Read the full story on The Auto Wire Car Theft Is Still A Huge ProblemWith the FBI revealing its 2024 crime rate statistics, many news outlets are loudly trumpeting that car theft is down nationwide. While it is down 28.6 percent versus 2023, that doesn’t mean we’ve returned to the levels we saw in 2019. Instead, car thefts are still a huge problem. Find out which generation is most likely to be victimized by car thieves. Many news outlets have pulled back on covering this problem, probably for a variety of reasons. But that doesn’t mean not many cars are being stolen these days. After all, according to the FBI, the motor vehicle theft rate for 2024 was higher than for 2021, 2020, and 2019. In other words, we haven’t returned to “normal” yet. The FBI says in the US, there’s a stolen car reported to law enforcement every 35.9 seconds. Chances are you know someone whose car has been stolen in the last five years. It might be that person hasn’t broadcast that fact out there or even actively has hidden it out of shame – it’s a thing – but you likely know at least one person, if not multiples. That person might even be you. But you aren’t just some helpless victim who can only sit and wait for the inevitable to happen. There are things you can do to protect your ride. Parking it inside, especially at night, is a good step. So is installing security cameras around your house, putting your key fob in a Faraday cage at night, locking the doors, and installing an aftermarket device that prevents thieves from reprogramming the ignition. You also can take steps to recover your car if it is stolen. One of the best is to install multiple tracking devices on it. While you should use the factory GPS tracker, thieves usually know how to disable those. Installing an aftermarket device is a good call. So is dropping a cheap tracker like an Apple AirTag in an inconspicuous place. Image via Mike Haelterman/Facebook Join our Newsletter, subscribe to our YouTube page, and follow us on Facebook. Could Dodge’s 8/8 Reveal Mark the Hemi V8’s Return to the Charger? originally appeared on Autoblog. A Muscle Car Lineup Without a V8Dodge's muscle car portfolio has been without its most defining feature since the start of 2025. The discontinuation of the last-generation Charger and Challenger brought an end to the brand's Hemi V8 offerings, replaced by the all-electric Charger Daytona and a new combustion-powered Charger Sixpack that falls short of two cylinders. While the Daytona EV signals Dodge's future ambitions, early sales figures suggest hesitation from traditional buyers. Through the first half of 2025, Dodge has sold just over 4,000 Charger Daytonas – nowhere near enough to fill the void left by the V8-powered models. The Charger Sixpack, available in two high-output inline-six variants, still lacks the visceral appeal of a V8 for Dodge loyalists. Interestingly, the company has already reversed course in its truck lineup, recently reintroducing the Hemi V8 in the Ram 1500 after a leadership shakeup and a regulatory rollback. It stands to reason the muscle car lineup could be next, and Dodge seems to have chosen a symbolic date for it. The timing—8/8/2025—offers a memorable anchor for what could be a high-profile comeback. Though the company hasn't confirmed what the new car will be, the context of the reveal and the marketing language strongly hint at something aligned with Dodge's performance roots. Roadkill Nights, now in its 10th year, has become a marquee event in the American performance calendar. Held the weekend before the Woodward Dream Cruise, it draws a national audience of muscle car fans and drag racing enthusiasts. With Dodge at a crossroads and still reeling from a nearly 50% year-on-year sales drop, this event gives the brand a focused, enthusiast-friendly platform to reassert its identity. DodgeRoadkill Nights Stacked with Fan-Favorite ActivitiesBeyond the potential Hemi-related announcement, Roadkill Nights 2025 is packed with activities that target the brand's core audience. Attendees can expect thrill rides in the next-generation Charger, a Direct Connection Grudge Race, and 12,000-horsepower burnout exhibitions by NHRA stars Matt Hagan and Leah Pruett. Plus, racing legend Tony Stewart will appear alongside Dodge Badassadors – new brand reps who will interact with fans throughout the event. The main event on August 9 will also feature car shows, simulators, a showcase of Direct Connection parts, and special Dodge and Ram displays. For those who don't have the time to attend physically, the August 8 reveal and August 9 main program will both be streamed online. This is the £242,945 Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge, a Rolls-Royce with some extra edge. It’s more subversive, more dynamic car than a traditional Rolls but, the company says, still one that retains the Ghost’s core values of comfort and absolute luxury. The Black Badge uses a ‘high power’ version of Rolls-Royce’s 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 making 692bhp (600PS) and 664lb ft (900Nm) which, in our full road test, was enough to propel the Black Badge Ghost to 60mph in 4.5sec and to a standing quarter mile in just 12.7sec at 114.6mph. But numbers are of minor interest when it comes to Rolls-Royces. These cars are about how they feel. So how does the most dynamically adept car the company makes go down the road? Read the full story on Backfire News Tesla Cybertrucks Will Be Going To WarOn future battlefields, combatants might be rolling around in Tesla Cybertrucks instead of a Toyota Hilux. At least that’s what the brass in the United States Air Force believes, which is why it’s procured two of the all-electric pickups to use for precisions munitions testing and training. The Army is using an unarmored GM truck to replace the Humvee. These are truly strange times, but we can see how the Cybertruck would be favored by militaries and insurgent groups. After all, they’re gaining in popularity with law enforcement, thanks to their ability to resist some gunfire. However, we’ve covered before how Elon Musk allegedly bricked a Russian warlord’s Cybertruck remotely. But militaries or insurgent groups could “jailbreak” Cybertrucks to avoid this in the future. The two Cybertrucks are part of a 33-vehicle order for the Air Force Testing Center to be delivered to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, reports TWZ after obtaining government documents spelling out the purchase intentions. But the Air Force doesn’t necessarily want functioning Cybertrucks. While the batteries have to be removed, the trucks also have to be capable of flat towing behind a truck. Image via Unplugged PerformanceInterestingly, none of the other 33 cars, trucks, and SUVs on the Air Force order list have a brand and model requested, just the Cybertrucks. The reasoning, as spelled out in redacted government documents has to do with the “design, materials, impact resistance, and innovative technologies” used by Tesla to make the pickup. The document goes on to say the military expects to encounter combatants in Cybertrucks because “they have been found not to receive the normal extent of damaged expected upon major impact.” In other words, Cybertrucks have armoring not found on other consumer vehicles, so they make for an ideal budget fighting transport. This could mean we’ll see the Teslas with machine guns or rocket launchers mounted in the rear, like how the Toyota Hilux has been used on battlefields for a long time. I Drove the 2025 Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo. Here’s My Brutally Honest Review originally appeared on Autoblog. Yes, you can ball on a budgetWhen you read or hear the word “cheap,” you likely