Teddy Bridgewater retired from the NFL in 2023 after 10 seasons, in part to focus on his two sons. In his eyes, he inherited many more when he took over as the head coach of his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, in his native South Florida. "I'm protective, and I'm a father first before anything," a now-32-year-old Bridgewater told reporters Wednesday during his first media appearance since signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this week. Bridgewater, who initially unretired from the NFL to rejoin the Detroit Lions late last season, is spending the 2025 season in the Bucs' quarterback room as a veteran voice and experienced backup. "Not enough blessings in tough neighborhood, and sometimes things can happen when kids are walking home and different things like that," Bridgewater said. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he may take control of the police force in Washington and dispatch National Guard troops to the city after a young staff member of his administration was assaulted over the weekend. Trump told reporters that the city is unsafe, though violent crime last year fell 35 percent from 2023 and is at a 30-year-low, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia reported in January. The president said his administration was on a mission to "make it the best run place in the country" and said White House lawyers were studying the possibility of ending home rule, which enables district residents to elect their local officials "We want to have a great, safe capital," he told reporters. "And we're gonna have it. And that includes cleanliness and it includes other things." Mayor Muriel Bowser's office declined a request for comment from POLITICO. Trump's comments came in response to questions about the assault of Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old man known as "big balls" who played a prominent role in the administration's efforts to slash government under the leadership of Elon Musk. Coristine, who now works for the Social Security Administration though Musk has left the government and DOGE has been scaled back, told police he was attacked by a group of juveniles as part of an apparent attempted carjacking about 3 a.m Sunday in Northwest D.C. トラック（左）と高速バスが正面衝突し14人が死傷した徳島自動車道の事故現場。ワイヤロープを設置できない橋りょう部分だったことが分かる＝徳島県阿波市で2025年7月14日午後3時11分、本社ヘリから 写真一覧 　8月となり、レジャーや帰省など、高速道路を使って遠出を計画している人も多いだろう。高速道路と言えば、徳島自動車道や松山自動車道で7月中旬に正面衝突による死亡事故が連続した記憶も新しい。タイヤのバーストがきっかけとの疑いもある徳島自動車道での事故現場は対面通行区間で、上下車線間に樹脂製の「ラバーポール」があったものの、対向車線への車両飛び出しを防げなかった。同じ構造の高速道路は地方を中心に各地にあり注意が必要だ。 暫定供用区間、四国に160キロ NEXCO四国支社管内の暫定対面通行区間 写真一覧 　四国4県には、西日本高速道路（NEXCO西日本）運営の高速道路が六つあり、総延長は約480キロに及ぶ。このうち、全線が4車線化されているのは、高松自動車道（鳴門インターチェンジ―川之江ジャンクション）だけで、徳島自動車道を含む5道路には、暫定的な対面通行区間がある。 Advertisement 　「暫定的」なのは、いずれは上下各2車線とする計画で、将来上り線か下り線となる2車線を、上下各1車線として運用しているからだ。NEXCO西日本によると、こういった暫定供用区間が、四国内には計160キロ近くあるという。 ワイヤロープで 暫定対面通行区間で上下線間に設置される構造物 写真一覧 　4車線区間では、上下車線の間に中央分離帯やガードレール、コンクリート壁など、飛び出し防止効果の高い構造物が設けられる。一方、対面通行区間の上下車線間にあるのは、ラバーポール（車線分離標）やワイヤロープが多い。 　ラバーポールなどのメーカーで作る「日本視線誘導標協会」のサイトでは、ラバーポールを「高速道路、一般道路での車を安全に誘導するために……」などと紹介する。ドライバーに道路の位置を知らせて、安全運転してもらうのが主な目的で、高速走行車の対向車線飛び出しを防止する機能はない。 　一方、ワイヤロープ設置は2017年に始まり、国土交通省の公開資料によると、23年3月までに全国の設置区間で3716件の接触事故が発生したが、対向車線への飛び出しは10件（0・27％）にとどまり、死亡事故はゼロ。対向車線への飛び出し減少や死亡事故防止に高い効果がある。NEXCO西日本も22年までに四国内の計56キロにワイヤロープを設置した。対面通行区間の全てが危険なわけではないのだ。 設置困難区間も 　だが、トラックと高速バスが正面衝突して、乗員乗客ら14人が死傷した徳島自動車道の事故現場（徳島県阿波市）に設置されていたのは、ワイヤロープでなく、ラバーポールだった。なぜ、ワイヤロープが設置されていなかったのか。 　