New York Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani continues to walk past comments advocating for defunding the police, including at a National Night Out Against Crime event in the city on Tuesday night, but his opponent, Mayor Eric Adams, is not buying it. "You can't become pro-public safety when you decide to run for mayor. That just can't happen," Adams said on Wednesday during a press conference, accusing Mamdani of flip-flopping. PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) — A Pittsburgh man has been sentenced in connection with armed fentanyl trafficking, Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti announced. Marques Coffey, 21, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and then sentenced Aug. 5 to 63 months in prison with five years of federal supervised release. According to authorities, around March 2023, Coffey had a quantity of fentanyl with the intent to distribute. He was also in possession of a gun while committing the drug trafficking offense. Both the controlled substance and the gun were seized by police in a satchel that Coffey was wearing. Rivetti thanked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Bellevue Borough Police Department for their efforts during the investigation. STONINGTON, Conn. – A diver from Westerly died after he was found unresponsive and pulled from the water in Stonington on Saturday, Aug. 1, according to the Stonington Police Department. Joel Trebisacci, 47, was recovered from the water at the Stonington Town Fishing Dock at about 9:18 a.m., according to Stonington Deputy Police Chief Todd Olson. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered, and Trebisacci was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Olson said in a press statement. The incident is under investigation by the Stonington Police Department, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to Olson. A woman in Florida was arrested after posing as a nurse and treating over 4,000 patients without a license, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Autumn Bardisa, 29, was arrested on Tuesday after pretending to be a registered nurse and treating 4,486 individuals at a local hospital from July 2023 until she was fired on Jan. 22, the sheriff's office announced in a press release on Wednesday. "This is one of the most disturbing cases of medical fraud we've ever investigated," Sheriff Rick Staly said in a statement on Wednesday. When she applied for the position, she stated she was an "education first" registered nurse, meaning she "passed the required schooling to become a registered nurse but had not passed the national exam to obtain her license," officials said. She then told the hospital she had passed her exams and provided a license number "matching an individual with her first name, Autumn, but with a different last name," the sheriff's office said. Bardisa explained the discrepancy, saying she "had recently gotten married and had a new last name," according to officials. The hospital requested to see her marriage license to confirm her identity, but she never provided it to them, officials said. When Bardisa was offered a promotion in January, officials said a fellow employee checked her license's status and discovered she had "an expired certified nursing assistant license" and immediately reported the findings to hospital administrators. After terminating Bardisa on Jan. 22, hospital officials contacted the sheriff's office, which then began an investigation. Officials found that the nurse Bardisa stole the license from is someone at a different hospital and had attended school with Bardisa, but the two did not "personally know one another," officials said. On Tuesday, Bardisa was arrested for seven counts of practicing a health care profession without a license and seven counts of fraudulent use of personal identification, officials said. This incident comes after a Pennsylvania nurse was arrested in July after using 20 aliases -- including the identities and credentials of four confirmed nurses from southern states -- and seven different Social Security numbers. Another similar incident occurred back in Nov. 2024 when a 44-year-old woman impersonated a registered nurse at a hospital in Burbank, California. Stanford University has announced staffing reductions affecting 361 people, blaming the Trump administration for funding cuts. The university pointed to policies from the administration in its decision to reduce its general budget by $140 million to support operations. The drop in money will affect research funding and support increases in endowment taxes that were passed by congressional Republicans. In June, the president and provost of Stanford told the community that while they will continue to advocate for the values of the university, “At the same time, we need to be realistic about the current landscape and its consequences. There is significant uncertainty about how federal support for universities will evolve, but it is clear that the status quo has changed.” Funding for universities has been in a turbulent situation as President Trump has threatened federal money over alleged antisemitism on campuses, transgender athletes in women’s sports and diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Collectively, the administration has paused billions of dollars to institutions including Harvard University, the University of California, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, among others. Some schools, such as Columbia and Brown University, have been able to restore federal funding through deals with the White House, but not without agreeing to pay substantial amounts of money. President Trump’s first-term surgeon general, Jerome Adams, sharply criticized the decision by Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Tuesday to pare back investments in mRNA vaccine projects, including those underway to help fight bird flu and COVID-19. “I’ve tried to be objective & non-alarmist in response to current HHS actions – but quite frankly this move is going to cost lives,” Adams said Tuesday in a post on the social platform X. “mRNA technology has uses that go far beyond vaccines … and the vaccine they helped develop in record time is credited with saving millions,” he continued. Kennedy announced on Tuesday that HHS will wind down its mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and cancel contracts for 22 projects, worth a total of about $500 million. “We reviewed the science, listened to the experts, and acted,” Kennedy said Tuesday. “The data show these vaccines fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu. We’re shifting that funding toward safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate.” The decision comes after HHS said it conducted a “comprehensive review” of mRNA-related investments that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The agency said pandemic-era vaccine technologies that failed to meet “current scientific standards” will be phased out in favor of whole-virus vaccines and novel platforms. Adams was known as a relatively low-profile member of Trump’s first administration, but he has become a prominent voice speaking out against the public health policies and decisions carried out during the president’s second term.
