LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A judge sentenced a Caledonia woman, Sandra Baxter, to 20 hours of community service and a fine of $2,500 for providing a false statement during the Unlock Michigan campaign finance investigation. Caledonia is located southeast of Grand Rapids.

In May 2021, retired Michigan Chamber of Commerce officer Robert LaBrant filed a complaint with the Michigan Department of State’s office that alleges a “dark money scheme” to use a nonprofit to fund a ballot initiative.

Fundraising consultant pleads guilty in Unlock Michigan scandal

Baxter was a fundraising consultant who solicited funds for Michigan! My Michigan! and, in March, she admitted in court that she knowingly and willfully made a misleading statement during a criminal investigation. She pleaded guilty to providing a false statement in June.

“This plea makes clear that those who attempt to deceive investigators will be held accountable,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said. “My office remains committed to uncovering the truth and prosecuting individuals who obstruct justice.”

Baxter was initially charged with perjury in February 2024.
