View the full article
  4. Fewer Americans are opening a book for fun each day, with reading for pleasure in the United States down 40% over the past 20 years, a new study finds. Researchers from University College London and the University of Florida analyzed surveys from more than 230,000 Americans aged 15 and older between 2003 and 2023, tracking their daily reading habits. Results, published in the journal iScience on Wednesday, showed the share of people who picked up a book, magazine or e-reader every day dropped about 3% per year. Reading with children was also rare, the study found, with only 2% of adults reporting doing so on average every day. MORE: How phonics is making a comeback as millions of kids struggle to read However, those who did read spent more time doing so, averaging more than 90 minutes daily. "For me, one of the most important takeaways of this study is awareness of how little reading for children is happening," Jill Sonke, one of the study's lead authors as well as director of research initiatives and a research professor at the University of Florida Center for Arts in Medicine, told ABC News. "As a mother, reading to my children was a really important time for bonding as well as for relaxation and for stimulating my children's interest in reading and their imagination and creativity." Olga Pankova/STOCK PHOTO/Getty Images - PHOTO: Stock photo of a woman reading a book. The study also found that reading declined more sharply among Black Americans, those with less education or lower incomes, and people in rural areas, with gaps widening over the 20-year study period. The researchers speculated that the drop is likely tied to the rise of digital media, including social platforms, streaming and online browsing. "There's a correlation between time spent on digital media and reductions in reading time," Sonke said. "It does seem logical that the ways in which digital media compete for our time would be a factor in these declines in reading." The auhtors cautioned that less reading could affect health, well-being and literacy. Reading has been linked to stronger language skills, reasoning and empathy, they said. "I think it's important for people to understand that reading for pleasure is actually a health promoting activity," Sonke said. "We know that participating in the arts is a health behavior because it statistically results in improved health outcomes including well-being, social cohesion, mental health." MORE: Many students have still not regained pandemic-era losses in reading, math: Report The study authors say that national strategies often focus mainly on children. The authors suggested that adult reading habits also deserve attention, especially given their impact on health and well-being. The National Literacy Trust, an independent charity based in London that promotes literacy, advises setting aside 10 minutes before bed, carrying a book or e-reader during commutes and making reading a shared family activity. Even small changes can help bring reading back into daily life, the group notes. 5. "Analog" has become a term of high praise in recent years. That's long been true for high-end watches, where the best mechanical actions manage 99 percent of the accuracy of a $10 digital Casio for hundreds of times the cost. But it is also the case for performance cars, where analog is shorthand for a natural dynamic feeling. Even if, as is often the way, this is delivered by numerous high-tech active systems working in the background. But the Dallara Stradale is pure analog. This is not a car that synthesizes anything, just one that delivers high-fidelity feedback at all times. Despite having license plates, this ultra-light Italian sports car looks like a racer and matches that with a power-to-weight closer to competition than street legality: 395 hp propelling a claimed 1900 pounds without fluids in its lightest configuration. Lorenzo MorandiThis may sound familiar, because the Stradale isn't new. It was launched back in 2018, and Road & Track drove it for the first time in 2020, when we lavished it in praise. Dallara is the world's leading manufacturer of race-car chassis and components; it also builds the core carbon structure of Bugatti road cars. But although hundreds of Dallara products compete every weekend, the company had never built a car under its own branding until the Stradale. It was commissioned by company founder Giampaolo Dallara to celebrate his 80th birthday, the original plan being to build 600 over a five-year production run. Signore Dallara is now 88—and still at his office at the company’s Varano de' Melegari HQ every day—but Stradale production has yet to stop. The company says it has now built over 350 cars, admitting that there is no chance of reaching its self-imposed limit before forthcoming European regulations end new sales. Sadly, the Stradale was never type-approved for use in the U.S., although some examples have apparently managed to find their way Stateside. When I visited Dallara's production facility, several new cars were in different stages of assembly, alongside a couple of earlier examples that had been returned for upgrades. Lorenzo MorandiThe Stradale has evolved over the years, but not a great deal so. As before, it has a carbon-fiber structure and is powered by a mid-mounted 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four Ford EcoBoost engine, heavily reworked here to deliver the headline power output. Two