  1. Michael Phelps caught plenty of attention for criticizing USA Swimming in a post during the 2025 World Championships. On Wednesday, Phelps went into greater detail on his critiques in a lengthy post on Instagram. The post called out USA Swimming for a decline in performance over the past couple years and detailed a number of issues Phelps sees within the program. Before getting into all of that, though, Phelps started the post by clarifying that his criticisms are targeted at the leadership within USA Swimming, and not its athletes. From there, Phelps laid out his issues with USA Swimming. He started by calling out the team's decline in performance, stating that Team USA won just 44 percent of the medals they competed for in the 2024 Paris Olympics. That was the lowest total the U.S. saw in the sport since 1988. He then accused USA Swimming of poor leadership, saying that trickles down and affects the athletes involved with the organization. Phelps said he sent a letter to USA Swimming earlier this year, but it "seemed to fall on deaf ears." While Phelps said money was a factor in USA Swimming's decline, he called "poor operational controls and weak leadership" the "cornerstone of the sport's problems." Phelps explained that he believes athletes are no longer getting the necessary support necessary to compete at the highest level. He called out the sport's declining participation numbers, and said he would be hesitant to allow his sons to compete in swimming. Phelps then explained that he wants to be part of the solution for USA Swimming. He urged others to weigh in with their thoughts before listing out three recommendations for the organization. Those recommendations included USA Swimming holding an independent review into the organization as a whole, creating an athlete-first methodology to adequately support swimmers and focusing on strengthening the sport at the grassroots level. Phelps offered up his services and vowed to be a resource for USA Swimming at the end of the post, saying "My door is open and there is work to be done." Phelps' post comes just weeks after he shared a critical post from former teammate — and Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte. In that post, Lochte sent out an image in which a funeral was being held for USA Swimming. Phelps asked if the 2025 World Championships would be a "wake-up call" for USA Swimming. Phelps knows a thing or two about the sport. He's widely considered one of the best swimmers — and one of the best Olympians — of all time. Phelps won a record 23 gold medals over his Olympics career. Team USA recovered from a slow start at the 2025 World Championships. The team finished with nine gold medals in swimming at the event, which led all countries. It also finished with 29 total medals, which was also ranked first. Despite the team's success, it's clear Phelps believes more work needs to be done. And he's willing to be a part of that solution. View the full article
6. LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A judge sentenced a Caledonia woman, Sandra Baxter, to 20 hours of community service and a fine of $2,500 for providing a false statement during the Unlock Michigan campaign finance investigation. Caledonia is located southeast of Grand Rapids. In May 2021, retired Michigan Chamber of Commerce officer Robert LaBrant filed a complaint with the Michigan Department of State’s office that alleges a “dark money scheme” to use a nonprofit to fund a ballot initiative. Fundraising consultant pleads guilty in Unlock Michigan scandal Baxter was a fundraising consultant who solicited funds for Michigan! My Michigan! and, in March, she admitted in court that she knowingly and willfully made a misleading statement during a criminal investigation. 7. NORTH CAROLINA (WGHP) — It’s almost become a tradition: Every summer, the business analysts at CNBC rank all 50 states on which are the best for businesses, and each time, lately, North Carolina comes out on top. Well, on top or very close. In three of the last five years, North Carolina was named #1 for businesses and in the other two, they were runners up – a streak no other state can match. Guilford County Schools helps get students ‘future ready’ Ask John Loyack, the North Carolina Community College’s Vice President of Economic Development, if he’s surprised by that and he’ll tell you, “Absolutely not,” says Loyack. “I think every year when we look at states all across the nation and see where they rank in terms of economic development, I’m always certain we’ll see North Carolina somewhere towards the top, regardless of what types of business we’re talking about. You could look at something like small business as an example: in May, we saw the largest number of new business startups in the state for years and years and years. And so this is a good place to do business, whether you’re starting a small coffee shop or whether you’re looking for 15,000 engineers to work at a major aerospace manufacturing facility.” The state’s 58 community colleges have the widest charge of any of the higher education schools. Their number one product is still preparing students for a four-year university – most community college students get automatic admission to one of North Carolina’s 4-year schools with certain prerequisites. But close behind that is building programs that can be adapted for the training of people in any industry or