実は事故現場が橋りょう部だったためだ。ワイヤロープには大型車が接触しても対向車線への飛び出しを抑える機能があるが、徳島県高規格道路課によると、ワイヤの端を路面に固定する際、路面下3メートル近くまで部品を設置する必要がある。ところが、橋りょう部では、舗装の下にある基礎部分の「床版（しょうばん）」を傷める恐れがある。このため、部品を橋りょう外に設置できる比較的短い橋りょうを除き、ワイヤロープは設置できないという。比較的浅い舗装面地下に排水溝などの構造物があるトンネルも同様だ。 　四国では、対面通行区間計約157キロのうち、ワイヤロープ設置区間を除いた計約100キロ（64％）が、長いトンネルや橋りょう部で、主にラバーポールで上下車線を区切っている。徳島自動車道は47キロと四国全体の半分近くを占める。長いトンネルや橋りょうの割合が高いためだ。 ブロックやパイプなどに期待 　「主に」としたのは、ラバーポールではない対策が施された区間もあるからだ。それは、高知自動車道・針木トンネル（高知市）などで、24年度に設置されたセンターブロックだ。上下車線間に、鉄筋コンクリート製の壁部材を並べて固定する仕組みだ。2本の丸形鋼管からなる鋼製構造物を固定する「センターパイプ」とともに、全国各地の対面通行区間に試行設置されている。ともに、飛び出し抑止効果があり、ドライバーに与える安心感や走行速度などをワイヤロープと比べる検証が進められている。 健康管理、休憩、制限速度…… 7月に徳島自動車道であった衝突事故で焼けただれた高速バス。右後方は正面衝突したトラック＝徳島市で2025年8月4日午後4時1分、植松晃一撮影 写真一覧 　だが、こういった道路改良には時間がかかる。では、ドライバーが今日から取れる対策は何か。徳島県警高速隊の藤田和夫指導官は、タイヤの状態を含む車体の運行前点検に加え、健康管理と十分な休憩、制限速度の順守などを呼び掛ける。 　健康管理や休憩を挙げるのは、居眠りなどによる飛び出しもあるからだ。藤田指導官は「暑い時期でもあり、しっかり前方を見て、ハンドルを握り続けるには、時々休憩を取ることも大切」と話す。 　さらに、制限速度の順守も重要だ。対面通行区間の制限速度は時速70キロで、対向車を含め双方が時速70キロで走っていても、飛び出して正面衝突すると、時速140キロの衝撃となる。速度が2倍になると、運動エネルギーは2乗に比例するため、時速140キロでは時速70キロの際と比べ、衝突時の衝撃は4倍になる。当然、70キロを超えていれば、それ以上の衝撃となり、重大事故につながる。事故時の衝撃を少しでも軽減させる点からも、制限速度順守はわが身を守る第1歩となる。【植松晃一】 View the full article

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – With the chile season officially starting, New Mexican’s may have already noticed that familiar aroma in the air. According to the New Mexico Chile Association, the crop is looking good, but this year also had its challenges. That telltale smell lets New Mexicans know the chile season has officially begun. “These rains have helped us quite a bit kind of accelerate it. We’re probably about a week ahead of where we were at last year,” said Edward Ogaz, who farms chile in southern New Mexico. Although the association said the state’s chile crop looks good, farmers ran into some extra challenges this year. Those include labor issues, a hit-or-miss monsoon season, and irrigation uncertainties. “Water’s an everyday problem because we’ve got small amounts coming down from Colorado in the Rio Grande,” said Ogaz. That’s why farmers like Jimmy Wagner of Big Jim Farms in Albuquerque’s North Valley are turning to drip systems, especially as the Rio Grande ran dry this summer with little to no water for irrigation. The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District told KRQE in July that it’s due to below-average snowpack and the compact promising water to Texas. “They turned off the water like a month ago, so it was like, what are we going to do? So, we have a drip system that waters it by itself,” said Wagner. Wagner said his farm is starting to harvest, and the chile is abundant and flavorful. “When it’s dry and hot like this, you get a lot of flavor and it’s hotter,” added Wagner. The New Mexico Chile Association said they don’t expect a shortage of chile this year. “I think we’re probably going to have an average year as far as volumes concerned, maybe a little bit above average. I think our quality is good all the way through,” said Ogaz. However, with this year’s challenges and rising supply costs, they expect chile could be more expensive. The association’s message to consumers is that New Mexico-grown chile is worth it. “Once we let chile creep in from Mexico, the price starts to cheapen. That’s why we’re so big in our chile association on this certified New Mexico chile because we have to protect what is ours,” said Ogaz. Former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke was pressed during a CNN