transmission choices are available, a six-speed manual or an automated single-clutch, both driving the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential. Mechanically, that's basically it: The Stradale has ABS and a fairly rudimentary traction control system, but no adaptive dampers or active dynamic systems. Buyers can choose between different body styles. The most minimalist of these—and the one that allows the headline weight figure—is a completely open, windshield-free barchetta. Above that is a spider, which adds a screen, air conditioning, and a soft-top cover. This can be upgraded further to a coupe with a Group C–style bubble roof featuring upward-hinged flaps, these being too small to be considered true doors; the roof bolts on, so it can be removed to turn the car back to a spider, although doing so is a two-person job. With rain throughout my test drive, I was happy that the factory's demonstrator was in coupe configuration. Lorenzo MorandiUpdates since the Stradale was launched include improved brake cooling; an upgraded fuel system to better cope with high, sustained lateral g-loadings; and the option of center-lock wheels. There are also new louvers set into the fenders above the front wheels, primarily for boosting downforce rather than cooling. Dallara engineers say the peak weight has risen to a maximum of 1885 pounds, 100 pounds more than the original car. The first challenge for any Stradale pilot is making an elegant entrance. Getting in requires negotiating the small access flaps in the roof while stepping over the tall, door-free sides of the car. Helpfully, Dallara has marked an untrimmed STEP HERE section in the center of the seats, but getting myself installed was still a clumsy process that was closer to falling than sliding. The driving position is low and tightly enclosed, and most controls are buttons on the face of the steering wheel. A small digital instrument pack relays speed, revs, and other basic information. The center console has temperature and fan controls, a traditional mechanical e-brake lever, and, for those who choose it, the lever for the manual transmission. The test car's cabin was beautifully trimmed, but practicality is limited and luggage space restricted to small compartments accessed by folding the seatbacks forward. Sadly, the car I drove had the automated gearbox, which was slightly slow to react as single-clutch transmissions tend to be. But in almost every other regard it was close to driving perfection. One of the key tests of any performance car is the rate at which a driver builds confidence in it, especially in challenging conditions. In Italy, I had an unfamiliar, twisting mountain road; rain and standing water; and a car riding on the optional track-biased Trofeo R tires. Yet the Stradale immediately felt both friendly and approachable, mechanical grip huge even at speeds that could only produce a small amount of the headline downforce peak. The Stradale was always keen to change direction, feeling as if it pivots pretty much from the base of the driver's seat, but it never felt edgy or nervous despite the potency of its power-to-weight ratio. Ride quality felt exceptionally good over broken surfaces for something that rides so low, and despite pushing hard over frequently bumpy roads, I didn't ground it out once. Lorenzo MorandiThe unassisted steering felt a little alien at first, just because it is so rare to experience any modern car without power assistance. At low speeds it is heavy, and I soon relearned the lesson of letting the car start to move before putting in maneuvering inputs. Even at higher velocities the helm stayed weighty and with a strong self-centering effect. But it is also rich in feedback, the steering wheel lightening and tightening to report on road conditions and slip angles. The lack of slack or slop in steering and the speed of responses is integral to the faith the Stradale generates. It was easily placed on a tight-fitting road, and in the combination of pliancy and body control there was plentiful chassis magic evident even when using only a small part of the car's ultimate abilities. Dynamic development work was led by Loris Bicocchi, the engineer who has been described as Mr. Hypercar with his star-studded resume that also includes the Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg CCR, and Bugatti Veyron. Lorenzo MorandiOkay, as before the Stradale's engine feels less of an experiential highlight. Dallara execs say the choice of a turbocharged four was vital to deliver on the power and weight targets, but the EcoBoost’s character is a little at odds with the finesse of the handling. Throttle response is a little blunted by turbo lag low down, and although there is plenty of urge—and a bellowing soundtrack when the engine is extended—there is little joy to be found in revs. Peak power arrives at just 6200 rpm, and the limiter calls time only 300 rpm later. It feels like a powerplant better suited for a rally car than a circuit racer, the mightiness of the midrange torque helping deal with short straights and frequent corners. One area that has improved since I first drove the Stradale is brake-pedal feel, which is now firmer and easier to modulate at higher loads. Road use didn't give any chance to test resistance to fade, but Dallara says many owners regularly track their cars on the cast-iron brakes without complaint. Lightness is always a virtue in sports cars. Lorenzo MorandiBeyond