PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) -Two Haitian police officers were killed and two others seriously wounded when an explosive drone accidentally detonated at a SWAT base near Haiti's capital, authorities in the Caribbean nation said on Wednesday. Directed by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime, a task force has since March been operating explosive-laden "kamikaze" drones to help police fight powerful armed gangs that have taken control of most of the capital. A private military company run by Blackwater founder Erik Prince is also taking part in the drone operations. The prime minister's office said in a statement the accident took place on Tuesday night in the hillside town of Kenscoff - a flashpoint in the conflict due to its strategic location overlooking the diplomatic hub of Petion-Ville. "A kamikaze drone, transported by residents in good faith, exploded on the site, killing two police officers and seriously injuring two others," his office said in a statement. Citing several unnamed sources, the Miami Herald reported that six officers were hurt in the blast. The prime minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Local residents found the drone after its operators lost contact with the device due to poor weather, it reported, and brought it to nearby police. Shortly after, it exploded. Haiti's national police said an investigation had been opened. "We are taking all measures to ensure a thorough investigation into this tragedy," Fritz Alphonse Jean, a member of Haiti's transitional presidential council, said on social media. Armed groups began attacking Kenscoff at the start of this year. Rights groups report mass killings, rapes, arson and kidnappings, and thousands have fled their homes. Earlier this month, a three-year-old boy and seven staff were kidnapped from a local orphanage, including Irish missionary Gena Heraty. Over 3,100 have been killed in the conflict in the first half of this year, according to U.N. reports. Abrupt and potentially irreversible changes in Antarctica driven by climate change could lift global oceans by meters and lead to "catastrophic consequences for generations," scientists warned Wednesday. More broadly, a state-of-knowledge review by a score of top experts revealed accelerating shifts across the region that are often both cause and effect of global warming, according to a study published in Nature, a peer-reviewed international scientific journal. The study's authors suggest that limiting CO2 emissions, and in turn preventing global warming from exceeding at least 1.5 degrees Celsius, "will be imperative" to reduce and prepare for the broad effects of abrupt Antarctic and Southern Ocean changes. "Antarctica is showing worrying signs of rapid change across its ice, ocean and ecosystems," lead author and Australian National University professor Nerilie Abram told the Agence France-Presse. "Some of these abrupt changes will be difficult to stop." Shifts in different facets of Antarctica's climate system amplify each other and have accelerated the pace of warming globally as well, Abram said. The study looked at evidence of abrupt change — or "regime shifts" — in sea ice, regional ocean currents, the continent's ice sheet and ice shelves, and marine life. It also examined how they interact. Floating sea ice does not significantly add to sea level when it melts, but its retreat does replace white surfaces that reflect almost all of the sun's energy back into space with deep blue water, which absorbs the same amount instead. Ninety percent of the heat generated by manmade global warming is soaked up by oceans. Retreating sea ice After increasing slightly during the first 35 years that satellite data was available, Antarctic sea ice cover plunged dramatically over the last decade. Since 2014, sea ice has retreated on average 120 kilometers, or roughly 75 miles, from the continent's shoreline. That contraction has happened about three times faster in 10 years than the decline in Arctic sea ice over nearly 50. By July 2025, daily sea ice extent in both hemispheres was at its third lowest in the 47-year satellite record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder. Data from NASA, released in 2020, indicated that Antarctica and Greenland had lost thousands of gigatons of ice between 2003 and 2019, indirectly contributing to more than half an inch of overall sea level rise around the world. Last September, scientists warned that the Antarctic Ice Sheet, officially called the Thwaites Glacier, would deteriorate "further and faster," with the increased melting expected to trigger rising sea levels. Research conducted by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, a collective of more than 100 scientists, found that the volume of water flowing into the sea from the Thwaites glacier and others nearby had doubled from the 1990s to the 2010s. The "overwhelming evidence of a regime shift in sea ice" means that, on current trends, Antarctica could essentially become ice free in summer sooner than