  6. Range Rover SV Carbon Edition Cuts Weight And Costs More originally appeared on Autoblog. Range Rover's Favorite Place For Special EditionsSince the pandemic, very few auto extravaganzas of any description have survived (RIP, Geneva Motor Show), and still fewer have thrived. Among them are certainly the BMW-backed Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance, Lord March's Goodwood Festival of Speed, and California's Monterey Car Week. One of the brands that has made America's best gathering of high-end automotive art its home is the luxury SUV arm of JLR, with the Range Rover House overlooking Monterey Bay playing host to Range Rover's closest customers each year, usually with a new special edition close at hand. For 2025, that special edition will be the Range Rover Sport SV Carbon, and its paint is just as stunning as its setting. Before we take a closer look, it's worth mentioning that this is the third of a set of triplets, following the SV Nocturne and SV Black, which may or may not appear in Monterey too. Carbon And "Curated" PaintLand Rover View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article The SV Premium Palette is open to customers of this new special edition, but so are four additional options. Annoyingly, Range Rover hasn't said what these are, though we hope to see them all in the sun from this weekend. We do know the carbon-ceramic brake option can be had in a choice of blue, yellow, Carbon Bronze, or black. These sit behind 23-inch carbon fiber wheels that save some 167 pounds of unsprung weight. More carbon fiber from the standard Forged Carbon Exterior Pack comes in the form of sheaths for the quad exhaust tips, (optionally) exposed areas of the carbon fiber hood, and inserts for the front splitter and front grille surround. Like the other Range Rover SVs we've seen to date, this one features a BMW-sourced 4.4-liter S63 twin-turbocharged V8 developing 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, making the most powerful Range Rover ever capable of a top speed of 180 mph. Luxurious Interior AwaitsLand Rover View the 5 images of this gallery on the original article With 6D Dynamics Suspension, this Range Rover will handle in a remarkably natural manner without compromising refinement or comfort, something that sets the SV apart from many other high-performance SUVs with adaptive suspension. If acceleration isn't what you're in the mood for, JLR's Body and Soul Seat (BASS) system gives those in the front row seats that let them "feel" the sound from their perforated Windsor Leather perches, which can be upholstered in Ebony, Rosewood and Ebony, or Light Cloud and Ebony. Cinder Grey and Ebony upholstery is also available as a leather-free option made from Ultrafabrics material. Other fancy touches include forged or twill carbon seatbacks and dashboard trims, Moonlight Chrome detailing, and illuminated treadplates. Disappointingly, there's no information available for the U.S. market, but in the United Kingdom, the Range Sport SV Carbon costs £165,045, or around $219,630 at current exchange rates. By comparison, the most expensive RRS in the States is the Range Sport SV Edition Two, which starts at $180,700 but is missing loads of carbon and doesn't have leather seats as standard, among other things. Monterey Car Week will host the SV Carbon's global debut from August 8-17, 2025. Perhaps we'll see the first application of Range Rover's new logo there, too. 7. Ford Launches Hot 2025 Bronco Sport Lease Deal For August originally appeared on Autoblog. A fresh lease on adventureThe Ford Bronco Sport continues to stand out in the crowded crossover market. It’s compact, boxy, and—unlike many of its competitors—actually built with real off-road capability. For August, Ford is making it easier to slide behind the wheel of one with a new lease deal that requires very little upfront cash. This month, Ford is offering a lease on the 2025 Bronco Sport Big Bend trim that combines low commitment at signing with a straightforward monthly payment. For drivers who want something that balances daily driving comfort with genuine trail-ready DNA, the Bronco Sport remains one of the more unique options in the segment. Details of Ford’s August lease offerFord’s August special applies to the 2025 Bronco Sport Big Bend. The terms call for $399 per month for 36 months, with just $399 due at signing. Taxes, title, and license fees are extra, but Ford is waiving the security deposit and sweetening the deal with a complimentary two-year maintenance plan. 2025 Ford Bronco SportFordThat makes the Bronco Sport a tempting alternative to more conventional compact SUVs. The low amount due upfront should appeal to shoppers who want to minimize out-of-pocket costs at signing while still getting a capable, all-wheel-drive vehicle with a rugged edge. Why the Bronco Sport stands outUnlike many small crossovers that wear adventure-inspired styling without much substance, the Bronco Sport backs up its looks with real capability. Every model comes standard with all-wheel drive and Ford’s G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Terrain) drive modes, giving drivers the flexibility to handle snow, mud, or sand. 2025 Ford Bronco SportFordThe Big Bend trim—the one featured in this month’s lease offer—adds useful everyday upgrades like heated