  1. The fires that ravaged Los Angeles at the beginning of this year took 31 lives by the official count, but new research estimates there were hundreds more deaths that are attributable to the disaster. In the study, published in the medical journal JAMA on Wednesday, researchers analyzed data on the number of deaths in Los Angeles County from Jan. 5 to Feb. 1, 2025 — the period when the Palisades and Eaton fires tore though the city — and estimated that 440 more deaths could be attributed to the fires, compared to the expected number based on data from previous years. These additional deaths likely reflect a combination of factors, including increased exposure to poor air quality, which may exacerbate heart or lung conditions, the authors say. They also point to the impact of delays or interruptions in people's access to necessary health care during that period. "The findings from this study underscore the need to complement direct fatalities estimates with alternative methods to quantify the additional mortality burden of wildfires and of climate-related emergencies more broadly," the authors wrote. "They also highlight the need for improved mortality surveillance during and after wildfire emergencies." The study did have some limitations, including some provisional data, and it did not account for deaths that may have occurred after Feb. 1. The authors suggest future research should look into the longer-term impacts of the wildfires as more data becomes available. They also urged more research into the causes contributing to excess deaths related to wildfires. 2 years after Maui wildfires, studies find more health impacts The JAMA Network also published two studies Wednesday examining the health impacts of the Maui wildfires, which devastated the island in August 2023. In one study, researchers found substantial heart, lung and psychological health issues among a group of adults affected by the wildfires. Among the more than 1,000 study participants, nearly 63% had high blood pressure, nearly 50% reported depressive symptoms and about 22% exhibited FEV, or "forced expiratory volume," a measure of lung function. Additionally, researchers found that members of the study group who resided within the fire perimeter had "significantly lower lung function" compared with those outside it. A higher level of social support was associated with improved mental health outcomes, but researchers found it did not appear to improve physiological conditions like reduced lung function. "As climate-driven disasters intensify, proactive strategies to monitor and mitigate their long-term health effects will be essential to protect vulnerable populations and enhance resilience," the authors wrote. Another study focused on suicides and overdoses in the wake of the disaster. That research found that the fires did have an immediate effect on these types of deaths both in Maui and across Hawaii. Using data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics from January 2014 through December 2023, researchers found the fires were associated with a 46% increase in the suicide and overdose death rate in all of Hawaii in August 2023, relative to other months, and a 97% increase that month in Maui alone. During the 120-month study period, August 2023 accounted for both Maui's and other Hawaiian counties' highest monthly combined suicide and overdose death rate. The authors note these findings highlight the importance of "rapidly deploying suicide and overdose prevention interventions during wildfire response and recovery phases," including interventions that reach beyond directly-impacted areas. 3. View the full article
View the full article

  10. (NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has said the United States remains focused on providing humanitarian relief in Gaza, amid reports that Israel is considering further expanding military operations in the region. On Tuesday, Trump was questioned whether he would support Israel reoccupying all of Gaza. “We are there now, trying to get people fed. As you know, $60 million was given by the United States fairly recently to supply food,” Trump said. “As far as the rest of it, I really can’t say. That’s going to be pretty much up to Israel.” ‘Possibly starvation’ in Gaza, Huckabee says after aid site visit Reports of a potential complete Israeli takeover of the Gaza Strip have been growing despite international outrage over the worsening hunger crisis and calls for a ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a three-hour security discussion Tuesday in which the options were presented for proceeding with the campaign in Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry, which is run by Hamas, reported that more than 61,000 people have died from the war so far and that 188 people have died from starvation in Gaza. Of those 188 deaths, the ministry said half were children. Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff have reportedly discussed plans for the U.S. to potentially “take over” management of the humanitarian efforts in Gaza, according to Axios. 11. More than 100 people are missing and at least four people have died after flash floods swept through the village of Dharali, in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. Teams from the army and disaster response forces are operating in the area to rescue people trapped under debris, local authorities have said. “A massive mudslide struck Dharali village in the Kheer Gad area near Harsil, triggering a sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement,” the Central Command of the Indian Army said in a post on X. Flash floods in Uttarkashi, where Dharali is situated, were triggered by intense rainfall known as a “cloudburst”, which caused the Kheerganga river to swell, at around 1:30pm local time (08:00 GMT) on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy rainfall will continue for the next few days. (Al Jazeera)What is a cloudburst?A cloudburst is an intense downpour that delivers a large volume of rain in a short time. It is often accompanied by thunder and hail and can cause flash floods. At any given time, clouds blanket about 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. Cloudbursts are often associated with cumulonimbus clouds, which contain large amounts of water. (Al Jazeera)The IMD said that over the past 24 hours, extreme rainfall of 21cm (8.3 inches) or more had been recorded in parts of northwest India, including Uttarakhand, where the flash floods happened – more than the 10cm (3.9 inches) of rain per hour required to be classed as a cloudburst, according to the IMD. Cloudbursts tend to occur over a small geographical region of 20 to 30 square kilometres (7.7 to 11.6 square miles) Is this caused by climate change?Uttarakhand, which has a large amount of mountainous and often unstable terrain, is prone to monsoon-related flooding. Dharali village is nestled in the Himalayas between the villages of Harsil and Gangotri. Uttarakhand is particularly vulnerable to climate change given the fragility of the Himalayan region. In particular, it is exposed to excessive precipitation, cloudbursts, flood events and periods of very cold weather (cold waves), according to a study published in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction. That study found that districts in higher regions are more exposed to these effects because of their inability to adjust to weather-related and climate changes and because the ecosystems in these areas are more sensitive to such changes. Experts say global warming will cause mountain temperatures to rise faster than the global average. Catastrophic flooding that has historically affected Uttarakhand will become more common as rising temperatures lead to hastening glacier melting, such as the Gangotri, the glacier that is closest to Dharali. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, rising temperatures in the Himalayas will ultimately reduce the size of glaciers, resulting in a reduction in the long-term availability of water for agriculture, people and power systems. It will also cause more solar energy absorption – accelerating the effects of global warming – because areas of glacial melting will be replaced by water or land, and the amount of light currently reflected by existing glaciers will decrease. 12. Large parts of Dresden's Old Town were evacuated on Wednesday as experts sought to defuse an unexploded World War II bomb found during clearance work for a collapsed bridge. Some 17,000 people were asked to leave their homes in the eastern German city, authorities said. The affected area includes the famous Frauenkirche, a church that was rebuilt brick-for-brick after being destroyed in the war, as well as several hotels. The Carola Bridge, one of Dresden's main Elbe river crossings, partly collapsed in the middle of the night in September 2024. Around 80 years after the war, Germany remains littered with unexploded ordnance, often uncovered during construction work. Over 20,000 people were evacuated from central Cologne in June after three unexploded U.S. bombs from World War II were found, the biggest such operation in the city since the end of the war. City authorities said that the discovered unexploded ordnances were two American 20-ton bombs and one American 10-ton bomb, each with impact fuses. The heart of the city was left deserted, with a hospital, two old people's homes, nine schools and a TV studio evacuated. The bomb found in Dresden was British-made and weighs 250 kilograms, according to city authorities. In March, a World War II bomb was found near the tracks of Paris' Gare du Nord station. In February, more than 170 bombs were found near a children's playground in northern England. And in October 2024, a World War II bomb exploded at a Japanese airport. 