for any company. “We have to support everything that supports the business outside of (a business’s) facility as well,” says Loyack. “And so we’re the ones who are providing the teachers of tomorrow, the nurses of tomorrow, the EMTs, construction workers, in addition to all the highly trained engineers who may be getting their degrees at a four-year institution, but they’re coming back to Community College for continuing education opportunities as well.” North Carolina teacher bonuses for those with master’s degrees could be reinstated And they do it at about half the cost of the traditional universities, which can be vital. “Most students stop their studies at Community College, not because of the academics, because they run into nonacademic issues: their car breaks down, they lose their housing; they have food insecurity, I mean, and those are big societal challenges but we’re on the front edge of that,” says Tony Clarke, the president of Guilford Technical Community College. Loyack points out that the word “community” may be the most important one in their name because, unlike campuses such as UNC Chapel Hill, which draw students from across the country and even the world, “The students go to community colleges, 80% of them going to stay in their communities. So we’re supporting the needs of the communities all across the state of North Carolina in the way that the universities are just not designed to do,” says Loyack. Many people, though, still see community colleges as the only place to prepare a young person for a lucrative trade and GTCC’s Tony Clarke says North Carolina’s community college system still excels at that. “I’ve just seen apprenticeship continue to grow and grow and leveraging that to serve employers and make sure they get the workforce that they need. I think we do that probably better than any other state,” says Clarke. See more on this in this edition of The Buckley Report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 8. If you've ever been stopped at a particularly long red light, you've probably felt it was okay to check your phone while you're stopped. In several U.S. states, it's actually illegal to use a handheld cellphone when stopped at a red light. States with such prohibitions include California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon and Pennsylvania, among others. Can I use my phone while stopped at a red light in Louisiana? What to knowIn Louisiana, it was generally legal to use your phone while stopped at a red light, however, it is illegal to hold your phone while driving. A new law that took effect Aug. 1, 2025, requires that drivers use their phones hands-free while operating a vehicle, meaning drivers can use features like Bluetooth or dash-mounted device. Although, drivers can hold and use phones when "lawfully stationary," meaning that a motor vehicle is stopped, in park or neutral, standing while in gear and not moving, as well as in a travel lane or on the shoulder of a public road or highway, according to BillTrack50. This also includes instances where the action is necessary to observe or avoid conflict with traffic or in compliance with the directions of law enforcement or a traffic control device or signal, says BillTrack50. Bristol Township is the latest Bucks County municipality to add an automatic red light camera programThere are exceptions for emergencies, like calling 911, and for first responders using their devices as part of their duties. Additionally, until Jan. 1, 2026, officers will only issue warnings for violations of the new law, with fines starting on that date. 9. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The first black bear hunt in Florida in a decade will take place in December under a rule adopted Wednesday by state wildlife officials despite strong opposition to the eventual use of dogs and targeting the animals in baited locations. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted unanimously in favor of the plan during a meeting that drew 168 people for a public hearing in the Panhandle town of Havana, with both supporters and opposents present. The panel had given preliminary approval in May, citing a need to manage growing bear populations. “We make decisions based on science," said commission chair Rodney Barreto. Opponents called the hunt cruel, unnecessary and an excuse for hunters to bag a trophy animal when the real issue is the encroaching human population in bear habitat as Florida continues to grow. “Not all the hunters support this hunt. We’d like to see nature in balance," said Lauren Jorgensen, whose family owns a ranch in rural Suwannee County. There are an estimated 4,000 black bears in Florida, one of the few states with sizable populations that do not have a bear hunting season. Several pro-hunt speakers noted that bears are much more commonly seen in many areas than in the past, causing interactions with humans that provoke fear and concern. Ottice Amison, a member of the Franklin County Commission, said residents there report bears on porches, rooting through garbage cans, roaming neighborhoods and playgrounds. “The reality is that the frequency and severity of bear interactions continues to rise," Amison told the wildlife commission. “Right now, too many of our residents see bears as threats and pests.” There has been only one documented fatal black bear attack in Florida, the May mauling of 89-year-old Robert