think of cut corners, cheap interior materials, and a lack of safety features or creature comforts. I’m reminded of my first car, a 1999 Toyota Corolla LE. It didn’t have ABS, electronic windows, air conditioning, or even a tachometer. It wasn’t fun to drive, but it was efficient. It got me where I needed to go. There was no soul or personality to it; it was just an engine on wheels. “Cheap” still carries a lot of weight, and a lot of automakers don’t appreciate it being associated with their brands. Affordability is hard to come by with modern cars, as buyer expectations are at an all-time high. Kristen BrownThe Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Subaru Impreza have done a great job at keeping costs low without compromising on features or technology. But Kia is here to make waves with the K4 GT-Line. It’s packed full of features, the design language is sassy and fun, and the optional turbocharged engine is efficient and powerful enough to bring a smile to your face. As the second to the top-of-the-line model, its MSRP is $26,365, which, at that price, most would assume doesn’t mean a vibrant and responsive dual-screen setup, a wireless phone charger, a potent sound system from Harmon Kardon, or even seat heaters. But it does. And that’s what should make it a trend setter. It doesn't have a turbo, but it's worth spending extra for oneThe Kia K4 GT-Line comes with a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and that’s paired with a CVT. It had enough power to keep things interesting, but the CVT was a bit rubberbandy when you wanted a little more oomph. If you opt for the GT-Line Turbo, it features a 190-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is the one I'd pay $29,695 for. The standard engine packs a bigger punch, and it helped make my drive home through the Mt. Hood National Forest so much more fun. Plus, it had a charming exhaust note. On my three-hour drive home, I averaged about 35.7 miles to the gallon. When I was driving around town, the small FWD sedan scored an average of 25.3 mpg, which was impressive, considering how many trucks I had to pass and the traffic coming home. Kristen BrownNaturally, its competition is known for higher mileage per gallon, and the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic can be purchased as a hybrid for even better mileage, but I can promise you they’re not as much fun to drive. The Subaru Impreza comes close, but its naturally aspirated engine is sluggish in comparison. The Mazda3 can be bought with a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine for more horsepower than the GT-Line Turbo, but it’s more expensive, ranging from $33,890 to $35,890. The K4’s turbocharged engine is plenty powerful for the price. The interior suggests a higher price tagGranted, corners had to be cut to keep the cost low, so interior materials aren’t the greatest. However, by using differing textures, contrasting colors, and drawing attention to the 12.3-inch dual-screen setup, the K4 didn’t feel cheap. That's especially since both screens were customizable, vibrant, responsive, and pleasantly high-resolution. The transmission tunnel was transformed into a functional and very handy area. I loved the adjustable cup holders since they created a space for my massive emotional support water bottle. By pushing a button, they could be made smaller to cradle a cup of coffee, complete with spring-loaded pieces that keep it from sliding or moving. When you’re finished with it, you can fold them back up to accommodate a big water bottle again. Kristen BrownCommon driver functions like A/C controls, temperature adjustment, fan speeds, and direction were on the screen, but they were always on display to the right of the steering wheel for ease of access. Fan speed and temperature could be adjusted with a simple button under the main screen, too, so you didn’t have to fiddle with a screen while you’re driving. In the GT-Line, it had comfy and bolstered racing-style seats, which were incredibly comfortable on my long drive from Vancouver, Washington, to Bend, Oregon, and when paired with Kia’s crazy accurate and effective adaptive cruise control with lane keep assist, it was divine. My husband’s tall, and he said the way the interior was laid out made the driver and passenger’s footwell one of the most spacious we’ve both experienced. So, not only was the drive fun, but it was super comfortable–no matter where you were sitting. The exterior design helps separate it from the competitionThe headlights speak Kia’s design language fluently, being long and tall, and utilizing bright orange LED lights as daytime running lights. When the headlights are on, they’re round, like we see on the Kia Carnival or Sportage. It helps keep the looks in the family, but also looks quite handsome on the little, economical sedan. Paired with the bluish gray that my K4 loaner was in, made it look the part. When I dropped some coffee off for my husband, one of the first things he said about the body style was that it “kind of looked like a fastback,” as the rear curved from the end of the roof gracefully to the end of the trunk. The glossy black wheels were very Kia, being funky but artistic, and complemented the styling perfectly. Kristen BrownThe nice thing about the K4’s styling is that there aren’t any other sedans that look like it. The Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Subaru Impreza are all beautiful cars, but they’re muted compared to the K4 GT-Line. Their price tags are very reflective of how they look, while the Kia K4 stands out. The ride quality was balanced, albeit a little noisyNaturally, a $26,365 car isn’t going to have a fancy, adaptive suspension setup. It only has two drive modes, Normal and Sport, and Sport helped keep all 190 ponies poised and ready to hit the road. It kept the RPMs high and the gearing as low as possible to prioritize power when it’s needed, which came in handy on the drive through the mountain pass. Normal was the opposite, and was perfect for daily driving through Bend. The drive modes didn’t affect the suspension, but it did sharpen up the throttle response and tighten the steering, which was nice. The suspension is fixed, but it’s balanced, helping keep the K4 steady while cornering without being too stiff for daily driving with my toddlers in the back. Kristen BrownHowever, it was very noisy. There wasn’t much between the tires and the road, but some fairly thin metal, and that translated to an insane amount of road noise. If it weren’t for the updated and premium sound system with wireless Android Auto, the road noise would have driven me mad. Around town, it wasn’t too bad, but the faster you drove, the louder it became. When my daughter was in the backseat, I had to tell her to speak up so I could hear her, and most times she had to yell to get her message across. It could easily be a family car, but it’s best for young singlesInstalling my toddlers’ car seats was just as easy as some of the more expensive cars I’ve reviewed. The top tether points were just behind the headrests, and they were easy to remove without having to fold the seats down to wiggle them out of the top of the seat. Finding the lower anchor points and securing them was easy, too. The GT-Line didn’t have vents or climate control settings in the rear, which is a fine cut to me, since they’re so close to the front of the car, but you can get that in the GT-Line Turbo. Two USB-C charging ports are located in the rear, allowing older kids to charge their devices on long trips. The trunk was incredibly generous for a car of its size, and it could accommodate a double stroller, a diaper bag, toys, and some groceries without issue. Kristen BrownAt