Kentucky Capitol building closes for renovations

FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — The Kentucky Capitol is now closed to the public as a $291 million renovation gets underway.

It’s the first major overhaul of the historic building in more than 70 years.

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

The multi-year project will modernize infrastructure, fix decades of deferred maintenance, improve safety and accessibility, and revamp public and staff spaces.

Officials hope to reopen in 2029—but said the timeline could run longer.

Multiple offices will have temporary locations while the Capitol building is under renovation; a list of temporary offices can be found online.

LATEST KENTUCKY LISTS AND RANKINGS:

While the building is closed, the Capitol steps will remain available for use; people or groups will just need to apply to use them online.
