  2. Cam Ward and Jefferey Simmons got into it at Tennessee Titans practice on Monday. On Wednesday, Ward addressed the scuffle with reporters. To the Titans quarterback, it was no big deal. In fact, Ward said, it was fun. Here's what he had to say on Wednesday when asked if he'd learned anything from the scuffle: "Did I learn anything from it? Jeff's strong as s***," Ward quipped. Ward went on to say that the scuffle was good for the team and indicated that there's no ill will between him and Simmons. "It was fun. At the same time, I think it was what we needed, though," Ward continued. "We love competing, especially with me and Jeff. I'm excited to have that man as my teammate. "I can't wait to see what he do on Sundays. I already know what he's about. But I can see the real thing coming soon." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Simmons didn't address the dustup with media. But unless he's got a different version than Ward, things appear to be just fine between Tennessee's No. 1 pick rookie quarterback and its three-time Pro Bowl defensive captain. What happenedThere's no published video of the scuffle. But multiple reporters were on the scene and provided an account of the dustup that took place during a red-zone drill. According to A to Z Sports' Easton Freeze, Ward threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Calvin Ridley. After the pass, Ward shoved Simmons in the back. Ward then hit him with his signature "Zombieland" celebration that he made famous as a Heisman Trophy finalist at Miami. Per ESPN, Simmons responded with a two-hand shove to Ward's facemask, prompting Ward's offensive teammates to come to his defense. Simmons lost his helmet during the fracas and left the field when it was subdued. He did not return to the drill, which was over after two more plays, per the report. Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee was on the field and offered his perspective of the scuffle on Monday. Like Ward, Brownlee chalked the incident up as a positive while praising Ward's and Simmons' competitive fire. "I feel like it's a great thing," Brownlee said. "When you've got great teams, brothers fight. At the end of the day, as long as we all have got each other's back, we all connected. "We all got that bond. We all got that same connection where we're gonna fight for one another, that's the most important thing at the end of the day." Ward and Simmons, meanwhile, already have an established off-field relationship. Simmons has taken Ward fishing and posted a photo of the two on a boat in July. So all does appear to be fine among Tennessee's offensive and defensive leaders. The next step will be translating their practice intensity to a tough Week 1 matchup on the road against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 7. View the full article
  3. Fourteen of the 16 spots in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are taken. Austin Dillon’s surprise win at Richmond made him the 14th winner of the 2025 season. The victory came a year after Dillon won at Richmond when he crashed Joey Logano on the last lap in an attempt to get a playoff berth. Though Dillon officially kept the win, NASCAR revoked his playoff privileges from the victory and Dillon failed to qualify for the postseason. This year, he’s in. Dillon became the third driver to get a victory in 2025 despite currently sitting outside the top 20 in the points standings. Josh Berry (22nd) won the third race of the season at Las Vegas. And Shane van Gisbergen (24th) has dominated road courses thanks to his excellence in Australian Supercars. But he doesn’t have any top-10 finishes on oval tracks. With Dillon winning his way into the playoffs, there are just two playoff spots up for grabs on Saturday night in Daytona (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC). If a winless driver becomes the 15th winner of the season, just one driver will make it into the playoffs via his position in the points standings. And you don’t have to go back very far to find the last time a driver snuck his way into the playoffs at Daytona. A year ago, Harrison Burton got the first victory of his Cup Series career to get into the playoffs. Burton led only the final lap as the seven-caution race featured two massive crashes. Can a similar surprise happen in 2025? Here’s a look at how the playoff race looks ahead of the final race of the Cup Series regular season. All odds are from BetMGM. Already in the playoffsDenny Hamlin (4 wins) Shane van Gisbergen (4) Kyle Larson (3) Christopher Bell (3) William Byron (2) Chase Elliott (1) Ryan Blaney (1) Chase Briscoe (1) Bubba Wallace (1) Joey Logano (1) Ross Chastain (1) Austin Cindric (1) Josh Berry (1) Austin Dillon (1) Larson and Hamlin are the co-favorites for the Cup Series title at +400 while Bell is at +450. van Gisbergen is currently third with 22 playoff points but is 80-1 to win the title thanks to his inability to get a top-10 outside of a road course. Chase Elliott’s early end to his Richmond race means that William Byron will win the regular-season title and start the playoffs with the most playoff points. The Team Penske trio of Blaney, Logano and Cindric are the three favorites to win Saturday night’s race thanks to their prowess at drafting tracks. Blaney and Logano are 10-1 to win while Cindric is 12-1. Would love a repeat winnerTyler Reddick (714 points) Alex Bowman (685 points) Both Reddick and Bowman would love a Team Penske driver — or any driver with a win, for that matter — to get to victory lane if neither of them are going to make it. Bowman is 60 points ahead of Chris Buescher in the points standings; Buescher cannot catch him without getting a win to automatically qualify himself for the playoffs. If there is a new winner, Reddick has a 29-point advantage over Bowman for what would be the final playoff spot. But we’ve seen points deficits like that get