the price point, though, I think families would benefit from an SUV, like the Subaru Forester, Subaru Crosstrek, or even the Honda CR-V. But if you’re dead set on a sedan, the Kia K4 could easily do it. However, I pictured the ideal driver being a college student looking to get out of the Honda Accord they inherited from their grandma, or a wealthy family buying a safe, economical, and inexpensive first car for their high schooler who just got their license. It’s fun enough to keep anyone happy, but not quick enough to get anyone in trouble–and it’s very safe. The low entry point and seating position might be difficult for older buyers, but youngsters would find it just as easy to get into as its competitors. Final thoughtsThe Kia K4 GT-Line is a sedan that truly punches way above its weight, and it’s impressive how much was packed into such a low price tag without feeling like there were a lot of cuts and compromises. It was fun to drive, just as fun to look at, and very clever. I hope that other automakers look closely at the K4 and take notes on how to make a cheap car not feel cheap or like you’re missing out. I found it to be a fun little car to drive my kids in, but I would have loved it even more if I didn’t have kids to bend over to get out of the car. If I were back in Monterey, California, for college, this would have been a dream of a first car. I Drove the 2025 Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo. "Van a lastimar a uno de nosotros". stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us. Two people were killed in Nash County, North Carolina, on Wednesday after their vehicle was swept off the road and into floodwaters during a period of heavy rain and dangerous runoff. Officers were dispatched to a flooded stretch of Highway 581 in Spring Hope, which is located about 40 miles northeast of Raleigh, around 2:14 p.m. EDT, where they found a vehicle partially submerged in a ditch more than 6 feet deep filled with fast-moving water, according to a press release from the Spring Hope Police Department. A female occupant had climbed onto the roof while a male remained inside. Officers instructed them to stay in place, but the woman fell into the water. Lt. Leary from Spring Hope Police attempted a rescue but was swept downstream and later rescued. The male occupant also entered the water and was swept away. Both victims were later recovered downstream during search efforts involving multiple local agencies and swift water rescue teams. They were identified as 24-year-old Lottie Alston and 55-year-old Raymond Evans Jr., both from Louisburg, North Carolina. "This vehicle was swept off the right side of the road and went about 30 to 35 yards into a ravine or ditch area," Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said. "One of the occupants fell into the water. [An officer] risked his own life trying to go out and save these two individuals. He was rescued, but both occupants were ultimately found deceased." Over 9 inches of rain fell in parts of North Carolina on Wednesday. The deadly flooding came as a stalled front and waves of low pressure dumped heavy rain across parts of the Southeast, with more storms in the forecast. Sheriff Stone urged drivers to take rising water seriously: "If you see that there's water going across the road and you cannot see the yellow line - turn around, don't drown. It's very simple." A central Ohio community has again landed on a prominent annual lineup of the nation's hottest housing markets. Coming in at #10, Bexley edged its way onto this year's list, prepared by Realtor.com. The listing service bases the ranking on two figures: the number of views that listings in different markets attract, and the number of days homes are listed before going into contract. A Bexley home for sale in 2023Bexley homes attract about 3.4 times as many views as the U.S. average and land in contract in 25 days on average. Bexley isn't the only, or the highest, Ohio city to make the list. The Cleveland suburb of Strongsville landed at No. 6. More: Central Ohio's hottest housing markets: Where homes are selling for the most money The Boston suburb of Beverly, Massachusetts, topped this year's Top 10 list, which included seven Northeast communities and three from the Midwest. “In a year when affordability challenges and limited inventory continue to weigh on buyers, the ZIP codes rising to the top of our list stand out for offering both strong value and livability,” Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale said in a news release. “Once again, the Northeast and Midwest dominate, driven by buyers from high-cost metros looking for relief without sacrificing access to jobs and amenities.” Central Ohio communities have been a regular feature on the annual Realtor.com list, and other "hottest-market" lists. Realtor.com named Gahanna the nation's hottest housing market the last two years, and, in a separate ranking, the service last year named Columbus the nation's "most popular" housing market. Other recent central Ohio mentions on Realtor.com's hot-market lists: In 2022, Worthington was ranked No. 3 on the list; Lincoln Village landed sixth in 2021; and Reynoldsburg was second in 2020. A 34-year-old youth pastor in Virginia is facing federal charges over allegations he posed as a teenage boy to exchange nude photos and videos with young girls, telling one of them last month that it was “time for her to see her first d**k,” according to an FBI probable cause affidavit obtained first by The Independent. “I don’t know if im readyyyy im only 15 and I barely know anything abt that whole topiccc,” the girl responded. Throughout the conversation, Jacob Ryan Barnett – who is known as Pastor Jake to parishioners – “repeatedly asked” the youngster for pictures of her crotch, the affidavit states. On at least two occasions, it says Barnett messaged with the teen while speaking to his wife on the phone, at one point receiving a clip of the girl’s exposed genitalia she had filmed at the age of 14. Barnett, the father of a two-year-old boy, was arrested in North Carolina on Wednesday, several hours after The Independent requested comment from the Richmond, Virginia, U.S. Attorney’s Office. Charging documents had been accidentally left unsealed before FBI agents took Barnett into custody. Reached by phone before he was apprehended, Barnett claimed to be “totally confused” about the situation and declined to elaborate. Youth pastor Jacob Ryan Barnett (left), seen here with his wife and two-year-old child, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly swapping nude photos with teenage girls. If convicted, he faces a maximum of life in prison. (Catawba Valley Baptist Church)Barnett is the Associate Pastor of Students & Mobilization at the Catawba Valley Baptist Church. He previously served for five years as the head of the children’s ministry at the Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown, Virginia. “Jake felt the call to ministry when he was in middle school,” Barnett’s church bio reads. “He has volunteered in children's and youth ministry at each church he has attended. Jake loves teaching the next generation about the truths of the Bible and serving God's people.” He graduated from the College at Southeastern in 2018 and is currently working on his M.A. at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, according to the bio. His wife Cayla graduated from Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University – which has endured sex scandals of its own – in 2020. “Together, they enjoy visiting historical places such as the Battlefields of Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg,” the bio says. “Jake and Cayla love playing