If you spotted a large boat with tall poles in the Port of Fort Pierce during the weekend and early in the week, you're not alone. Social media users shared photos and videos of the large vessel, which TCPalm identified as the L/B Robert. It was in Fort Pierce before departing for Port Fourchon, Louisiana's southernmost port, on Aug. 18, 2025, according to MarineTraffic Live Ships Map. Recent port calls for the vessel include it being in Fort Pierce on Aug. 14 for 16 hours and 48 minutes before returning on Aug. 16 and departing on Aug. 18, according to VesselFinder. A Croatian freediver has achieved a seemingly impossible feat. On June 14 of this year, Vitomir Maričić took one last gulp of pure oxygen and lay down in a pool. There he remained, cool as a sea cucumber, for 29 minutes and 3 seconds. That's officially the longest held voluntary breath, according to Guinness World Records. Maričić beat the previous record holder by nearly 5 minutes. Nearly half an hour without air is mind boggling. That's roughly twice as long as a bottlenose dolphin is thought to hold its breath. With that sort of performance, Maričić could give a harbor seal a run for its money. With each breath, a seal can replace 90 percent of the air in its lungs – but our species can only replace 20 percent. To keep up, we need more breaths to fill our lungs with fresh air. To get as much oxygen into his body as it could possibly carry, Maričić inhaled pure oxygen for 10 minutes before the attempt. This increased the oxygen dissolved in his blood plasma, which is a crucial reservoir for the body's tissues. On an Instagram reel, Maričić explains that he started his record-breaking attempt with nearly five times more oxygen in his body than usual. Without that, he never could have lasted so long. Even when breathing normal air, however, the Croatian athlete's abilities are impressive. He can hold his breath for up to 10 minutes and 8 seconds. The Guinness World Record for unaided breath-holding is 11 minutes and 35 seconds, and it was set by Branko Petrovic of Serbia in 2014. To put that in perspective, the average person can hold their breath for between 30 and 90 seconds. According to the official Guinness website, Maričić attempted the longest held breath in June to bring attention to ocean conservation. Having already racked up a few related world records so far, perhaps Maričić will next turn his eye to Petrovic's record. NEW YORK − A 6-year-old student and her family were deported just before the start of the new school year in New York, a case sparking uproar across the state − including from the governor and officials in the nation's largest public school system. The second-grade New York City public school student went with her mother and older brother on Aug. 12 to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement check-in at a federal building in lower Manhattan when agents detained them, a family lawyer told USA TODAY. New York City officials confirmed the student and her mother, who were living in Queens, were deported the morning of Aug. 19. The Ecuadorian family, who sought asylum in the country after arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border in December 2022, were among migrants detained in controversial tactics by the Trump administration while people attend routine immigration court hearings or ICE check-ins. New York City schools saw increased enrollment driven, in part, by families who had sought asylum during the Biden administration. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul weighed in on the family’s behalf, and school officials are working to assure students that schools will remain a welcoming place. “She had no power to decide which country she would be living,” said Astrid Avedissian, a lawyer for one of the student's siblings, who is 16. "She had no power to decide which border she would be crossing." 85259555007 The student's mother, Martha, consistently attended check-ins after a deportation order was issued in June 2024 after her family's asylum application was denied, Avedissian said. Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE, said Martha and two of her children “all received final orders of removal from an immigration judge.” “Parents, who are here illegally, can take control of their departure with the CBP Home App,” McLaughlin said in a statement, referring to the repurposed application that allows people to leave the country. On Aug. 19, New York City Councilmember Shekar Krishnan and state Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, both representatives in Queens, confirmed the student and her mother were deported. ICE records show her brother, Manuel, 19, is still in custody. "Deporting a 6-year-old child two weeks before she is supposed to start school, separating her and her mother from their family, is cruel," Krishnan and Cruz said in a joint statement. "It is a shameful stain on our country's history and conscience." Since Aug. 14, he has been held in Delaney Hall, a privately run adult detention center in nearby Newark, New Jersey, that has also faced scrutiny for its conditions. The children have a pending application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for Special Immigrant Juvenile status for those under 21 who face abuse, abandonment, or neglect, Avedissian said. They received orders from Queens County Family Court in April that effectively made Martha their sole guardian, and allowed them to apply for the juvenile status since reunification with their father wouldn’t be possible, Avedissian said. While Martha and her two children were detained, she has two other children, a 16-year-old daughter who is now being taken care of by her 21-year-old son, Avedissian said. "Together we are better.” Nearly half of its students are English language learners, and more than 90% are classified as economically disadvantaged, state data showed. After years of declining enrollment, city public schools saw more students due to the influx of migrant families seeking asylum in the United States, often bused by Republican-led states to New York. Since President Donald Trump took office, a few students have been detained, beginning this summer. In a statement, Nicole Brownstein, a New York City Public Schools spokesperson, said the district stands with all of its students. When a family is detained, the district connects them with legal support and other resources. "We want to reassure all families: our schools are safe, welcoming places, and we encourage you to continue sending your children to school, where they are cared for and valued," Brownstein said. Naveed Hasan, a member of the city's Public Schools Panel for Educational Policy, which oversees the school district, said her family’s case reaffirms fears about students and families targeted by immigration enforcement. “The potential for losing access to your child, or for children to not see their parents because they got detained on the streets of New York City, is very real,” he said. “That’s been affecting everything.” The issues only appear to be worsening, which could affect student attendance and enrollment, he said. Hochul had called for the immediate return of the student and her family to New York. “Instead of preparing her daughter for school, this mother and her daughter have been separated from their family and sent to a facility in Texas,” Hochul said in an Aug. 18 statement. MADRID.- Es un ritual de verano. Como comer una sandía fría al caer la tarde, tomar higos directamente del árbol o tumbarse sobre una manta en medio de la noche para observar el paso de las Perseidas. Recolectar caparazones y caracoles a la orilla del mar forma parte de las tradiciones más típicas de agosto. Pero tiene un costo, siempre lo ha tenido. “Supongamos lo siguiente”, dice Michal Kowalewski, investigador de la Universidad de Florida (Estados Unidos) especializado en el estudio de invertebrados: “Hay, anualmente y casi con certeza en todo el mundo, alrededor de 10 mil millones de visitas a playas. Y digamos que se recoge una caracola por cada 100 visitas, lo cual suena a poco, pero aun así estaríamos hablando de 10.000 toneladas que desaparecen de las playas cada año”. Esto es como si se llenaran hasta arriba tres piscinas olímpicas. Parece un gesto mínimo e inocente, pero el despunte del turismo masivo en las playas mediterráneas está alterando sus ecosistemas de manera irreversible y ahora cargar con un souvenir de verano a casa está dejando una huella cada vez más profunda. Los científicos vienen alertando de esto desde hace años. Un estudio de Kowalewski con investigadores de la Universidad de Barcelona publicado en la revista PLOS One, en 2014, ya evidenciaba una disminución drástica en el número de caracolas presentes en la playa Larga de Salou (Cataluña). Los autores compararon dos series de muestreos sistemáticos realizados en la misma localidad con 30 años de diferencia: el primero entre 1978 y 1981, y el segundo entre 2008 y 2010. Así, encontraron que la presencia de caracolas se redujo casi tres veces durante el período de estudio. El efecto turísticoEsta disminución coincidió en el tiempo con un incremento casi paralelo en el número de turistas, que