  2. Can Cadillac Compete with Tesla and Porsche with an All-Electric Performance Sedan? originally appeared on Autoblog. Can an American legend redefine its sedan?Sedans have been synonymous with Cadillac since dinosaurs roamed the Earth, and perhaps even before the birth of Father Time himself. The traditional three-box four-door saloon is a long-standing staple of the legendary American luxury marque, and that tradition continues to this very day. Although this tradition has remained strong and true over many decades, what Cadillac's flagship sedan has stood for has changed dramatically over time. From the mob-favorite Series 62 sedans of the late 1940s, to the bright pink tailfin-laden Sedan DeVilles of the late '50s, the fit-for-president, conservatively understated Fleetwoods of the '90s, and the roaring, fire-breathing, manually-shifted supercharged V8-powered Blackwing super saloons of today, Cadillac's sedans have always mirrored the values of the American elite during each of their respective eras. Now, with Cadillac's brand-wide shift toward fully electric vehicles, perhaps it's time for Cadillac to consider what's next for the four-door sedan. Apologies to the purists, but I believe in coexistenceNow, look... I understand that what I'm proposing here is sacrilegious at best, perhaps even egregious, but certainly frivolous. Cadillac replacing the beloved, stubborn, "take these V8s from my cold, dead hands" CT5-V Blackwing with a fully-electric "performance" sedan? "That worked out so well for the Dodge Charger," you may think aloud to yourself with much spite and sarcasm. And, well, truthfully, I agree with you. Taking away such a well-loved vehicle, with such a strong-hearted American spirit beneath its bonnet, and replacing it with a battery-powered simulacra of its former self would just be plain cruel. I love the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and what it stands for just as much as the next unwavering petrolhead, but that doesn't mean I don't believe that an electric performance four-door could happily coexist alongside the Blackwing lineup in Cadillac's model portfolio. Ford has established a precedent that suggests such a bold strategy could workJust look at the Mustang, man: Ford's triumphant hurrah. The 5.0-liter Mustang GT is the last V8-powered pony car standing (at least for now; I've got my fingers permanently crossed in the hopes that Dodge will shove a V8 into the fantastic-looking new Charger soon), and continues its iconic life as a symbolic staple of American freedom and the ability for buyers to choose whatever they truly want, rather than out-of-touch politicians and overreaching regulatory organizations. At the same time, however, Ford will gladly sell you a fully electric crossover with a Mustang badge, available with multiple levels of performance and different motorsport focuses, including road, track, and even rally. FordThis strategy seems to be working pretty well for Ford, considering the Mustang Mach-E has been outselling the regular Mustang in 2025, just as it did in 2024, according to The Drive. Both of these vehicles are distinctly unique in many ways, yet they have earned a rightful place within Ford's lineup, complementing one another in a symbiotic harmony. Both the Mustang GT Fastback (or convertible) and the Mach-E can coexist because freedom of choice goes both ways, and offering both a raucous V8 sports car and a fully electric family car with more than enough power to leave the alternative well in the dust provides much-needed variety for an increasingly diverse range of buyers. Cole Attisha Using Midjourney AI View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article How could this benefit Cadillac? With the heavy push towards electrification within Cadillac's model lineup, the legacy American automaker now has the necessary hardware to pull off a serious performance sedan with battery-only power. Sitting on the GM Ultium platform, which currently underpins the Cadillac Lyriq, the Blazer EV, and even the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX, an electric Cadillac performance sedan could offer the Lyriq's optional 102 kWh battery with dual-motors as standard equipment, which would provide a feisty 500 horsepower shock to all four wheels, along with 450 lb-ft of torque. A "V" branded version could equip the Lyriq-V's 615-horsepower dual-motor setup, which also produces 650 lb-ft of torque, which could provide a hardened, high-performance alternative to segment heavy-hitters such as the Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and the Mercedes-AMG EQE. Going a step further, a Blackwing variant could approach, or perhaps even surpass, the 1,000-horsepower mark, aiming its sights directly at the likes of the Tesla Model S Plaid, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, and the Lucid Air Sapphire. Final thoughtsAlthough such a radical idea is sure to bring about a highly divisive range of opinions, that's kind of the point. People feel very strongly about things – especially when it comes to whether a performance car should have a loud and proud petrol engine or a silent yet deadly battery pack, so automakers should offer as much choice and variety as possible to cover their bases. Integrating a fully electric performance sedan into Cadillac's lineup could not only boost and diversify the brand's appeal but also serve as an intriguing test to see what people honestly prefer. And, hey, who knows, maybe it would be a total flop and Cadillac will keep on stuffing supercharged V8s under the hoods of their performance cars for the rest of eternity. That's an outcome I'd gladly accept. 