board games, card games, and spending time with family.” Eleven days ago, Barnett delivered a sermon, “The Story of Salvation,” in which he touched on the apparent importance of “settling with your accuser.” The emails and phone numbers Barnett used to communicate with his alleged victims matched certain ones he used to communicate with churchgoers; a source close to the investigation confirmed the details of Barnett’s professional background. A call to Catawba Valley Baptist Church on Thursday went straight to voicemail. Barnett does not yet have an attorney listed in court records. The Catawba Valley Baptist Church in Troutville, Virginia, with the Ten Commandments etched into a rock outside, where 'Pastor Jake' Barnett led the flock until his Wednesday arrest. He is accused of soliciting explicit photos and videos from teenage girls. (Google Maps)On May 20, the FBI National Threat Operations Center received an online tip from a mother in Michigan that a then-unknown subject had been attempting to groom her 15-year-old daughter, according to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case. Two days earlier, the teen had received a message on TikTok that “appeared to belong to a 17-year-old boy from Virginia who called himself ‘Jodie Johnson,’” the affidavit states. It says investigating agents interviewed the teen’s mother, who said she had gone through her daughter’s phone and found a text chain between her and “Johnson,” in which the girl had sent him an assortment of nude pictures. In early June, the FBI subpoenaed Verizon for an ID of the account holder behind Johnson’s number, which showed it belonged to Barnett. Google records the bureau obtained showed the number linked to his various emails, one of which was his official Bethel Baptist Church account, the affidavit shows. Barnett’s TikTok account appeared to be following “thousands of minor girls,” according to the affidavit. The 15-year-old girl, who is identified in court filings as “M.V.,” for “Minor Victim,” told investigators that she knew people from Virginia and thought “Johnson” looked like one of her friends. The messages showed Barnett, as Johnson, pestering M.V. for nude photos and videos, and specifically requested “something that he could masturbate to,” which she duly provided, the affidavit continues. In an interview with an FBI adolescent specialist, M.V. said she at first “didn’t want to” send Barnett the explicit materials, but eventually gave in. However, she specified that everything she shared was already on her camera roll from when she was 14 or 15 years-old, according to the affidavit. From there, things became “very graphic,” with Barnett describing to M.V. how he would have sex with her, the affidavit goes on. Barnett then sent M.V. a picture of himself in boxers, with the outline of his genitalia visible through the underwear, the affidavit says. “[Barnett] asked M.V. when she last shaved her vagina,” the affidavit contends. “She lied and said the day before… M.V. sent an older video of herself masturbating when she was 14, which depicted her exposed vagina.” While M.V. was asleep, her mom took her daughter’s phone to message someone and spotted the photos and video she had sent to Barnett, according to the affidavit. It says that when she googled the recipient’s number, she saw that it belonged to “a grown man named Jacob Barnett.” Phone records showed Barnett had chatted with M.V. while talking to his wife on at least two occasions. On May 19, at 4:30 p.m., Barnett messaged M.V.’s phone, answered a call from his wife at 4:32 p.m., and M.V. messaged Barnett a batch of photos at 4:33 p.m. He then wrote back to M.V. at 4:34 p.m., according to the affidavit. “In other words, within less than five minutes, Barnett messaged M.V., talked to his wife for a minute, and messaged M.V. again,” the affidavit states. Youth pastor Jacob Ryan Barnett, 34, used TikTok to contact young girls, according to the FBI (Getty Images)On May 20, at 10:34 a.m., Barnett messaged M.V., answered a call from his wife at 10:35 a.m., and messaged Barnett while that call was still in progress, the affidavit maintains. Prior to taking his wife’s call, Barnett had responded to M.V.’s previous four messages “within approximately 30 seconds,” according to the affidavit. In late July, records from Snap, Inc. revealed Barnett had also been communicating with a second 15-year-old girl whose username The Independent is withholding for her privacy. Under the usernames “duh_jodie” and “jodie_j1234,” Barnett allegedly told the girl it “was time to see her first d**k,” which she resisted, but sent pictures of his private parts anyway, the affidavit states. While haranguing the girl for nude shots of herself, Barnett “described how he would have sex with [her] and encouraged her to masturbate,” according to the affidavit. “She said she had never masturbated, prompting Barnett to explain how to do it,” the affidavit says. She ended up sending Barnett a slew of photos, but agents were unable to view them because they were either encrypted or deleted, the affidavit explains. However, the context of the conversation made it clear they were sexually explicit in nature. Barnett is now charged with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life. He is set to make his initial court appearance in Roanoke early next week. View the full article

"Wars must end. Someone has to win, and someone has to lose,” Fine told The Jerusalem Post. Republican Congressman Randy Fine, a staunch pro-Israel voice from Florida, is spending this week in Israel - and his message to the Israeli government is crystal clear: stop apologizing, stop trying to please international critics, and focus on winning the war in Gaza. "Wars must end. Someone has to win, and someone has to lose,” Fine told The Jerusalem Post. “That’s how World War II ended. That’s how World War I ended. Israel’s problem is it stops wars without finishing the job.” Fine, one of the most vocal Jewish Republicans in the US House of Representatives, has met during his visit with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, opposition leader Yair Lapid, and other senior Israeli officials. While declining to reveal the content of his closed-door meeting with Netanyahu, Fine said it is ultimately up to the prime minister to decide how the war is conducted, but he made no secret of his own views: “I fully support Israel doing whatever it needs to do to get those 50 hostages home and ensure that Hamas is no longer in charge of Gaza.” Fighting two wars: military and propagandaBut for Fine, the battlefield is only half the war. The other front, he argues, is the information war, one in which, he believes, Israel is dangerously behind. Florida state representative Randy Fine gives a tour of his office in a video for the Florida House of Representatives' Youtube page (credit: FLORIDA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES YOUTUBE/SCREENSHOT)“As strongly as Israel is winning the military war, it’s losing the propaganda war,” he said. “Muslim terrorists are good at lying. They’re willing to lie, and the world is willing to believe them. Why? Because of antisemitism.” He recounted being interrupted by anti-Israel protesters both at congressional hearings and at political events in Florida, disrupting his speeches. “Israel is expected to do things no military in the history of the world has ever been asked to do,” Fine said. “You can never satisfy the unsatisfiable. So stop trying.” He added that no one is truly starving in Gaza - except for the hostages - and accused international media of spreading falsehoods. “Israel is doing more to support its enemies than any country in the history of the world. It’s not the facts that are the problem. It’s telling the story.” Asked if he had any advice for Israel in this PR battle, Fine pointed to Israeli military culture. “Go to an Israeli army base. You’ll see soldiers heating food in microwaves, not dining halls. Why? Because they’re focused on staying alive, not comfort,” he said. “And just like they don’t prioritize gourmet food, they don’t prioritize winning the information war. But they should. The facts are on Israel’s side.” 