  1. FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — For many young Kentuckians, summer break has come and gone. As a new school year starts, so do some new policies intended to improve the quality of the Commonwealth’s education. Some bills passed into law in 2024 are only now taking effect in the 2025-26 school year. Cursive writing is now required to be part of the curriculum in elementary schools under Senate Bill 167. This year’s high school freshmen and beyond will need to finish with a slightly higher score on Kentucky’s civics test to graduate, or some districts may now opt to offer a half-credit civics course thanks to House Bill 535. LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:Kentucky joins 2 lawsuits fighting funding freezes ‘Designer Xanax’ linked to 47 deaths in Kentucky, AG warns Boyle County football grieves legendary coach “In today’s world, where misinformation and political polarization are all too common, civic literacy is more important than ever,” Rep. Robert Duvall (R-Bowling Green) said on the House floor while carrying the bill in 2024. The beginning of the school day will look a little different under Senate Bill 19; it now requires a moment of silence or reflection. It also allows students to be transported to off-campus district-approved weekly moral instruction if desired and offered by a district. “I will tell you, when my kids get to leave and come back, it’s amazing the smiles that they have,” Rep. Timmy Truett (R-McKee) said while the bill was being debated this year, explaining how a similar program has worked so far in his district. Truett is also an elementary school principal. Phones are coming under strict scrutiny for both students and teachers. House Bill 208 now requires a policy banning them during instructional time. Senate Bill 181 also sets a new communications policy for teachers, which requires messages to be sent through a traceable platform and bans texting students unless a parent submits written consent. These new Kentucky laws take effect for 2025-26 school year “Any communications can be accessed by parents so they know what’s being discussed in those conversations,” Sen. Lindsey Tichenor (R-Smithfield) told FOX 56 in an interview earlier this summer. Also, kindergarten and first graders will now be screened at the end of the school year on their reading ability; House Bill 240 introduces the possibility of holding them back another year for improvement. 3. SPRINGFIELD — A former resident of Maine hobbled into a courtroom in Hampden Superior Court to plead guilty to a rape and kidnapping in Holland that happened 25 years ago. Struggling to use a cane while handcuffed, Jamie A. Dodge admitting to abducting and raping a woman during her Sunday walk around her neighborhood on July 23, 2000, just before 11:30 that morning. He was sentenced to 12 to 15 years in state prison. According to the victim’s account to law enforcement over the years, a white man grabbed her from behind, clamped a hand over her mouth and dragged her into the woods. Forcing the woman to her knees and tearing items of clothing, he raped the woman then told her to lie on the ground and count to 500 before she got up and left the wooded area. “You’re coming with me, woman,” Assistant Hampden District Attorney Elizabeth Dunphy Farris told a judge Wednesday afternoon, quoting Dodge to a judge. “Since I’m in a good mood today, I’ll let you go.” As the victim attempted to crawl away from him on her knees, Dodge threatened her. “I’ll hurt you worse than you have ever been hurt before,” he said. After Dunphy Farris recited the facts of the prosecution’s case, Superior Court Judge Tracy Duncan asked Dodge whether he agreed with the version and still wished to plead guilty. “Yes, ma’am,” he quietly repeated several times. The victim was not present during the proceeding, as appearing in court in a previous hearing to tell her story had shaken her so badly. Dodge’s conviction is significant not only as a conclusion to a decades-old case, but it was the first one in Hampden County to be solved using specific advances in DNA analysis Hampden District Attorney Hampden District Anthony D. Gulluni has employed in cold cases. Police were led to Dodge after his father, Edward Dodge, gave a voluntary DNA sample and compared to the victim’s DNA that had been preserved in the investigation. Although he told Duncan he was a married father of two adult sons, a woman identified as his girlfriend got peripherally ensnared in the case. Court records show Mary N. Haley, of Ware, who made very public scenes in the earliest proceeding after Dodge’s arrest, is incarcerated after being charged with two counts of witness intimidation. She was charged in Palmer District Court on May 28. The charges stem from alleged statements she made to Dodge on a recorded jail phone line. “Do you think I want to hear that you have to talk to your lawyer about how many years this (expletive) is going to give you”, “I’m