3. 4. 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged For Sale With Just 36,611 Original Miles originally appeared on Autoblog. A cult classic in its own rightThe first-generation Toyota MR2 is often overshadowed by its flashier, sleeker, turbocharged successor, the W20. Still, the first-gen AW11 MR2 is a venerable classic in its own right, blending wedge-shaped proportions with agile, mid-engine handling, sprightly supercharged responsiveness, and cheerful pop-up headlights. Driving enthusiasts and collectors alike have, in recent years, begun to seek out first-generation MR2s as clean examples become increasingly challenging to find, and as modern cars stray further and further from the raw, analog driving dynamics of the MR2, which made it such a sought-after item among sporting car fans worldwide. If you've been searching for a pristine first-gen MR2, today's your lucky day. This particular 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged, with just 36,611 original miles, is for sale right now on Exotic Car Trader, and you can check it out by clicking here. Finished in a sleek coat of black over a black leather interior, this isn't just your average Joe Toyota MR2. No, this particular MR2 came factory-equipped with a belt-driven supercharger bolted onto its 4A-GZE twin-cam 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which provides up to 145 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque; a potent figure for a two-seater coupe that weighs under 2,500 pounds. That should make it a serious contender for both avid car collectors and driving enthusiasts. Although this particular MR2 comes equipped with an automatic transmission, it'll still be an absolute riot to drive. Plus, you have the option to swap in a manual gearbox of your choice, should you desire. A time capsule on wheels, this MR2 is in entirely original condition, with no modifications whatsoever, and nearly brand-new mileage. Further quirks include its factory cassette player, which, if you're as anti-social as I am, means you'll get to spend much more time scouring through vintage record stores and compiling a collection of your favorite period-correct music on tape. The gauge cluster also features analog gauges and a green LED light that illuminates when the supercharger generates boost. How fun is that?! Despite its small size, comfort isn't overlookedThanks to Toyota's legendary reliability, this MR2 could even make for a fantastic daily driver, provided its compact size doesn't make things too impractical for you and you're willing to rack up some more miles. 5. Former President Barack Obama on Wednesday said he respects California Gov. Gavin Newsom's push for a redistricting plan to add more Democratic seats in the blue state. "I believe that Gov. Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach. He said this is going to be responsible. We’re not going to try to completely maximize it," Obama said at a fundraiser Tuesday on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, according to excerpts obtained by The Associated Press. "We’re only going to do it if and when Texas and/or other Republican states begin to pull these maneuvers. Otherwise, this doesn’t go into effect," he added. Obama Praises Democrats Who Fled Texas Redistricting Vote As ‘Inspiring’ Former President Barack Obama speaks at the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum Dec. 5, 2024, in Chicago. In a post Wednesday on X, Obama said gerrymandering shouldn't be a part of politics. Instead, it should be a "fair fight" between Republicans and Democrats based on the competition of ideas. Changes in Texas and California's House seats could shift control of Congress in 2026. Some analysts say Democrats could pick up as many as five additional seats in California if Newsom’s plan succeeds, potentially canceling out Republican gains in Texas. Read On The Fox News App The plan by Newsom is intended to counter a move by Texas over congressional redistricting ahead of next year's midterm elections. In Austin, the GOP-dominated state House of Representatives last week resumed meeting at a second straight special session called by conservative Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. But Republicans in the Texas House were prevented from holding votes on a new map for two weeks when dozens of Democratic state representatives fled the state to deny the GOP a quorum in the Texas House. Newsom Unveiling California Redistricting Effort To Counter Trump-backed Push In Texas Accompanied by California