the fact that it will be a little rarer than intended, the Stradale's exclusivity was always going to be assured by a price tag that puts it in contention with some very impressive rivals. When it came out the base price was $183,000 with then-current exchange rates—just shy of the price of a Porsche 911 Turbo S in the U.S. at that time. Over the years the sticker has crept up, and exchange rates have also moved. A bare-bones barchetta is now $223,000 before taxes in Europe, and a fully loaded coupe in a snazzy color and with adjustable suspension and center-lock wheels can take that to nearly $300,000. That's big money for a car with a Ford four-banger and no doors, but perhaps not outrageous for a hand-built special carrying one of the most famous names in motorsport. It is no coincidence that there is something Lotus-like about the Stradale. That's Lotus-like as in the cars that made the British outfit famous, not the two-ton electric SUVs it has diversified into. Giampaolo Dallara started his career working for both Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini, developing the Miura at the age of just 27. But he admits that his inspiration as a young engineer came from Lotus founder Colin Chapman. Both Dallara the man and Dallara the company have built success by doing more with less, the same philosophy that always drove his hero. The Stradale is a perfect example of that, also an exemplar of the thrills a well-sorted sports car can deliver with a minimum of technical assistance. The rising tide of regulation will soon make it impossibly hard to produce street-legal cars this pure and uncompromising. Sure, we'll still have synthesized analog, but the Dallara is a reminder that analog analog is always better. 6. The College Football Playoff says it’s making some changes to the way it evaluates teams during the 2025 college football season. The playoff announced Wednesday that it was making “enhancements to the tools that the selection committee uses to assess schedule strength and how teams perform against their schedule. The changes come after 9-3 Alabama was the first team left out of the playoff and ended the season ranked ahead of 10-2 Miami. “The current schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents,” the playoff’s release said. “An additional metric, record strength, has been added to the selection committee’s analysis to go beyond a team’s schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.” Based on the paragraph above, we’re not sure if the playoff committee would have changed the way it ranked anyone in the top 15 a year ago. Though the Crimson Tide beat Georgia, Missouri and LSU, two of its losses were to teams that finished the regular season at 6-6. Alabama’s third loss came by 21 points to Oklahoma in the penultimate week of the season. Miami, meanwhile, lost on the road to a 7-5 Georgia Tech team and a 9-3 Syracuse team. The Hurricanes didn’t have any wins over teams who were ranked at the time of those games, though Louisville and Duke finished the season at 9-4. The CFP also said that it wouldn’t make a rule prohibiting teams’ rankings from changing ahead of the final set of rankings if those teams are not playing on conference championship weekend. “The selection committee reaffirmed that movement in the final week should be evidence-based and did not recommend creating a formal policy prohibiting such movement,” the playoff said. The first set of playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 4 and there will be five sets of rankings before the final rankings that set the playoff field will be released on Sunday, Dec. 7. The top four teams in the 12-team playoff will again get byes this season, though the top four teams will be the top four teams in the rankings, and not the four highest-ranked conference champions. 7. Every year in fantasy football, wide receivers get reshuffled by the situations around them. A change at quarterback, a new play-caller or a different role can turn steady producers into fantasy difference-makers overnight. We have a group of wideouts with a shift in their 2025 environments that sets them up for expanded upside. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] George Pickens moves from one of the worst passing situations in the league to Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. Calvin Ridley now has a No. 1 overall pick at quarterback in Cam Ward. Jakobi Meyers gets Geno Smith and Chip Kelly to drive efficiency. And in Kansas City, an offense that has lacked true explosiveness since Tyreek Hill finally found its spark in Xavier Worthy. Let's go deep on each of these changes. Dallas Cowboys: George PickensGeorge Pickens has already proven he can ball, notching a 1,000-yard season in 2023, but the situation around him has been rough. Last year’s offensive environment in Pittsburgh was flat-out brutal with bottom-tier efficiency, poor quarterback play and a catchable target rate that ranked outside the top 70. He still pulled in 59 catches for 900 yards and three scores, but his fantasy output of 11.7 points per game sat at WR35 when his opportunity and air yards profile suggested much more. Now everything changes. Pickens joins Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys, easily the best quarterback situation of his career. Dallas has been searching for a true No. 2 behind CeeDee Lamb, and Pickens’ skill set makes him the perfect fit. The reception heat map