Manus, the once-buzzy AI agent platform, on Tuesday launched a plan aimed at small businesses and organizations. The plan, dubbed Manus Team, starts at $39 per seat per month with a five-seat minimum, totaling $195 per month. Each team gets 19,500 credits in a sharable pool, as well as access to certain features in beta, dedicated infrastructure, and priority access during peak hours. Manus Team is live! Lengthier tasks can burn up hundreds — or even thousands — of credits. Team users can run up to two tasks concurrently and can optionally use Manus’ “high-effort mode” for improved reliability. Manus, which went viral in March in part thanks to a buzzy social media campaign, has introduced a number of premium offerings in recent weeks as well as a mobile app. The startup behind the platform, Butterfly Effect, reportedly recently raised $75 million in a funding round led by Benchmark that valued the company at $500 million. According to Bloomberg, Manus aims to expand to new markets, including Japan and the Middle East. The company also intends to continue upgrading the AI models that power its platform. Currently, Manus primarily uses Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet and customized versions of Alibaba’s Qwen.

In the U.S., a number of startups aim to be the corporate spend manager of choice for small and large businesses. Brex, Ramp, and Mercury are among those companies, just to name a few. Moving north of the border to Canada, the options are fewer, but growing. Keep is a startup that has built a financial platform specifically designed for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). On Tuesday, it announced a total of $23 million in equity funding, a $50 million credit facility, and a $3 million venture debt line, it shared with TechCrunch exclusively. This year, Keep raised $12 million in what it describes as a Series A1 round that was led by Tribe Capital. It previously raised $8 million in a Series A led by Tribe Capital in May of 2023, and $8 million in a seed round in November of 2021. Treville Capital Group provided the credit line, and Silicon Valley Bank the venture debt. Keep co-founder and CEO Oliver Takach declined to reveal the startup’s valuation, saying only that Keep “had a 5x step up in valuation from the Series A and 20x increase in revenue.” Takach is no stranger to startups. Prior to co-founding Toronto-based Keep with Helson Taveras in 2021, he was a two-time Y Combinator founder (CareLedger, YCS15, and Origin, YCW17; both startups are now inactive). He also helped found another startup called Retriever that was sold to a marketing company. Over the years, Takach and Taveras struggled with available financial tools, especially those provided by traditional banks, so they decided to build an offering of their own. In 2023, Keep launched its corporate credit card as part of its quest to serve as “the mission control center for a company’s finances.” Besides the corporate card, Keep offers businesses multi-currency accounts, automated expense management, and integrations with accounting software. The company makes money in part by earning interchange revenue when businesses use its corporate cards. It also charges fees for capital advances and short-duration installment loans, and earns revenue from premium payment options when customers send funds instantly or exchange currencies. Toronto-based Float Financial also aims to serve SMBs in Canada and is Keep’s closest competitor, according to Takach. In his view, one of Keep’s differentiators is its multi-currency capabilities, which help its customers “bank like a local” and allow cross-border operations. Tribe Capital led Keep’s latest equity raise, which included participation from existing and new backers Rebel Fund, Liquid 2 Ventures, Cambrian, and Assurant Ventures. Several angel investors, including Dropbox co-founder Arash Ferdowsi, Webflow co-founder and CEO Vlad Magdalin, Alloy co-founders Tommy Nicholas and Laura Spiekerman, and Marc Bhargava, a managing director at General Catalyst, also participated in the financing. “Managing expenses, sending and receiving money, handling currency exchanges seamlessly, and giving employees controlled access to funds are now table stakes,” Arjun Sethi, co-founder of Tribe Capital, told TechCrunch. “Vertically integrating these services isn’t a luxury anymore — it’s the new standard.” Looking ahead, Keep aims to launch a banking product and add more features, such as embedded credit options and bill pay.