and Texas lawmakers, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, center, discusses the push to schedule a special election to redraw California's congressional voting districts during a news conference in Sacramento."Since Texas is taking direction from a partisan White House and gerrymandering in the middle of a decade to try and maintain the House despite their unpopular policies, I have tremendous respect for how Governor Newsom has approached this," Obama wrote on X. The former commander in chief said Newsom put forward a "smart, measured approach" designed to address "a very particular problem at a very particular moment in time." Newsom is moving to hold a special election this year to get voter approval to undo the constitutional amendments that created the nonpartisan redistricting commission, Fox News Digital previously reported. 7. (The Center Square) – After House Democrats absconded for more than two weeks in opposition to a Congressional redistricting bill, the Texas House on Wednesday passed the bill by a vote of 88-52. It was passed after roughly eight hours of debate during which the majority of Democrats called Republicans racist. State Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, filed HB 4, the redistricting bill, which was added to the call for the first and second legislative special sessions. He also authored the redistricting bill the legislature passed in 2021 that remains in litigation. “I've heard a lot of comments, and I will tell you I don't take them personally,” Hunter said. “These are tough issues. I feel like sometimes that I'm a pinata with no candy, just being hit. But I respect all of you.” Speaking to Democrats who fled the state, he said, “you left for 17 to 19 days and most of the comments I've heard could have been handled, discussed or mutually resolved in this House within that time. You chose to leave … that's your choice. We chose to stay. That was our choice.” State Rep. Nicole Collier, D-Fort Worth, like her colleagues, said the redistricting plan was racist. Collier on Monday refused to comply with House rules she voted for, not leaving the chamber, The Center Square reported. On Wednesday, she asked Hunter if he was aware that during the time of slavery, Blacks fled, or that during Nazi rule, Jews fled. “They fled their oppressor,” she said, accusing House Republicans of being oppressors, saying they “don’t reflect the diversity of Texas.” She also complained that House Democrats weren’t involved in the redistricting process, to which Hunter replied they were gone for 17 days and chose not to be a part of the process. “When you are oppressed, you flee the oppressors,” she said. In response, state Rep. Katrina Pierson, R-Rockwall, said, “Chairman Hunter may not have taken the personal attacks and disrespect personally, but I did. The opposition gets to stand here and grandstand and say pretty much anything that they want, and we're expected to stand here and just take it. “You call my voters racist. You call my party racist, but yet we're expected to follow the rules. Well, that double standard ends today.” “More minority voters are voting their values, not their skin color,” she continued. “Many of them are moving to Texas to escape blue states because their values have been successfully gerrymandered into suppression. I've heard the accusations that this mid-decade redistricting is going to silence voters, and that it misrepresents the population of Texas. The facts don't match the rhetoric.” She said that under current congressional maps, Texas has zero Black CVAP (citizen voting age population) districts. Under the new map, there are two. She also replied to Collier’s claim, saying that Blacks fled during slavery to Republican states. “I have heard repeatedly that these maps are gerrymandered, but that doesn't fit the narrative either. That's just spin because in many parts of the state, the map eliminates gerrymandering; they emphasize compactness in whole counties and whole cities. Political performance isn't just legal, it is fair. It reflects the voters of the state of Texas,” she said. She also pointed out that President Donald Trump won Hispanic voters in Texas in the last election. “President Trump flipped 11 out of 18 counties on the Texas-Mexico border. He doubled his support from 2020. Political performance is the driver” behind the redistricting. “You lost,” she told Democrats. “Get over it.” After the vote, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, thanked members who carried the bill, also saying the new map is constitutional and legal. “These past few weeks have not been easy, but the House members who showed up for work every day have shown a dedication to their constituents that will not be forgotten,” he said. 8. Texas Democratic state Rep. Nicole Collier abruptly left a call with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic Party members after claiming she was told she was committing a felony by participating in the meeting from a state Capitol bathroom. Collier was speaking on a call with Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, Newsom