the Arctic, the recent study published Wednesday in Nature found. This will speed up warming in the region and beyond, and could push some marine species toward extinction, experts warned. Over the last two years, for example, helpless emperor penguin chicks perished at multiple breeding grounds, drowning or freezing to death when sea ice gave way earlier than usual under their tiny feet. Of five sites monitored in the Bellingshausen Sea region in 2023, all but one experienced a 100 percent loss of chicks, earlier research reported. Unlike sea ice, ice sheets and the ice shelves to which they are connected are on — or supported by — land. The world would need to heat up by 5 degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels to melt the entire Antarctic ice sheet, which would lift global oceans an almost unimaginable 58 meters, or nearly 200 feet. Point of no return Global warming to date — on average about 1.3 degrees Celsius — is fast approaching a threshold that would cause part of the ice sheet to generate at least three meters of sea level rise, flooding coastal areas inhabited today by hundreds of millions, the study said. "Unstoppable collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is one of the most concerning global tipping points," said Abram. "The evidence points to this being triggered at global warming well below 2°C." Another potential risk is the collapse of the Antarctic Overturning Circulation, a system of ocean currents that distribute heat and nutrients within the the region and globally. A "rapid and substantial slowdown" of the currents has already begun, and evidence from the previous interglacial period — between two ice ages — before our own, 125,000 years ago, points to an abrupt stagnation of the system under conditions similar to those seen today. "This would lead to widespread climate and ecosystem impacts," ranging from an intensification of global warming to a decrease in the ocean's capacity to absorb CO2, the study reported. Ultimately, the only way to slow down the interlocking changes is to stop adding more planet-warming gases into the atmosphere. "The greenhouse gas emission decisions that we make over the coming decade or two will lock in how much ice we will lose and how quickly it will be lost," Abram said. Lorraine Shin, the mother of UFC Hall of Famer and former two-division champion B.J. Penn, was granted a one-year protection order on Tuesday in Hawaii. The order prevents her son from contacting her in any form prior to May 26, 2026 — exactly one year after the date she initially sought the order. According to a Hilo Family Court judge, Shin proved her claim of "domestic abuse and/or extreme psychological abuse by a preponderance of the evidence presented in court," according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. During the hearing on Tuesday, Shin requested a two-year order against Penn, but Judge Jeffrey Ng instead granted the one-year order she originally sought against the former UFC fighter. Penn, 46, has been arrested numerous times in recent months on charges including abuse of a family or household member. His mother was granted a temporary restraining order against him back in May, approved by the same judge. Shin, 79, has alleged that Penn suffers from a rare psychological disorder known as Capgras syndrome, which causes him to believe that his family members have been replaced by imposters. Penn has made multiple posts to his social media accounts in recent months in which he alleges that very thing, particularly when it comes to his mother. In court on Tuesday, Shin was permitted to question her son, asking Penn if he was willing to admit that he had publicly accused her of being "an imposter who is trying to steal the family assets." Penn said that he had. “Do you admit that you had said publicly that your mother and brothers have been murdered?” Shin asked, according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. Again, Penn said that he had. In Shin’s initial request for a restraining order, she alleged a disturbing pattern of behavior from her son. After returning from a trip in early May, Shin said, she noticed many of her belongings “such as clothes, shoes, jewelry, personal items” and even her bed had all been removed from her bedroom. Shin filed a police report after Penn denied taking the items, she said, and a few days later her purse “with my driver’s license, credit card and locks for my safe” were also stolen. Shin said she then put up security cameras inside and outside the home, while also installing a deadbolt lock on her bedroom door. According to Shin, Penn took down or tampered with the cameras and “also put glue into my dead bolts that stopped me from opening my bedroom door.” Shin claimed Penn then stole her mail and aggressively shined a flashlight in her face on the night of May 25 when confronted. In order to prevent her from calling the police, Shin claimed Penn "grabbed my arms and shoved me against the 4-door gray sedan, which I felt a sharp pain in my back," resulting in