14. My favorite part of a comic book series is the villain. To be clear, I don’t subscribe to the typical philosophies they espouse. We could have a debate about whether Thanos was right or not. But they can drive our heroes to greatness. Plus, they have the better one-liners. Heath Ledger’s Joker ("Why So Serious?") remains at the top of my list, but I’ll go from Gotham City to Central City and give props to this Captain Cold quote from The Flash. “There are only four rules you need to remember: make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan.” There’s nothing wrong with entering a fantasy football draft knowing which QB you want. But there might be 11 other people with the same thought. So, I’ll add a fifth rule to Leonard Snart’s list: be ready to improvise. And if you have an idea of what to look for in each phase of the draft, you won’t panic when your plan (inevitably) goes off the rails. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Taking a QB in the Early RoundsPros: Weekly upside at the highest-scoring position in fantasy football Cons: Sacrificing opportunity cost at WR or RB Let me guess. You drafted Justin Herbert, C.J. Stroud, or Trevor Lawrence last year and got burned. Your favorite analyst (me) told you to wait, Jordan Love looked like a fine option, and then you missed the playoffs. Meanwhile, the person who autodrafted Josh Allen in the second round got to enjoy his weekly highlights. It’s no secret. Mobile QBs are a cheat code. Ten rushing yards gets you a point. You need 25 (or 20) passing yards for the same result. So, yes, I’ll take the passer with the ability to generate fantasy production faster with his legs. And, as recent history has indicated, pocket passers have a hard time fighting for the QB1 spot without some contributions on the ground. 2024: Lamar Jackson, 2nd (in QB rushing rate; designed rushes, plus scrambles) 2023: Josh Allen, 4th 2022: Patrick Mahomes, 15th 2021: Josh Allen, 4th 2020: Josh Allen, 4th But at the same time, we have other positions to fill. We start a total of at least five players between RB and WR each week. And with bye weeks and the chaos of the season, we’ll be swapping them in and out of lineups every day. Accordingly, we need more of them. Plus, by using the results from 2024 as a proxy, we can see that the longer we wait, the harder it is to find star talent. Round 1: 17.6 (WR PPR PPG), 17.4 (RB PPR PPG) Round 2: 15.9, 13.4 Round 3: 13.1, 16.0 Round 4: 13.3, 17.6 Round 5: 13.1, 15.1 Round 6: 14.6, 10.8 I shouldn’t expect to find Ja’Marr Chase output at Courtland Sutton’s ADP. Consequently, a detour to snag a QB comes at a cost. But if your plan involves an elite QB, tiers can help get one on your roster in an optimal manner. I’ll use the regular-season MVP and Super Bowl MVP as examples. Josh Allen: 21.1 (Yahoo ADP), 22.3 (FPPG), 17.4% (Rushing Rate) Jalen Hurts: 33.9, 21.0, 29.5% The “rushing QB” tier has four guys: Jayden Daniels, Jackson, Hurts, and Allen. You’d be happy with any of them. But look at the difference in draft cost between the last two. It’s a full round! So by grouping passers by archetype, I can get through the early rounds without overpaying for the type of QB I planned to draft. Other Early-Round Targets: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs; Bo Nix, Broncos Drafting a Passer in the Mid-RoundsPros: Allows for building a strong core with a top-10 passer Cons: Potential for overvaluing the wrong traits Let’s say there was a run on the early QBs, you timed out while trying to click on Joe Burrow, and you’re now in the middle rounds. It happens. Well, throw away your original plan and let’s improvise. The good news is you’ve got most of a starting roster put together. Regardless of your strategy (e.g., Hero RB, Zero RB, etc.), there’s no shortage of top-12 and top-24 skill players. Swap out an RB or WR for an early-round TE and you’re cooking with gas. Even better, the opportunity cost we discussed before has less of an impact in this stretch of the draft. Round 7: 13.2 (WR PPR PPG), 9.1 (RB PPR PPG) Round 8: 10.2, 9.2 Round 9: 10.6, 7.3 Round 10: 13.6, 8.8 Round 11: 12.2, 9.2 Round 12: 10.1, 9.2 But still, we need a quarterback. Eight are likely already off the board. And I’ll be honest. I tend to panic when thrown off my game and start to feel that slight twinge of urgency. My default is to copy and paste what I was going to do before. We prioritized rushing earlier. Let’s do it now. However, in doing so, you can fixate on a player without considering the alternatives. I’ll give you an example. Before Jets fans come for me, I agree with the last sentence. Justin Fields still has time to turn things around. However, the lack of competition behind Fields and his history as a rusher have pushed his cost into make-or-break territory. 