interview on Wednesday about why he was helping cover costs for Democrats fleeing Texas to avoid a redistricting vote, rather than spending that money to help vulnerable Texans directly. O'Rourke's group, Powered by People (PBP), has played a major role in supporting the roughly 50 Democrats who left for New York and Illinois. The group is paying for airfare, lodging, and assisting with the $500-per-day fines the lawmakers face for skipping the legislative session, according to the Texas Tribune. The walkout by Texas Democrats has stalled the Republican-controlled state legislature from voting on new GOP-crafted congressional maps that would create five more right-leaning congressional districts ahead of the 2026 elections. During the Wednesday interview, CNN anchor Pamela Brown pointed out that O’Rourke’s group spent more than half a million dollars in 2021 to help Democrats flee the state to break quorum during a similar protest over a voting bill that ultimately passed. Charges against a Georgia man accused of trying to kidnap a toddler at an Atlanta-area Walmart were dismissed Wednesday after prosecutors said they were “satisfied that the ends of justice have been met.” A motion filed earlier said prosecutors were moving to drop the charges after meeting with the child's mother and reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding the case. The accused, Mahendra Patel, had disputed the charges and said he had only been trying to help the mother during the March 18 incident, which sparked allegations of racial bias and drew nearly 100,000 signatures in an online petition calling for justice. (NBC News)Speaking outside the courtroom Wednesday, Patel told NBC affiliate WXIA-TV of Atlanta that he was “relieved” at the outcome. “This thing was hanging on my head for a long time,” he told the station. “Our family went through a lot of hell.” Patel, 57, was indicted in April on charges of criminal attempt to commit kidnapping, simple assault and simple battery after authorities accused him of trying to pull the 2-year-old from his mother during the encounter in Acworth. Patel was jailed for six weeks on the charges. He was released on $10,000 bond in May. An arrest warrant said that the parent, Caroline Miller, was able to get her son back after “wrestling” him away from Patel. She told a local news outlet that they were “tug of warring” over the toddler. But security video released by Patel’s lawyer appeared to contradict that account. The video showed him speaking to Miller while she was in a mobility scooter. At one point, the child — who was sitting in his mother’s lap — appeared to slip. Patel told authorities that he had been asking Miller where he could find Tylenol when he tried to help stabilize the child. “Mr. Patel offered to hold the baby while she got up to show him where the Tylenol was,” his lawyer said at a hearing earlier this year. Russia has launched a new bid to exert control over the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson by threatening key access roads with its drones and trying to split it in two by striking a vital bridge. On Sunday, a wave of airstrikes damaged a key bridge between Kherson’s island, Korabel, and the main city, sparking a widespread effort to evacuate the estimated 1,800 Ukrainian civilians who still live there. Russian forces appear not to have targeted the evacuation effort over the past three days, according to locals and rescuers, a rare moment of