mirrors, push-button start, and Ford’s MOLLE strap system for securing gear inside the cabin. With 17-inch wheels and rugged cladding, it looks ready for the trail, but it’s more than just cosmetics. While it’s not a replacement for the full-sized Bronco when it comes to hardcore rock crawling, the Bronco Sport is surprisingly adept on rough trails. It’s a smart middle ground for drivers who want more attitude and capability than a Subaru Forester, without stepping all the way up to a Wrangler or Bronco. Final thoughtsFord’s August Bronco Sport lease offer highlights the SUV’s mix of practicality and personality. With standard all-wheel drive, useful off-road tech, and a design that feels adventurous without being over the top, it’s an appealing choice for drivers who want more than just another city-friendly crossover. 2025 Ford Bronco SportFordIf you’ve been waiting for a lease with low upfront costs and a straightforward monthly price, August might be the right time to jump into a Bronco Sport. It may not be the largest SUV in Ford’s lineup, but right now, it’s one of the smartest to lease. *Disclaimer: This article is provided for informational purposes only. 8. Is there a supercar-shaped hole in your collection? Here’s your chance to buy one of the best in recent memory. A white 2012 Lexus LFA is currently up for bid on Bring a Trailer. Any example of the gorgeous coupe that hits the market is noteworthy, but this one, despite being over a decade old, has only 4,400 miles on the odometer. More from Robb Report Azimut's New 98-Foot Yacht Has an Infinity Pool Perched on the Upper Deck 'Emily in Paris' Star Lily Collins Just Sold Her Pasadena Case Study House for $6 Million Motorola and Swarovski Teamed Up for a Crystal-Encrusted Razr Phone The LFA, to put it simply, is one of the great cars of the 21st century. The vehicle owes its existence to former-Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda to prove that his company was capable of building a sports car that could match up with the very best coming out of Europe. The resulting LFA pairs a beautiful, clean-lined design with a V-10 famed for emitting the “roar of an angel.” The car wasn’t fully appreciated at the time of its 2010 launch—perhaps due to bearing the Lexus name, as opposed to that of a traditional sports car maker—so only 500 examples were built during the two years it was in production. But now that enthusiasts have caught on to how special it is, the car has become quite the commodity. The carbon-fiber bodied LFA up for auction, chassis no. 205, is finished in white, a color that shows off the grace of Kengo Matsumoto’s design. It rides on a set of 20-inch double-spoke BBS alloy wheels that offer up a peak at its red Brembo brake calipers. The interior features are done up in black leather with red accents, and features power-adjustable seats and a 12-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. The LFA is a good-looking car, but its headline feature is its engine. The car is powered by a racing-derived, naturally aspirated 4.8-liter DOHC V-10. The mill is mated to a six-speed automated sequential gearbox and can produce up to 553 hp and 354 ft lbs of torque with a redline of 9,000 rpm. The car can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 203 mph, numbers this example should be capable of reaching since it has only 4,400 miles on the clock. Just be warned that this LFA will likely come at a steep price. With seven days left to go — the auction runs until Wednesday, August 13 — bidding has already reached $800,000. Examples of the car that have been sold on Bring a Trailer regularly go for more than that, so don’t be surprised to see that number climb. 9. Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, has announced she is running to be the next governor of her state. Sen. Blackburn, 73, is bidding to replace GOP incumbent Bill Lee, who is term-limited out of office. Her announcement comes exactly one year before the Republican primary vote ahead of the November 2026 election. "In his first six months, President Trump has made historic strides in Making America Great Again, but as he sends power back to the states, he’s going to need strong conservative governors who can bring that revolution home,” Blackburn said in a statement on Wednesday. “I’m running to serve as Tennessee’s next governor to ensure Tennessee is America’s conservative leader.” Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn announces her run to the state's next governor on Wednesday August 6 2025 (Marsha Blackburn/X)A social media video accompanying the announcement places Trump front and center of Blackburn’s campaign and finds the Mississippi native telling her audience: “Trump is back. America is blessed. And Tennessee, better than ever.” She promises to make the Volunteer State “America’s number one job creating, energy producing powerhouse,” to deliver “world-class” standards of education “by empowering parents, not the deep state,” and to deport illegal immigrants “whether it takes planes, trains or starships.” She further promises to honor the constitution, “value life” and “get rid of gender pronoun insanity.” Should she win, Blackburn would become the first woman to serve as Tennessee governor. She already has one challenger in the shape of Tennessee Rep. John Rose, who launched his bid earlier this year. A slew of state Republicans have already endorsed him. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was also recently linked with a run for the Tennessee governor’s mansion but has since denied having any intention to pursue political opportunities beyond the Pentagon. Blackburn started her career in media and marketing before entering the Tennessee Senate in 1999, serving four years before winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2003, representing her adopted state’s 7th district. President Donald Trump appears with then-Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn at a MAGA rally in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in November 2018 (EPA)She held that seat for 16 years before being elected senator in 2019, successfully winning re-election in 2024. Blackburn is a former Tea Party conservative known for her anti-abortion and anti-LGBT+ sentiment. She cut a memorable figure at last summer’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee when she and several other GOP lawmakers physically pursued then-Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle around the venue, demanding answers about supposed security lapses during the attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, a month earlier. Another MAGA loyalist, South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace, announced her run to be that state’s next governor on Monday. View the full article

  11. For the first time since revealing last week that the Trump administration began freezing its federal research funding, the University of California, Los Angeles has put a number on how much is at stake. And it’s far bigger than previously thought. “Currently, a total of approximately $584 million in extramural award funding is suspended and at risk,” Chancellor Julio Frenk wrote Wednesday to the university community. “If these funds remain suspended, it will be devastating for UCLA and for Americans across the nation.” The extent of UCLA’s financial challenge comes as the Trump administration – citing a wish to quell what it describes as rampant antisemitism on US campuses – has inked deals with several prominent universities, including Columbia, which agreed to give the White House “relevant data” on hiring and admissions, “strengthen oversight of international students” and have an independent monitor oversee the agreement. While UCLA and the Trump administration previously declined to give a specific figure publicly for the amount of federal research money frozen, it was “greater than $300 million,” documents given to the Los Angeles Times on Friday showed. Frenk’s acknowledgment of the size of the funding freeze comes two days after a town hall with faculty and staff to discuss the financial threat that the university says drew more than 3,000 attendees. “We are doing everything we can to protect the interests of faculty, students and staff – and to defend our values and principles,” Frenk wrote. UCLA’s grants were suspended by agencies including the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. “We will not fund institutions that promote antisemitism,” a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services told CNN last week. “We will use every tool we have to ensure institutions follow the law.” UCLA in March launched its own Initiative to Combat Antisemitism and last week settled a lawsuit that accused the university of letting Jewish students get targeted and harassed during 2024 pro-Palestinian protests on campus. Still, the university continues to be the target of an antisemitism investigation by the Department of Justice. “Jewish and Israeli students at UCLA were subjected to severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive harassment that created a hostile environment by members of the encampment,” said a notice from the Civil Rights Division, asking for a “voluntary resolution” with the school. Both Columbia and Brown universities recently signed settlements with the Trump administration to restore federal grants blocked over similar claims, restoring hundreds of millions of dollars to those institutions. Harvard, which saw more than $2 billion in government funds frozen this year, is battling the Trump administration in court. The nation’s oldest and wealthiest university awaits a judge’s decision on whether the White House should be forced to release the money while also reportedly discussing its own settlement options. UCLA is keeping its options open for how to respond to the loss of funding, Frenk said. “The UC Board of Regents and the UC Office of the President are providing counsel as we actively evaluate our best course of action,” the chancellor said. 12. (Reuters) -A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected a challenge to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rule that reflects the agency's policy not to settle civil enforcement actions unless the defendants agree not to publicly deny the allegations they face. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the "gag rule" was not unconstitutional on its face, though it could violate the First Amendment if applied in a manner that prevented civil enforcement defendants from criticizing the agency. 