Markel and his daughter's dog in a rural part of Collier County, in southwest Florida. The plan adopted Wednesday has more stringent rules than the previous Florida hunt in 2015, in which hunting permits were provided to anyone who could pay for them. That led to a chaotic event shut down days early after 300-plus bears were killed, including at least 38 females with cubs, meaning the young bears probably died too. Hunt opponents predict this year will be more of the same. “This decision reflects political pressure, not ecological necessity or public will,” said Susannah Randolph, director of the Sierra Club Florida chapter. Under the new rule, there would be a random drawing of permits with a limit of 187. Hunters could kill only one bear each and only in certain parts of Florida where the bear population is large enough. There would be no killing of cubs and none of females with cubs, according to the FWC staff. A permit would cost $100 for Florida residents and $300 for nonresidents. For 2025, the plan is to hold the hunt from Dec. 6 to Dec. 28. In the future, the FWC foresees a bear hunt between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, subject to more studies about the effect of hunting and the population of the animals. In future years, hunters could use up to six dogs each to pursue bears. Private landowners with 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) or more could hold what the FWC calls a “bear harvest program” on their property under the proposal. Bears could be hunted at bait feeding stations on private property. Also, bowhunting will be allowed under rules similar to those for deer. View the full article
  10. NEED TO KNOWA Utah man claims her suffered "permanent disfigurement" after a rollercoaster collision in 2023 According to a recently filed amended complaint, Steven Thorpe alleges a test vehicle on Lagoon amusement park's Primordial coaster struck his scissor lift, catapulting him through the air In their answer to the initial complaint, the defendants denied nearly every allegation A Utah man is claiming he suffered “permanent disfigurement” as a result of a roller coaster collision. According to an amended complaint filed on Aug. 8 against several defendants, a man named Steven Thorpe "suffered extensive injuries” after a roller coaster struck the scissor lift he was working on top of. The incident allegedly occurred on the popular Primordial coaster at the Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington, Utah in August 2023. The ride was still under construction at the time. Thorpe, an HVAC technician, was working in the Primordial ride building for a few days prior to the incident. The amended complaint claims that on Aug. 9, 2023, Thorpe was tasked with troubleshooting some issues with the air system. Lagoon personnel informed him they would be testing the ride at some point during the day, but in the amended complaint, the technician claims he was never given an exact time of day. ABC4 Utah/YouTube Primordial rollercoaster entrance at Lagoon Amusement Park in Utahhttps://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cuf According to the amended complaint, to access the air registers, Thorpe was positioned atop a raised scissor lift — a mobile, motorized scaffold often used in construction. While in an elevated position on the first floor of the building, the lights suddenly turned off and a test vehicle came down the track. According to Thorpe, he was unable to lower the lift in time to get off it and out of the way. “The test vehicle struck the scissor lift causing it to tip over,” the amended complaint claims. “[Thorpe] was catapulted out of the scissor lift when it was approximately 19-20 feet up and landed on the ground.” Thorpe accuses all the named defendants, including the Lagoon Corporation, its parent company, and Actemium (an engineering company) of "negligence," the result of which he says he has caused him to incur medical expenses and lost wages. He also claims the accident left him with "permanent disfigurement." Judson Burton, an attorney representing Thorpe, spoke to local news out ABC 4 about the ongoing litigation. “He was taken from Lagoon to McKay-Dee Hospital and he stayed there for approximately a month and had multiple surgeries during that time,” Burton said. He added: “This accident was fully preventable.” Thorpe’s attorneys did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Attorneys for the Lagoon Corporation responded to the initial complaint, filed back in August 2024. They denied nearly all of Thorpe’s allegations and claimed the technician “was explicitly instructed on the timing of the testing.” “[Thorpe] was permitted on the first level [of the ride] on a limited basis with specific warnings and restrictions, which he ignored,” their answer, filed on Sept. 14, 2024, claimed. Attorneys for the park refused PEOPLE’s Aug. 13 request for comment, citing pending litigation. Read the original article on People View the full article