respite from the daily barbaric drone strikes on civilians across the city of recent months. Later Wednesday, videos posted online showed significant Russian strikes had resumed near the bridge and on the island, where some Ukrainain military are also thought to be based. Russian military bloggers have also warned Kherson residents the main access road to the city, from the north, would now be targeted by longer-range drones. It was unclear how impactful the threats had been Wednesday when CNN witnessed traveling along the road significant freight and civilian traffic, including a large group of cyclists, at times protected by netting hung above the asphalt to block drones. The capture of Kherson city and region – seized in the opening days of the war and then freed by a swift Ukrainian counter-offensive in November 2022 – remains one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main goals for the conflict, and the renewed pressure to separate Korabel from the rest of the city has raised concerns Russian forces might seek to bombard and then land upon the flat terrain in the weeks ahead. He fell backwards over a fence, but his legs dangled over its top, protecting his torso and not his legs. Ankle bandages hid the shrapnel damage to his feet. “It’s dangerous there, you have to listen carefully,” Oleh said of detecting drones. “A double tap. That’s how they operate. They destroy a house, it burns. A minute later, another one comes, checking whether the house is burning or someone is trying to extinguish it. And then they kill and destroy further.” Oleh is one of many patients who live alone and cannot quickly be released from hospital as he is unable to walk, swelling occupancy on the ward. 犬を診察する「はしもと吹田アニマルクリニック」の橋本雄大院長（右）＝大阪府吹田市で（同クリニック提供） 　連日の厳しい暑さで体調を崩すペットの犬や猫が相次いでいる。 　＜朝6時でも散歩が暑すぎる＞ 　＜移動中にペットが熱中症になってしまった＞ 　＜出掛ける時は、カートに扇風機で対策してます＞ 　X（ツイッター）にも、飼い主のそんな声が数多く投稿されている。 　熱中症を予防するにはどうすればいいのか。発症後の対応は？ 「例年より1、2割多い」 　大阪府吹田市にある動物病院「はしもと吹田アニマルクリニック」では、熱中症やその疑いで受診する犬や猫が5月末ごろから増え始めた。 　「例年より時期的に早く、全体の受診に占める熱中症の割合も1、2割は多い印象です」 　そう話すのは、クリニック院長で獣医師の橋本雄大さん（31）だ。 　診察に訪れた時には呼吸困難に陥っていて、気管挿管して一命をとりとめた例もあったという。 　橋本さんは「熱中症はすぐに対応しないと命に関わる。『軽度かも』と思ってもためらわず、早い段階で受診してほしい」と呼び掛ける。 Advertisement 約半数が「暑い時期に犬猫が体調変化」 　犬や猫は人のように汗腺が発達しておらず、汗をかいて体温を下げることができない。そのため、体温調節が難しく熱中症になりやすいという。 アイペット損保が実施した「＜犬編＞ペットの暑さ対策に関する調査」の結果＝アイペット損保提供 　実際、ペット保険の「アイペット損保」（東京都江東区）が昨年9月に犬の飼い主500人を対象にインターネットで実施した「＜犬編＞ペットの暑さ対策に関する調査」では、53％が「暑い時期に犬の体調に変化を感じた」と回答した。 　飼い犬が熱中症と診断されたことがあるとした人は全体の9・4％で、「暑さによる不調だと診断されたことはありますか」との問いには16・6％が「はい」と答えた。 　同じ時期に猫の飼い主500人に行った猫編の調査でも、暑い時期に猫の体調に変化を感じた人は45％に上った。飼い猫が熱中症と診断されたことがある人は5・8％、暑さによる不調と診断されたことがある人は10・2％いた。 熱中症のサインは 　では、ペットのどんな様子が熱中症のサインと考えられるのか。 　橋本さんによると、特に注目すべきなのは呼吸と体温だ。呼吸が速く「ハアハア」が止まらない、体や耳が熱いといった場合は熱中症の可能性が高い。 　他にも、ぐったりする、よだれがたくさん出る、吐くなどの症状が表れることもある。 　悪化すると、荒い呼吸をし始め、舌や口の粘膜が青紫色になる「チアノーゼ」の症状が出て意識を失うことがあるが、その時はもう「一刻を争う状況」だという。 予防と発症後の対応どうすれば 　熱中症を予防するには具体的にどうすればいいのか。 ペットの熱中症対策には冷房の適切な使用も欠かせない＝福岡市東区で2021年7月14日、末永麻裕撮影 　熱中症の危険が高まるのは、クーラーのない室内での留守番や、暑い時間帯の散歩などだ。そのため、ペットを置いて出掛ける際は室内を25～28度に保つことが望ましい。 　散歩も気温が低い早朝などに行うか、土や芝生を通るコースに変えることも効果的だという。 　「あまりにも暑ければ、散歩をやめることも一つの手だと知ってほしい」 　万が一発症した場合は、できるだけ早く受診することが基本となる。 　応急処置としては、ぬらしたタオルを全身にかけたり、首元やそけい部などにある太い血管を氷のうなどで冷やしたりすることが有効だ。 肉球やけどにも注意 　一方で、暑い時期に注意すべきなのは熱中症だけではない。 　「気温が35～40度程度でも、アスファルトは50度以上の高温になることはざら。マンホールの上なんて熱した鉄板そのものです」 　肉球をやけどしないようにするには、専用の靴や靴下をはかせることも効果的だが、まずは飼い主が手で地面に触れ、温度を確認して安全かどうかを判断する必要がある。 　橋本さんは「動物は想像以上に熱を感じている。人よりも暑さによるリスクは高いことを認識すべきだ」と警鐘を鳴らす。【田中理知】 View the full article