17. The Trump administration’s next “Alligator Alcatraz” is set to open in Indiana, with officials dubbing the migrant detention facility the “Speedway Slammer.” The Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday announced it will expand the Miami Correctional Center, a state prison about 70 miles north of Indianapolis. “Today, we’re announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said. “Thanks to [Indiana Gov. Mike Braun] for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country.” Noem warned that those in the country illegally could find themselves at the “Speedway Slammer,” and urged people to self-deport instead. News of Indiana’s foray into “Alligator-Alcatraz”-like immigration detention centers comes as Noem said she hopes to open similar facilities near airports throughout the country to boost “efficiency” in deportations. She is working to fulfill President Donald Trump’s mission to increase deportations and crack down on illegal immigration in the U.S. In July, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents averaged 990 daily arrests. The Trump administration’s newest ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ will open in Indiana, as officials nickname the facility the ‘Speedway Slammer.’ (AFP/Getty)The Hoosier state facility, named for Indiana’s affinity for racing, sits about 70 miles north of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Days before officials announced the so-called “Speedway Slammer,” Braun said the state would partner with federal immigration authorities to aid deportation efforts. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana State Police, Department of Correction, and Indiana National Guard are all entering new cooperative agreements with ICE, according to WTHR. “Indiana is not a safe haven for illegal immigration. Indiana will fully partner with federal immigration authorities as they enforce the most fundamental laws of our country,” Braun said at the time. Indiana’s Miami Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison located at the former Grissom Air Force Base. It can house about 3,100 people, though officials said part of the facility has not been filled due to a staffing shortage, IndyStar reported. Critics have compared ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ to a concentration camp, as migrants detained there have reported inhumane conditions. (Getty Images)Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” opened last month after it was hastily thrown together in about two weeks. The 3,000-bed south Florida detention center has received intense criticism and comparisons to concentration camps by critics, as migrants there report inhumane conditions, including maggot-infested food, overflowing toilets and other unsafe conditions. A federal lawsuit accuses the facility of blocking detainees from legal counsel and forcing people into “overcrowded, unsanitary, and harsh conditions” with inadequate food, flood-prone cells, and “excessive use of force” from guards that sent at least one man to a hospital. The facility is expected to cost about $450 million for its first year, at roughly $245 per inmate bed per night, according to DHS. ICE spent about $187 per adult detainee per day in 2023. Upcoming state-run detention centers are expected to tap into $45 billion in new funding for ICE as part of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” DHS also noted the most recent agreement, “Speedway Slammer,” has been “fully funded” under Trump’s tax and border bill. 18. Top experts from Colorado State University released their final planned forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season on Aug. 6, including a state-by-state look at upcoming hurricane risk. Overall, the outlook maintains a prediction of a slightly above-average season of 8 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. A major hurricane has wind speeds of at least 111 mph. A "normal" year sees 14 named storms, of which seven become hurricanes. "We're keeping the forecast the same as what we predicted in early July" (16 named storms of which 8 become hurricanes), Colorado State meteorologist Phil Klotzbach told USA TODAY. This includes the four storms that have already formed. The news comes as August brings a pivot point in hurricane season and increased tropical activity in the Atlantic. Tropical Atlantic is now warm enough for hurricanesAccording to the updated forecast, the tropical Atlantic has warmed faster than normal over the past few weeks. "When the waters in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea are warmer than normal, it tends to favor an above-average season, since a hurricane’s fuel source is warm ocean water. Additionally, a warm Atlantic leads to lower atmospheric pressure and a more unstable atmosphere. Both conditions favor hurricane formation," the forecast said. "Water temperatures are pretty much warm enough everywhere in the tropical Atlantic to support hurricane formation," Klotzbach told USA TODAY. In addition, the Colorado State team anticipates "a slightly above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean for the remainder of the hurricane season." Hurricane risk by stateThe updated forecast includes a state-by-state look at hurricane risk. Those calculations predict the chances of a storm passing within 50 miles of the state. 19. Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Environmental Police shared video from the capture of Goose, the 5-foot water monitor lizard who spent nearly two weeks on the loose. Police said on social media that Goose was finally tracked Saturday to the area of Southwest Main Street in Douglas, and the lizard fled into a hole under a tree when officers arrived. "After several sneaky escape attempts and a lot of dirt, two strategic pieces of chicken were placed near the hole as bait," the post said. "Goose couldn't resist." The video shows rescuers using catch poles to wrangle the wayward reptile. "After a short but mighty tug-of-war with a very strong lizard, Goose was safely secured and placed into a container," officials wrote. Goose, who escaped from a Webster home through a second-story window July 18, is now being cared for by Rainforest Reptile Shows' Oasis Foundation, a nonprofit specialist organization that assisted with the search for the lizard. The group said Goose, who was an illegal pet, will have a new permanent home with the foundation. The lizard had previously been spotted in the Little Pond area of Thompson, Conn., about 5 miles from Webster, on July 25. Massachusetts Environmental Police later confirmed he had been seen back across the state border, in Douglas. View the full article
  20. Next week, the Florida Public Service Commission is set to hear a request from Florida Power and Light for a gargantuan $8.9 billion rate hike – the biggest in U.S. history – spread out from 2026 to 2029. That number could rise north of $10 billion if FPL is also granted authority to pass on the costs of bringing its new solar and battery projects online in 2028-29 to customers. FPL submitted the request back in February and will now present its case for the historic rate increase to the PSC on Aug. 11. The hearing, which will be broadcast live on the PSC website, should last around 10 days, according to Walt Trierweiler, who heads the Office of Public Counsel. FPL's historic rate hike: FPL customers may be forced to swallow largest utility rate hike in U.S. history Florida, on average, ranks in the bottom half of the country when comparing the average price of electricity, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), but that news offers little solace in the face of repeated jumps in prices since 2020. Across the U.S., the price of residential electricity has risen from an average of 12.76 cents per kilowatt hour in January 2020 to 17.47 cents, a 31% increase, as of May 2025. Florida saw a 27.6% increase over the same time period, rising from 11.34 cents to 14.98 cents per kilowatt hour. That’s a substantial increase when compared to the 10 years prior, between 2010 and 2020, where the price of residential energy in the U.S. rose just over 13%. "Even considering another rate increase is a slap in the face," said Pensacola resident Brandy John, who in 2021 gathered 19,000 signatures on a petition to present to the PSC when FPL took the reins from Gulf Power as Northwest Florida's electricity provider and "prices shot way up." Here’s what to know about FPL’s historic rate increase. How much will FPL bills go up under the proposed rate hike?In its request, FPL provided a look at estimated bills under the rate proposal, which shows its customers throughout the Florida Peninsula seeing a larger increase from their current bill. However, by 2029, all FPL customers would be paying the same rates. FPL has provided a calculator on its website, FPL.com/answers, that allows residential customers see how the proposal would affect their individual bills. How much will FPL bills go up in Northwest Florida under the proposed rate hike?In the Panhandle, vice president and general manager of FPL Northwest Florida J.T. Young expects rates to go up an average of 1% to 5% annually over the next four years, or about 4% to 20%. The request for the rate increase, submitted in February, would reportedly raise rates in Northwest Florida by about $3.50 for residential customers in 2026 and go up each year until customers are paying about $8.39 a month more by 2029. This is expected to represent a 20% increase to the residential monthly minimum base bill from its current level of $25 to $30 monthly. The base rate increase would be on top of other costs passed on to customers, such as fuel surcharge increases, nuclear cost recovery, environmental and energy charges, storm hardening and storm restoration recovery charges. Why is FPL asking for the rate hike? When it submitted its request back in February, FPL said the request was to help the company deliver reliable electricity and diversify its generation resources to reduce fuel costs and keep bills as low as possible. Young repeated those talking points in an interview with the News Journal this week. "We're filing on behalf of our six million customers," he said. "Overall we must be prepared for growth across the state to provide reliable services and make smart investments on behalf of our customers." In its filing, FPL says it plans to use the extra revenue to "make investments in low-cost solar and battery storage technology to complement its existing power plant fleet," which it says will protect customers from fuel price volatility. FPL credited modernizing its power plant fleet as a cost-efficient investment that