literally ready to drive to Springfield bust into that district attorney’s office and drag her out of that (expletive) place and beat her in the (expletive) street,” a statement of facts by police read. quoting Haley. The police records do not identify the victims by name. “These people have ruined my life and will get even with every mother (expletive) one of them and I don’t care what happens I don’t give a (expletive) anymore; I don’t give a (expletive),” the police report reads. “At approximately minute 17:36 she expresses, ‘As far as the DA is concerned she is not going to worry about trying your case, she won’t be there to do it, another passage reads.” Haley, 57, remains held behind bars after a dangerous hearing earlier this year. The reason District Court Judge Michael E. Mulcahy gave to continue Haley’s incarceration, was: “Made outrageous threats against prosecutor and alleged victim in aggravated rape case,” the judge wrote. Read the original article on MassLive. 4. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After announcing that its Berkeley Riverfront location would be closing in late July, Bar K has now filed for bankruptcy. On July 29, Bar K closed three locations in Kansas City, St. Louis and Oklahoma City. Shortly after, on Aug. 4, a petition for Chapter 7 bankruptcy was filed for the KC and STL locations. Chapter 7 bankruptcy refers to liquidation as opposed to reorganization. Char Bar opening new location in downtown Olathe Also on July 29, the landlord of Bar K’s St. Louis location alleged that the property owed more than $200,000 in rent and demanded payment within 10 days. Bar K failed to do so before filing for bankruptcy. A similar situation happened in 2024, when the STL location was accused of owing nearly $300,000 in back rent. “We faced the same severe economic challenges as the rest of the hospitality industry, including inflationary costs and expenses, an extremely difficult labor market, and sharply reduced consumer spending,” the company said in a news release last month, regarding its closure. Bar K also shared that the Kansas City location in particular was affected by recent large-scale construction projects along the riverfront. Things to do in Kansas City this weekend: Aug.1-3 After opening in 2018, Bar K opened in Kansas City, with the STL location arriving in 2021 and the Oklahoma City location in 2023. In 2024, the bar was voted the number one dog bar in the United States by USA Today and earned the number nine spot in 2025. Bar K and its related entities include Stay! 5. Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy speaks at "Crime and Safety" press conference held by the Trump campaign in Howell. Aug. 20, 2024. Photo by Jon King. Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy, who’s also running for the Michigan Senate, held a political fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers last month and coordinated the event using taxpayer-funded resources to do it, according to emails obtained by Michigan Advance. The documents, obtained via the Freedom of Information Act, show that Murphy used his official Livingston County email address to organize a benefit event for Rogers held on July 29, of which Murphy was a host. The event sold tickets of $100 per person and $175 per couple, with higher tiers reaching up to $3,500 a person. Donations could be made online and interested benefactors could attend sending RSVP notices to Aaron Laatsch, deputy director of state development and fundraising with the Templar Baker Group, a political consulting and strategy group, according to an event flyer. Michigan law prohibits public officials from using their offices and taxpayer funded resources for outside political purposes, and the emails show that Murphy sent messages discussing what they would eat at the event and ticketing issues during the course of the weekday. In an interview with the Advance, Murphy was unfazed and said he used very little government time on coordinating the event. He also was not concerned if someone eventually filed a complaint about it. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX “Those were basically one-liners, three or five emails, that literally took 30 seconds or less each,” Murphy said. “They were not long diatribes. There was no email to anyone promoting the event. It was just a coordination thing.” Murphy is currently seeking higher office in the state Senate as a declared candidate to fill the open 22nd District seat currently held by state Sen. Lana Theis (R-Brighton), who is term limited. This is not the first time that Murphy has faced scrutiny for blurring the lines between his station as the county’s sheriff and party politics: Murphy is still facing a complaint for helping to organize an event for President Donald Trump last year in a county-owned sheriff’s department garage. The emails obtained by the Advance were loosely redacted, blocking out the surnames and addresses of the email