erased at tracks like Daytona and Talladega before. All it takes is an early crash. Needs to win to get inChris Buescher (20-1 to win Daytona) Ryan Preece (25-1) Kyle Busch (14-1) Ty Gibbs (35-1) AJ Allmendinger (60-1) Brad Keselowski (13-1) Carson Hocevar (35-1) Michael McDowell (40-1) Erik Jones (40-1) John Hunter Nemechek (60-1) Zane Smith (60-1) Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (20-1) Daniel Suarez (40-1) Justin Haley (60-1) Todd Gilliland (50-1) Ty Dillon (30-1) Noah Gragson (50-1) Cole Custer (60-1) Riley Herbst (80-1) Cody Ware (200-1) Keselowski and Busch are considered the favorites among the winless drivers to get a win and make the postseason. It’s been a rough year for both Cup Series champions. Busch is 16th in the points standings and has just two top-five finishes. Keselowski has shown speed recently, but he’s 19th with four top-five finishes. Keselowski could be staring at all three of his Roush Fenway Keselowski cars missing the playoffs if neither he, Buescher or Ryan Preece win on Saturday. Buescher and Preece are currently 11th and 13th in the standings, respectively. In most years, that’s enough to get you into the postseason. Not this year with three winners outside the top 20 in the standings. Both Stenhouse and McDowell are former Daytona 500 champions and could be in position for a victory late in the race. Ty Dillon is 15 places behind 17th-place Ty Gibbs in the standings but has shorter odds to get a victory. View the full article
  4. After putting together the All-Renaissance Team and the All-Breakout Team, it's time to dig deep and close out the series here in late August. They're a little harder to find, you may not even know their names, but sleepers are a cornerstone of fantasy football. There's nothing quite like your 12th-round pick suddenly becoming a top-12 player and carrying your stars to the playoffs. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] So who are these under-the-radar values for 2025? May I present the 2025 All-Sleeper Team. (Note: The definition of "sleeper" can change depending on the context, but for this column, I'm sticking with players in the double-digit rounds, according to Yahoo ADP.) QuarterbackC.J. Stroud, Houston TexansADP: 11th Round (QB17) I considered recycling a player from the 2025 surprises piece (Trevor Lawrence), the All-Breakout Team (Bryce Young), or the All-Renaissance Team (Jordan Love), but you already know they're solid picks, so here's a new one: post-hype "sleeper" C.J. Stroud. After clocking in as the fantasy QB8 in points per game his rookie season, Stroud took a big step back last year, finishing as the QB28 with 5.4 fewer fantasy points per game. He saw a discouraging drop-off in touchdown rate and yards per attempt, threw more than twice as many interceptions and rushed for zero touchdowns (after scoring three as a rookie). So which version of the young QB should we expect in 2025: the "next great star" from Year 1 or the "What happened to him?" fantasy bust from Year 2? Let's consider the environment. In both seasons so far, Stroud lost his starting receivers for various stretches of time. But in 2024, that included five missed games from WR1 Nico Collins and nine missed games from WR2 Stefon Diggs. In the six games both receivers were active at the start of the season, Stroud averaged 54% more fantasy points per game than he did the rest of the year. While health remains fickle, Houston picked up the reliable Christian Kirk and two intriguing Iowa State rookies in Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel to bolster their depth. Meanwhile, Stroud was also sacked 52 times last year (second-most in the NFL) after taking just 38 sacks in 2023. His offensive line earned PFF's seventh-worst overall grade and was almost completely reworked for 2025 (of the starting five, only RT Tytus Howard remains). Ultimately, Stroud is one of the league's best young quarterbacks, and another year of development should help hone him further. He's being drafted around his floor, but if he finds that rookie form and takes another step forward, Stroud has the potential to join the tier with Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes. Running BacksRB1 Cam Skattebo, New York GiantsADP: 10th Round (RB37) As of this week, Cam Skattebo is back on my short list for rookie sleepers in 2025, as he returned to practice on Tuesday following an extended injury absence (hamstring) and was immediately involved. It's not impossible he plays in Thursday's preseason action against New England — if he does, my eyes will be taped open. Skattebo was one of the most fascinating and polarizing players in this draft class after breaking college football in 2024 — specifically, 1,711 rushing yards and 21 TDs on 293 carries, plus 45 receptions for 605 yards and three more scores. On tape, he's an untacklable wrecking ball with elite contact balance who Daniel Jeremiah comped to "a Plinko chip from 'The Price is Right' ... just bouncing off everything and everybody." He also has great vision, bell-cow toughness and major three-down, pass-catching upside. The range of outcomes on Skattebo is Grand Canyon-wide. On the one hand, he fell to the fourth round, went to a suspect Giants offense "behind" Tyrone Tracy Jr., lacks game-breaking speed and has hamstring concerns heading into the season. On the other hand, he was unstoppable at Arizona State just a few months ago, Tracy is a fifth-round pick himself (and has no vice grip on the starting job) and New York is going to be playing catch-up a lot in 2025, which might synchronize well with Skattebo's skill set. Should the rookie flash in preseason or camp the next couple weeks, it could reverse his ADP slide and bounce him back above "legal" sleeper territory, but for now, he's slotting in as the RB1. RB2 Braelon Allen, New York JetsADP: 12th Round (RB45) The drumbeat for Braelon Allen