has saved customers about $2.9 billion per year (about $24 per month on a typical 1,000-kWh residential customer bill) compared to an average-performing utility. What happens next?A legal proceeding to consider the rate hike goes before the Public Service Commission Aug. 11 and should last about 10 days "if everything moves along at an efficient clip," said Walt Trierweiler, who since 2023 has headed the Office of Public Counsel, an agency created by the Florida Legislature to provide legal representation to consumers in utility related matters. The hearing will be broadcast live on the PSC's website. "It's easily the most complex rate case that's ever been filed," Trierweiler said of next week's hearing. "Our part is not only trying to bring the bill down from $9.8 billion but also protecting customers from future changes, risks and unintentional consequences." How likely is FPL’s historic rate hike to pass?FPL will bring a decidedly lopsided win-loss record into next week's fight. Since 2010, when the Florida Legislature reacted to a PSC rejection of a company request for a rate hike by tossing out several sitting commissioners and installing more pliable board members, FPL has typically gotten all, or at least most, of what it has wanted. The Miami Herald reported in 2021 that FPL had emerged victorious from every major case it brought before the commission between 2012 and 2017. And in 2021 the company won a $4.868 billion base rate increase for a four-year period running through this year. 21. Earthquakes have shaken both coasts of the United States since the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 5 — rattling areas near the country’s two largest metro regions. In Southern California, a quake struck Rialto on Tuesday evening, Aug. 5, followed by two more overnight in the San Bernardino area early Wednesday, Aug. 6, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Farther north, two additional tremors were reported near Petrolia and Ferndale, also during the overnight hours. Earlier that same day, residents in parts of New York reported feeling shaking after an earthquake hit northern New Jersey. 3 quakes hit San Bernardino area in Southern CaliforniaAt around 5 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Aug. 5, a magnitude 3.5 quake with a depth of about 4 miles hit about 4 miles northwest of Rialto, California, according to USGS. Overnight, another magnitude 3.5 tremor was recorded about 3 miles southeast of Ontario at around 1 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Aug. 6. That event had a depth of around 4 miles, per USGS. An hour after that, a magnitude 3.7 quake with a roughly 6.5 mile depth hit less than 4 miles north of Lytle Creek, per USGS. All three events caused light shaking around the San Bernardino area, according to impact reports compiled by USGS, which are not scientifically verified. Impact reports from a magnitude 3.5 earthquake that struck near Rialto, California, show some shaking felt in the area. How many earthquakes struck in California early Wednesday? As of 7 a.m. local time Wednesday, Aug. 6, dozens of earthquakes had been reported in California, according to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center. At least 15 of those were minor quakes measuring less than 1.0 magnitude. The strongest so far was the 3.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Lytle Creek, just north of San Bernardino. Can earthquakes be predicted?Earthquakes are not predicted. Neither the U.S. Geological Survey, nor scientists, have predicted a major earthquake, and there's no expectation for that to change in the near future. Are earthquakes increasing? While it might seem like earthquakes are happening more often, especially with real-time alerts and widespread media coverage, the overall rate of earthquakes has remained relatively stable over time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, any year may appear more active due to improvements in technology that allow scientists to detect more small quakes than in the past — not because there are actually more earthquakes occurring. Long-term global records dating back to 1900 show that the Earth averages about 16 major earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 or greater) each year — typically 15 in the 7.0 range and one magnitude 8.0 or higher. In 2024, there were 10 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater, the strongest being a 7.5 in Japan. However, the risk of being affected by an earthquake is growing because of increasing human and economic exposure and the number of assets being built in high earthquake hazard areas, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a report in 2023. 