2024: 8.9 (Rushing FPPG), 2nd (amongst all starting QBs) 2023: 6.9, 4th 2022: 10.8, 1st 2021: 4.5, 7th There’s no question about Fields’s talent as a runner. We’ve seen it in spurts over the years. But the passing production still has to be a part of his weekly floor. And let’s set aside any (potential) red flags about the passing game. Nevermind that, now-OC Tanner Engstrand either didn’t go with then-OC Ben Johnson to Chicago or get the vacant job in Detroit. Or, if Engstrand pulls elements from the Lions’ passing game into the Jets’ playbook (i.e., heavy play action), Fields struggled to maintain any viable level of efficiency (29th in success rate on play-action concepts on early downs). Forget all that. Fields is the guy. However, you could wait a few more rounds and find a similar guy. Justin Fields: 84.7 (Yahoo ADP), 9.8% (Scramble Rate), 184.3 (Passing YPG) Drake Maye: 121.1, 10.6%, 187.8 Of course, Maye doesn’t have the same ceiling potential. But New England’s offseason moves point to a more stable floor at a three-round discount. Regardless, I work through the same exercise I outlined in the early rounds. Contextualize a player and identify alternatives with comparable traits. Maybe you don’t like Maye. Try Kyler Murray, who might rush more this season and is a round cheaper than Fields. Either way, the result nets me a passer with rushing upside along with a strong roster. Other Mid-Round Targets: Dak Prescott, Cowboys; Jordan Love, Packers Dropping in a QB from the Late RoundsPros: Enables a packed roster with starters and depth Cons: Relies on the rest of the team to perform Drafting a QB from the late rounds requires a walk down Narrative Street. We don’t refer to this crop of signal callers as “matchup-based starters” for no reason. Their warts are varied and numerous. Making matters worse, the season-long hit rate from last year exemplifies the minefield you enter waiting until this phase of the draft to find your guy. Justin Herbert: QB16 (PPG Finish) Aaron Rodgers: QB21 Kirk Cousins: QB33 (in 14 games) Matthew Stafford: QB32 Baker Mayfield: QB3 Deshaun Watson: QB40 (in 7 games) To be fair, Bo Nix (QB23 by ADP), Maye (QB30), and Sam Darnold (QB31) also had late (read non-existent) draft costs. But for every Darnold, there was a Will Levis or Derek Carr nearby. By and large, we can’t rely on them for the entirety of the season. Luckily, we shouldn’t need them that long. Our other starters can carry the load. By the 13th round, you should have an army of RB1s and top-12 WRs with a can’t-miss TE. All you need are pockets of production from a QB. A rundown of the early-season schedules should uncover a few options. Yes, I know. Throwing catches to receivers running routes against air doesn’t matter. But the Jaguars adding another pass-catching option in Travis Hunter for Lawrence should. His Week 1 matchup against the Panthers, who gave up 20 or more points to opposing QBs in seven games in 2024, should matter, too. However, Lawrence isn’t the only beneficiary of a soft opener. Michael Penix Jr. and Bryce Young both face either weak defensive units or opposing offenses that can force up-tempo contests. And each has the surrounding cast to fight back. Accordingly, by examining the schedule throughout the preseason as we learn more about each offense, you can find the best option to lead your team into 2025. 17. PARIS (AP) — France’s biggest wildfire this summer was spreading quickly Wednesday in a Mediterranean region near the Spanish border after leaving one person dead, authorities said. The fire had burned an area larger than Paris. About 2,000 firefighters and several water bomber aircraft battled the blaze that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region, a rural, wooded area that is home to wineries. The fire, which has burned 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres), remained ‘’very active'' on Wednesday, the local administration said in a statement. The weather was hot, dry and windy, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze. One person died in their home, and at least 13 others were injured, including 11 firefighters, local authorities said. One person who was initially described as missing has been located and is safe. Jacques Piraux, mayor of the village of Jonquières, said all residents have been evacuated. “It’s a scene of sadness and desolation," he told broadcaster BFM TV after he visited Wednesday morning. “It looks like a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It’s hellish.” Residents and tourists in nearby areas were requested to remain in their homes unless told to evacuate. Two campsites were evacuated as a precaution. French Prime Minister François Bayrou met Wednesday afternoon with firefighters and residents at Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, where the fire service's command post has been set up. The environment ministry said the Aude region has been experiencing a drought this month, with water use restrictions in place. Lack of rainfall in recent months “played a major role in the spreading of the fire, since the vegetation is very dry,” the statement said. Southern Europe has seen multiple large fires this summer. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires. Last month, a wildfire that reached the southern port of Marseille, France’s second-largest city, left around 300 people injured. Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed of the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. 18. CAIRO (Reuters) -Syria signed 12 investment deals worth $14 billion on Wednesday in a ceremony attended by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, including infrastructure, transportation and real estate projects aimed at reviving the war-damaged economy. The agreements included a $4 billion deal for building a new airport in Damascus signed with Qatar's UCC holding, and a $2 billion deal to establish a subway in the Syrian capital with the UAE's national investment corporation. Other major developments include the $2 billion Damascus Towers project signed with Italy-based UBAKO. In July, Syria signed $6.4 billion of investments with Saudi Arabia as it seeks to rebuild after a 14-year civil war. 19. OSLO (Reuters) -Norway's ruling Labour Party government and its left-leaning allies are favourites to win next month's parliamentary election, albeit with a reduced majority of seats in what is likely to be a narrow vote, an opinion poll showed on Wednesday. Labour Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, who governs in a minority with support from smaller parties, hopes to secure a second four-year term in office and prevent the populist right-wing Progress Party or the Conservatives from taking power. In a surprise move, Stoere in February named former NATO boss and ex-prime minister Jens Stoltenberg as his minister of finance, bolstering Labour's standing in the polls among voters concerned by the war in Ukraine and turmoil in global trade. Labour and smaller groups on the left look set to win 88 seats in the 169-seat assembly, down from 100 in 2021 but ahead of the 81 seats seen for the centre-right opposition, the poll by the Opinion agency for ABC Nyheter and Altinget showed. Labour's support in the July 28-August 3 poll stood at 26.7%, in line with the 26.3% it won in 2021 and ahead of the Progress Party, which seeks tax cuts and lower immigration, on 23.6% and the centre-right Conservatives on 15.8%. Norway shares a near-200 km (120 mile) Arctic border with Russia, and the prime minister believes the war in Ukraine has made Norwegians concerned. "The impact of war being fought out there is making a deep impression on people," Stoere told a roundtable with foreign correspondents in May. Topics expected to influence the September 8 election also include the economy, education and healthcare, analysts have said. But unlike in some European countries, none of the parties that are expected to win seats have sought the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump or his movement. 20. To seventh-grade Oliviyah Edwards, it was a dunk. Many categorized it as a rim-graze. In retrospect, she knows they’re right. That wasn’t a dunk in the first breakout video. But every one since then fits the bill. Candace Parker knows it. Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley have seen it. And the best NCAA Division I programs in the country want it in their gym. Edwards, five years removed from a move that can promptly put girls basketball players on the national map, is the No. 2-ranked recruit by ESPN in the 2026 class. While her dunking ability makes headlines and Parker’s Instagram page, her all-around game brings Mulkey, Staley and the nation’s best coaches to recruit. The 6-foot-3 forward is coveted for her athleticism, strength, defensive versatility and footwork in the paint, plus an expanding shooting range that makes her one of the most versatile in the nation. In a November list of best recruits that included the 2025 class, the five-star prospect nicknamed “Big O” came in at fifth. She's fielded dozens of offers from Division I programs dating back to middle school. She trimmed her finalists from 10 down to USC, South Carolina, Tennessee, LSU, Washington and Florida, Edwards exclusively told Yahoo Sports. She is leaning towards one, but wants to take official visits before an announcement closer to November, she said. “I'm going to keep an open mindset, and then after that, I'm going to make my decision, and that'll be that,” Edwards told Yahoo Sports. The Tacoma, Washington, native previously considered Notre Dame, Duke, Florida State and North Carolina. All except Florida and Washington ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll of the 2024-25 season. When she chooses a school and arrives on campus next summer, “that’s when I’m really gonna blossom and grow into who I’m really supposed to be as an athlete,” she said. “And that’s when you’re really gonna see the monster in me, because I’ll be pushed to that ability.” Ahead of her senior high school season, she’ll return to Overtime Select this month as captain of Venom Tears, coached by Tennessee’s three-time champion Chamique Holdsclaw. Edwards won Queen of the Court honors in the league’s