in "deeper" fantasy circles is impossible to ignore, so it's always surprising to see his ADP still stuck down here in the double-digit rounds. He's gaining steam as a 1B to Breece Hall's 1A, in both training camp and preseason. The word among insiders is that he's beloved by the coaches, too talented to ignore and potentially in for a monster year. Oh, and he's 6-foot-1, 235 pounds, with a 96th percentile PlayerProfiler speed score. Allen is just about the only creature on the planet to draw frequent comparisons to Derrick Henry (maybe outside of a rhinoceros). The "worst case" for Allen, based on all the signs, is that he's one of fantasy's best handcuffs, with 20-touch-per-game upside if Hall were to suffer an injury. The middling case, and probably the most likely, is that Allen is sort of a David Montgomery Lite to Hall's Jahmyr Gibbs Lite in this Jets offense (which, admittedly, won't be as good as Detroit's). And the optimistically wishful case is that Allen plays so well that he prompts the Jets to slide him above Hall on the depth chart ... or potentially even trade Hall early in the season. Honestly, Allen is a value pick in the 12th round regardless, but his legitimate league-winning upside makes him arguably the best sleeper in this range of drafts. Wide ReceiversWR1 Josh Downs, Indianapolis Colts ADP: 11th Round (WR48) Earlier this week, Josh Downs (and all his fantasy managers) got the best news of the 2025 offseason: Daniel Jones has been named the Colts' starting quarterback. Last year, Downs averaged a 17% target share from Anthony Richardson (solid), but that translated to just 2.9 catches, 43.6 yards and 8.1 fantasy points per game (not solid) thanks to Richardson's historically poor volume and accuracy. However, with Joe Flacco at the helm in 2024, Downs saw an elite 27% target share and averaged 7.0 receptions, 64.9 yards and 11.7 fantasy points per game. Only five wide receivers saw more targets per game than Downs did with Flacco: Ja'Marr Chase, CeeDee Lamb, Puka Nacua, Malik Nabers and Davante Adams with Aaron Rodgers. Downs saw eight or more targets in an absurd six of seven games with the aged QB. In the eight-game span quarterbacked primarily by Flacco from Weeks 4-11 (basically half the season), Downs was the WR17 in half-PPR points per game. On the season, regardless of QB, he saw a target on 27.9% of his routes, fourth-highest in the league behind Nacua, Nabers and Nico Collins. Getting the picture? Now, Jones isn't Flacco — and no one should project Downs for nine or more targets per game following this news — but he's a much better solution for every Indy pass-catcher than Richardson would have been. Nabers was just an 11-target-per-game sponge with Jones last year, and we've seen stretches of WR1 volume from guys like Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate and Wan'Dale Robinson with Jones at the wheel. All of this bodes well for Downs, who's gearing up for a career year in just about every relevant statistic. He's probably the "sleepiest" lock for triple-digit targets in all of fantasy, and has legitimate WR2 upside if he and Jones find productive chemistry early on. WR2 Marvin Mims Jr., Denver BroncosADP: 13th Round (WR60) Marvin Mims Jr. has made a splash as a returner through two seasons (two Pro Bowl nods and an All-Pro selection) and managed to score six receiving touchdowns last year, but he's totaled just 61 catches and 880 yards over that span and was the WR41 in 2024 (even with the touchdowns). So why the excitement? Because Mims could be primed for a classic Year 3 wide receiver breakout. Mims ran just 196 routes last season, but was targeted on 25.5% of those routes and averaged 2.57 yards per route run. Among the 130 wideouts to hit 150+ routes, those metrics ranked 13th ... and fourth, respectively. The only receivers to average more YPRR were Puka Nacua, A.J. Brown and Nico Collins. And it seemed head coach Sean Payton finally recognized it the last three weeks of the season, when Mims jumped from 10 to 18 routes per game, and proceeded to rack up 16 catches for 216 yards and four touchdowns. Bo Nix really turned it on towards the end of his rookie year and is a favorite to continue that progression into 2025. Mims' only real target competition in Denver — should he start seeing significant snaps — is Courtland Sutton (not a true target hog for most of his career) and tight end Evan Engram. All Mims needs is opportunity, and he could very quickly become what Brandin Cooks once was for Payton in New Orleans: a small-but-speedy deep threat with the ability to land between low-end WR2 and fringe WR1 in fantasy. Tight EndTE Tyler Warren, Indianapolis ColtsADP: 10th Round (TE14) After using Brenton Strange as my All-Breakout tight end, I'm pivoting to a less "sleepy," potentially league-winning tight end in Colts rookie Tyler Warren. Clearly, the decision to start Jones has made an impact, as Warren is the second Indy pass-catcher to make the All-Sleeper Team ... and for good reason. All of their ADPs have been depressed by the "threat" of Richardson, and all will likely rise over the next couple weeks before the season. Fortunately, Warren still squeaks past the threshold as I write this, making him an easy pick. A year ago, Brock Bowers was the TE11, in roughly the eighth or ninth round, by Yahoo ADP. Back in 2023, Sam LaPorta was the TE24 all the way down in the mid-teens. Both finished as the No. 1 tight end in fantasy as rookies. And while I'm not projecting that for Warren, it has set a new precedent for uber-talented, highly-drafted tight ends in Year 1. Warren was the 14th overall pick in April (one spot later than Bowers in 2024), is a 6-foot-5, 256-pound athletic specimen of near-Gronkian proportions and just posted one of the best tight end seasons in college football history. Specifically, 104 catches, 1,233 yards and eight receiving touchdowns on a 31.4% target share ... oh, and 218 yards and four touchdowns as a rusher, just for kicks. He's drawn comparisons to Jeremy Shockey — who was the fantasy TE4 as a rookie — and will very likely fit into the elite tight end tier for most of the next decade. It's just a question of whether he does it in Year 1. Warren will not remain a sleeper for long, but he makes the team without hesitation here in August. FLEXRBs Javonte Williams & Jaydon Blue, Dallas CowboysADP: Williams - 143 (RB42) / Blue - 166 (RB49) Some would say that having two guys in the All-Sleeper FLEX is cheating. I say it's intelligently hedging, and allowing you, the reader, to make the pick you prefer. Plus, it's a FLEX. As in flexible. Options. You get me. Right now, heading into Week 3 of the preseason, Javonte Williams figures to be the opening day starter for the Cowboys, while fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue profiles as the pass-catcher and change-of-pace back. However, the depth chart remains more or less wide open, which is why both backs are being drafted this late. If Williams does secure the starting job, he'll be the cheapest RB1 in all of fantasy, playing in a borderline elite offense. Considering he's been held out of preseason action alongside other key starters like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Jake Ferguson, his chances are looking better by the minute. Meanwhile, Blue is set to make his preseason debut against Atlanta on Friday, after working through a foot/ankle injury the past couple weeks. The injury deflated what was a growing sense of sleeper hype earlier in the offseason, but he's probably the most explosive back on the depth chart and has three-down upside if Williams flops. Unless Miles Sanders sees a Year 7 resurgence (doubtful), one or both of these running backs should have value in the Dallas offense. Feel free to pick your favorite, or honestly just scoop up both until we get clarity in Week 1. Odds are you'll get an unheralded RB2/RB3 out of it, as we did with Rico Dowdle last season (RB24). 5. Israel entered the first stages of its invasion of Gaza City on Wednesday, the Israeli military spokesman said. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers have taken control of the outskirts of the city, one of Hamas’s last strongholds, spokesman Brig Gen Effie Defrin said. Following a clash with Hamas south of Khan Younis in Gaza on Wednesday, he said: “We will deepen the blows to Hamas in Gaza City, a terror stronghold… We will deepen the blows to the terror infrastructure above and below ground, and disconnect the reliance of the population on Hamas.” He said the IDF “is not waiting” and preliminary operations are under way in the area, with Hamas now “battered and bruised”. “We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City,” he said. Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the army to “shorten the timelines for seizing the last terror strongholds and for the defeat of Hamas,” he said in a statement. It did not specify the new timelines. Last week, the Israeli prime minister said his plan to expand military action in the wartorn enclave was the “best way to end the war”. He insisted Israel had “no choice” but to “finish the job” and “defeat” Hamas in its last two strongholds: Gaza City and the camps in the al-Mawasi area along the coast. He compared invading Gaza City to Israel’s military operations in Rafah last year, when more than a million civilians were evacuated from the border town. The army has called up 60,000 reservists as the Gaza war looks set to continue amid flailing ceasefire talks. A Palestinian woman was trapped under the rubble of a house, which was hit in an Israeli strike. She was rescued after this picture was taken - Stringer/ReutersThe renewed offensive comes as the army called up 60,000 reservists as the Gaza war looks set to continue amid flailing ceasefire talks. World leaders have strongly condemned the Israeli security cabinet’s decision to send forces into the city because of the potential to worsen the already catastrophic humanitarian situation for the Gazan people. But Israel Katz, the Israeli defence minister, rejected the criticism and said on Wednesday that plans had been approved to push into the city, which would include extending the service of an additional 20,000 reservists currently serving. “We now call on our heroic soldiers in the reserves, permanent and regular ranks, to stand up in order to bring about the release of the hostages, the subjugation of Hamas, and the end of the war on the terms set by Israel,” said Mr Katz. “I instruct you to use all tools and all power to strike the enemy until it is subdued, and to protect IDF soldiers. This is the supreme consideration, and anyone who has any complaints should contact me.” Palestinians run for cover during an Israeli strike on Wednesday - Bashar Taleb/AFPIsraeli troops clashed on Wednesday with more than 15 Hamas terrorists who emerged from tunnel shafts and attacked with gunfire and anti-tank missiles near Khan Younis, south of Gaza City, severely wounding one soldier and lightly wounding two others, an Israeli military official said. Hamas’s Al-Qassam Brigades confirmed carrying out a raid on Israeli troops south-east of Khan Younis and engaging Israeli troops at point-blank range. It said one fighter blew himself up among the soldiers, causing casualties, during an attack that lasted several hours. Hamas agreed on Monday to a 60-day ceasefire in return for releasing around half of the hostages it took in its raid on Israel on Oct 7. Israel’s government spokesman hinted that it would reject the proposal, saying it was not interested in “partial deals”. The new plan to invade Gaza City will look to further pile pressure on Hamas to bend towards Israel’s demands, but recruiting so many reservists after nearly two years of war could be difficult. One mental