‘Tis the week for small AI models, it seems. On Thursday, Ai2, the nonprofit AI research institute, released Olmo 2 1B, a 1-billion-parameter model that Ai2 claims beats similarly-sized models from Google, Meta, and Alibaba on several benchmarks. Parameters, sometimes referred to as weights, are the internal components of a model that guide its behavior. Olmo 2 1B is available under a permissive Apache 2.0 license on the AI dev platform Hugging Face. Unlike most models, Olmo 2 1B can be replicated from scratch; Ai2 has provided the code and data sets (Olmo-mix-1124, Dolmino-mix-1124) used to develop it. Small models might not be as capable as their behemoth counterparts, but importantly, they don’t require beefy hardware to run. That makes them much more accessible for developers and hobbyists contending with the limitations of lower-end and consumer machines. There’s been a raft of small model launches over the past few days, from Microsoft’s Phi 4 reasoning family to Qwen’s 2.5 Omni 3B. Most of these — and Olmo 2 1B — can easily run on a modern laptop or even a mobile device. Ai2 says that Olmo 2 1B was trained on a data set of 4 trillion tokens from publicly available, AI-generated, and manually created sources. Tokens are the raw bits of data models ingest and generate — 1 million tokens is equivalent to about 750,000 words. On a benchmark measuring arithmetic reasoning, GSM8K, Olmo 2 1B scores better than Google’s Gemma 3 1B, Meta’s Llama 3.2 1B, and Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 1.5B. Olmo 2 1B also eclipses the performance of those three models on TruthfulQA, a test for evaluating factual accuracy. Like all AI models, it can produce “problematic outputs” including harmful and “sensitive” content, the organization says, as well as factually inaccurate statements. For these reasons, Ai2 recommends against deploying Olmo 2 1B in commercial settings.

Bench, the accounting and tax startup that was bought in a fire sale last December, has conducted a round of significant layoffs, it confirmed to TechCrunch. Bench didn’t specify how many people were affected, but one person who works there estimated that Bench was eliminating dozens of positions – that’s a big chunk of the around 300 people who work for the company. Departments like client success and tax services were directly impacted, with one person directly familiar with the matter telling TechCrunch that most of Bench’s U.S.-based tax advisory team was eliminated. Employer.com, the San Francisco HR tech company that bought Bench last year, told TechCrunch the decision to make the cuts “was not made lightly.” “We deeply appreciate the contributions of our employees who have worked diligently to maintain these accounts,” Employer.com CMO Matt Charney said. Under previous ownership, Bench raised over $110 million in VC funding and over $50 million in debt, but never reached profitability. The company burned through its cash and abruptly shut down, laying off its entire staff and leaving thousands of customers without access to their books. Employer.com then swooped in, buying Bench for $9 million, re-hiring most of the startup’s workforce, and pledging to revive the startup. The move saved Bench from total collapse. At the time of the sale, Employer.com said this was a temporary measure. These people also told TechCrunch that Bench has said internally that a majority of its workforce would be based outside of North America. However, CMO Charney said the recent cuts reflect “the realities of turning around the business and addressing legacy issues, rather than being part of any strategic outsourcing initiative.” Charney told TechCrunch that Bench is continuing to explore longer-term solutions for employees, which the company calls “Benchmates,” but that this structure was the most viable option to get people onboarded quickly post-close. Beyond structuring its workforce, Bench has faced other challenges, the current and former Benchmates told TechCrunch. For example, a large number of Bench customers churned after tax season ended on April 15, they said. Bench also wasn’t able to finish many customers’ taxes on time, one person directly familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. Some frustrated customers also alleged that Bench charged people for services they already paid for under prior ownership. (Bench told TechCrunch at the time that it honors all pre-paid services.) Charney told TechCrunch that while some customers have left, this was partly an intentional move to let go of unprofitable customers. “While we’ve seen an uptick in customer churn, a significant portion of it has been intentional and necessary,” Charney said. “Over time, legacy pricing and servicing decisions made before our acquisition of Bench led to a subset of customers being supported at a loss.” Charney added that going forward, Bench has plans to grow both features and headcount. FutureHouse, an Eric Schmidt-backed nonprofit that aims to build an “AI scientist” within the next decade, has launched its first major product: a platform and API with AI-powered tools designed to support scientific work. Many, many startups are racing to develop AI research tools for the scientific domain, some with massive amounts of VC funding behind them. Tech giants seem bullish, too, on AI for science. Earlier this