Read the full story on Modern Car Collector Street-Legal 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail Offered for $20 MillionOne of the rarest McLarens ever built, a 1997 F1 GTR Longtail that once competed at Le Mans, is now on the market for an asking price of $20 million. The car, listed by U.K.-based specialist Girardo & Co., is one of just 10 Longtail variants produced during the F1 GTR’s final year of competition. Originally developed for endurance racing, the extended rear bodywork provided greater downforce at high speeds. This particular chassis, numbered 27R, is notable for being the ninth Longtail built and the first to claim a race victory. 10 Must-Have Tools and Gear for the Modern Car Collector (Amazon Edition) Delivered new in 1997 to British team owner David Morrison of Parabolica Motorsport, the F1 GTR made its mark in the FIA GT Championship and the British GT Championship, where it won the season opener at Silverstone. It remains the only privately entered Longtail to have led a lap in an FIA GT race. Garage Lighting for Collectors: How to See Swirls, Not Just Your Car Still finished in its distinctive yellow-and-blue Parabolica livery, 27R retains its original BMW-sourced 6.0-liter V-12 engine, which was capable of producing close to 900 horsepower when new. The car underwent a comprehensive restoration by renowned specialist Dean Lanzante in 2011, followed by a road conversion in 2017. The transformation included revised steering, increased ride height, and other adjustments to make it street-compliant in the United Kingdom. The restoration and road-legal conversion together cost more than $500,000. Today, it represents one of the few F1 GTR Longtails that can be legally driven on public roads, adding to its appeal among collectors. With the McLaren F1 already commanding prices in the tens of millions, the offering underscores the continuing demand for motorsport icons with both race-winning heritage and road-going capability. APD said officers were called to Puckett and Bell on a reported traffic crash involving three cars Wednesday, Aug. 13, at about 10:57 a.m. They learned a blue car was heading north and turning west onto Puckett, when a white SUV heading south on Puckett struck the blue car. A black SUV, which was waiting at a stop sign on Puckett to turn onto Bell, was also struck by the white SUV, according to police. All three drivers were taken to area hospitals, and one driver had serious injuries. The APD traffic investigation unit and CSI are at the scene and are still investigating. Residents are asked to avoid the area if possible until traffic is cleared. 16. LONDON (Reuters) -Britain, France and Germany, co-chairs of the so-called "Coalition of the Willing", set out their position on the pathway to a ceasefire in Ukraine in a statement released after a virtual meeting on Wednesday. "Ukraine must have robust and credible security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," said the joint statement, published by Britain two days before a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. "The Coalition of the Willing is ready to play an active role, including through plans by those willing to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased. "No limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or on its cooperation with third countries. Russia could not have a veto against Ukraine's pathway to EU and NATO." 17. Reindeer populations across the Arctic will likely decline substantially due to future climate change with the North American population facing the highest risk, researchers predict. While the species has survived multiple periods of Arctic warming, climate change has already contributed to the loss of nearly two-thirds of the global populations of reindeer in the last three decades, according to the research team, led by the University of Adelaide in Australia and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. There are about 9 million reindeer globally, including those that are domesticated, according to the World Population Review. The North American wild reindeer, also called caribou and estimated at around 3.5 million by the World Population Review, are most at risk from a warming climate, the researchers said. Caribou are found in Alaska and Canada. The caribou populations could decline by up to 80% by 2100, "unless there are major cuts to greenhouse gas emissions and increased investment in wildlife management and conservation," Damien Fordham, an associate professor and deputy director of the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide, said in a statement. Caribou graze on May 13, 2025, in Denali National Park in Alaska. / Credit: Lance King / Getty ImagesThe researchers came to their conclusion by examining how reindeer have responded to past climate events. "Using fossils, ancient DNA and computer models, we reconstructed changes in the abundance and distribution of reindeer over the past 21,000 years at resolutions never done before, and we directly compared these to future predictions," lead researcher Elisabetta Canteri said in a statement. They found that populations of reindeer have declined during past periods of "rapid climate warming." "But the losses expected in the coming decades due to future climate change are likely to be even more severe than those in the past," Canteri said. A decline in reindeer populations also could have wider ecological implications because the animals help maintain plant diversity in the tundra. "A reduction in tundra plant diversity resulting from the loss of reindeer and caribou will have many cascading effects, including reduction of carbon storage in Arctic soils," said Eric Post, a professor at the University of California Davis who contributed to the research. "Continued losses will likely further exacerbate climatic warming through release of soil carbon to the atmosphere, which of course would further threaten reindeer and caribou as well as ourselves." 