health counsellor for the soldiers told The Telegraph: “These guys are exhausted – they can’t fight any more. They’re broken.” Many of those extending their service are already suffering from PTSD with little time to recover, said the counsellor. Some have been sent to military prisons for refusing to return to the fighting. “We are literally running out of soldiers and the physical and mental toll is enormous,” the counsellor added, saying that at least 16 soldiers had committed suicide this year, unable to deal with the trauma. According to Israeli army radio, the military is preparing for a “prolonged operation of several months that will run into 2026”. However, many in Israel have had enough of the conflict and have increased pressure on the government to end the war and bring home the hostages. Thousands of people carried out a nationwide strike earlier this week, blocking major roads and refusing to work. The call-up came as the country approved a controversial settlement project on Wednesday that would effectively divide the occupied West Bank, a move that Palestinians and human rights groups said could destroy plans for a future Palestinian state. Settlement development in E1, an open tract of land east of Jerusalem, has been under consideration for more than two decades, but was frozen as a result of US pressure during previous administrations. Petitions against the development were rejected on Aug 6. Construction of homes could begin in around a year, with 3,500 apartments planned to expand the settlement of Maale Adumim. Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-Right finance minister, said: “This reality finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state, because there is nothing to recognise and no one to recognise. “Anyone in the world who tries today to recognise a Palestinian state will receive an answer from us on the ground.” His comments followed announcements by Britain, France, Germany, Australia and Canada that they would recognise a Palestinian state. Israel has stepped up air strikes this week despite the mounting pressure that it end the war and alleviate the suffering of the Gaza Strip’s remaining inhabitants. Already at least 62,064 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in the fighting, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, which the United Nations considers reliable. On Tuesday, Israel said it had killed the terrorist who kidnapped former hostage Yarden Bibas, the father of Kfir and Ariel and husband of Shiri, who were killed in Hamas captivity. The IDF said on Tuesday that Jihad Kamal Salem Najjar died in an air strike on Aug 10. The terrorist kidnapped Mr Bibas, who was released in part of a temporary ceasefire deal in February, from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz. “A small part of my closure happened today,” he said in a statement, telling security forces: “Thanks to you, he will be unable to hurt anyone else.” Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. 6. A dolphin that appears to be “targeting women in wetsuits” could be dangerous to humans, experts have warned. The animal, which has been named Reggie, was first spotted joining swimmers in Lyme Bay, Dorset, for an early morning dip on Aug 3 and its presence has attracted crowds of people to the area. But experts say that Reggie, which appears to be living on its own, could snap and turn aggressive amid all the attention, which could also be a danger to its own safety. It has already been photographed with gashes that were seemingly caused by a boat’s propeller. Kayaker Rhys Paterson, 32, said he was forced to intervene after the dolphin began jumping on a woman, pushing her head repeatedly under the water. Footage showed the swimmer saying: “It scared me to death – oh my goodness!” before being pushed under the waves on Aug 14. Kayaker Rhys Paterson filmed the dolphin in Lyme Bay before having to go to the rescue of two swimmers - Rhys Paterson/SWNSMr Paterson, a development director from Lyme Regis, said the filmed incident was not the only confrontation, and the dolphin appeared to be “targeting women in wetsuits”. “We saved two swimmers who were fairly deep, where the dolphin kept jumping on them,” he added. “The dolphin was basically drowning this woman – it kind of jumped on her back four times. “We had been following the dolphin for a little bit, because obviously it’s quite a local legend at the minute. “But when we realised it wasn’t playing, it was quite a big shock. People need to understand that it’s not an amusement arcade. It’s a wild animal. It can snap all of a sudden.” ‘Multiple potential offences’ observedThe Marine Management Organisation, a government quango, said: “We’re increasingly concerned about a lone dolphin spotted in Lyme Bay following multiple potential marine wildlife disturbance offences observed online and shared on social media. “Please remember – never swim with, touch, feed, or approach dolphins. If a dolphin approaches you, calmly leave the area. “Human interaction can cause dolphins to lose their natural wariness, leading to injury or even death. Disturbed dolphins are also known to become aggressive toward people.” However, some holidaymakers are ignoring the warnings, and videos posted online show paddle-boarders floating close to the dolphin. ‘Leave the poor thing alone’One social media user commented: “We went down last night and watched from the shore. We were shocked to see so many paddle-boarders out there (around 20) and they were all following the dolphin and not leaving him alone. “Yes it’s magical for everyone to be up close but seriously have a word with yourselves. Leave the poor thing alone.” Lucy Babey, the director of programmes at Orca, a marine conservation charity, told The Telegraph: “This is a wild animal and a large, robust animal. Interacting with the dolphin could result in serious injuries to both people and the dolphin.” Bottlenose dolphins are native to British shores, can reach up to 13ft in length and typically weigh around 500kg. It is illegal to intentionally or recklessly kill, injure or disturb dolphins, whales and porpoises under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Approaching or recklessly disturbing a dolphin can result in a prison sentence of up to six months and an unlimited fine. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. 11. Two homes on the North Carolina Outer Banks sit precariously in the high waves with their days seemingly numbered. Since 2020, 11 neighboring homes have fallen into the Atlantic Ocean. While the swells from storms like Hurricane Erin make things worse, the conditions threatening the houses are always present — beach erosion and climate change are sending the ocean closer and closer to their front doors. The two houses in the surf in Rodanthe have received plenty of attention as Erin passes several hundred miles (kilometers) to the east. The village of about 200 people sticks out further into the Atlantic than any other part of North Carolina. Jan Richards looked at the houses Tuesday as high tides sent surges of water into the support beams on the two-story homes. She gestured where two other houses used to be before their recent collapse. “The one in the middle fell last year. It fell into that house. So you can see where it crashed into that house. But that has been really resilient and has stayed put up until probably this storm,” Richards said. The ocean has destroyed at least 11 houses since 2020 At least 11 other houses have toppled into the surf in Rodanthe in the past five years, according to the National Park Service, which oversees much of the Outer Banks. Barrier islands like the Outer Banks were never an ideal place for development, according to experts. The islands typically form as waves deposit sediment off the mainland. And they move based on weather patterns and other ocean forces. Some even disappear. Decades ago, houses and other buildings were smaller, less elaborate and easier to move from the encroaching surf, said David Hallac, superintendent of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. “Perhaps it was more well understood in the past that the barrier island was dynamic, that it was moving,” Hallac said. “And if you built something on the beachfront it may not be there forever or it may need to be moved.” The Outer Banks even had to move their famous lighthouse from the sea Even the largest structures aren't immune. Twenty-six years ago the Outer Banks most famous landmark, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse had to be moved over a half-mile (880 meters) inland. When it was built in 1870, the lighthouse was 1,500 feet (457 meters) from the ocean. Fifty years later, the Atlantic was 300 feet (91 meters) away. And erosion keeps coming, Some places along the Outer Banks lose as much as 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) of beachfront a year, Hallac said. “And so every year, 10 to 15 feet of that white sandy beach is gone,” Hallac said. “And then the dunes and then the back-dune area. And then all of a sudden, the foreshore, that area between low water and high water, is right up next to somebody’s backyard. And then the erosion continues.” ‘Like a toothpick in wet sand’ The ocean attacks the houses by the wooden pilings that provide their foundation and keep them above the water. The supports could be 15 feet (4.5 meters) deep. But the surf slowly takes away the sand that is packed around them. “It’s like a toothpick in wet sand or even a beach umbrella,” Hallac said. “The deeper you put it, the more likely it is to stand up straight and resist leaning over. But if you only put it down a few inches, it doesn’t take much wind for that umbrella to start leaning. And it starts to tip over.” A single home collapse can shed debris up to 15 miles (25 kilometers) along the coast, according to a report from a group of federal, state and local officials who are studying threatened oceanfront structures in North Carolina. Collapses can injure beachgoers and lead to potential contamination from septic tanks, among other environmental concerns. The report noted that 750 of nearly 8,800 oceanfront structures in North Carolina are considered at risk from erosion. There are solutions but they are expensive Among the possible solutions is hauling dredged sand to eroding beaches, something that is already being done in other communities on the Outer Banks and East Coast. But it could cost $40 million or more in Rodanthe, posing a major financial challenge for its small tax base Other ideas include buying out threatened properties, moving or demolishing them. But those options are also very expensive. And funding is limited. Braxton Davis, executive director of the North Carolina Coastal Federation, a nonprofit, said the problem isn’t limited to Rodanthe or even to North Carolina. He pointed to erosion issues along California’s coast, the Great Lakes and some of the nation’s rivers. “This is a national issue,” Davis said, adding that sea levels are rising and “the situation is only going to become worse.” View the full article