year, Google unveiled the “AI co-scientist,” an AI the company said could aid scientists in creating hypotheses and experimental research plans. The CEOs of AI companies OpenAI and Anthropic have asserted that AI tools could massively accelerate scientific discovery, particularly in medicine. But many researchers don’t consider AI today to be especially useful in guiding the scientific process, in large part due to its unreliability. FutureHouse on Thursday released four AI tools: Crow, Falcon, Owl, and Phoenix. Crow can search scientific literature and answer questions about it; Falcon can conduct deeper literature searches, including of scientific databases; Owl looks for previous work in a given subject area; and Phoenix uses tools to help plan chemistry experiments. Part of the challenge in developing an “AI scientist” is anticipating an untold number of confounding factors. AI might come in handy in areas where broad exploration is needed, like narrowing down a vast list of possibilities. But it’s less clear whether AI is capable of the kind of out-of-the-box problem-solving that leads to bonafide breakthroughs. In 2023, Google said around 40 new materials had been synthesized with the help of one of its AIs, called GNoME. Yet an outside analysis found not a single one of the materials was, in fact, net new. AI’s technical shortcomings and risks, such as its tendency to hallucinate, also make scientists wary of endorsing it for serious work. Even well-designed studies could end up being tainted by misbehaving AI, which struggles with executing high-precision work. Indeed, FutureHouse acknowledges that its AI tools — Phoenix in particular — may make mistakes. “We are releasing [this] now in the spirit of rapid iteration,” the company writes in its blog post. “Please provide feedback as you use it.”

Dub, the copy-trading platform that says it’s transforming how Gen Z invests, has secured a $30 million Series A funding round, bringing its total raised to $47 million. The deal, which founder Steven Wang had previously hinted to TechCrunch was in the works, comes a year after its official launch. The 23-year-old Harvard dropout’s platform has been steadily growing, surpassing 1 million downloads, says Dub, by allowing users to mirror the investment strategies of successful traders. “The ultra-wealthy have long leveraged expert money managers. Now, Dub brings that same advantage to everyday investors,” says a press release citing Wang, who told TechCrunch in a recent podcast that he began investing in second grade. The platform, which costs $10 per month to subscribe, has gained viral attention for features like following portfolios that mirror trades of high-profile politicians, including Nancy Pelosi’s disclosed moves. The Series A was co-led by Notable Capital and Neo (which we also just profiled). Other participants in the round include Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners, Peak6 Strategic Capital, and Correlation Ventures. Silicon Valley Bank provided a $5.5 million venture debt facility.

Increased tariffs cost Apple $900 million last quarter, the company said when it announced solid first quarter results. While almost a $1 billion in extra fees paid to the government is nothing to sneeze at, Apple is so enormous that one analyst on the quarterly earnings call described the hit as surprisingly low. Apple reported first quarter revenue of $95.4 billion. And even with the tariff payment, it still reported earnings per share profit of $1.65, a first-quarter record, it said. The big question on the minds of tech users — as well as many tech startups that prefers to outfit employees with Macs — is if Cook foresees ongoing tariffs increasing Apple’s prices. At least as far as the next quarter is concerned, this is unlikely. When asked outright about tariff-induced price increases, Cook said he had “nothing to announce at this time.” He explained that Apple is now importing a larger portion of its iPhones from India, rather than China, keeping the tariff hit reduced. As for Macs, a bigger portion of those are coming from Vietnam, he said. The devices produced in China are largely being sent to Apple’s customers outside the U.S., he added. The biggest hit in tariff costs for Apple, he said, was with the AppleCare and the accessories businesses — aka spare parts to fix a broken device covered under its warranty program, and things like iPhone cases. For those businesses, the tariff rate hit “at least 145%,” he said. But he did explain that Apple hasn’t been hit as hard as it could have been. That was largely because its products “including iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro” aren’t currently subject “to global reciprocal tariffs” while the Commerce Department conducts an investigation into how tariffs affect imports of semiconductors and the products that use them. So should consumers and startups buy their Macs now rather the later? Cook says Apple is doing what it can to keep costs in check, including influencing the tariff policy itself. “Obviously, we’re very engaged on the tariff discussions. We believe in engagement and will continue to engage. On the pricing piece, we have nothing to announce today,” Cook said.