and several others while the Texas House of Representatives was simultaneously debating a redistricting bill backed by President Donald Trump. While speaking on the call, Collier claimed that the Texas redistricting bill violates the Voting Rights Act and "will prevent black and brown individuals from selecting the candidates of their choice because they’re cracking and packing these districts." While Martin was speaking about 30 minutes into the call, Collier suddenly interrupted, saying, "Sorry, I have to leave. They said it's a felony for me to do this." Abbott Scores Big Win In Redistricting Battle As Texas Democrats' Blockade Collapses Democratic Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier speaking on the House floor Aug. 18, 2025, in Austin."Apparently I can’t be on the floor or in the bathroom," she continued, before turning to address someone off camera. Read On The Fox News App "You told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom," she told the person off camera before turning back to the call and saying, "No, hang on. Bye everybody. I’ve got to go." Both Newsom and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., immediately expressed outrage over Collier’s sudden departure. "That is outrageous," said Booker. "Let me tell you something, Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office." "There you go," Newsom responded, nodding his head. Newsom-style Redistricting Efforts Critiqued By California Democrats As Recently As July, Statements Show "What they’re trying to do right there is silence an American leader, silence a black woman, and that is outrageous," Booker added. "What we just witnessed, them trying to shut her down and saying it's illegal for her to be in the bathroom and on this call, this is the lengths that they’re going to in Texas." This comes after dozens of Democratic members of the Texas House fled the state and refused to return to the legislature for two weeks to hold up the redistricting bill by breaking quorum. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other state leaders ordered the rogue Democrats to be arrested and threatened to have them removed from office if they did not return to fulfill their duties. After the Democrats’ return to the legislature, members faced heightened security measures designed to ensure a quorum was maintained. Democratic lawmakers said Texas Department of Public Safety officers followed them around Monday at the state Capitol and either guarded their offices or stayed in them and tailed them when they left. They said they had to sign "permission slips" and accept the surveillance to leave the building. ‘Tired Of Democracy Dying’: Newsom Redistricting Push Faces Gop Backlash Over Voter Rights Democratic Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier speaking on the House floor Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, in Austin.Rather than comply with the measures, Collier stayed on the House floor in the Texas Capitol on Monday night and Tuesday. Despite the Democrats' standoff, the Texas House finally approved maps Wednesday. Newsom announced he would advance a redistricting map in California to counter the Texas redistricting bill. On Friday, California Democrats and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) released a new district map that would likely eliminate five GOP congressional seats, theoretically nullifying the five additional seats Republicans would gain if Texas’ redistricting push is successful. Fox News Digital reached out to the offices of Booker and Newsom but did not immediately receive a response. Collier's office declined to comment, citing the House still being in session. 17. Pope Leo XIV is shaking up tradition at the Vatican — moving into a newly renovated papal apartment and bringing four roommates, according to reports. Leo plans to share his new residence, which is undergoing a major revamp, marking the first time in modern history that a pope has decided to live communally in the palace’s official quarters, The Telegraph reported. "It seems to be new to me," Vatican correspondent Iacopo Scaramuzzi told the U.K. outlet. "I don’t know if that takes account of the long history of the Church, but certainly in the modern era." Among those reportedly joining him is his Peruvian personal secretary, Father Edgard Rimaycuna, who is often seen at Leo’s side. A trusted adviser and close friend since the Pope’s early pastoral years in South America, Father Edgard, is thought of as one of Leo’s most loyal companions. 