  12. Aug 20 (Reuters) – Al Qaeda-linked militants killed 21 soldiers during coordinated attacks in Mali on Tuesday, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S.-based non-governmental organization that tracks online reports by Islamist militants. Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) said it captured two soldiers, seized 15 military vehicles and more than 50 weapons during the “widescale” operation. Mali’s army declined to provide a toll on Wednesday but said its outposts in Farabougou and Biriki-Were came under “simultaneous attack” early on Tuesday, according to a military statement. JNIM said they had taken control of a military barracks and militia positions in Farabougou on Tuesday and detonated an improvised explosive device against an army vehicle in the south-central Segou region. The army did not respond to a request for comment on that claim. US, Nato consider security guarantees for Ukraine Segou, a strategic hub in south-central Mali, has seen repeated clashes between jihadist groups, government forces and allied militias amid a years-long insurgency that has spread across the arid Sahel region. JNIM is shifting from rural guerrilla tactics to a campaign aimed at controlling territory around urban centres and asserting political dominance in the Sahel. Mali’s military leaders took power after coups in 2020 and 2021, vowing to restore security in a country where militant groups control large areas of the north and centre and stage frequent attacks on the army and civilians. 14. (NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has signaled the U.S. is prepared to support Ukraine in the air but has completely ruled out a boots-on-the-ground approach. “We can certainly help in the coordination, and perhaps, provide other means of security guarantees to our European allies,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a press briefing Tuesday. “The president understands security guarantees are crucially important to ensure a lasting peace.” Leavitt added that Trump has instructed his national security team to coordinate with Europe and also cooperate with and discuss matters with both Ukraine and Russia. Texas lawmaker who slept in House chamber after rejecting DPS monitor files lawsuit Peace talks between the two nations are ongoing, with anticipation of a multinational force after Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several other European leaders at the White House on Monday following his Friday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The Trump administration is also still working to set up a face-to-face meeting with Zelenskyy and Putin, but there is no set date for when a meeting would happen or where it would take place. Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is also expected to take part in the virtual meeting of European military leaders later this week. Officials tell NewsNation that they will be coordinating strategy and security guarantees. Marco Rubio, who is the secretary of state and the acting national security adviser, will also be taking on the role of leading a new working group that will focus on how the security guarantees for Ukraine will work. (Photo by Spenser Heaps for Utah News Dispatch) The Bureau of Land Management announced a small land transfer on Tuesday, moving several parcels of federal land under state control. The parcels are small tracts of land scattered throughout Antelope Island and Wasatch Mountain state parks. Amounting to roughly 618 acres total, about 329 acres in Antelope Island and 289 acres in Wasatch Mountain, currently owned by the Bureau of Land Management, will be transferred to the Utah Division of State Parks. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX The transfer is made possible by the Utah State Parks Adjustment Act, a 2024 law sponsored by Utah GOP Rep. Celeste Maloy, which targeted several isolated tracks of federal land to be handed over to the state and absorbed by existing state parks. “Having federal lands interspersed throughout these parks has made effective management more challenging,” Maloy said after the bill passed the House last December. Bills sponsored by Reps. Curtis and Maloy get green light in House Bureau of Land Management and state officials said the transfer will improve the visitor experience at Utah state parks. “This land transfer reflects our commitment to efficient land management,” said Michael Gates, the BLM’s West Desert District Manager, on Tuesday. “By consolidating land ownership, we’re creating a better experience for the public.” “Federal and state collaboration ensures our public lands are protected and the public is served,” added Utah State Parks Director Scott Strong in a statement. “Public lands are for everyone, and we invite everyone to make lifelong memories experiencing Utah’s incredible state parks. We will continue to ensure these lands are maintained for the enjoyment and preservation of this and future generations.” SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE View the full article

  24. Jennifer Vasquez Sura, wife of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, speaks at a press conference July 16 before the Fred D. Thompson Federal Courthouse in Nashville. (Photo: John Partipilo/Tennessee Lookout) NASHVILLE — Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia are asking a federal judge in Tennessee to dismiss human smuggling charges against him, calling the case a clear example of “selective and vindictive prosecution” by the Trump administration. In a motion filed late Tuesday, just days ahead of Abrego’s expected pretrial release, the attorneys conceded their argument to dismiss the case is “infrequently made and rarely succeeds.” “But if there has ever been a case for dismissal on those grounds, this is that case,” they wrote. “The government is attempting to use this case — and this Court — to punish Mr. Abrego for successfully fighting his unlawful removal. That is a constitutional violation of the most basic sort.” The government has not yet filed a legal response. “The United States’ position is set forth in Mr. McGuire’s statements in court and our pleadings,” a spokesperson for Acting U.S. Attorney Robert McGuire said in an email Wednesday. The 35-page petition seeking to dismiss all charges narrates a chain of events that began with Abrego’s detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in March, while driving with his son in Maryland, through his deportation days later to a Salvadoran prison. Abrego remained for months in the notorious maximum security