inaugural season a year ago. The eight-team league provides an opportunity to play with the nation’s best and create connections with future teammates and opponents at the next levels. Autumn Fleary (No. 3 ranked point guard in 2026) and Eve Long (No. 9 recruit, 2027) will also play for Venom, which begins action on Saturday. Edwards has already bloomed far from her non-basketball roots. As one of the top prospects in the country, she’s more than a girl who dunks. Even though she’d like to do it more. Edwards viewed herself as a wrestler above all else. And there was plenty of “else.” Rock climbing, football and soccer. Afternoons of neighborhood Nerf tag that bled into the night. At the start of sixth grade, she began to develop knee pain while doing certain wrestling moves. Her mom, Jordan West, suggested basketball, an activity Edwards played minimally at school recess. They went to a tryout of Hard Work Beats Talent, the nonprofit AAU program in Tacoma where West's boyfriend, Zach Carter, coached teams in fourth through eighth grade. The foray was nearly short-lived. It was so hard to watch Edwards struggling to keep up with a dribbling drill, she said her mother didn’t want to bring her back. She would trip over her own feet up and down the court, West said. Even though Edwards lacked handles, Carter caught glimpses of potential every time she chased down a lose ball and tried again. The athletic gifts were clear, and the boys marveled at her height. She was the only girl in the program. “Yeah, watch this,” she recalled telling them at one practice. She lifted upward and grabbed the rim. “That’s where it all started,” she said. As she developed more bounce, she decided to try it on her outdoor hoop one workout. It went in, and even though it wasn’t regulation, “it was the first time I was like, OK, I can get up there, because it’s still pretty high,” she said. Oliviyah Edwards goes up for the layup during the State Farm Queen of the Court Takeover on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at OTE Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Adam Hagy/Overtime) (Adam Hagy/Overtime)The team of fifth-grade boys played up a grade to sixth with Edwards on the team until March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down. Schools in Washington state closed for 15 months, forcing Edwards to miss in-person life as a seventh-grader. Carter ran workouts with the couple’s four kids in the interim. “He had the hurdles,” Edwards said. “We had the ladders out. We were running hills. Literally, like, no excuses, every day, we’re just getting at it. And so that’s really what got me good.” Edwards said that given the lack of organized basketball and in-person interactions, “no one expected” the talent she brought to the court out of the pandemic’s shutdown. She joined the Northwest Greyhounds of the adidas 3SSB circuit after Carter ran into the coach at the local park one day, West said. In the span of less than two years, Edwards transitioned from a wrestler lacking ball-handling skills to a recruit dunking on a WNBA icon’s phone. In the summer before her eighth-grade year, she slammed down the rim-grazing bucket at a local tournament in Centralia, Washington. Parker, whose own dunk at the age of 15 spread widely before the days of social media, posted it to her more than 1 million Instagram followers and reached out directly to the young future star. “I go out to places where people are like, oh, I’ve seen you on Candace Parker’s page,” said Edwards, who has since met the three-time WNBA champion. “It’s just crazy to me.” Parker is a semi-regular in the comments section, posting fire emojis and elevating above everyday fans claiming Edwards should sign with their collegiate team. “I personally see big Tennessee orange in her future,” Parker, a two-time Lady Vols champion, wrote under a post showing Edwards dunking with Mulkey, LSU’s title-winning head coach, in attendance last month. Last week, Edwards announced a Sept. 12 trip to Tennessee, where head coach Kim Caldwell sprinted the Lady Vols back into relevancy. Edwards visited Rocky Top in January for the Tennessee-LSU showdown and said she “sees a whole bunch of me’s out there” watching Caldwell’s Tennessee offense. Meanwhile, the Tigers program leaned heavily into name, image, likeness support for its players, an aspect Edwards liked. Edwards already visited USC, which received a commitment from No. 1 recruit Saniyah Hall in July, and said she liked the teammates with whom she’d play. Edwards played for Naismith National Player of the Year JuJu Watkins this summer in the OT Select Takeover event, an All-Star-type weekend for the company. Watkins tore her ACL in March and will miss most, if not all, of the upcoming NCAA season. The scheduled preseason trips consist of Florida (Sept. 5), South Carolina (Sept. 19), Washington (Sept. 26) and LSU (Oct. 10). At South Carolina, Staley will “work me hard and bring out that beast I’m talking