18. On the streets of Sudan's capital Khartoum, builders clear rubble from houses pockmarked with bullet holes, haul away fallen trees and repair broken power lines, in the city's first reconstruction effort since war began over two years ago. Fighting between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which broke out in April 2023, has left the capital battered and hollowed out. But reconstruction -- led by government agencies and youth-led volunteer groups -- has finally begun to repair hospitals, schools and water and power networks. "We are working to restore the state's infrastructure," volunteer Mostafa Awad said. Once a thriving metropolis of nine million people, Khartoum's skyline is now a jagged silhouette of collapsed buildings. Electrical poles lean precariously or lie snapped on the ground in the streets. Cars, stripped for parts, sit burnt-out and abandoned, their tires melted into the asphalt. AFP correspondents saw entire residential blocks standing with their exterior walls ripped away in the fighting. Danger remains within the soot-stained buildings as authorities slowly work to clear tens of thousands of unexploded bombs left behind by fighters. The UN warns Khartoum is "heavily contaminated by unexploded ordnance", and this month said landmines have been discovered across the capital. Sudan's war has killed tens of thousands, displaced 13 million and plunged the nation into the world's worst hunger and displacement crisis. - 'Proud national capital' - Until the army pushed the RSF out of Khartoum in March, the capital -- where four million alone were displaced by fighting -- was a battlefield. Before they left, paramilitary fighters stripped infrastructure bare, looting everything from medical equipment and water pumps to copper wiring. "Normally in a war zone, you see massive destruction... but you hardly ever see what happened in Khartoum," the UN's resident and humanitarian coordinator Luca Renda said. "All the cables have been taken away from homes, all the pipes have been destroyed," he told AFP, describing systematic looting of both small and large-scale items. Today, power and water systems remain among the city's greatest challenges. The head of east Khartoum's electricity department, Mohamed al-Bashir, described "massive damage" in the capital's main transformer stations. "Some power stations were completely destroyed," he told AFP, explaining the RSF had "specifically targeted transformer oil and copper cables". Vast swathes of Khartoum are without electricity, and with no reliable water supply, a cholera outbreak gripped the city this summer. Health officials reported up to 1,500 new cases a day in June, according to the UN. On his first visit to Khartoum last month, Sudan's prime minister pledged a wide-scale recovery effort. "Khartoum will return as a proud national capital," Kamil Idris said. Even as war rages on elsewhere in the country, the government has begun planning its return from its wartime capital Port Sudan. - Taking shape - On Tuesday, it announced central Khartoum -- the devastated business and government district where some of the fiercest battles took place -- would be evacuated and redesigned. The UN estimates the rehabilitation of the capital's essential facilities to cost around $350 million, while the full rebuilding of Khartoum "will take years and several billion dollars", Renda told AFP. Hundreds have rolled up their sleeves to start the long and arduous rebuilding work, but obstacles remain. "We faced challenges such as the lack of raw materials, especially infrastructure tools, sanitation (supplies) and iron," said Mohamed El Ser, a construction worker. "Still, the market is relatively starting to recover," he told AFP. In downtown Khartoum, a worker, his hands coated in mud, stacks bricks beside a crumbling building. AFP correspondents accompanied workers carefully refitting pipes into what once was a family home, while nearby others lifted slabs of concrete and mangled metal into wheelbarrows. On one road that had been a front line, a man repaired a downed streetlight while others dragged a felled tree onto a flatbed truck. The UN expects up to two million people to make their way back to Khartoum by the end of the year. Those who have already returned, estimated to be in the tens of thousands, say life is still difficult, but there's reason for hope. "Honestly, there is an improvement in living conditions," said Ali Mohamed, who recently returned. "There is more stability now, and real services are beginning to come back, like water, electricity and even basic medical care." vid-maf/bha/csp/rsc View the full article

  21. The Utah Legislature’s Judiciary Interim Committee on Wednesday voted to favorably recommend legislation that would change how the Utah Supreme Court’s chief justice is appointed, and said they would prioritize the legislation in a potential upcoming special session. During the committee hearing Wednesday at the Capitol, the committee heard from the sponsor of the draft legislation and members of the public before voting. The draft legislation passed through the committee with a 7-4 vote among representatives and 4-1 among senators. This draft legislation comes after a similar bill that passed the Legislature during this year’s general session was vetoed by Gov. Spencer Cox. The legislation’s sponsor said he worked with the governor’s office on changes to the bill. What changes would this legislation make?Currently, the chief justice is chosen by the other justices on the court. Under this new proposed legislation, the governor would appoint a chief justice from among the current justices. This choice