18. At least 26 migrants died Wednesday when two boats sank off the coast of Italy's Lampedusa island, with around 10 others still missing, the coastguard and UN officials said. Around 60 people were rescued after the sinkings in the central Mediterranean, a stretch between North Africa and Italy described by the UN as the world's most dangerous sea crossing for migrants. The two boats had left Tripoli, Libya, earlier in the day, according to the Italian coastguard. It said one of the boats started taking on water, causing people to climb onto the other boat, which itself then capsized. "Currently 60 people have been rescued and disembarked in Lampedusa, and (there are) at least 26 victims. The toll is still provisional and being updated," the coastguard said in a statement. Italy's Red Cross, which manages Lampedusa's migrant reception centre, said the survivors included 56 men and four women, updating a previous toll of 22 dead. Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesman for the UN's migration agency (IOM), said around 95 people had been on the two boats. Given how many had been saved, "approximately 35 victims are feared dead or missing", he wrote on social media. - 'Inhumane' traffickers - Among the first to be transported to the Lampedusa mortuary were the bodies of a newborn, three children, two men and two women, according to Italy's ANSA news agency. Lampedusa, just 90 miles (145 kilometres) off the coast of Tunisia, is often the first port of call for people trying to reach Europe in leaky or overcrowded boats. In recent years, Italian authorities have sought to intercept the boats at sea before they arrive. It was a helicopter from Italy's financial police that spotted a capsized boat and several bodies in the water on Wednesday, about 14 nautical miles off Lampedusa, the coastguard said. Five vessels were searching for survivors, including one from the EU's Frontex border agency, alongside a helicopter and two aircraft, it said. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered her "deepest condolences" to the victims and vowed to step up efforts to tackle migrant traffickers. Her hard-right government took office in October 2022 vowing to cut the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe. As part of this, it has cut deals with North African countries from which migrants embark, providing funding and training in exchange for help in stemming departures. "When a tragedy like today's occurs, with the deaths of dozens of people in the waters of the Mediterranean, a strong sense of dismay and compassion arises in all of us," Meloni said in a statement. "And we find ourselves contemplating the inhumane cynicism with which human traffickers organise these sinister journeys." She said stepping up rescue efforts was not enough to tackle the scourge of trafficking, saying this could be done only by "preventing irregular departures and managing migration flows". The UNHCR refugee agency said Wednesday that there had been 675 migrant deaths on the central Mediterranean route so far this year. As of Wednesday, 38,263 migrants have arrived on Italy's shores this year, according to the interior ministry. A similar number was recorded at the same time last year, but the figure is significantly less than in 2023, when almost 100,000 people had arrived by mid-August. bur-ar/js View the full article

  20. Hours after President Donald Trump announced an unprecedented move to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), a man was shot and killed Monday evening in a popular Washington, D.C., neighborhood, marking the 100th homicide in the District so far this year. According to the MPD, officers from the Third District responded at approximately 6:56 p.m. on Aug. 11 to reports of gunfire in the 1200 block of 12th Street NW in Logan Circle. They found the victim, later identified as 33-year-old Tymark Wells, of Northwest D.C., unconscious, not breathing and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. D.C. The Washington, D.C., City Council called the temporary takeover a "manufactured intrusion on local authority." "Violent crime in the District is at the lowest rates we’ve seen in 30 years. 21. Taylor Stanberry is the Ultimate Grand Prize Winner for the 2025 Florida Python Challenge thanks to her efforts to elimiate 60 of the invasive species wreaking havoc with the Evergaldes ecosystem. Not too shabby for a first-timer. Stanberry, 29, and a resident of Naples, was introduced as this year's Florida Python Challenge winner at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) August meeting today (Aug. 13). More: Video shows gator chomp on invasive python, swim away with it in its jaws Stanberry collected a $10,000 check for eliminating the most pythons during the 10-day compeition from July 10-20. Yes, this was the first time Stanberry has particiapted Florida Python Challenge, but it would be wrong to call her success beginners luck. She and her husband, Rhett, have been catching pythons and other snakes for a decade. They have a Facebook page where they document and share content from their adventures. They also have a YouTube Channel and Taylor has an Instagram page where she shares content. The Naples Daily News and The