shows it clearly — Lamb wins all over the formation while Pickens thrives as a vertical outside threat. They are going to complement each other perfectly. The synergy with Dak is undeniable. From 2022 through 2024, Prescott’s most successful throws came on hitch routes, out routes and go balls. Pickens’ top routes last season? Go, hitch and out. That is not just overlap, that is alignment. You are pairing one of the league’s most accurate quarterbacks on those concepts with a wideout who wins on the exact same routes. The usage data is where it gets exciting. Pickens posted a Trinity Score — which blends target share, air yard share, first downs, yards per route run and more into one metric that shows how much a player truly matters in an offense (you can learn more about this metric on DD Fantasy Football) — of 7.77 with an efficiency-adjusted mark of 7.26. For 2025, that projects a fantasy range of outcomes from 13.6 points per game on the low end to 18.6 on the high end with a median of 15.6. That kind of usage lines up with recent seasons from Davante Adams in 2023, Terry McLaurin in 2022 and even ceiling years from Deebo Samuel Sr. in 2021, Tyreek Hill in 2020 and Ja’Marr Chase in 2021. The problem has never been Pickens, it has been everything around him. Now, with Prescott elevating the unit and defenses forced to pick their poison between Lamb and Pickens, this is a massive situation upgrade. If he stays healthy, 2025 could be the breakout year we have been waiting for. Pickens has always had the talent but now he finally has the quarterback and offensive ecosystem to put it all together. Do not be surprised if he posts the best numbers of his career in Dallas. Kansas City Chiefs: Xavier WorthyXavier Worthy started his rookie year slow but he flipped the script when it mattered most. From Week 12 through Kansas City’s playoff run the offense looked completely different with him as the spark. His postseason was a statement with eight catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the Super Bowl and another six for 85 yards and a score in the AFC Championship Game. The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t hoist the Lombardi but let’s be real — they don’t even get there without Worthy. That’s not role player production, that's No. 1 option work. Kansas City has been searching for its next Tyreek Hill and Worthy has the wheels to fill that void. At over 22 MPH he is the fastest man in the league and Andy Reid’s offense unlocked it down the stretch. If that postseason heater becomes the norm we are talking Pro Bowl upside in just his second season. The usage data tells the story. Worthy’s Trinity Score for the 2025 season projects a range of outcomes from 10.8 points per game on the low end to 17.5 points per game on the high end with a median of 13.5. That level of involvement matches the recent usage seasons of Terry McLaurin in 2024, Amon-Ra St. Brown in 2024 and Deebo Samuel Sr. in 2023. Both Rashee Rice and Worthy are going to be major pieces of this passing game, but with Rice staring down a suspension, don’t be shocked if we see Worthy take that second-year leap and cement himself as one of the engines of this offense. Tennessee Titans: Calvin RidleyCalvin Ridley put up another 1,000-yard season in 2024 but he did it in an offense with shaky quarterback play and no real target competition. Defenses keyed in on him and he still won. Reception Perception charted him with a 73.2% success rate vs man, 79.4% vs zone and 78.5% vs press, ranking in the 85th percentile. That’s elite separation no matter how you slice it and a reminder that Ridley can still beat coverage at a high level. The usage numbers tell the same story. Ridley posted a 6.62 Trinity Score with an efficiency-adjusted mark of 6.61. That level of involvement projects to 10.7 points per game on the low end, 13.6 in the median range and 15.4 on the high end. Those usage comps line up with players like Brandon Aiyuk in 2020 and 2022 and Mike Evans in 2021. In other words, even in a rough offensive environment, Ridley operated like a WR2 by usage and efficiency. Now the Titans bring in Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick, and this is the quarterback upgrade that can unlock Ridley again. Ward’s profile at Miami showed one of the highest explosive-play rates in the country with over nine yards per attempt and a 67.8% completion rate. Several of Ridley’s best routes — digs, slants and curls — match perfectly with Ward’s strengths as a passer. That is a natural connection waiting to happen. Ridley is not going to be the sexiest pick on draft day but the separation metrics and Trinity data both show he still has every tool to deliver. Add in a quarterback who can actually capitalize and you’ve got a veteran wideout with a real shot to climb into the top-15 in 2025. Las Vegas Raiders: Jakobi MeyersJakobi Meyers has quietly been one of the most reliable receivers in football but he’s dealt with a carousel of quarterbacks. Enter Geno Smith. Paired with Chip Kelly’s aggressive downfield system, Meyers is set up for a career-best efficiency season even if his raw targets dip. The Raiders are betting on Smith to finally fix their revolving door at quarterback and there’s reason for optimism. Since 2022, he ranks fourth in the league in completion percentage (68.5%) and passing yards (12,226) while tossing 73 touchdowns in that span. Smith has already proven in Seattle that he can elevate