recipients. Murphy’s name remained on the emails, however, which show he helped coordinate aspects of the event using his government work email. On July 25, Murphy was sent an email containing a draft flyer for the event and was asked to give his approval and offer any edits. The sheriff replied: “Perfect. Send it.” On July 14, Murphy also coordinated with another person regarding what they would eat that evening, saying they should “nix the shrimp cocktail and the chicken satay.” In an email sent on July 8 to one of the other hosts of the Rogers event, Murphy discussed an issue with ticketing and record keeping for campaign finance purposes. Murphy wrote that they were not going to have tickets printed, noting that for campaign finance reporting purposes, tickets “are a pain.” Again, these emails were sent using Murphy’s Livingston County email address. “Then we have to track people down,” Murphy wrote in the email regarding tickets. “ I would suggest forwarding this to anyone interested and having them fill out the form and bring a check, or pay online, because this will capture all the information needed for reporting.” It was also in that email exchange where Murphy noted that he was going to reach out to other organizers about the night’s cuisine. R000719-072925_Redacted (1) Other emails dated in April show Murphy coordinating with others on when the event would be held. In all, the communications show a continued pattern of Murphy using his government email account to help organize external campaign events. The Trump event in August 2024 was the subject of numerous complaints with the Michigan Department of State, and it was alleged that Murphy coordinated it while also using his government email account. Michigan law addresses public employees’ participation in political activities such as joining political parties and running for office. Public employees are defined to include both state civil servants and non-elected employees of political subdivisions. Public employees can participate in political activities so long as they don’t actively engage in those activities during work hours. Several of the emails obtained by the Advance show that the messages were sent by Murphy during the weekday during his business hours. It’s also a violation of Michigan law to use public email accounts for campaign purposes, which has been the subject of state complaints in the past. While it is not against the law for a public official to endorse another candidate, a public official cannot use public resources to promote or advertise the endorsement of himself or another candidate. In an interview, Neil Thanedar, executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, said that even though Murphy wasn’t organizing a fundraiser for himself, the use of his government email to do so for Rogers was a violation of the law. The emails also raised some concern about ticket sales loopholes, and whether Murphy and organizers were trying to get around reporting rules, although Murphy’s insistence of collecting donations online was the route they went. Per Murphy’s insistence, all donations to Rogers’ campaign and event ticket sales were collected via his campaign’s WinRed account, a Republican campaign fundraising platform, which requires name and address registration. Thanedar said there were two parts of that equation to consider in the context of campaign finance law – the value of the ticket and the value of the donation on top of that. “There could be some argument to be made that, even if you were selling tickets online, and they had some portion of the proceeds that were going to the campaign, they would still need to record that,” he said. “Whether money was taken online or in person shouldn’t affect the record keeping that has to be done for that money.” Thanedar said ticket registration was important, especially in the context of an issue like foreign nationals donating to American political candidates. “Foreign nationals are prohibited from making campaign contributions, so if you truly made a ticket or a donation anonymous, that could be a potential workaround for things like foreign donations,” he said. “That would be the reason why you’d want to have to register everyone’s name and then have the process of putting their name and address into the campaign finance system.” When asked about his history of using public resources like his email for political purposes and the previous complaints against him, Murphy said he was cleared from at least one of the complaints regarding the Trump event last year. Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy (right) looks on as former President Donald Trump speaks at “Crime and Safety” press conference in Howell. Aug. 20, 2024. Photo by Jon King.Michigan’s database of resolved complaints also shows that the department found that there was no reason to believe that a violation occurred in the act of hosting the event. No other complaint filed against Murphy regarding the Trump visit appeared to be resolved in the public database. Murphy told the Advance that he understood that his state Senate ambitions have put him under a finer microscope, but he still wasn’t bothered by the prospect of a new complaint. “I’m totally good with that,” he said. “That’s what happens when you run for public office. You’re under a microscope. And you know what, my man? If that’s the best you can do…” Still, the pattern was something the Michigan Democratic Party said voters should be aware of. “For some reason Republicans never think that the rule of law applies to them,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel Jr. said in a statement provided to the Advance. “Once again, Sheriff Murphy has used his position to illegally and unethically support a Republican candidate, first Donald Trump and now Mike Rogers. This behavior demonstrates how deep the corruption runs in this party – clearly, Law and Order is just a TV show to them. Either way, MDP intends on filing a complaint.” View the full article
  6. Rivian Reports $1.1B Q2 Loss But Holds 2025 Delivery Forecast originally appeared on Autoblog. Rivian’s Q2 earnings are out, and while the EV startup posted another sizable loss — $1.1 billion — the company is standing by its full-year delivery guidance of 40,000 to 46,000 vehicles. That’s despite continued cost pressures, weakening regulatory credit income, and delivery volumes that came in lighter than expected. Revenue for the quarter was $1.3 billion, up slightly year-over-year and just ahead of analyst estimates, but still well below what investors were hoping for. The company’s adjusted loss per share landed at $0.80, missing expectations by $0.04. GettyProduction Down, Losses UpRivian produced 5,979 vehicles and delivered 10,661 in Q2, both down significantly compared to last year. The company said the dip is tied to planned factory retooling ahead of the launch of its upcoming R2 SUV — a mid-size, sub-$50,000 model aimed squarely at volume growth from 2026 onward. That said, costs per vehicle remain steep. On average, Rivian spent $118,375 to build each EV last quarter, thanks to inflationary headwinds, rare earth material constraints, and reduced EV tax credit access. Regulatory credits, which once padded the balance sheet, are now expected to bring in just $160 million this year — nearly half the earlier forecast. Rivian’s full-year EBITDA loss guidance has now widened to $2.0–$2.25 billion, from its previous $1.7–$1.9 billion range. RivianWhat’s Next: R2, Repositioning, and RelevanceDespite its financial drag, Rivian is focusing heavily on its upcoming R2 platform, with pilot builds already underway and capital expenditures projected at $1.8–$1.9 billion for the year. Positioned to compete in a broader, more price-sensitive segment, the R2 is intended to do what the brand’s flagship R1T and R1S models have struggled with: reach beyond the enthusiast core and connect with everyday buyers. While updates to the 2025 R1T and R1S have refined the platform’s feel and responsiveness, the vehicles still carry high price tags — and aren’t resonating with all the right audiences. A recent S&P Global study found that Rivian continues to underperform with female buyers, a demographic that legacy brands like Ford and Toyota increasingly view as central to their EV strategy. Still, Rivian is doubling down on brand appeal. This summer, it brought back its most viral party trick: Tank Turn, the feature that lets the R1S or R1T rotate in place like an off-road hovercraft. First teased back in 2019, the quad-motor function never actually reached customers — but that’s set to change, as Rivian looks to reignite attention in its existing lineup ahead of the R2 rollout. Chicago Tribune/Getty ImagesTakeawayIt’s another quarter of deep red ink for Rivian, but the message from CEO RJ Scaringe is steady: losses are expected, scale is coming, and R2 is the hinge point. Whether that’s enough to calm Wall Street remains to be seen — but for now, the company isn’t blinking. 7. Read the full story on Backfire News Zero Armor: Army Taps GM For Humvee ReplacementThe United States Army has revealed it plans to replace the Humvee with an unarmored light truck based on civilian model. The Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) is made by GM Defense and is based on the Chevy Colorado ZR2. It was chosen by the military thanks to the Ukraine War and changes in the future of warfare. At one point the Oshkosh JLTV was supposed to replace the Humvee. But is an unarmored, open truck that won’t even protect soldiers from small arms fire a good idea? The Pentagon acknowledges it’s a risk, but it also believes the world is changing and what the ISV lacks in armoring it makes up for in speed and maneuverability. This comes from watching drones take out heavily armored vehicles in Ukraine, including the infamous “turtle tanks” used by Russia to protect against drone attacks. Drone operators were