News-Press caught up with Stanberry by email soon after she accepted her check and received the special recognition at the FWC meeting in Havana (Gadsden County). Q&A with 2025 Florida Python Challenge grand prize winner Taylor StanberryTaylor Stanberry is the 2025 Florida Python Challenge Ultimate Grand Prize Winner. She received $10,000 for eliminating 60 Burmese pythons during the 10-day competition in July.Did you think you could get as many as 60 pythons going into this year’s Florida Python Challenge?I knew it was possible since this time of year is when nests are hatching and pythons are really moving. My husband (Rhett) I have caught more than 100 pythons before in the month of July in previous years. What was the longest Burmese python you caught in this year’s Florida Python Challenge? It was 9.5-10-feet. I caught a 12-foot one the day before the Challenge but obviously that did not count for the Challenge. What was the heaviest python you caught in the 2025 Florida Python Challenge?I am not sure how much that 9.5-10-foot python weighed, probably 12-ish pounds. Out of the 10 days, what was the most number of pythons you caught in one day?I found a nest one night with 30 babies (hatchlings) and the eggs! Where (what location or locations) were you hunting? The approved challenge areas. Note to audience: There were eight approved locations for the 2025 Python Challenge. What was the day and time of the first python you caught during this year’s challenge and can you recall the details of that catch? And how about the same for the last snake you caught – No. 60 – day and details?Honestly the 10 days is kind of a blur lol! The first snake was the first night of the Challenge, just a 5-foot python that we road-cruised. He was the one that bit me, but nothing crazy. My last snake caught during the challenge was an 8-foot python, I actually caught like seven snakes on the last night, which was crazy since so many hunters were out trying to get as many pythons as possible in the last few hours of the challenge! Any particular memorable moments from this year’s Florida Python Challenge?Honestly my favorite part of it all is just working along side my husband, and best friend, Rhett, and looking for snakes! But I will say finding babies (hatchlings) and the eggs is always a bonus! Did you get bitten during this year’s Florida Python Challenge and if so approximately how many times?Just a handful of times, once by a 5-foot python then by the itty bitty babies (hatchlings). I’m used to it! More: Florida python hunter describes python bite: 'Like a mouthful of hypodermic needles' What was your schedule like during the 10-days of the challenge? Sleep during day and out all night, or what was a typical timeframe for you for being out hunting during the 10 days?I would start my hunt around 7-8 p.m. and go until 5 a.m. then I would sleep a couple hours, take care of my rescue animals, and some days I would work my other jobs. I then had to drop off any of the snakes I captured the day before then start hunting again. It was a long 10 days! What is the key to your success for finding and eliminating Burmese pythons? Why do you think you are successful at this? What advice would you give to newbie hunters?I have been catching pythons for over 10 years. It’s all about knowing what areas to hunt, what habitat to look for and just putting in the time. Some nights I go out and won’t find a single python then other nights, I’ll find a nest of 60 babies (hatchlings)! I would tell newbie hunters to just put in the time, I’ve heard from some that they’ve hunted for “a few hours and caught nothing”. Rhett and I are out for 12 hours some nights multiple days a week. How far back does your interest in pythons and all things snakes go. I know on Rhett’s Facebook page you and him are showing photos of all kinds of snakes.I’ve been looking for wildlife since I was a little kid. I used to go fishing with my dad and we would catch toads and I would bring them home to play with them. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started traveling around the world looking for wildlife especially snakes to video and photograph. I post a lot of it on my Instagram and we have a YouTube channel called “ Tobies Troop”. Do you work or is snake hunting a full-time job for you?I work at a canine physical therapy rehab center, then I am a python contractor and I also run a small exotic animal rescue. Do you think the Florida Python Challenge is effective as far as raising awareness and getting as many people as possible to eliminate the invasive snake?Python contractors like myself and Rhett eliminate way more invasive Burmese pythons year round than novices do during the 10-day challenge. Also, every year during the challenge, a lot of native snakes are killed because novice participants cannot correctly identify native species. Any suggestions for making it better or is it perfect as it is?I think participants should do more training to be able to identify pythons from native species of snakes. Do you have any special plans for the prize money you won?I am going use the money to expand my animals enclosures and gas money for more python hunting! Will you come back next year to defend you title at the 2026 Florida Python Challenge?I am not sure if I’ll enter next year, we will have to wait and see (wink emoji). 23. Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer whose scandal in 2017 was pivotal in drawing global attention to the #MeToo movement, will be tried for a third time by New York prosecutors in the sexual assault case of Jessica Mann. New York Judge Curtis Farber said on Wednesday that he wants the trial to take place before the end of this year. A jury could not render a verdict in June on a rape charge accusing Weinstein of sexually assaulting Mann, a former actor. The same jury found Weinstein guilty in June of sexually assaulting former “Project Runway” production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and not guilty of assaulting Polish former runway model Kaja Sokola that same year. Weinstein's sentencing for the guilty verdict in Haley's case is scheduled for Sept. 30, Farber said. The judge vowed not to sentence Weinstein on the charge involving Haley until Weinstein is tried again for the charge related to Mann. Therefore, unless Weinstein pleads guilty to that charge, prosecutors drop the charge or the charge is tried before the end of September, Weinstein's sentencing will presumably be pushed to a later date. At a press conference shortly afterward, an attorney for Weinstein, Arthur Aidala, suggested that prosecutors should drop the charge related to Mann. "In the big picture, even if Mr. Weinstein got convicted of Jessica Mann, there would probably be very little effect on what his ultimate sentence would be," Aidala said. He suggested that Weinstein will not plead guilty to the charge because his client "doesn’t want the word rape associated with him in any way, shape or form." Miriam Haley, right, and attorney Gloria Allred outside court in New York on June 11. (Angela Weiss / AFP via Getty Images file)Weinstein, 73, denied all of the charges. Throughout the retrial, his lawyers insisted the sexual encounters with his three accusers were "transactional" and "consensual," and painted the women as opportunists. During deliberations, the jury foreman expressed to the judge that the jury member were clashing over reaching a verdict. The foreman told the court that one of the other jurors threatened him and told him: "You know me; you going to see me outside." The foreman then refused to continue deliberations on the final charge, prompting prosecutors to move for a mistrial. Weinstein, who co-founded global film studios Miramax and The Weinstein Company, was originally convicted of rape and criminal sexual act by the same court in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison for the crimes. The landmark sentencing was seen as a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement, which prompted a global reckoning of sexual harassment and abuse. Last year, however, New York's highest court overturned the conviction, prompting Weinstein's retrial this summer. The state Court of Appeals found that the judge in the 2020 trial prejudiced the jury by allowing women with allegations that did not pertain to the case to testify. Weinstein was also found guilty by a Los Angeles jury of sexual assault and sentenced to 16 years in state prison, a conviction he is currently appealing. The once jet-setting, Oscar-winning movie producer has remained in custody at Rikers Island jail, and has frequently been hospitalized due to health issues. 24. Tempers flared during Wednesday's joint practice between the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. found himself in the middle of the scuffle. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] After Penix hit Ray-Ray McCloud III on a deep pass, Penix was exchanging pleasantries with Titans defenders when things went from heated to physical. The Falcons quarterback ended up in the middle of a pile as players from both teams ran over from the sidelines. “They had a lot of words throughout practice, so I gave them my words and it just went a little bit too far," said a smiling Penix. There were no reported injuries from the incident and Penix was out on the field for the next series. Several instances of pushing and shoving occurred after that, but no punches appeared to have been thrown. "[Penix] started it on that one, on Team 1," said Titans linebacker Arden Key, via ESPN. "But again, those guys in Atlanta, they protected the quarterback, which they were supposed to do. O-line came in, did what they did, and we wasn't allowing that, but that's what they were supposed to do." Penix was appreciative of his teammates coming to his aid before anything escalated saying, "A lot of guys asked me if I was good, and it was good to know that those guys had my back." The second-year Falcons quarterback joked he blacked out during the fight and that he was "somebody else out there." Not one to initiate trash talk, Penix said he's not afraid to give it right back to opponent who thinks he doesn't have the ability to dish it out. "They probably looked at me as just the quarterback, [that] I wasn't that type of person," Penix said. "But I'm from Tampa. I'm from Dade City. ... There's a respect part about it. We're all playing, we're all competing at a high level, but when disrespect comes in, it's like, 'All right, this ain't football no more.'" Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has already announced that Penix will not play on Friday in the team's second preseason game against the Titans. Kirk Cousins will also likely sit with Easton Stick and Emory Jones seeing action. View the full article