22. [Source] A 40-year-old scientist and legal permanent resident has been detained by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection at San Francisco International Airport since July 21. Tae Heung “Will” Kim, who has lived in the U.S. since age 5, was returning from his brother’s wedding in South Korea when agents cited a 2011 misdemeanor marijuana conviction as grounds for his detention. Devastated familyKim is a Ph.D. student at Texas A&M University developing a vaccine for Lyme disease. According to his legal team, he has previously traveled internationally for academic work without incident. Relatives describe Kim as a devoted son and brother who has spent 35 years in the U.S. and built a career focused on public health research. Sharon Lee, Kim’s mother, described her anguish: “When my other child called and told me they arrested Will, my heart felt like the sky and earth fell. It feels like the world has ended. I’ve been so worried. We haven’t been able to talk with him. I can’t sleep or eat. As a mother, I want my son to be safe and free.” Conditions of detentionAttorney Karl Krooth, an immigration lawyer in San Francisco, said Kim’s detention has far exceeded CBP’s internal 72-hour holding limit for airports. “I’ve never seen anyone held that long. A prolonged detention indicates to me that there is a degree of coercion or inducement afoot.” Trending on NextShark: ICE raids Asian supermarkets in New York Krooth reported that Kim was “moved within secondary inspection at least twice per day,” kept in windowless rooms with lights on 24 hours a day, denied exercise or fresh air, forced to sleep in a chair, and given only concession food and water. Kim, who has asthma, reportedly struggled to access medication. Since his detention began, he has had almost no communication with family or counsel, and his legal team believes he may now be held at a facility in Arizona. Alarming trendKim’s detention comes amid a rise in cases where legal permanent residents are held over minor or decades-old offenses under stricter immigration enforcement. Civil rights groups and immigration attorneys report that green card holders are increasingly stopped or removed at airports for low-level convictions, including individuals who have spent most of their lives in the U.S. Becky Belcore, co-director of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium, called Kim’s treatment alarming for “every person who values their freedom and rights.” Belcore criticized both major political parties for failing to represent all residents and called for swift action to protect the rights and freedoms the U.S. claims to uphold. “Immigrants have been used as a scapegoat for the Trump administration to test the will of the People, and to build the infrastructure to enact an authoritarian regime,” she added. 23. CITY HALL, Manhattan (PIX11) — As the race for New York City mayor intensifies, one voting bloc is drawing particular attention: Jewish New Yorkers, who make up roughly 15% of the city’s population. While far from a monolith, the diverse community is increasingly seen as a decisive force in what is shaping up to be a closely watched election. More Local News Traditionally, Jewish voters in the city have been courted by candidates across the political spectrum. But this year, with war in Gaza and questions about candidates’ stances on Israel, there is a new intensity—particularly when it comes to Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, a progressive lawmaker from Queens, has drawn both praise and controversy for his vocal opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which he has called a “genocide.” He has also defended past use by others of the phrase “globalize the intifada”—language that has alarmed some Jewish voters, particularly in more Conservative and Orthodox communities. He has since said he would discourage the use of the phrase. But overall, Mamdani appears to be gaining traction among Jewish New Yorkers. A recent poll from Zenith Research found him leading the field among Jewish voters with 43% support. The poll showed particularly strong numbers among younger Jewish voters (67%), as well as reform and secular Jews (55%). Even among more conservative and Orthodox respondents, he registered 21% support. “In a crowded field, Mamdani remains a double-digit favorite among Jewish New Yorkers,” said Adam Carlson, a founder of Zenith Research. “I think that surprised a lot of people.” More News: NY Elections Mamdani has stressed that while his views on foreign policy differ from some in the Jewish community, he will remain primarily focused on the city’s affordability crisis– the top concern for most voters across the belief spectrum. “Affordability is far and away the number one issue,” Carlson said. “The mayor has very little direct impact on foreign policy, and I think that’s reflected in these generational gaps.” Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams—who is running for re-election as an independent on the “End-Antisemitism” ballot line—is continuing to draw support from many in more religious communities– including top Jewish officials. Tuesday, Adams rallied at City Hall alongside prominent rabbis and other faith leaders. “You have been behind the Jewish community from your heart,” one rabbi said. “And in November, the Jewish community will be behind you.” Supporters of Adams cited his consistent backing of the Jewish community, before, during, and after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack in Israel. “He’s always been there to support us,” said another rabbi. “And now it’s our time to support this great mayor.” Despite stark differences in political alignment, many Jewish New Yorkers interviewed emphasized a shared desire for peace and unity, regardless of who they plan to vote for. “We do not want war,” said one Rabbi. “Any death is horrific—whether you’re Palestinian, Israeli, Jewish, or Arab.