CECOT prison, despite the admission by a government attorney he had been sent there in error. Abrego has subsequently claimed he was tortured while in CECOT. ‘A wide-ranging and unprecedented retribution campaign’Attorneys for Abrego challenged his removal to El Salvador for lack of due process in a separate lawsuit filed in federal court in Maryland, where the 29-year-old sheet metal apprentice had been living with his wife and children. “The government did not take steps to fix its mistake,” his Tennessee lawyers wrote Tuesday. “Instead, in response to his lawsuit — and to the substantial publicity it received — the government undertook a wide-ranging and unprecedented retribution campaign against Mr. Abrego.” The human smuggling charges brought against Abrego in Tennessee are part of that campaign, his lawyers argued. Kilmar Abrego Garcia to remain jailed in Tennessee as judge weighs arguments on release A Tennessee grand jury in June returned the indictments for “conspiracy to unlawfully transport illegal aliens for financial gain” and “unlawful transportation of illegal aliens for financial gain.” Prosecutors contend Abrego participated in a national scheme to move immigrants who entered the United States illegally to points around the country. Abrego, as his attorneys refer to him in legal filings, has pleaded not guilty. The charges are tied to a 2022 traffic stop in Putnam County, Tenn., where Abrego was pulled over for speeding with nine passengers in the back of his car. Abrego was neither ticketed nor arrested in the stop. A Department of Homeland Security special agent later testified he was not tasked with investigating the Tennessee traffic stop until April 28 of this year. By then, a Maryland federal judge had ordered the government to facilitate Abrego’s return to the U.S.nited States and the Supreme Court had upheld the decision. The government returned Abrego to Tennessee to face charges on June 6. Case draws national scrutinyThe case generated widespread public scrutiny of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown tactics during his initial months in office, which were criticized for undermining due process rights guaranteed to both citizens and noncitizens. Abrego, a Salvadoran national who entered the United States illegally as a teenager, is subject to a 2019 immigration court order that prohibits the government from deporting him to El Salvador, where he says he faces threats of gang violence. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, wrongly deported to El Salvador prison, to face federal charges in Nashville After his wrongful deportation, administration officials, including President Donald Trump, singled out Abrego in their public comments, calling him a “gangbanger,” “monster,” “illegal predator,” “illegal alien terrorist,” “wife beater,” and “human trafficker.” Abrego’s attorneys accused the administration of a public smear campaign intended to paper over its embarrassment over his wrongful deportation and retaliate against his legal efforts to assert his due process rights. Abrego has denied gang affiliation. The administration’s public statements, Abrego’s attorneys argued, bolster their claims that the prosecution against him is retaliatory. “The unprecedented public pronouncements attacking Mr. Abrego for his successful exercise of constitutional rights by senior cabinet members, leaders of the DOJ, and even the President of the United States, make this the rare case where actual vindictiveness is clear from the record,” they wrote. Lawyers seek to curb Trump administration comments about the caseEarlier this month, Abrego’s attorneys sought, for a second time, a court order restricting government officials’ remarks about the case as prejudicial and contrary to standard court rules. In response, U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw, who presides over the Tennessee criminal case, directed all “counsel and those working with counsel” to note in their public communications that Abrego is presumed innocent. “Our Constitution requires that Abrego is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury,” Crenshaw wrote in his July 31 order. Separately, in response to Abrego’s attorney’s waiver of the right to a speedy trial, the court set a trial date of Jan. 27. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem speaking at a July press conference at the Homeland Security facility in Nashville, called Kilmar Abrego Garcia a “monster” and said she hopes a federal judge in the case “will do the right thing” in convicting him. (Photo: John Partipilo/Tennessee Lookout)Abrego remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshalls, who have jurisdiction over pre-trial detainees in federal cases. Abrego has already been cleared for release pending trial by a Tennessee magistrate, an order placed on hold at the request of his attorneys amid uncertainty over whether federal immigration officials intend to detain or deport him to a “third country.” Abrego’s attorneys on Tuesday requested the magistrate move forward with releasing him Friday, the day the hold expires. The attorneys noted a Maryland federal judge has barred the government from taking Abrego into immigration custody and required immigration officials to provide 72-hours written notice before removing him to a third country. His Tennessee lawyers, Sean Hecker and Rascoe Dean, also wrote they are “retaining a private security firm that has experience providing court-approved pre-trial transportation and security services in criminal cases to transport Mr. Abrego from Tennessee to Maryland upon release.” The lawyers requested details about the security arrangements be kept under seal “in order to protect Mr. Abrego’s safety.” A federal magistrate on Wednesday set a tentative hearing for Friday if prosecutors oppose any of the conditions of Abrego’s release sought by his attorneys.