her screaming for Penn's younger brother, Reagan, to come help. Penn was ultimately arrested and ordered to stay away from his mother's home for 48 hours, however Shin claimed she caught Penn breaking into her home again the following day. As a result, Penn was again arrested for violating the police order. Penn was ultimately arrested four separate times in a period of about three weeks, and now faces misdemeanor charges including domestic abuse. He has trials scheduled in late October and early November, and is currently free on a $2,000 bond. Penn last fought in the UFC in 2019, suffering his seventh consecutive loss. A 2025 Market Outlook Report from Dave Cantin Group (DCG) and Kaiser Associates says 40% of US consumers would consider buying a Chinese-made vehicle. The report says 75% of US dealers expect a Chinese brand to launch stateside within a year, despite the anti-import stance of the Trump administration when it comes to vehicles. The 2025 Market Outlook Report says vehicle affordability is still important, and that the US market has reached "peak truck," while South Korean automakers have surged. Over the past 20 years we've heard from multiple Chinese automakers that they're anywhere from two to five years from a definite US launch. But we've yet to see it happen, unless we discount a few foreign- and domestic-branded vehicles assembled in China that have been offered stateside, including from Buick and Volvo. But are Americans ready to buy from Chinese brands? A new 2025 Market Outlook Report Midyear Update from Dave Cantin Group (DCG) and Kaiser Associates, which is an M&A advisory company, notes that 40% of US consumers surveyed said they would consider buying a Chinese-made vehicle. What is far more surprising, according to the report, is that 75% of US dealers expect a Chinese brand to land stateside within a year in the current political climate, while DCG believes this is far less likely in reality. "Affordability is the dominant theme at the midpoint of 2025, and it has implications across nearly every other issue facing the automotive industry," Dave Cantin Group President Brian Gordon says. "Affordability is reshaping purchase decisions, driving interest in cheaper Chinese vehicles, and making any manufacturer decision to pass on tariff costs to consumers virtually impossible without the risk of losing market share." Hostile Climate for ImportsStill, willingness among some Americans to buy Chinese-made cars (mostly EVs) is one thing, and their availability stateside is quite another. In the past 25 years we do not recall a more hostile political climate to goods produced in China, especially cars, given the current administration's attitude toward cars produced as close as Canada, for instance. And even European brands continue to face an uncertain 2025 given the tariff turmoil seen thus far, while the matter of import tariffs on some European brands remains far from decided. New Chinese brands like Xiaomi have gained considerable popularity in a short span of time, while others like BYD have made a push in numerous export markets. NurPhoto - Getty ImagesThe report is timely in noting that Chinese brands have made significant headway in Europe over the past few years and continue to do so in other regions, mainly in the market for EVs. "Abroad, Chinese OEMs doubled EU market share in the first half of 2025, with sales up 91% year-over-year and BYD outselling Tesla in Europe for the first time in April," the study notes. The report finds a "controlled rollout" of Chinese-made vehicles under the current administration "plausible," though the political benefits of such a move for the administration are not cited. The report also concedes that Chinese EV manufacturers had been dealt "a major blow" by the reelection of Donald Trump, whose administration has held the entire European, Japanese, and South Korean auto industries on edge with threats of tariffs for the past six months. The 2025 Market Outlook Report Midyear Update notes a few other major takeaways, besides the disconnect between consumer willingness, political reality, and actual availability of Chinese-made cars. One of them is consumer desire for less expensive vehicles, which has been a pretty clear trend in our inflationary dystopia—so much so that the American buying public may have finally gorged itself on pickup trucks. ‘We’ve Reached Peak Truck’"We've reached peak truck, as consumers finally push back and demand more vehicle options, particularly sedans, that are more affordable, leaving some dealers struggling with their product mix," the report says. Another major takeaway, one that might not surprise all that many readers, is that South Korean automakers have made significant gains over the past several years. "Interest in both Japanese and domestic automakers appeared to decline this year, while consumers expressed greater interest in purchasing from Korean automakers," the market outlook notes. The updated market outlook notes that the US has reached "peak truck," as consumers begin to turn to more