Amazon’s autonomous vehicle unit Zoox is about to start mapping and gathering data in Atlanta, Georgia, a precursor to testing its self-driving vehicles and eventually offering public rides in the city. Atlanta will become the seventh city in the U.S. where Zoox is testing its vehicles. The company announced its testing plans just one day after Waymo — along with partner Uber — said it would start offering rides in its own robotaxis to early access users in Atlanta ahead of a larger public launch this summer. Zoox is taking a methodical approach to the rollout of its promised robotaxi service. In Atlanta, as in other cities, the company says it will initially use its modified Toyota Highlanders to record things like the geometry of each road and the location of traffic lights. Only after that will Zoox start testing its autonomous vehicle technology. The company has progressed to testing its purpose-built robotaxi without a safety operator in California cities like Foster City and San Francisco, as well as in Las Vegas, Nevada. Zoox plans to offer public rides in San Francisco and Las Vegas by the end of this year. As part of that process, the company has been working out kinks in its autonomous vehicle technology. Zoox issued recalls in March and in May related to software updates meant to fix problems that its self-driving test fleet have encountered during testing.

Amazon Music announced Tuesday that it’s testing a new AI-powered search feature called “Explore,” designed to help fans learn more about their favorite artists. To use this feature, users can tap the “Find” button at the bottom of the screen and enter an artist’s name in the search bar. Then, by selecting the “Explore” tab at the top left, users can discover information about the artist, including collaborations with other singers, related artists they might not know, and highlights from their discography. For example, when users look up Jelly Roll, the AI will direct them to notable duets, such as “Save Me,” featuring Lainey Wilson. This feature also serves as a way for Amazon Music to promote its original content, like Jelly Roll’s exclusive cover of “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” featuring T-Pain. Additionally, users will have the option to create an AI-generated playlist. Last year, Amazon Music launched its answer to Spotify’s AI DJ, called Maestro, as part of its strategy to compete against the streaming giant. Incorporating Maestro into the Explore feature is likely aimed at encouraging more users to try out the AI playlist function. While the goal of Explore seems to be to keep users engaged with the app for a longer period and connect with artists, it also comes a few months after Amazon raised the price of its Music Unlimited subscription by $1, indicating an effort to encourage more users to pay the new cost of $11 with an enticing new feature. Explore is rolling out today to select Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers in the U.S. on the iOS app. However, it is important to note that the beta feature is currently limited to only 10,000 artists, such as Bad Bunny and BLACKPINK, among others.

The global assistive technology market was valued at more than $22 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow substantially by 2030. Despite the potential market size, many founders building tech to help people with disabilities struggle to secure the kind of early funding needed to get their companies off the ground in the first place. Adaptation Ventures is a new angel group hoping to fill that funding gap by providing capital to early-stage startups building accessibility tech. It will back startups building tech specifically for persons with disabilities as well as companies with products designed for a broader market that also helps those populations. The firm was co-founded by married couple Brittany Palmer and Rich Palmer (pictured above), both of whom are former startup founders, angel investors, and persons with disabilities. Brittany told TechCrunch she experienced this funding gap problem firsthand when she tried to raise capital for her company Beeyonder, a startup that offered virtual travel experiences to persons with disabilities. “Venture capital firms really didn’t understand the disability community, or how big it was, or the opportunities to sell to them,” she said. “When I was talking with founders in the disability tech space, there was a similar sort of consensus that a lot of people in the startup and venture world really didn’t understand the space.” Rich, the former co-founder of Gravyty, found the same sentiment while he was working on the investing side as a managing director, and then angel investor, at Launchpad Venture Group, an angel investing group focused on tech and science-based startups. “We knew this opportunity existed,” he said. “We were meeting incredible founders, and trying to figure out the best way to get capital to them.” Techcrunch event Join us at TechCrunch Sessions: AI Secure your spot for our leading AI industry event with speakers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cohere. Berkeley, CA | June 5 REGISTER NOW Despite the couple’s angel investing experience, they initially set out to raise a traditional venture fund and pitched numerous LPs, including impact investors and high-net-worth individuals. While they did see some traction on their original fund idea, some of that interest dried up alongside the changing narratives in the industry, and beyond, surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion that came with the new presidential administration. They also found that high-net-worth individuals were more interested in getting directly involved with the startups in this space, as opposed to serving as LPs in a fund, and they started to think about building an angel group instead. “We’ve both benefited from angel investors who took early bets on us,” Rich said. “We are both people with disabilities. We went out and we’re learning that, you know, there are no angel groups in this space. There’s no first money in that’s helping companies get from point A to point B and it’s crazy.” Adaptation Ventures plans to invest a minimum of $250,000 into each company with the option for co-investing too. The group will hold quarterly meetings that include a minimum of four pitches and investors will vote on which companies should make it to the due diligence stage, Brittany said. There are a lot of potential companies that fall under the group’s investment strategy which Rich described as, making the big stuff smaller and the expensive stuff cheaper. Companies that fit the group’s thesis could include something like ReBokeh, a company that builds assistive technology for people with low vision. It also includes companies that aren’t focused on accessibility, but can also help those with disabilities like Tonal, Rich mentioned as an example, which makes exercising more accessible to those with disabilities that prevent them from holding physical weights. Rich joked that with the pair’s collective decades of experience in the startup and investing world, they have been practicing for this new role for the last 10 years. “I’m a brain aneurysm survivor,” he said. “I’ve had temporary and permanent disabilities as a result of that. [Brittany] is a bilateral amputee. It’s hard not to notice these things or hear these things about us. So we have attracted founders in this space and invested as angels for the past several years. The odds are kind of against you getting that funding, and so we almost had to do it.”

