Popular battle royale game Fortnite has finally returned to the U.S. App Store amid game maker Epic Games’ lengthy legal skirmish with Apple. As of Tuesday, Fortnite is also available on the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the EU. It’ll show up in App Store searches soon, Epic said in a post on X. Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store in 2020 after Epic added an option for people to make in-game purchases using Epic’s virtual currency, for which the company offered a 20% discount. Epic then went on the offensive and sued Apple. A judge ruled in Epic’s favor, finding that Apple was in “willful violation” of rules that bar anticompetitive pricing. Last month, that judge said Apple must allow developers to collect payments outside the App Store and not levy fees on them. Following the ruling, Epic resubmitted Fortnite to the App Store — but faced an approval delay. The company accused Apple of blocking the game from going live in the U.S. and EU. Earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said in a filing that Apple should approve Epic’s submission or show it had a legal basis to block it. That possibly tilted things in Epic’s favor.

Luminar, the lidar company founded by recently replaced CEO Austin Russell, is going through another restructuring, according to a recent regulatory filing. This new round of layoffs, which the company did not provide figures for, follows extensive cuts to the workforce in 2024. Luminar cut about 30% of its workforce in 2024, a reduction that was expected to cost $4 million to $6 million in additional cash charges. Some of those layoffs spilled into the first quarter of 2025. A total of 212 employees were laid off. In its latest regulatory filing, the company said it began additional layoffs May 15. These new layoffs are expected to cost $4 million to $5 million in cash charges. These costs are expected to be incurred in the second and third quarters of this year. The layoffs are the latest complication for Luminar. Earlier this month, the company’s board replaced Russell as CEO and board chair. The board issued a press release saying he resigned as the result of an ethics inquiry without providing any additional information. Luminar’s board replaced Russell and appointed Paul Ricci to the role. Ricci is the former chairman and CEO of Nuance. A day after the leadership change was announced, board member Jun Hong Heng also resigned, according to a regulatory filing, which stated his decision was not due to any disagreements with the company on any matter relating to the company’s operations, policies, or practices. The company has not responded to requests for comment. Russell became a billionaire after his lidar startup Luminar went public in 2021 after the company merged with special purpose acquisition company Gores Metropoulos Inc., with a post-deal market valuation of $3.4 billion. Luminar raised $250 million prior to the SPAC announcement. Google co-founder Sergey Brin said he “made a lot of mistakes with Google Glass” during an onstage interview at Google I/O 2025 on Tuesday. Brin was a surprise addition to an interview with Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis conducted by Big Technology Podcast’s Alex Kantrowitz. Brin went on to say he “didn’t know anything about consumer electronic supply chains,” or how difficult it would be to build smart glasses at a reasonable price point. The Google co-founder noted he’s a big believer in the form factor of smart glasses, and said he’s glad the company is pursuing them yet again, this time with “great partners who are helping us build this.” Earlier on Tuesday, Google unveiled its latest effort to develop Android XR smart glasses, roughly a decade after the Google Glass project shut down. Onstage, Google leaders showcased how their smart glasses, powered by DeepMind’s Project Astra, could assist with live translations, directions, and generally AI queries. To develop Android XR glasses with AI and AR capabilities, Google is working with a network of partners, such as Samsung and Xreal. Google is also investing up to $150 million in a partnership with Warby Parker, and taking an equity stake in the eyewear company, to support its smart glasses efforts. As Brin referenced, those experienced eyewear and electronics makers may be able to help with some of the supply chain problems associated with producing smart glasses. Brin noted how the advent of generative AI makes the capabilities of smart glasses much more tangible than when Google Glass was around. Earlier in the interview, Brin acknowledged how he’s effectively come out of retirement to work on Google’s Gemini efforts. Google says it will commit up to $150 million to the consumer eyewear company Warby Parker to jointly develop AI-powered smart glasses based on Android XR, the companies said on Tuesday during Google I/O 2025. Google has already committed $75 million to Warby Parker’s product development and commercialization costs, the companies said in a press release. Google says it will invest an additional $75 million, taking an equity stake in Warby Parker, should the eyewear manufacturer meet certain milestones. At Google I/O 2025, Google also announced partnerships with several companies to develop smart glasses with Gemini AI and AR capabilities, including Samsung and Gentle Monster. Google seems to be taking a page out of Meta’s smart glasses strategy. Meta has found success partnering and investing in the Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica to develop its smart glasses. Part of the reason behind Ray-Ban Meta’s success is that the smart glasses have an attractive, familiar design and they’re being sold in Ray-Ban stores. It seems likely that Google will have a similar relationship with Warby Parker, taking advantage of the eyewear company’s popular frame designs and perhaps its retail stores. In the press release, Warby Parker and Google said they intend to launch a series of products over time. Their first line of eyewear will launch “after 2025” and will incorporate multimodal AI with prescription and non-prescription glasses.