would then be subject to advice and consent of the state Senate. This would occur only when the position of chief justice becomes available, due to term expiry, death, resignation or removal. “The bill clarifies that the current chief justice, Chief Justice (Matthew B.) Durant, who was appointed in 2024, will still have a four-year term. His term is set to expire on April 1, 2028, of course, unless he retires or steps down from being chief justice,” said Sen. Chris Wilson, R-Logan, sponsor of the draft legislation. The legislation would also implement a new chief justice term length of eight years. It also limits the number of terms a chief justice can serve to one. One point that was highlighted throughout the hearing was that the Utah Constitution gives the legislature the power to dictate this appointment process. What changes were made from the previous bill?During the 2025 legislative session, Wilson sponsored SB296, which passed through the Legislature, but was vetoed by the governor. “What we have here, this judiciary amendments bill, is a compromise,” Wilson said during his presentation to the committee. The senator said he has worked with the governor’s office to negotiate the language in the bill. He added that the governor is “completely” on board with it now. The main change between this legislation and SB296 is changing it from four-year terms to one eight-year term. Wilson said he has not spoken directly with the Utah Supreme Court on this and is unsure what their stance on the legislation is. Sen. Brady Brammer, R-Pleasant Grove, said that the Supreme Court is aware of what is going on with this legislation and the conversations that are being had. He also spoke about the concerns of judicial independence that are brought up because of this legislation. “There’s been some questions about, you know, the independence of the judiciary. I think that’s essential, on a case-by-case basis, structurally, as it relates to the form and function of the judiciary; they are very much an interdependent body,” Brammer said. He added that according to the State Constitution, the Legislature gets to dictate how they operate structurally but when it comes to the handling of cases, the judiciary has independence. How do other states appoint their chief justices? One question asked of Wilson during his presentation was about how other states appoint their chief justices. He said there are 13 other states where the governor currently appoints the chief justices. In most other states, the chief justice is chosen by the other justices. Wilson also pointed out that the federal process is similar to this proposed legislation, in that the chief justice is appointed by the executive branch and confirmed by the legislative branch. Committee chair Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, also looked up how other states appoint their chief justices and shared some of his findings. According to Weiler, in South Carolina and Virginia, the legislature is allowed to pick the high court justices instead of the governor, while in North Carolina, the chief justice is chosen by all of the judges in the state including supreme court judges and district court judges. In seven states, elections are used to select chief justices and in four states, the chief justice is determined by seniority. Public weighs in on legislationDuring public comment period on Wednesday, Stan Rasmussen, vice president of government affairs at the Sutherland Institute, spoke in favor of the legislation on behalf of the institute. “We express support for this proposal, and for public record I wanted to express appreciation for Sen. Wilson in these revisions and encourage each of you to support the bill,” Rasmussen said. Business owner Steven Rosenberg spoke against the bill, saying that the justices should be left to choose their own leader. “If something isn’t broken, then why are we changing it? If it’s worked throughout the history of this great state of Utah, why must we change it now?” Rosenberg said. Camille James, a resident of Ogden, also spoke out against the legislation saying “We should not have one person choosing the chief justice of our Utah Supreme Court.” Members of the committee said the governor’s choice has to be approved by the Senate, meaning there isn’t just one person making the decision. What does the court’s chief justice do?Michael Drechsel, assistant state court administrator, said the chief justice operates as the chief administrative officer of the Supreme Court and the judiciary under the state Constitution. This includes administering the day-to-day operations of the Supreme Court. How this is done, Drechsel said, varies with the person. Drechsel confirmed that the chief justice does not tell the other justices how to rule on decisions, and does not get to pick which cases are heard and aren’t heard. View the full article