able to use the diminished visibility and maneuverability of those armored vehicles against them, hitting at critical points to kill or seriously maim soldiers inside. Image via GM DefenseAnother big advantage of the ISV is the fact most of its parts are shared with the Colorado ZR2, so they’re readily available. “You can repair it anywhere on Earth as long as you have access to commercial parts rather than a special military vehicle with special military parts,” Alex Miller, chief technical adviser to the US Army, told USA Today. While for that reason some are likening it to the original jeeps used in WWII, those were purpose-built for the military and weren’t modified civilian vehicles. However, the lightweight, maneuverable nature of the jeeps are something they have in common with the ISV. The plan is to arm soldiers riding in ISVs with drones and other robots which can scout ahead for ambushes or traps. That helps soldiers stay on the move rapidly, since drone operators supposedly like to hit stationary targets, says Miller. “The longer you sit and the slower you are, the easier it is to kill you.” But we’ve covered how Ukraine drone operators have targeted Russian soldiers on motorcycles, which are highly maneuverable and quick forms of transportation. Not everyone’s sold these ISVs will fare well in future combat. However, the UK already jumped onboard back in June and other NATO member nations will likely use them as well. Russia, China, and others are likely weighing what kind of threat these trucks will pose in future theaters. Images via GM Defense View the full article

14. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, along with 49 other state and territorial attorneys general, urged the U.S. Department of Justice to take action against illegal offshore online gambling. According to a press release from Andrew Bailey’s office, these unregulated gambling platforms, mainly operated by foreign companies, bypass U.S. law, taxes, and are a risk to state economies and the consumers themselves. “Illegal offshore gambling platforms are siphoning billions of dollars away from American communities, exploiting vulnerable consumers, and fueling transnational crime,” said Attorney General Bailey. Some students will be exempt from new student phone ban They’re calling on the DOJ to attempt to use its authority to seize assets and proceeds associated with these operations by blocking out domain names or dismantling other financial networks associated with the operations. The release also states that the operations are linked to more serious criminal activities, including money laundering and organized crime. The DOJ has previously used similar strategies to combat illegal activities, such as the 2011 “Black Friday” crackdown on counterfeit websites. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 16. Teamsters President Sean O'Brien revealed on Tuesday that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., stopped communicating with him after O'Brien spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention, saying the senator's attitude and level of access have changed. Speaking with The Free Press' Bari Weiss, the union boss said Sanders "doesn't talk to me anymore." O'Brien spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention but said he never heard back from the Democratic National Committee after requesting to speak. The Teamsters did not endorse Trump or Harris in 2024. Asked if he used to talk to Sanders often, O'Brien said he used to do rallies with him: "I think he looks at it as a betrayal of not endorsing the Democratic Party." Teamsters president Sean O'Brien said Sen. Bernie Sanders stopped speaking to him after O'Brien addressed the RNC.Democrats Lash Out At ‘Misinformed’ As Teamsters Union Makes Landmark Non-endorsement "He's never said that, but his whole attitude and access have completely changed towards us," he said. Read On The Fox News App O'Brien said his staff called Sanders and his team last week because they were working on the Faster Labor Standards Contract Act, which O'Brien said was a trimmed-down version of the PRO Act. "He's got a problem with it and his staff [were] not too nice to my staff. So it's like, we're only as good to people when we're carrying that water, but I guess that doesn't matter," he said. "I mean, look, I like the guy. I have respect for him. I saw him on Joe Rogan. I don't know. I mean, this is the problem with politics. People take things too personal. And when you don't go along to get along because you're actually listening to people you represent, and they don't talk to you anymore, you know, that's the problem. It's fine," O'Brien continued. Teamsters Boss Praises Trump Foreign Film Tariff, Condemns Hollywood's 'Un-american Addiction To Outsourcing' Sanders' team did not immediately return a request for comment. The Teamsters president also criticized former Vice President Kamala Harris during the interview, accusing her of pressuring the union for an endorsement. He described one off-putting encounter Teamsters leader Joan Corey allegedly had with the 2024 presidential candidate in a photo-op line. "So, Joan goes in the line and Joan says, 'I'm Joan Corey. I'm a vice president with the Teamsters Union,' and [Harris] pointed her finger at Joan and said, 'Teamsters better get on board,' and so Joan says, 'Excuse me?' 