence. Countless studies show that vaccinated individuals fare far better against COVID-19 infections than those who are unvaccinated, while others have estimated that COVID-19 vaccines prevented millions of deaths during the global pandemic. The mRNA vaccines do not prevent respiratory diseases entirely, experts say. Rather, they can prevent more serious illness that leads to complications and death. For example, an mRNA vaccine against COVID-19 may prevent an infection in the upper respiratory tract that feels like a bad cold from spreading to the lower respiratory tract, where it could affect one's ability to breathe. “A vaccine cannot block a respiratory infection,” said Dr. Jake Scott, an infectious diseases physician and clinical associate professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. “That's never been the standard for a respiratory virus vaccine. And it's never been the expectation, and it's never been that realistic.” He called Kennedy's claim “misguided.” Jeff Coller, a professor of RNA biology and therapeutics at Johns Hopkins University, had a similar outlook. “Vaccinations don't have to be neutralizing, meaning that you're not going to get COVID,” he said. “But the important part of a vaccination is that they reduce hospitalization and death. And a reduction in hospitalization and death is proof of an effective vaccine.” Vaccines have traditionally required growing viruses or pieces of viruses called proteins and then purifying them. Then a small dose of the vaccine is injected to train the body how to recognize when a real infection hits so it’s ready to fight back. But this method takes a long time. The mRNA technology speeds up the process and allows existing vaccines to be updated more quickly. The “m” in mRNA stands for messenger because the vaccine carries instructions for our bodies to make proteins. Scientists figured out how to harness that natural process for vaccines by making mRNA in a lab. They take a snippet of the genetic code that carries instructions for making the protein they want the vaccine to target. Injecting that snippet instructs the body to become its own mini-vaccine factory, making enough copies of the protein for the immune system to recognize and react. Scott explained that mRNA vaccines are not a “magic force field” that the immune system can use to block an infection, as it can't detect whether a virus is nearby. It can only respond to a virus that has already entered the body. In the case of COVID-19, this means that the virus could cause an upper respiratory tract infection — a cold, essentially — but would be significantly less likely to cause more severe consequences elsewhere. Myriad studies on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines have been published since they first became available in late 2020. Although protection does wane over time, they provide the strongest barrier against severe infection and death. For example, a 2024 study by the World Health Organization found COVID-19 vaccines reduced deaths in the WHO’s European region by at least 57%, saving more than 1.4 million lives since their introduction in December 2020. A 2022 study published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases found that nearly 20 million lives were saved by COVID-19 vaccines during their first year. Researchers used data from 185 countries to estimate that vaccines prevented 4.2 million COVID-19 deaths in India, 1.9 million in the United States, 1 million in Brazil, 631,000 in France and 507,000 in the United Kingdom. The main finding — that 19.8 million COVID-19 deaths were prevented — is based on estimates of how many more deaths than usual occurred during the time period. Using only reported COVID-19 deaths, the same model yielded 14.4 million deaths averted by vaccines. Another 2022 study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, reported that two mRNA vaccines were more than 90% effective against COVID-19. Operation Warp Speed, the federal effort to facilitate the development and distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine, began under the first Trump administration. “What I don't understand is why is President Trump is allowing RFK Jr. to undermine his legacy that led to a medical intervention that literally saved millions of lives?” Coller said. “Why is Trump allowing RFK to undermine U.S. leadership in biomedical research and drug development?” ___ Find AP Fact Checks here: https://apnews.com/APFactCheck. 20. The University of California, Los Angeles, announced Wednesday the Trump administration has frozen $584 million in research funds after the federal government launched an investigation into antisemitism at the institution earlier this year. “Currently, a total of approximately $584 million in extramural award funding is suspended and at risk,” said Julio Frenk, chancellor of the university, in a letter that went out to the community. “If these funds remain suspended, it will be devastating for UCLA and for Americans across the nation.” James Milliken, president of the University of California system, said the cuts “would be a death knell” to the work of the institution, with the funding pause mostly targeting research areas that receive funding from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Energy. “These cuts do nothing to address antisemitism,” Milliken said. “Moreover, the extensive work that UCLA and the entire University of California have taken to combat antisemitism has apparently been ignored.” The institution’s goal is to get the funding restored, working with the Trump administration toward a deal. “We are doing everything we can to protect the interests of faculty, students and staff — and to defend our values and principles,” Frenk said. “The UC Board of Regents and the UC Office of the President are providing counsel as we actively evaluate our best course of action.” The investigation from the Trump administration came after UCLA entered a $6 million settlement over antisemitism on campus and the university’s handling of pro-Palestinian protests. Another deal on the horizon is likely to make higher education nervous as Columbia University and Brown University made numerous concessions in their agreement with the Trump administration, such as big payouts and commitments to how their admissions and hiring will operate. The Trump administration is still in talks with Harvard University to strike a deal with more than $3 billion pulled from its institution. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 21. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched an investigation into a political organization led by former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke for helping Texas Democrats block newly proposed congressional maps. In a Wednesday afternoon press release, Paxton said the O’Rourke-led group, Powered by People, may have violated bribery, campaign finance and abuse of office laws, citing “public reports” that Powered by People was “bankrolling” the Texas House Democrats. The organization’s purported involvement in helping fund Democrats’ out-of-state travels was first reported by The Texas Tribune. POLITICO has not independently confirmed the report. "The guy impeached for bribery is going after the folks trying to stop the theft of five Congressional seats," O'Rourke said in response to Paxton's announcement. "Let’s stop these thugs before they steal our country.” Paxton — a Republican who is also primarying Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) — has vowed to seek the expulsion of Democratic state lawmakers who fled the state this weekend to prevent the legislature from hitting quorum, preventing Republicans from passing a gerrymandered congressional map that could give the party as many as five more House seats in the midterm elections. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott attempted to accelerate the process by filing an emergency petition against Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu with the state’s Supreme Court on Tuesday. But Paxton and Abbott face legal and procedural hurdles as they attempt to force Democrats back to the state for the special session called by Abbott last month. “Texas cannot be bought. I look forward to thoroughly reviewing all of the documents and communications obtained throughout this investigation,” Paxton said in the press release. “These jet-setting runaways have already lost public trust by abandoning our state, and Texans deserve to know if they received illegal bribes to do it.” Paxton also said he had issued a “Request to Examine,” requiring the organization to supply his office with documents and communications related to its alleged involvement in the quorum break. 22. President Trump said Wednesday there's a "good chance" he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy soon — as Mr. Trump presses Russia to end its three-year invasion of Ukraine. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday that Russia suggested a meeting between the U.S. president and Putin, and Mr. Trump is "open" to the idea of a meeting with both Russia and Ukraine's leaders. Asked hours later whether Putin and Zelenskyy had agreed to a summit, Mr. Trump told reporters, "there's a very good prospect that they will." He said it's not clear where the meeting would take place. Russia and Ukraine have not commented publicly on the possibility of a meeting. Mr. Trump's comments came just days before his Friday deadline for Russia to either strike a ceasefire deal with Ukraine or face sanctions. Putin met with Mr. Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Moscow earlier Wednesday. The U.S. president called the hourslong meeting "highly productive" and wrote that "great progress was made" in a Truth Social post — a change of tone after Mr. Trump expressed frustration with Russia for much of last month. Mr. Trump also held a call Wednesday with European leaders and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. A senior Trump administration official told CBS News earlier Wednesday the meeting between Witkoff and Putin "went well." "The Russians are eager to continue engaging with the United States," the official said. Asked about the Witkoff-Putin meeting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: "We'll have some other discussions throughout the day, and then hopefully there'll be some announcements here fairly soon. Maybe positive, maybe not. We'll see." Mr. Trump has pressed both Russia and Ukraine to reach a ceasefire, but he has oscillated between blaming Putin and Zelenskyy for a lack of progress. In recent weeks, Mr. Trump has grown irritated with Putin over Russia's continued attacks on Ukrainian cities. Last week, Mr. Trump demanded that Putin strike a ceasefire deal with Ukraine within 10 days, or Russia could face repercussions, including sanctions on Russia and countries that do business with it. That deadline runs out on Friday. "The secondary sanctions are still expected to be implemented on Friday," the senior Trump administration official told CBS News following the Putin-Witkoff meeting. Mr. Trump has already begun targeting some Russian trading partners, slapping an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods Wednesday because the South Asian country continues to buy oil from Russia. That brings the total tax on Indian imports to 50%. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev — the deputy chair of Russia's security council — responded to Mr. Trump's sanction threats last week by warning: "Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war." Mr. Trump called Medvedev's statement "highly provocative" and said he was ordering two submarines to be "positioned in the appropriate regions" in response. At other points, Mr. Trump has lashed out at Zelenskyy and accused him of prolonging Russia's invasion, which began in February 2022. He publicly argued with the Ukrainian leader in an Oval Office meeting, and in at least two cases, his administration has temporarily paused crucial U.S. military aid to Ukraine before restoring the shipments. 23. SEATTLE (AP) — The Trump administration on Wednesday canceled a major wind farm development in Idaho, a project approved late in former President Joe Biden's term that had drawn criticism for its proximity to a historic site where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. The Bureau of Land Management in December signed off on a scaled-down plan for the Lava Ridge Wind Project northeast of Twin Falls, with 241 wind turbines instead of 400. But the development had been on hold since the first day of President Donald Trump's second term, when he issued an executive order halting the permitting of wind power projects across the country and telling the Interior Department to review the Lava Ridge decision. “By reversing the Biden administration’s thoughtless approval of the Lava Ridge Wind Project, we are protecting tens of thousands of acres from harmful wind policy while shielding the interests of rural Idaho communities," Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in a statement. "This decisive action defends the American taxpayer, safeguards our land, and averts what would have been one of the largest, most irresponsible wind projects in the nation.” The project, five years in the works, faced opposition from local residents concerned about the height of the turbines — up to 660 feet (201 meters), or more than twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. It also drew concerns it would spoil views from the Minidoka National Historic Site, where thousands of Japanese Americans were imprisoned during World War II. Under the plan, the closest turbine to the historic site would have been 9 miles (14 kilometers) away. Robyn Achilles, executive director of the nonprofit Friends of Minidoka, said in a text message her organization was reviewing the announcement. “We must protect Minidoka from future development, so we continue to seek long term protections for the BLM land in Minidoka's cultural viewshed,” Achilles wrote. The Interior Department's statement rescinding Lava Ridge's approval did not mention Minidoka. A spokeswoman for the company that proposed the development, Magic Valley Energy, did not immediately return messages seeking comment. The Bureau of Land Management said when it approved the project that it could power up to 500,000 homes and that its decision reflected "a careful balance of clean energy development with the protection of natural, cultural, and socioeconomic resources on this historically significant landscape.” Onshore wind is one of the cheapest sources of electricity generation. New wind farms cost less to build and operate than new natural gas plants on average in most regions of the United States, even without tax credits. The Trump administration and congressional Republicans have targeted wind and solar projects as expensive and unreliable while taking steps to support the burning of fossil fuels, which is dangerously heating the planet. Renewable energies such as wind and solar provide an intermittent supply of electricity when it is windy or sunny. Increasingly, batteries are getting paired with solar and wind projects to allow renewables to replace fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal, while keeping a steady flow of power when sources such as wind and solar are not producing. The tax-and-spending legislation signed by Trump last month phases out tax credits and other subsidies for clean energy, and an executive order issued by Trump a few days later further restricts subsidies for what he calls “the Green New Scam.” Since then, Burgum has issued a series of memos targeting wind and solar power, including a July 17 memo that requires his personal approval of all solar and wind energy projects on federal lands and waters. The order authorizes Burgum to conduct “elevated review” of activities ranging from leases to rights of way, construction and operational plans, grants and biological opinions. The restrictions on clean-energy projects are aimed at “ending preferential treatment for unreliable, subsidy-dependent wind and solar energy,” the Interior Department said in a statement. Late last month, Burgum canceled plans to use millions of acres of federal waters for new offshore wind development. And earlier this week, he issued a new secretarial order requiring that Interior agencies evaluating new wind and solar consider “capacity density,” or how much area the projects cover. Commercial-scale solar and wind projects typically require a much greater amount of land and water than other energy sources such as oil and natural gas. “This isn’t oversight," said Jason Grumet, CEO of the American Clean Power Association, which represents the renewable industry. "It’s obstruction that will needlessly harm the fastest growing sources of electric power.” ___ Matthew Daly in Washington and Jennifer McDermott in Providence, Rhode Island, contributed. 24.