the talent around him and now he gets to work with one of the NFL’s steadiest pass catchers. Meyers has been nothing but dependable in Silver and Black, recording 158 receptions for 1,834 yards and 12 touchdowns in 31 games. His sure hands (just a 1.3% drop rate) and his first 1,000-yard season in 2024 highlight how consistent he’s been despite chaos under center. Even better, his fantasy scoring has climbed every year — 12.9 points per game in 2022 (WR29), 13.7 in 2023 (WR24) and 14.5 last season (WR20). That steady progression speaks to his reliability and, with Geno now under center, he’s set up to crack the top 20 range or higher. Make no mistake, Brock Bowers is the focal point of this passing game. But Meyers is right behind him in the pecking order and with rookie Ashton Jeanty bringing balance to the ground game, efficiency could push Meyers even higher in 2025. He’s shaping up as one of the safest bets to smash his ADP and give you weekly production you can bank on. The Final WordThese receivers are not new names. They are proven talents stepping into situations that can finally showcase what they do best. Pickens with Prescott. Ridley with Ward. Meyers with Geno. Worthy bringing back the explosive plays Kansas City has been missing. You do not win leagues by chasing boring floor plays. You win by targeting the wideouts whose environments are about to fuel a breakout. If you want upside that can swing 2025 in your favor, these are the wideouts to plant your flag on. 8. View the full article
  16. There’s no greater feeling than watching a movie with a vindication plot reach its resolution. The “Us vs. the World” vibe sets in from the beginning. It almost feels personal. As if nobody believes you despite the “clear” facts displayed on your screen. Will Smith has played the part well over his career. From Enemy of the State to I, Robot, we’re almost rooting for something to happen, forcing more people to share our conviction. Some of our favorite draft picks require the same level of fortitude. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] We’ve been following the news all offseason. Everyone’s seeing the same training camp clips. And yet, you’re on an island. Your thoughts get dismissed. However, when it comes to these three players, you could make the case that if you’re right, you’ve found the players that will help you win a fantasy football championship. Christian McCaffrey (Yahoo ADP: 8.8)Everybody knew what was coming as soon as Christian McCaffrey exited Week 13 in the second quarter. First, it was bilateral Achilles tendinitis. McCaffrey rug-pulled fantasy managers by missing Week 1 despite insisting he’d have played just a few weeks prior. He then proceeded to burn a hole in fantasy rosters until his return in Week 10. And even in his three full games, McCaffrey didn’t beat the “still injured or too old” allegations. Forced Missed Tackle Rate: 4.7% (2024), 18.1% (2022 and 2023) Rushing Success Rate: 37.2%, 50.1% Yards after the Catch per Reception: 5.8, 7.2 No 100-yard games (unless you count all-purpose). No touchdowns. Another injury. And McCaffrey turned 29 over the summer. I can see why drafters with a mid-to-late first-round pick might hesitate. I’ve seen enough clues to keep me clicking his name at the 1.08. To be clear, my confidence doesn’t come from him making a catch against a backup defender in camp. I mean, yes, it’s cool. The beat the 49ers’ social team tossed on it is dope, too. But it’s the depth. Air Yards per Target: 4.1 (2024), 1.9 (2022 and 2023) Catch Rate: 81.3%, 80.4% Yards per Route Run: 1.55, 1.56 HC Kyle Shanahan has deployed McCaffrey like a WR to force defenses to account for another pass-catcher downfield. Coincidentally, McCaffrey’s receiving aDOT was at its peak in ’24. While still earning nearly 20.0% of the targets (18.2%), the “old” RB was operating as a primary option for Brock Purdy. And, relative to his past time in San Francisco, he was playing up to his standard. Now, let’s spin this into what’s coming in 2025. Ricky Pearsall is the only healthy WR. RBs with fourth and fifth-round draft capital flank McCaffrey in the backfield. In other words, his path to opportunity as a rusher and receiver is clear. Plus, since San Francisco opted to wait until Day 3 to address their running game, I’m willing to bet on McCaffrey’s health (and his potential to be a top-3 fantasy asset) versus letting him slip by in drafts. Zay Flowers (Yahoo ADP: 61.9)Let me guess. You’re coming up on the 5/6 turn, and this glut of receivers is staring you in the face. DJ Moore, 58.5 (ADP) Courtland Sutton, 60.9 Zay Flowers, 61.8 Xavier Worthy, 62.8 George Pickens, 64.3 The mental gymnastics to push Flowers down are effortless (incorrect, but simple). Moore and Sutton are WR1s on their teams. Worthy and Pickens have the talent and situation to generate explosive plays. Meanwhile, Flowers is the third attraction of the Lamar Jackson show, featuring Derrick Henry. But then again, if I look at the Ravens’ “de facto” WR1, there are enough traits (and metrics) to justify his case for the role. Two key takeaways here are volume and variance. Not only did Jackson look to Flowers 112 times last season (the most of any Baltimore pass-catcher), but it was all over the field. The second-year receiver hit a career high in slot snaps (38.0%) while bumping his receiving aDOT up to an average of 10.7 yards. OC Todd Monken was (and still is) looking for creative ways to get