'Stop Trying to Please Jew-Haters'Fine did not mince words about international institutions and left-leaning media, accusing them of being driven by deep-rooted antisemitism. “There’s a disease in America: conservative politicians who want to be liked by The New York Times,” he said. “No matter what they do, they’ll never be liked. It’s the same with Israel; stop trying to win over the UN or Amnesty International. They will never like you.” Yet, while calling for less appeasement of international critics, Fine also stressed that Israel should not remain silent. “Do what’s right. But also forcefully tell the truth about what’s happening.” Support from the GOP—and TrumpFine pushed back on claims that Republican support for Israel is eroding, especially after several right-wing commentators and influencers, including figures like Tucker Carlson, voiced skepticism about US backing for Israel. “Look, there are 220 Republicans in the House. Two of them are antisemites. The rest? They love Israel,” he said. “In the Senate, all 53 Republicans have stood with Israel. So yes, the haters are loud, but they’re a tiny minority.” He attributed much of the online anti-Israel sentiment to foreign influence campaigns, saying, “Some of these influencers are being paid by Qatar. The rest are old-fashioned neo-Nazis who’ve been around since I was a kid.” And what about PresidentDonald Trump? “Israel has never had a better friend in the White House. Not even Harry Truman,” said Fine. “Trump has Israel’s back.” Time for sovereignty? As more Republicans speak openly in favor of Israeli sovereignty in parts of the West Bank, Fine said the idea is no longer fringe. “I dined this week with House Speaker Mike Johnson, who said that ‘Judea and Samaria belong to Israel.’ That’s unprecedented.” “There’s a growing Judea and Samaria caucus in Congress. That sentiment is only getting stronger,” he noted. “Gaza proved land-for-peace doesn’t work. Israel pulled Jews out of Gaza, even their graves, and handed it over—and what did they get in return?” His conclusion: “I don't think you can make peace with people who take it as a religious faith that they have to kill you.” View the full article

While much of the outrage over the rising number of immigration detention facilities is focused on Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz,” Georgia is quietly working on building the largest ICE facility in the country, thanks to the passage of President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” Charlton County, located 10 miles from the Florida border and 274 miles south of Atlanta, approved a nearly $50 million agreement with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in June to expand the Folkston ICE Processing Center from 1,100 detainees to nearly 3,000. The plans incorporate the shuttered D. Ray James Correctional Facility into the existing footprint. Trump’s budget allocates $45 billion for ICE detention centers through the end of September 2029. Folkston, a private prison run by The GEO Group, is not without considerable problems. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in 2022, the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General published the results of a 2021 inspection of the Folkston detention center, citing “unsanitary and dilapidated” facilities, with water leaks, mold and debris in the ventilation system, insect infestations, lack of access to hot showers, inoperable toilets, and no hot meals. “Folkston did not meet standards for facility conditions, medical care, grievances, segregation, staff-detainee communications, and handling of detainee property,” the report read. “We identified violations that compromised the health, safety, and rights of detainees.” Last year, Jaspal Singh, an Indian national, died after spending nine months in detention at Folkston. He was 57. “We are heartbroken by Mr. Singh’s passing while he was confined in this abusive and poorly managed facility that has been violating immigrants’ human rights since ICE began detaining people there in 2017,” said Meredyth Yoon, litigation director for Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta, in a statement calling for the facility’s closure. U.S. Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter, R-Georgia, has heralded the new detention facility as a boon for Charlton County’s economy, with the creation of 400 jobs and additional water and sewer revenue. Read More: Amid ICE Sweeps and Travel Bans, Here’s How to Support Black Immigrants in Atlanta Against the backdrop of the Georgia expansion are growing fears within Atlanta’s immigrant community that deportation efforts without due process will increase. Pew Research estimates around 200,000 Black immigrants, mostly from Jamaica, Haiti, and Nigeria, call metro Atlanta home. Capital B Atlanta spoke with Nana Gyamfi, executive director for The Black Alliance for Just Immigration, in June about why Black immigrants especially need to be on alert. She said blackness adds another critical level to the type of profiling that can lead to arrest by ICE officers “What we know from the data, as well as anecdotal experiences, is that most law enforcement interactions with Black immigrants begin as racial profiling that then goes down another road when the officer hears an accent or realizes there is a language barrier,” Gyamfi said. “As a result, Black migrants are detained, deported and held in solitary confinement at a disproportionately higher rate.” Trump’s travel ban adds another layer of concern: Eight out of 12 banned countries — and three out of the seven partially banned countries — are Black or African. Read More: After Morehouse Grad Detained by ICE, HBCU Community Sounds Alarm “Even though most people are focused on the Muslim element, the face of the ban is really a Black face,” Gyamfi said. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has already been ramping up efforts in the state to support Trump’s immigration. In March, he announced that the Georgia Department of Public Safety had requested ICE train 1,100 officers “to better assist in identifying and apprehending illegal aliens who pose a risk to public safety in the state.” Then in May, Kemp signed House Bill 1105, requiring sheriffs to hold suspects believed to be in the country illegally if they are wanted by ICE. None of the sheriffs in metro Atlanta’s five core counties are reportedly signed up to participate. The contract for the new Charlton County facility awaits approval by the Department of Government Efficiency. Staff writer Madeline Thigpen contributed to this report. Speed is addictive. We've yet to get our fill of it. Perhaps there's something in our consciousness that yearns for retribution for the centuries our ancestors spent hoofing it barefoot. Consider driving fast as payback for every broken wagon wheel or horse that stopped to think, "You know what, cowboy, we ain't boys anymore." Our reason for driving so fast is covered under the excuse known as "testing." Which we've done a lot of. So far in 2025, we've tested more than 120 vehicles. Tire pressures are set, electric cars get charged to 100 percent, gas cars get a full tank of fuel, on goes the GPS antenna, in goes the happy test driver among their spaghetti of Racelogic VBox data logger cords and equipment, off goes the climate control, and down goes the hammer. We measure straight-line acceleration (among several other metrics) to quantify performance differences in cars rather than trusting manufacturer claims. In many cases, we beat those claims. We also do it because it's a convenient excuse to borrow cars with 1000 horsepower, and it sure beats arguing with that horse. It's been a fruitful year of testing. There are a lot of "quickest"s and "most"s. The top three (so far) quickest cars to reach 60 mph on this list did it in 2.2 seconds or less. There's a diverse representation of powertrains among the quickest, meaning this isn't just a bunch of electric sports cars. Rear-wheel-drive V-8-powered rides, a 7000-pound pickup, and no shortage of big-power plug-in hybrids make the list. All of which are easy on the eyes. None of which rest lightly on the pocketbook. Here are the quickest cars to reach 60 mph in 2025—as of this publish date—starting with the slowest. Context is important. 