affordable options amid growing inflation. FREDERIC J. And it's no surprise, perhaps, with a rapidly aging lineup and a pickup truck that ran out of sales momentum very quickly after launch. Tesla is also no longer the only game in town when it comes to EVs, as Japanese, Korean, Swedish, and German brands have all launched models in multiple segments, many of them not covered by Tesla. A deeper issue with Tesla is that besides the long-promised second-gen Roadster, which was first seen in prototype form nearly a decade ago, there is no other new vehicle on the horizon. Also, SAE Level 3 driving does not appear imminent for Tesla, and the automaker seems content to facelift its aging models. So far this tactic has worked surprisingly well for Tesla, at least until early 2025. Hearst OwnedBut at some point consumers might venture to Wikipedia and find out when the Model 3 platform first entered production, in 2017. Don't bother denying it: your most secret desire is to one day be engaged in the largest air battle of all time, probably against aliens, and then right as the bad guys are about to shoot you down, bam, you eject right out of that explosion, flipping them the bird on your way out! So it would be super embarrassing if instead you ejected... while still on the ground. That would be very bad and dumb. Whoopsie. Well, some poor sod had a very bad day on August 12, during a backseat ride-along in an F-15D Eagle, Aero Time reports. This was at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts, home to the 104th Fighter Wing. This was apparently meant to be a so-called incentive flight, in which a member a non-pilot member of the wing was allowed a chance to be flown in a fighter jet. This person sure did fly! Just not in the way they expected. While still taxiing on the runway, they managed to trigger their ejection seat, blowing off the canopy and then blasting up into the sky. Thankfully, the F-15's ejection system is rated for zero-zero, meaning it can safely eject even if the plane is at zero altitude, zero speed. In this case, that resulted in zero injuries, so nothing was wounded but dignity. While this backseater wasn't a pilot, anyone who gets in a fighter jet is given a thorough briefing, so they should have known better than to pull the "don't pull me unless you have to" handle. Worse, ejection seats are only supposed to be armed under certain conditions, so there may have been some procedural steps that were missed. The 104th halted all flight operations for 36 hours after the incident, probably to make sure nobody else was about to yeet themselves out of a plane, and an investigation has been launched (just like the seat). Whoever it was went on quite a ride. Once the handle is pulled, the canopy is blown off, the limb restraints are tightened, and your chair becomes a rocket ship, all in the space of a second or two. Then the parachute deploys and a separation motor shoves the seat away from you, so you can land unhindered. Why these are not installed in corporate meeting rooms remains unknown. For what it's worth, the seat itself is loaded up with survival gear, so the downed aviator can go over and retrieve them after landing. In this case, though, this was not a rugged hero trapped behind enemy lines. This was a landlubber who literally fell on their own base. I don't think they needed the life raft this time. I'm on the record here as being a big fan of storm chasing, and I've seen "Smokey and the Bandit" more times than is probably healthy. But, while video games have given me the opportunity to chase storms or drive a tractor-trailer, they've never been so bold as to give me both of those dreams at once — until now. A new game called "Road Kings" from Saber Interactive finally promises to let me aim an 18-wheeler directly at a tornado and put the hammer down. There's also some sort of "plot," I hear, but I'm here for the twisters. If the name Saber Interactive sounds familiar, it's the studio behind classic Jalop titles like "Snowrunner," "Mudrunner," and "Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn." That experience with inclement-weather driving sims should help Saber navigate the physics behind driving a fully loaded semi straight into the core of a tornado, which is exactly what I plan to do in game. Repeatedly. Even if it means a game over. Toyota announced pricing for the 2026 bZ lineup, which cuts $2170 off the base price of last year's car. The 2026 lineup starts at $36,350 for the base trim and extends up to $46,750 for the Limited AWD trim at the top of the range. Toyota reworked the bZ for 2026, with changes highlighted by increased power and significantly improved range. Maybe customers thought "bZ4X" had too many syllables, and that led to Toyota chopping off the latter two—but, whatever the reason, Toyota has opted to rename its electric crossover to simply "bZ" for the 2026 model year. And the automaker went with a smaller price to go along with the shorter name—at least for the bottom half of the lineup. ToyotaFor the base trim, the 2026 bZ cuts $2170 off the price when compared with the 2025 model. That brings the starting price for the front-drive XLE to $36,350 when it's equipped with the standard battery. Upgrading from the standard 57.7-kWh pack to the XLE Plus with its 74.7-kWh pack increases that figure by $3000, while adding AWD tacks on another $2000, bringing the XLE AWD to $41,350. Unfortunately, the Limited models don't offer the same olive branch as the XLEs. At the upper end of the lineup, the front-drive Limited trim nets a $44,750 starting price, making it $1500 more than the 2025 equivalent. Adding AWD means coughing up an additional $2000, bringing the Limited AWD to $46,750. ToyotaAlong with changing the name, Toyota made a whole slew of changes to the bZ. All the trims come equipped with an onboard NACS charging port, giving access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Thanks to updated batteries and new electric motors, range and power are up for nearly every trim as well. Tulsi Gabbard may have broken the law by publicly identifying dozens of current and former officials while revoking their security clearances, according to a national security lawyer. Gabbard revealed that 37 people have been targeted in the clearance purge ordered by President Trump, accusing them without evidence of “politicizing and manipulating intelligence, leaking classified intelligence without authorization, and/or committing intentional egregious violations of tradecraft standards.” Gabbard made the announcement—which comes after Trump stripped the security clearance of his political opponents—by posting a memo from her office on X. The list of 37 individuals targeted includes intelligence officials who concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, as well as those accused by far-right activist Laura Loomer of lacking loyalty to Trump, according to Axios. Mark Zaid, an attorney who represents intelligence officers and who is suing the Trump administration to have his own stripped security clearance restored, suggested Gabbard may have landed herself in legal trouble by making the memo public. Miami (EE.UU.), 20 ago (EFE).- Las deportaciones agravan las crisis de los refugios de animales de Florida y otras regiones de Estados Unidos, donde estos albergues reportan estar saturados y necesitados de apoyo para acoger a decenas de mascotas que quedan abandonadas cuando las autoridades migratorias expulsan de forma repentina a sus dueños. Tal es el caso de Adopt and Save a Life Rescue Mission, un refugio animal en el oeste de Miami que ha recibido al menos 19 perros y gatos de dueños deportados en los últimos meses, además de gallos y otras aves, según cuenta en una entrevista con EFE la directora de la organización, Daymi Blain. "Ya teníamos muchos problemas con personas que abandonaban sus mascotas, así sea por evicciones (desalojos), mudanzas, y entonces desde hace más o menos seis meses para acá hemos recibido muchísimas más llamadas, completamente diferentes, ya (hablan) de que 'mis padres se fueron, los deportaron, están detenidos'", relata. Las denuncias de mascotas abandonadas no cesan, pero esta asociación ya está a su límite, pues tiene más de 50 perros y más de 30 gatos, además de decenas en camino, por lo que han reacondicionado un establo y tres casas rodantes, con un gasto mensual de luz de 1.200 dólares. Otras asociaciones temen que la situación se agrave porque Estados Unidos arrestó a más de 352.000 inmigrantes indocumentados en los primeros 200 días de la Administración de Donald Trump y ha deportado a 324.000, lo que equivaldría a un récord de 1.620 al día, según reportó el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS). Apenas la semana pasada, agentes migratorios detuvieron a Benjamín Marcelo Guerrero Cruz, un joven chileno de 18 años, mientras paseaba a su perro en Reseda, ciudad californiana en el condado de Los Ángeles, donde su familia halló al animal abandonado. En California, uno de los estados más afectados por las deportaciones junto a Texas y Florida, la organización C.A.R.E.4Paws busca fondos para lanzar en otoño un refugio que recibirá a mascotas de migrantes que afronten una posible deportación, además de situaciones de violencia u otras crisis. Otros refugios reportan que los dueños están adelantándose ante las deportaciones. "Nos han llamado para ayudar con otra situación que parte el corazón. Un hombre que afronta una deportación debe dejar su hogar mañana, y su mayor preocupación es qué pasará con sus amados perros", compartió el refugio Saving Hope Rescue, basado en Dallas, esta semana en Facebook. Los rescatistas necesitan ayudaPor ello, la directora de Adopt and Save a Life Rescue Mission pide ayuda a las personas, a quienes solicita que, si no pueden adoptar una mascota, donen fondos, comida o arena. "Necesitamos mucha ayuda de voluntarios, de personas que ayuden a cuidar los perros en sus casas porque no tenemos el espacio, necesitamos ventiladores, necesitamos techos para los animales porque no tenemos, los tenemos en jaulas con un ventilador", lamenta Blain.