Electrifying a fleet of vehicles is the chicken-and-egg problem for the 21st century. Where do you spend money first, on the vehicles or the charging infrastructure? Believe it or not, that question isn’t always thought through. Joshua Aviv, founder and CEO of SparkCharge, has had fleets approach him and say, “Hey, the cars are here. They’re sitting on the lot. We’ve got no way to service them, no way to charge them. Can you guys help us out?” he told TechCrunch. Some companies are a tad more prepared and give Aviv a week’s notice, sometimes longer. But that’s not entirely surprising given Aviv’s pitch: buy the vehicles first, and leave the charging to us. It’s a bit of a pivot from the startup’s first offering, which was mobile EV charging. The company had partnered with AllState to help stranded EV drivers, for example. Now, SparkCharge offers what it calls “charging-as-a-service.” Fleets sign a deal with the startup to buy electricity on a per-kilowatt-hour basis, and SparkCharge make charing happen. Berkeley, CA | June 5 REGISTER NOW In the seven years since, fast charging has dramatically improved, but it’s not evenly distributed. “There’s a lot of fleets out there that are like, ‘Hey, I’m in middle of America. Hey, I’m in different parts of the coast,’” Aviv said. In many cases, those customers have a large volume of EVs moving through the facility that need to be charged daily. That includes ports, railheads, or automotive manufacturers. “Usually these operations are happening 24/7,” Aviv said. “They want to get these cars charged, but back out on the road.” Even in regions that have plenty of fast chargers, many fleets want their own to control when to charge. But building depot charging can be expensive and delayed by long grid interconnection queues. “Basically, we can come in service all their vehicles, charge all their vehicles, and they don’t have to worry about grid delays, connection. They don’t have to worry about any of that trenching, digging, tunneling, the construction,” Aviv said. In many cases, SparkCharge turns to mobile chargers powered by batteries or generators, which Aviv said can run on propane, natural gas, or hydrogen. The startup can either drop the equipment off and let the customer handle charging, or it can offer “white glove” service where SparkCharge handles all aspects of charging, including plugging in. As customer’s operations grow, the company can help them transition to permanent charging infrastructure. So far, 95% of the SparkCharge’s customers use its off-grid chargers, Aviv said. Costs depend on the customer and the size of the fleet, he said, but typically run between 35 cents to 60 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is competitive with many public fast chargers. “If a fleet uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours, then they only pay for that 1,000 kilowatt-hours. If they only use five kilowatt hours, they only pay for five kilowatt-hours,” he said. “It allows the fleet to really be nimble and flexible with their how they’re charging their cars. If they see a big uptick, then that’s fine, right? They’re covered. If they have a low season, that’s fine. They’re covered.”
