Fire tears through auto repair shop, home in Washington County

Firefighters battled a fire at an auto repair shop and home in Washington County Thursday morning.

Officials said the call for the fire at Horne’s Auto Service on Route 980 in Cecil Township came in around 5:30 a.m. Cecil Fire Chief Ted Wolford said crews were on the scene within five minutes.

Viewer video sent to Channel 11 shows flames engulfing the building shortly after the fire broke out.

Wolford said two people were inside and got out safely.

A neighbor saw the flames and ran over to help get everyone out, including pets.

“Compared to what I did, the real heroes are the first responders,” said Kenny Chwilka.

Chief Wolford said that with a site like an auto shop with unknown fluids, extra precautions were taken.

“Washington County’s Hazmat team is here, they are protecting all of the drains and waterways with padding with what we call a boom, just to make sure no more of those fluids get into the drains,” Wolford said/

Absorbent booms are barriers filled with absorbent material that can be used to absorb dangerous chemicals.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