  22. Barack Obama waded into states’ efforts at rare mid-decade redistricting efforts, saying he agreed with California governor Gavin Newsom’s plan to counter the new Texas congressional map by launching an effort to redraw his own state’s map and create more Democratic-friendly districts, calling it “a responsible approach”. “I believe that governor Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach. He said this is going to be responsible. We’re not going to try to completely maximize it,” Obama said at a Tuesday fundraiser on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. “We’re only going to do it if and when Texas and/or other Republican states begin to pull these maneuvers. Otherwise, this doesn’t go into effect.” Obama also called Newsom’s strategy “measured”, as it only temporarily grants the California legislature the ability to redraw maps mid-decade. While noting that “political gerrymandering” is not his “preference,” Obama said that, if Democrats “don’t respond effectively, then this White House and Republican-controlled state governments all across the country, they will not stop, because they do not appear to believe in this idea of an inclusive, expansive democracy”. According to organizers, the event raised $2m for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee and its affiliates, one of which has filed and supported litigation in several states over Republican-drawn districts. The former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Eric Holder, who served as Obama’s attorney general and heads up the group, also appeared. The former president’s comments come as Texas lawmakers approved a plan to redraw the state’s congressional districts, passing a new map on Wednesday that fulfills Donald Trump’s desire to tilt the US House map in his favor before the 2026 midterm elections. The vote was 88 in favor and 52 against. The map could give Republicans five new House seats in 2026 and took more than two weeks to pass, after Democratic state lawmakers staged a walkout over what they described as a “a power grab”. Several legislators traveled to states run by Democrats, and the protest ultimately set the stage for a redistricting battle now playing out across the country. Spurred on by the Texas situation, Democratic governors including Newsom have pondered ways to possibly strengthen their party’s position by way of redrawing US House district lines, five years out from the census count that typically leads into such procedures. In California – where voters in 2010 gave the power to draw congressional maps to an independent commission, with the goal of making the process less partisan – Democrats have unveiled a proposal that could give that state’s dominant political party an additional five US House seats in a bid to win the fight to control Congress next year. If approved by voters in November, the blueprint could nearly erase Republican House members in the nation’s most populous state, with Democrats intending to win the party 48 of its 52 US House seats, up from 43. Related: Barack Obama praises Texas Democrats’ fight as they signal return to state A hearing over that measure devolved into a shouting match Tuesday as a Republican lawmaker clashed with Democrats, and a committee voted along party lines to advance the new congressional map. California Democrats do not need any Republican votes to move ahead, and legislators are expected to approve a proposed congressional map and declare a 4 November special election by Thursday to get required voter approval. Newsom and Democratic leaders say they’ll ask voters to approve their new maps only for the next few elections, returning map-drawing power to the commission following the 2030 census – and only if a Republican state moves forward with new maps. Obama applauded that temporary timeline. “And we’re going to do it in a temporary basis because we’re keeping our eye on where we want to be long term,” Obama said, referencing Newsom’s take on the California plan. “I think that approach is a smart, measured approach, designed to address a very particular problem in a very particular moment in time.” The Associated Press contributed reporting View the full article

The controversial health and human services secretary, 71, went viral for wearing jeans to the gym after he and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, 45, filmed what they called the "Pete and Bobby Challenge" — 100 push-ups and 50 pull-ups in 10 minutes. After sparking confusion online, Kennedy addressed his fashion choices in an interview with Fox News. "Well, I just started doing that a long time ago because I would go hiking in the morning and then I’d go straight to the gym," he said. "And I found it was convenient, and now I’m used to it, so I just do it." Pete Hegseth/X RFK Jr. and Pete Hegseth during their "Pete and Bobby Challenge."The challenge, seemingly part of the Trump administration's "Make America Healthy Again" campaign, saw the health secretary sporting his usual jeans, while the defense secretary (and every other challenge participant) wore standard workout shorts. Kennedy's social media history proves that his workout jeans are not a new habit. In June 2023 — when he was still running for president as a Democrat — the politician shared a clip of himself donning jeans and no shirt