2025 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: 11.8 SecondsSlowest in 2025We'll start things slow, and while at the helm of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, there is no alternative. The eSprinter, built for local deliveries (it achieved 140 miles of driving on our 75-mph highway range test), is speed-limited to 75 mph. Getting there, even while the van is void of any payload, requires patience and space. It consumed 11.8 seconds of our life to reach 60 mph, which is on par with the Ram 4500 HD Chassis Cab we tested in 2014. While the 201-hp eSprinter lends itself more to freight than to fast, we can say that it's highly unlikely we'll test anything for the remainder of 2025 that completes a quarter-mile in 19.0 seconds at 73 mph. There's simply not enough time. Price as tested: $95,672 (Base price: $73,6855) Powertrain: permanent-magnet synchronous AC rear motor, 201 hp, 295 lb-ft; 113-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, direct-drive transmission Weight: 7001 lb Tires: Michelin Agilis LTX F/R: LT245/75R-16 120/116Q MO-V READ THE FULL eSPRINTER TEST Michael Simari - Car and Driver 2025 BMW M5: 3.0 SecondsA "lightweight" M5 doesn't exist. Take, for example, the test car BMW sent us. It came equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and a carbon-fiber roof—good for a combined claimed weight savings of 121 pounds–yet it's still 1000 pounds heavier than the last-gen M5 Competition. Why? Power. A combined 717 horsepower, to be exact. It's now a plug-in hybrid combining a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 with a 15-kWh battery and motor in the transmission, which was effective at getting the new 5251-pound M5 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds. It's 0.4 second slower than the last-gen car we tested to 60 and 100 mph, but does end up closing the gap above 130 mph. Price as tested: $146,225 (Base price: $123,275) Powertrain: twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 32-valve 4.4-liter V-8, 577 hp, 553 lb-ft + AC motor, 194 hp, 207 lb-ft (combined output: 717 hp, 738 lb-ft; 15-kWh lithium-ion battery pack), 8-speed automatic transmission Weight: 5251 lb Tires: Hankook Ventus S1 Evo Z F: HL285/40ZR-20 (111Y) R: HL295/35ZR-21 (110Y) READ THE FULL M5 TEST Marc Urbano - Car and Driver 2024 Porsche Macan Turbo Electric: 2.9 SecondsNo, the 630-hp Macan Turbo Electric doesn't actually have turbos, but it does have oomph. Unfortunately—or fortunately—Porsche didn't call it the Macan Oomph Electric. The Macan Turbo Electric is mad quick. It takes just 2.9 seconds to dash to 60 mph. That's only a tenth slower than the last 992.1 GTS we've tested, and that 911 had two very real turbos. So maybe this whole "turbo" business is just a signature of speed rather than something so literal. Price as tested: $130,760 (Base price: $106,950) Powertrain: permanent-magnet AC front and rear motors (combined output: 630 hp, 833 lb-ft; 95-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack), direct-drive transmissions Weight: 5440 lb Tires: Pirelli P Zero Corsa Elect PZC4 F: 255/40R-22 103Y NEO R: 295/35R-22 108Y NEO READ THE FULL MACAN TURBO ELECTRIC TEST James Lipman - Car and Driver 2025 Bentley Continental GT Speed: 2.8 SecondsAnother story of old versus new, the Bentley Continental GT Speed absolutely roasts the acceleration performance of its former 650-hp twin-turbo W-12 powerplant. Similarly to the M5 mentioned earlier, the Bentley's new plug-in hybrid powertrain has made for a porky pig. This four-seater coupe weighs 5415 pounds, or 235 pounds shy of a Ford F-150 Tremor. However, the Continental GT Speed knows how to move what its momma gave it. Price as tested: $391,175 (Base price: $305,250) Powertrain: twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 32-valve 4.0-liter V-8, 591 hp, 590 lb-ft + AC motor, 188 hp, 332 lb-ft (combined output, 771 hp, 738 lb-ft; 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pack); 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission Weight: 5415 lb Tires: Pirelli P Zero Elect F: 275/35ZR-22 (104Y) PNCS BH R: 315/20ZR-22 (107Y) PNCS BH READ THE FULL CONTINENTAL GT SPEED TEST Michael Simari - Car and Driver 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS: 2.8 SecondsA fun fact about the 493-hp 718 Spyder RS is that Porsche says you shouldn't drive above 124 mph with the soft top up, but says that it's good for 191 mph with it down. Yeah, and lose our Detroit Tigers hat? No thanks. The 718 Spyder RS screams at 99 dBA at wide-open throttle. The 9000-rpm redline and widely quick seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is a $211,090 prescription for living in the moment. You shouldn't look at your phone while driving any car, but you can't look at your phone while driving this one because no newsfeed elicits this much dopamine. Top up, or down, the 718 Spyder RS is a wickedly quick convertible. Price as tested: $211,090 (Base price: $163,650) Powertrain: DOHC 24-valve flat-6, 493 hp, 331 lb-ft; 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission Weight: 3167 lb Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 F: 245/35ZR-20 (95Y) R: 295/30ZR-20 (101Y) READ THE FULL 718 SPYDER RS TEST Marc Urbano - Car and Driver 2025 Rivian R1T Tri-Motor: 2.7 SecondsQUICKEST TRUCK TESTED IN 2025I just imagine what the board meetings of its competitors, where supercars are discussed, might sound like: "So, there's this truck, right?" It would likely begin. The 7005 pounds of bad news at the center of that explanation is none other than the all-electric Rivian R1T. The Tri-Motor packs 850 horsepower and 1103 pound-feet of torque. It reaches 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, crosses the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds at 123 mph, and it does all of this wearing tires with a three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. I promise, I'm not making this up. The R1T's tires are 275/65R-20s, some three extra inches of sidewall versus the 718 Spyder RS in the last slide, which was a tenth slower than this truck. Its skidpad numbers are predictably low, 0.79 g during our test, but dude, what a delightfully different entry on a list of fast rides. Price as tested: $101,700 (Base price: $110,150) Powertrain: Permanent-magnet synchronous AC front motor, permanent-magnet synchronous AC rear motor (combined output: 850 hp, 1103lb-ft, 140-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack; direct-drive transmissions) Weight: 7005 lb Tires: Pirelli Scorpion N All Terrain Plus F/R: 275/65R-20 116H TPSM RIV Elect READ THE FULL R1T TRI-MOTOR TEST Michael Simari - Car