the ball in Flowers’ hands. However, we can’t solely look at Flowers’s opportunity relative to his teammates. We already know he’s the top option. But when we compare his workload to those same four receivers drafted around him, the value starts to shine. Target Share: 25.4%, 2nd Targets per Route Run: 1st Yards per Route Run: 1st But I get it. You want explosive plays, too. Well, Sutton (21.9% explosive play rate) was the only WR out of that group with a higher rate of downfield catches (21.6%). We need receivers who have a genuine connection with their QB. Nobody earned more targets when their QB was under duress than Flowers. We’ve already acknowledged Jackson is one of the best passers in the league. Accordingly, we should be valuing his WR1 the same way. Trevor Lawrence (Yahoo ADP: 129.9)There’s no other way to say it. After multiple letdowns each year, I wouldn’t want to draft Trevor Lawrence either. The only thing missing from Ian’s video is the music from “Yakety Sax.” Lawrence has been the poster child for the “It’s Always Something With This Person” campaign. He had to survive Urban Meyer as a rookie. Doug Pederson brought stability to the offense, but Jacksonville’s free-agent spending netted them Christian Kirk and Calvin Ridley, both of which have significant roles in the above compilation. Then, a shoulder injury knocked Lawrence out of the 2024 season. If it’s not Lawrence’s play, then his receivers are at fault. If the pass game isn’t clicking, it’s the scheme. We’d be mad at Meyer or Pederson, but we can’t draft them. Their names aren’t on my roster in the QB slot next to just 9.4 points (Lawrence’s Week 3 total). But after peeling back Lawrence’s peripherals and projecting how he’ll mesh with HC Liam Cohen, I’m looking at the Jaguars’ QB1 as my late-round target. 2022: 7.4 (air yards per attempt), +1.4% (completion percentage over expected) 2023: 8.2, +0.9% 2024: 9.3, -1.0% Completion percentage over expected (CPOE) is like grading passes on a curve. The farther downfield or toward the sideline, the higher the degree of difficulty. CPOE awards the passer for completing harder throws. But for Lawrence, his penchant for throwing intermediate or deep was (part of) his undoing. As his aDOT went up, his completion percentage dropped. However, if we look at Cohen’s last QB, it’s fair to project a shift in Lawrence’s style. While accruing the fourth-most dropbacks of any starter last year (651), Mayfield placed 66.7% of his passes in the short and intermediate area of the field. And this wasn’t an accident. Mayfield had a 9.0 passing aDOT the year prior. It was by design. If left untouched, only Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Kyler Murray averaged fewer air yards per attempt. So, let’s assume Lawrence relies on his receivers to do the heavy lifting. Luckily, both of his receivers have top-24 potential. Travis Hunter averaged 4.3 yards after the catch per reception in his final year at Colorado, which ranked third in his class. Brian Thomas Jr. posted top-six marks amongst veterans as a rookie. And the Jaguars face the Panthers in Week 1. At worst, you have a viable streamer for the season opener. But, if I’m right, you’ve got a top-12 QB on your squad at a discount price. 17. An AutoNation Mercedes dealer in Florida allegedly won’t pay a customer for a lemon car it sold, despite an order from an arbitrator. It’s a frustrating situation anyone could find themselves in and certainly feels like a miscarriage of justice. A woman smiles in her mugshot after she vandalized her ex’s car to the tune of $12,000. The woman originally purchased what was advertised as a certified pre-owned 2018 Mercedes E 400, and she was understandably excited, reports CBS News Miami. After all, that’s a nice car. But it came with a long list of headaches, leading the woman to question if it really went through the long inspection Mercedes-Benz requires for a vehicle to be sold as certified pre-owned. About six months after the purchase, the first indication the woman had that something was amiss came when one of the bumper covers fell off. It had been attached using only zip ties. The dealer fixed the problem free of charge. But not too long after, the E 400 started “running rough.” Suspecting the dealer wasn’t being honest, the woman took the luxury car to an independent Mercedes shop and that’s when she got hit by a truth bomb. The odometer was showing about 39,000 miles but a diagnostic indicated the true mileage was about 71,000 miles. When the woman went to get a second opinion, that mechanic said the vehicle wasn’t even safe to drive thanks to a damaged suspension. Odometer fraud is a federal offense, and we wonder if this case has been referred to the authorities. It might not have been the dealership that dialed the odometer back, but we would think that should’ve been discovered in the pre-owned certification process. Eventually, the woman retained an attorney and the case went to arbitration. The arbitrator found in her favor, saying the AutoNation dealer violated the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. Even though the dealer appealed the decision with the American Arbitrator Association, it was denied. But the dealership hasn’t paid a dime of the $66,000-plus in damages ordered. The woman’s attorney says the dealer is dragging out the resolution, in the meantime waging a legal battle against her that’s costing more money. It sounds like a war of attrition, a way to wear down the other side even when you’ve already lost. We’d love to say this is shocking, but we’ve seen dealerships behave this way too many times in the past. 18. Toyota Finally Confirms Small Truck Maverick Rival — ‘Not If, But When’ originally appeared on Autoblog. Toyota's Small Pickup Truck Is In The PipelineToyota will launch a small pickup truck aimed at the likes of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick, replacing the Tacoma as the brand's new entry point to its pickup lineup. The small truck, which will fit in under the Tacoma, will be a smaller alternative brought to production just about as soon as Toyota can: "Decisions have been made," said Cooper Ericksen, Toyota Motor North America’s head of planning and strategy. Kristen BrownThe question is when we can slot it in. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ at this point. Cooper Ericksen, Toyota Motor North America, Head of Planning and Strategy Speaking to MotorTrend, Ericksen confirmed development of the as-yet-unnamed small truck. The automaker has watched the segment grow since the Maverick and the Santa Cruz debuted in 2021. Since then, the popularity of these small, affordable trucks has ballooned. Toyota told the outlet it estimates it could sell between 100,000 and 150,000 units annually in the US alone. Toyota Is Behind The Ball While Shoppers Think Small2025 Hyundai Santa CruzHyundaiToyota hesitated, and whether that was the right or wrong decision remains to be seen. However, the effect that decision is having today is pretty clear: Ford sold 131,142 Mavericks last year, and Hyundai cleared 32,033 Santa Cruz sales, while Toyota sat on the sidelines. The brand used to be a default for shoppers seeking a sensible, affordable small truck, but the Tacoma ballooned in size and price alongside other midsize competitors. It's easy to see why shoppers may be interested in smaller, more affordable cars. Even wealthy buyers are looking at more affordable cars as costs skyrocket amid tariff negotiations and supply chain disruptions. American buyers are seeking small, affordable cars with excellent tech, and while Toyota caters to that demand in other places, it has yet to offer something as small as the Maverick. Toyota Confirms Its Small Truck Will Be UnibodyToyota EPUToyota EuropeEricksen confirmed that Toyota's small truck will use unibody construction as opposed to the traditional body-on-frame construction used in many larger trucks. Hyundai also employs unibody construction in its Santa Cruz. The truck's frame consists of a single piece onto which body panels are placed, while a body-on-frame truck consists of a rolling chassis that is mated to a vehicle body. Toyota should offer a hybrid powertrain, like the Maverick, and we expect the truck will share some similarities with other small unibody Toyota products, like the RAV4 and Corolla. We're also looking to Toyota to cater to demands from the off-road crowd with some TRD-branded options in the lineup, in addition to an affordable base price. However, Toyota's late to the party on this one, so don't expect to see the small truck for another several years. 20. Multi-series champion Tony Stewart, who has wins in nearly every racing series in the US and who is the only racer with season titles in both NASCAR and IndyCar, said NHRA drag racing is an island unto itself. And he is right on so many levels. From a driver’s standpoint to a fan’s perspective, nothing else on Earth is like it. It’s a quick, fast, noisy, stinky, sometimes-confusing but always-amazing, sensory-overload experience. Funny Car champion Matt Hagan said he couldn’t get this kind of thrill anywhere else. The same goes for the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series fans. Here’s why: Racers Go So Fast They Use Parachutes to StopA Top Fuel dragster or Funny Car launches at about 5 gs, and a parachute deploys at a negative-5 gs to slow it to a stop from a pass of more than 300 mph. So it’s a frightening moment when a parachute fails to pop out (and a disheartening one when it drops out too early). Icon Sportswire - Getty Images Racers Enjoy Helping One Another, Even RivalsIt isn’t unusual for teams to share insight, parts or even a Funny Car body—even if the driver is the next-round opponent. And if a team is in a panic with a starting-line glitch, the opponent will wait, choosing not to take advantage so they can race fair and square. MediaNews Group/Inland Valley Daily Bulletin via Getty Images - Getty Images Drivers have Plenty of Time to Spend With FansWith just two or three rounds of less than four seconds in a car or on a motorcycle each day of a race weekend (okay, up to four rounds on a winning race day), drivers have plenty of time to spend with the fans and sneak in naps between sessions. If a driver won every single one of the 20 races on the schedule, he would race his car approximately only 320 minutes (5.3 hours) a year. The action isn’t continual. Teams service the car between rounds, and oftentimes drivers have their roles on the rebuilds Alexis DeJoria, for example, will fold and pack her own 'chutes during rebuild time. Some drivers might even turn a wrench, and several drivers will mix their own fuel. NHRA/National Dragster Sportsman Racers Don’t Always Have a Desire to Move to the Pro RanksThe camaraderie in the sportsman (non-professionals) class pits is remarkable. I'll guarantee you we don't. We're putting our lives on the line because we love doing it. We're not getting paid that much. "None of us does this for the money. 