as he worked to complete a set of pushups. "Getting in shape for my debates with President Biden!" he wrote in the caption, adding, "And yes, I can do more than 10 push-ups. That was my last set." Kennedy prepared similarly for his confirmation hearings to become the HHS secretary. On Dec. 1, 2024, he shared a clip from the gym — once again wearing jeans and no shirt — where he said he was "practicing moves for my confirmation hearing." Despite allegations from his cousin Caroline Kennedy that he was unfit to serve in Trump's Cabinet, RFK Jr. was narrowly confirmed by the Senate on Feb. 13. The health secretary's viral workout with Hegseth comes during his controversial first months in the role, sparked in part by his COVID-19 vaccine restrictions and offensive comments about autism. Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has also courted criticism since he was tapped to join Trump's administration, overcoming a sexual assault allegation during his confirmation hearings and quickly using his new title to oust transgender people from the military. 24. View the full article
  25. It has become a tradition Argentina's capital Buenos Aires: each Wednesday, baton-wielding riot police corral or confront a band of protesters brandishing signs, shopping bags and walking frames. For sure, these veteran "militants" are vocal. Sometimes they are even feisty. But they are also gray-haired, wrinkled and at times struggle to keep their balance. "For God's sake!" 87-year-old Ricardo Migliavacca shouted during a recent police advance that nearly toppled him. "How disgraceful!" He recovered only with the help of his sturdy blue Zimmer frame. Migliavacca is just one of hundreds of pensioners who have taken part in weekly protests against Argentina's right-wing President Javier Milei. They want a pension increase to soften the blow of Argentina's seemingly endless price increases. But Milei -- who at 54 is still at least a decade away from retirement age -- is not convinced. The economically ultraliberal president has twice vetoed moves by Congress to raise pensions. This, after all, is the politician who has brought a chainsaw on stage to demonstrate his cost-cutting zeal. "My task is not to seem good, it is to do good," he said in a recent speech, "even if the cost is being called cruel." During this last year of protests, his government and the police have been accused of just such cruelty. They have used tear gas, spray, batons, rubber bullets, and water cannon to disperse the pensioners -- and the assorted groups that join them. The government does not report figures on injuries or arrests during the protests. But according to Amnesty International, 1,155 people were injured last year, 33 of them hit by rubber bullets in the head or face. During one recent scuffle, blows were exchanged on the police line. In a narrow alley, an elderly man writhed on the floor as helpers tried to pour liquid into his tear-gas-seared eyes. A young couple in a glass-walled gym nearby ignored the scene and continued lifting weights. - 'Gangster retiree' - Beatriz Blanco is about to turn 82. She arrived at one protest wearing a shirt reading "gangster retiree" -- the nickname the government gave her for allegedly assaulting police officers. "Watch out, she's dangerous!" jokes a man as he sees her pass. She smiles and waves her walking stick in greeting. In March, the octogenarian was pushed by a policeman and hit her head on the pavement, leaving her lying in a pool of blood. "I thought I was dead," she said. "Then came the anger and pain of being unable to fix anything." Many of the pensioners have a history of activism that began as students in the 1960s, when Argentina lurched from democracy toward military dictatorship. "I still maintain that spirit of rebellion," Migliavacca said. But behind the activism, there is also an acute need. Nearly half of Argentina's 7.8 million retirees receive the near-minimum US$260 a month. That is estimated to be less than a third of the cost of basic goods needed by the elderly. "You can't live like this. Especially not as an elderly person. People need moments of joy," Blanco told AFP. - 'Constantly' beaten - Since coming to power in 2023, Milei has sought to straighten out Argentina's finances, cutting red tape, curbing inflation, and winning a new IMF bailout. But his cuts have been felt acutely across the public sector: in schools, hospitals, research centers and the social safety net. Milei's remains relatively popular, with an approval rating of around 40 percent, but the pensioners have become one of the most prominent and emotive sources of opposition, according to political scientist Ivan Schuliaquer. "The retirees are not showing a willingness to physically defend themselves, yet they are constantly being beaten," he told AFP. There are worries that the harsh security response to such a vulnerable part of the population could be desensitizing Argentines to political violence. "What this government is doing, no one has done in the democratic era, no one," warned historian Felipe Pigna. lm/arb/dl View the full article