and Driver 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance: 2.6 SecondsYou don't see specs associated with speed like this very often: 210.1 inches long. 5877 pounds heavy. The rear seats have foldout trays, and one of them offers a folding leg rest. Meanwhile, the AMG S63 E Performance carries all of this around without breaking a sweat. It gets to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark at 129 mph in 10.8 seconds. The combination of its 603-hp twin-turbo V-8 and 188-hp rear motor produces 791 horsepower and 1055 pound-feet of torque. Perhaps lost on this collection of "quick" cars is its ability to return to a stop from 70 mph in just 161 feet. The GT63 S E Performance is among the quickest vehicles we've tested with four seats (at least so far in 2025) and, despite being a hybrid, uses its 5-kWh battery pack for raw power rather than optimal fuel efficiency. Need proof? The EPA estimates the GT63 S E Performance can travel one mile in EV-only mode. On the miles-per-hour front, it's an absolute champ. The GT63 S E Performance got to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, besting the nonhybrid 2021 AMG GT63 S we tested by two-tenths. But to enter this party requires quite the cover charge. The $6500 Manufaktur Signature Yellow paint option on our test car is but a drop in the bucket of its $216,410 as-tested price. Price as tested: $216,410 (Base price: $196,050) Powertrain: twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 32-valve 4.0-liter V-8, 630 hp, 664 lb-ft + AC motor, 201 hp, 236 lb-ft (combined output: 831 hp, 1032 lb-ft; 5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack); 9-speed automatic/2-speed automatic transmissions Weight: 5252 lb Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 F: 275/35ZR-21 (103Y) MO1 R: 315/30ZR-21 (108Y) MO1 READ THE FULL GT63 S E PERFORMANCE TEST Ezra Dyer - Car and Driver 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto: 2.2 SecondsNary a supercharger or turbocharger lies between your eardrums and the wail of the Lamborghini Revuelto's 6.5-liter V-12 that revs up to 9400 rpm. However, what lies between your toes and the road is another story. The Revuelto is all-wheel drive. Each front wheel is powered by its own AC motor, and another adds a little assistance to the rear wheels. Its modestly sized battery does allow for near-silent crawling, but the jig is up once the V-12 fires to life. Combined output is 1001 horsepower and 1044 pound-feet of torque. No, this isn't the car anyone immediately thinks about when the words "plug-in hybrid" are mentioned. Hearing one warms the soul, but driving it spikes your heart rate. Price as tested: $729,458 (Base price: $612,858) Powertrain: DOHC V-12, 814 hp, 535 lb-ft + 2 AC front motors, 147 hp, 254 lb-ft + 1 rear AC motor, 147 hp, 110 lb-ft (combined output: 1001 hp, 1044 lb-ft; lithium-ion battery pack); direct-drive/8-speed automatic transmissions Weight: 4290 lb Tires: Bridgestone Potenza Sport F: 265/35ZR-20 (99Y) L R: 345/30ZR-21 (111Y) L READ THE FULL REVUELTO TEST Greg Pajo - Car and Driver 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: 2.2 SecondsQUICKEST REAR-DRIVE CAR EVERIs this the best time to be a car enthusiast? You look at this list and tell me. The Corvette ZR1 is rear-wheel drive, with a sub-$180K starting price. Compared to the paragraph that is the $729K Lambo's powertrain information above, the ZR1 doesn't let speed complicate things. The recipe here is simple. Two ball-bearing turbos feed up to 26.1 psi of boost into a 5.5-liter V-8. And lots of Michelin tire. If you're brave enough, the Vette will take you up to 233 mph. The speeding ticket will put you in handcuffs. Thanks to a barrage of more horsepower and torque, the C8 ZR1 is 0.7 tenth quicker to 60 mph than the C7 ZR1, despite this mid-engine ship weighing 170 pounds more. The acceleration here isn't just unlike most every gas-powered car, it's the quickest rear-wheel-drive vehicle we've ever tested. And here sits the Chevy on a quickest car list, stuck between a Lamborghini and a Porsche for top honors. Price as tested: $205,265 (Base price: $178,195) Powertrain: twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC V-8, 1064 hp, 828 lb-ft; 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission Weight: 3831 lb Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R ZP F: 275/30ZR-20 (97Y) TPC R: 345/25ZR-21 (104Y) TPC READ THE FULL CORVETTE ZR1 TEST Michael Simari - Car and Driver 2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package: 1.9 SecondsBones crush, hearts break, but the rapid acceleration of the 2025 Taycan Turbo GT with the no-cost Weissach package is nothing short of brain-melting. It's one of three cars we've ever tested to reach 60 mph in under 2.0 seconds. The other speed demons were the heavier Taycan Turbo GT four-seater (tested last year) and the Lucid Air Sapphire (coming up in the next slide). To lose weight, Porsche nixed the Taycan Turbo GT's rear seats, driver's-side charge port, rear speakers, and floor mats. Unlike on the sports cars, this treatment has been used previously (911 GT2 and GT3 RS, the Cayman GT4 RS, and 918 Spyder). While both Turbo GT Taycans needed just 1.9 seconds to 60 mph, the Weissach's weight savings helped it on the 300-foot skidpad, where it achieved 1.11 g. Its acceleration to 60 mph, 9.2-second quarter-mile time, and lateral grip all outperform the last Tesla Model S Plaid we tested. The Porsche EVs matched the Air Sapphire's 60-mph time, but using the quarter-mile run as the tiebreaker here, ultimately falls to second place in a ridiculous battle of speed. Price as tested: $231,995 (Base price: $254,817) Powertrain: Permanent-magnet synchronous AC front motor, permanent-magnet synchronous AC rear motor (combined output: 1019 hp, 914 lb-ft, 97-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack; direct-drive/2-speed automatic transmission Weight: 4915 lb Tires: Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS Elect F: 265/35ZR-21 (101Y) NF0 R: 305/30ZR-21 (104Y) NF0 READ THE FULL TAYCAN TURBO GT TEST Michael Simari - Car and Driver Lucid Air Sapphire: 1.9 SecondsWhen the Taycan Turbo GT put down the quickest acceleration time this publication has recorded in some 70 years of testing automobiles, the team let out a collective "Wow, that was fast!" And then, in less than a week, we were saying that again, as the 1234-hp Lucid Air Sapphire matched the Taycan's 1.9-second blast to 60 mph, but began to pull away after 80 mph. How'd the Lucid pull this off? Two obvious factors are its 1430 pound-feet of torque and Sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS Elect rubber (a $2900 option). Accelerating from a stop in the 5333-pound Sapphire feels so mind-bending, one might mistake it for the warm-up routine for time travel. It takes the Sapphire 3.9 seconds to reach 100 mph. At 8.4 seconds, the car is already double the speed limit of most highways. It takes just 17.0 seconds for the Sapphire to reach 200 mph, just 7 mph short of its top speed. And with that, the all-electric 2025 Lucid Air Sapphire is the quickest car we've ever tested. Price as tested: $253,400 (Base price: $2250,500) Powertrain: Permanent-magnet AC front motor, permanent-magnet AC rear motor (combined output: 1234 hp, 1430 lb-ft, 118-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack; direct-drive transmission) Weight: 5333 lb Tires: Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS Elect F: 265/35ZR-20 (99Y) LM1 R: 295/30ZR-21 (102Y) LM1 READ THE FULL AIR SAPPHIRE TEST Michael Simari - Car and DriverYou Might Also Like Car and Driver’s 10 Best Cars through the Decades How to Buy or Lease a New Car Lightning Lap Legends: Chevrolet Camaro vs. Ford Mustang! Monterey Car Week is about far more than just the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It's a celebration of cars of all kinds, from old collector's cars owned by rich pricks to the latest hypercars owned by rich pricks. And while Car Week's traffic jams may be legendary, any time you get a bunch of rich jerks together, they're going to find ways to misbehave. Carmel-By-The-Sea's new interim police chief, however, is having none of it. When Car Week kicks off this year, the local cops plan to treat it as an "all hands on deck" situation, he told Monterey County Now. When I say "new interim police chief," I mean brand spankin' new. Carmel Interim Police Chief Todd Trayer took over the job on August 5, which, by my count, was only two days ago. Car Week, meanwhile, kicks off tomorrow. And since the people outside the cars might have money and lawyers on speed dial, just like the people inside the cars, Trayer has reportedly directed his department to do something rare and arguably un-American — do ever so slightly more than just paying lip service to pedestrian safety. The Carmel Police Department has brought back the speed bumps and barriers on Ocean Avenue that it used last year, but Trayer has also directed them to add bollards and change the traffic flow on some streets. The department also plans to increase the number of patrol vehicles and have more tow trucks on standby to tow away cars driven by irresponsible drivers. "We are repeating a similar pattern as last year with a few of my tweaks that I think will keep it safer for pedestrians," he told MCN. Read more: 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ Is All About Big Numbers Illegal Mods, TooThree Koenigseggs lined up in a Car Week parking lot - Brandon Woyshnis/Getty ImagesThese changes come following a community survey that was conducted last year, where many residents reportedly voiced their support for the barriers on Ocean Avenue and more aggressive traffic enforcement in general, but thought the city could do better in 2025. "They were somewhat effective at preventing and calming reckless driving in the business district," one resident wrote, while also complaining that too many drivers, including the "too noisy and reckless" supercar owners, still ignored stop signs and speed limits. Following complaints of reckless driving on Rio Road and Lighthouse Avenue, Trayer said he also plans to do what he can to keep the rich jerks under control. "We're going to have all hands on deck, with high visibility," he told the news outlet, while Monterey's Lt. Ethan Andrews promised a "massive [police] presence" in the city. Last year, the Monterey Police Department reportedly made 251 stops, issued 165 tickets, towed five cars and made 18 arrests. Most of those figures were lower than they were in 2023, except for the arrests, which jumped 80% year-over-year. Personally, I say those are rookie numbers, and they should be able to get those numbers up this year, but be sure to place your bets down in the comments on how many arrests we'll actually see. And while local law enforcement may mainly be focused on speeding, street racing and other forms of reckless driving, they also don't plan to let illegal car mods slide, either. "It's not a good time to come to Monterey if your vehicle has any illegal modifications," Andrews told MCN. He also said to expect a heavy presence outside the Lighthouse Avenue tunnel. "You'd think they'd figure it out. It's not a secret," he said. Want more like this? Join the Jalopnik newsletter to get the latest auto news sent straight to your inbox... The Inventory module enhances TableTrack by providing comprehensive inventory tracking and management capabilities. President Donald Trump is expected to take executive action Thursday to expand the type of admissions data given to the federal government from colleges and universities — a move aimed at boosting transparency regarding race-based admissions, a senior White House official said. In a presidential memorandum, Trump is directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to revamp a longtime US higher education database called the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, which conducts surveys reviewing trends in areas like tuition and fees, admissions considerations, enrollment and financial aid. The memorandum, the senior official said, instructs McMahon to “expand the scope of required reporting for institutions’ admissions data in order to provide adequate transparency” and to “increase accuracy checks” on that data. In June of 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that colleges and universities can no longer take race into consideration as a specific basis for granting admission, a landmark decision overturning long-standing precedent that has benefited Black and Latino students in higher education. But since that decision, the White House official said, there is not enough admissions data available from universities, raising “concerns about whether race is actually used in admissions decisions in practice.” The expanded data, the official said, is expected to verify that. It comes as Trump is more broadly pushing for policy changes at colleges and universities, including over Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives. The Trump administration has heralded multi-million-dollar deals in recent days with Brown University and Columbia University, and it remains engaged in a pair of lawsuits with Harvard University. As part of the deal with Columbia University, the school agreed to provide the federal government with admissions data showing “both rejected and admitted students broken down by race, color, grade point average, and performance on standardized tests.” Thursday’s executive action appears to codify that for all other institutions receiving federal funding. WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior FBI official who served as acting director in the first weeks of the Trump administration and resisted demands to turn over the names of agents who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, investigations is being forced out of the bureau, two people familiar with the matter said Thursday. The circumstances of Brian Driscoll’s ouster were not immediately clear, but his final day is Friday, said the people, who were not authorized to discuss the personnel move by name and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Additional ousters were possible. Spokespeople for the FBI declined to comment. The news comes amid a much broader personnel purge that has unfolded over the last several months under the leadership of current director FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Numerous senior officials including top agents in charge of big-city field offices have been pushed out of their jobs and some agents have been subjected to polygraph exams, moves that former officials say have roiled the workforce and contributed to angst. Driscoll, a veteran agent who worked international counterterrorism investigations in New York and had also commanded the bureau’s Hostage Rescue Team, had most recently served as acting director in charge of the Critical Incident Response Group, which deploys manpower and resources to crisis situations. Driscoll was named acting director in January to replace Christopher Wray and served in the position as Patel’s nomination was pending. He made headlines after he and Rob Kissane, the then-deputy director, resisted Trump administration demands for information about agents who participated in investigations into the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol. ■ ■ ■ View the full article