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says there are two kinds of people who come to the social media platform: Scrollers and seekers. Scrollers are the ones who come to Reddit’s core product, which is community conversation and engaging about topics they’re passionate about, from r/sourdough to r/popculturechat. Then there are the Seekers; the people who might type their specific query into Google Search and tack “Reddit” on the end so they can find real advice and opinions from real people. Reddit Answers, the company’s AI-powered chatbot that surfaces verbatim answers and summaries from existing Reddit posts, is for the Seekers. And early results suggest it is already gaining traction. “Up until very recently, we haven’t built a product for them,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said Thursday on the company’s first-quarter earnings call. “Those users are not coming to Reddit for a community in that moment. They’re coming for an answer. And I think we can [acknowledge] the use case that the user’s bringing us and be more effective at solving it.” Reddit announced during the call that its Answers product already has 1 million weekly active users since it launched in beta in December. Last month, Reddit expanded Answers beyond the U.S. and into Australia, the U.K., Canada, and India. The feature, which is still in beta, currently lives in the navigation bar of the app as its own separate experience. Going into 2025, Reddit plans to integrate Answers more deeply into the platform in a few different ways. Huffman said the most obvious way to do this would be to integrate Answers into the primary search box, which could allow users to type in a full query rather than just a few keywords. Another “point of entry” for Answers would be through external search, “helping [users] get a more summarized or easy-to-parse version of the answer on Reddit,” Huffman said. That could also protect Reddit from being at the mercy of Google Search. In the fourth quarter of 2024, a Google Search algorithm change caused some “volatility” with Reddit’s user growth, which spooked investors at the time, despite beating earnings estimates. “We’re an open platform, and we want people to find Reddit content in [Google] Search,” Huffman said. “Being open drives awareness and visibility. It can also create variability, and we do expect some bumps along the way from Google, because we’ve already seen a few this year. This is expected in any year, but given that the Search ecosystem is under heavy construction, the near term could be more bumpy than usual.” Reddit’s stock soared in after-hours trading as the company beat analyst earnings expectations and strong user growth. The company reported revenue of $392.4 million, up 61% year-over-year, an adjusted EBITDA of $115.3 million, and daily active unique users of 108.1 million, a 31% YoY increase. In the second quarter, Reddit estimates revenue in the range of $410 million to $430 million and adjusted EBITDA between $110 million and $130 million.

Amazon’s upgraded digital assistant powered by generative AI, Alexa+, has rolled out to over 100,000 users, CEO Andy Jassy said on the company’s earnings call Thursday. While that’s a far cry from the 600 million Alexa devices out there, the company is making some progress on the rollout of Alexa+, which was first unveiled in February. At the time, Amazon said that Alexa+ would roll out in waves over the coming months. Amazon’s new digital assistant aims to let users talk with it in a more natural style, and eventually have agentic abilities that allow it to use third-party apps on a user’s behalf. Alexa+ should be able to generate original responses on the fly, much like the voice modes in OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, rather than the predetermined responses of the old Alexa and Siri systems. However, as The Washington Post reported at launch, the Alexa+ that’s rolling out today lacks some of the key features the company demoed in February. The report notes that, at launch, Alexa+ did not have the ability to use third party apps like GrubHub, generate a bedtime story for children, or brainstorm a gift idea. It’s unclear when those features will make it into Alexa+. “We have a lot more functionality that we plan to add in coming months,” Jassy said on the call. During his opening comments, Jassy claimed that Alexa+ is one of the first action-oriented AI agents for consumers. But he noted that this technology is still rather “primitive” and “inaccurate.” Currently, most multi-step AI agents have a low accuracy rate, between 30% and 60%, the Amazon CEO said. Jassy set a goal for the company’s web-browsing agent that powers Alexa+, Nova Act, to achieve 90% accuracy in this domain. Amazon’s rollout of Alexa+ seems to be progressing faster than Apple’s rollout of its new, LLM-powered Siri. When asked about the new Siri delays on Apple’s Thursday earnings call, which occurred simultaneously wiith Amazon’s, CEO Tim Cook said the company needed “more time to complete the work.” Along the road to supercharge legacy digital assistants with generative AI, both Apple and Amazon have reportedly run into snags and delays. Some of the biggest hiccups are around getting LLMs to use tools and integrate with other systems. Doing so allows Alexa and Siri to complete practical tasks such as setting timers and reading texts, but implementing it has proven harder than expected.