about,” Edwards said. Both Washington and Florida felt right to Edwards, with the former being close to home, she said. In May, adidas announced Edwards among its 2025 class of name, image, likeness deals. Parker is the company’s president of women’s basketball. The connection isn't lost on Edwards, who noted that Tennessee is reportedly returning to adidas beginning in 2026. On the 3SSB adidas circuit, Carter, who took over coaching when Edwards reached 17U, wanted Edwards to develop into “the most versatile player in her class,” West said in an email, after he felt she was being pigeonholed by other coaches into playing traditional center minutes. Edwards made sure to dunk in her final Greyhounds game this summer, racking up attempts to finally notch one. She intends to slam one in OT Select, where she can work into a flow of dunking more often. They come mostly on fast breaks, typically the case in the women’s game, as she learns how to attack the rim with defenders around her. The women’s game has long been dinged for its lack of play above the rim, even if it is often a disingenuous argument. As more athletic players develop the skill, that will naturally change. Those who dunk consistently push the game forward, as athletes with rare skillsets are still outsized draws. “I used to not think about it, but now that the game is evolving, I do think I want to see myself — I do want to dunk more,” Edwards said. “I do. I do think it'll make women's basketball watchable too. I think I see people talking about how, like, oh, women don't do this. This is why we watch men's and I just feel like, if I can bring more eyes to women's basketball, I feel like that gives more opportunity to everybody.” More players than ever before are dunking as college prospects, and once they hit college. The list of women’s players to dunk in an NCAA Division I game has grown quickly since Edwards attended her first basketball tryout. South Carolina 6-3 forward Ashlyn Watkins has three since 2022. Francesca Belibi, a 6-1 forward, came into Stanford known for that skill set. The last to have done it before the active era was Brittney Griner, a 6-8 Baylor star from 2009-13. Sylvia Fowles (6-6, LSU), Parker (6-4, Tennessee), Sancho Lyttle (6-5, Houston) and Michelle Snow (6-5, Tennessee) all threw one down in college in the 2000s. Georgeann Wells, a 6-foot-6 West Virginia center, was the first to dunk in the 1980s, and North Carolina’s 6-foot forward Charlotte Smith did it in the early 1990s. In the WNBA’s 29-year history, a total of eight players dunked a combined 38 times — none more than Griner, who crushes the competition with 27. Parker, Lisa Leslie, Fowles and Liz Cambage each have two. The league is on dunk watch for 2025 No. 2 draft pick Dominique Malonga, a 6-6 French phenom. Edwards is among the crop of incoming talents with dunking potential. The WNBA is in the future almost as far as her basketball start is in the past. And while it's still unclear where she'll begin her college career next fall, one thing's for certain: she'll be there, elevating above the rim, drawing even more eyes to the women's game. 21. We were all waiting for the ball to drop and finally got the news — Minnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison suspended three games for DUI citation back in 2024. This news was somewhat baked into a lot of fantasy football analysis surrounding Addison going into the 2025 NFL season. But now that we have how many games the wideout will miss, we can plan accordingly. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Yahoo fantasy football analysts Matt Harmon and Scott Pianowski broke down the suspension and how to approach drafting Addison on the latest episode of The Yahoo Fantasy Forecast episode. After bursting onto the scene as a rookie in 2023, Addison took a slight step back production-wise last season. He finished his rookie season with 70 catches on 108 targets for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns, good for WR21 overall. That came with a mixed bag at QB; Kirk Cousins, Nick Mullens, Joshua Dobbs and Jaren Hall all played that season. Last year with Sam Darnold under center, Addison finished with 63 catches on 99 targets for 875 yards and nine TDs, still a strong finish as the WR20. Going into this season, the Vikings will again have a new QB — J.J. McCarthy. He's had plenty of time to build chemistry with Addison but we also don't know what type of QB he'll be in the NFL. Pianowski, someone who believes it's important to get off to a hot start in fantasy, has his concerns over drafting Addison. Right now on Yahoo, Addison's ADP is at 92.1, which would mean he's getting selected around the 7-8 round in 12-team formats. Addison has also been dropped to WR39 in Yahoo's consensus rankings. Scott has dropped Addison from a fringe WR2/3 to more of a WR3/4 option in fantasy formats going into this season. View the full article

“Me levanto gracias a ella. View the full article