'Yeah, Teamsters better get on board. I don't know why you haven't endorsed me yet.' So she comes back, and she tells me this, and I'm like, 'The nerve!'" Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign rally, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, at the PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, N.C.Click Here For More Coverage Of Media And Culture O’Brien went on to claim that when Harris met with the union’s executive board, which had prepared a slate of 16 questions, she only answered four. "She really didn’t answer the questions, and then on the fourth question, my chief of staff slides me an index card and says, ‘This is the last question. She’s not answering anymore,’ because she wanted to pontificate and give her speech of why the country is the way it is, why we should endorse her," he said. Harris didn’t respond to a request for comment. Fox News' Alexander Hall contributed to this report. 17. JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A federal judge could soon decide whether to block Mississippi’s ban on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies before a temporary order expires. U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate issued the temporary restraining order on July 20, which expires on August 17. House Bill 1193 bans public schools and colleges from requiring or promoting DEI statements or programs. Judge considers extending block on Mississippi’s DEI law During closing arguments, Attorney Rob McDuff, with the Mississippi Center for Justice, asked Wingate to block the law statewide. McDuff is representing students, teachers and parents who said the law is confusing and dangerous. However, Attorney Lisa Reppeto, with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, argued Wingate should limit his ruling to those directly involved in the case. “It’s a crazy idea, and I think the judge is going to disagree with it. And I think he will rule in our favor and issue an order putting this law on hold and that he will do it for everybody and not just a few people,” McDuff said. Wingate expects to release his written opinion before the temporary restraining order expires. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. 18. A British holidaymaker has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to drown his daughter-in-law in a row over his will. Mark Gibbon, 62, from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, was on a family holiday at Solterra Resort in Davenport, near Disney World, Florida, when the pair began arguing about “the stipulations of his will”, US police said. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery. Mr Gibbon allegedly pushed the 33-year-old “under the water and held her down multiple times”, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit. His nine-year-old granddaughter “jumped into the pool” to try and save her mother but Mr Gibbon allegedly pushed her away. “She advised that she could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown,” officials wrote. “[The victim] advised that she had to fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water, but he kept pushing her back under.” The alleged attempted drowning took place at Solterra Resort in Davenport, Florida - Polk County Sheriff's OfficeThe victim called for neighbours and shouted for them to call the police. He is said to have only stopped when neighbours said they were calling the authorities. Mr Gibbon is a lighting technician, who runs his own firm called MRG Lighting. He has worked on music videos for Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith, according to his website, as well as on film and TV sets. US police said Mr Gibbon allegedly admitted to pushing his daughter-in-law underwater, but said he did not intend to drown her. The victim reportedly suffered a couple of scratches. He claimed they had been drinking before they began discussing the will. He alleged his daughter-in-law had slapped him, which sparked the fallout. The suspect was taken into custody on Aug 3 at 5.19pm. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said: “It’s great that Polk County draws visitors from all across the world, but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same. “Because Mr Gibbon couldn’t control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.” Mr Gibbon is being held at Polk County Jail without bond. His next court date is scheduled for Sept 9. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. 22. … View the full article
View the full article
View the full article