21. A 1924 Hispano-Suiza wins Pebble Beach; auction tents and concept debuts signal renewed momentum at Monterey Car Week.A 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo captured Best in Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, capping Monterey Car Week with a crowd-pleasing victory for a one-off prewar masterpiece. The boat-tailed “torpedo,” a staple of conversation across the show field, was often ringed by spectators angling for a closer look at its aeronautical lines and intricate metalwork. The Hispano-Suiza’s mahogany body panels, secured with exposed aluminum rivets, were restored over two years using period-appropriate wood and finishes. The revival extended under the hood, where nickel-plated components and other period-correct details underscore a faithful return to 1920s specification, according to an RM Sotheby’s spokesperson. Judges awarded the top honor amid a competitive field, reaffirming Pebble Beach’s status as the world’s most closely watched concours for craftsmanship, historical accuracy and presentation. The Concours capped a busy week in which auction tents and manufacturer showcases across the Monterey Peninsula drew heavy foot traffic. Bidders packed preview halls and evening sales, with auction houses reporting brisk interest in blue-chip prewar classics and rising demand for modern collectibles. The tone throughout the week suggested a healthier market than many feared earlier this year, with competitive paddles in the room and steady activity from phone and online participants. Automakers and boutique builders also used the venue to unveil fresh design studies and limited-series performance models, leaning into Monterey’s blend of heritage and cutting-edge technology. Concept cars and specials rolled out at venues such as The Quail and on the Concours lawn, offering glimpses of future design language alongside tributes to motorsport and marque anniversaries. Monterey Car Week has long served as a barometer for collector confidence and brand storytelling. This year’s headlines — a hand-built Hispano-Suiza restored to period correctness, crowded auction aisles and a slate of new concept reveals — suggested a sector eager to celebrate provenance while embracing innovation. With the Hispano-Suiza’s Best in Show win, the week closed on a note that blended both: meticulous restoration craft and the enduring pull of early motoring’s most ambitious designs. ⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious Sign up for the Motorious Newsletter. 22. Local authorities and beekeepers in Spain are on high alert after discovering the first case of the Oriental hornet on the Balearic Islands, the Majorca Daily Bulletin reported. What's happening?A series of traps set up to lure and reduce the population numbers of Asian hornets in the Binibona village of Mallorca, Spain, managed to trap an Oriental hornet. Although Oriental hornets were discovered in Valencia, Spain, more than a decade ago in 2012, this is the first recorded case of an Oriental hornet on the Balearic Islands. This discovery indicates a rapid expansion of the invasive species eastward in the country, which is troubling news for local honey bee colonies. Beekeepers and conservationists are especially concerned about the detection of the Oriental hornet in this region, as it signals the successful expansion of this invasive species into new territory. "It's most likely that, like most invasive insects, it arrived via maritime cargo transport," the Government's Species Protection Service explained, per the Majorca Daily Bulletin. Compared to Asian hornets, which are also an invasive species, Oriental hornets are larger wasps that target honey bees but will, in some cases, harm humans. Due to their larger size and subsequent increased venom dose, Oriental hornets can inflict greater damage on their prey, depositing enough venom to increase the risk of anaphylactic shock. Why is the spread of invasive species important?Invasive species like the Oriental hornet have detrimental effects on local ecosystems. Due to a lack of natural predators in their new environment, invasive species tend to multiply at an aggressive rate, outcompeting native species for vital resources, including food, light, and water. This rapid growth can push out native species and lead to biodiversity loss, which throws entire ecosystems out of balance. Since Oriental hornets target honey bee colonies due to their rich source of food, it can lead to a decline in population of these important pollinators, which are crucial to maintaining ecosystem balance and help secure the human food supply, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. What can I do to help? One way to limit and prevent the spread of invasive species is to prioritize and support the growth and well-being of native plants, animals, and habitats. By strengthening an ecosystem's natural components, it can more effectively fight off attempts by invasive species to enter new territories, as well as prevent the spread of harmful diseases. You can help stop the spread of invasive species like the Oriental hornet by learning about these animals and how to identify them in the wild. Conservation organizations and local authorities depend on the aid of an engaged community to identify emerging cases and better target conservation efforts. 23.