se multiplicó por 2,7 en ese lapso. En cambio, las condiciones físicas del entorno —como la energía del oleaje y el clima— se mantuvieron estables. Además, los indicadores ecológicos extraídos del estudio de esas piezas —dominancia de especies, distribución de tamaños, frecuencia de perforación de los caparazones por depredadores— fueron constantes a lo largo de los años. Esto indica que no ha habido cambios sustanciales en la dinámica de las poblaciones de moluscos, ni en la estructura básica del ecosistema marino local. Así parece que la culpa es de los humanos. PUBLICIDAD“Más turismo implicar una mayor urbanización de la zona costera y una mayor actividad de embarcaciones”, apunta Kowalewski. Y añade: “El uso de maquinaria para la limpieza de las playas también aumenta progresivamente y esto es relevante porque implica el paso de maquinaria sobre la arena que pulveriza las caparazones”. Además, está el detalle de la recolección. Los especialistas advierten que el aumento del turismo en las costas genera "presión" en el ecosistema y afecta a la flora y la fauna - Créditos: @Emilio Morenatti“Claro que no es inocuo”, asegura Jordi Martinell Callicó, otro de los autores del estudio que, además, ha pasado toda su vida en la playa que se eligió para hacer el muestreo y ha visto con sus propios ojos el deterioro progresivo de la región. “La presión que tiene la zona costera es muy fuerte”, agrega. “Estoy de acuerdo en que llevarse una sola caracola no tiene gran importancia”, comenta Kowalewski. El problema es que miles de millones de personas, al visitar las playas cada año, a menudo se lleven cubetas enteras. “Las colocan en casa, pero con el tiempo, la mayoría de ellas terminan en la basura o en vertederos”, advierte. Desde hace décadas, esto, además, está técnicamente prohibido en España. La Ley de Costas establece que arena, piedras, caracolas, moluscos y fósiles playeros son bienes de dominio público y que su extracción no autorizada es ilegal. Si bien tomar una o dos como recuerdo no se persigue activamente, puede acarrear sanciones de entre 500 euros y 3.000 euros. Una función ambiental esencialEn el salón de casa son decoración, pero en las playas, los caparazones realizan múltiples servicios ecosistémicos y tienen una función ambiental esencial. “No están ahí por casualidad: forman parte del engranaje natural que mantiene vivas y estables nuestras playas”, explica Fernando García Guerrero, uno de los responsables de la colección de malacología del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales. PUBLICIDADLos expertos consultados detallan que una de las competencias principales de los caparazones es la estabilización física de las playas. “Cada una, por pequeña que parezca, ayuda a mantener la arena en su sitio, frenando su arrastre con cada marea. Gracias a ellas, las playas conservan su forma, su firmeza y su capacidad para resistir la erosión”, detalla García. “Los caparazones, al disolverse, también afectan la acidez del agua, ya que contienen carbonato cálcico, que modifica el pH del océano”, explica Martinell. Esto ayuda a reciclar calcio y otros elementos al mar, lo que colabora a mantener los ciclos vitales dentro del agua, incluida la generación de nuevas caracolas. Las caracolas son, a su vez, refugio y hábitat para muchos organismos. Algas, pastos marinos, cangrejos ermitaños, pequeños invertebrados y hasta aves costeras las utilizan como hogar o como material para construir uno. Algunos pájaros incluso las aprovechan para afilarse el pico. Es indiscutible: su pérdida altera el equilibrio físico, químico y biológico de las playas. Mejor dejarla donde estáA estas alturas, el impacto de la actividad humana sobre la costa parece inevitable. “Sin embargo, todavía podemos minimizar nuestra huella mientras paseamos”, espeta Kowalewski. El científico dice que abogaría por lo más sencillo y a la vez más complicado de todo: educación ambiental. “Creo que esa es la mejor forma de empezar a mitigar el problema”, opina. Martinell coincide: “Hace falta concienciar a los veraneantes para que sean cuidadosos, respeten el medio playero y no lo destruyan. Llevarse una puede parecer nada. Pero no es necesario, mejor dejarla donde está”. PUBLICIDAD“La buena noticia -consigna García- es que disfrutar de la playa y cuidar de ella no solo es compatible, sino que deberían ir de la mano”. En lugar de llevarse las caracolas, el científico sugiere observarlas, fotografiarlas o simplemente admirarlas. “La experiencia no pierde valor por no tener un objeto físico como recuerdo; al contrario, ganamos en conexión con la naturaleza”, espeta.
